00:48 Ahhh.. the beach! The sand, the sun, the surf!
00:53 You just feel GOOD!
00:55 But you're about to learn that something else
00:57 takes place there, something that's important for our health,
01:00 our hormones and our wellbeing.
01:03 Dr. Marcum, any treatment that includes a beach... I'm there!
01:07 Hey, that's pretty cool, Charles!
01:09 I like those sunglasses! Oh yes, yes
01:13 You know, what did we used to do before we had sunglasses?
01:16 I don't know! I have no idea.
01:18 I wasn't there, Dr. Marcum. Maybe YOU were!
01:20 I guess we had some eye burns back then... eye burns
01:23 You know, you can't put that lotion on your eyeballs, I guess
01:26 No, I guess you can't.
01:27 Hey listen, we've got an important topic today,
01:31 and that's about the beach! Yes
01:33 The other day, someone came in,
01:35 and I could see that they weren't having the best of days.
01:38 They were a little bit stressed out, not too much going on,
01:42 and I wrote a prescription and I was very serious about it.
01:46 I said, "Take beach, go 3 days, stay out 6 hours a day,
01:50 return... this and that.
01:51 And I gave it to them and I said, "Here's your prescription"
01:54 Take beach... Take the beach Take the beach.
01:56 Prescription for the beach.
01:58 Now you might laugh at that,
02:00 and there might be people out there that laugh,
02:02 but there are real truths to giving a
02:04 prescription for the beach.
02:05 There are real benefits that come from going to the beach,
02:09 and we're going to talk about those today.
02:10 You know, YOU ALWAYS ARE SURPRISING me at how
02:15 SIMPLE some of the rules that
02:17 you are saying for our health are.
02:19 You are talking about REST, you talk about FRESH AIR,
02:23 you talk about SUNSHINE.
02:24 You talk a... SUNSHINE - BEACH
02:27 I think I'm making the connection here...
02:28 There you go - exactly!
02:30 Are you telling me that sunshine is a prescription for health?
02:32 ABSOLUTELY! You know, we were made to be out in the sunshine.
02:36 We were made to benefit -
02:37 there are chemical reactions that come with that,
02:39 and the reason that got me thinking about that, Charles,
02:42 it wasn't too long ago - probably one of the most
02:45 common questions I get at Heartwise is about supplements.
02:50 You know, supplements - people want to take all sorts
02:52 of this and all sorts of that and we see them all around.
02:55 Supplements!
02:57 So I said, well you know, supplements,
02:59 let's think about that...
03:00 What do we really need on this earth?
03:02 And luckily God gave us most of the things we need
03:07 in the original form where we can eat the calories itself.
03:10 Now through the years, I said, some of our food sources
03:14 have been damaged and sometimes our soil doesn't give all the
03:17 minerals we need - like magnesium and the trace elements
03:20 and selenium.
03:21 If people are strict vegans,
03:24 sometimes they don't get B6 and B12 and sometimes
03:29 they run short on iron, but we usually don't need
03:31 to take a lot of supplements...
03:34 EXCEPT supplements from the sun.
03:38 Did you know that the sun gives us a supplement?
03:42 I think I'm going to find out and I think it has to do with D
03:45 Yes, it has to do with vitamin D Vitamin D, okay vitamin D
03:48 Yes, vitamin D is actually not a vitamin at all.
03:52 It's a prohormone.
03:53 It causes the reaction of a lot of other things to happen.
03:57 And, I like to think of the body as a magnificent orchestra.
04:01 You know, you have to have everything in the right amounts,
04:04 pulling in the same direction at the right time.
04:07 That's why when we talk about food,
04:09 I think that when God gave us the food,
04:11 it had all the right makeup, you know, 30% this,
04:16 20% that, 20%... it was all in the right -
04:19 how our body was designed... Packaging was perfect!
04:23 Everything was right how it was.
04:25 Now today, we seem to load up stuff.
04:27 We got 80% protein, or 20% that...
04:30 Well, when we take certain supplements - too much of them,
04:33 it's like we upset the orchestra;
04:35 40 French horns don't sound good,
04:38 even though French horns by themselves are not bad. Yeah
04:41 So when a lot of people take supplements,
04:43 no matter WHAT it is, and vitamin D is a supplement,
04:47 most of the people if they take too much,
04:48 most of the time we urinate it out...
04:51 But sometimes it can disrupt the other intricate balances
04:54 of the other instruments that are trying to play.
04:57 We got too much of this making noise,
04:59 and we can't get these other ones into the cell
05:02 doing what it wants to do in the right amount.
05:05 So this is a fine balance that we have
05:08 based on the way God made us...
05:10 And vitamin D is a hormone that's involved in
05:14 lots of reactions in the body.
05:17 But what I found even more interesting,
05:19 and why we have to talk about it today,
05:21 is that right now, we have 1 in 4 adolescents
05:25 deficient in vitamin D.. 1 in 4
05:28 Is sunlight the only source we have for vitamin D?
05:30 No, there are lots of different sources,
05:32 we're going to talk about that. Okay
05:33 ...Thirty-three, 1 in 3 young adults
05:36 are deficient in vitamin D.
05:38 Something's wrong here... Yes it is
05:40 And nearly 60% of hospitalized patients
05:44 are deficient in vitamin D.
05:46 And more than 90% of people
05:48 that are critically ill are deficient.
05:50 So many people are deficient in this valuable prohormone
05:55 that's in charge of making this beautiful orchestra sound good.
05:59 That orchestra's cause in our body.
06:02 Let's talk a little bit to let everyone know we recognize
06:06 vitamin D - it's important for a lot of reactions.
06:09 But let's talk about what it does...
06:12 Well it affects the brain;
06:13 it helps make a chemical called "serotonin"
06:16 which helps our moods.
06:17 It's a treatment for depression.
06:19 That's why people that are in the dark all the time
06:23 like the Eskimos, have the highest risk of
06:25 suicide in the world.
06:27 And serotonin, that's the one that keeps us awake
06:29 as opposed to melatonin which makes us go to sleep.
06:32 No, melatonin helps keep us awake too.
06:34 Oh it does? Okay
06:35 No, melatonin puts us to sleep,
06:37 serotonin keeps us awake.
06:38 So it's serotonin that gets off whack if we don't have vitamin D
06:43 Now, what are other things that go?
06:44 You're trying to confuse me, Charles... I'm sorry
06:46 Blood vessels - blood vessels are affected by vitamin D.
06:50 Muscles, kidneys... lots of things are affected by vitamin D
06:53 In fact, when our calcium level...
06:56 You know, calcium is very important in our body.
06:58 Vitamin D is important in calcium.
07:00 When that goes up, there's a chemical that's made
07:03 by the glands here... it's called "parathyroid"
07:07 This helps regulate calcium balance.
07:11 Well vitamin D is again needed for this balance,
07:13 and when that chemical gets off whack, guess what?
07:17 It turns on our blood vessels;
07:18 our blood vessels make chemicals called "renin and angiotensin"
07:22 which makes them smaller.
07:24 It also causes other bad things...
07:26 inflammation to happen in the blood vessel.
07:28 Just because of this, the parathyroid goes up
07:30 because we don't have a vitamin D
07:32 So, it not only does that but it works on the brain;
07:35 it works on the muscles, it works on all sorts of things
07:38 even some cancers have been associated with vitamin D
07:42 In the creation of cancer or in the fighting of cancer?
07:45 In contributing cancer. Oh my goodness...
07:47 Because anything that's out of whack,
07:51 puts stress on the body, could trigger other bad things.
07:54 So the point I'm trying to make to everyone out there is
07:58 vitamin D, the hormone, is very important.
08:01 There's lots of chemical reactions,
08:03 some is the trickle down effect.
08:05 You know, you don't have parathyroid,
08:07 it makes the vessels get bad, it makes this get bad.
08:09 If you don't have it, it makes your brain get bad.
08:11 So this is a hormone that goes
08:12 through all the cells in your body.
08:14 So when you have a deficiency
08:15 of ANY of God's vital nutrients,
08:19 it makes the chemistry everywhere go bad.
08:21 Now Dr. Hippocrates, I didn't know him very well,
08:25 but he was a Greek guy,
08:28 didn't have those fancy sunglasses, Charles...
08:31 But Dr. Hippocrates said, "Let food be thy medicine"
08:35 We are now learning that when these balances,
08:38 when all these chemical balances are in the right proportions,
08:41 playing the right tune with the right amount of instruments,
08:44 great things happen!
08:45 But when we don't have enough nutrients...
08:47 You know, nutrients get off base like vitamin D,
08:50 BAD things happen.
08:52 Well I can see where you're going with this thing
08:53 because here we have a deficiency
08:57 which causes a cascade of problems through our body
09:00 which may be ending up down here,
09:01 and so we go see the doctor
09:03 and they do everything they can for THAT...
09:05 Let's work on THAT! Let's see if we can fix THAT!
09:07 When the problem really is the vitamin D deficiency. RIGHT!
09:10 And it might not only be that deficiency but it could be
09:13 another deficiency - like you don't have enough
09:15 magnesium in your body or you don't have enough
09:18 this or that or all those vital nutrients that God gave us
09:21 just because we're not eating the whole foods anymore.
09:25 We're eating the packaged foods.
09:27 They don't have as many of the good stuff, the vitamins,
09:29 the minerals, the trace elements ... you've heard of those. Yes
09:32 Things like selenium and zinc;
09:34 all these things are needed to make the
09:36 chemistry in the body happen.
09:38 And when you get the right amounts of things
09:40 in the right proportions, EVERYTHING does better,
09:42 but when you don't get any of it right, everything gets worse,
09:45 and I wanted to make that big point that vitamin D is critical
09:49 You know, no one wants to be depressed.
09:51 You know, no one wants to have blood vessel problems.
09:54 No one wants to have bone problems.
09:56 No one wants to have aches and pains.
09:58 I've had a lot of people improve,
10:00 not only their depression would go away,
10:02 but aches and pains would go away just when they
10:05 started getting enough vitamin D in their body, Charles
10:07 All right, I can see a problem developing here immediately...
10:11 Vitamin D is important to us and one of the main sources of
10:14 vitamin D is the sun; so we go out under the sun,
10:19 and we lather ourselves with sunblock,
10:21 we put a big hat on our head, we cover ourselves,
10:24 we hide from the sun, we keep our children
10:26 from the sun which means we're keeping them from a
10:29 main source of vitamin D, am I on the right track here?
10:32 Oh man Charles, you're brilliant!
10:33 That's why 1 in 3 young adults; 1 in 4 adolescents,
10:38 all these people are vitamin D deficient and the subsequent
10:42 chemical cascades that occur.
10:44 Anywhere from the depression to the bones,
10:47 and then one thing leads to another and guess what?
10:50 You know, the real problem might have been vitamin D,
10:52 it might not have been depression.
10:53 The real problem might have been this or that or the other.
10:57 The blood pressure problem might have been vitamin D.
10:59 Vitamin D also helps lower the blood pressure
11:01 because of a chemical called renin and angiotensin go down.
11:05 It's a very complicated cascade,
11:08 but we don't have to know everything about it.
11:10 You don't have to be a physiologist,
11:12 all you have to do is say, "Listen, I trust God
11:14 that He knew what He's doing and I'm going to try to get
11:16 back to sort of His plan so I don't have to use
11:19 all this other stuff. "
11:20 Now think about it... The original plan was for us
11:23 to be outside - we didn't have an apartment or a condo
11:26 or anything like that...
11:27 We were supposed to be out in the buff, Charles.
11:30 You know, in the buff. Guess what, you get in the buff.
11:33 Where you can get lots of sun tanning!
11:34 Yeah that's right, you get a lot of it...
11:36 I know, but it's even! Yeah, even tanning
11:38 But you'd get a lot of exposure,
11:40 that's how we were originally designed.
11:42 We weren't originally designed to have all these clothes on.
11:44 Now I don't want you to start
11:45 taking your clothes off or anything! Thank you very much
11:47 ...Because we're not going to get much in here.
11:49 Even though now they've invented vitamin D lights
11:53 that can do that too.
11:56 So we were designed to be outside.
11:58 We weren't designed to be inside and yet more and more
12:01 time we spend indoors and then we cover up our skin,
12:04 and one thing after another so we don't get that vitamin D
12:08 activation which the sun takes to activate it from
12:11 the rest of our bodies.
12:14 Now the good news is this...
12:16 Even if we don't get it out in the sun,
12:18 we can still supplement.
12:19 There's an active form of vitamin D...
12:21 You know vitamin D has to be activated.
12:24 There's an activated form called "D3"
12:27 that we can actually buy, and there are people that
12:30 live up north and they can have the light.
12:32 So we can supplement our vitamin D levels
12:36 even if we don't play by the rules we were made by.
12:40 Well that's a problem because someone listening right now
12:44 will say, "If I go out in the sun, Dr. Marcum,
12:46 if I go out for more than an hour or so,
12:49 I turn as red as a beet and I start blistering.
12:51 That can't be good! No, that is not good
12:54 for that person, so that person has to back off and go less.
12:57 But, you know, you have to figure out how much
12:59 you can go out before you burn.
13:01 A general guideline is at least 30 minutes 3 times a week
13:06 if you're not burning.
13:07 Now if you're burning, it's a different story,
13:10 but most people can go out for a little while
13:12 and enjoy that sun and vitamin D
13:13 And then a lot of people are also deficient in it
13:17 from their diets as well.
13:19 Something I've noticed personally about this...
13:21 is when I went to a whole food plant-based diet,
13:24 and cut out the oils and everything from my diet,
13:27 I can stay out in the sun a whole lot longer without burning
13:31 For some reason, my skin CHANGED as my health improved
13:34 with that new diet, so there may be
13:35 something there - we'll talk about that.
13:37 We'll take a short break and when we come back,
13:39 we're going to answer some questions
13:40 that have come into the heartwiseministries. org
13:42 website - questions you've been asking about the SUN,
13:45 so stay tuned...
