How do we use them? 00:00:38.34\00:00:41.25 Well you know my saying here is we try to love people 00:00:41.28\00:00:45.76 and not judge them. 00:00:45.79\00:00:47.43 I've learned in taking care of people that smoke, 00:00:47.46\00:00:50.09 and I take care of lots of people that smoke 00:00:50.12\00:00:52.01 because they end up in cardiology offices 00:00:52.04\00:00:53.52 because they have heart attacks. 00:00:53.55\00:00:55.11 Many different ways to work with people... 00:00:55.14\00:01:00.65 The 2 things that I think they MUST have 00:01:00.68\00:01:03.11 is they must have support from doctors, from friends, 00:01:03.14\00:01:07.47 from churches, from someone that must support them 00:01:07.50\00:01:10.82 to give them the encouragement, YES, you can do this! 00:01:10.85\00:01:13.13 This is a journey, we're going to travel this together! 00:01:13.16\00:01:16.56 And #2, they also, in addition to support, 00:01:16.59\00:01:20.41 it's very important that they have at least 00:01:20.44\00:01:22.42 some desire on their own. 00:01:22.46\00:01:24.44 Now that's IT, doesn't smoking destroy the desire? 00:01:24.48\00:01:27.92 I mean, aren't we talking about something that 00:01:27.95\00:01:29.85 actually keeps you from fixing yourself from it 00:01:29.88\00:01:32.96 because it's a habit? 00:01:32.99\00:01:34.44 Now remember, smoking turns on some of the stress pathways, 00:01:34.47\00:01:39.22 makes our brain go fast, so the thinking part of the brain 00:01:39.25\00:01:42.51 is not very good and it's very addictive. 00:01:42.54\00:01:45.77 So you get these pleasure pathways, 00:01:45.80\00:01:48.08 these nicotine paths, they're strong cords, 00:01:48.11\00:01:51.47 they're very hard to break. 00:01:51.50\00:01:53.02 Some people say that there's nothing harder in life 00:01:53.05\00:01:56.78 than breaking the nicotine habit. 00:01:56.81\00:01:59.26 It's the most potent addictive substance we have known for man. 00:01:59.29\00:02:03.24 It must be true because that's 00:02:03.27\00:02:04.93 why so many people are still smoking. 00:02:04.96\00:02:07.02 It's very addictive and a lot of people, when they start, 00:02:07.05\00:02:09.69 they have no idea how bad that it is; 00:02:09.72\00:02:11.65 they have no idea how hard it is to stop. 00:02:11.68\00:02:14.35 So getting back to our question... 00:02:14.38\00:02:16.27 These things are important. 00:02:16.30\00:02:17.45 You gotta have support and I think you have to want it 00:02:17.48\00:02:19.74 at some level yourself. 00:02:19.77\00:02:21.46 Either want it to help your family, 00:02:21.49\00:02:24.50 want it to help yourself, to serve God better; 00:02:24.53\00:02:27.43 something in it that you have to want - those 2 components. 00:02:27.46\00:02:30.44 Now, there are many ways to quit smoking 00:02:30.47\00:02:33.45 that will help aid in that. 00:02:33.48\00:02:35.18 One is E-Cigarettes. 00:02:35.21\00:02:37.33 E- Cigarettes are electronic cigarettes. 00:02:37.36\00:02:41.33 They are a little bit heavier. 00:02:41.36\00:02:43.88 I've never used them, but other people have. 00:02:43.91\00:02:46.91 They also release nicotine, but supposedly the plan is to 00:02:46.94\00:02:50.60 release less and less to slowly take away the addiction, 00:02:50.63\00:02:55.20 okay, slowly over time. 00:02:55.23\00:02:56.47 The same way it works with the patches. 00:02:56.50\00:02:59.09 Some people have a stronger patch, a lesser patch, 00:02:59.12\00:03:01.92 and a lesser patch. 00:03:01.95\00:03:03.13 What does NOT work is if you take E-Cigarettes 00:03:03.16\00:03:06.49 AND you smoke or if you take the patch AND you smoke, 00:03:06.52\00:03:10.37 then you get double the whammy and becomes to get more harder. 00:03:10.40\00:03:13.97 Now some people are using prescription medications, 00:03:14.00\00:03:18.21 and for some people that works as well. 00:03:18.24\00:03:20.67 But remember, there's always a risk versus the medicine 00:03:20.70\00:03:23.65 versus the benefits. 00:03:23.68\00:03:25.47 So it usually takes a lot of different approaches. 00:03:25.50\00:03:28.76 Some people work in classes with these 5-Day Plans, 00:03:28.79\00:03:32.04 the 3-Day Plans. 00:03:32.07\00:03:33.44 Sometimes a doctor can work with the patient. 00:03:33.47\00:03:35.84 Sometimes I can tell a patient and I say, 00:03:35.87\00:03:37.62 "Listen, you really need to quit smoking, here's all the reasons" 00:03:37.65\00:03:41.75 I'll try to educate them. 00:03:41.78\00:03:43.11 Then the next thing I'll say is, 00:03:43.14\00:03:44.76 "Do you think you need some help, 00:03:44.79\00:03:46.62 or do you want to do it on your own?" 00:03:46.65\00:03:48.54 And if he says, "Well, let me try it on my own" 00:03:48.57\00:03:50.43 I'll say, "Well let's cut back" 00:03:50.46\00:03:53.75 Some people can do cold turkey but I find that the minority. 00:03:53.78\00:03:57.11 I have them take less and less. 00:03:57.14\00:03:58.97 "Now maybe you can do 5 this week and then 4 this week, 00:03:59.00\00:04:01.83 then 3, then 2, then 1," and then I ask them, 00:04:01.86\00:04:05.10 "You have to replace the hand habit" 00:04:05.13\00:04:07.73 Replace it with something else, maybe chewing gum 00:04:07.76\00:04:10.45 or pixie sticks or chewing a straw, 00:04:10.48\00:04:12.97 or a toothpick or something else. 00:04:13.00\00:04:15.13 You have to have people that will help you and remind you, 00:04:15.16\00:04:18.22 and then I tell them it's very important that you replace 00:04:18.25\00:04:21.61 a good habit with a bad habit. 00:04:21.64\00:04:23.36 So every time you get that terrible desire to smoke, 00:04:23.39\00:04:26.29 we'll do something - go to the Scripture, read a Scripture. 00:04:26.32\00:04:30.09 In other words, though cigarette-smoking has taken 00:04:30.12\00:04:31.81 that bad habit has replaced good habits. 00:04:31.84\00:04:33.49 Now you're saying, let's reverse that, 00:04:33.52\00:04:34.86 let's go from bad to good. 00:04:34.89\00:04:36.20 Yes, let's find something... when you want to have 00:04:36.23\00:04:37.96 that bad habit, replace it with something good! 00:04:37.99\00:04:40.84 Go for a walk, sing a song, read a passage of Scripture, 00:04:40.87\00:04:45.41 call your friend, break the pathway. 00:04:45.44\00:04:48.04 Now, statistics show that most people, Charles, 00:04:48.07\00:04:51.81 don't quit the first time, it's a journey. 00:04:51.84\00:04:55.20 So I tell people, just because you quit smoking, 00:04:55.23\00:04:57.57 you know, you start smoking again, don't beat yourself up. 00:04:57.60\00:05:01.17 Figure out what in your plan didn't work. 00:05:01.20\00:05:04.44 Was it - you didn't have enough support? 00:05:04.47\00:05:06.42 Did you not really want to do it yourself? 00:05:06.45\00:05:09.02 Did you not wean yourself down? 00:05:09.05\00:05:11.00 Did you not have a substitution? 00:05:11.03\00:05:13.04 A lot of people just do it because... 00:05:13.07\00:05:15.13 I asked them, "Well why did you start smoking again?" 00:05:15.16\00:05:17.71 "I got bored. " Well, have a plan for that! 00:05:17.74\00:05:20.57 "I got nervous" Well, have a plan for that! 00:05:20.60\00:05:23.18 Or, "I was around some friends that smoked" 00:05:23.21\00:05:27.39 So each scenario that comes around, have a plan. 00:05:27.42\00:05:30.27 It might take you 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 times to quit smoking. 00:05:30.30\00:05:34.68 This is a very addictive habit. 00:05:34.71\00:05:36.47 I can't say I fully understand it, Charles, 00:05:36.50\00:05:39.28 because I've never smoked before, 00:05:39.31\00:05:41.22 but I watch people that do it and it's just like it's a 00:05:41.25\00:05:44.59 BATTLE inside them. 00:05:44.62\00:05:46.35 And I just applaud people that are able to do that 00:05:46.38\00:05:49.27 because if they could do that, they could do anything. 00:05:49.30\00:05:51.44 But what an opportunity for us now, 00:05:51.47\00:05:54.15 for people that are interested in health, to help people 00:05:54.18\00:05:57.11 to come up with great plans, to help them to this... 00:05:57.14\00:06:00.21 We're going to see more and more people interested... 00:06:00.24\00:06:02.31 We're going to see the government reimbursing for it. 00:06:02.34\00:06:04.59 There's going to be a lot of that desire that we 00:06:04.62\00:06:06.97 haven't had before. 00:06:07.00\00:06:08.03 Now, we need to supply the support and give them 00:06:08.06\00:06:10.64 the mechanisms to be able to beat this habit. 00:06:10.67\00:06:13.67 But at the same time, we need to point them 00:06:13.70\00:06:16.01 to the real source - the real source of your power 00:06:16.04\00:06:19.44 to do things for the right reasons. 00:06:19.47\00:06:21.05 Who are you doing this for? 00:06:21.08\00:06:22.25 Are you doing it for yourself and for selfish reasons, 00:06:22.28\00:06:24.64 or are you doing it for a God that loves you 00:06:24.67\00:06:26.87 and wants you to feel better. 00:06:26.90\00:06:28.53 I like that - I like that! Doing it for God. 00:06:28.56\00:06:31.05 God has done so much for us, 00:06:31.08\00:06:32.55 now, we can do a little bit for Him. 00:06:32.58\00:06:33.72 What a good idea that is! Maybe we can appeal to people's vanity. 00:06:38.47\00:06:42.65 "Is it true that cigarettes cause you to AGE faster?" 00:06:42.68\00:06:45.29 Now what does it mean - how do you age faster by smoking? 00:06:45.32\00:06:48.03 That is absolutely true. It is? 00:06:48.06\00:06:50.09 When you smoke cigarettes, it damages your skin. 00:06:50.12\00:06:53.59 Have you ever looked at a smoker, look at him, 00:06:53.62\00:06:56.75 you know, someone that might be in their 30s or 40s, 00:06:56.78\00:06:59.36 they look much OLDER because actually the nicotine, 00:06:59.39\00:07:02.60 it actually damages - the cigarette smoking, 00:07:02.63\00:07:05.72 the whole process, the chemicals damages the skin, 00:07:05.75\00:07:09.58 it increases the aging process. 00:07:09.61\00:07:11.82 Anything, Charles... here's another step, 00:07:11.85\00:07:14.26 anything that causes this chronic stress accelerates aging 00:07:14.29\00:07:18.60 You see what I'm saying? 00:07:18.63\00:07:20.06 So cigarettes really accelerates aging. 00:07:20.10\00:07:22.37 That's a major stressor on our body at many levels, 00:07:22.40\00:07:25.58 so it's going to super accelerate. 00:07:25.61\00:07:27.08 Some people can do that just 00:07:27.11\00:07:28.36 because they want to prevent aging. 00:07:28.39\00:07:30.57 All right, here's a question again from 00:07:30.60\00:07:33.11 heartwiseministries. org 00:07:33.14\00:07:35.73 "If you don't smoke, how about chewing it?" 00:07:35.76\00:07:39.07 "Chewing tobacco, is this a good thing?" 00:07:39.10\00:07:41.48 Well, you know, everyone asks that question, 00:07:41.51\00:07:45.56 "Is chewing a good thing?" 00:07:45.59\00:07:47.17 I would say, "No, it's not a good thing" 00:07:47.20\00:07:50.25 Why is that? 00:07:50.28\00:07:51.74 Well, you still, in your buccal mucosa, you absorb things 00:07:51.77\00:07:56.67 very fast into the bloodstream, 00:07:56.70\00:07:59.36 and actually, when you have tobacco - nicotine in there, 00:07:59.39\00:08:02.07 you absorb that stimulant in the bloodstream. 00:08:02.10\00:08:04.72 Also, in the absorption process, you also damage tissue 00:08:04.75\00:08:09.68 with carcinogens. 00:08:09.71\00:08:11.40 People that chew have a lot higher risk of having 00:08:11.43\00:08:15.05 head and neck cancer. 00:08:15.08\00:08:16.68 And this buccal mucosa is in the mouth... Yes where it's absorbed 00:08:16.71\00:08:19.67 Several baseball players through the years, 00:08:19.70\00:08:22.73 they used to chew and several of them have come up with 00:08:22.76\00:08:26.42 cancers because of this process. 00:08:26.45\00:08:29.67 So it's not good to chew either. 00:08:29.70\00:08:32.73 It's not good to smoke. 00:08:32.76\00:08:34.38 These are things that are both harmful to our health, 00:08:34.41\00:08:36.91 and we want to help both people to be able to stop these things. 00:08:36.94\00:08:40.43 Chronic pain is the next subject here. 00:08:40.46\00:08:42.26 "Can stopping smoking help with chronic pain?" 00:08:42.29\00:08:44.72 I guess the reverse of this is.. 00:08:44.75\00:08:46.43 "Does smoking create chronic pain somehow? 00:08:46.46\00:08:49.75 Well, I don't know if smoking creates pain. 00:08:49.78\00:08:52.76 It might cause internal pain, but smoking does contribute 00:08:52.79\00:08:56.91 to pain that you already have... OH, okay 00:08:56.94\00:08:59.50 Especially related to back pain. 00:08:59.53\00:09:02.95 What smoking does is not only does it take away your 00:09:02.98\00:09:05.90 oxygen - your oxygen from your tissues, 00:09:05.93\00:09:08.82 it takes away in healing powers that you have. 00:09:08.85\00:09:11.75 It also makes the disks unable to get a good blood supply. 00:09:11.78\00:09:15.95 When it doesn't get a good blood supply, that can cause pain. 00:09:15.98\00:09:19.70 So different things that are related to the cigarettes 00:09:19.73\00:09:21.97 that make pain a lot worse than it is... 00:09:22.00\00:09:25.06 Everyone claims, "Oh, the smoking, it helps relax me" 00:09:25.09\00:09:29.22 "It helps my nerves. " 00:09:29.25\00:09:30.93 And it seems to help with that, 00:09:30.96\00:09:32.82 but it definitely makes pain worse. 00:09:32.85\00:09:35.14 But there are other BETTER ways to help relaxing the nerves 00:09:35.17\00:09:38.77 other than smoking cigarettes. 00:09:38.80\00:09:40.39 All right, very good. 00:09:40.42\00:09:41.61 Well this final question we have here from our website... 00:09:41.64\00:09:45.78 "What are your thoughts on the Affordable Care Act, 00:09:45.81\00:09:48.66 the pros and cons.
