Today, we're talking about screening, 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.31 and Dr. Marcum, you've made it clear that there are 00:00:02.34\00:00:04.99 some things we should be screened for, 00:00:05.02\00:00:06.74 and some things that are really not necessary. 00:00:06.77\00:00:09.14 Review that for us again... 00:00:09.17\00:00:10.69 And I want to make this very, very practical for people 00:00:10.72\00:00:14.02 so when you leave here you'll have at least 1 or 2 things 00:00:14.05\00:00:17.09 that you can actually know and apply to your life today. 00:00:17.12\00:00:20.68 We want to give you something with value. 00:00:20.71\00:00:23.19 Not only that, something you can take to your friends, 00:00:23.22\00:00:25.40 and talk to other people very intelligently about it. 00:00:25.43\00:00:28.08 The first thing is - in screenings, 00:00:28.11\00:00:30.56 realize that one size does not fit all. 00:00:30.59\00:00:34.40 It's according to your risks. 00:00:34.43\00:00:36.74 And the basic things that should be screened for, 00:00:36.77\00:00:39.06 the safety things, ABSOLUTELY! 00:00:39.09\00:00:41.58 We talked about skin cancer, ABSOLUTELY! 00:00:41.61\00:00:44.87 If you're in a high risk group, YES, you might even be screened 00:00:44.90\00:00:47.96 for something that's not recommended 00:00:47.99\00:00:49.57 if you've had a family history of it. 00:00:49.60\00:00:52.08 We talked about prostate testing, 00:00:52.11\00:00:55.24 probably NOT, unless you're in a high risk group... 00:00:55.27\00:00:58.14 But you know, that's very individual. 00:00:58.17\00:01:00.20 We talked about colon cancer, YES, but it's not necessarily 00:01:00.23\00:01:03.91 always with a colonoscopy. 00:01:03.94\00:01:06.21 We talked about lung cancer, 00:01:06.24\00:01:07.93 that's probably a NO. 00:01:07.97\00:01:09.26 But if you're a smoker... Yes, absolutely! 00:01:09.29\00:01:11.27 That's why all size does not fit all. 00:01:11.95\00:01:14.06 Now we talked about skin cancer. 00:01:14.09\00:01:16.64 But we've also talked about all the fear 00:01:16.67\00:01:18.98 that comes from all these tests! Yes, yes, yes 00:01:19.01\00:01:21.75 Have you ever seen those tests that go by... 00:01:21.78\00:01:24.10 And they'll go by a church or somewhere, 00:01:24.13\00:01:26.11 and they'll look at all your blood vessels. Yes 00:01:26.14\00:01:28.93 Well sometimes that scares people so to death, 00:01:28.96\00:01:30.92 I get them running in and say, "Oh, I got an aneurysm, 00:01:30.95\00:01:32.80 I got this, I got that" 00:01:32.83\00:01:34.03 You know, it just scares them, and so that's why 00:01:34.06\00:01:37.33 we wanted to talk to people 00:01:37.36\00:01:38.48 about the different screening test for that. 00:01:38.51\00:01:41.21 Now, a couple of ones we haven't talked about... 00:01:41.24\00:01:43.91 for female - very important. 00:01:43.94\00:01:45.82 That's Pap smears - that's screening for cervical cancer. 00:01:45.85\00:01:52.09 And they're recommending those to lower the risk of cervical 00:01:52.12\00:01:54.99 that we screen every 3 years in women after age 21 00:01:55.02\00:02:00.21 Now if the results of that smear are negative, 00:02:00.24\00:02:03.84 they check it every year until age 65. 00:02:03.87\00:02:08.42 And here's an interesting statistic 00:02:08.45\00:02:10.99 that I want to share with everyone... 00:02:11.02\00:02:12.43 Half the women who die of cervical cancer, 00:02:12.46\00:02:16.05 one-half never had a Pap smear ever, 00:02:16.08\00:02:19.15 and 90% of those had not had one in 10 years. 00:02:19.18\00:02:23.29 So this is another thing that is preventable if caught early. 00:02:23.32\00:02:27.23 Notice in cancers - we're not saying that the treatment 00:02:27.26\00:02:30.34 is the thing that fixes it, but catching it early, 00:02:30.37\00:02:33.01 getting rid of it, dealing with it before it becomes 00:02:33.04\00:02:35.72 spread out of place. 00:02:35.75\00:02:37.63 Now another one is mammograms. 00:02:37.66\00:02:39.86 You know, getting the breasts checked on women. 00:02:39.89\00:02:42.60 Now, if you are a high risk group, 00:02:42.63\00:02:44.75 if someone in your family has had breast cancer, 00:02:44.78\00:02:47.32 you'll want to get it screened even more vigilantly. 00:02:47.35\00:02:50.24 They screen it with breast self-exams; 00:02:50.27\00:02:53.16 they screen it with mammograms, and the debate continues... 00:02:53.19\00:02:57.40 But the party line right now is the current 00:02:57.43\00:03:00.80 screening recommendations is annual screenings... 00:03:00.83\00:03:03.63 That means every year for women over 40 years old. 00:03:03.66\00:03:08.16 Now that's without a breast cancer history, family history, 00:03:08.19\00:03:11.99 no obesity or cigarette use, 00:03:12.02\00:03:13.94 it's even more reason to wait until a baseline at 40, 00:03:13.97\00:03:17.47 but if you have those red flags, 00:03:17.50\00:03:19.83 you might get screened earlier, I think we've talked about that. 00:03:19.86\00:03:22.95 Now after the age of 70, no screening is suggested. 00:03:22.98\00:03:27.97 You know, now if you ever see a mass or anything at any time, 00:03:28.00\00:03:31.97 you need to get that evaluated immediately. 00:03:32.00\00:03:35.30 Now are there risks for mammograms? 00:03:35.33\00:03:37.11 Yes, there is some small risk of that, 00:03:37.14\00:03:38.80 and everything is about the risks versus the benefits. 00:03:38.83\00:03:41.59 Mammograms do emit a little bit of radiation. 00:03:41.62\00:03:45.33 And another hot topic is breast cancer genetic screening. 00:03:45.36\00:03:50.47 You know, and people that are high risk, 00:03:50.50\00:03:51.93 should they have the genetic, saying, "Listen you're going 00:03:51.96\00:03:54.33 to get it later in life - should we do something early on 00:03:54.36\00:03:57.23 to lower your risk even greater. 00:03:57.26\00:03:59.45 And I think that's going to be the future in some of these 00:03:59.48\00:04:01.73 cancers - is look at our genetics and see who is 00:04:01.76\00:04:04.55 more susceptible than others. 00:04:04.58\00:04:06.79 But in talking about all this, the bottom line is 00:04:06.82\00:04:10.27 when it comes to screenings are screenings are just guidelines. 00:04:10.30\00:04:14.82 One size does not fit all and you have to 00:04:14.85\00:04:17.89 learn about it itself - what works for you 00:04:17.92\00:04:20.64 based on your whole health history. 00:04:20.67\00:04:22.97 But for sure, I want everyone to be proactive about the 00:04:23.00\00:04:26.57 simple things to do. 00:04:26.60\00:04:28.28 How about screening for happiness? 00:04:28.31\00:04:30.15 For mental health? For exercise? 00:04:30.18\00:04:31.91 For eating well? 00:04:31.94\00:04:33.01 And all of those things affect the other parts too. YES, YES! 00:04:33.04\00:04:36.60 All right! And it's sort of a skewed 00:04:36.63\00:04:38.45 thing that we get into, Charles... 00:04:38.48\00:04:39.75 In other words, if you are a real angry vegetarian, 00:04:39.78\00:04:41.94 there's going to be a problem there. Exactly! 00:04:41.97\00:04:44.02 But think about the world that we've created... 00:04:44.05\00:04:46.03 We screen for all these scary things and things that are 00:04:46.06\00:04:49.50 important to talk about and deal with, 00:04:49.53\00:04:52.55 at early ages, we don't talk about. 00:04:52.58\00:04:55.05 Like, Charles, did you talk to somebody today? Yes I did. 00:04:55.08\00:04:58.30 You know, Charles, screen for mental health, for happiness, 00:04:58.33\00:05:02.67 for exercise... Did you get out and move the parts? 00:05:02.70\00:05:05.61 Did you screen for certain nutrients, like vitamin D? 00:05:05.64\00:05:08.90 All of those things are just if not MORE important, 00:05:08.93\00:05:12.89 than all these scary cancer screenings that we get into... 00:05:12.92\00:05:15.89 Not that they're not important, 00:05:15.92\00:05:17.38 but we have to screen for all sorts of health things, 00:05:17.41\00:05:19.90 and that's why I'm glad people are watching this program today 00:05:19.93\00:05:22.86 because I want them to look at their health, 00:05:22.89\00:05:24.73 and screen for these things; 00:05:24.76\00:05:26.21 things that we put in our body; 00:05:26.24\00:05:28.01 things that we think in our brain, 00:05:28.04\00:05:30.20 and also screen for your relationships. 00:05:30.23\00:05:32.79 Is your relationships healthy with each other? 00:05:32.82\00:05:34.95 Are they healthy with God? 00:05:34.98\00:05:36.78 And what are the little things that I can do 00:05:36.81\00:05:39.14 to get better at all of this? 00:05:39.17\00:05:40.94 This is all part of screening health! 00:05:40.97\00:05:42.85 This makes us part of the process, 00:05:42.88\00:05:44.66 and that's what is so exciting about that, 00:05:44.69\00:05:46.25 that there are things that we can do in our lives, 00:05:46.28\00:05:49.10 in our day to day existence. 00:05:49.13\00:05:50.49 It's almost like prescreening. 00:05:50.52\00:05:52.17 We are screening the screening! 00:05:52.20\00:05:53.67 We are getting ready to know what we need to screen for 00:05:53.70\00:05:56.84 by our lifestyle choices. 00:05:56.87\00:05:58.13 Yeah, and your doctor really should be a coach. 00:05:58.16\00:06:00.55 You know, he's coaching the team and we're all on team to 00:06:00.58\00:06:04.32 get to heaven to be with God, to help other people get there, 00:06:04.35\00:06:07.64 to be loving and happy. 00:06:07.67\00:06:08.75 We're all on the same team. 00:06:08.78\00:06:10.04 We all have the same goal and the coach should be there 00:06:10.07\00:06:12.43 helping you at every different aspect of your life, 00:06:12.46\00:06:15.07 including the ones we talked about, 00:06:15.10\00:06:17.22 but not being so fearful that we forget some of the other 00:06:17.25\00:06:20.23 even more important screening. 00:06:20.26\00:06:21.55 How about - you know some doctors won't even mention 00:06:21.58\00:06:24.23 if someone carries a little extra weight, 00:06:24.26\00:06:25.97 you know, they won't even mention it anymore, 00:06:26.00\00:06:27.79 but you gotta mention that if you love somebody 00:06:27.82\00:06:30.87 ...I call it "tough love," Charles! 00:06:30.90\00:06:32.68 Do you ever give any tough love to anybody? 00:06:32.71\00:06:34.79 Sometimes I have to do that, yes, 00:06:34.82\00:06:36.46 and I've been the recipient of tough love, 00:06:36.49\00:06:38.79 and it's really - when you stop and think about it, 00:06:38.82\00:06:41.10 and you look back at it, it was a good idea 00:06:41.13\00:06:43.28 that that tough love came along. 00:06:43.31\00:06:44.56 You know and I tell people sometimes... 00:06:44.59\00:06:46.26 you know, "I love you enough to tell you this" 00:06:46.29\00:06:48.99 "I know you don't want to hear it" 00:06:49.02\00:06:50.39 You love me enough to tell me this - I don't want to hear it! 00:06:50.42\00:06:53.32 It works both ways, but in a good relationship 00:06:53.35\00:06:56.36 that's the way it should do. 00:06:56.39\00:06:57.65 Hey! Do we have some questions that have come in? We DO from 00:06:57.68\00:06:59.44 heartwiseministries. org is the website 00:06:59.47\00:07:01.78 I want to invite our viewers, if you want to be part of 00:07:01.81\00:07:04.08 this program, you go to heartwiseministries. org 00:07:04.11\00:07:06.99 and leave a question and we will address them here 00:07:07.02\00:07:09.15 like we're doing right here. 00:07:09.18\00:07:10.66 All right, here is the first question! 00:07:10.69\00:07:11.99 This is on the topic of screenings. 00:07:12.02\00:07:13.83 "My dad died from colon cancer at age 47, 00:07:13.86\00:07:17.34 when should I be screened?" 00:07:17.37\00:07:19.66 His dad died at 47... 00:07:19.69\00:07:21.35 I think this brings up a couple of points that we had before. 00:07:21.38\00:07:24.61 Unfortunately, genetic things run in families, 00:07:24.64\00:07:27.57 and that's why doctors do a 00:07:27.60\00:07:28.92 careful genetic history of people. 00:07:28.95\00:07:31.58 If your dad had it at 47, I would at least 00:07:31.61\00:07:35.58 start your first, and this one I would do the big screen, 00:07:35.61\00:07:38.26 the colonoscopy. 00:07:38.29\00:07:39.38 I would start that at age 37, 10 years before, I would get it. 00:07:39.41\00:07:44.08 And if you've missed that date, 00:07:44.11\00:07:45.51 I would run in as soon as I could get that. 00:07:45.54\00:07:48.07 You know, I love answering people's questions, Charles, 00:07:48.10\00:07:51.92 because that's where we sort of develop relationships 00:07:51.95\00:07:54.92 This program helps meet their needs when we do that. 00:07:54.95\00:07:58.20 A lot of programs don't meet people's needs, 00:07:58.23\00:08:01.25 but it always lets us be in touch with people. 00:08:01.28\00:08:03.93 People are scared of these things and they're CONCERNED, 00:08:03.96\00:08:06.54 but that's what I would do for this gentleman... 00:08:06.57\00:08:08.65 I would check it at age 37 and this one, 00:08:08.68\00:08:11.92 I would do the big colonoscopy. 00:08:11.95\00:08:13.73 Now if he was 55 years old and never had any colon cancer 00:08:13.76\00:08:18.23 that eat a healthy fiber-filled diet, 00:08:18.26\00:08:20.27 I might just go with the 3 guaiac cards. 00:08:20.30\00:08:23.21 If it was that situation, but it's not that situation. 00:08:23.24\00:08:26.14 I mean, genetics is not a guarantee that you're 00:08:26.17\00:08:28.61 going to get this problem... No, it's not, 00:08:28.64\00:08:29.90 but you know what, if they find a precancerous 00:08:29.93\00:08:32.71 polyp in your colon at an early age, they can remove it, 00:08:32.74\00:08:36.58 and the cancer is gone! All right, okay 00:08:36.61\00:08:38.26 They'll screen for it again in another 5 years. 00:08:38.29\00:08:40.43 Here's another question from heartwiseministries. org 00:08:40.46\00:08:44.38 "My mammogram was abnormal and a biopsy was recommended, 00:08:44.41\00:08:47.85 is this standard procedure?" 00:08:47.88\00:08:49.65 If a mammogram is abnormal, biopsy automatically? 00:08:49.68\00:08:54.47 Yeah, again we're talking about the risk of breast cancer. 00:08:54.50\00:08:58.23 And some of the greatest improvements 00:08:58.26\00:09:01.92 in breast cancer is early detection. 00:09:01.95\00:09:04.18 Absolutely! If you feel a funny mass, 00:09:04.21\00:09:07.09 if you have a mammogram that doesn't pick up something, 00:09:07.12\00:09:09.56 I would have a biopsy - get a definitive diagnosis. 00:09:09.59\00:09:12.56 It might be negative, but this is one 00:09:12.59\00:09:15.57 you do not want to miss because if cancer spreads, 00:09:15.60\00:09:18.76 it's much harder to deal with it as if it's just in one site. 00:09:18.79\00:09:22.36 So cancer is something that's very serious, 00:09:22.39\00:09:26.17 yet we're so afraid of it, when we shouldn't be afraid of it. 00:09:26.20\00:09:29.56 How do we know when we should be afraid of it? 00:09:29.59\00:09:31.96 I like the word "concerned" 00:09:31.99\00:09:34.02 We want to detect it early if we can, 00:09:34.05\00:09:36.52 but then it - also in our lives, we want to do things 00:09:36.55\00:09:39.67 that lower our risk of getting cancer too. 00:09:39.70\00:09:42.53 We want to lower our risk of all of these health problems. 00:09:42.56\00:09:45.22 You know, whether it be eating a fiber-filled diet, 00:09:45.25\00:09:47.50 not staying out in the sun for skin cancer, 00:09:47.53\00:09:49.97 not carrying extra weight. 00:09:50.00\00:09:51.62 That's that prescreening you were talking about. Yes 00:09:51.65\00:09:52.84 That's not carrying extra weight for breast cancer. 00:09:52.87\00:09:56.17 All those things that will lower our risk... 00:09:56.20\00:09:58.26 Not smoking cigarettes for certain types of cancer. 00:09:58.29\00:10:00.71 We want to do that, as well as to screen 00:10:00.74\00:10:02.72 and to see if we've got some bad genetics as well. 00:10:02.75\00:10:05.11 So a good screening program does both. 00:10:05.14\00:10:07.51 It prevents - as well as it detects early. 00:10:07.54\00:10:10.12 Okay, another question from heartwiseministries. org 00:10:10.15\00:10:13.42 "Skin cancer is a concern for me; 00:10:13.45\00:10:16.21 Oh boy... are tanning beds dangerous to your skin?" 00:10:16.24\00:10:20.78 I've heard people talk about this... tanning beds. 00:10:20.81\00:10:23.49 You've heard people talk about TALK about this? Yes, I have. 00:10:23.52\00:10:25.12 Can I ask you who you've heard talk about this? 00:10:25.87\00:10:28.54 Friends and neighbors - people that look very, NOT me 00:10:28.57\00:10:31.79 Do they have nice tans? No... YEAH they do! 00:10:31.82\00:10:33.60 They look good... it was not me! 00:10:33.63\00:10:35.59 It was not me, I've never been in one, so I wouldn't know. 00:10:35.62\00:10:38.53 Tanning beds is a NO, is a no... Really? 00:10:38.56\00:10:40.96 Yeah, it' just a no - it damages your skin. You LOOK good! 00:10:40.99\00:10:44.62 You look good, but it damages your skin; 00:10:45.57\00:10:47.89 it raises the chance of you having cancers. 00:10:47.92\00:10:50.40 We can't recommend tanning beds, they are dangerous. 00:10:50.43\00:10:53.46 In fact, even being out in the sun, where you burn too much, 00:10:53.49\00:10:56.58 that's going to raise your chance, over a lifetime, 00:10:56.61\00:10:59.78 of skin cancer. 00:10:59.81\00:11:01.28 And notice, most of these exposures, 00:11:01.31\00:11:03.88 for long periods of time, exposures to extra weight, 00:11:03.91\00:11:07.08 exposure to cigarettes, exposure to bad diets... 00:11:07.11\00:11:10.09 It doesn't happen usually right away, 00:11:10.12\00:11:11.85 over years and years and years, and then eventually 00:11:11.88\00:11:15.17 the malignant cells start to show up and start to divide. 00:11:15.20\00:11:17.84 In other words, if somebody wanted to look good 00:11:17.87\00:11:19.37 on their wedding day, and they went into a 00:11:19.40\00:11:21.43 tanning bed so they'd look really good marching 00:11:21.46\00:11:23.39 down the aisle and they looked all tanned and everything. 00:11:23.42\00:11:25.13 They did that one time - 00:11:25.16\00:11:26.19 that's not going to be a concern? 00:11:26.22\00:11:27.76 Is that what you did, Charles? NO! This is not ME 00:11:27.79\00:11:31.18 we're talking about... Okay, not you 00:11:31.21\00:11:32.58 No, it probably in the great scheme of things, 00:11:32.61\00:11:36.61 it probably wouldn't make THAT big of a deal, 00:11:36.64\00:11:38.38 but it's still better if you didn't do it. 00:11:38.41\00:11:40.32 It would be better if you just get a little sun everyday, 00:11:40.35\00:11:43.70 get outside, be the healthy, that kind of things, 00:11:43.73\00:11:46.46 but I think in talking about screenings today, 00:11:46.49\00:11:49.10 we want to let people know 2 things, Charles... 00:11:49.13\00:11:51.48 #1... is that screening doesn't fit all. 00:11:51.51\00:11:54.62 #2... Try not to be scared of screenings; 00:11:54.65\00:11:57.31 detect things early on, and then make sure 00:11:57.34\00:12:00.98 in the addition to the screenings, 00:12:01.01\00:12:02.30 you're doing things so you prevent the things that the 00:12:02.33\00:12:05.35 screenings might be used for, does that make sense? 00:12:05.38\00:12:07.82 It does, it certainly does... Now that was not very well 00:12:07.85\00:12:09.30 articulated... That was fine 00:12:09.33\00:12:10.81 I'm still wondering whether you're hiding a 00:12:10.84\00:12:12.66 tanning bed from me. I am NOT hiding anything... 00:12:12.69\00:12:15.23 A tanning bed at your house! Oh no, now I got so embarrassed. 00:12:15.26\00:12:19.89 Now I'm all red, as said... You're tanned! 00:12:19.92\00:12:23.29 There you go! If you want to look good, 00:12:23.32\00:12:25.43 just talk to him for a while. Well, we're almost out of time. 00:12:25.46\00:12:28.70 Just talk to him for a while and you'll have a 00:12:28.73\00:12:30.17 nice, rosy, glow. 00:12:30.20\00:12:31.32 When we come back, Dr. Marcum has some 00:12:31.35\00:12:33.64 final words for us and we'll also go to the Master Physician, 00:12:33.67\00:12:36.48 the Ultimate Physician and we'll talk to Him about 00:12:36.51\00:12:39.49 your needs, our needs and the needs of this world, 00:12:39.52\00:12:41.76 so stay right where you are. 00:12:41.79\00:12:42.86 There are 2 things that I would want to leave with you today 00:12:56.38\00:12:59.80 regarding screenings. 00:12:59.83\00:13:01.70 #1... Think about it, think about what in my life 00:13:01.73\00:13:05.81 should I have screened. 00:13:05.84\00:13:06.87 Of course, we talked about cancer, 00:13:06.90\00:13:08.75 but think about all of those other things 00:13:08.78\00:13:11.05 that you need to have screening. 00:13:11.08\00:13:12.84 And #2, if you have a loved one or a friend, 00:13:12.87\00:13:15.49 talk to them about how they can have better health as well. 00:13:15.52\00:13:19.15 Let me pray with you... 00:13:19.18\00:13:20.21 Father God, I just want to thank each person here 00:13:20.24\00:13:23.58 and invite them to have the best health, Father, 00:13:23.61\00:13:26.05 and please go with them and be a part of their 00:13:26.08\00:13:28.41 treatment plan... is our prayer, Amen 00:13:28.44\00:13:31.31 I'm glad each one of you join us each week 00:13:31.34\00:13:34.38 on the Ultimate Prescription, where we try to reach 00:13:34.41\00:13:37.32 your needs, give one or two things that you can take 00:13:37.35\00:13:39.89 and remember - this is a program that you can take 00:13:39.92\00:13:42.31 to your friends and neighbors 00:13:42.34\00:13:43.88 and help THEM come into a relationship with the 00:13:43.91\00:13:46.47 Ultimate Prescription 00:13:46.51\00:13:48.51
