00:01 Welcome back to the program, I'm Charles Mills
00:03 here with Cardiologist Dr. James Marcum, 00:04 he is the founder, director of Heartwise Ministries 00:07 and that is where we get a lot of questions 00:08 about nutrition and all kinds of subjects 00:11 when it comes to health. One of the most important 00:14 things that we need to give you is information. 00:17 Yes! If you will just listen and learn, 00:21 you can be your own best doctor, as Dr. Marcum says often. 00:24 Absolutely, we are our own best physicians so information 00:26 is the key. Now one of questions has to do with 00:29 something I have in my hand, not particularly Almonds 00:31 that I am saying. But here are some Almonds 00:34 here and as you can see, they are uncooked, they are raw 00:38 and they are simply cleaned and put into a container 00:41 and you eat them. 00:42 One of the questions that we get about this is 00:44 why are raw foods important to us as opposed to cooked foods 00:47 or processed foods? Now that's a great question 00:50 and there's a lot of data showing that when we transport 00:55 long, long, like coming from California to the east coast, 01:00 we loose something in the food. Yes! 01:02 And not just in the transportation. 01:03 When we cook foods, we loose some of those vital nutrients 01:07 that are in the foods and Almonds of course are raw, 01:11 they are not cooked, they are not processed 01:13 and we get all the good things with that and with Almonds 01:16 come the Omega 3 fatty acids, the healthy fats are from that. 01:20 So those we know that help the brain function help a lot of 01:23 good things in our body, we don't have to take a pill 01:26 the pill is right there, in fact I put Almonds down regularly. 01:31 So if you were to cook those you might loose some of those 01:34 good things in there. It's like you have a 01:37 five dollar bill and you cook it and it turns into a 01:40 three dollar bill. You want to get the full monetary value 01:43 out of... You want the five bucks out of it. 01:44 You want the five bucks out of it. yeah! 01:46 But also raw foods verses cooked foods, 01:49 there is some literature out there that says if you eat 01:52 half of your food raw, in it's natural state, 01:57 and you want to get it as fresh as you can, 01:59 hopefully from the local field or your own garden, 02:01 that's the best. But no matter what, if you can get that 02:05 and eat half your food raw... the cooked foods tend to 02:08 stimulate your immune system even. 02:10 So there is some data out that that says it stimulates 02:13 your immune system and inflammation and stimulated 02:16 immune system is not so good for the body. 02:18 So if just cooking healthy food does that, 02:20 can you imagine what the processed foods, 02:23 and the things that we are not designed to have, 02:25 what that does to our immune system, it revs it up. 02:28 So Charles we wonder why so many people have 02:31 bowel problems. You know I get a lot of bowel problems 02:35 better when I just get people to stop eating cheese, 02:38 or stop eating animals, or stop eating processed foods. 02:40 You can get the body doing a lot better because the 02:43 immune system doesn't like some of the stuff. 02:45 A lot of people may not realize that of course plants have 02:48 lots of fiber in them. 02:49 How much fiber is in an animal product? 02:52 Zilcho! Zilch, zero. And you know what 02:55 I started eating... and I've learned about this and I 02:58 I hope our viewers can learn more about food, 03:00 there's so much out there, as you learn it really 03:02 empowers you. 03:04 One of the things that I had last night when we went out 03:07 to dinner last night, and I had sea weed. It was wonderful. 03:10 And I've never had sea weed before, but it really made me 03:13 feel good and sea weed is a substance that also 03:17 people said helps you sleep at night. 03:19 The chemicals in sea weed help you sleep, 03:21 and I had a very good night's sleep. So did I. 03:23 So I didn't have to take a sleeping pill, 03:25 I just gave something that God gave us naturally 03:28 to put in there. So I would say the answer to this question... 03:32 It's important to eat raw foods in it's natural states 03:35 and I wish we had more than that and it's important to eat 03:37 more raw if you can and as you do this you will enjoy it. 03:40 I actually eat raw... This is one that a lot of people 03:43 can't do, mustard greens. I will eat raw mustard greens 03:46 and it will clear your sinuses out too. No, it really does. 03:49 It seems to dilate my sinuses, man it brings me alive, 03:53 there is some chemical in that that really does me good, 03:55 not to mention the fiber and the transit time. 03:58 So it lowers my risk of cancer, it opens up my sinuses, 04:02 it does a lot of good things for me when I eat some mustards. 04:06 A lot of people say to me well how in the world can I have 04:08 50% of my diet raw? Well if you eat a salad, 04:12 if you eat fruits, if you eat a banana, an orange, 04:16 an apple. You are getting raw food, that's what that is 04:18 so it's very easy to get 50% of your food from raw sources 04:23 by simply eating that plant based diet and enjoying 04:26 all those fruits and all those wonderful leafy things, 04:29 good stuff, Kale, lettuce, raw. 04:33 Alright, next question from Heartwiseministries.org. 04:36 What is, what's that word? That is spirulina. spirulina. 04:40 What is spirulina? Well a lot of people, 04:43 and I hear this all the time, they say oh if you don't 04:46 eat animals, you don't get enough protein. 04:49 Have you ever heard that before? I have. They say you don't get 04:51 enough protein. That is not the truth at all. 04:54 In fact spirulina is one of these super protein foods, 04:58 and a lot of people are using that, it's sort of a bean 05:02 that came from Mexico, it's one of these new super foods, 05:05 and I wish we would raise more spirulina and less cattle. 05:08 Ok, if we start eating foods like this, learning about it, 05:13 super foods...and there is a great web site that I want 05:15 to tell people about called Food Matters, 05:16 Food Matters, if you can go to that web site, 05:19 it's a great web site that will teach you more about food 05:23 and nutrition about these super foods. 05:25 But there is other things that have lots of protein in them 05:27 that are plant based and it has the good proteins for us 05:30 not the bad proteins. 05:32 Hemp, that is something we can have, Hemp. 05:35 Chia seeds are a great source of protein, 05:38 I don't know if you have heard of that. I have. 05:40 This type of thing called quinoa, 05:42 quinoa, I don't know if you've heard of that, 05:44 they use it to make sort of artificial hamburgers. 05:47 Tempeh, ok, Almonds are a great source of protein. 05:51 Of course everyone has heard of beans, lima beans, 05:55 all sorts of beans, Kale and what's neat about some of 05:59 those vegetable based source of protein is that the 06:03 nutrient composition is correct, they have about the right 06:06 percentage of carbohydrates, the right percentage of fat, 06:09 and the right percentage of protein in the foods you eat. 06:12 So those foods you get plenty of protein what you eat and... 06:15 this is the spirulina, I brought it up because it's one of 06:18 the new super foods you're going to hear about, 06:20 people are putting these smoothies together, 06:23 putting a little of this and that and some of that 06:25 doesn't taste very good, I tried it once, 06:28 but if you can mix it with some other things you can do it. 06:31 But again it is giving you great protein in your body 06:34 it helps you build muscles, and all those good things, 06:37 and that is something that is very important. 06:39 You never lack for food and variety when you go with 06:43 a plant based diet. I hear you saying these things 06:46 and I'm thinking, God knew what He was talking about. 06:48 God figured it out, how nice of Him. 06:51 What is an antioxidant and why are these important, 06:55 and where do you get them? 06:57 Antioxidants, well we have processes in our body 06:59 called oxidation, these are complex chemical reactions 07:02 and I don't want to bore people about the chemistry behind it 07:05 but just remember oxidation is bad and antioxidants 07:09 counteract that process. In our bodies we have these 07:12 the endothelium that we talked about, when it's oxidized 07:15 the free radical formation, all this is bad and antioxidants 07:20 are actually the good guys that stop the bad guys 07:22 from working. Ok! Foods that have antioxidants, 07:25 blueberries is probably the best antioxidant, 07:28 berries have lots of anti- oxidants, they also help fight 07:31 cancers, a lot of these berries, in addition to other diseases 07:34 we don't understand. They seem to help the 07:36 brain health, so antioxidants are very valuable, 07:39 they even say it helps prevent the aging process 07:42 if you eat a lot of these healthy berries. 07:44 So I try to eat a lot of fresh blueberries when I can 07:47 at anytime to have some antioxidants to help these 07:50 free radicals damage in our bodies to prevent some of the 07:53 disease that I am seeing here, it helps a lot of things 07:55 to eat healthy like these antioxidants. 07:58 Now, not the cooked blueberries, or not the ones out of a can 08:01 the fresh healthy blueberries. 08:03 Absolutely, that is very important. 08:04 And there's lots of other foods that have antioxidants in them. 08:07 Little red beans, little red beans about two or three 08:09 years ago knocked blueberries out of the number one spot. 08:11 The little red beans became the number one antioxidant 08:15 food out there not blueberries. 08:17 But I don't eat little red beans. Well the blueberries. 08:19 Where do you get the little red beans at? 08:20 The little red bean store. I don't know either. 08:22 Bob's Red Mills. You must have to get them somewhere. 08:26 Yes, you have to get them... 08:27 They are called little red beans. 08:28 I know you are a big fan of flax. 08:30 Tell our viewers about flax. 08:33 Well for brain health a lot of people say you need to have 08:36 those Omega 3's. Yes. For brain health. 08:39 And flax seeds are filled with it but there is one thing 08:43 you have to know, you just can't take flax and chew on it 08:46 because they are really small and you would have them 08:48 in your teeth and you can't get them to chew up good. 08:49 Put them in a blender, like a coffee maker blender 08:53 don't drink coffee, but put them in a coffee maker blender 08:55 and blend them up and they make a little powder, 08:58 and you put those over your salad or over your 09:00 food in the morning, your cereal and you have that 09:03 wonderful flax flavor as well as some wonderful Omega 3 09:07 fatty acids, just marvelous source. 09:09 Doing that, that means you don't have to have the fish oil 09:12 Omega 3's which I recommend that you do use flax 09:15 instead of the fish oil. Yeah, 09:16 and I said I put it in my Oatmeal. Oatmeal, absolutely. 09:19 And I put some Almonds in that and I throw some blueberries 09:22 in it and I have some pretty good Oatmeal there. 09:24 Now you heard me say Bob's Red Mill, I recommend that 09:26 you go Bob's Red Mill, look it up on the internet 09:28 you can find all kinds of whole foods, whole grains 09:31 and beans and what-not. Love it. 09:33 But the bottom line, I want people to learn about nutrition 09:35 just as much as they learn about their medicines, 09:37 because nutrition can really help treat a lot of disease as 09:41 well as prevent disease. 09:42 And Bob of Bob's Red Mills is a Chip graduate, there you go. 09:45 Ok! What is niacin used for was a question that came in for you? 09:50 What is niacin use for? Ok! Niacin is vitamin B3. 09:55 Ok, Vitamin B3, and this is a substance in our body that 09:59 is very important for a lot of different reactions. 10:02 In fact if you have a deficiency of Niacin you get a condition 10:05 called pellagra, deficiencies in vitamin C, you have heard 10:10 of Scurvy, you know you get a lot of disease if you have 10:12 deficiencies in that. Niacin is very good in helping 10:16 get rid of cholesterol that is built up in our arteries. 10:20 A lot of people say that Niacin can also help mental health 10:24 since some of the chemicals in our brain depend on Niacin. 10:28 So some people are using Niacin to actually help depression and 10:32 brain health. There is a whole fascinating field of nutritional 10:36 as treatments if you look up on the internet this word 10:39 called orthomolecular medicine, orthomolecular medicine. 10:44 That's where they are using different types of fruits, 10:48 vegetables, nuts, and grains to treat different types of 10:50 conditions. Now I am not recommending that as the only 10:56 treatment for disease, but as a concomitant treatment 10:59 for disease I think it's very helpful. 11:01 You see what I am saying. So hypocrisy says for you to do. 11:05 Yeah! So that's... if people are interested orthomolecular 11:09 medicine can help that. 11:11 So Niacin is something that is used for cholesterol, 11:13 it's used for lots of different things, it's a vitamin 11:15 that we need in our bodies. Alright, very good. 11:17 Another question, and this one I get a lot talking to people. 11:21 Should I take a supplement? 11:24 Yeah! It's according... Now if you think about our food 11:28 source through the years we don't have all the minerals 11:30 in our foods. So if you don't eat fresh stuff, 11:33 if you don't think your farms are good, 11:35 then you might want to take a vitamin supplement, 11:37 a regular multivitamin. But if you get lots of fruits, 11:40 vegetable, nuts, and grains from a good source, 11:42 and you don't get outside, you might need vitamin D3. 11:46 If you are pure vegan, some people recommend that you take 11:51 a B vitamin, cause sometimes it is not getting through 11:53 the soil, especially B12. Ok! Alright. Very good! 11:56 I think we have time for a very quick one. 11:58 High doses of vitamin C, yes or no? 12:03 It's according... High doses of vitamin C 12:05 have been helpful to help boost your immune system 12:07 in certain disease conditions it might be helpful. 12:10 But as a general rule, if you are if you are healthy 12:13 you don't need super doses. Alright. Very good. 12:16 Well, if you want more information about this 12:18 there are a number of websites that you can go to 12:20 including heartwiseminintries.org, 12:23 and we hope that you will go there and leave your questions 12:25 for answer on a future program. That's heartwisemininstries.org. 12:30 We'll take a short break and when we come back let's talk 12:32 to the master physician. So stay tuned. 12:45 I hope you've learned something about nutrition today 12:48 and one thing I want you to leave this program with is 12:51 let food be your medicine and let medicine be your food. 12:54 It's something that we can't cover all in a short period 12:57 of time, but there are so many resources that you can go to, 13:00 so many books you can read and I think once you start 13:03 getting interested in the field you will learn more and more 13:06 and more. We've talked a little bit today about the importance 13:09 of eating raw, eating more fruits, vegetables, nuts, 13:13 and grains and how it can change your body's chemistry 13:16 and how some of the illnesses that we've had over the last 13:19 couple hundred years... If you look at the evidence 13:22 it can be traced back to the foods we eat. 13:24 So we want you all to be healthy and we are going to 13:27 have a prayer right now that everyone can get out there and 13:30 do better with the food we eat. 13:31 I know it's hard, you see the supersize, 13:34 you have all the fast food, it's very convenient sometimes 13:37 but once you start eating this way you are going to 13:39 start feeling better, you are going to start learning better, 13:41 you are going to reverse disease, 13:43 and also more importantly, you are going to be 13:45 preventing disease, so let's pray together. 13:47 Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for being with us 13:51 and a God that teaches us new things, 13:53 and we want to feel better and do better. 13:55 Please give us each the power to learn more about all the 13:59 many things we've learned today especially about nutrition 14:02 and how we can have healthier bodies. 14:04 We want healthier bodies so we can serve you better 14:07 so we can go home soon with You and eat from the tree of life. 14:10 This is our prayer, Amen! 14:12 Many of you might have questions, 14:16 we invite you to go to our website, once again that's 14:18 heartwiseministries.org. 14:20 This is how we decide which programs need to be done 14:23 and this is how we know how to serve you better. 14:27 I want to thank you for joining us today on Heartwise. 14:30 Go out there and have some fresh fruits and vegetables, 14:32 and we hope that you just have a wonderful great filled day today 14:36 and thanks for joining us. |
