Fatigue, insomnia, moodiness, hot flashes OR 00:00:17.11\00:00:22.33 coronary artery disease, breast cancer, stroke, 00:00:22.36\00:00:26.12 pulmonary embolism... Do we really have to choose? 00:00:26.15\00:00:30.43 Stay tuned... 00:00:30.46\00:00:31.70 I'm Dr. James Marcum 00:00:32.20\00:00:33.95 Are you interested in discovering the reason why? 00:00:33.98\00:00:37.67 Do you want solutions to your healthcare problems? 00:00:37.70\00:00:40.04 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:00:40.07\00:00:42.93 Well, you're about to be given the "Ultimate Prescription" 00:00:42.96\00:00:47.57 Hormone replacement therapy, hot topic these days, 00:00:50.95\00:00:54.59 has been for over a decade, do we or don't we? 00:00:54.62\00:00:58.95 What do studies say? What do doctors say? 00:00:58.98\00:01:02.60 More importantly, what does God say? 00:01:02.63\00:01:05.76 Let's look into this matter with one eye on science, 00:01:05.79\00:01:08.54 and the other eye on the biblical principles of health. 00:01:08.57\00:01:11.76 Dr. Marcum, lead the way! 00:01:11.79\00:01:13.55 Well, you know, this is a very interesting topic. 00:01:13.58\00:01:18.88 There's not going to be, sometimes, a right or wrong. 00:01:18.91\00:01:21.18 It might be a little bit gray, but let's look and see what 00:01:21.21\00:01:23.83 some people are saying about it, 00:01:23.86\00:01:25.12 and then put our sort of spin on it today, Charles. 00:01:25.15\00:01:28.14 Denise Grady has recently reported in the New York Times 00:01:28.17\00:01:33.33 on a new study released in the 00:01:33.43\00:01:35.73 Journal of the American Medical Association 00:01:35.76\00:01:38.18 Now that is our main medical journal that we use to get 00:01:38.21\00:01:41.91 information. 00:01:41.94\00:01:43.02 And this report is to include the extended follow-up 00:01:43.05\00:01:47.63 6-8 years after the original federally funded 00:01:47.66\00:01:51.41 Women's Health Initiative. 00:01:51.44\00:01:53.21 That was the big, large study 00:01:53.24\00:01:55.96 that really shook things up a few years ago. 00:01:55.99\00:01:58.77 And this basically was a study that showed that 00:01:58.80\00:02:00.89 for years hormones were given to women carte blanche. 00:02:00.92\00:02:05.98 Everyone was feeling good about that, 00:02:06.01\00:02:08.50 then they published this Women's Health Initiative 00:02:08.53\00:02:10.75 and said that there are some risks, 00:02:10.78\00:02:12.25 and since then there have been 00:02:12.28\00:02:13.67 debates on both sides of the fence. 00:02:13.70\00:02:15.65 Some people say, "Oh, these are too dangerous to be given" 00:02:15.68\00:02:18.82 and back and forth. 00:02:18.85\00:02:20.50 So one of the things I think we have to do is at least 00:02:20.53\00:02:22.73 talk about it and see what people are saying, 00:02:22.76\00:02:24.95 and see if we can come to some type of conclusion. 00:02:24.98\00:02:28.56 So Denise Grady reported on this background, 00:02:28.59\00:02:32.72 and just to give people some background... 00:02:32.75\00:02:34.56 It was in 2002 that the Women's Health Initiative was released, 00:02:34.59\00:02:39.23 and it really put a lot of scare into women taking these hormones 00:02:39.26\00:02:42.64 as well as the doctors. 00:02:42.67\00:02:45.10 The study followed 16,608 women; 00:02:45.13\00:02:49.83 that's how many people were in the study. 00:02:49.86\00:02:51.86 They were aged from age 50 to 79, 00:02:51.89\00:02:55.56 a typical postmenopausal age. 00:02:55.59\00:02:58.59 And they concluded after the study of these 16,000, 00:02:58.62\00:03:01.74 that hormone replacement therapy, 00:03:01.77\00:03:04.13 giving it to these women, increased the risk of the 00:03:04.16\00:03:06.91 things you talked about... coronary artery disease, 00:03:06.94\00:03:09.42 breast cancer, uterine cancer, stroke, pulmonary embolism 00:03:09.45\00:03:14.93 blood clots in the lung. 00:03:14.96\00:03:16.29 And from 2001-2008, there was about a 70% reduction 00:03:16.32\00:03:23.53 in the number of women on hormone replacement therapy, 00:03:23.56\00:03:26.72 and then guess what happened? 00:03:26.75\00:03:29.07 All of a sudden, a new industry started to come up. 00:03:29.10\00:03:32.55 Instead of hormone replacement, we had things like 00:03:32.58\00:03:35.22 bioidentical hormones and other things sort of came 00:03:35.25\00:03:38.39 to replace this because the problem was still there, 00:03:38.42\00:03:41.84 but there was no real treatment for these symptoms, 00:03:41.87\00:03:44.66 so we had new problems and some of the treatments 00:03:44.69\00:03:48.45 that were needed were treatments for fatigue, 00:03:48.48\00:03:51.37 insomnia, moodiness, hot flashes, decreased libido, 00:03:51.40\00:03:57.34 temperature variations, lots of other female-related 00:03:57.37\00:04:01.44 issues and, I'm not a female, but I've talked to patients, 00:04:01.47\00:04:05.04 and these can be devastating, 00:04:05.07\00:04:07.14 and they can just take someone's life away. 00:04:07.17\00:04:09.92 Now some people aren't affected as much as others, 00:04:09.95\00:04:13.09 but this is a big problem. 00:04:13.12\00:04:14.69 Well, the reduction in these hormone replacement therapies 00:04:14.72\00:04:18.43 resulted in a total of 60% money less being spent 00:04:18.46\00:04:22.45 or about 83.3 billion dollars. 00:04:22.48\00:04:26.89 So all of a sudden these new products to treat these symptoms 00:04:26.92\00:04:30.25 quickly developed. 00:04:30.28\00:04:32.03 Some had some science behind it, 00:04:32.06\00:04:33.86 some didn't have science behind it. 00:04:33.89\00:04:37.87 Also, people continue to argue that hormone replacement 00:04:37.90\00:04:41.24 therapy could not improve symptoms; 00:04:41.27\00:04:44.06 they made a bunch of arguments about all this stuff. 00:04:44.09\00:04:47.31 Well, so it really put pressures on doctors because if a 00:04:47.34\00:04:51.59 lady had had a heart attack, 00:04:51.62\00:04:53.23 and they were taking hormone replacements... 00:04:53.26\00:04:55.75 ...If I said you can still have it and they have a heart attack, 00:04:55.78\00:04:59.28 I'm a bad doctor! 00:04:59.31\00:05:00.80 But what if the symptoms were so devastating, 00:05:00.83\00:05:03.69 that the symptoms were riskier to her 00:05:03.72\00:05:06.40 than actually taking the pill? 00:05:06.43\00:05:08.33 These were sort of some of the dilemmas that we had to face on. 00:05:08.36\00:05:12.79 Many natural treatments are out there, 00:05:12.82\00:05:15.82 and they reported in this study including black cohosh, 00:05:15.85\00:05:19.58 some people take that, some people find relief from that. 00:05:19.61\00:05:22.42 Red clover, valerian, hops, chasteberry. 00:05:22.45\00:05:26.71 There is breathing exercises that are out there. 00:05:26.74\00:05:28.86 Relaxation techniques. 00:05:28.89\00:05:31.33 Lots of things become widespread. 00:05:31.36\00:05:33.88 Bioidentical hormones - you've probably heard of that. 00:05:33.91\00:05:36.41 But, the Mayo Clinic says that 00:05:36.44\00:05:38.90 they're really not safer than regular hormones. 00:05:38.93\00:05:41.71 So this was all the background that this article 00:05:41.74\00:05:44.12 looking at these people moving forward. 00:05:44.15\00:05:46.32 So now we have a report looking at these people 8 years... 00:05:46.35\00:05:49.00 What happened to them? 00:05:49.03\00:05:50.12 Well, Denise Grady reported that for every 10,000 women 00:05:50.15\00:05:55.73 taking hormone replacements, ... 10,000 00:05:55.76\00:05:58.85 there were 6 additional heart problems in 10,000, 00:05:58.88\00:06:03.65 9 more strokes, 9 more blood clots, 00:06:03.68\00:06:07.87 and 9 more cases of breast cancer in all those years. 00:06:07.90\00:06:12.45 The numbers didn't sound that big, did they? No 00:06:12.48\00:06:14.96 On the plus side, there were 00:06:14.99\00:06:17.87 6 few cases of colorectal cancer, that was good. 00:06:17.90\00:06:21.60 Six fewer hip fractures - that seemed to help the bones some. 00:06:21.63\00:06:24.81 And the Harvard researchers that did this study concluded 00:06:24.84\00:06:28.69 that the finding should not be used as a basis for 00:06:28.72\00:06:32.77 denying women treatment if they're in early menopause, 00:06:32.80\00:06:36.21 and having significant distressing symptoms. 00:06:36.24\00:06:39.11 The early studies did not look at treating people early on, 00:06:39.14\00:06:42.53 and that's why it's so important when people 00:06:42.56\00:06:45.25 are talking about studies and data that we really 00:06:45.28\00:06:48.47 look at this objectively and have someone look at the 00:06:48.50\00:06:51.31 study that can actually look at it intelligently. 00:06:51.34\00:06:53.88 So here's the study that people are criticizing it - 00:06:53.91\00:06:57.79 you know there are some just criticizing going on, 00:06:57.82\00:07:01.34 and now they're saying that early in menopause, 00:07:01.37\00:07:03.31 you know it didn't justify when you look at the absolute 00:07:03.34\00:07:05.49 number and it wasn't that large. 00:07:05.52\00:07:08.07 Well, the debate continues as hormone replacement 00:07:08.10\00:07:11.90 is a boom to women's comfort. 00:07:11.93\00:07:14.20 Now, we're talking about men having the problems, 00:07:14.23\00:07:17.55 the male menopause and testosterone replacements. 00:07:17.58\00:07:20.65 What is the answer? 00:07:20.68\00:07:23.18 Boy, what is the answer to this question? 00:07:23.21\00:07:25.81 Now let's talk a little bit about this... 00:07:25.84\00:07:28.51 What is the real answer? 00:07:28.54\00:07:29.87 Well, for years and years, in the history of the earth, 00:07:29.90\00:07:34.74 we did not have these hormone replacements, we did not have it 00:07:34.77\00:07:39.15 BUT, the earth was much different as far as toxins, 00:07:39.18\00:07:43.61 as far as the spread of different things from 00:07:43.64\00:07:45.99 person to person, as well as turning on and off hormones, 00:07:46.02\00:07:48.97 the world was a different place too. 00:07:49.00\00:07:51.27 But I try to tell people, women that are having that, 00:07:51.30\00:07:54.92 I say, "Well, let's try to do things as 00:07:54.95\00:07:56.64 much natural as we can. " 00:07:56.67\00:07:59.07 Exercise is one of the best things 00:07:59.10\00:08:00.92 I think that helps menopause out - doing a lot of exercise. 00:08:00.95\00:08:04.22 Of course, eating a health diet that helps. 00:08:04.25\00:08:06.21 But there are some people that despite that, 00:08:06.24\00:08:08.63 they're still having terrible, terrible symptoms. 00:08:08.66\00:08:11.31 And sometimes, I think in some people, 00:08:11.34\00:08:14.19 the symptoms are so bad, and it's ruining their lives 00:08:14.22\00:08:16.88 in so many ways, that the benefit of taking 00:08:16.91\00:08:19.48 a hormone replacement is worth the risk, 00:08:19.51\00:08:22.12 and that has to be very much individualized, 00:08:22.15\00:08:24.58 but I want the people before they go to that, 00:08:24.61\00:08:26.88 to try everything that they can within their own power 00:08:26.91\00:08:29.59 to get through this. 00:08:29.62\00:08:30.98 So this is a big issue, Charles. 00:08:31.01\00:08:33.41 There is lots of money involved in this issue. 00:08:33.44\00:08:36.05 There are drugs involved in this issue. 00:08:36.08\00:08:38.51 It's going to continue, and it's a shame, 00:08:38.54\00:08:41.20 it's a shame, what I don't really understand, 00:08:41.23\00:08:43.76 I don't think I have the answer for it is... 00:08:43.79\00:08:45.66 Well why, for many, many years, we never had this? 00:08:45.69\00:08:50.45 Male testosterone too - we never had this before. 00:08:50.48\00:08:53.33 Why do we need it? Is this a manufactured problem? 00:08:53.37\00:08:56.19 Well, that's the debate... 00:08:56.47\00:08:57.91 Is it manufactured, is there something in our 00:08:57.94\00:09:00.23 food supply that maybe people are eating... 00:09:00.26\00:09:03.05 We know that hormones are passed from animals to humans, 00:09:03.08\00:09:06.29 maybe that's upsetting balance, 00:09:06.32\00:09:08.06 maybe the mental stress that's going on in this world is 00:09:08.09\00:09:11.17 changing the way we affect... Needless to say... 00:09:11.21\00:09:14.28 I think of all of the above on that... Yes 00:09:14.31\00:09:15.49 I think all of the stuff that we're doing, 00:09:15.52\00:09:17.79 and that's why it makes these medical issues so tough 00:09:17.82\00:09:21.13 to deal with. 00:09:21.16\00:09:22.23 So in my practice, for hormone replacement therapy, 00:09:22.26\00:09:25.11 I'm trying not to do it, especially if they have 00:09:25.14\00:09:27.38 risk factors, but if they're early-on, 00:09:27.41\00:09:30.01 I think the data early-on in menopause 00:09:30.04\00:09:31.93 that says it's an okay thing to do, 00:09:31.96\00:09:33.58 and then if women have just terrible, terrible symptoms, 00:09:33.61\00:09:37.31 you have to say - Which is going to cause you worse, 00:09:37.34\00:09:40.90 ...getting so angry and getting these hot flashes, 00:09:40.93\00:09:43.32 and having the adrenalin go up so high, 00:09:43.35\00:09:45.50 or the actual risk of it? 00:09:45.53\00:09:47.29 And they never really studied 00:09:47.32\00:09:48.83 women that had the most severe symptoms. 00:09:48.86\00:09:50.92 You know, looking at that study, it shows conclusively 00:09:50.95\00:09:55.44 that of those 10,000 women, 00:09:55.47\00:09:57.87 9,950 of them did NOT have a problem with it. Right 00:09:57.90\00:10:04.35 Just because there's a potential problem, 00:10:04.38\00:10:06.93 doesn't mean you should not do it. 00:10:06.96\00:10:09.09 OR should you, I mean... 00:10:09.12\00:10:12.14 How do you come from a study like that and decide for you? 00:10:12.17\00:10:16.27 You say, "Well, I'm not a lucky person, 00:10:16.30\00:10:17.56 I'm probably going to have the problem" 00:10:17.59\00:10:19.04 And that's why I think that you, sometimes, 00:10:19.07\00:10:22.52 are your own best doctors. 00:10:22.55\00:10:24.16 Remember, it's sad to say, but sometimes your own doctor 00:10:24.19\00:10:27.75 doesn't look at all the details and know everything that 00:10:27.78\00:10:30.70 he needs to know about you inside. 00:10:30.73\00:10:32.60 But you try the natural stuff first! 00:10:32.63\00:10:34.33 I mean, I would not just jump into this stuff. 00:10:34.36\00:10:36.32 No, you know, you can try the exercise. 00:10:36.35\00:10:38.78 You can try the natural stuff, and then sometimes despite that 00:10:38.81\00:10:42.37 it still doesn't do the job. 00:10:42.40\00:10:43.94 Then you make a decision. Right 00:10:43.97\00:10:45.23 And then you have to make, sometimes, these tough decisions 00:10:45.26\00:10:48.63 and looking at the data. 00:10:48.66\00:10:49.70 And what I tell people, I say listen... 00:10:49.73\00:10:51.57 "The data shows that you've had a heart problem before, 00:10:51.60\00:10:55.25 you are going to be at a higher risk" 00:10:55.28\00:10:58.00 But there's never been a study that shows lots of women that 00:10:58.03\00:11:00.70 had this kind of symptom that tried to do everything this... 00:11:00.73\00:11:03.64 So you have to make a decision based on the risk and benefits 00:11:03.67\00:11:08.67 and MAYBE you don't have all the data. 00:11:08.70\00:11:11.67 You know, maybe you don't make decisions without data. 00:11:11.70\00:11:14.39 And I think THAT is the art of medicine... 00:11:14.42\00:11:17.90 is working with people based on the relationship 00:11:17.93\00:11:20.47 you have with them and coming up with something that's reasonable 00:11:20.50\00:11:24.51 I've had some people, you know, they used to have 00:11:24.54\00:11:26.62 another medicine that had inflammation 00:11:26.65\00:11:28.69 that they took off the market several years ago. 00:11:28.72\00:11:31.82 And some people had such bad inflammatory arthritis 00:11:31.85\00:11:35.06 that they would rather take that because the risk of that. 00:11:35.09\00:11:38.08 No one has ever studied certain things. 00:11:38.11\00:11:40.81 So there are certain things that has to be 00:11:40.84\00:11:42.46 between a patient and a doctor based on a relationship. 00:11:42.49\00:11:45.98 That relationship - you know, I don't know the answer, 00:11:46.01\00:11:48.66 but I think it's reasonable. 00:11:48.69\00:11:50.65 Now some doctors are so rigid, that they don't do it. 00:11:50.68\00:11:53.39 I'm afraid that in our world, that we're losing 00:11:53.42\00:11:56.16 relationships. 00:11:56.19\00:11:57.77 We're losing that aspect of medicine, 00:11:57.80\00:11:59.93 and it's going to be - "Well, you're this, 00:11:59.96\00:12:01.55 you can't have this, you can have this, 00:12:01.58\00:12:02.98 you can't have this" 00:12:03.01\00:12:04.84 But I wanted to bring this up today just to let people 00:12:04.87\00:12:08.05 know it's not all black and white sometimes. 00:12:08.08\00:12:10.29 So there was no part of the study that says... 00:12:10.32\00:12:12.49 If you do the natural things, this is what happens to you? 00:12:12.52\00:12:15.82 No, they didn't look into that and most of the things 00:12:15.85\00:12:18.43 that come naturally, no one funds those studies. 00:12:18.46\00:12:22.36 People that exercise, that eat well, that do this... 00:12:22.39\00:12:27.00 and that's why some of the best studies out there 00:12:27.03\00:12:30.09 have never been done, nor will they ever do. 00:12:30.12\00:12:32.51 I would LOVE, Charles, to take these studies that we have 00:12:32.54\00:12:35.55 about exercise and diet and a day of rest, and service, 00:12:35.58\00:12:39.36 and worship and look at these logs and say... 00:12:39.39\00:12:41.59 "Listen, these are people that did this. 00:12:41.62\00:12:43.35 This is their heart attack rates. 00:12:43.38\00:12:44.94 These are the people that did this, 00:12:44.97\00:12:46.17 and this is the heart attack rates" 00:12:46.20\00:12:47.44 I know what the answers would show. Yes 00:12:47.47\00:12:49.66 I know what the answers would show but there is not a 00:12:49.69\00:12:51.76 financial gain to be doing that, so no one is going to pay. 00:12:51.79\00:12:54.66 Now, there are some people that are doing these; 00:12:54.69\00:12:56.52 looking at groups of people. 00:12:56.55\00:12:57.98 Yeah, the Adventist Health Study #2 00:12:58.01\00:12:59.75 And that's going to be a very interesting study 00:12:59.78\00:13:01.95 to show these things and that will give us some information 00:13:01.98\00:13:04.56 to give to other people to let them know 00:13:04.59\00:13:07.24 that, yes, you're on the right path - this is reasonable. 00:13:07.27\00:13:09.69 Well, preliminary results from the Adventist Health Study #2 00:13:09.72\00:13:12.66 are showing conclusively that the closer you get back 00:13:12.69\00:13:14.92 to God's ideal, the healthier you are across the board! 00:13:14.95\00:13:17.98 And that is an important study to let other people know, 00:13:18.01\00:13:20.61 and that validates what many people 00:13:20.64\00:13:22.89 have been saying all along. 00:13:22.92\00:13:25.15 So it's not always... sometimes things in life 00:13:25.18\00:13:27.93 are a little bit on the gray side. 00:13:27.96\00:13:29.44 It's not always in the black and 00:13:29.47\00:13:30.73 white for every individual person. 00:13:30.76\00:13:33.08 That's what sin brought into this world, 00:13:33.11\00:13:35.31 a grayness into our lives. 00:13:35.34\00:13:37.43 It no longer was black and white - there's this gray area 00:13:37.46\00:13:39.91 Sin makes sure there's lots of gray area there. 00:13:39.94\00:13:42.04 We'll come back with your questions from 00:13:42.07\00:13:43.80 heartwiseministries. org 00:13:43.83\00:13:45.33 in just a minute, so stay tuned... 00:13:45.37\00:13:47.40
