Is it causing pain?" 00:03:18.49\00:03:20.46 And if the answer is no, 00:03:20.50\00:03:21.83 then chances are you're in pretty good shape. 00:03:21.86\00:03:24.93 So today we got a very important topic. 00:03:24.97\00:03:27.84 Yeah, before we get to the discussion about light. 00:03:27.87\00:03:30.47 Light in the Bible is also referred to as truth, right? 00:03:30.51\00:03:33.88 So we want to point people back to the Bible 00:03:33.91\00:03:36.51 and through the website HeartWiseMinistries.org, 00:03:36.54\00:03:39.71 that is a site that you've helped construct 00:03:39.75\00:03:43.42 to point people back to biblical principles 00:03:43.45\00:03:44.85 and I kind of think of it. 00:03:44.89\00:03:46.22 Yeah, and we don't want this program 00:03:46.25\00:03:47.72 just to be a one and done. 00:03:47.76\00:03:49.66 We want to develop a relationship with people 00:03:49.69\00:03:51.86 that they can grow, that we can grow, 00:03:51.89\00:03:54.06 we can have friendships and they can go to the website 00:03:54.10\00:03:57.07 and have their prayers answered, 00:03:57.10\00:03:59.20 they can go and contribute to the website, 00:03:59.23\00:04:01.47 they can have their medical questions answered, 00:04:01.50\00:04:04.04 you know, we don't enter into a relationships 00:04:04.07\00:04:05.57 so that we can point people into certain directions. 00:04:05.61\00:04:08.78 We want to continue this relationship. 00:04:08.81\00:04:10.58 We also have a monthly newsletter. 00:04:10.61\00:04:12.11 That's right. 00:04:12.15\00:04:13.48 And you can find all of these resources 00:04:13.52\00:04:15.55 at HeartWiseMinistries.org. 00:04:15.58\00:04:18.12 You can request prayer, submit your health questions, 00:04:18.15\00:04:21.22 join our monthly newsletter, 00:04:21.26\00:04:22.59 where Dr. Marcum writes a monthly message 00:04:22.62\00:04:24.43 of encouragement and hope, 00:04:24.46\00:04:25.96 and we just encourage you to join our newsletter 00:04:25.99\00:04:28.36 and visit the website. 00:04:28.40\00:04:29.73 And we actually have a question 00:04:29.76\00:04:31.10 that we're gonna start this program off 00:04:31.13\00:04:32.47 that came from a viewer and they write in, 00:04:32.50\00:04:34.60 "Dr. Marcum, recently my doctor prescribed 00:04:34.64\00:04:37.97 a medication for depression. 00:04:38.01\00:04:39.77 Are there any other options?" 00:04:39.81\00:04:41.48 Yeah. 00:04:41.51\00:04:42.84 Well, that is a great question, 00:04:42.88\00:04:44.21 and one of the things that this program 00:04:44.25\00:04:46.21 has tried to do through time is meet people's needs. 00:04:46.25\00:04:50.49 And a lot of people have specific questions 00:04:50.52\00:04:53.05 regarding specific things. 00:04:53.09\00:04:55.06 And remember, there's not a black and white 00:04:55.09\00:04:57.23 for every situation, 00:04:57.26\00:04:58.59 so every situation is different. 00:04:58.63\00:05:00.60 So this person is wondering to know 00:05:00.63\00:05:02.76 whether they need a medicine for a specific condition. 00:05:02.80\00:05:06.20 And that's a question I get quite a bit, okay. 00:05:06.23\00:05:09.77 And I'm gonna answer this generically, okay. 00:05:09.80\00:05:14.08 If you have a situation that you can make the chemistry 00:05:14.11\00:05:18.31 of the body change so you don't have depression, 00:05:18.35\00:05:20.92 the answer would be, maybe not. 00:05:20.95\00:05:23.05 And, lot of depression is due to a lack of a chemical 00:05:23.08\00:05:26.59 called serotonin in the body. 00:05:26.62\00:05:29.26 And if you can increase the serotonin levels, 00:05:29.29\00:05:32.13 maybe you don't need to do that. 00:05:32.16\00:05:34.23 And we can increase the serotonin levels 00:05:34.26\00:05:36.46 many different ways, one of them is being outside. 00:05:36.50\00:05:39.50 You know, through the years 00:05:39.53\00:05:41.20 we don't get out as much as we used to. 00:05:41.24\00:05:43.47 In fact it's estimated, 00:05:43.51\00:05:44.91 I know that your dad lives way up high. 00:05:44.94\00:05:46.68 Where does he live, Nick? 00:05:46.71\00:05:48.04 He's up in Fairbanks, Alaska. 00:05:48.08\00:05:49.41 Yeah, did you know that the higher we get north, 00:05:49.44\00:05:51.55 the less sunlight we get? 00:05:51.58\00:05:53.58 Sunlight's important for the production 00:05:53.62\00:05:55.85 of the body to make serotonin. 00:05:55.88\00:05:58.72 So that's very important 00:05:58.75\00:06:00.09 so, people that live north, they don't get outside, 00:06:00.12\00:06:02.16 they have the highest rates of depression 00:06:02.19\00:06:04.16 and actually suicide than people that live down 00:06:04.19\00:06:07.06 in the beach area. 00:06:07.10\00:06:08.43 Have you ever seen anyone 00:06:08.46\00:06:09.80 that's depressed going to the beach? 00:06:09.83\00:06:11.63 Nope, not. Pretty happy faces. 00:06:11.67\00:06:13.00 I mean, you start... 00:06:13.03\00:06:14.37 When you get out in the sunlight, 00:06:14.40\00:06:15.74 you know, all of the sudden these levels go up, 00:06:15.77\00:06:17.67 you feel really, really great and powerful. 00:06:17.71\00:06:20.48 So serotonin's good, 00:06:20.51\00:06:21.84 also we're now learning that the bowel, 00:06:21.88\00:06:24.15 you know, the food we eat 00:06:24.18\00:06:25.55 affects the expression of all these precursors 00:06:25.58\00:06:28.48 which turns into these brain chemicals 00:06:28.52\00:06:30.22 that our body needs. 00:06:30.25\00:06:31.69 You know, some people just get depressed 00:06:31.72\00:06:33.66 because of the situations in life 00:06:33.69\00:06:35.76 and that's sometimes cognitive therapy can help. 00:06:35.79\00:06:38.06 Worship can help those things. 00:06:38.09\00:06:40.00 So the answer to that question is yes, 00:06:40.03\00:06:42.83 a lot of times if you're working 00:06:42.86\00:06:44.20 with your physician, 00:06:44.23\00:06:45.57 he can get you off of these medicines 00:06:45.60\00:06:47.10 if he can treat the other way 00:06:47.14\00:06:48.84 in a holistic way, that they can do that. 00:06:48.87\00:06:51.37 Now, some people have genetic defects, Nick, 00:06:51.41\00:06:53.81 that they have genetics and no matter what they do, 00:06:53.84\00:06:56.04 they can't change what we call the core genetics. 00:06:56.08\00:06:59.15 You know, they don't make it, 00:06:59.18\00:07:00.62 okay, no matter what they do, they can't make it. 00:07:00.65\00:07:02.58 The genes aren't there. 00:07:02.62\00:07:03.95 So no matter what they do to the epigenetics, 00:07:03.99\00:07:05.99 the lifestyle, they can't change that. 00:07:06.02\00:07:08.32 So there's a small number of people 00:07:08.36\00:07:10.26 that might benefit from taking these medications. 00:07:10.29\00:07:13.76 But it's very interesting and as I see, 00:07:13.80\00:07:17.27 unfortunately sometimes the quick thing is that, 00:07:17.30\00:07:19.63 you know, oh, let me have a quick fix, 00:07:19.67\00:07:21.90 you know, here take a pill, let me give you a bill. 00:07:21.94\00:07:24.47 And unfortunately sometimes we don't spend enough time 00:07:24.51\00:07:27.61 understanding the reason why. 00:07:27.64\00:07:29.58 I'm helping people get at these causes, 00:07:29.61\00:07:31.65 but I've seen in my practice many instances 00:07:31.68\00:07:34.18 where people have been proved 00:07:34.22\00:07:35.65 by doing these lifestyle changes 00:07:35.68\00:07:37.45 before we get put on pills for "genetic problem." 00:07:37.49\00:07:41.42 Yeah. 00:07:41.46\00:07:42.79 But, you know, in the Biblical Prescription's 00:07:42.82\00:07:44.23 study videos, 00:07:44.26\00:07:45.59 we have actually a patient case study 00:07:45.63\00:07:48.86 and we've prepared a video. 00:07:48.90\00:07:50.23 Let's take a look at that and hear the story about Sarah. 00:07:50.27\00:07:54.20 Sarah was in the dark. 00:07:54.24\00:07:56.91 She was also three weeks 00:07:56.94\00:07:59.24 after the birth of her fourth child. 00:07:59.27\00:08:02.01 I was seeing her because she had a history 00:08:02.04\00:08:03.88 of an abnormal heart rhythm that we had successfully, 00:08:03.91\00:08:07.12 surgically ablated. 00:08:07.15\00:08:09.02 Her heart was doing just fine. 00:08:09.05\00:08:11.59 But I could tell something was wrong. 00:08:11.62\00:08:13.79 She was not herself. 00:08:13.82\00:08:15.72 The fourth child was quite a surprise 00:08:15.76\00:08:17.83 for the now 40-year-old. 00:08:17.86\00:08:20.00 After talking to Sarah, I realized she was depressed. 00:08:20.03\00:08:23.40 All the symptoms were there. 00:08:23.43\00:08:24.80 Not sleeping, no energy, not happy, not eating, 00:08:24.83\00:08:29.17 no interest and very pessimistic. 00:08:29.20\00:08:32.14 She was living in darkness. 00:08:32.17\00:08:35.14 This was not the Sarah I knew. 00:08:35.18\00:08:37.45 She'd seen her family doctor who wanted to try 00:08:37.48\00:08:39.88 a popular antidepressant. 00:08:39.91\00:08:42.35 I reviewed depression with her 00:08:42.38\00:08:43.79 and how it changes the entire body, 00:08:43.82\00:08:45.89 and I also talked about the antidepressant, 00:08:45.92\00:08:47.72 how it changes her too and she decided not to do that. 00:08:47.76\00:08:51.33 I asked her if she was going outside. 00:08:51.36\00:08:53.40 She was not. 00:08:53.43\00:08:54.90 I explained to her how the sun was needed 00:08:54.93\00:08:56.97 for Vitamin D, 00:08:57.00\00:08:58.33 a prohormone to help all the chemical reactions 00:08:58.37\00:09:01.14 throughout the body. 00:09:01.17\00:09:02.50 This includes bone health, our immune system, 00:09:02.54\00:09:05.37 cardiovascular health, and brain health, 00:09:05.41\00:09:08.04 which affects depression. 00:09:08.08\00:09:09.88 Basically we need Vitamin D for every cell. 00:09:09.91\00:09:12.65 This prohormone helps our body make serotonin, 00:09:12.68\00:09:15.68 a much needed neurotransmitter. 00:09:15.72\00:09:18.32 We measured Sarah's Vitamin D levels 00:09:18.35\00:09:20.22 and they were woefully low. 00:09:20.26\00:09:21.92 We simply gave her some supplements, 00:09:21.96\00:09:24.06 had her go outside for 30 minutes 00:09:24.09\00:09:25.89 three times a week while walking and guess what? 00:09:25.93\00:09:29.06 In a few weeks she was back to the Sarah we all knew. 00:09:29.10\00:09:32.30 She was literally walking in the light. 00:09:32.33\00:09:36.20 She learned a new truth 00:09:36.24\00:09:38.04 and how to apply that truth to her life. 00:09:38.07\00:09:41.04 Instead of reaching for a prescription pad, 00:09:41.08\00:09:43.78 I reached for a biblical prescription for life. 00:09:43.81\00:09:47.88 Sarah was spared of medication 00:09:47.92\00:09:49.65 that would just treat the depression 00:09:49.68\00:09:51.42 without addressing the underlying cause. 00:09:51.45\00:09:55.16 What's even more alarming is the medical community 00:09:55.19\00:09:58.36 is continually uncovering side-effects of medications. 00:09:58.39\00:10:03.26 Well, it's simple. 00:10:03.30\00:10:04.97 Our Creator designed us to be outside, 00:10:05.00\00:10:08.64 outside in the light. 00:10:08.67\00:10:10.77 Sun is needed for our body to function at its best. 00:10:10.81\00:10:14.71 This is part of the original design, 00:10:14.74\00:10:17.05 without the sun stress on the body occurs. 00:10:17.08\00:10:20.05 In Sarah's case, lack of Vitamin D 00:10:20.08\00:10:21.98 was decreasing serotonin which triggered depression. 00:10:22.02\00:10:26.22 Sarah learned that light changed the chemistry, 00:10:26.25\00:10:28.92 the physical being of her body. 00:10:28.96\00:10:31.23 She also learned that light, 00:10:31.26\00:10:33.46 truth is also important for the body as well. 00:10:33.50\00:10:38.47 That's just a great story about another biblical prescription 00:10:38.50\00:10:41.34 being applied that had a massive impact 00:10:41.37\00:10:43.30 on someone's life. raising... 00:10:54.25\00:10:57.49 You know, she had a child late in life, 00:10:57.52\00:10:59.59 so there's some challenges 00:10:59.62\00:11:00.96 that was a little bit of a surprise 00:11:00.99\00:11:02.49 but when she got over that surprise, 00:11:02.52\00:11:04.49 got out into the sunshine, her depression is better now, 00:11:04.53\00:11:07.06 but now she realizes that all these things of life, 00:11:07.10\00:11:10.27 you know, staying indoors too much is a stressor, 00:11:10.30\00:11:14.20 and if you have genes that are predisposed 00:11:14.24\00:11:16.14 to having problems, it can activate problems. 00:11:16.17\00:11:19.01 So she learned how important sunlight. 00:11:19.04\00:11:21.01 Now some people can't get into sunlight 00:11:21.04\00:11:23.35 and they benefit by taking Vitamin D, 00:11:23.38\00:11:25.71 D3 specifically. 00:11:25.75\00:11:27.58 In the winter time, 00:11:27.62\00:11:28.95 I actually take 2000 international units 00:11:28.98\00:11:30.95 of D3 every day. 00:11:30.99\00:11:32.72 So I have to take it 'cause I don't get outside, 00:11:32.75\00:11:34.86 I spend a lot of time indoors as well, 00:11:34.89\00:11:36.76 and my Vitamin D level goes low and serotonin, 00:11:36.79\00:11:39.26 so light is very important. 00:11:39.29\00:11:41.23 Not only the things we do know 00:11:41.26\00:11:42.83 but the things that we don't know. 00:11:42.86\00:11:44.20 Yeah. 00:11:44.23\00:11:45.57 Now, we're continually expanding our knowledge about 00:11:45.60\00:11:48.70 all different areas of health. 00:11:48.74\00:11:50.81 Tell us real quick, what do we know about 00:11:50.84\00:11:52.87 and what do we not know about light? 00:11:52.91\00:11:54.78 Well, we don't know a lot about light 00:11:54.81\00:11:57.08 but think about it is that light, 00:11:57.11\00:11:59.25 sunlight is a source of energy. 00:11:59.28\00:12:01.72 Not only for us but for our whole planet, 00:12:01.75\00:12:04.02 you know, the sun, the plants, photosynthesis, 00:12:04.05\00:12:08.19 the food we eat, 00:12:08.22\00:12:09.56 the energy to make us go comes from the sun. 00:12:09.59\00:12:12.73 That's the energy that sort of drives things. 00:12:12.76\00:12:15.66 Also darkness is not good, okay. 00:12:15.70\00:12:18.27 Darkness is the absence of light. 00:12:18.30\00:12:20.60 We can think of the spiritual things as, 00:12:20.64\00:12:22.30 is light is the truth 00:12:22.34\00:12:24.07 and the absence of truth is darkness, 00:12:24.11\00:12:25.71 but we want to live in light. 00:12:25.74\00:12:27.14 Absolutely. 00:12:27.18\00:12:28.51 Within light so we can see the spiritual 00:12:28.54\00:12:29.88 and the physical coming together. 00:12:29.91\00:12:31.61 Well, God created the sun for a reason. 00:12:31.65\00:12:33.85 We have plants for a reason, 00:12:33.88\00:12:35.52 and when we don't get out in the sunlight, 00:12:35.55\00:12:37.49 when we don't see this, things happen to us 00:12:37.52\00:12:40.36 whether we understand them or not. 00:12:40.39\00:12:43.02 Sun's a source of energy for our lives. 00:12:43.06\00:12:45.36 So what we found out that now we're learning 00:12:45.39\00:12:47.93 that the sun not only does Vitamin D, 00:12:47.96\00:12:50.13 but it also can penetrate some of our deep organs. 00:12:50.17\00:12:52.70 Right. 00:12:52.73\00:12:54.07 And the sunlight can go not only the skin, 00:12:54.10\00:12:55.80 but it can go deeper into us 00:12:55.84\00:12:57.47 and there's different types of sunlight 00:12:57.51\00:12:59.47 and, yeah, we think, we hear all the bad things 00:12:59.51\00:13:01.54 about the sun. 00:13:01.58\00:13:02.91 You know, you stay out too long, 00:13:02.94\00:13:04.28 you get sunburn and that, 00:13:04.31\00:13:05.65 but we don't hear as much about the good things 00:13:05.68\00:13:08.25 and I admit too much sun is dangerous 00:13:08.28\00:13:11.05 but sun and being outside in God's nature, 00:13:11.09\00:13:13.59 getting that energy source from the true source. 00:13:13.62\00:13:16.83 So light's important for our physiology, 00:13:16.86\00:13:19.03 but also the light that comes from God's truth 00:13:19.06\00:13:22.40 is important for our brain physiology, 00:13:22.43\00:13:24.60 our core physiology just as well. 00:13:24.63\00:13:26.87 So when you're outside, 00:13:26.90\00:13:28.24 I want you to think about the light the truth 00:13:28.27\00:13:30.17 and how that also benefits your physiology. 00:13:30.21\00:13:32.91 Isn't this sort of interesting?
