When was the last time you saw a commercial 00:00:17.32\00:00:19.33 heralding the benefits of water? 00:00:19.36\00:00:22.08 Nobody says, "WATER, it does a body good" 00:00:22.11\00:00:25.69 Well, that's about to change, stay tuned... 00:00:25.72\00:00:30.90 I'm Dr. James Marcum 00:00:30.93\00:00:32.73 Are you interested in discovering the reason why? 00:00:32.76\00:00:35.98 Do you want solutions to your healthcare problems? 00:00:36.01\00:00:39.06 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:00:39.09\00:00:41.77 Well, you're about to be given the "Ultimate Prescription" 00:00:41.80\00:00:48.18 You've been going all day in the hot sun. 00:00:48.21\00:00:50.94 You're tired and thirsty, so you reach for a cold one. 00:00:50.97\00:00:54.23 You get a fruit juice or a cola or lemonade. 00:00:54.26\00:00:56.92 You drink it down... Ahhh, that's more like it! 00:00:56.95\00:01:00.48 Not so tired anymore, but guess what? 00:01:00.51\00:01:02.53 You're still thirsty, maybe even DANGEROUSLY 00:01:02.56\00:01:06.28 thirsty and you just don't know it. 00:01:06.31\00:01:08.45 What happens next can be downright deadly. 00:01:08.48\00:01:12.07 Dr. Marcum, what do we need to know about 00:01:12.10\00:01:14.38 good old-fashioned, plain, normal, boring WATER? 00:01:14.41\00:01:18.80 You know, Charles, I wouldn't say water is boring. 00:01:18.83\00:01:22.35 In fact, we're dedicating yet another program 00:01:22.38\00:01:25.14 to talk about the importance of water... Amen! 00:01:25.17\00:01:27.12 THAT is how important it is... Yes, yes 00:01:27.15\00:01:29.47 Let me just stress a few things for you today. 00:01:29.50\00:01:31.99 I'm getting fired up, I can tell. 00:01:32.02\00:01:33.95 .. 70% of our body is water. 00:01:33.98\00:01:36.47 Every chemical reaction in our body depends on water. 00:01:36.50\00:01:39.89 How we think depends on water. 00:01:39.92\00:01:42.02 The thickness of the blood depends on water. 00:01:42.05\00:01:44.48 Whether we're tired or not depends on water. 00:01:44.51\00:01:47.15 And the list - the kidney function depends on water. 00:01:47.18\00:01:49.73 EVERYTHING depends on water! 00:01:49.76\00:01:51.65 Now, I was thinking the other day, 00:01:51.68\00:01:53.80 and I guess I shouldn't think like this, Charles, 00:01:53.83\00:01:55.73 and I'll share it with our viewers out there today. 00:01:55.76\00:01:59.28 How much do we really do good in medicine, 00:01:59.31\00:02:02.21 when you think about it. 00:02:02.24\00:02:03.30 You know, that's a very reflective thought. 00:02:03.33\00:02:05.48 I've been practicing for quite a few years now. 00:02:05.51\00:02:09.15 Let's think about that... 00:02:09.18\00:02:10.83 Infections - You know, we've helped a lot with infections 00:02:10.86\00:02:13.92 through the years, but at the same time, 00:02:13.95\00:02:15.97 we help some infections, but then we started overusing 00:02:16.00\00:02:18.97 antibiotics and now we have super-infections. 00:02:19.00\00:02:21.38 So maybe... I don't know about that. 00:02:21.41\00:02:22.98 Anesthesia - Well that's a great thing because 00:02:23.01\00:02:25.64 before people could be put to sleep, they would have all 00:02:25.67\00:02:29.12 sorts of bad things inside that we couldn't fix. 00:02:29.15\00:02:31.64 So I think surgery is good to fix things that are 00:02:31.67\00:02:34.18 broken inside, to take out a bad gallbladder. 00:02:34.21\00:02:36.78 I think surgery is a good thing to do. 00:02:36.81\00:02:38.70 And then heart disease - of course, pacemakers. 00:02:38.73\00:02:42.05 Before that, the heart would stop and if you're having a 00:02:42.08\00:02:44.48 heart attack, we can help with that... 00:02:44.51\00:02:46.38 But many of the things that are trendy to talk about now 00:02:46.41\00:02:49.77 are things that have technology-based. 00:02:49.80\00:02:53.58 I'M going to make today, WATER, 00:02:53.61\00:02:55.78 something TRENDY to talk about, Charles. 00:02:55.81\00:02:58.21 We're going to be SO excited about water 00:02:58.24\00:03:00.80 that we're going to tell the whole world that water 00:03:00.83\00:03:03.44 it does a body GOOD! Yes 00:03:03.47\00:03:05.43 There are going to be commercials everywhere with 00:03:05.46\00:03:07.97 people drinking water saying how good it is to have that! 00:03:08.00\00:03:12.29 NOW IF THEY DID THAT, if we were able to make a 00:03:12.32\00:03:13.53 commercial and 5 million people watching this show decided 00:03:13.56\00:03:17.36 that they're going to drink more water, 00:03:17.39\00:03:19.12 would it change your business at all - as a cardiologist? 00:03:19.15\00:03:21.63 Oh YEAH, YEAH - Remember all the stressors? 00:03:21.66\00:03:24.13 Lack of water is one of the stressors on the body. 00:03:24.16\00:03:27.21 Remember I said, it's a little bit of this stress, 00:03:27.24\00:03:29.48 a little bit of that stress... 00:03:29.51\00:03:30.54 Well when 7 out of 10 people now are dehydrated, guess what? 00:03:30.57\00:03:35.18 7 out of 10... 7 out of 10- that turns on the 00:03:35.21\00:03:38.58 stress chemistry again. 00:03:38.61\00:03:39.71 So if we add up all these chronic things that we could do, 00:03:39.74\00:03:42.82 all these stressors, we could turn down those dramatically 00:03:42.85\00:03:45.56 just by drinking enough water. 00:03:45.59\00:03:46.93 Water helps thin out the blood. 00:03:46.96\00:03:48.87 Water helps lubricate the joints. 00:03:48.90\00:03:52.44 Water helps prevent Alzheimer disease. 00:03:52.47\00:03:55.33 Water helps metabolize those medicines you are taking. 00:03:55.36\00:03:58.61 One of the most scary things, occasionally, Charles, 00:03:58.64\00:04:00.98 we see people that don't drink water, 00:04:01.01\00:04:02.93 and yet they take a fluid pill. 00:04:02.96\00:04:04.59 Then they get dehydrated, then all of a sudden, 00:04:04.62\00:04:08.01 their little dose of a 5 mg of a blood sugar pill, 00:04:08.04\00:04:11.57 equivalently becomes 50 and their blood sugar 00:04:11.60\00:04:14.84 drops and they get in trouble. 00:04:14.87\00:04:16.17 You tell a story like this of a lady 00:04:16.20\00:04:18.19 in a nursing home, would you share that story with us, 00:04:18.22\00:04:20.91 that's an important story. 00:04:20.94\00:04:22.42 Yes, I had a lady that I took care of one time, 00:04:22.46\00:04:24.16 she was in a nursing home and she came to the hospital 00:04:24.19\00:04:27.59 in kidney failure and her blood sugar was virtually nothing. 00:04:27.62\00:04:32.57 And, everyone said, "What kind 00:04:32.60\00:04:35.12 of strange disease might she have?" 00:04:35.15\00:04:37.68 Well what had happened was, she had gotten sick 00:04:37.71\00:04:40.04 at her stomach and wasn't eating or drinking for a few days, 00:04:40.07\00:04:43.52 and yet still taking in the fluid pill. 00:04:43.55\00:04:47.78 A prescribed fluid pill... Yes, the fluid pill dehydrated her, 00:04:47.81\00:04:51.42 and in the process of dehydrating her, 00:04:51.45\00:04:53.97 it made her kidney functions get worse. 00:04:54.00\00:04:57.72 She was also taking a blood sugar pill, 00:04:57.75\00:04:59.71 so now the blood sugar pill couldn't get metabolized, 00:04:59.74\00:05:02.32 it built up in the body. 00:05:02.35\00:05:03.78 So the blood sugar was chronically low; 00:05:03.81\00:05:06.02 she was nearly in a coma when she came in - 00:05:06.05\00:05:08.83 all because of this terrible dehydration that occurred 00:05:08.86\00:05:12.16 because of this process. 00:05:12.19\00:05:14.27 So, this is very important - what got my mind on it 00:05:14.30\00:05:18.97 this summer is I wrote a blog, that's on our 00:05:19.00\00:05:21.25 heartwiseministries. org website 00:05:21.28\00:05:23.80 where they can ask our questions and this came from 00:05:23.83\00:05:26.35 George Washington University in the D.C area. 00:05:26.38\00:05:30.01 And they were noticing that they had an increased number 00:05:30.04\00:05:33.11 of patients that came for hyperthermia - high temperatures 00:05:33.14\00:05:38.73 Well why was that? 00:05:38.76\00:05:40.23 Well people start not drinking enough water... 00:05:40.26\00:05:43.30 Water is used to regulate temperature; 00:05:43.33\00:05:45.59 all of a sudden the temperature goes up and guess what? 00:05:45.62\00:05:48.81 You can die from high temperature... Wow! 00:05:48.84\00:05:52.61 A few years ago, I took care of this guy, 00:05:52.64\00:05:55.53 and he was riding a bicycle. 00:05:55.56\00:05:58.17 Now he had some mental health illnesses, unfortunately, 00:05:58.20\00:06:01.00 but he rode a bicycle 40 miles in 100 degree weather 00:06:01.03\00:06:06.06 in the summer and he didn't have any water with him 00:06:06.09\00:06:09.84 on his whole trip. 00:06:09.87\00:06:11.42 Needless to say, about 30 miles into the trip, he collapsed. 00:06:11.45\00:06:15.48 They brought him into the hospital, 00:06:15.51\00:06:17.51 he was severely hyperthermic, temperature was real high 00:06:17.54\00:06:21.07 because he didn't have water to regulate his temperature. 00:06:21.10\00:06:24.39 The temperature was not regulated correctly; 00:06:24.42\00:06:27.28 the kidneys went into failure; 00:06:27.31\00:06:28.91 his muscles began to break down, a medical condition called 00:06:28.94\00:06:33.19 "rhabdomyolysis" where the muscles break down. 00:06:33.22\00:06:36.13 It was just a terrible thing. 00:06:36.16\00:06:38.56 He ended up going into multiorgan system failure 00:06:38.59\00:06:42.09 because of the high temperature, because of the lack of water, 00:06:42.12\00:06:44.97 and all of this was just because he did not drink enough water. 00:06:45.00\00:06:48.88 Now this was a dramatic example, 00:06:48.91\00:06:51.21 but what are each one of us doing each day 00:06:51.24\00:06:54.34 when we don't put enough water into our own bodies. 00:06:54.37\00:06:58.49 So a lot of things can happen. 00:06:58.52\00:07:00.85 The first thing people are going to say, Dr. Marcum, is 00:07:00.88\00:07:03.36 "Well, I drink all the time, I have my fruit juice here, 00:07:03.39\00:07:06.20 I have my colas here, I drink my tea and my coffee" 00:07:06.23\00:07:08.98 "Why should I have a problem with water 00:07:09.01\00:07:11.09 when I'm drinking all of this liquid" 00:07:11.12\00:07:12.67 Is there a difference between liquid and water? 00:07:12.70\00:07:16.52 Water is liquid but are liquids that are 00:07:16.55\00:07:18.19 not equal to the water? Yeah! Absolutely! 00:07:18.22\00:07:20.41 I have people that come and say, "I drink plenty; 00:07:20.44\00:07:23.15 I drink my coffee and my iced tea and my beer 00:07:23.18\00:07:26.69 and my Coca-Cola and everything. " 00:07:26.72\00:07:28.49 And there's water in those things, right? 00:07:28.53\00:07:30.75 Well, it's not the same way and it ends up actually... 00:07:30.78\00:07:34.82 some of those - it doesn't get in the bloodstream very quick. 00:07:34.85\00:07:39.25 Some of it could cause us to be dehydrated, 00:07:39.28\00:07:41.65 especially if it has caffeine in it. 00:07:41.68\00:07:43.62 Of course, it has all those chemicals. 00:07:43.65\00:07:45.57 When a person comes to the hospital, 00:07:45.60\00:07:48.13 and they're in bad shape, the first thing we do is 00:07:48.16\00:07:50.76 put oxygen on them usually, and then we start an IV 00:07:50.79\00:07:54.32 Well, what are we putting in that IV? 00:07:54.35\00:07:56.41 Are we putting 1/2 caramel color and caffeine, 00:07:56.44\00:07:59.67 and lots of sugar coloring? 00:07:59.70\00:08:01.32 NO, we're putting 1/2 normal saline or normal saline; 00:08:01.35\00:08:05.56 we're trying to match the chemistry of the blood 00:08:05.59\00:08:08.46 to sort of rehydrate the system. 00:08:08.49\00:08:10.49 Because what happens when we have hydration - 00:08:10.52\00:08:13.59 every cell in our body depends on water to run its machinery, 00:08:13.62\00:08:17.41 and as soon as that's disrupted, 00:08:17.44\00:08:19.45 everything is disrupted. 00:08:19.48\00:08:21.11 And then when that's disrupted, STRESS is put on the system 00:08:21.14\00:08:24.08 and it just makes things worse. 00:08:24.11\00:08:25.59 Spiral begins right there... Right, again, the spiral 00:08:25.62\00:08:27.67 starts right away, it's gets bad and bad. 00:08:27.70\00:08:30.46 Now if you think about it, we've talked about 00:08:30.49\00:08:32.28 the terrible examples, the people that ride across 00:08:32.31\00:08:35.15 the miles, the person in the nursing home that got sick, 00:08:35.18\00:08:38.55 but I also have more subtle examples of dehydration. 00:08:38.58\00:08:42.66 I had a lady that came in not too long ago 00:08:42.69\00:08:44.93 to the emergency room that kept having her heart go fast. 00:08:44.96\00:08:47.81 She had the skip all the time, it was just SKIP, 00:08:47.84\00:08:50.09 it would go fast, it would go fast! 00:08:50.12\00:08:51.84 So my approach, she was fairly young and I said, 00:08:51.87\00:08:54.78 "Have you ever had this skipping feeling ever before?" 00:08:54.81\00:08:57.95 And she says, "No, I haven't had a skip" 00:08:57.98\00:09:00.56 So I said, "Well, the skip is due to some type of 00:09:00.59\00:09:03.05 stressor on the system" 00:09:03.08\00:09:04.51 "Now it can certainly come from the heart, 00:09:04.54\00:09:06.33 but it could come from other things" 00:09:06.36\00:09:07.51 "Let's look at the stressors" 00:09:07.54\00:09:09.48 I said, "Are you in pain?" "No, I'm not in pain" 00:09:09.51\00:09:12.12 I go, "Did you sleep enough last night?" 00:09:12.15\00:09:14.09 "Oh I slept fine last night" 00:09:14.12\00:09:15.69 "Did you have any toxins, you know, did you have some drugs?" 00:09:15.72\00:09:19.08 Some people do drugs and that makes their heart skip, 00:09:19.11\00:09:21.54 especially one called, "methamphetamines and cocaine," 00:09:21.57\00:09:24.76 that skips the heart up quite a bit in the practice that I see 00:09:24.79\00:09:27.76 I bump into them. "No, I haven't done that" 00:09:27.79\00:09:30.08 So, in talking to her, finally comes down to, 00:09:30.11\00:09:32.61 she was just not drinking enough water, 00:09:32.64\00:09:35.00 and when she was not drinking enough water, 00:09:35.03\00:09:37.42 it made her adrenalin level go higher. 00:09:37.45\00:09:39.96 Adrenalin caused her heart to skip more. 00:09:39.99\00:09:43.87 We had a liter of fluid in her, as soon as she got hydrated, 00:09:43.90\00:09:47.73 the skips went entirely away. 00:09:47.76\00:09:49.90 And that was a direct example of how not having enough water 00:09:49.93\00:09:53.96 in HER, made adrenalin go up and of course, 00:09:53.99\00:09:56.74 fear because she was scared because something 00:09:56.77\00:09:58.60 was going wrong, so that even made it worse, 00:09:58.63\00:10:01.09 and then as soon as she figured out what caused the stressor, 00:10:01.12\00:10:04.38 got her own self under control, the skips went entirely away. 00:10:04.41\00:10:08.37 Now, it takes time to figure these things out. 00:10:08.40\00:10:11.95 so this was a lesser example, but how many of us, 00:10:11.98\00:10:14.83 evidently 7 in 10 of us, have some type of chemical 00:10:14.86\00:10:18.23 reaction that's occurring in our body maybe because 00:10:18.26\00:10:21.24 we don't have enough water? 00:10:21.27\00:10:23.22 Could it be contributing to mental health illnesses? 00:10:23.25\00:10:26.32 Absolutely! 00:10:26.35\00:10:27.39 Could it be contributing to joint pain? YES! 00:10:27.42\00:10:31.27 Thick blood? YES 00:10:31.30\00:10:33.15 Blood pressure problems? YES 00:10:33.18\00:10:35.08 That would be the thick blood, blood pressure. Yes 00:10:35.11\00:10:36.76 Well, foot problems? Yes 00:10:36.79\00:10:39.74 But when every chemical in the body - 00:10:39.77\00:10:41.73 kidney problems - when every organ needs it, 00:10:41.76\00:10:44.54 it only makes sense that water is so ESSENTIAL. 00:10:44.57\00:10:48.42 WATER - it does a body good! 00:10:48.45\00:10:50.85 I don't think we can talk enough about it because 00:10:50.88\00:10:53.24 when people leave here today, I want them to know 00:10:53.27\00:10:55.84 that I have to pay attention to how much water 00:10:55.87\00:10:58.28 I'm putting in myself every day. 00:10:58.31\00:11:00.19 All right, let's talk about this... 00:11:00.22\00:11:01.65 The viewer is watching us as well... 00:11:01.68\00:11:04.79 "How do I know that I'm drinking enough water?" 00:11:04.82\00:11:07.89 "Are there tests I can do myself to indicate that I am dehydrated 00:11:07.92\00:11:11.96 before I go crazy?" 00:11:11.99\00:11:13.25 Yeah, there is and here are the 2 easiest things to do... 00:11:13.28\00:11:16.94 If you want to do it fancy, you can take your urine 00:11:16.97\00:11:19.67 and they can measure something called the "specific gravity" 00:11:19.70\00:11:22.94 where they tell how thick or thin it is. 00:11:22.97\00:11:25.80 If you want to do it simply, you can look at it... 00:11:25.83\00:11:27.88 "Is my urine clear?" 00:11:27.91\00:11:29.72 Another general guideline is - take your weight, 00:11:29.75\00:11:32.56 divide it in 2 and that's about how many ounces you need a day. 00:11:32.59\00:11:36.94 Now if you're more active, you even need more. 00:11:36.97\00:11:39.64 Now if you're a sickly person or have other medical problems, 00:11:39.67\00:11:42.97 that might be different. 00:11:43.00\00:11:44.38 So for instance, let's say you weigh 180 pounds, 00:11:44.41\00:11:47.03 you need about 90 ounces of water a day. 00:11:47.06\00:11:50.10 So that's just a general guideline or until your 00:11:50.13\00:11:52.64 urine clears up. 00:11:52.67\00:11:54.75 I tell people, don't try to drink big at night 00:11:54.78\00:11:57.65 or it disrupts your sleep pattern. 00:11:57.68\00:12:00.16 The first thing I do is I get up in the morning, 00:12:00.19\00:12:01.90 I drink a glass of water. 00:12:01.93\00:12:03.61 I brush my teeth, I drink another glass of water. 00:12:03.64\00:12:06.11 Before each meal, I drink a glass of water. 00:12:06.14\00:12:08.24 So I try to get it down up front. 00:12:08.27\00:12:10.14 Now you might be going to the bathroom a little bit quicker, 00:12:10.17\00:12:12.72 but all the cells have the needed substances 00:12:12.75\00:12:15.79 at the very beginning of the day. 00:12:15.82\00:12:17.34 So a great way to start the day is drinking enough water. 00:12:17.37\00:12:20.52 Now, you mentioned, let's go back to the urine 00:12:20.55\00:12:23.33 just for a moment there because I've heard other 00:12:23.36\00:12:25.17 professionals talk about how important it is 00:12:25.20\00:12:26.96 that we examine this. 00:12:26.99\00:12:28.16 As-a-matter-of-fact, in Australia, if you go into the 00:12:28.19\00:12:30.38 bathrooms in Australia, right above the urinal, 00:12:30.41\00:12:32.90 there is a chart - Yes and it has different colors 00:12:32.93\00:12:36.49 there and it says - If your urine is like this, 00:12:36.52\00:12:38.54 then you need to do this; if it's like this... 00:12:38.57\00:12:40.05 And as it got more cloudy or as it got more yellow, 00:12:40.08\00:12:44.83 then that's the problem we're having. 00:12:44.86\00:12:46.55 We need to have it as clear as possible. 00:12:46.58\00:12:48.84 What is happening exactly? 00:12:48.87\00:12:51.12 Why does the urine, when you're not drinking enough water, 00:12:51.15\00:12:53.27 become more yellowish or more cloudy? 00:12:53.30\00:12:55.14 It's because your body holds onto the water. 00:12:55.17\00:12:57.68 It concentrates it... Okay, so urine is 00:12:57.71\00:12:59.99 water plus other things. 00:13:00.02\00:13:01.34 Yes, you're holding onto as much as you can get. 00:13:01.37\00:13:03.93 Oh, I gotcha... You know, your cells need 00:13:03.96\00:13:05.28 every bit that you get, so you're not 00:13:05.31\00:13:08.68 losing any in the urine. 00:13:08.72\00:13:09.98 But if you have clear urine, that means your cells are happy 00:13:10.02\00:13:13.15 More than enough water! Okay... 00:13:13.18\00:13:14.79 All the cells have what they need, 00:13:14.82\00:13:16.36 it's just very, very important. 00:13:16.39\00:13:17.74 And people are going to say, "You know, I drink my coke, 00:13:17.77\00:13:20.64 and I drink my tea, but that does NOT do 00:13:20.67\00:13:22.46 what water does - is your message. 00:13:22.49\00:13:23.64 No, it doesn't - it does not move the way... 00:13:23.67\00:13:25.62 God made us 70% water, not 70% of these other drinks. 00:13:25.65\00:13:30.09 Okay, so we need - we NEED half of our weight 00:13:30.12\00:13:33.38 in WATER ounces... WATER, other liquids don't do it 00:13:33.41\00:13:37.24 We have some questions coming up in the 00:13:37.27\00:13:38.85 heartwiseministries. org website 00:13:38.88\00:13:40.76 We invite you to leave your questions there for us 00:13:40.79\00:13:42.55 on this program and we'll get to those on our return, 00:13:42.58\00:13:45.09 so stay there! 00:13:45.12\00:13:47.03
