I'm there! 00:01:03.69\00:01:07.46 Hey, that's pretty cool, Charles! 00:01:07.49\00:01:09.53 I like those sunglasses! Oh yes, yes 00:01:09.56\00:01:13.05 You know, what did we used to do before we had sunglasses? 00:01:13.08\00:01:16.73 I don't know! I have no idea. 00:01:16.76\00:01:18.28 I wasn't there, Dr. Marcum. Maybe YOU were! 00:01:18.31\00:01:20.09 I guess we had some eye burns back then... eye burns 00:01:20.12\00:01:23.55 You know, you can't put that lotion on your eyeballs, I guess 00:01:23.58\00:01:26.55 No, I guess you can't. 00:01:26.58\00:01:27.61 Hey listen, we've got an important topic today, 00:01:27.64\00:01:31.02 and that's about the beach! Yes 00:01:31.05\00:01:33.18 The other day, someone came in, 00:01:33.21\00:01:35.55 and I could see that they weren't having the best of days. 00:01:35.58\00:01:38.93 They were a little bit stressed out, not too much going on, 00:01:38.96\00:01:42.30 and I wrote a prescription and I was very serious about it. 00:01:42.33\00:01:46.23 I said, "Take beach, go 3 days, stay out 6 hours a day, 00:01:46.26\00:01:50.31 return... this and that. 00:01:50.34\00:01:51.43 And I gave it to them and I said, "Here's your prescription" 00:01:51.46\00:01:54.22 Take beach... Take the beach Take the beach. 00:01:54.25\00:01:56.81 Prescription for the beach. 00:01:56.84\00:01:58.42 Now you might laugh at that, 00:01:58.45\00:02:00.02 and there might be people out there that laugh, 00:02:00.05\00:02:02.15 but there are real truths to giving a 00:02:02.18\00:02:04.79 prescription for the beach. 00:02:04.82\00:02:05.95 There are real benefits that come from going to the beach, 00:02:05.98\00:02:08.98 and we're going to talk about those today. 00:02:09.01\00:02:10.57 You know, YOU ALWAYS ARE SURPRISING me at how 00:02:10.60\00:02:15.30 SIMPLE some of the rules that 00:02:15.33\00:02:17.54 you are saying for our health are. 00:02:17.57\00:02:19.43 You are talking about REST, you talk about FRESH AIR, 00:02:19.46\00:02:23.36 you talk about SUNSHINE. 00:02:23.39\00:02:24.91 You talk a... SUNSHINE - BEACH 00:02:24.94\00:02:27.73 I think I'm making the connection here... 00:02:27.76\00:02:28.91 There you go - exactly! 00:02:28.95\00:02:30.02 Are you telling me that sunshine is a prescription for health? 00:02:30.06\00:02:32.95 ABSOLUTELY! You know, we were made to be out in the sunshine. 00:02:32.98\00:02:36.27 We were made to benefit - 00:02:36.30\00:02:37.43 there are chemical reactions that come with that, 00:02:37.46\00:02:39.80 and the reason that got me thinking about that, Charles, 00:02:39.83\00:02:42.52 it wasn't too long ago - probably one of the most 00:02:42.55\00:02:45.46 common questions I get at Heartwise is about supplements. 00:02:45.49\00:02:50.16 You know, supplements - people want to take all sorts 00:02:50.19\00:02:52.46 of this and all sorts of that and we see them all around. 00:02:52.49\00:02:55.21 Supplements! 00:02:55.24\00:02:57.54 So I said, well you know, supplements, 00:02:57.57\00:02:59.48 let's think about that... 00:02:59.52\00:03:00.55 What do we really need on this earth? 00:03:00.58\00:03:02.93 And luckily God gave us most of the things we need 00:03:02.96\00:03:07.85 in the original form where we can eat the calories itself. 00:03:07.88\00:03:10.01 Now through the years, I said, some of our food sources 00:03:10.81\00:03:14.18 have been damaged and sometimes our soil doesn't give all the 00:03:14.21\00:03:17.51 minerals we need - like magnesium and the trace elements 00:03:17.54\00:03:20.71 and selenium. 00:03:20.74\00:03:21.92 If people are strict vegans, 00:03:21.95\00:03:24.64 sometimes they don't get B6 and B12 and sometimes 00:03:24.67\00:03:29.10 they run short on iron, but we usually don't need 00:03:29.13\00:03:31.71 to take a lot of supplements... 00:03:31.74\00:03:33.97 EXCEPT supplements from the sun. 00:03:34.00\00:03:38.71 Did you know that the sun gives us a supplement? 00:03:38.74\00:03:42.22 I think I'm going to find out and I think it has to do with D 00:03:42.25\00:03:45.03 Yes, it has to do with vitamin D Vitamin D, okay vitamin D 00:03:45.06\00:03:48.91 Yes, vitamin D is actually not a vitamin at all. 00:03:48.94\00:03:52.26 It's a prohormone. 00:03:52.29\00:03:53.79 It causes the reaction of a lot of other things to happen. 00:03:53.82\00:03:57.55 And, I like to think of the body as a magnificent orchestra. 00:03:57.58\00:04:01.45 You know, you have to have everything in the right amounts, 00:04:01.48\00:04:04.07 pulling in the same direction at the right time. 00:04:04.10\00:04:07.14 That's why when we talk about food, 00:04:07.17\00:04:09.48 I think that when God gave us the food, 00:04:09.51\00:04:11.62 it had all the right makeup, you know, 30% this, 00:04:11.65\00:04:16.71 20% that, 20%... it was all in the right - 00:04:16.74\00:04:19.26 how our body was designed... Packaging was perfect! 00:04:19.29\00:04:23.75 Everything was right how it was. 00:04:23.78\00:04:25.22 Now today, we seem to load up stuff. 00:04:25.25\00:04:27.56 We got 80% protein, or 20% that... 00:04:27.59\00:04:30.49 Well, when we take certain supplements - too much of them, 00:04:30.52\00:04:33.92 it's like we upset the orchestra; 00:04:33.95\00:04:35.94 40 French horns don't sound good, 00:04:35.97\00:04:38.42 even though French horns by themselves are not bad. Yeah 00:04:38.45\00:04:41.07 So when a lot of people take supplements, 00:04:41.10\00:04:43.92 no matter WHAT it is, and vitamin D is a supplement, 00:04:43.95\00:04:47.37 most of the people if they take too much, 00:04:47.40\00:04:48.80 most of the time we urinate it out... 00:04:48.83\00:04:51.09 But sometimes it can disrupt the other intricate balances 00:04:51.12\00:04:54.86 of the other instruments that are trying to play. 00:04:54.89\00:04:57.92 We got too much of this making noise, 00:04:57.95\00:04:59.89 and we can't get these other ones into the cell 00:04:59.92\00:05:01.97 doing what it wants to do in the right amount. 00:05:02.00\00:05:05.27 So this is a fine balance that we have 00:05:05.30\00:05:08.49 based on the way God made us... 00:05:08.53\00:05:10.39 And vitamin D is a hormone that's involved in 00:05:10.42\00:05:14.58 lots of reactions in the body. 00:05:14.61\00:05:17.39 But what I found even more interesting, 00:05:17.42\00:05:19.28 and why we have to talk about it today, 00:05:19.31\00:05:21.16 is that right now, we have 1 in 4 adolescents 00:05:21.19\00:05:25.22 deficient in vitamin D.. 1 in 4 00:05:25.25\00:05:28.65 Is sunlight the only source we have for vitamin D? 00:05:28.68\00:05:30.54 No, there are lots of different sources, 00:05:30.57\00:05:32.13 we're going to talk about that. Okay 00:05:32.16\00:05:33.28 ...Thirty-three, 1 in 3 young adults 00:05:33.31\00:05:36.87 are deficient in vitamin D. 00:05:36.90\00:05:38.75 Something's wrong here... Yes it is 00:05:38.78\00:05:40.27 And nearly 60% of hospitalized patients 00:05:40.30\00:05:44.58 are deficient in vitamin D. 00:05:44.61\00:05:46.33 And more than 90% of people 00:05:46.36\00:05:48.03 that are critically ill are deficient. 00:05:48.06\00:05:50.64 So many people are deficient in this valuable prohormone 00:05:50.67\00:05:55.22 that's in charge of making this beautiful orchestra sound good. 00:05:55.25\00:05:59.58 That orchestra's cause in our body. 00:05:59.61\00:06:02.19 Let's talk a little bit to let everyone know we recognize 00:06:02.22\00:06:06.41 vitamin D - it's important for a lot of reactions. 00:06:06.44\00:06:09.27 But let's talk about what it does... 00:06:09.30\00:06:12.11 Well it affects the brain; 00:06:12.14\00:06:13.94 it helps make a chemical called "serotonin" 00:06:13.97\00:06:16.22 which helps our moods. 00:06:16.25\00:06:17.69 It's a treatment for depression. 00:06:17.72\00:06:19.81 That's why people that are in the dark all the time 00:06:19.84\00:06:23.45 like the Eskimos, have the highest risk of 00:06:23.48\00:06:25.73 suicide in the world. 00:06:25.76\00:06:27.38 And serotonin, that's the one that keeps us awake 00:06:27.41\00:06:29.68 as opposed to melatonin which makes us go to sleep. 00:06:29.71\00:06:32.03 No, melatonin helps keep us awake too. 00:06:32.06\00:06:34.05 Oh it does? Okay 00:06:34.08\00:06:35.11 No, melatonin puts us to sleep, 00:06:35.14\00:06:37.13 serotonin keeps us awake. 00:06:37.16\00:06:38.83 So it's serotonin that gets off whack if we don't have vitamin D 00:06:38.86\00:06:43.33 Now, what are other things that go? 00:06:43.36\00:06:44.89 You're trying to confuse me, Charles... I'm sorry 00:06:44.92\00:06:46.71 Blood vessels - blood vessels are affected by vitamin D. 00:06:46.74\00:06:50.24 Muscles, kidneys... lots of things are affected by vitamin D 00:06:50.27\00:06:53.85 In fact, when our calcium level... 00:06:53.88\00:06:56.34 You know, calcium is very important in our body. 00:06:56.37\00:06:58.74 Vitamin D is important in calcium. 00:06:58.77\00:07:00.72 When that goes up, there's a chemical that's made 00:07:00.75\00:07:03.66 by the glands here... it's called "parathyroid" 00:07:03.69\00:07:07.32 This helps regulate calcium balance. 00:07:07.35\00:07:11.04 Well vitamin D is again needed for this balance, 00:07:11.07\00:07:13.63 and when that chemical gets off whack, guess what? 00:07:13.66\00:07:17.29 It turns on our blood vessels; 00:07:17.32\00:07:18.92 our blood vessels make chemicals called "renin and angiotensin" 00:07:18.95\00:07:22.17 which makes them smaller. 00:07:22.20\00:07:24.41 It also causes other bad things... 00:07:24.44\00:07:26.20 inflammation to happen in the blood vessel. 00:07:26.23\00:07:28.47 Just because of this, the parathyroid goes up 00:07:28.50\00:07:30.55 because we don't have a vitamin D 00:07:30.58\00:07:32.59 So, it not only does that but it works on the brain; 00:07:32.62\00:07:34.98 it works on the muscles, it works on all sorts of things 00:07:35.01\00:07:38.58 even some cancers have been associated with vitamin D 00:07:38.61\00:07:42.96 In the creation of cancer or in the fighting of cancer? 00:07:42.99\00:07:45.26 In contributing cancer. Oh my goodness... 00:07:45.29\00:07:47.85 Because anything that's out of whack, 00:07:47.88\00:07:51.23 puts stress on the body, could trigger other bad things. 00:07:51.26\00:07:54.66 So the point I'm trying to make to everyone out there is 00:07:54.69\00:07:58.84 vitamin D, the hormone, is very important. 00:07:58.87\00:08:01.36 There's lots of chemical reactions, 00:08:01.39\00:08:03.31 some is the trickle down effect. 00:08:03.34\00:08:05.74 You know, you don't have parathyroid, 00:08:05.77\00:08:07.24 it makes the vessels get bad, it makes this get bad. 00:08:07.27\00:08:09.57 If you don't have it, it makes your brain get bad. 00:08:09.60\00:08:11.41 So this is a hormone that goes 00:08:11.44\00:08:12.54 through all the cells in your body. 00:08:12.57\00:08:14.41 So when you have a deficiency 00:08:14.44\00:08:15.90 of ANY of God's vital nutrients, 00:08:15.93\00:08:19.32 it makes the chemistry everywhere go bad. 00:08:19.35\00:08:21.69 Now Dr. Hippocrates, I didn't know him very well, 00:08:21.72\00:08:25.94 but he was a Greek guy, 00:08:25.97\00:08:28.50 didn't have those fancy sunglasses, Charles... 00:08:28.53\00:08:31.18 But Dr. Hippocrates said, "Let food be thy medicine" 00:08:31.21\00:08:35.34 We are now learning that when these balances, 00:08:35.37\00:08:38.15 when all these chemical balances are in the right proportions, 00:08:38.18\00:08:41.35 playing the right tune with the right amount of instruments, 00:08:41.38\00:08:44.28 great things happen! 00:08:44.31\00:08:45.54 But when we don't have enough nutrients... 00:08:45.57\00:08:47.96 You know, nutrients get off base like vitamin D, 00:08:47.99\00:08:50.72 BAD things happen. 00:08:50.75\00:08:52.13 Well I can see where you're going with this thing 00:08:52.16\00:08:53.64 because here we have a deficiency 00:08:53.67\00:08:57.27 which causes a cascade of problems through our body 00:08:57.30\00:09:00.15 which may be ending up down here, 00:09:00.18\00:09:01.83 and so we go see the doctor 00:09:01.86\00:09:02.97 and they do everything they can for THAT... 00:09:03.00\00:09:05.06 Let's work on THAT! Let's see if we can fix THAT! 00:09:05.09\00:09:07.69 When the problem really is the vitamin D deficiency. RIGHT! 00:09:07.72\00:09:10.90 And it might not only be that deficiency but it could be 00:09:10.93\00:09:13.50 another deficiency - like you don't have enough 00:09:13.53\00:09:15.91 magnesium in your body or you don't have enough 00:09:15.94\00:09:18.56 this or that or all those vital nutrients that God gave us 00:09:18.59\00:09:21.88 just because we're not eating the whole foods anymore. 00:09:21.91\00:09:25.73 We're eating the packaged foods. 00:09:25.76\00:09:27.06 They don't have as many of the good stuff, the vitamins, 00:09:27.09\00:09:29.71 the minerals, the trace elements ... you've heard of those. Yes 00:09:29.74\00:09:32.19 Things like selenium and zinc; 00:09:32.22\00:09:34.04 all these things are needed to make the 00:09:34.07\00:09:36.35 chemistry in the body happen. 00:09:36.38\00:09:38.14 And when you get the right amounts of things 00:09:38.17\00:09:40.12 in the right proportions, EVERYTHING does better, 00:09:40.15\00:09:42.69 but when you don't get any of it right, everything gets worse, 00:09:42.72\00:09:45.35 and I wanted to make that big point that vitamin D is critical 00:09:45.38\00:09:49.94 You know, no one wants to be depressed. 00:09:49.97\00:09:51.67 You know, no one wants to have blood vessel problems. 00:09:51.70\00:09:54.91 No one wants to have bone problems. 00:09:54.94\00:09:56.59 No one wants to have aches and pains. 00:09:56.62\00:09:58.65 I've had a lot of people improve, 00:09:58.68\00:10:00.30 not only their depression would go away, 00:10:00.33\00:10:02.76 but aches and pains would go away just when they 00:10:02.79\00:10:04.98 started getting enough vitamin D in their body, Charles 00:10:05.01\00:10:07.75 All right, I can see a problem developing here immediately... 00:10:07.78\00:10:11.50 Vitamin D is important to us and one of the main sources of 00:10:11.53\00:10:14.79 vitamin D is the sun; so we go out under the sun, 00:10:14.82\00:10:19.18 and we lather ourselves with sunblock, 00:10:19.21\00:10:21.57 we put a big hat on our head, we cover ourselves, 00:10:21.60\00:10:24.86 we hide from the sun, we keep our children 00:10:24.89\00:10:26.78 from the sun which means we're keeping them from a 00:10:26.81\00:10:29.53 main source of vitamin D, am I on the right track here? 00:10:29.56\00:10:32.67 Oh man Charles, you're brilliant! 00:10:32.70\00:10:33.89 That's why 1 in 3 young adults; 1 in 4 adolescents, 00:10:33.92\00:10:38.31 all these people are vitamin D deficient and the subsequent 00:10:38.34\00:10:42.27 chemical cascades that occur. 00:10:42.30\00:10:44.46 Anywhere from the depression to the bones, 00:10:44.49\00:10:47.02 and then one thing leads to another and guess what? 00:10:47.05\00:10:50.38 You know, the real problem might have been vitamin D, 00:10:50.41\00:10:52.26 it might not have been depression. 00:10:52.29\00:10:53.72 The real problem might have been this or that or the other. 00:10:53.75\00:10:57.26 The blood pressure problem might have been vitamin D. 00:10:57.29\00:10:59.33 Vitamin D also helps lower the blood pressure 00:10:59.36\00:11:01.82 because of a chemical called renin and angiotensin go down. 00:11:01.85\00:11:05.13 It's a very complicated cascade, 00:11:05.16\00:11:08.07 but we don't have to know everything about it. 00:11:08.10\00:11:10.61 You don't have to be a physiologist, 00:11:10.64\00:11:11.99 all you have to do is say, "Listen, I trust God 00:11:12.02\00:11:14.46 that He knew what He's doing and I'm going to try to get 00:11:14.49\00:11:16.86 back to sort of His plan so I don't have to use 00:11:16.89\00:11:19.18 all this other stuff. " 00:11:19.21\00:11:20.30 Now think about it... The original plan was for us 00:11:20.33\00:11:23.33 to be outside - we didn't have an apartment or a condo 00:11:23.36\00:11:26.36 or anything like that... 00:11:26.39\00:11:27.43 We were supposed to be out in the buff, Charles. 00:11:27.46\00:11:30.71 You know, in the buff. Guess what, you get in the buff. 00:11:30.74\00:11:33.11 Where you can get lots of sun tanning! 00:11:33.14\00:11:34.63 Yeah that's right, you get a lot of it... 00:11:34.66\00:11:36.50 I know, but it's even! Yeah, even tanning 00:11:36.53\00:11:38.65 But you'd get a lot of exposure, 00:11:38.68\00:11:40.05 that's how we were originally designed. 00:11:40.08\00:11:42.24 We weren't originally designed to have all these clothes on. 00:11:42.27\00:11:44.72 Now I don't want you to start 00:11:44.75\00:11:45.96 taking your clothes off or anything! Thank you very much 00:11:45.99\00:11:47.72 ...Because we're not going to get much in here. 00:11:47.75\00:11:49.78 Even though now they've invented vitamin D lights 00:11:49.81\00:11:53.57 that can do that too. 00:11:53.60\00:11:56.40 So we were designed to be outside. 00:11:56.43\00:11:58.44 We weren't designed to be inside and yet more and more 00:11:58.47\00:12:01.44 time we spend indoors and then we cover up our skin, 00:12:01.47\00:12:04.94 and one thing after another so we don't get that vitamin D 00:12:04.97\00:12:08.54 activation which the sun takes to activate it from 00:12:08.57\00:12:11.95 the rest of our bodies. 00:12:11.98\00:12:14.47 Now the good news is this... 00:12:14.50\00:12:16.34 Even if we don't get it out in the sun, 00:12:16.37\00:12:18.33 we can still supplement. 00:12:18.36\00:12:19.60 There's an active form of vitamin D... 00:12:19.63\00:12:21.87 You know vitamin D has to be activated. 00:12:21.90\00:12:24.21 There's an activated form called "D3" 00:12:24.24\00:12:27.55 that we can actually buy, and there are people that 00:12:27.58\00:12:30.57 live up north and they can have the light. 00:12:30.60\00:12:32.55 So we can supplement our vitamin D levels 00:12:32.58\00:12:36.08 even if we don't play by the rules we were made by. 00:12:36.11\00:12:40.70 Well that's a problem because someone listening right now 00:12:40.73\00:12:44.22 will say, "If I go out in the sun, Dr. Marcum, 00:12:44.25\00:12:46.33 if I go out for more than an hour or so, 00:12:46.36\00:12:49.09 I turn as red as a beet and I start blistering. 00:12:49.12\00:12:51.78 That can't be good! No, that is not good 00:12:51.81\00:12:54.22 for that person, so that person has to back off and go less. 00:12:54.25\00:12:57.58 But, you know, you have to figure out how much 00:12:57.61\00:12:59.61 you can go out before you burn. 00:12:59.64\00:13:01.71 A general guideline is at least 30 minutes 3 times a week 00:13:01.74\00:13:06.30 if you're not burning. 00:13:06.33\00:13:07.55 Now if you're burning, it's a different story, 00:13:07.58\00:13:10.02 but most people can go out for a little while 00:13:10.05\00:13:12.01 and enjoy that sun and vitamin D 00:13:12.04\00:13:13.83 And then a lot of people are also deficient in it 00:13:13.86\00:13:17.55 from their diets as well. 00:13:17.58\00:13:19.37 Something I've noticed personally about this... 00:13:19.40\00:13:21.59 is when I went to a whole food plant-based diet, 00:13:21.62\00:13:24.28 and cut out the oils and everything from my diet, 00:13:24.31\00:13:27.66 I can stay out in the sun a whole lot longer without burning 00:13:27.69\00:13:31.13 For some reason, my skin CHANGED as my health improved 00:13:31.16\00:13:34.50 with that new diet, so there may be 00:13:34.53\00:13:35.72 something there - we'll talk about that. 00:13:35.75\00:13:37.00 We'll take a short break and when we come back, 00:13:37.03\00:13:39.07 we're going to answer some questions 00:13:39.10\00:13:40.13 that have come into the heartwiseministries. org 00:13:40.16\00:13:42.10 website - questions you've been asking about the SUN, 00:13:42.13\00:13:44.98 so stay tuned... 00:13:45.01\00:13:47.08
