We're talking about medicines today 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.43 with Dr. James Marcum, I'm Charles Mills 00:00:02.46\00:00:04.38 Dr. Marcum has written a book, "Medicines That Kill" 00:00:04.42\00:00:06.61 about this subject and Dr. Marcum, 00:00:06.64\00:00:09.98 IS there a more efficient way that medicines can be used? 00:00:10.01\00:00:13.99 Are we using them inefficiently? 00:00:14.53\00:00:16.24 In other words... What do we need to know about the 00:00:16.27\00:00:18.06 medicines we're dumping down our throats? 00:00:18.09\00:00:19.59 I think we've already demonstrated 00:00:19.62\00:00:22.00 that we might be taking too many medications. 00:00:22.03\00:00:24.78 But also, the ones that we're using, 00:00:24.81\00:00:27.00 we're not using as efficiently... 00:00:27.03\00:00:29.12 And this is a big deal as we're talking about this current age 00:00:29.15\00:00:32.23 about the Affordable Care Act and ways to maximize 00:00:32.26\00:00:36.23 our healthcare dollars and they've estimated in this 00:00:36.26\00:00:40.18 Mayo Clinic article that was reported by CBS Atlanta, 00:00:40.21\00:00:44.19 reported that the savings if they use medications 00:00:44.60\00:00:48.45 that were given correctly, would pay for 24 million 00:00:48.48\00:00:51.68 Americans' insurance a year... 24 million! 00:00:51.71\00:00:55.50 So, not only do we need to try to get people OFF medications, 00:00:55.53\00:00:59.50 but those that we are using, we have to use much wiser. 00:00:59.85\00:01:03.67 They identified 5 things in their articles... 00:01:03.70\00:01:06.69 1. Patients not taking medications correctly or at all. 00:01:06.72\00:01:10.69 So if you're supposed to do it and you're not even doing it 00:01:11.22\00:01:13.43 correctly, why even bother. Waste of money! 00:01:13.46\00:01:15.80 It's going to cost more healthcare costs 00:01:15.83\00:01:17.59 because you might really need it for something. 00:01:17.62\00:01:20.07 2. Antibiotics prescribed inappropriately. 00:01:20.10\00:01:23.49 A lot of antibiotics are now written for 00:01:23.52\00:01:26.25 upper respiratory infections that are really viruses. 00:01:26.28\00:01:30.14 So that's another inappropriate use of medications. 00:01:30.17\00:01:33.59 3. Medication errors at every level - from doctors 00:01:33.62\00:01:37.40 to pharmacists, to hospitals... 00:01:37.43\00:01:39.69 Those mistakes raise the healthcare cost. 00:01:39.72\00:01:42.53 4. Not using generic medications. 00:01:42.56\00:01:45.34 That raises the cost if you can use it. 00:01:45.37\00:01:48.01 5. Making medications - too many of them making them 00:01:48.04\00:01:51.86 confusing, especially for the elderly. 00:01:51.89\00:01:53.84 So all of these things are just with the medicines 00:01:53.87\00:01:56.42 being written, these are things that they've identified 00:01:56.45\00:01:58.79 that if it were done better, 24 million Americans 00:01:58.82\00:02:02.53 could have more insurance. 00:02:02.56\00:02:03.81 So if you take THAT number and if all the different people 00:02:03.84\00:02:06.90 we might be able to get OFF the medications, 00:02:06.93\00:02:09.25 we could save a lot of money! 00:02:09.28\00:02:11.71 Not to mention, unfortunately medicines do have risks... 00:02:11.74\00:02:15.71 And Charles, every person that comes into my office, 00:02:16.40\00:02:18.99 I have it detailed - you know, what's the benefit 00:02:19.02\00:02:21.41 of the medicines, what are the risks, 00:02:21.44\00:02:24.05 what are the alternatives if we don't take it, 00:02:24.08\00:02:26.74 and then, is there anything naturally that's biblically 00:02:26.77\00:02:30.22 based that I can give them to maybe help them not 00:02:30.25\00:02:33.52 need that medication. 00:02:33.55\00:02:35.74 I'm just curious, Dr. Marcum, when you give them those choices 00:02:35.77\00:02:39.13 I know what you want them to say.. what is the ratio, 00:02:39.17\00:02:44.90 what does the average person do under those circumstances? 00:02:44.94\00:02:47.68 And a lot of times, the mindset of the community, 00:02:48.03\00:02:52.03 and the marketing is so strong out there. 00:02:52.57\00:02:56.43 You're competing with Madison Avenue here... 00:02:56.46\00:02:57.93 Yes I am, and I just give them the facts, 00:02:57.96\00:03:01.93 and I just give them the evidence, 00:03:02.10\00:03:03.97 and I say, "Listen, I know you're going to make your 00:03:04.00\00:03:06.26 decision and I'm going to be here to help take care of you 00:03:06.29\00:03:08.59 the best way that I can. 00:03:08.62\00:03:10.58 But, you know, if you want to maybe feel better, 00:03:10.61\00:03:13.07 here are some things you might consider doing. 00:03:13.10\00:03:15.13 Now sometimes when I go down this route, the people say, 00:03:15.16\00:03:18.27 "No, I just don't want to do it, I'm just going to go to someone 00:03:18.30\00:03:20.95 that will give me whatever I want whenever I want" 00:03:20.98\00:03:23.54 Because it's EASY! Yeah 00:03:23.57\00:03:24.79 But sometimes EASY is not the best, 00:03:24.82\00:03:27.35 and I used to have a problem and sometimes I will say, 00:03:27.38\00:03:30.33 "Listen, I love you enough to tell you the truth" 00:03:30.36\00:03:33.76 I love you enough to mention the cigarettes. 00:03:33.79\00:03:36.68 I love you enough to mention the medications. 00:03:36.71\00:03:39.29 I love you enough to mention 00:03:39.32\00:03:41.15 these mental health issues that I see here. 00:03:41.18\00:03:43.56 And at least I feel like I'm trying to reach out to them 00:03:43.60\00:03:47.57 and I pray for them... I think if you do it lovingly, 00:03:47.65\00:03:49.99 and not judgingly, that's the best way, 00:03:50.02\00:03:52.56 and realizing that you don't have to do 00:03:52.59\00:03:54.10 everything at once either. 00:03:54.13\00:03:55.48 Sometimes it's just little bitty steps and someone says, 00:03:55.51\00:03:58.40 "Well let me think about that" 00:03:58.43\00:04:00.17 That might be where it starts! That's good... Yeah! 00:04:00.20\00:04:02.69 That's actually a good message for us in the health field 00:04:02.72\00:04:05.40 when we want to help people. 00:04:05.43\00:04:06.72 Don't give them the whole boatload, 00:04:06.75\00:04:09.31 give them a little parcel here. 00:04:09.34\00:04:10.70 If you make THIS change, if you do this idea, 00:04:10.73\00:04:12.93 if you change your diet here... 00:04:12.96\00:04:14.49 A little bit of a time, they'd be more apt to do it. 00:04:14.52\00:04:16.51 And one of the things that has helped us in helping 00:04:16.54\00:04:19.02 people understanding the risk of medications and realizing 00:04:19.05\00:04:22.81 that 70% of people taking medicines 00:04:22.84\00:04:24.76 really is a failing grade. Yes 00:04:24.79\00:04:26.74 One of the things that has really helped is the internet 00:04:26.77\00:04:30.13 ...people have more ways of getting knowledge. 00:04:30.16\00:04:32.71 Before, it was always just - establishment said the way it is 00:04:32.74\00:04:36.04 ...this is the way it is; no, I said to do it, 00:04:36.07\00:04:37.94 so you have to do it. 00:04:37.97\00:04:39.15 Now, people are realizing there are different sets if truth. 00:04:39.18\00:04:41.97 And there are different sets of healers, 00:04:42.00\00:04:43.71 and I really encourage people out there to find a healer 00:04:43.74\00:04:46.88 or someone that works with you, 00:04:46.91\00:04:48.49 that you're able to bond with and develop a relationship... 00:04:48.52\00:04:51.98 Because a healing relationship is more than about medicines; 00:04:52.01\00:04:55.07 it's about lifestyle, it's about your spirituality, 00:04:55.10\00:04:59.09 it's about many things that all come together, 00:04:59.12\00:05:02.00 and I think that's so important in medications... 00:05:02.03\00:05:04.51 And I think if people try to look at the holistic model, 00:05:04.54\00:05:08.30 then we would maybe not need as many medicines 00:05:08.33\00:05:11.04 if we can look at the big picture sometimes. 00:05:11.07\00:05:13.25 All right... well as I mentioned before the break, 00:05:13.28\00:05:15.56 we have heartwiseministries. org 00:05:15.59\00:05:17.44 website where we gather questions from our viewers 00:05:17.47\00:05:20.80 and if you have sent us a question, wonderful, 00:05:20.83\00:05:22.82 this may be the one that you sent in. 00:05:22.85\00:05:24.41 Here's a question for you on this topic... 00:05:24.44\00:05:27.50 "Is it possible to come OFF of sleeping pills?" 00:05:27.53\00:05:31.06 This person says, "I have been on them for 5 YEARS" 00:05:31.09\00:05:34.33 Now should we assume if someone has been on something 00:05:34.36\00:05:36.03 for 5 years, that they're addicted to it? 00:05:36.06\00:05:37.67 Well, there are certain medications, 00:05:37.70\00:05:39.32 sleeping pills are certain ones that ARE addictive, 00:05:39.35\00:05:42.27 and there are some that are not as addictive, 00:05:42.30\00:05:44.22 but if you think about it, all of the sleeping pills 00:05:44.25\00:05:47.42 regardless of ones that are weak and strong, 00:05:47.45\00:05:49.43 don't really fix the problem. 00:05:49.46\00:05:51.35 So I would say, "Yes, it is possible to be off 00:05:51.38\00:05:54.40 of the medications and what can we do things 00:05:54.43\00:05:57.15 to find out WHY you're not sleeping, 00:05:57.18\00:05:59.35 and what are some things that we can do to aid your sleep 00:05:59.38\00:06:02.06 naturally. 00:06:02.09\00:06:03.33 A lot of people don't realize it, but there are the chemicals 00:06:03.36\00:06:06.65 in fruits like bananas contain L-tryptophan, 00:06:06.68\00:06:09.90 things that help you sleep - the chemical that helps you do that. 00:06:09.93\00:06:12.91 They metabolize into different sleep aids like melatonin 00:06:13.92\00:06:16.00 that your body naturally makes. 00:06:16.03\00:06:17.87 A lot of people don't realize, that learning how to 00:06:17.90\00:06:19.95 breathe deeply, helps relax your body so you can go to sleep 00:06:19.98\00:06:23.77 I want you to try something, Charles. All right 00:06:23.80\00:06:25.51 I don't want you to go to sleep, but just try this... 00:06:25.54\00:06:28.13 Just to prove that we can change our chemistry 00:06:28.16\00:06:30.71 in other ways than pills. 00:06:30.74\00:06:31.77 Take a deep breath - hold it, one-thousand-one, 00:06:31.80\00:06:35.81 one-thousand-two, one-thousand-three, 00:06:35.84\00:06:38.10 then blow it out as slow as you can, 00:06:38.13\00:06:39.61 all the way out, all the way out, all the way out... 00:06:39.64\00:06:41.29 Okay, and I want everyone else to do this too. 00:06:41.32\00:06:43.24 Take a deep breath, Charles, in through your nose, 00:06:43.27\00:06:45.56 hold it - one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two, 00:06:45.59\00:06:49.19 one-thousand-three, okay 00:06:49.22\00:06:52.11 Now, as people are breathing that way, 00:06:52.14\00:06:55.01 the body does start to relax. 00:06:55.04\00:06:57.13 I feel relaxing going on here. Yes 00:06:57.16\00:06:58.46 You turn on the parasympathetic nervous system, 00:06:58.49\00:07:01.59 the opposite of the stress and you start to relax. 00:07:01.62\00:07:05.39 Those are some things that people might be able to do 00:07:05.42\00:07:07.53 in the evening, as well as cutting back stimulation. 00:07:07.56\00:07:11.23 One of the worse things for people sleeping at night 00:07:11.26\00:07:13.30 has been television. 00:07:13.33\00:07:15.04 But, yes, the answer to this question... 00:07:16.04\00:07:17.88 It is possible to work with your doctor 00:07:17.92\00:07:19.73 to possibly be off these sleeping medications if possible 00:07:19.76\00:07:22.93 So the answer to that one is "yes" 00:07:22.96\00:07:24.92 Okay, if the doctor says what you say... 00:07:24.95\00:07:28.39 Not all doctors will do that and they'll say, 00:07:28.42\00:07:30.05 "Well you need a sleeping pill because you can't sleep so"... 00:07:30.08\00:07:31.97 Well then, at that time, you'd have a question either 00:07:32.00\00:07:34.22 to continue with that doctor or work with some other ones. 00:07:34.25\00:07:37.67 This is an important point we need to really spend 00:07:37.70\00:07:39.52 just a moment on it because what you hear 00:07:39.55\00:07:41.97 on this program - this is from a doctor 00:07:42.00\00:07:43.86 and he is telling you these things. 00:07:43.89\00:07:45.18 If he's telling you something that your doctor is not saying, 00:07:45.21\00:07:47.66 how do they decide whether you're right 00:07:47.69\00:07:49.64 or their doctor is right? 00:07:49.67\00:07:50.70 Well.. and I'm saying, not everything that I... 00:07:50.73\00:07:52.90 You know, I just do the best I can based on 00:07:52.93\00:07:55.24 the evidence that I have. 00:07:55.27\00:07:57.10 So I say - Let's look at the evidence! 00:07:57.13\00:07:59.29 But you're also using another model 00:07:59.32\00:08:01.15 that most doctors don't use. Yes, I use the biblical 00:08:01.18\00:08:03.96 framework to guide my recommendations, 00:08:03.99\00:08:07.24 and whether it comes from nutrition, the way we think, 00:08:07.27\00:08:12.53 the way we treat each other, 00:08:12.56\00:08:14.05 the way we use modern medicine, 00:08:14.08\00:08:15.66 the way we use nutrition. 00:08:15.69\00:08:16.95 I try to incorporate a biblical perspective to that. 00:08:16.98\00:08:20.54 Some other doctors are doing that, some others are not, 00:08:20.57\00:08:23.59 and each person has to figure out where they're at 00:08:23.62\00:08:26.18 in their life, what works best for them. 00:08:26.21\00:08:29.13 This approach might not work best for other people 00:08:29.16\00:08:32.04 or it might work and as you pray and ask God to lead you, 00:08:32.07\00:08:35.15 hopefully, you know, He'll take you where you need to go 00:08:35.18\00:08:39.25 at the time you need to go there. 00:08:39.28\00:08:40.79 And you are absolutely right, there must be ways of 00:08:40.82\00:08:43.59 doing this because there are countries 00:08:43.62\00:08:45.11 where they don't have a sleeping problem. 00:08:45.15\00:08:46.60 There are countries where they don't have a capitalism problem. 00:08:46.64\00:08:48.46 We have to think about these things and we have to admit 00:08:48.84\00:08:52.00 that they're problems. Yes, absolutely 00:08:52.03\00:08:53.93 Okay another question from heartwiseministries. org 00:08:53.96\00:08:56.30 "Are there any risks from taking acid-blocking medications 00:08:56.33\00:08:59.53 for a long time?" This is a big one... 00:08:59.56\00:09:00.72 Yeah, a lot of people are taking medicines that block acid. 00:09:00.75\00:09:04.03 They're making a lot of acid inside of them - 00:09:04.06\00:09:05.99 whether because they eat big at night or they get 00:09:06.02\00:09:08.55 stressed out or whatever... 00:09:08.58\00:09:10.09 They make a lot of hydrochloric acid; 00:09:10.12\00:09:12.43 sometimes it bubbles up and gets in the esophagus; 00:09:12.46\00:09:15.04 they can't swallow; it's very painful when 00:09:15.07\00:09:17.88 you lay down at night. 00:09:17.91\00:09:20.32 Sometimes if you take that long-term, 00:09:20.35\00:09:22.85 it changes the pH in your stomach. 00:09:22.88\00:09:26.14 Hydrochloric acid is made of 00:09:26.17\00:09:27.67 hydrogen ions and hydrochloric acid. 00:09:27.70\00:09:29.61 When you change that, sometimes these pills, 00:09:29.65\00:09:31.91 long time, changes the pH of the body and you actually 00:09:31.94\00:09:35.46 take calcium to balance things out from the bones... 00:09:35.49\00:09:39.29 So you can actually, long-term, you can make your bones a 00:09:39.32\00:09:41.90 little bit weaker by pulling calcium out. 00:09:41.93\00:09:44.20 There are also other dangers of being on it long-term. 00:09:44.23\00:09:47.15 You might mask a real pain that you need to know. 00:09:47.18\00:09:49.88 This is true... And it might mask a hidden 00:09:49.91\00:09:51.76 stomach cancer or an infection like H-pylori in the stomach. 00:09:51.79\00:09:55.89 So there are some real risks for this... 00:09:55.92\00:09:58.23 People can sometimes be off of those if they can change 00:09:58.26\00:10:01.05 the reason why they need them in the first place, 00:10:01.08\00:10:03.20 and it can be as simple as cut back the caffeine, 00:10:03.23\00:10:05.51 not eating big at night, eating smaller meals. 00:10:05.54\00:10:08.07 All right, here's a big one here from heartwiseministries. org 00:10:08.10\00:10:11.13 "I take Coumadin for atrial fibrillation, 00:10:11.16\00:10:13.63 are there any alternatives?" 00:10:13.66\00:10:15.19 That is probably the most common question I get 00:10:15.22\00:10:18.40 every day. 00:10:18.43\00:10:19.95 It's all about risks and benefits, 00:10:19.98\00:10:21.78 but alternatives - atrial fibrillation, heart valves 00:10:21.81\00:10:26.69 that are metal, clots in the legs, 00:10:26.72\00:10:29.61 those all need strong blood thinners because with that 00:10:29.64\00:10:32.84 it would cause major issues. 00:10:32.87\00:10:35.44 Coumadin is one that's been out there for years. 00:10:35.47\00:10:39.21 There are risks and benefits to that. 00:10:39.24\00:10:40.67 There are new ones out there called "Xarelto," 00:10:40.70\00:10:43.21 another one is "Pradaxa" 00:10:43.24\00:10:44.53 These have all been studied and been proven to be effective. 00:10:44.56\00:10:47.74 There are other ways to thin out the blood 00:10:47.77\00:10:49.86 that have NOT been proven - one is called "Nattokinase" 00:10:49.89\00:10:55.03 Some people know that drinking adequate water, omega 3, 6 and 9 00:10:55.06\00:10:59.46 but these have not been studied specifically like the Coumadin, 00:10:59.49\00:11:02.95 Pradaxa and Xarelto. 00:11:02.98\00:11:04.37 So you really have to talk to your physician about 00:11:04.40\00:11:06.93 what is best for you in each given situation, 00:11:06.96\00:11:10.23 but the stroke risk that comes from this rhythm called 00:11:10.26\00:11:14.16 atrial fibrillation really scares me... 00:11:14.19\00:11:16.95 And I would almost rather take the risk of a medicine 00:11:16.98\00:11:19.66 that I don't want to take, necessarily, 00:11:19.69\00:11:21.82 than to have a risk of stroke 00:11:21.85\00:11:23.13 because that devastates you forever. 00:11:23.16\00:11:25.49 That's an important thing because you really need to 00:11:25.52\00:11:28.25 see the benefits and the dangers and decide, 00:11:28.28\00:11:31.55 and you want to live and you want to 00:11:31.58\00:11:32.98 live a long time and healthy life. 00:11:33.01\00:11:34.54 So you make those decisions based on that too. 00:11:34.57\00:11:37.12 We will take a short break and when we come back 00:11:37.15\00:11:39.69 Dr. Marcum is going to take us to the Master Physician 00:11:39.72\00:11:41.98 for some advice from heaven, stay tuned... 00:11:42.01\00:11:44.28 I hope you've learned a little bit about medications today; 00:11:58.37\00:12:02.11 70% is indeed a failing grade. 00:12:02.14\00:12:06.03 Two things - #1- If you're on medications, 00:12:06.06\00:12:09.12 pay attention, learn about it. 00:12:09.15\00:12:11.27 #2- You might be able to come off a prescription medication 00:12:11.30\00:12:15.65 working with your doctor. 00:12:15.68\00:12:16.98 So these are 2 things to keep in mind. 00:12:17.01\00:12:19.38 I want to invite you to go to our website that's 00:12:19.41\00:12:21.85 heartwiseministries. org 00:12:21.88\00:12:24.29 where you can leave your specific questions for me 00:12:24.32\00:12:27.37 as well as read our interesting blogs. 00:12:27.40\00:12:30.57 And we want to say a prayer for everyone right now 00:12:30.60\00:12:33.66 that God will continue to work in everyone's health. 00:12:33.69\00:12:36.22 Let's just bow our heads together... 00:12:36.25\00:12:37.62 Father God... We want to thank You for being a God that 00:12:37.65\00:12:42.04 loves us, that takes interest in every aspect of our life 00:12:42.07\00:12:46.09 including the medications we take Father, 00:12:46.12\00:12:48.54 and please help us to learn more so that we can serve You better. 00:12:48.57\00:12:51.48 And we so look for the time in heaven when we don't have to 00:12:52.34\00:12:55.00 take these medications and pills and all these treatments anymore 00:12:55.03\00:12:57.85 This is our humble prayer.
