Okay 00:03:27.99\00:03:30.46 So here are 2 studies that show that stress, 00:03:30.49\00:03:34.84 at least financial stress, changes the brain. 00:03:34.87\00:03:39.03 Changes the chemistry of the brain. 00:03:39.06\00:03:40.87 Now if you think about the rudimentary parts of the brain, 00:03:40.90\00:03:44.46 the thinking part is up front, the prefrontal cortex. 00:03:44.49\00:03:48.39 So if you're not thinking as good, 00:03:48.42\00:03:50.00 that part of the brain is not working as good. 00:03:50.03\00:03:53.05 So stress causes that part of the brain to make it simple 00:03:53.08\00:03:56.15 to work poorly. 00:03:56.18\00:03:57.64 The STRESS part of the brain, the parts that we have 00:03:57.67\00:04:00.06 in common with animals, the reptilian brain, so to speak, 00:04:00.09\00:04:04.51 we have a lot of stimulation of things called the "amygdala," 00:04:04.54\00:04:08.39 the stress part of the brain that turns on all the adrenalin, 00:04:08.42\00:04:11.63 all this inflammation that activates the immune system - 00:04:11.66\00:04:14.89 that keeps us under chronic stress all the time. 00:04:14.92\00:04:18.21 That is not good, Charles, and now we're learning, 00:04:18.24\00:04:22.00 just learning that health is much more than a bunch of pills. 00:04:22.03\00:04:26.15 It's about the way the brain reacts with the body, 00:04:26.18\00:04:28.82 about how the brain reacts with our genetics. 00:04:28.85\00:04:32.42 There are many different things and this is another 00:04:32.45\00:04:35.26 evidence that the mind and body, 00:04:35.29\00:04:38.54 in stress, affects the brain. 00:04:38.57\00:04:40.08 Now if you think about it, stress, Charles, 00:04:40.11\00:04:42.80 there are so many stressors going on nowadays. 00:04:42.83\00:04:45.01 You know, what is a definition of stress? 00:04:45.04\00:04:47.49 You know, you would think that stress, 00:04:47.52\00:04:49.21 and a lot of people believe that stress is something 00:04:49.24\00:04:51.21 that's happening in your life that is causing you to 00:04:51.24\00:04:55.07 have worry or concern, or sadness, but you're saying, 00:04:55.10\00:04:59.37 I think I hear you saying here that there's more kinds of 00:04:59.40\00:05:01.90 stressors than we actually realize and we may not even KNOW 00:05:01.93\00:05:05.08 that we have some stresses that are happening to us. 00:05:05.11\00:05:07.82 And all of them have some type of response. Yes 00:05:07.85\00:05:11.17 These are inputs that change our chemistry. 00:05:11.20\00:05:14.30 We don't know what the stress is, 00:05:14.33\00:05:15.38 but we know we're changing because of it. 00:05:15.41\00:05:16.84 In this article, we have evidence that it lowered 00:05:16.87\00:05:19.05 the IQ points, so the stress can hurt us. 00:05:19.08\00:05:23.63 Now if we think about stress is, you know, everyone asks, 00:05:23.66\00:05:26.71 "Well, what is your definition of stress?" 00:05:26.74\00:05:28.80 Well, when we went back to the way God made us perfectly, 00:05:28.83\00:05:32.74 I don't think there was much stress. 00:05:32.77\00:05:34.72 So anything that sort of deviated from that perfect plan, 00:05:34.75\00:05:38.90 I say, could put stress on the system. 00:05:38.93\00:05:41.67 When stress is placed on the system, 00:05:41.70\00:05:43.95 it turns on this chemical cascade including the brain, 00:05:43.98\00:05:47.92 including the prefrontal cortex, the way we think, 00:05:47.95\00:05:50.88 including the adrenal glands, 00:05:50.91\00:05:52.42 including our entire body and entire health 00:05:52.45\00:05:55.22 based on the way we're stressed. 00:05:55.25\00:05:57.19 So we talked about the mental stress from 00:05:57.22\00:05:59.16 worrying about money, but what about stresses like 00:05:59.19\00:06:01.75 not getting enough rest? 00:06:01.78\00:06:03.37 What about not drinking enough water? 00:06:03.40\00:06:05.90 What about the stress from eating the wrong foods? 00:06:05.93\00:06:09.64 What about the stress from not having a relationship? 00:06:09.67\00:06:12.02 Remember, we weren't ever designed to be alone. 00:06:12.05\00:06:14.73 We were designed to be with others, the stress of loneliness 00:06:14.76\00:06:18.41 What about the stress of not being outside? 00:06:18.44\00:06:21.00 You know, we were designed to be outside and not inside. 00:06:21.03\00:06:24.71 What about all the stress from all this multimedia 00:06:24.74\00:06:27.84 that affects our brains - that disrupts the creative 00:06:27.87\00:06:30.77 part of the brain versus the entertainment part of the brain. 00:06:30.80\00:06:33.84 THAT can create stress - not to mention all the toxins 00:06:33.87\00:06:37.82 in our world - all that can create stress. 00:06:37.85\00:06:40.99 So if you add it up, there are lots of things 00:06:41.02\00:06:43.64 that are going on that are creating stress in our system. 00:06:43.67\00:06:47.16 That stress causes some type of chemical pathway 00:06:47.19\00:06:50.32 and it also affects our entire body. 00:06:50.35\00:06:52.77 So not only do I want people to think of health involving 00:06:52.80\00:06:55.64 the food we eat, the treatments we get, but it also involves 00:06:55.67\00:06:59.70 the thoughts and the stresses that come into our body. 00:06:59.73\00:07:02.63 When our thoughts then are stressed, 00:07:02.66\00:07:05.41 when we have concerns or worries or sadness, or loneliness, 00:07:05.44\00:07:09.19 you're saying then that these stressors are just as toxic 00:07:09.22\00:07:14.21 to the body as a chemical, as a medicine, as a drug... 00:07:14.24\00:07:19.06 These things can be just as damaging to us as 00:07:19.09\00:07:21.72 the physical things that happen to us? 00:07:21.75\00:07:23.39 Yes, and let's look at the evidence... 00:07:23.42\00:07:26.53 One of the evidences here in this study, 00:07:26.56\00:07:29.04 these fellows had study people that just worried about finances 00:07:29.07\00:07:34.32 and their brain function went down quite a bit. 00:07:34.35\00:07:35.87 They didn't see a tiger. 00:07:35.90\00:07:36.93 They didn't see a snake coming at them. 00:07:36.96\00:07:38.28 They were worried about finances but the same thing happened! 00:07:38.31\00:07:40.55 Right and if they would have studied them doing other 00:07:40.58\00:07:42.83 stressors, I'm sure we would have seen the same phenomenon 00:07:42.86\00:07:47.29 and it's a chemical change. 00:07:47.32\00:07:49.36 There are different neurotransmitters that are made, 00:07:49.39\00:07:51.84 different ones that are turned down. 00:07:51.87\00:07:53.55 There are different neurons... 00:07:53.58\00:07:54.77 Neurotransmitters being those in the brain where we 00:07:54.80\00:07:56.64 process information. 00:07:56.67\00:07:57.84 Yes, that helps us think better. 00:07:57.87\00:07:59.56 There are different actual brain structures that conform. 00:07:59.59\00:08:03.80 They can actually get smaller if they're being stressed. 00:08:03.83\00:08:07.17 All these things are going on within the brain. 00:08:07.20\00:08:09.80 That's why that text, "As a man thinketh, so he is" 00:08:09.83\00:08:13.05 God knew what He was saying when He thought, 00:08:13.08\00:08:16.07 this mind thing matters a great deal. 00:08:16.10\00:08:19.20 Now, if it doesn't stop there, 00:08:19.23\00:08:20.75 there has also been some exciting research about 00:08:20.78\00:08:23.21 how we can improve our brain. 00:08:23.24\00:08:25.29 It only makes sense if we're going to stress our brain out 00:08:25.32\00:08:27.98 by all the things that goes against 00:08:28.01\00:08:29.52 the way we were made to be. 00:08:29.56\00:08:30.87 If we started moving back to the way God made us to be, 00:08:30.90\00:08:34.03 we could actually improve our brains, 00:08:34.06\00:08:36.12 improve our chemistry, turn down some of the stress. 00:08:36.15\00:08:39.75 Our thoughts have side effects, is what you're saying. 00:08:39.78\00:08:42.17 Exactly... both good and bad, 00:08:42.20\00:08:44.94 but for instance, if we could do things the way God made us... 00:08:44.97\00:08:48.84 When we rest more, that lowers stress, helps our brain, 00:08:48.87\00:08:52.54 helps our chemistry. 00:08:52.57\00:08:53.70 When we get outside, that helps our chemistry. 00:08:53.73\00:08:57.02 When we serve other people, when we love and not judge, 00:08:57.05\00:09:01.00 THAT helps our chemistry. 00:09:01.03\00:09:02.63 Oh, I wish I had studies on every 00:09:02.66\00:09:04.53 single one of these, Charles. 00:09:04.56\00:09:06.18 But Dr. Newberg at the University of Pennsylvania 00:09:06.21\00:09:09.35 has done some great research recently. 00:09:09.38\00:09:11.48 He takes PET scans and he looks at scans of people, 00:09:11.51\00:09:15.37 and he has them do different things. 00:09:15.40\00:09:17.01 One of the things he had was to worship. 00:09:17.04\00:09:19.85 These were PET scans of the brain? 00:09:19.88\00:09:20.94 PET scans of the brain - that's to see the 00:09:20.97\00:09:22.61 metabolism of the brain, how the brain is working. 00:09:22.64\00:09:25.50 We haven't been able to do this for years and years. 00:09:25.53\00:09:28.16 And this would have worked for this study too, 00:09:28.19\00:09:30.67 the one that they did. 00:09:30.70\00:09:32.82 He takes pictures of CAT scans, 00:09:32.85\00:09:34.58 and he showed that people that worship... 00:09:34.61\00:09:36.56 worship for prolonged periods of time, 00:09:36.59\00:09:38.99 they actually GROW the parts in the prefrontal cortex, 00:09:39.02\00:09:42.67 called the "anterior cingulate cortex" - the god-part brain. 00:09:42.70\00:09:46.58 So we actually can make new neurons by worship. 00:09:46.61\00:09:49.46 But does that surprise you... because we were designed 00:09:49.49\00:09:52.49 to worship God. Absolutely! 00:09:52.52\00:09:54.81 And when we worship other things 00:09:54.84\00:09:56.40 guess what that does to our brains? 00:09:56.43\00:09:58.17 We weren't designed to worship other things. 00:09:58.20\00:10:00.16 That could actually hurt our brains, could hurt our chemistry 00:10:00.19\00:10:03.44 It could actually put stress on us by worshiping other things. 00:10:03.47\00:10:06.41 Now here's a big one that is out there in the world, Charles 00:10:06.44\00:10:09.16 This word called "FEAR" 00:10:09.19\00:10:11.09 What do you think fear does to a body's chemistry? 00:10:11.12\00:10:14.27 I know fear does so many things to people; 00:10:14.30\00:10:17.15 stomachaches, headaches, trembling, high blood pressure, 00:10:17.18\00:10:21.10 all kinds of things happen when you're simply afraid. 00:10:21.13\00:10:23.05 ANYAHA! That kind of fear? 00:10:23.08\00:10:24.36 No, and I get you every time. You do EVERY time you do this 00:10:24.39\00:10:28.10 It's not that type of fear, it's the day-in, day-out. 00:10:28.13\00:10:31.35 The fear that I need to do this. 00:10:31.38\00:10:33.56 The fear that I'm not going to have enough money. 00:10:33.59\00:10:35.93 The fear that I'm not living my life good enough. 00:10:35.96\00:10:38.41 The fear that I'm going to get sick. 00:10:38.44\00:10:40.33 The fear that's all around us. 00:10:40.36\00:10:43.42 Now, there's a treatment in the Bible 00:10:43.45\00:10:46.87 that has to do with fear. 00:10:46.90\00:10:48.44 There's a treatment in the Bible. 00:10:48.47\00:10:50.29 A biblical prescription in the Bible that has to do with fear. 00:10:50.32\00:10:53.89 And it says, "LOVE casts out fear" 00:10:53.92\00:10:57.58 So when you have the chemistry of fear in your life, 00:10:57.61\00:11:01.09 which turns on the stress, the adrenalin, the epinephrine, 00:11:01.12\00:11:05.50 all that bad stuff, the cortisol, turns on your 00:11:05.53\00:11:08.32 immune system so it's attacking everything indiscreetly. 00:11:08.35\00:11:12.14 Just attacking good things as well as bad... 00:11:12.17\00:11:14.44 When it's doing this day-in and day-out, that type of stress 00:11:14.47\00:11:17.14 from fear, guess what? 00:11:17.17\00:11:18.72 There's a chemical treatment for that and that treatment 00:11:18.75\00:11:21.84 is called "LOVE" 00:11:21.87\00:11:22.97 Love turns down that fear that we have. 00:11:23.00\00:11:25.58 "Perfect love casts out fear" 00:11:25.61\00:11:28.04 So that's why when I'm looking at medicine, 00:11:28.07\00:11:31.88 when I say we're all healers, when we change 00:11:31.91\00:11:34.15 someone's chemistry, when we change the way we think, 00:11:34.18\00:11:37.21 we relate to them a different way, 00:11:37.24\00:11:39.09 we're literally giving them a prescription. 00:11:39.12\00:11:42.16 Now when we're not doing things correctly, we're hurting them! 00:11:42.19\00:11:45.45 You know, Charles, if I scared you to death today... 00:11:45.48\00:11:49.76 Again? They're scared! 00:12:04.20\00:12:06.15 People are scared about relationships, 00:12:06.19\00:12:08.10 they're scared about what's going to happen to the country. 00:12:08.13\00:12:10.41 They're scared about what's happening with their finances. 00:12:10.44\00:12:13.04 They're scared about all sorts of things. 00:12:13.07\00:12:15.68 We weren't made to be scared all the time...
