" this is the question... 00:01:18.25\00:01:20.06 "I had a heart attack 3 weeks ago; 00:01:20.09\00:01:22.08 I know I should quit smoking" 00:01:22.11\00:01:24.68 "Does too much stress trigger heart attacks?" 00:01:24.71\00:01:27.99 There's sort of a strange little, hidden message here... 00:01:28.02\00:01:31.00 "I know I should quit smoking" but let's talk about stress... 00:01:31.03\00:01:32.96 "Can smoking cause a heart attack?" 00:01:32.99\00:01:36.63 Is there a connection there? 00:01:36.66\00:01:37.80 Remember, we weren't designed to smoke cigarettes. 00:01:37.83\00:01:41.31 So smoking brings us a lot of toxins in our body. 00:01:41.34\00:01:44.43 It takes away... you know, carbon monoxide takes away 00:01:44.46\00:01:47.36 oxygen from the cells and makes our cells constrict; 00:01:47.39\00:01:50.05 makes us more prone to develop cancer, heart disease, strokes; 00:01:50.08\00:01:53.89 the list goes on and on. 00:01:53.92\00:01:55.85 So cigarettes are not good, that's a stressor. 00:01:55.88\00:01:59.18 And if you think about it, all stress that goes against 00:01:59.21\00:02:02.71 the way we were made, is going to increase the 00:02:02.74\00:02:05.13 chance of us developing health problems. 00:02:05.16\00:02:07.06 If stress constricts an artery, and that artery is 00:02:07.09\00:02:12.61 blocked somewhat with plaque, atherosclerosis, 00:02:12.64\00:02:15.11 is it possible to have a heart attack simply because 00:02:15.14\00:02:20.51 you're stressful with atherosclerosis in your artery? 00:02:20.54\00:02:24.37 Yes it is. It closes it off... Yes it is 00:02:24.40\00:02:26.28 Also, I had a lady not too long ago that was at a funeral, 00:02:26.31\00:02:31.63 and she was so upset, all the adrenalin, all the stress 00:02:31.66\00:02:35.73 from the funeral - they lost their loved one, 00:02:35.76\00:02:37.80 and that was so catastrophic that she had so much adrenalin 00:02:37.83\00:02:41.19 that the adrenalin caused her arteries to become completely 00:02:41.22\00:02:44.39 occluded and she had a heart attack. 00:02:44.42\00:02:47.01 When we studied those arteries, 00:02:47.04\00:02:48.58 those arteries had no plaque, no blockages at all. 00:02:48.61\00:02:52.28 And we call that "the broken heart syndrome" 00:02:52.31\00:02:55.02 So extreme amounts of stress can actually trigger 00:02:55.05\00:02:58.73 heart attacks. 00:02:58.76\00:02:59.96 You know, and it's scary and, of course, 00:02:59.99\00:03:02.95 anywhere in-between the stress depending on your genetics - 00:03:02.98\00:03:06.60 is going to affect anyone. 00:03:06.63\00:03:07.99 But needless to say, it is not good, so this gentleman 00:03:08.02\00:03:11.70 all the stressors of life including the cigarettes, 00:03:11.73\00:03:15.40 is going to increase his risk, not only having heart problems, 00:03:15.43\00:03:18.94 but other health problems. 00:03:18.97\00:03:20.39 Because, remember, the brain controls the whole body. 00:03:20.42\00:03:23.55 If you're not thinking good, you're not making good decisions 00:03:23.58\00:03:26.72 If you're stressed out, the blood pressure, 00:03:26.75\00:03:28.84 inflammation is going on in your body - NOTHING WORKS GOOD. 00:03:28.87\00:03:32.02 So, if you can see, this is many interworking parts... 00:03:32.05\00:03:36.51 so the heart attack is really not the problem. Right 00:03:36.54\00:03:39.53 It's what CAUSED the heart attack... 00:03:39.56\00:03:41.48 And what's going to cause the future one? 00:03:41.51\00:03:43.35 So when a person comes to me and they've had a heart attack, 00:03:43.38\00:03:45.79 sure we'll put in a stent. 00:03:45.82\00:03:47.27 We might even do a bypass surgery... 00:03:47.30\00:03:49.01 But I tell them... THAT doesn't fix the problem. 00:03:49.04\00:03:52.29 Let's see if we can get at the underlying causes 00:03:52.32\00:03:54.50 of stress, lower them and also teach you GOOD ways 00:03:54.53\00:03:58.41 to balance stress. 00:03:58.44\00:03:59.97 There are lots of good ways we can balance stress 00:04:00.00\00:04:02.08 that's been given to us by God. 00:04:02.11\00:04:04.43 God has taught us lots of ways; 00:04:04.46\00:04:06.03 we've talked about worship; 00:04:06.06\00:04:07.70 we've talked about doing the things we were designed to do 00:04:07.73\00:04:10.48 like serving, taking care of, not being scared, 00:04:10.51\00:04:13.56 and how about LAUGHING! Yes 00:04:13.59\00:04:15.21 There's nothing wrong with laughing! 00:04:15.24\00:04:17.05 Laughing, as-a-matter-of-fact, you've said that that actually 00:04:17.08\00:04:19.16 released endorphins. Yeah 00:04:19.19\00:04:21.04 There is nothing wrong with having a good time! 00:04:21.07\00:04:23.91 Having a vacation, doing these fun things. 00:04:23.94\00:04:26.75 You know, occasionally have a feast! 00:04:26.78\00:04:28.68 Doing things that make you happy! 00:04:28.71\00:04:30.84 God wants His people to be happy, Charles. 00:04:30.87\00:04:34.12 He wants them to live with lots of love. 00:04:34.15\00:04:36.26 He wants us... and all this is good for the chemistry. 00:04:36.29\00:04:39.35 I have a lot of people that come up to me when they 00:04:39.38\00:04:41.13 get older, Charles, and I say, 00:04:41.16\00:04:42.70 "Listen, I've never seen one 80-year-old that comes 00:04:42.73\00:04:45.78 to the hospital and says, "I wish I would have 00:04:45.81\00:04:48.71 worked more, Dr. Marcum. " 00:04:48.74\00:04:50.16 "I wish I worked more, I wish I made more money, 00:04:50.19\00:04:52.95 and I wish this... Okay, question #2... 00:06:11.30\00:06:13.85 "What are some methods other than Xanax to 00:06:13.88\00:06:16.39 lower my stress load?" 00:06:16.42\00:06:18.15 "Xanax did bring down my blood pressure" 00:06:18.18\00:06:20.52 So it was working, but I'm glad they're saying here... 00:06:20.55\00:06:22.98 Are there some other methods because you've always said 00:06:23.01\00:06:26.21 that drugs are temporary. 00:06:26.24\00:06:27.34 We should just take them for a while. 00:06:27.37\00:06:28.64 And I applaud that person... 00:06:28.67\00:06:30.30 Now some people do have mental health problems, 00:06:30.33\00:06:33.06 and have bad genetics and need medicines forever, 00:06:33.09\00:06:36.86 but some don't and this person recognizes that they're stressed 00:06:36.89\00:06:41.63 and they're on a medicine to deal with stress... 00:06:41.66\00:06:43.67 But if you can find out what the stressor is, 00:06:43.70\00:06:46.03 maybe you can deal with it. 00:06:46.06\00:06:47.72 It might be a job that you're unhappy with. 00:06:47.75\00:06:50.51 The stress might be not getting enough rest. 00:06:50.54\00:06:52.96 It might be stimulants that are causing stress. 00:06:52.99\00:06:55.92 It might be things in your past that have caused stress. 00:06:55.95\00:06:59.66 It might be fears in your life. 00:06:59.69\00:07:01.82 But should our GOAL be to remove the stress 00:07:01.85\00:07:05.60 or should our goal be to learn how to live with the stress, 00:07:05.63\00:07:09.07 to learn how to deal with the stress. Yeah 00:07:09.10\00:07:11.06 A combination, Charles, and that's a great question 00:07:11.09\00:07:13.46 because all the stress that we can remove, we want to remove it 00:07:13.49\00:07:17.70 For instance, if you and your family live in a place that has 00:07:17.73\00:07:20.69 lots of toxins and bad environments, 00:07:20.72\00:07:23.02 and you can get away from that stress... 00:07:23.05\00:07:24.74 You can move... Yeah but if you can't do it, 00:07:24.77\00:07:26.28 you can't do it. Yeah 00:07:26.31\00:07:27.34 And then if you have to deal with stress, 00:07:27.37\00:07:29.43 then you say, "Well what are healthy ways 00:07:29.46\00:07:30.90 I can deal with stress?" Okay, all right, I got ya 00:07:30.93\00:07:32.96 And healthy ways you can deal with stress are the things 00:07:32.99\00:07:35.58 that God gave us; helping other people; 00:07:35.61\00:07:37.99 getting enough rest; eating good food; 00:07:38.02\00:07:40.82 living the life that we were designed to be; 00:07:40.85\00:07:42.87 being HAPPY; 00:07:42.90\00:07:43.93 trying to move fear out of our lives. 00:07:43.96\00:07:46.67 You know, all of those things will help 00:07:46.70\00:07:48.93 head us in the right direction. 00:07:48.96\00:07:50.82 So if this person is on anxiety, the first person 00:07:50.85\00:07:53.07 I want to applaud them, do some things that 00:07:53.10\00:07:54.84 will help lower anxiety. 00:07:54.87\00:07:56.34 Exercise programs work great. 00:07:56.37\00:07:57.83 Getting on good nutrition works great. 00:07:57.87\00:08:01.68 Cutting back stimulants works great. 00:08:01.71\00:08:04.29 Helping other people works great. 00:08:04.32\00:08:06.52 And sometimes that's ENOUGH to change your chemistry enough 00:08:06.55\00:08:10.15 that you don't need to be a crutch on this medicine. 00:08:10.18\00:08:12.78 All right, very good! 00:08:12.81\00:08:14.52 Okay, another question from heartwiseministries. org 00:08:14.55\00:08:17.40 "I read that stress can be GOOD for a person, 00:08:17.43\00:08:21.02 I also heard stories that it can be bad" 00:08:21.05\00:08:23.31 "Which is it, good or bad?" 00:08:23.34\00:08:24.85 Yeah, we hear that a lot. 00:08:24.88\00:08:27.31 Remember, God made us to have this stress response 00:08:27.34\00:08:31.50 to move away from disasters. 00:08:31.53\00:08:34.37 If we have a lion chasing us 00:08:34.40\00:08:37.28 or if we're scared in the middle of the night, 00:08:37.31\00:08:39.01 or we need a little extra energy, 00:08:39.04\00:08:40.57 we kick these up to keep us alive... Yeah 00:08:40.60\00:08:43.52 But these were only made for short periods of time. 00:08:43.55\00:08:46.35 Can you imagine if the stress response is turned on 00:08:46.38\00:08:49.85 over months and months, years and years, 00:08:49.88\00:08:52.03 and all of the turned-on chemistry, 00:08:52.06\00:08:54.52 that's why sooner or later, people have ulcers... 00:08:54.55\00:08:56.97 Welcome to LIFE! YES! 00:08:57.00\00:08:58.82 They have high blood pressure. 00:08:58.85\00:09:00.37 They have all of this stuff that's going on; 00:09:00.40\00:09:02.32 mental health problems, inflammation, 00:09:02.35\00:09:06.20 the cells attacking the body that doesn't need to be there. 00:09:06.23\00:09:10.94 If it happens years and years, then guess what? 00:09:10.97\00:09:12.64 Our solution is to give medicines! 00:09:12.67\00:09:15.75 But our solution might be just understand 00:09:15.78\00:09:18.27 ...well, what us causing the stress? 00:09:18.30\00:09:20.19 What is off-balance here? 00:09:20.22\00:09:21.94 And if we can work on those things, 00:09:21.97\00:09:23.76 maybe we don't need as many medicines to deal with all this. 00:09:23.79\00:09:26.87 And really, we've got to help people understand their mind, 00:09:26.90\00:09:29.71 making their mind healthier... 00:09:29.74\00:09:31.34 And I think that the worship thing, 00:09:31.37\00:09:33.53 that is scientifically proven now, we know it helps. 00:09:33.56\00:09:37.36 The text in Matthew that says, "Come unto Me, worship Me 00:09:37.39\00:09:41.43 all you that have the stress response turned on all the time, 00:09:41.46\00:09:44.62 "Come and worship Me" 00:09:44.65\00:09:45.68 That's part of the solution here. 00:09:45.71\00:09:47.32 That's a prescription we want you to add to the regimen. 00:09:47.35\00:09:50.42 Don't ignore it... When you ignore it, 00:09:50.45\00:09:52.67 it could make things worse. 00:09:52.70\00:09:54.29 It is so important that we recognize 00:09:54.32\00:09:56.99 that there is stress in the life; 00:09:57.02\00:09:58.66 some of it can't be taken care of, some of it can, 00:09:58.69\00:10:00.91 and what we CAN remove, we need to remove. 00:10:00.94\00:10:04.22 We need to work very hard at that. 00:10:04.25\00:10:05.92 What we CAN'T remove, we need to learn how to 00:10:05.95\00:10:08.54 deal with it in a good way. 00:10:08.57\00:10:11.79 Can we do that alone? 00:10:11.82\00:10:13.44 Is it possible for us to live a life that is just free of 00:10:13.47\00:10:18.30 stress and everything is fine, sort of the Pollyanna effect. 00:10:18.33\00:10:21.42 Is it possible to do that or is it even healthy to that? 00:10:21.45\00:10:23.69 I don't think it's possible to and I look back to... 00:10:23.72\00:10:27.35 Well, what does the Bible teach us about these things? 00:10:27.38\00:10:30.93 Well God had the stress that came into our world 00:10:30.96\00:10:35.61 that messed everything up, 00:10:35.64\00:10:37.21 so the stress is going to be there. 00:10:37.24\00:10:38.90 We all have to do the best we can with it. 00:10:38.93\00:10:42.04 But I do think we're not determined 00:10:42.07\00:10:44.62 to move through this alone. 00:10:44.65\00:10:47.16 I think there's help for us and I think that the 00:10:47.19\00:10:49.62 Ultimate Physician, God, He wants to be our physician 00:10:49.65\00:10:52.78 that helps heal us through all of this illness that we have 00:10:52.81\00:10:55.91 that has brought on the world. 00:10:55.94\00:10:57.04 I think we have help there. 00:10:57.07\00:10:58.66 We always have to ask it, 00:10:58.69\00:11:00.23 and we also are promised to have healing. 00:11:00.26\00:11:02.70 It might not be right away through modern medicine; 00:11:02.73\00:11:05.14 it might be down the road; 00:11:05.17\00:11:06.60 it might be through a relationship, 00:11:06.63\00:11:08.44 but it's in that relationship that God can help heal us 00:11:08.47\00:11:12.06 and deal with this chronic stress that we all have. 00:11:12.09\00:11:15.60 Well, we're going to take a short break, 00:11:15.63\00:11:16.99 and when we come back, we're going to do 00:11:17.02\00:11:18.42 exactly what you said. 00:11:18.45\00:11:19.48 We are going to spend some time talking to the 00:11:19.51\00:11:22.16 Master Physician, the Source of Peace, 00:11:22.19\00:11:24.80 The Source of Love that we need so much in our life 00:11:24.83\00:11:27.20 is available anytime, like Dr. Marcum says, 00:11:27.23\00:11:30.09 no appointment necessary and you won't get a bill. 00:11:30.12\00:11:32.69 That's talking to God in prayer and we're going to do that 00:11:32.72\00:11:35.46 with Dr. James Marcum in just a moment, 00:11:35.49\00:11:36.87 so stay right where you are... 00:11:36.90\00:11:38.23 What an interesting discussion we've had today, 00:11:50.09\00:11:53.41 and just think about it, I hope this has added 00:11:53.44\00:11:55.66 value to your life and at least 1 or 2 things that you can 00:11:55.69\00:11:58.82 take from this moment and use in your life. 00:11:58.85\00:12:02.01 One of the things realizing that your mind does matter. 00:12:02.04\00:12:05.76 There are real chemical changes that happen the way you think. 00:12:05.79\00:12:09.10 So if you find yourself getting mad, take some deep breaths! 00:12:09.13\00:12:12.53 Figure out what you're doing; 00:12:12.56\00:12:14.80 try to improve your chemistry. 00:12:14.83\00:12:16.32 I think this is going to be very important because remember, 00:12:16.35\00:12:18.96 "As a man thinketh, so he is" 00:12:18.99\00:12:21.66 And in Matthew, God has given us a wonderful prescription 00:12:21.69\00:12:26.04 that He gives us as the Ultimate Healer. 00:12:26.07\00:12:29.08 He says, "Come unto me, worship me, be with me, 00:12:29.11\00:12:33.08 have a friendship with me, all you that labor, 00:12:33.11\00:12:35.94 and have heavy labor, all you that are 00:12:35.97\00:12:37.40 stressed out by this world" 00:12:37.44\00:12:39.24 ...Some things we can't even change; 00:12:39.27\00:12:41.12 some things we can't do anything about, 00:12:41.15\00:12:43.46 if you're in that mode, I've given you a treatment, 00:12:43.49\00:12:47.61 "Come unto me and I will give you rest" 00:12:47.64\00:12:49.72 We now have science to prove this chemistry. 00:12:49.75\00:12:53.83 We see our brains improve as we worship. 00:12:53.86\00:12:56.65 All these great things - it just makes me excited 00:12:56.68\00:13:00.61 when I talk about these, let's pray together... 00:13:00.64\00:13:03.37 Father God...
