The following program presents principles 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 designed to promote good health 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.07 and is not intended to take 00:00:04.10\00:00:05.43 the place of personalized professional care. 00:00:05.47\00:00:07.57 The opinions and ideas expressed 00:00:07.60\00:00:09.17 are those of the speaker. 00:00:09.20\00:00:10.61 Viewers are encouraged to draw their own conclusions 00:00:10.64\00:00:13.14 about the information presented. 00:00:13.17\00:00:15.28 You probably already know this, but here's a good reminder, 00:00:15.31\00:00:18.05 over 70% of the earth surface is covered with water 00:00:18.08\00:00:21.92 and roughly 50% to 60% of our bodies 00:00:21.95\00:00:24.59 are made up of water. 00:00:24.62\00:00:25.95 It seems like such a widely significant part of our lives, 00:00:25.99\00:00:30.03 but how much significance do we give it 00:00:30.06\00:00:32.23 when choosing what to pour into our cups. 00:00:32.26\00:00:34.83 Stay with us on today's program 00:00:34.86\00:00:36.20 and learn just how much 00:00:36.23\00:00:37.57 you can actually benefit from drinking water every day. 00:00:37.60\00:00:40.34 Thanks for joining us here today 00:01:00.96\00:01:02.29 on the Ultimate Prescription, 00:01:02.32\00:01:03.76 a program dedicated to helping us better understand 00:01:03.79\00:01:06.46 God's design for our lives and experience better health 00:01:06.49\00:01:09.10 by following His plan. 00:01:09.13\00:01:10.87 I'm your host Nick Evenson 00:01:10.90\00:01:12.23 and I'm joined by Dr. James Marcum. 00:01:12.27\00:01:13.80 And on today program, 00:01:13.84\00:01:15.17 we're gonna be talking about the importance of water 00:01:15.20\00:01:17.51 and how it can benefit every cell in our body. 00:01:17.54\00:01:19.87 Is that right, Dr. Marcum? 00:01:19.91\00:01:21.24 Yes, we are, Nick. 00:01:21.28\00:01:22.61 And the reason we choose some of these topics 00:01:22.64\00:01:24.41 is because a lot of people don't realize 00:01:24.45\00:01:26.68 the importance of it. 00:01:26.72\00:01:28.05 You know, we talked about things like movement, 00:01:28.08\00:01:30.92 we've talked about nutrition. 00:01:30.95\00:01:33.12 And one of these things we talked about is water 00:01:33.15\00:01:35.29 'cause if we don't get enough water in our body, 00:01:35.32\00:01:37.83 it puts stress on us, accelerates aging, 00:01:37.86\00:01:41.10 and it has a lot of bad things. 00:01:41.13\00:01:42.80 The cells are predominately made of water 00:01:42.83\00:01:45.37 and if we don't get enough water, 00:01:45.40\00:01:46.94 bad things can happen rather quickly. 00:01:46.97\00:01:48.97 Yeah. 00:01:49.00\00:01:50.34 Now you are a practicing cardiologist. 00:01:50.37\00:01:51.71 Yes. You're not a TV doctor. 00:01:51.74\00:01:53.07 No, no. 00:01:53.11\00:01:54.44 So in cardiology, water, 00:01:54.48\00:01:55.88 I'm sure, it's very important to our bloodstreams, 00:01:55.91\00:01:57.78 you probably talk about this with patients quite regularly. 00:01:57.81\00:01:59.61 Well, I do 'cause it regulates the entire body. 00:01:59.65\00:02:02.22 You know, now if someone has a weak heart, 00:02:02.25\00:02:04.39 they have to be careful 00:02:04.42\00:02:05.75 with how much water they bring in, 00:02:05.79\00:02:07.36 but water helps then the blood, 00:02:07.39\00:02:09.32 water helps every cell of the body do better. 00:02:09.36\00:02:12.09 When we prescribe a medication, okay? 00:02:12.13\00:02:14.40 For instance, the medications many of them 00:02:14.43\00:02:16.87 are metabolized in the kidney. 00:02:16.90\00:02:19.37 If the kidney doesn't get enough water, 00:02:19.40\00:02:21.27 it doesn't work as well. 00:02:21.30\00:02:22.97 So 1 milligram dose doesn't get execrated 00:02:23.00\00:02:25.47 become a 2 milligram dose. 00:02:25.51\00:02:27.48 So kidney function is tied to water consumption, 00:02:27.51\00:02:30.71 brain function, you know, ties in with water. 00:02:30.75\00:02:34.58 Even something as common as fatigue 00:02:34.62\00:02:36.89 can come in with water. 00:02:36.92\00:02:38.39 If you're walking in a desert, don't get any water, 00:02:38.42\00:02:41.26 you can be chronically fatigued. 00:02:41.29\00:02:42.99 Right. 00:02:43.02\00:02:44.36 So a lot of people don't realize 00:02:44.39\00:02:45.73 how fast dehydration can cause a problem. 00:02:45.76\00:02:49.03 Yeah. 00:02:49.06\00:02:50.40 Now Heartwise Ministries is the name of our non-profit 00:02:50.43\00:02:53.03 that we do the health education through. 00:02:53.07\00:02:55.07 And if you would like to visit our website, 00:02:55.10\00:02:56.44 HeartWiseMinistries.org is the site you can visit. 00:02:56.47\00:02:59.54 There's a lot of resources there 00:02:59.57\00:03:00.94 that we try and make available to folks. 00:03:00.98\00:03:02.64 There is a prayer form 00:03:02.68\00:03:04.01 where you can list your prayer request, 00:03:04.05\00:03:05.38 there's a newsletter you can sign up 00:03:05.41\00:03:06.75 and receive a monthly message of hope and encouragement 00:03:06.78\00:03:09.62 from Dr. Marcum regarding your health, 00:03:09.65\00:03:11.49 and there's a lot of programming there as well 00:03:11.52\00:03:13.89 that you can watch and read and share with your friends, 00:03:13.92\00:03:16.69 and share on social media and that kind of thing. 00:03:16.73\00:03:18.69 So visit the website and there is also place 00:03:18.73\00:03:21.00 where you can ask a health question. 00:03:21.03\00:03:22.36 And one of Dr. Marcum's team or Dr. Marcum himself 00:03:22.40\00:03:25.50 will kind of give you some advice 00:03:25.53\00:03:27.20 to point you in the right direction. 00:03:27.24\00:03:28.57 And we've received a question here 00:03:28.60\00:03:29.94 talking about something 00:03:29.97\00:03:31.31 that you just mentioned actually, Dr. Marcum. 00:03:31.34\00:03:32.97 The person says, "I've been so tired recently, 00:03:33.01\00:03:35.38 is there some specific testing I should undergo 00:03:35.41\00:03:37.85 considering my state of fatigue?" 00:03:37.88\00:03:39.55 Yeah. 00:03:39.58\00:03:40.92 Well, being tired is, lot of people have it, okay? 00:03:40.95\00:03:43.79 And one of the things that can cause fatigue 00:03:43.82\00:03:46.05 is just not drinking enough water. 00:03:46.09\00:03:47.79 Yeah. 00:03:47.82\00:03:49.16 You know, it's estimated that 00:03:49.19\00:03:50.53 that's the number one cause of day time fatigue, 00:03:50.56\00:03:52.96 is just being dehydrated. 00:03:52.99\00:03:54.56 So simple. Yeah. 00:03:54.60\00:03:55.93 We drink a lot of other things, you know, 00:03:55.96\00:03:58.00 water should be added to that list 00:03:58.03\00:03:59.83 as the high priority. 00:03:59.87\00:04:02.34 Other things that can cause fatigue 00:04:02.37\00:04:04.11 is not getting enough rest at night, 00:04:04.14\00:04:06.61 medical conditions like sleep apnea, 00:04:06.64\00:04:09.24 diabetes, certain medications, an underactive thyroid, anemia, 00:04:09.28\00:04:15.18 you know, all sorts of chronic medical conditions 00:04:15.22\00:04:17.55 can cause fatigue like malignancy. 00:04:17.59\00:04:19.59 So there's many different causes of fatigue, 00:04:19.62\00:04:22.06 you need to see your doctor. 00:04:22.09\00:04:23.79 But, you know, 00:04:23.83\00:04:25.16 if you wanna do something simple, 00:04:25.19\00:04:26.53 try drinking a little more water, 00:04:26.56\00:04:27.90 see if it gets better. 00:04:27.93\00:04:29.26 So that's a very important thing to think about 00:04:29.30\00:04:31.07 as we get tired. 00:04:31.10\00:04:32.43 All of us do get tired from time to time. 00:04:32.47\00:04:33.94 Yeah. 00:04:33.97\00:04:35.30 Now you've written recently a seven-week Bible study 00:04:35.34\00:04:37.71 called Biblical Prescriptions for Life. 00:04:37.74\00:04:39.81 And there's a lot of great resources there 00:04:39.84\00:04:42.34 to help point us back to biblical truths 00:04:42.38\00:04:44.45 and help us live in line with the way God designed us. 00:04:44.48\00:04:47.25 But we've got a story there from that study 00:04:47.28\00:04:49.88 that we wanna share, 00:04:49.92\00:04:51.25 a video about someone who didn't drink enough water 00:04:51.29\00:04:53.22 or plan their workout quite accordingly. 00:04:53.25\00:04:55.69 Let's have a look. 00:04:55.72\00:04:58.53 Mark was an excellent athlete, 00:04:58.56\00:05:01.50 and he prided himself for staying healthy, 00:05:01.53\00:05:04.23 he particularly enjoyed 00:05:04.27\00:05:05.60 riding his bicycle long distances. 00:05:05.63\00:05:08.17 Now one Sunday, 00:05:08.20\00:05:09.70 in the heat and humidity of an August summer day, 00:05:09.74\00:05:13.04 he set out on an 80-mile bike ride by himself. 00:05:13.07\00:05:16.24 He usually didn't do this, but he really wanted to ride, 00:05:16.28\00:05:19.11 so he left his home at about 8:00 in the morning 00:05:19.15\00:05:21.45 and an hour to the journey, he realized 00:05:21.48\00:05:24.12 he left his water bottles at home. 00:05:24.15\00:05:27.06 Well, he decided to venture on anyway 00:05:27.09\00:05:29.39 and as he felt pretty strong that morning, 00:05:29.42\00:05:32.16 but about an hour later 00:05:32.19\00:05:33.53 he had an unforeseen problem with the chain on his bike. 00:05:33.56\00:05:37.13 And it took him about an hour 00:05:37.17\00:05:38.97 to repair the chain, 00:05:39.00\00:05:40.34 and then he started moving forward again. 00:05:40.37\00:05:42.54 By now it was starting to get hot 00:05:42.57\00:05:44.61 and Mark was thirsty. 00:05:44.64\00:05:46.01 Unfortunately, there is no close houses 00:05:46.04\00:05:48.54 or easy water access. 00:05:48.58\00:05:50.55 Well, he decided to ride onward. 00:05:50.58\00:05:53.31 Now by 11 am that Sunday morning, 00:05:53.35\00:05:55.68 the temperature was in the 90s 00:05:55.72\00:05:58.29 and his metabolism was increasing, 00:05:58.32\00:06:00.76 the temperature of his entire body 00:06:00.79\00:06:02.12 was going up. 00:06:02.16\00:06:03.49 We call this hypothermia. 00:06:03.53\00:06:05.46 He kept riding but eventually he had to stop 00:06:05.49\00:06:07.90 because he was sick. 00:06:07.93\00:06:09.26 Mark got weak, he was vomiting, 00:06:09.30\00:06:11.93 he was having a hard time forming coherent thoughts, 00:06:11.97\00:06:15.14 he wasn't in good shape at all. 00:06:15.17\00:06:17.34 Eventually, a car came by and stopped to help Mark 00:06:17.37\00:06:20.71 who was crumpled on the ground. 00:06:20.74\00:06:23.11 Well, this good Samaritan wisely called an ambulance, 00:06:23.14\00:06:26.72 and Mark was immediately rushed towards the hospital. 00:06:26.75\00:06:29.95 There a group of doctors, nurses, and others, 00:06:29.98\00:06:32.49 including myself, began to care for Mark. 00:06:32.52\00:06:36.09 By that time 00:06:36.12\00:06:37.46 he was experiencing multi-organ failure. 00:06:37.49\00:06:40.10 When he got to the hospital 00:06:40.13\00:06:41.46 his temperature was 105 degrees, 00:06:41.50\00:06:43.83 his blood pressure was 68/40, 00:06:43.87\00:06:46.60 and his heart rate was 160 beats a minute. 00:06:46.63\00:06:49.57 He was breathing 30 to 35 beats a minute 00:06:49.60\00:06:51.94 and he couldn't even think clearly. 00:06:51.97\00:06:54.24 Unfortunately, 00:06:54.28\00:06:55.61 Mark was carrying no medical information, 00:06:55.64\00:06:57.28 he didn't even have a contact number on his person. 00:06:57.31\00:07:00.35 And the paramedic was looking through his bike 00:07:00.38\00:07:02.62 and eventually found a driver's license 00:07:02.65\00:07:04.55 tucked away in one of the bags on his bike. 00:07:04.59\00:07:07.12 Mark was not doing well, 00:07:07.16\00:07:09.99 he needed every cell in his body 00:07:10.03\00:07:12.39 to improve quickly, or he was gonna pass on. 00:07:12.43\00:07:15.63 Initial testing revealed Mark was in renal failure 00:07:15.66\00:07:18.57 with a condition called rhabdomyolysis. 00:07:18.60\00:07:21.44 Now this is a fancy word 00:07:21.47\00:07:22.80 that means the muscles just breaking down 00:07:22.84\00:07:25.11 and this caused a condition called metabolic acidosis. 00:07:25.14\00:07:29.68 Fluids were given, cooling blankets, ice, 00:07:29.71\00:07:32.75 and support for every system was begun. 00:07:32.78\00:07:35.35 Well, Mark was out of it, 00:07:35.38\00:07:36.72 didn't understand what was happening, 00:07:36.75\00:07:38.19 he was delirious, 00:07:38.22\00:07:39.82 his brain was having the effects 00:07:39.85\00:07:42.12 of the dehydration as well. 00:07:42.16\00:07:44.33 Because of the renal failure, dialysis was begun, 00:07:44.36\00:07:47.56 and Mark was sick for two weeks in the hospital. 00:07:47.60\00:07:50.73 But thank God, Mark recovered. 00:07:50.77\00:07:52.90 Before he left the hospital, 00:07:52.93\00:07:54.37 I reminded him that water is fundamental 00:07:54.40\00:07:57.14 and necessary to life 00:07:57.17\00:07:58.51 and every cell in our body needs water. 00:07:58.54\00:08:01.24 Now Mark takes water with him everywhere he goes. 00:08:01.28\00:08:05.95 You know, drinking water seems like 00:08:05.98\00:08:07.62 such a natural thing that you would think to do 00:08:07.65\00:08:09.95 and like it seems kind of absurd 00:08:09.98\00:08:11.85 that someone would have such a serious condition 00:08:11.89\00:08:13.86 just from not drinking water. 00:08:13.89\00:08:15.26 Yeah, that's a very dramatic story. 00:08:15.29\00:08:18.09 But as I remember what happened that day to Mark, 00:08:18.13\00:08:22.20 I remember, you know, without water 00:08:22.23\00:08:24.40 things happen very quickly. 00:08:24.43\00:08:26.57 And it's been estimated that up to 70% of people 00:08:26.60\00:08:31.07 don't get enough water every day. 00:08:31.11\00:08:33.44 And let's say, you know, Mark was the far extreme, 00:08:33.48\00:08:35.91 you know? 00:08:35.94\00:08:37.28 So he didn't have any water, 00:08:37.31\00:08:38.65 everything started to malfunction. 00:08:38.68\00:08:40.02 Remember, water, the universal solvent, 00:08:40.05\00:08:42.05 all of our cells depend on water, 00:08:42.08\00:08:44.09 that they need water, it's important, you know? 00:08:44.12\00:08:48.06 But some of us, 00:08:48.09\00:08:49.42 you know, might get half of what we need 00:08:49.46\00:08:51.36 or 70% but we don't get all. 00:08:51.39\00:08:53.23 And when we don't get the water we need, 00:08:53.26\00:08:54.76 it puts some type of stressor on our bodies. 00:08:54.80\00:08:57.77 Again, we talked about how stress ages the body, 00:08:57.80\00:09:00.97 it changes the metabolism, 00:09:01.00\00:09:02.47 it changes every cell in the body. 00:09:02.50\00:09:04.37 So something as simple as water 00:09:04.41\00:09:07.74 can make some dramatic impacts. 00:09:07.78\00:09:10.01 Now let me just go through 00:09:10.05\00:09:11.38 some of the organ systems, Nick? 00:09:11.41\00:09:12.75 Yeah. 00:09:12.78\00:09:14.12 You know, water is important for digestion,
