We look to it as our savior. 00:00:16.53\00:00:18.92 We depend on it to keep us alive. 00:00:18.95\00:00:21.55 We place our trust in it each time we swallow a dangerous drug 00:00:21.58\00:00:27.50 Maybe that's not a good idea Stay tuned... 00:00:27.53\00:00:31.04 I'm Dr. James Marcum 00:00:32.31\00:00:33.99 Are you interested in discovering the reason why? 00:00:34.02\00:00:37.19 Do you want solutions to your healthcare problems? 00:00:37.22\00:00:40.57 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:00:40.60\00:00:43.39 Well, you're about to be given the Ultimate Prescription. 00:00:43.42\00:00:48.08 Are you ready for a shock? Here we go... 00:00:50.66\00:00:53.79 Researchers recently reported that 70% of Americans 00:00:53.82\00:00:58.00 are on a prescription drug. 70% 00:00:58.03\00:01:01.03 That doesn't include over-the- counter medications. 00:01:01.06\00:01:03.48 We're consuming drugs like candy, 00:01:03.51\00:01:05.81 and paying a terrible price for the privilege, 00:01:05.84\00:01:08.28 but we're just doing what the medical establishment 00:01:08.31\00:01:10.75 tells us to do, right? 00:01:10.78\00:01:12.59 Dr. Marcum, I know this concerns you... tell us why. 00:01:12.62\00:01:15.24 Yeah, it concerns me for a number of reasons. 00:01:15.27\00:01:19.90 One of the reasons is sometimes medications, 00:01:19.93\00:01:22.60 though there is a place for it, 00:01:22.63\00:01:24.36 it's maybe not used the way they were designed to use. 00:01:24.39\00:01:28.10 Remember, medications were originally made to get people 00:01:28.13\00:01:32.30 over a short period of time. 00:01:32.33\00:01:35.28 In order that they can get their 00:01:35.31\00:01:36.34 own physiology back to the way it should be. 00:01:36.37\00:01:39.40 It wasn't necessarily meant to be given for years, 00:01:39.43\00:01:42.22 and years and years and years. 00:01:42.25\00:01:44.22 Also, all the plethora of things we see over-the-counter... 00:01:44.25\00:01:49.10 Right now, about 4 billion prescriptions are written a year 00:01:49.13\00:01:53.65 and who knows how many over-the-counters. 00:01:53.68\00:01:56.59 The #1 cause of fatal gastrointestinal bleeding 00:01:56.62\00:02:00.46 last year, in America, was by a class of drugs called 00:02:00.49\00:02:05.60 "nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs" 00:02:05.63\00:02:09.36 The #1 cause of liver failure, causing transplantation, 00:02:09.39\00:02:14.07 was too much of a chemical called "acetaminophen" 00:02:14.10\00:02:17.72 Sometimes that's something that's even found in 00:02:17.75\00:02:20.24 Tylenol as well as others, and that's too much of it. 00:02:20.27\00:02:24.03 The point is that we ingest a lot of chemicals and sometimes 00:02:24.06\00:02:29.24 we don't necessarily have to have these, 00:02:29.27\00:02:31.40 and yet, we're taking the risk. 00:02:31.43\00:02:33.21 Everything that we put in our bodies, 00:02:33.24\00:02:35.60 hopefully, has some benefit, but it also has risk, 00:02:35.63\00:02:39.56 and we must constantly be looking at the risk and benefits 00:02:39.59\00:02:43.31 of everything we put in our body. 00:02:43.34\00:02:44.97 Now when you say everything, you're talking about 00:02:45.00\00:02:47.08 even the things from over-the-counter? 00:02:47.11\00:02:48.63 Yep, over-the-counter, the different foods we eat, 00:02:48.66\00:02:51.64 the different toxins we're exposed to, 00:02:51.67\00:02:54.03 even the different thoughts we have, 00:02:54.06\00:02:55.58 have a chemical consequence. 00:02:55.61\00:02:57.64 So this article where they found 70% of Americans are 00:02:57.67\00:03:02.24 on a prescription drug, I said, "Wow, that's amazing" 00:03:02.27\00:03:05.73 Now these are Mayo Clinic researchers, 00:03:05.76\00:03:08.75 and they reported this article to CBS in Atlanta, 00:03:08.78\00:03:12.80 and they found that most of the people that were on the 00:03:12.83\00:03:15.54 medicine, 17% take antibiotics, 00:03:15.57\00:03:18.05 13% of the population are on antidepressants, 00:03:18.08\00:03:22.79 13% in this study were on pain killers, 00:03:22.82\00:03:28.11 and, get this Charles, 20%, 1 in 5 of American patients 00:03:28.14\00:03:33.16 were on 5 or more prescription medications. 00:03:33.19\00:03:38.50 So, if you look at this, 2 of the reasons were 00:03:38.53\00:03:41.91 for pain and depression. 00:03:41.94\00:03:43.25 That's a large number of people! 00:03:43.28\00:03:45.21 So, are there any other things that we can do 00:03:45.24\00:03:47.28 without taking this risk? 00:03:47.31\00:03:48.97 Now, the "Institute for Healthcare" 00:03:49.00\00:03:51.95 ...okay, everyone is concerned about cost right now. 00:03:51.98\00:03:54.62 They said that we could save 213 billion dollars 00:03:54.65\00:03:59.68 by just not prescribing so many medications. 00:03:59.71\00:04:02.60 Medication overuse... 00:04:02.63\00:04:04.25 And if you think about it, there are other flaws 00:04:04.28\00:04:07.64 in the systems as well. 00:04:07.67\00:04:09.35 Now we have an "American Cancer Society" 00:04:09.38\00:04:11.75 We have an American Society to help heart disease... 00:04:11.78\00:04:16.49 But I'm suggesting maybe we need an American Society for 00:04:16.52\00:04:19.24 the Responsible Use of Medications! YES 00:04:19.27\00:04:21.97 With that in mind, that's why I wrote the book, 00:04:22.00\00:04:24.24 "Medicines That Kill" 00:04:24.27\00:04:25.52 so we could be AWARE that there's a problem. 00:04:25.55\00:04:28.21 A lot of people aren't aware that there's a problem. 00:04:28.24\00:04:30.69 Now I'm not saying that there's not a place for medications, 00:04:30.72\00:04:34.08 but I think we've created a problem. 00:04:34.11\00:04:36.74 And in this book, I argue that the #1 cause of death 00:04:36.77\00:04:40.24 last year, if you added up from all the different causes, 00:04:40.27\00:04:44.94 whether it be from people not taking the medicines right, 00:04:44.97\00:04:48.20 and adverse reaction, overdoses, 00:04:48.23\00:04:52.38 foreign lands not putting the active ingredient in it, 00:04:52.41\00:04:55.37 doctors and nurses making mistakes, 00:04:55.40\00:04:57.74 patients making mistakes - taking pills at the wrong time 00:04:57.77\00:05:01.64 for different medical conditions, 00:05:01.67\00:05:03.49 that it would add up to be the #1 cause 00:05:03.52\00:05:05.55 of death in America. Scary huh? 00:05:05.59\00:05:08.50 So here we are, dumping the #1 cause of death in America 00:05:08.54\00:05:11.68 down our throats, as a regular basis... 00:05:11.71\00:05:14.39 You make a case so often on this program that it is not 00:05:14.42\00:05:18.83 the medicines that cure us, 00:05:18.86\00:05:20.27 it is the changes in our lifestyle and the changes 00:05:20.30\00:05:23.33 that we've been reading about knowingly by the 00:05:23.36\00:05:25.76 things that we do. 00:05:25.79\00:05:27.04 Where are we going with this thing? 00:05:27.07\00:05:28.78 How can we make the transition then from depending 00:05:28.81\00:05:31.17 on medicines to depending on 00:05:31.20\00:05:32.69 what God had in mind for us to begin with? 00:05:32.72\00:05:34.47 Well, I think the first is to realize that there's a problem. 00:05:34.50\00:05:38.27 You know, and for everyone out there, I hope that they realize 00:05:38.30\00:05:40.29 that this is a problem and if 00:05:40.32\00:05:41.49 you're on a medication, I would ask yourself... 00:05:41.52\00:05:44.05 "Do I need to be on this medication?" 00:05:44.08\00:05:46.13 "Is there anything else I can do to change my 00:05:46.16\00:05:48.97 physiology, so I don't have to be on the medicine?" 00:05:49.00\00:05:51.02 That's it! Is there anything else I can do... 00:05:51.05\00:05:52.83 And you have told us time and time again on this program 00:05:52.86\00:05:55.12 that there usually is, 95% of the time 00:05:55.15\00:05:58.02 there's something else we can do. 00:05:58.05\00:05:59.16 I had a patient, Charles, that came not too long ago, 00:05:59.19\00:06:02.57 and she came to me because of chest pain. 00:06:02.60\00:06:04.28 She was in her early 50s... 00:06:04.31\00:06:06.20 And if I weave back through her story, 00:06:06.23\00:06:08.96 it was very interesting. 00:06:08.99\00:06:10.24 She had been an executive secretary that 00:06:10.27\00:06:14.83 needed to wear high heel shoes every day, 00:06:14.86\00:06:17.38 and she wore high heels to work every day, 00:06:17.41\00:06:20.44 and after 20 or 30 years, guess what? 00:06:20.47\00:06:22.58 She had bad foot problems. 00:06:22.61\00:06:24.69 When she had these bad foot problems, 00:06:24.72\00:06:27.17 she had to see a podiatrist; 00:06:27.20\00:06:28.96 he had to do some operations on her and guess what? 00:06:28.99\00:06:32.18 She quit going to the gym, she gained some weight. 00:06:32.21\00:06:35.35 She's now taking some medicines because her 00:06:35.38\00:06:37.40 foot hurt so much, she gained some weight, 00:06:37.43\00:06:39.99 ended up getting diabetes and high blood pressure. 00:06:40.02\00:06:43.05 She couldn't sleep good at night, 00:06:43.08\00:06:44.56 so she took a sleeping pill. 00:06:44.59\00:06:46.30 She noticed more acid in her stomach, 00:06:46.33\00:06:48.42 so she took an acid pill. 00:06:48.45\00:06:50.61 She got a little depressed, so she started 00:06:50.64\00:06:52.80 taking a depression pill and one thing led to another, 00:06:52.83\00:06:57.11 and sooner or later, she came to me because 00:06:57.14\00:06:59.12 of chest pain. 00:06:59.15\00:07:00.57 Well, if you look at the whole situation here, 00:07:00.60\00:07:03.38 you know, one little thing, one stressor 00:07:03.41\00:07:07.29 might have prevented this terrible cascade... 00:07:07.32\00:07:10.05 And I see that sometimes with medications. 00:07:10.08\00:07:12.50 I'll ask a patient, "Well why are you on this medication?" 00:07:12.53\00:07:15.92 And they go, "I don't remember, 00:07:15.95\00:07:17.41 it was started 25 years ago and I don't even know why" 00:07:17.44\00:07:21.53 And everyone is afraid to take it off. 00:07:21.56\00:07:23.25 They're afraid that it was for something important to do! 00:07:23.28\00:07:25.74 And yet, everyone is afraid to take it off. 00:07:25.77\00:07:28.29 And it's very interesting that scenario, 00:07:28.32\00:07:31.15 so I think in understanding this problem of 00:07:31.18\00:07:33.89 medications and how to get off of it, 00:07:33.92\00:07:36.03 I think the first step is to recognize that we have a 00:07:36.06\00:07:39.21 problem as a society. 00:07:39.24\00:07:41.28 The second thing that I think is very important to know 00:07:41.31\00:07:44.88 is that you can do something about it. 00:07:44.91\00:07:48.60 You know, you might have to some research; 00:07:48.63\00:07:51.06 you might have to talk with your physician, 00:07:51.09\00:07:52.96 but there are many medications that you might not need to take. 00:07:52.99\00:07:55.55 You can change your chemistry by doing something else. 00:07:55.58\00:07:59.28 For instance, one of the most common classes of medications 00:07:59.31\00:08:03.23 now are sleeping pills... 00:08:03.26\00:08:04.42 You've heard of those, haven't you? Oh yes 00:08:04.45\00:08:05.93 Now sleeping pills are very common. 00:08:05.96\00:08:07.39 Well, if someone is just not sleeping well 00:08:07.42\00:08:10.09 because they're drinking a Mocha Joe, 00:08:10.12\00:08:12.30 and watching TV at night. 00:08:12.33\00:08:14.01 Maybe they could quit doing that and be off that medication. 00:08:14.04\00:08:16.74 A lot of people, as we saw here, 00:08:16.77\00:08:19.33 a lot of people are on pain pills. 00:08:19.36\00:08:22.18 Well maybe if we could find out what's causing the pain, 00:08:22.21\00:08:24.94 maybe some physical therapy, maybe some exercising, 00:08:24.97\00:08:28.16 maybe to fix something wrong, 00:08:28.19\00:08:29.66 maybe they don't have to take that THE REST OF THEIR LIVES. 00:08:29.69\00:08:32.86 Maybe if we could find the real cause of depression, 00:08:32.89\00:08:35.61 is it nutrition? is it vitamin D? 00:08:35.64\00:08:37.79 is it situational depression? 00:08:37.82\00:08:40.43 Maybe they could find out what is causing depression, 00:08:40.46\00:08:42.61 and they might not have to be on THAT the rest of their life. 00:08:42.64\00:08:45.32 What about blood pressure? 00:08:45.35\00:08:46.85 Well maybe if they start to exercise, 00:08:46.88\00:08:48.51 and eat a little bit better, maybe they don't have to 00:08:48.54\00:08:50.76 be on a blood pressure medicine. 00:08:50.79\00:08:51.98 Or one for diabetes for the REST OF THEIR LIFE. 00:08:52.01\00:08:54.69 So I think you can see here, if people are willing 00:08:54.72\00:08:57.14 to make some changes on their own, 00:08:57.17\00:08:59.25 they can change their chemistry. 00:08:59.28\00:09:01.03 I tell people, "When you exercise, 00:09:01.06\00:09:03.58 it changes the chemistry of the entire body. 00:09:03.61\00:09:06.26 When you eat right, the chemistry of the entire body 00:09:06.29\00:09:09.72 When you rest well, the chemistry of the entire body 00:09:09.75\00:09:13.54 When you think right and your happy, 00:09:13.57\00:09:15.73 the chemistry of the entire body... 00:09:15.76\00:09:17.66 But the chemistry that we did these medications, 00:09:17.69\00:09:21.20 usually just change 1 or 2 chemical pathways. 00:09:21.23\00:09:24.28 It doesn't affect the whole body for the good. 00:09:24.31\00:09:26.90 So, how would you want to change your chemistry? 00:09:26.93\00:09:30.17 I'm going to have that more universal approach to it 00:09:30.20\00:09:33.41 because everything we do... 00:09:33.45\00:09:35.12 We're only here for, you know, 4 score and 10 years, 00:09:35.16\00:09:37.24 whatever it is we live. 00:09:37.27\00:09:38.81 We want to make sure that everything we do is 00:09:38.84\00:09:41.06 good for the whole body and we want to help our heart, 00:09:41.09\00:09:44.52 when we help our liver, when we help our kidney, 00:09:44.56\00:09:46.23 and when we help our stomach - we want to make sure that 00:09:46.27\00:09:48.05 we do that from a universal way. 00:09:48.09\00:09:49.71 WHAT ARE SOME OF THE UNIVERSAL TOOLS 00:09:49.74\00:09:53.03 you're talking about here that we should be doing 00:09:53.06\00:09:55.00 INSTEAD of taking all these medicines? 00:09:55.03\00:09:56.75 Yeah, and first you have to talk with your doctor 00:09:56.78\00:09:59.50 to see exactly why you're on 00:09:59.53\00:10:00.99 the medication - because THAT'S the Key 00:10:01.03\00:10:02.71 is understanding WHY you're on the medication. 00:10:02.75\00:10:05.17 Why were you put on it in the first place? That's the key! 00:10:05.20\00:10:08.37 And then, once you understand why, working with your provider, 00:10:08.40\00:10:12.61 to come up with a plan. 00:10:12.64\00:10:13.72 Is there some things that you can do NATURALLY 00:10:13.75\00:10:16.25 to maybe not need it? 00:10:16.28\00:10:17.35 Can you exercise more? Can you eat better? 00:10:17.38\00:10:19.77 Can you be done with this infection 00:10:19.80\00:10:22.18 you know, or do you have to take it. 00:10:22.22\00:10:23.57 Some of the medicines are just written because 00:10:23.61\00:10:25.40 no one is willing to stop it! 00:10:25.43\00:10:27.66 There's no even reason for it. 00:10:27.69\00:10:29.11 One of the most things, when I talk to people like 00:10:29.14\00:10:31.04 Dr. Hans Diehl, with the CHIP Program... 00:10:31.07\00:10:32.69 When I talk to people that live in institutions, 00:10:32.72\00:10:35.09 what they discover is, when people make these changes, 00:10:35.12\00:10:39.65 the medicine load drops off. 00:10:39.68\00:10:41.82 I mean, it's just - they start, don't need that anymore, 00:10:41.85\00:10:44.95 don't need that anymore, don't need that anymore, 00:10:44.98\00:10:46.51 so there is proof of what you're saying here, 00:10:46.54\00:10:48.98 so many times... 00:10:49.01\00:10:50.19 WHY don't we want to do that? 00:10:50.22\00:10:52.37 Why is it so hard for us to say, 00:10:52.40\00:10:53.95 "Okay, I'm eating wrong or I'm not exercising enough. " 00:10:53.98\00:10:57.43 I can do that or I can take the pill... 00:10:57.46\00:10:59.79 TOO MANY PEOPLE, according to your statistics here 00:10:59.82\00:11:02.84 are taking the pills instead of doing these changes. 00:11:02.87\00:11:05.03 Why is it so hard to do that? 00:11:05.06\00:11:06.25 Yeah, and they look at this number 70%, 00:11:06.28\00:11:09.88 that's a failing grade. YEAH! 00:11:09.91\00:11:11.42 That's 70% of the people who are refusing 00:11:11.45\00:11:14.25 to make the lifestyle changes, 00:11:14.28\00:11:15.54 and want to use the medicine instead to fix the problem. 00:11:15.57\00:11:17.43 Part of it is that and part of it is their culture. 00:11:17.46\00:11:19.99 You know, it's easier to give a medicine... 00:11:20.02\00:11:22.12 As a doctor, it's easier to give a medicine, 00:11:22.15\00:11:24.09 rather than to counsel them and to make them responsible 00:11:24.12\00:11:26.85 and teach them how to do things. 00:11:26.88\00:11:28.46 As a patient, it's easier to just take medicine 00:11:28.49\00:11:31.41 rather than to make the lifestyle changes 00:11:31.44\00:11:33.80 that can change your whole chemistry for the good. 00:11:33.83\00:11:36.38 It's just, you know, for a lot of our sake, it's easier. 00:11:36.41\00:11:39.20 Now it's not this way everywhere in the world. 00:11:39.23\00:11:42.60 But in our country, 7 out of 10 people are taking medicines. 00:11:42.63\00:11:45.75 Well now, you just said something that's very important. 00:11:46.43\00:11:49.42 Are there places in the world where we can go see examples 00:11:49.45\00:11:53.47 of this very thing - where people are NOT depending 00:11:53.50\00:11:56.17 on medicines so much, where these 00:11:56.20\00:11:58.34 lifestyle diseases don't exist. 00:11:58.37\00:11:59.47 If we can find those places, we should study them 00:11:59.51\00:12:02.08 to find out what they're doing 00:12:02.11\00:12:03.34 differently... Has that been done? 00:12:03.38\00:12:04.66 Yes, they have done that and they've gone to different 00:12:04.70\00:12:07.15 islands like Okinawa and different rural areas 00:12:07.18\00:12:10.63 where they didn't have all this... and guess what? 00:12:10.66\00:12:13.11 Those people don't have the chronic diseases. 00:12:13.14\00:12:15.61 Now a lot of the medicines we are on, are to treat symptoms. 00:12:15.64\00:12:19.76 They're not to treat causes. 00:12:19.79\00:12:21.16 And symptoms of chronic diseases. Exactly! 00:12:21.19\00:12:23.64 So the problem is the chronic diseases. 00:12:23.67\00:12:27.35 And we talk about, well the chronic diseases, 00:12:27.38\00:12:29.88 where does THAT come from? 00:12:29.91\00:12:31.32 And the chronic diseases come from our lifestyle, 00:12:31.35\00:12:33.99 the stress we're under as we've 00:12:34.02\00:12:35.85 moved away from God's perfect plan. 00:12:35.88\00:12:38.68 It's put more stress on the body. 00:12:38.71\00:12:41.00 People want solutions for that stress, 00:12:41.03\00:12:43.79 so they look instead of biblical solutions, 00:12:43.82\00:12:46.49 sometimes they look for just temporary solutions 00:12:46.52\00:12:49.05 just help me numb the pain, 00:12:49.08\00:12:50.65 just help me go to sleep, 00:12:50.68\00:12:52.09 just help me get the acid out of my stomach... 00:12:52.12\00:12:54.71 Whatever that might BE... 00:12:54.74\00:12:56.27 And people will do that and they think it's the 00:12:56.30\00:12:59.74 right thing to do because their doctor told me to do this. 00:12:59.77\00:13:02.68 You know, the news... I saw a commercial, 00:13:02.71\00:13:05.13 the commercial SAYS - "If I want this, 00:13:05.16\00:13:07.09 I'M GOING TO DO THIS! 00:13:07.12\00:13:08.38 If I can't do this, I'm going to do this! 00:13:08.41\00:13:10.60 And it's sort of the advertising, the marketing 00:13:10.63\00:13:13.42 in our society has created the place we're in today. 00:13:13.45\00:13:16.27 So 70% in this Mayo Clinic article, in my opinion, 00:13:16.30\00:13:20.55 is a failing grade. 00:13:20.58\00:13:21.98 Well, we need to do something about that 00:13:22.01\00:13:23.72 not only in our country, but also in our own lives, 00:13:23.75\00:13:26.39 and we're going to talk about what we can do 00:13:26.42\00:13:27.94 by answering some of YOUR questions 00:13:27.97\00:13:29.33 that have been sent into heartwiseministries. org 00:13:29.36\00:13:31.77 We invite you to do that and we answer your questions 00:13:31.80\00:13:34.10 here on the program, also on our radio program... 00:13:34.13\00:13:36.26 heartwiseministries. org 00:13:36.29\00:13:37.98 There's a place to click for your question. 00:13:38.01\00:13:39.51 Put them there and we will certainly ask them on the show. 00:13:39.54\00:13:42.42 We will return with your questions in just a moment, 00:13:42.45\00:13:45.32 so stay right where you are. 00:13:45.35\00:13:47.37
