00:15 Growing Old, It's so much fun.
00:20 You get to address issues concerning body parts 00:23 you didn't even know you had, but there is hope, stay tuned. 00:27 I'm Dr. James Marcum. 00:31 Are you interested in discovering the reason why? 00:34 Do you want solutions to your health care problems? 00:37 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:40 Well, you are about to be given the Ultimate Prescription. 00:47 As we age certain things about us stop functioning. 00:51 They just stop. Both men and women 00:53 face these changes with a degree of resolve. 00:56 We accept them as inevitable, not much we can do about it 00:59 right? Wrong! There's a lot we can do 01:02 to ease our way through the elder years. 01:04 We're all going to grow old but we can certainly do it 01:08 with grace, dignity, and a surprising degree of health. 01:12 Dr. Marcum, what do we need to know? 01:15 Whoa Charles, you always ask what do we need to know. 01:17 There is a lot to be talked about in aging. 01:20 What do I need to know? You not so much. 01:22 Everybody is aging as each second goes by 01:26 so it's something that we all have to face 01:27 and unfortunately as we get older things change, 01:31 parts wear out. Yes! 01:33 One of the first parts to wear out is the vision. 01:36 You know the vision starts to change, 01:38 one of the first things we have is vision changes 01:40 and thank goodness for modern medicine 01:42 we have the ability to take away cataracts, 01:45 we can help improve vision, we have glasses and 01:48 they now call them progressive lenses. Ok. 01:52 I now have some bifocals or progressive lenses myself. 01:55 Hearing is another thing that just progressively gets worse. 01:59 Some people now, we have modern medicine that can give 02:02 people hearing aids. 02:03 The joints, sometimes the joints wear out and we have 02:07 lots of problems, you heard this bone on bone 02:09 that also creates lots of pain that comes with us. 02:12 Everything sort of gets older, the blood vessels get older. 02:17 The brain, the brain also gets older, 02:20 we are not able to think quite as quick as we used to. 02:22 But there are some things that we can do that we need to know 02:25 about aging. There's some things we can do to maybe 02:28 slow it down a little bit. There's things...bad things 02:31 that we do that speed it up a little bit. 02:33 Now, let me talk a little bit about some of the things that 02:36 make us age quicker. 02:38 Did you know Charles that people that smoke cigarettes 02:41 age quicker? They age quicker, they get wrinkles on their skin, 02:44 their skin olds quicker, the aging in the body quickens. 02:48 People that drink alcohol age quicker, 02:50 it wears out the parts especially the brain. 02:53 People that are obese, that carry extra weight age quicker. 02:57 People that have obesity have this process called 03:00 oxidation that goes on and we've already discovered that 03:03 that is not good, so oxidation is not good. 03:06 Did you know that people that have high sugar in their diets, 03:10 especially high fructose corn syrup, they age quicker. 03:14 And these call these fancy name called AGE's, 03:17 Advanced Glycolated Products and what that is, 03:20 is the sugar binds to things especially DNA. 03:23 In the body that's the cellular part that regulates 03:26 this, it doesn't do as well. So there is lots of things 03:29 and also lots of things... Did you know people that 03:31 don't exercise age quicker? 03:34 Here is a good one and I've seen this several times in 03:37 practice. Someone is retired, they get done with work, 03:40 they used to be doing stuff every day and they go home 03:43 and they just sit in their chair and they don't do anything. 03:46 They don't get out and talk with other people, 03:48 they don't stay busy, they just sit in that chair 03:50 and take it easy. They might watch TV, they might... 03:53 they don't do anything. Those people also age quicker. 03:57 Did you know that your spirituality also plays in 04:01 in aging. If you have a good spiritual life, 04:05 good concepts of God, we've already talked about this 04:09 in other programs, the pre- frontal cortex keeps growing, 04:12 new neurons, new growth factors when you do these things. 04:16 And also the stress part of the body which ages us 04:19 is turned down. This process that's numerous things called 04:23 inflammation, we get inflammation when our body 04:25 is under stress when we are worried. 04:27 Chronic stress causes inflammation, 04:30 inflammation throughout our body gets us older 04:33 so if we have a life that's full of worry, cares, stress, 04:36 worry, guilt, chronic pain, that ages us quicker. 04:40 So all these things make us age quicker, 04:42 so it only makes sense the opposite to keep us from aging 04:45 quicker, is to do all these things, 04:47 but we have some really good news about aging Charles. 04:50 Absolutely and what I hear you saying is that 04:52 all of these items that you listed, they cause stress 04:57 in the body, they cause the body to work harder 04:58 than it usually would. Yep! And that wears it out. 05:02 Um hum, and it can also affect our DNA. 05:04 We've known how some of these thing affect our epigenetic... 05:07 turn on Genes that are already there affecting our own 05:10 aging process. So all of these things... 05:13 Aging is a very complex thing that involves numerous 05:16 different situations from our diet to our thoughts, 05:19 to our own genetics, to our bad habits, 05:22 you can accelerate aging. 05:24 There's so many factors but the good news that I wanted to 05:28 get back to, the good news is the way I see aging as 05:31 this is just a temporary thing, you know, we are going to age 05:34 here, but some day we are going to get everything brand new 05:37 and some day we are not going to age any more. 05:40 Some day it is just going to be great, no more of this 05:42 imperfection that we have to deal with, 05:44 and that is good news just having that hope and that faith 05:48 that can help slow the aging process here on earth 05:52 because we have all that good chemistry, we turn down that 05:54 stress cause you and I know where we are going. 05:57 Yeah. We know what the ultimate path is, the ultimate plan. 05:59 Unfortunately Charles there are some out there that 06:02 don't know where they are going. 06:03 They are fearful, they watch TV, the news, 06:07 and all that stresses them and they are concerned about 06:09 what's going to happen when I age? 06:11 What's going to happen when I wear out? 06:13 What's going to happen when I can't see? 06:14 What's going to happen when I can't hear? 06:16 What's going to happen when I can't think there? 06:18 Who's going to take care of me? 06:19 Who's going to be there for me, what am I going to do? 06:22 What am I going to do when my physical body goes away? 06:25 These are all concerns that are a part of the aging process 06:29 and unfortunately one of the biggest things that I see is 06:32 when people get older they get scared, 06:34 they get more scared, they are worried about things more. 06:37 The brain does part of this but we don't want people to 06:42 have that, we want them to have lots of love 06:44 in their life because love does cast out all fear. 06:47 We don't want them to have anxiety about the future 06:49 we want to have assured and hopes. 06:51 So part of our discussion on aging has to be that what's 06:54 going to happen when our physical bodies finish 06:56 we are going to have the assurance to know 06:59 that we have a relationship with a loving God, 07:01 He's going to make everything right, 07:03 the aging process we don't have to worry about anymore. 07:06 Not that we want to speed up our aging here. Right! 07:08 Because we still want to serve, so we still want to 07:11 avoid those things that want to age us quickly 07:13 we want to avoid cigarettes, alcohol, and extra weight 07:16 and all these things that cause inflammation, 07:18 and all the stress that turns on our DNA 07:20 we want to avoid all of that and go as slow as we can. 07:23 But at the same time we know when that day will inevitably 07:26 come for all of us if God doesn't come home 07:28 we want to have that reassurance, that hope 07:31 to know that aging is not that big a deal. 07:34 It seems to me that you are telling us that we need to start 07:38 preparing for the aging process now...Right! No matter how old 07:43 we are, if you are a teenager you start preparing for it. 07:46 Right! Now is the time to start doing it. 07:49 So what do we do? What are some of the thing that we can do 07:51 starting right now to lengthen our lives, 07:54 and more importantly lengthen the quality of the lives 07:56 we have left. Well you know if I would put up 07:58 right at the top of that list would be exercise 08:02 exercise the body. They say if you don't use it 08:04 you loose it. And that doesn't mean go to 08:06 they gymnasium. No, move those parts 08:09 if you are not moving those parts they don't do as well. 08:11 That might not be excessive exercise but keep moving, 08:14 that's one of the biggest things that helps the brain, 08:17 the body, prevents falls as we get older, 08:20 exercise is one of the best treatment that we have. 08:22 So that would have to be at the very top of the list 08:25 would be to exercise, also to stay active mentally. 08:28 Some people when they retire they quit doing things 08:31 they withdraw, they don't have the spirit of discussions, 08:34 they don't read books, they don't continue to grow and learn 08:38 but that's the time we can lean more than we've ever 08:40 learned before. Keep that mind active, working, 08:43 keep that relationship with God going even more stronger 08:47 as we go to create these new neuropathways 08:50 to grow that part of your brain that we talked about in 08:53 previous shows called the anterior cingulate. 08:55 We want to grow that to create new neurons, new growth 08:58 within our brain and we want to help ourself through that 09:01 also we want to turn off some of that stress chemistry, 09:03 and that fear and anxiety so when we keep 09:05 worship is a part of that aging. 09:07 Then we want to make sure we have good nutrition. 09:10 We want to make sure we have lots of water. 09:12 We want to avoid things that are toxin that causes us 09:15 oxidation that we've caught and we know that 09:18 certain diets that we eat, a lot of processed foods, 09:20 a lot of fats, that causes oxidation, 09:23 oxidation is going to make us age quicker. 09:25 We eat a lot of processed sugar, especially the 09:28 high fructose corn syrup, those type of things 09:31 are going to cause us glycosylation. 09:33 We know that type 2 diabetics, that's a form of glycosylation 09:36 the sugar pops on the hemoglobin and that's a bad thing 09:39 because it can actually... All that glycosylation can 09:41 change our DNA and that is the way we function. 09:44 So there are lots of variables that come in when we are aging 09:48 but one of the big things we want to know is... 09:50 I get a lot of questions when people age is they worry 09:53 about things, I can't hear any more, some people don't 09:56 smell to good, some people don't taste good, 09:58 some people don't see good. 09:59 They have a lot of worries and concerns 10:02 and the worries and concerns accelerate the whole process. 10:06 So we want to have that peace and joy that comes within us, 10:10 we want to help people make more endorphins and the 10:13 dopamine's and all this can come by specific things 10:16 that we can choose to do. 10:17 You know laughter, the best medicine, 10:19 laughter is a great way to make endorphins, 10:21 worship is a great way to make endorphins, 10:24 music makes endorphins, all these can turn off some of 10:27 our stress chemistry, some of this bad stuff that's 10:30 going on in our body that accelerates the aging process. 10:32 Whenever you talk about these things I try to get practical, 10:37 I try to figure out what can we do in our lives right now 10:40 and you've given us some good ideas. 10:42 It sounds like involvement, it sounds like keeping involved 10:46 keeping the mind sharp, reading the books, doing the crossword 10:48 puzzles, making the puzzles there on the table, 10:52 taking up a hobby like photography or something 10:55 that will get you out. Hiking, biking, stay connected 11:00 to the world, stay connected to doing things, keep the mind 11:03 active which will actually help with the aging processing 11:06 it will keep it from coming along and the nutritional part 11:08 is so important as well. We were designed to be creative. 11:11 We were designed to be creative constantly. 11:13 Not to be entertained. Yes! We were designed to do things, 11:16 we were designed to be active and take care of people. 11:18 We were designed to serve each other. When we get away from 11:22 these tenants, guess what happens, we start to just get 11:25 old. When we are watching television, we are watching 11:27 other people be creative. Yeah. Right. 11:29 We're not being creative our- selves. No and sometimes we 11:32 don't think, we just let it just numb us, we just sort of go 11:35 from there. That's the beauty of book reading, 11:37 I want to put this here because I've heard about this. 11:39 When you watch a television program, you are in the 11:41 passive mode, you are being entertained, things are just 11:44 coming at you and you don't have to process anything 11:46 other than oh, that's interesting, that's fine 11:48 I wonder what is going to happen next? 11:50 When you read a book your mind is always active in the 11:55 active way, you are building what you are seeing, 11:58 what you are reading, you are building this in your mind, 12:02 you are seeing these things in your mind, your mind is 12:03 actually doing things, your mind is making connections 12:06 that the book opens up for you. So reading is a lot better than 12:10 just watching which tells us get away from the computer 12:15 get outside, get out there in the fresh air and enjoy 12:18 the nature that God has for us, that will help in the 12:21 aging process. Balance will help and you know what I've done 12:23 on this program is we've made a little change and if 12:26 someone's real sharp they are going to be able to tell what's 12:28 been going on in our program that will keep them sharp. 12:31 You know, we have a little doctor that we move around 12:34 sometimes and you can sort of see him...There he is. 12:36 So people will stay in the game so they will stay alert and 12:40 notice what is going on. Now isn't that a neat thing? 12:42 For the last 13 programs we've been moving this little doctor 12:45 around on the set and maybe you will be acute enough to 12:48 see that and just wonder where it is. In future programs you 12:50 should find out where he is at. Find out where he is, 12:52 there's the doctor right there, there he is sitting over by the 12:55 table, we move him around in the programs and just a little 12:59 Keep your mind active, check it out. 13:01 When we come back, your questions from 13:03 Heartwiseministries.org about the subject of aging, 13:06 so stay tuned. |
