That certainly is! 00:00:34.34\00:00:37.23 That's a lot of serotonin problems. 00:00:37.26\00:00:39.02 That's a lot of bone problems. 00:00:39.05\00:00:40.83 That's a lot of vascular problems. 00:00:40.86\00:00:43.49 That's a big issue! 00:00:43.52\00:00:45.56 So I think that if you're out there today, 00:00:45.59\00:00:48.53 and you want to take care of your family... 00:00:48.56\00:00:49.98 You know, say, "Listen, let's go to the beach" 00:00:50.01\00:00:52.08 or at least "Let's start taking a vitamin D supplement" 00:00:52.11\00:00:56.03 Let's look at our levels and make sure it is good enough 00:00:56.06\00:00:58.71 because we want to have that good. 00:00:58.74\00:01:00.79 Whether everyone should take it depends on 00:01:00.82\00:01:02.83 how much vitamin D you're getting in your diet; 00:01:02.86\00:01:05.25 how much you're getting outside, 00:01:05.28\00:01:08.02 you certainly could have it measured in a doctor's office. 00:01:08.05\00:01:12.07 And here are some numbers that might be interesting to people. 00:01:12.10\00:01:16.43 We can measure vitamin D in a blood test, 00:01:16.46\00:01:19.64 and the target level is about 20 nanograms per milliliter. 00:01:19.67\00:01:26.42 Now that's not very much and "The Institute of Medicine" 00:01:26.45\00:01:30.64 recommends that if you're less than 70 years old, 00:01:30.67\00:01:33.26 Charles, that would be you... Thank you 00:01:33.29\00:01:35.06 and have not had their level tested before, 00:01:35.09\00:01:39.10 you need to use about 600 international units a day 00:01:39.13\00:01:43.89 of vitamin D3 and you can look 00:01:43.92\00:01:46.96 at that in the store as vitamin D3 00:01:46.99\00:01:49.16 Now if you're greater than 70, you need about 800 IU 00:01:49.19\00:01:54.71 of vitamin D a day. 00:01:54.74\00:01:55.77 Now, are they assuming that the older you are, 00:01:55.80\00:01:57.84 the less you're outside... is that why it going down? 00:01:57.87\00:01:59.77 Less outside and the less you have in your body. Okay 00:01:59.80\00:02:02.53 It seems to be more deficient the older you get. All right 00:02:02.56\00:02:04.62 BUT, if you're deficient, you can certainly measure 00:02:04.65\00:02:07.07 it in a blood level and supplement - get extra. 00:02:07.10\00:02:10.66 In fact, in my practice, if I think people are deficient, 00:02:10.69\00:02:14.13 it's important to me for a couple of reasons. 00:02:14.16\00:02:16.37 One, is blood pressure. 00:02:16.40\00:02:18.58 I want the blood pressure to lower, 00:02:18.61\00:02:20.98 and I can lower the blood pressure by giving vitamin D 00:02:21.01\00:02:24.53 I can also lower the chance of someone having a bone fracture. 00:02:24.56\00:02:27.98 You know, we make so much big deal about these 00:02:28.01\00:02:30.45 bone supplements, but the simple things like walking, 00:02:30.48\00:02:33.64 and vitamin D which can help make the bones stronger - 00:02:33.67\00:02:36.51 we don't even talk about this! 00:02:36.54\00:02:38.26 Because remember, vitamin D deficiency, calcitonin comes up, 00:02:38.29\00:02:42.32 they try to steal calcium from somewhere. 00:02:42.35\00:02:44.59 They steal it from the wrong places - the bones and the cells 00:02:44.62\00:02:47.70 If the cells are getting calcium stolen from it because 00:02:47.73\00:02:52.10 there's not enough vitamin D... The cells in the bones, you mean 00:02:52.14\00:02:54.30 Well, cells in the bones and cells in the body. 00:02:54.34\00:02:55.79 All the cells in the body have calcium. Yes 00:02:55.82\00:02:58.14 Vitamin D is involved with calcium. 00:02:58.17\00:03:00.62 So if the vitamin D is not around, 00:03:00.65\00:03:02.28 you don't have enough calcium, 00:03:02.31\00:03:03.58 calcium is pulled out of the bones - bone fractures! 00:03:03.61\00:03:06.73 Pulled out of muscles - muscle aches... 00:03:06.76\00:03:09.62 Aches and pains - serotonin. 00:03:09.65\00:03:11.80 So lots of different things can happen. 00:03:11.83\00:03:13.95 So, yes, people need to take supplements in the wintertime. 00:03:13.98\00:03:17.93 I admit, I don't get out enough and I take 00:03:17.96\00:03:20.82 vitamin D3 in the wintertime and it makes me feel better. 00:03:20.85\00:03:24.47 It helps my moods out, helps me out until 00:03:24.50\00:03:26.91 I start getting outside more. 00:03:26.94\00:03:28.69 So I take vitamin D3 myself and 00:03:28.72\00:03:31.17 it makes me feel a lot better. 00:03:31.20\00:03:32.44 I don't necessarily have my number, 00:03:32.47\00:03:34.25 but let's say a person comes in and they're measured, 00:03:34.28\00:03:36.81 and their number is low... 00:03:36.84\00:03:37.89 Then I will vigorously supplement their stores 00:03:37.92\00:03:40.84 to get that up because remember, 00:03:40.87\00:03:42.51 when the vitamin D is good, the calcium, 00:03:42.54\00:03:44.73 these other chemicals are going to follow suit. 00:03:44.76\00:03:47.59 Everything is going to start working better. 00:03:47.62\00:03:49.61 So when you replace a nutrient that is low, 00:03:49.64\00:03:54.56 okay... that helps the entire body, 00:03:54.59\00:03:57.44 it's just not one chemical pathway. 00:03:57.47\00:03:59.17 Do you follow me? "I broke my hip and my 00:06:47.19\00:06:49.78 vitamin D level came back at 10" 00:06:49.81\00:06:52.27 Now you mentioned 20 someplace in there... 00:06:52.30\00:06:53.92 It came back at 10. 00:06:53.95\00:06:55.10 "I am just starting to take vitamin D, how much do I need?" 00:06:55.13\00:06:58.20 Now, is the body smart enough to take MEGA doses 00:06:58.23\00:07:02.91 of vitamin D and store it? Exactly! 00:07:02.94\00:07:04.95 It can use mega doses and sort of "catch up" 00:07:04.98\00:07:09.92 You're super deficient, you need some, 00:07:09.95\00:07:13.21 and the sooner you get it, the better. 00:07:13.24\00:07:15.05 So a person that's that deficient to breaking a bone, 00:07:15.08\00:07:18.36 they need about 5,000 international units a day 00:07:18.39\00:07:22.21 for 2 to 4 months, then 1 to 2,000 maintenance dose 00:07:22.24\00:07:26.82 after that and then they can also have their doctor check it. 00:07:26.85\00:07:31.09 We don't want to have another broken bone. 00:07:31.12\00:07:33.32 You know, we don't want to have another broken bone. 00:07:33.35\00:07:35.07 But I just wonder, all the broken bones you have out there, 00:07:35.10\00:07:38.61 when you see the prevalence of this, 00:07:38.64\00:07:41.05 and the prevalence of other things, 00:07:41.08\00:07:42.84 just think, the real problem might be that we're not 00:07:42.87\00:07:46.01 getting the things that God wanted us to have 00:07:46.04\00:07:49.13 as substrates to have our body to operate optimally. 00:07:49.16\00:07:53.26 Boy, we've talked about bones before... 00:07:53.29\00:07:55.52 We've done a show on osteoporosis, 00:07:55.55\00:07:56.91 and our poor bones, we need to do everything 00:07:56.94\00:07:58.35 we can to keep them... 00:07:58.38\00:07:59.41 But you know, all this affects the heart, the blood pressure, 00:07:59.44\00:08:03.20 it just affects different things throughout the body 00:08:03.23\00:08:06.00 when you get the proper building blocks to function 00:08:06.03\00:08:08.89 and have energy. 00:08:08.92\00:08:10.19 Now, I know there's going to be people listening to this program 00:08:10.22\00:08:13.37 right now who are saying, 00:08:13.40\00:08:14.91 "It's dangerous for me to be outside" 00:08:14.94\00:08:16.32 You're saying 30 minutes a day. 00:08:16.35\00:08:19.35 What can we do to get the sunlight we need if 00:08:19.38\00:08:24.92 #1, we live in Alaska, we don't have sunlight 00:08:24.95\00:08:29.61 or it's cloudy or whatever, what can we do 00:08:29.64\00:08:31.67 across the time? Yeah, there are lots of different things... 00:08:31.71\00:08:34.35 You don't have to be in the sunlight. 00:08:34.38\00:08:35.91 You can take the supplements, they're activated. 00:08:35.94\00:08:39.10 They have different lamps that you can put out. 00:08:39.13\00:08:41.97 So you... you think those lamps are good.
