"Don't worry, be happy" 00:00:01.06\00:00:03.87 and that's why we're trying to do today. 00:00:03.90\00:00:05.30 We're trying to learn how to be happy, 00:00:05.33\00:00:07.08 and we have to realize we're 6,000 years from the 00:00:07.11\00:00:09.52 Hand of the Creator, but even under these circumstances, 00:00:09.55\00:00:12.16 there are ways that we can bring joy 00:00:12.19\00:00:14.64 and happiness into our life, and Dr. Marcum has outlined 00:00:14.67\00:00:17.36 7 beautiful ways of doing that. 00:00:17.39\00:00:19.27 Let's get to our questions now and see if we can apply 00:00:19.30\00:00:21.03 some of those principles to these questions here, okay? 00:00:21.06\00:00:23.61 I like giving people things that they can do that 00:00:23.64\00:00:26.60 that's positive! It makes you happy! 00:00:26.63\00:00:28.06 You know and when you go to the doctor, 00:00:28.09\00:00:30.49 and you give them a pill or a prescription or something 00:00:30.52\00:00:33.64 ...you know that's not as fun as saying, 00:00:33.67\00:00:37.46 "I'm giving you this to do to change your chemistry, 00:00:37.49\00:00:40.01 give it a try and report back to me" 00:00:40.04\00:00:42.04 So that makes me happy when I can give someone else 00:00:42.07\00:00:44.25 something they actually WANT to do and it can embrace 00:00:44.28\00:00:47.26 to change their chemistry. I like it 00:00:47.29\00:00:48.63 Okay, here's our first question from 00:00:48.66\00:00:50.16 heartwiseministries. org 00:00:50.19\00:00:51.56 "Is it possible to treat depression without medications?" 00:00:51.59\00:00:55.80 Just how powerful is happiness? 00:00:55.83\00:00:58.02 Yeah, the answer to that - it is possible to treat 00:00:58.05\00:01:01.72 depression without medications and there are some great doctors 00:01:01.75\00:01:04.83 and psychiatrists out there that have written lots of things 00:01:04.86\00:01:08.37 about this and a lot of people don't realize that medications 00:01:08.40\00:01:11.87 aren't as successful as people think they are. 00:01:11.91\00:01:14.83 Just because you're on a medication, 00:01:14.86\00:01:16.33 doesn't mean your depression is going to be cured. 00:01:16.36\00:01:18.57 So it's not that high of a percentage of people 00:01:18.60\00:01:21.54 that are actually helped by the medications. 00:01:21.57\00:01:23.47 But, they've done things like improving your brain chemistry, 00:01:23.50\00:01:27.51 exercise, proper nutrition, meaningful things... 00:01:27.54\00:01:32.31 There's something called cognitive therapy 00:01:32.34\00:01:34.57 where you're learning to think and train your brain to 00:01:34.60\00:01:38.62 do these things right. 00:01:38.65\00:01:40.29 There are some biblical counselors that are helping 00:01:40.32\00:01:42.39 along those lines. 00:01:42.42\00:01:43.63 All these things make it possible that in some people, 00:01:43.66\00:01:46.45 it is possible not to take medicines for depression. 00:01:46.48\00:01:49.55 Now some people, have it so bad, genetically, that they do 00:01:49.58\00:01:53.43 need medicines for depression. 00:01:53.46\00:01:55.03 Some people need more than one medicine for depression. 00:01:55.06\00:01:57.39 Some people need extra therapy for depression, 00:01:57.42\00:01:59.57 but in some people, it is possible. 00:01:59.60\00:02:01.45 And right now, when so many people are on antidepressants, 00:02:01.48\00:02:04.26 I have to wonder a little bit, well maybe they didn't try 00:02:04.29\00:02:06.96 some other things FIRST and they just jumped to the 00:02:06.99\00:02:09.15 medicine because that might have been 00:02:09.18\00:02:10.58 the easiest thing to do at the time. 00:02:10.61\00:02:12.38 But I think it is possible to be off medicines, 00:02:12.41\00:02:14.54 and I think that a lot of other people would agree with me. 00:02:14.57\00:02:17.48 Here's a question again... "I have migraines every week, 00:02:17.51\00:02:23.35 what can I do for help?" 00:02:23.38\00:02:25.07 Is happiness a migraine attacker? 00:02:25.10\00:02:28.92 Well, it's not going to hurt, but you know, again, 00:02:28.95\00:02:31.31 what causes migraines? 00:02:31.34\00:02:33.54 That's a vascular headache usually caused by a 00:02:33.57\00:02:36.20 spasm of a blood vessel. 00:02:36.23\00:02:37.80 Sometimes it runs in families, sometimes we have 00:02:37.83\00:02:41.51 triggers that turn it on. 00:02:41.54\00:02:42.73 Migraines have lots of triggers. 00:02:42.76\00:02:44.80 Sometimes that trigger might be caffeine, a certain food, 00:02:44.83\00:02:48.67 doing a certain thing, a lack of sleep. 00:02:48.70\00:02:50.86 Things that might help lower the risk of having migraines 00:02:50.89\00:02:53.74 that I found to be very useful, now this is pretty dramatic... 00:02:53.77\00:02:57.56 But go to drinking nothing but water; 00:02:57.59\00:03:00.62 go to a plant-based diet, get all the chemicals out of 00:03:00.65\00:03:04.59 your diet - ALL of it out; 00:03:04.62\00:03:06.88 get on a regular exercise program to improve your 00:03:06.91\00:03:10.23 vascular tone and see what happens. 00:03:10.26\00:03:14.42 And there are some great medicines we use if you do have 00:03:14.45\00:03:17.18 genetic migraines, but I've had a lot of people that 00:03:17.21\00:03:19.43 just do that and guess what? 00:03:19.46\00:03:21.85 VOILA! It was something they were eating; 00:03:21.88\00:03:23.77 it was some chemical that they had in their diet. 00:03:23.81\00:03:26.20 They were maybe not getting enough sleep. 00:03:26.24\00:03:27.78 Something tended to trigger their bad genetics 00:03:27.81\00:03:29.97 to trigger these migraines, but that's the way to start, 00:03:30.00\00:03:33.61 and if that doesn't work, there are some medicines 00:03:33.64\00:03:35.38 that can be added on to that. 00:03:35.41\00:03:36.92 Here's a question that sort of goes along with this... 00:03:36.95\00:03:39.49 "Certain foods make my GI tract very unhappy" 00:03:39.52\00:03:41.88 Here are foods attacking a different part of the body. 00:03:41.91\00:03:44.35 Do I need to see a specialist, if you have an unhappy GI tract? 00:03:44.38\00:03:49.08 Well, it's according - I'm telling people, 00:03:49.11\00:03:51.72 as a general rule, if you see blood coming out, 00:03:51.75\00:03:54.67 if there is blood coming out, if you've lost a lot of weight, 00:03:54.70\00:03:58.32 if you can't swallow in your GI tract, 00:03:58.35\00:04:01.23 or if you're having pain regularly in your GI tract, 00:04:01.26\00:04:04.43 you need to have someone evaluate that. 00:04:04.46\00:04:07.16 That could be something serious from a bleeding ulcer, 00:04:07.19\00:04:10.03 to a lot of other more serious things in the GI tract. 00:04:10.06\00:04:14.27 If you just eat some food and it makes you feel bad, 00:04:14.30\00:04:17.35 then maybe you should experiment with eating healthier foods, 00:04:17.38\00:04:20.13 maybe you have a food allergy, a food that would trigger that. 00:04:20.16\00:04:23.66 Unfortunately, what I've seen is a lot of doctors 00:04:23.69\00:04:26.09 don't pay attention to nutrition. 00:04:26.12\00:04:29.56 What I like to do is, as soon as I make sure it's 00:04:29.59\00:04:32.30 nothing something terrible, 00:04:32.33\00:04:33.62 I say, "Well, let's do this FIRST, rather than 00:04:33.65\00:04:35.80 order a bunch of tests. " 00:04:35.83\00:04:38.14 "You know, you're not having bleeding, 00:04:38.17\00:04:39.89 you're not losing weight, you don't have an infection... 00:04:39.92\00:04:42.10 let's just try maybe switching some foods around, 00:04:42.13\00:04:44.63 maybe cutting back your dairy or cutting back 00:04:44.66\00:04:47.23 meat or cutting back this and see how you feel, 00:04:47.26\00:04:50.38 and if your body responds to that, 00:04:50.41\00:04:52.31 maybe nothing more needs to be done. " 00:04:52.34\00:04:54.49 So sometimes the food acts as an allergen 00:04:54.52\00:04:57.29 that stimulates the body to attack inside... 00:04:57.32\00:05:00.22 A lot of diseases we see that are like that. 00:05:00.25\00:05:03.60 We're talking about being happy here and here is 00:05:03.63\00:05:06.84 someone who is not happy at a certain time of the day. 00:05:06.87\00:05:10.40 "I am grumpy when I do not get sleep as well as 00:05:10.43\00:05:14.68 work too many hours at work" 00:05:14.71\00:05:16.64 In other words, you don't get enough sleep, 00:05:16.67\00:05:17.70 and you have too much work. 00:05:17.73\00:05:18.84 "I cannot quit my job" and then the question is... 00:05:18.87\00:05:22.30 "What energy drinks help?" 00:05:22.33\00:05:24.94 Is this a prime candidate for one of those little 00:05:24.97\00:05:27.35 5- hour energy drinks? 00:05:27.38\00:05:29.36 We talked about that energy drinks before. 00:05:29.39\00:05:32.12 The real solution is to find out why they don't feel good. 00:05:32.15\00:05:37.14 The energy drink is not the answer, 00:05:37.17\00:05:40.17 it's just treating a symptom. 00:05:40.20\00:05:42.27 The symptom is "I'm not feeling good" 00:05:42.30\00:05:44.52 Well, why am I not feeling good? 00:05:44.55\00:05:45.94 It sounds like this person is not getting enough rest. 00:05:45.97\00:05:49.37 So they're going to have to figure out how to rest more 00:05:49.40\00:05:52.10 in their lives and get it done. 00:05:52.13\00:05:55.90 Americans aren't resting anymore; 00:05:55.93\00:05:58.06 you know, we're staying up all night, 00:05:58.09\00:05:59.25 we're not taking our weekly rest, 00:05:59.28\00:06:00.86 we're not taking our nightly rest, 00:06:00.89\00:06:02.85 but when I encourage people to make it a priority, 00:06:02.88\00:06:05.76 and say, "Listen, I want you to dedicate yourself to having 00:06:05.79\00:06:08.43 a weekly rest, I want you to work harder 00:06:08.46\00:06:10.53 at resting at night" 00:06:10.56\00:06:11.64 "Do that for me for one week and see how you feel, 00:06:11.67\00:06:15.98 and if you start feeling better, having more energy, 00:06:16.01\00:06:18.81 ...almost everyone does, that gives you your real answer" 00:06:18.84\00:06:22.85 You don't need a quick fix that doesn't get at the problem. 00:06:22.88\00:06:25.69 You don't need a quick energy drink. 00:06:25.72\00:06:27.54 You need to get at the cause of the problem... 00:06:27.57\00:06:29.56 And that's what we have to do in medicine and in life, 00:06:29.59\00:06:31.98 we have to understand the causes, 00:06:32.01\00:06:33.92 not so much WHAT we do, but WHY we do the things; 00:06:33.95\00:06:37.25 what is the cause. 00:06:37.28\00:06:38.42 When we do that, we can truly find solutions. 00:06:38.45\00:06:41.21 Very good. Yeah 00:07:03.29\00:07:04.63 It could be a problem for your health. 00:07:04.66\00:07:06.52 And I see a lot of people that go out in happiness 00:07:06.55\00:07:10.23 and, you know, they look for 00:07:10.26\00:07:12.00 all sorts of things that make them happy. 00:07:12.04\00:07:13.46 Will it be... you know, lots of different things are out there, 00:07:13.50\00:07:16.39 bad things, drugs, alcohol. 00:07:16.42\00:07:18.87 They look for things that bring them 00:07:18.90\00:07:20.85 temporary happiness but it doesn't really bring them 00:07:20.88\00:07:23.23 long-term happiness and I think that that's why 00:07:23.26\00:07:27.92 in my list of 7 things, I think people need to really 00:07:27.95\00:07:30.80 understand - Well, what does God define as happiness? 00:07:30.83\00:07:37.30 The world defines happiness different than 00:07:37.33\00:07:39.32 God defines happiness. 00:07:39.35\00:07:43.04 And the Lord, when He was here, He spent a lot of time 00:07:43.07\00:07:45.52 helping people, visiting with friends, loving on people. 00:07:45.55\00:07:48.97 You know, I'd like to think that He was happy in His service. 00:07:49.00\00:07:52.18 Serving our Master Creator, that should be the definition 00:07:52.21\00:07:55.47 of happiness! Shouldn't it? One of the definitions. 00:07:55.50\00:07:57.73 So I want to encourage this person to not do that 00:07:57.76\00:08:00.24 alcohol - you know, it could lead to a bad habit, 00:08:00.27\00:08:03.73 and go back and look for real, honest truth of happiness, 00:08:03.76\00:08:08.11 not what the world teaches is happy, 00:08:08.14\00:08:10.08 but what is the definition of true happiness. 00:08:10.11\00:08:12.40 All right, very good. 00:08:12.43\00:08:13.59 I like this question right here and I'm sure there are people 00:08:13.62\00:08:17.74 listening and watching who can identify with it. 00:08:17.77\00:08:20.32 "I was in the dumps and bought a boat" OKAY! 00:08:20.35\00:08:24.53 "Still feel no better; everything is okay at home; 00:08:24.56\00:08:28.72 I was started on medications for blood pressure a month ago, 00:08:28.75\00:08:32.36 could this be changing my moods?" 00:08:32.39\00:08:34.45 Now, are we talking about the boat 00:08:34.48\00:08:35.84 or the blood pressure medicine? 00:08:35.87\00:08:37.17 Hmmmm, so it sounds like this fellow was in the mood, 00:08:37.20\00:08:41.12 so he bought a boat to make him feel better. Yeah 00:08:41.15\00:08:43.65 And in the process, I don't know which came first 00:08:43.68\00:08:46.37 with the boat, but yes, all the medications can have 00:08:46.40\00:08:49.89 side effects. 00:08:49.92\00:08:51.50 Well I guess if the boat didn't work, 00:08:51.53\00:08:53.03 he tried the medications, I guess. 00:08:53.06\00:08:54.61 I don't know, I don't know which came first on this fellow, 00:08:54.64\00:08:56.59 but you know what, it's possible any medication 00:08:56.62\00:08:59.08 could have a side effect. 00:08:59.11\00:09:00.19 But don't we do that, don't we say, 00:09:00.22\00:09:01.73 "I'm feeling bad, so I'm going to go buy something" 00:09:01.76\00:09:03.32 I'm going to get a new something into my life 00:09:03.35\00:09:05.88 that's going to make me feel good. 00:09:05.91\00:09:07.10 And when we don't feel good, we say, 00:09:07.13\00:09:08.74 "Oh my goodness, what is WRONG with me 00:09:08.77\00:09:10.87 that I have this nice, cool boat or car or iPhone 00:09:10.90\00:09:15.42 or widescreen TV, I don't feel any better. 00:09:15.45\00:09:18.07 I better go see the doctor for some medicines. " 00:10:28.42\00:10:31.35 But one thing that I always can do is I can pray to God 00:10:31.38\00:10:35.44 who knows everything and who can take care of problems, 00:10:35.47\00:10:38.95 so I can always offer a prayer and I'm going to offer 00:10:38.98\00:10:41.33 a prayer to this fellow as well.
