Yes 00:01:13.75\00:01:16.04 Years ago, we spent a lot of time and effort as a country 00:01:16.07\00:01:20.40 and as health carers talking about smoking 00:01:20.43\00:01:23.02 and it needed to be. 00:01:23.05\00:01:25.35 Smoking, if you think about it, just to review to let 00:01:25.38\00:01:27.86 everyone know it raises the chance of 00:01:27.89\00:01:29.82 cardiovascular disease including heart attacks, 00:01:29.85\00:01:32.72 raises the rates of stroke, raises the rates of 00:01:32.75\00:01:36.57 many types of cancer, raises the chance of aneurysms, 00:01:36.60\00:01:40.54 lots of problems associated with smoking... 00:01:40.57\00:01:42.80 not to mention lung disease, lots of problems with smoking. 00:01:42.83\00:01:48.15 Even though we really worked hard at this - still, 00:01:48.18\00:01:52.38 1 in 5 adults smokes, 1 in 5, 20%, 00:01:52.41\00:01:56.81 and this level is even higher in lower income houses, 00:01:56.84\00:02:01.05 those that aren't making as much money. 00:02:01.08\00:02:03.35 Now recently, Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar, 00:02:03.38\00:02:07.70 in an Associated Press article... 00:02:07.73\00:02:10.63 He wrote this article, Charles, he says, "Law may leave 00:02:10.66\00:02:13.86 smokers without insurance. 00:02:13.89\00:02:16.62 The "Affordable Care Act" will allow insurance to charge 00:02:16.65\00:02:20.76 some smokers a 50% higher premium beginning 00:02:20.79\00:02:25.54 in January 2014" So that's just some smokers. 00:02:25.57\00:02:30.13 "This could cost a 55-year-old nearly $4,200+ a year. " 00:02:30.16\00:02:35.18 Now, workers that are on the job could avoid the penalties 00:02:35.21\00:02:39.37 by joining smoking cessation programs, 00:02:39.40\00:02:42.35 and that's why we want to really talk about this today 00:02:42.38\00:02:45.38 because we could have a lot of people wanting to learn about 00:02:45.41\00:02:48.50 health having big financial implications, 00:02:48.53\00:02:52.07 and here, we have as a group, as people, a way to reach out 00:02:52.10\00:02:56.26 and help them quit smoking, 00:02:56.29\00:02:57.94 and also touch them doing it for the right reasons. 00:02:57.97\00:03:00.58 I don't think monetary reasons are necessarily the RIGHT 00:03:00.61\00:03:04.60 reasons MAKING someone do it, infringing on their freedoms, 00:03:04.63\00:03:08.62 but if this might help them see a greater truth, 00:03:08.66\00:03:10.44 this might be worth it. 00:03:10.47\00:03:11.73 So anyway, more and more people are going to come in... 00:03:11.76\00:03:14.94 Now these different plans operate under different rules 00:03:14.97\00:03:18.79 and what we're going to see, there's going to be available 00:03:18.82\00:03:21.06 tax credits available to low income brackets to help them 00:03:21.09\00:03:26.26 to quit smoking cigarettes. 00:03:26.29\00:03:28.35 Currently, right now, insurers are not allowed to charge 00:03:28.38\00:03:32.75 more for those who are overweight; 00:03:32.78\00:03:35.07 they're not allowed to charge more for those with 00:03:35.10\00:03:37.63 chronic pain, bad heart, but SMOKERS - WATCH OUT! 00:03:37.66\00:03:42.32 They're going to get charged for this. 00:03:42.35\00:03:43.87 Now don't get me wrong, I want everyone to have good health. 00:03:43.90\00:03:48.07 But I also believe that individual rights 00:03:48.10\00:03:51.06 as long as others are not being hurt, that's important too. 00:03:51.09\00:03:55.52 And, what about the health hazards 00:03:55.55\00:03:57.45 that we get from losing our freedoms? 00:03:57.48\00:03:59.62 What if someone starts telling us what to think? 00:03:59.65\00:04:02.14 Or what to believe? Where does it end? 00:04:02.17\00:04:03.96 I want people to quit smoking, but I want them to do this 00:04:03.99\00:04:08.36 because they CHOOSE the right path. 00:04:08.39\00:04:11.16 Living in fear of the government mandating 00:04:11.19\00:04:14.55 different things on us also creates a 00:04:14.58\00:04:17.43 health problem as well. 00:04:17.46\00:04:18.63 Remember those fear circuits get turned on, 00:04:18.66\00:04:21.20 and fear doesn't do a body any good. 00:04:21.23\00:04:24.05 So again, I suggest we love people and not judge. 00:04:24.08\00:04:27.34 Now, I'm going to put some important statistics on smoking 00:04:27.37\00:04:31.03 as we talk about this today. 00:04:31.06\00:04:35.31 Most people, do you even know 00:04:35.34\00:04:36.69 anyone that still smokes, Charles... 00:04:36.72\00:04:38.76 Unfortunately, I do. 00:04:38.79\00:04:41.33 Okay, you do, well, I'm glad that you do. 00:04:41.36\00:04:43.34 Most people nowadays don't even necessarily know people 00:04:43.37\00:04:47.54 that smoke because everyone sort of isolates themselves 00:04:47.57\00:04:50.42 into different socioeconomic groups based on cigarettes, 00:04:50.45\00:04:54.20 and in a way, if you think about reaching all the people we can 00:04:54.23\00:04:58.94 with good health message with the news about loving people 00:04:58.97\00:05:03.44 and loving them into health and loving them to a 00:05:03.47\00:05:05.84 relationship with the Creator, we have to reach ALL people. 00:05:05.87\00:05:09.54 ALL people, everywhere! 00:05:09.57\00:05:11.03 So we have to find ways to not only talk to people, 00:05:11.06\00:05:14.28 but to find ways to meet these. 00:05:14.31\00:05:15.92 One of these ways might be through a television program. 00:05:15.95\00:05:18.60 Hey, what you're saying here is we shouldn't discriminate 00:05:18.63\00:05:21.17 against people who smoke or people who have low 00:05:21.20\00:05:24.96 metabolism... it's sort of like a preexisting condition. 00:05:24.99\00:05:31.96 Well yeah and sometimes they choose these conditions, 00:05:31.99\00:05:35.59 but where do we draw it? 00:05:35.62\00:05:36.65 Do we say it's a mental health problem? 00:05:36.68\00:05:39.47 Or if they're born with this, where do we draw the line? 00:05:39.50\00:05:42.50 And I try to think of, well, how would Christ 00:05:42.53\00:05:44.65 approach this, you know, the Ultimate Physician. 00:05:44.68\00:05:47.26 He would find a way to reach these people, 00:05:47.29\00:05:49.36 to love these people and it might be through a simple 00:05:49.39\00:05:52.12 television program; 00:05:52.15\00:05:53.53 it might be through a 5-day plan; 00:05:53.56\00:05:56.05 it might be through opening up programs where 00:05:56.08\00:05:58.13 people can come in; 00:05:58.16\00:05:59.31 it might be through an interactive program... 00:05:59.34\00:06:01.46 Now, it's hard to interact with smokers, I admit 00:06:01.49\00:06:03.73 because most nonsmokers don't want to hurt themselves 00:06:03.76\00:06:06.45 by interacting with them. 00:06:06.48\00:06:07.51 And this 5-day program you're talking about is a 00:06:07.54\00:06:10.10 tried and true program put on by the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:06:10.13\00:06:14.13 to help people stop smoking in 5 days. Yes 00:06:14.16\00:06:16.08 It's been around and there are "Breathe-Free Plans" 00:06:16.11\00:06:18.67 There are many other plans. 00:06:18.70\00:06:20.95 The bottom line is we're going to have a window 00:06:20.98\00:06:23.23 to reach 1 in 5 people that really need to be helped, 00:06:23.26\00:06:28.46 how do we say who needs more health help... 00:06:28.49\00:06:30.91 Someone that carries extra weight; 00:06:30.94\00:06:33.02 someone that has a high blood pressure problem; 00:06:33.05\00:06:35.28 someone that has this problem or that problem... 00:06:35.31\00:06:37.56 Well, a lot of people are going to have this problem, 00:06:37.59\00:06:39.76 and they need help and they need people to 00:06:39.79\00:06:42.40 love them and not judge them 00:06:42.43\00:06:44.28 and help them along that path. 00:06:44.31\00:06:46.08 So you're saying that this extra financial burden is 00:06:46.11\00:06:48.40 a JUDGEMENT on them. 00:06:48.43\00:06:50.28 I think so - no one else is getting that. 00:06:50.31\00:06:52.63 And how would you feel, Charles, if next year, 00:06:52.66\00:06:55.64 they said, "Well, you know, I don't like the way 00:06:55.67\00:06:58.43 Charles Mills rests! I don't think he rests 00:06:58.46\00:07:01.88 the way we like it or I don't think the way he thinks, 00:07:01.91\00:07:04.31 I like that" - where does it end? 00:07:04.34\00:07:06.98 You know, where does that end? 00:07:07.01\00:07:08.18 Or, he carries extra weight or he doesn't eat this or that. 00:07:08.21\00:07:11.90 Not that I'm condoning certain things, 00:07:11.93\00:07:14.66 but I also think freedom is very important. 00:07:14.69\00:07:17.31 In fact, if you look in the Bible, 00:07:17.34\00:07:19.64 God works on the love of liberty and letting His people choose, 00:07:19.67\00:07:23.57 even when they're not good choices. 00:07:23.60\00:07:25.95 But He wants to love us and help us make good choices 00:07:25.98\00:07:29.19 and give us the power to make good choices, 00:07:29.22\00:07:31.36 not DEMAND that we make good choices. 00:07:31.39\00:07:33.52 At least the government is making allowance 00:07:33.55\00:07:36.59 for someone who does smoke to take a program 00:07:36.62\00:07:39.76 and it's paid for by the government, is that right? 00:07:39.79\00:07:42.42 Well, some people can... if they have an employer 00:07:42.45\00:07:46.13 that will do that - yes. 00:07:46.16\00:07:47.29 So certain low income groups do have that plan intact. 00:07:47.32\00:07:51.54 But there are some good things, there are some dangerous 00:07:51.57\00:07:54.73 things I see out there, but we have to, 00:07:54.76\00:07:56.97 no matter what's out there, we have to sort of say, 00:07:57.00\00:07:59.28 "Well, how can we help the world with this?" 00:07:59.31\00:08:01.89 And the first place... What an opportunity this is... 00:08:01.92\00:08:04.36 Yes it is, but still it shocks me that still 1 in 20 people 00:08:04.39\00:08:09.07 today still smoke cigarettes. 00:08:09.10\00:08:12.19 ...1 in 20, is that the right 00:08:12.22\00:08:14.05 What did I say, did I say that? 00:08:14.08\00:08:17.15 1 in 5... 20% - that's a large number of people! 00:08:17.18\00:08:23.14 Lots of people we still can reach. 00:08:23.17\00:08:24.75 A lot of heart attacks, strokes, cancers, lung disease, 00:08:24.78\00:08:29.90 we can help lower those risks. 00:08:29.93\00:08:31.42 And so the government comes along and says, 00:08:31.45\00:08:32.85 "Look, if you're going to be smoking, it's costing us 00:08:32.88\00:08:35.11 more money to TAKE CARE of you" 00:08:35.14\00:08:37.09 So I can sort of see why they're doing this, 00:08:37.12\00:08:39.52 but it is a form of discrimination because 00:08:39.55\00:08:42.14 obesity is going to cost them more money; 00:08:42.17\00:08:45.24 heart disease is going to cost them more money... 00:08:45.27\00:08:46.64 All these things - chronic pain, diabetes, 00:08:46.67\00:08:49.36 this is all going to cost more money, 00:08:49.39\00:08:50.83 all of them are preventable. 00:08:50.86\00:08:52.25 Where do you draw the line? 00:08:52.28\00:08:53.32 Exactly! Where do you draw the line, 00:08:53.35\00:08:54.80 so that's an issue but now that this issue is here, 00:08:54.83\00:08:57.50 we need to sort of use this as an opportunity 00:08:57.53\00:09:00.54 to find out ways we can meet people that are smoking, 00:09:00.57\00:09:04.83 and it's hard because people that don't smoke are the ones 00:09:04.86\00:09:09.50 that should be talking to these people, 00:09:09.53\00:09:11.79 and yet we don't like to get down there because 00:09:11.82\00:09:14.48 we get the secondhand smoke and we get the same risk they do. 00:09:14.51\00:09:17.77 We don't like to eat at the same restaurants 00:09:17.80\00:09:19.66 or go to the same places, we don't even sit in the 00:09:19.69\00:09:22.23 same places... We separate ourselves from them. Exactly! 00:09:22.26\00:09:24.36 They've almost isolated themselves. 00:09:24.39\00:09:26.05 They're almost like lepers! Yeah! Yeah! 00:09:26.08\00:09:28.10 Almost like lepers! Yeah, true 00:09:28.13\00:09:29.88 So we have to find ways with programs, 00:09:29.91\00:09:33.11 with computer programs, with apps, 00:09:33.14\00:09:35.20 whatever way we can to reach these people, 00:09:35.23\00:09:38.37 and also say, "Listen come, leave off the cigarettes 00:09:38.40\00:09:41.39 just for a few hours, while we can talk to you 00:09:41.42\00:09:43.48 because we're not comfortable taking that... " 00:09:43.51\00:09:45.77 ...that extra cigarette toxin into our lives. " 00:09:45.80\00:09:49.68 Well now we have to educate smokers also that there is 00:09:49.71\00:09:52.60 help available, but please, when you come and take this 00:09:52.63\00:09:55.43 help, respect our desire not to have that environment around us. 00:09:55.46\00:09:59.55 We can help you, but please don't bring that environment 00:09:59.58\00:10:01.96 into our lives by blowing in our faces 00:10:01.99\00:10:04.03 or being around us while your smoking. 00:10:04.06\00:10:05.39 Right, and this is going to open up a whole new realm... 00:10:05.42\00:10:10.65 It's according to how we treat these people as they do it. 00:10:10.68\00:10:13.51 You know, we've got to love them and really work with them 00:10:13.54\00:10:16.03 and realizing this is the most addictive substance out there... 00:10:16.06\00:10:19.66 And in starting with it, the first thing I would start 00:10:19.69\00:10:22.58 with in helping someone quit smoking would be education. 00:10:22.61\00:10:26.72 And I'm going to throw out some statistics there that will just 00:10:26.75\00:10:29.42 blow people away! 00:10:29.45\00:10:30.79 I haven't talked about these in years because we haven't talked 00:10:30.82\00:10:33.07 about smoking for years. 00:10:33.10\00:10:34.53 It used to be there were programs all over, 00:10:34.56\00:10:36.46 we were always talking about smoking. 00:10:36.49\00:10:39.39 ...20 minutes after a smoker quits smoking, 00:10:39.42\00:10:43.29 the blood pressure and heart rate start to go down. 00:10:43.32\00:10:46.77 Smoking is a stimulant, a stressor that we've talked about 00:10:46.80\00:10:50.50 ...20 minutes - lower your blood pressure, lower the heart rate. 00:10:50.53\00:10:53.84 ...8 hours after a smoker quits, the carbon monoxide, 00:10:53.87\00:10:59.97 that's the part that binds to oxygen, decreases and you 00:11:00.00\00:11:03.42 start getting oxygen throughout all of your tissues again. 00:11:03.45\00:11:06.85 That's pretty exciting! 00:11:06.88\00:11:08.11 ...24 hours after a smoker quits, 00:11:08.14\00:11:11.84 the risk of myocardial infarction starts to decrease. 00:11:11.87\00:11:15.35 24 hours - you start lowering the risk. 00:11:15.38\00:11:17.51 ...48 hours after a smoker quits, 00:11:17.54\00:11:20.58 2 days, the nerve endings start to improve, 00:11:20.61\00:11:24.33 and your taste starts to get better, the nerves, 00:11:24.36\00:11:27.66 the cigarettes affects all that, the different chemicals 00:11:27.69\00:11:30.29 in the cigarettes. 00:11:30.32\00:11:31.66 Two or 3 months after a smoker quit, the chronic cough 00:11:31.69\00:11:36.15 goes away, the cilia start to move better, 00:11:36.18\00:11:39.04 get all that stuff out of there. 00:11:39.07\00:11:40.93 In one year after quitting cigarettes, 00:11:40.96\00:11:44.36 the risk of a myocardial infarction, a heart attack, 00:11:44.39\00:11:47.64 decreases by 50% 00:11:47.67\00:11:51.78 So if you take 10 people, half of them quit smoking, 00:11:51.81\00:11:55.02 they can lower their risk of heart attack by 50% 00:11:55.05\00:11:58.29 That is pretty great health benefits from not smoking. 00:11:58.32\00:12:02.25 So the first thing I want to encourage people 00:12:02.28\00:12:04.66 as when we're reaching with smokers, 00:12:04.69\00:12:06.38 if you have to be a smoker, the first step would be to 00:12:06.41\00:12:09.12 educate yourself. 00:12:09.15\00:12:10.39 We're going to need to make some changes. 00:12:10.42\00:12:12.33 Educate yourself about what smoking does, 00:12:12.36\00:12:14.95 and later on in this program, we're going to talk about 00:12:14.98\00:12:17.22 some plans or things that we can do to share with you 00:12:17.25\00:12:20.26 that might help you not only quit smoking yourself, 00:12:20.29\00:12:23.27 but maybe talk to your friend or neighbor 00:12:23.30\00:12:25.20 in how to approach them to help them as well. 00:12:25.23\00:12:27.67 One of the first questions that we're going to be 00:12:27.70\00:12:29.32 talking about on the other side of the break here 00:12:29.35\00:12:31.11 that has come into heartwiseministries. org 00:12:31.14\00:12:33.29 is electronic cigarettes. 00:12:33.32\00:12:35.50 This is a big thing, they are everywhere. 00:12:35.53\00:12:37.65 Are they unanswered? 00:12:37.68\00:12:39.29 Does that take care of the problem? 00:12:39.32\00:12:40.70 We'll discover the answer to that question and many more 00:12:40.73\00:12:43.52 on this topic of cigarettes on our return, 00:12:43.55\00:12:45.85 so everybody stay RIGHT where you are. 00:12:45.89\00:12:48.19
