Both men and women 00:00:51.02\00:00:53.82 face these changes with a degree of resolve. 00:00:53.85\00:00:56.09 We accept them as inevitable, not much we can do about it 00:00:56.12\00:00:59.32 right? Wrong! There's a lot we can do 00:00:59.35\00:01:02.40 to ease our way through the elder years. 00:01:02.43\00:01:04.82 We're all going to grow old but we can certainly do it 00:01:04.85\00:01:08.45 with grace, dignity, and a surprising degree of health. 00:01:08.48\00:01:12.40 Dr. Marcum, what do we need to know? 00:01:12.43\00:01:15.02 Whoa Charles, you always ask what do we need to know. 00:01:15.05\00:01:17.92 There is a lot to be talked about in aging. 00:01:17.95\00:01:20.53 What do I need to know? You not so much. 00:01:20.56\00:01:22.01 Everybody is aging as each second goes by 00:01:22.04\00:01:26.15 so it's something that we all have to face 00:01:26.18\00:01:27.87 and unfortunately as we get older things change, 00:01:27.90\00:01:31.49 parts wear out. Yes! 00:01:31.52\00:01:33.20 One of the first parts to wear out is the vision. 00:01:33.23\00:01:36.20 You know the vision starts to change, 00:01:36.23\00:01:38.04 one of the first things we have is vision changes 00:01:38.07\00:01:40.42 and thank goodness for modern medicine 00:01:40.45\00:01:42.47 we have the ability to take away cataracts, 00:01:42.50\00:01:45.64 we can help improve vision, we have glasses and 00:01:45.67\00:01:48.09 they now call them progressive lenses. Ok. 00:01:48.12\00:01:52.19 I now have some bifocals or progressive lenses myself. 00:01:52.22\00:01:55.93 Hearing is another thing that just progressively gets worse. 00:01:55.96\00:01:59.62 Some people now, we have modern medicine that can give 00:01:59.65\00:02:02.52 people hearing aids. 00:02:02.55\00:02:03.78 The joints, sometimes the joints wear out and we have 00:02:03.81\00:02:07.37 lots of problems, you heard this bone on bone 00:02:07.40\00:02:09.50 that also creates lots of pain that comes with us. 00:02:09.53\00:02:12.94 Everything sort of gets older, the blood vessels get older. 00:02:12.97\00:02:17.22 The brain, the brain also gets older, 00:02:17.25\00:02:20.14 we are not able to think quite as quick as we used to. 00:02:20.17\00:02:22.88 But there are some things that we can do that we need to know 00:02:22.91\00:02:25.25 about aging. There's some things we can do to maybe 00:02:25.28\00:02:28.00 slow it down a little bit. There's things...bad things 00:02:28.03\00:02:31.50 that we do that speed it up a little bit. 00:02:31.53\00:02:33.11 Now, let me talk a little bit about some of the things that 00:02:33.14\00:02:36.01 make us age quicker. 00:02:36.04\00:02:38.43 Did you know Charles that people that smoke cigarettes 00:02:38.46\00:02:41.39 age quicker? They age quicker, they get wrinkles on their skin, 00:02:41.42\00:02:44.86 their skin olds quicker, the aging in the body quickens. 00:02:44.89\00:02:48.02 People that drink alcohol age quicker, 00:02:48.05\00:02:50.67 it wears out the parts especially the brain. 00:02:50.70\00:02:53.03 People that are obese, that carry extra weight age quicker. 00:02:53.06\00:02:57.78 People that have obesity have this process called 00:02:57.81\00:03:00.54 oxidation that goes on and we've already discovered that 00:03:00.57\00:03:03.51 that is not good, so oxidation is not good. 00:03:03.54\00:03:06.75 Did you know that people that have high sugar in their diets, 00:03:06.78\00:03:10.58 especially high fructose corn syrup, they age quicker. 00:03:10.61\00:03:14.82 And these call these fancy name called AGE's, 00:03:14.85\00:03:17.62 Advanced Glycolated Products and what that is, 00:03:17.65\00:03:20.84 is the sugar binds to things especially DNA. 00:03:20.87\00:03:23.78 In the body that's the cellular part that regulates 00:03:23.81\00:03:26.54 this, it doesn't do as well. So there is lots of things 00:03:26.57\00:03:29.67 and also lots of things... Did you know people that 00:03:29.70\00:03:31.79 don't exercise age quicker? 00:03:31.82\00:03:34.23 Here is a good one and I've seen this several times in 00:03:34.26\00:03:37.44 practice. Someone is retired, they get done with work, 00:03:37.47\00:03:40.85 they used to be doing stuff every day and they go home 00:03:40.88\00:03:43.48 and they just sit in their chair and they don't do anything. 00:03:43.51\00:03:46.45 They don't get out and talk with other people, 00:03:46.48\00:03:48.42 they don't stay busy, they just sit in that chair 00:03:48.45\00:03:50.96 and take it easy. They might watch TV, they might... 00:03:50.99\00:03:53.67 they don't do anything. Those people also age quicker. 00:03:53.70\00:03:57.32 Did you know that your spirituality also plays in 00:03:57.35\00:04:01.65 in aging. If you have a good spiritual life, 00:04:01.68\00:04:05.80 good concepts of God, we've already talked about this 00:04:05.83\00:04:09.32 in other programs, the pre- frontal cortex keeps growing, 00:04:09.35\00:04:12.58 new neurons, new growth factors when you do these things. 00:04:12.61\00:04:16.73 And also the stress part of the body which ages us 00:04:16.76\00:04:19.71 is turned down. This process that's numerous things called 00:04:19.74\00:04:23.23 inflammation, we get inflammation when our body 00:04:23.26\00:04:25.90 is under stress when we are worried. 00:04:25.93\00:04:27.76 Chronic stress causes inflammation, 00:04:27.79\00:04:30.24 inflammation throughout our body gets us older 00:04:30.27\00:04:33.05 so if we have a life that's full of worry, cares, stress, 00:04:33.08\00:04:36.21 worry, guilt, chronic pain, that ages us quicker. 00:04:36.24\00:04:40.31 So all these things make us age quicker, 00:04:40.34\00:04:42.55 so it only makes sense the opposite to keep us from aging 00:04:42.58\00:04:45.55 quicker, is to do all these things, 00:04:45.58\00:04:47.38 but we have some really good news about aging Charles. 00:04:47.41\00:04:50.05 Absolutely and what I hear you saying is that 00:04:50.08\00:04:52.88 all of these items that you listed, they cause stress 00:04:52.91\00:04:57.02 in the body, they cause the body to work harder 00:04:57.05\00:04:58.88 than it usually would. Yep! And that wears it out. 00:04:58.91\00:05:02.30 Um hum, and it can also affect our DNA. 00:05:02.33\00:05:04.44 We've known how some of these thing affect our epigenetic... 00:05:04.47\00:05:07.83 turn on Genes that are already there affecting our own 00:05:07.86\00:05:10.55 aging process. So all of these things... 00:05:10.58\00:05:13.17 Aging is a very complex thing that involves numerous 00:05:13.20\00:05:16.32 different situations from our diet to our thoughts, 00:05:16.35\00:05:19.95 to our own genetics, to our bad habits, 00:05:19.98\00:05:22.74 you can accelerate aging. 00:05:22.77\00:05:24.06 There's so many factors but the good news that I wanted to 00:05:24.09\00:05:28.24 get back to, the good news is the way I see aging as 00:05:28.27\00:05:31.37 this is just a temporary thing, you know, we are going to age 00:05:31.40\00:05:34.31 here, but some day we are going to get everything brand new 00:05:34.34\00:05:37.53 and some day we are not going to age any more. 00:05:37.56\00:05:40.33 Some day it is just going to be great, no more of this 00:05:40.36\00:05:42.76 imperfection that we have to deal with, 00:05:42.79\00:05:44.79 and that is good news just having that hope and that faith 00:05:44.82\00:05:48.96 that can help slow the aging process here on earth 00:05:48.99\00:05:52.26 because we have all that good chemistry, we turn down that 00:05:52.29\00:05:54.81 stress cause you and I know where we are going. 00:05:54.84\00:05:57.16 Yeah. We know what the ultimate path is, the ultimate plan. 00:05:57.19\00:05:59.78 Unfortunately Charles there are some out there that 00:05:59.82\00:06:02.51 don't know where they are going. 00:06:02.54\00:06:03.57 They are fearful, they watch TV, the news, 00:06:03.60\00:06:07.19 and all that stresses them and they are concerned about 00:06:07.22\00:06:09.94 what's going to happen when I age? 00:06:09.97\00:06:11.80 What's going to happen when I wear out? 00:06:11.83\00:06:13.18 What's going to happen when I can't see? 00:06:13.21\00:06:14.93 What's going to happen when I can't hear? 00:06:14.96\00:06:16.18 What's going to happen when I can't think there? 00:06:16.21\00:06:18.19 Who's going to take care of me? 00:06:18.22\00:06:19.94 Who's going to be there for me, what am I going to do? 00:06:19.97\00:06:22.27 What am I going to do when my physical body goes away? 00:06:22.30\00:06:25.42 These are all concerns that are a part of the aging process 00:06:25.45\00:06:29.10 and unfortunately one of the biggest things that I see is 00:06:29.13\00:06:32.07 when people get older they get scared, 00:06:32.10\00:06:34.53 they get more scared, they are worried about things more. 00:06:34.56\00:06:37.74 The brain does part of this but we don't want people to 00:06:37.77\00:06:42.16 have that, we want them to have lots of love 00:06:42.19\00:06:44.14 in their life because love does cast out all fear. 00:06:44.17\00:06:47.13 We don't want them to have anxiety about the future 00:06:47.16\00:06:49.22 we want to have assured and hopes. 00:06:49.25\00:06:51.19 So part of our discussion on aging has to be that what's 00:06:51.22\00:06:54.24 going to happen when our physical bodies finish 00:06:54.27\00:06:56.65 we are going to have the assurance to know 00:06:56.68\00:06:59.03 that we have a relationship with a loving God, 00:06:59.06\00:07:01.37 He's going to make everything right, 00:07:01.40\00:07:03.45 the aging process we don't have to worry about anymore. 00:07:03.48\00:07:06.06 Not that we want to speed up our aging here. Right! 00:07:06.09\00:07:08.83 Because we still want to serve, so we still want to 00:07:08.86\00:07:11.39 avoid those things that want to age us quickly 00:07:11.42\00:07:13.61 we want to avoid cigarettes, alcohol, and extra weight 00:07:13.64\00:07:16.66 and all these things that cause inflammation, 00:07:16.69\00:07:18.63 and all the stress that turns on our DNA 00:07:18.66\00:07:20.57 we want to avoid all of that and go as slow as we can. 00:07:20.60\00:07:23.58 But at the same time we know when that day will inevitably 00:07:23.61\00:07:26.04 come for all of us if God doesn't come home 00:07:26.07\00:07:28.77 we want to have that reassurance, that hope 00:07:28.80\00:07:31.50 to know that aging is not that big a deal. 00:07:31.53\00:07:34.87 It seems to me that you are telling us that we need to start 00:07:34.90\00:07:38.56 preparing for the aging process now...Right! No matter how old 00:07:38.59\00:07:43.73 we are, if you are a teenager you start preparing for it. 00:07:43.76\00:07:46.56 Right! Now is the time to start doing it. 00:07:46.59\00:07:48.98 So what do we do? What are some of the thing that we can do 00:07:49.01\00:07:51.09 starting right now to lengthen our lives, 00:07:51.12\00:07:54.02 and more importantly lengthen the quality of the lives 00:07:54.05\00:07:56.57 we have left. Well you know if I would put up 00:07:56.66\00:07:58.88 right at the top of that list would be exercise 00:07:58.91\00:08:02.09 exercise the body. They say if you don't use it 00:08:02.12\00:08:04.58 you loose it. And that doesn't mean go to 00:08:04.61\00:08:06.58 they gymnasium. No, move those parts 00:08:06.61\00:08:09.08 if you are not moving those parts they don't do as well. 00:08:09.11\00:08:11.81 That might not be excessive exercise but keep moving, 00:08:11.84\00:08:14.77 that's one of the biggest things that helps the brain, 00:08:14.80\00:08:17.30 the body, prevents falls as we get older, 00:08:17.33\00:08:20.20 exercise is one of the best treatment that we have. 00:08:20.23\00:08:22.72 So that would have to be at the very top of the list 00:08:22.75\00:08:25.36 would be to exercise, also to stay active mentally. 00:08:25.39\00:08:28.38 Some people when they retire they quit doing things 00:08:28.41\00:08:31.64 they withdraw, they don't have the spirit of discussions, 00:08:31.67\00:08:34.74 they don't read books, they don't continue to grow and learn 00:08:34.77\00:08:38.05 but that's the time we can lean more than we've ever 00:08:38.08\00:08:40.36 learned before. Keep that mind active, working, 00:08:40.39\00:08:43.60 keep that relationship with God going even more stronger 00:08:43.63\00:08:47.96 as we go to create these new neuropathways 00:08:47.99\00:08:50.89 to grow that part of your brain that we talked about in 00:08:50.92\00:08:53.07 previous shows called the anterior cingulate. 00:08:53.10\00:08:55.38 We want to grow that to create new neurons, new growth 00:08:55.41\00:08:58.43 within our brain and we want to help ourself through that 00:08:58.46\00:09:01.03 also we want to turn off some of that stress chemistry, 00:09:01.06\00:09:03.56 and that fear and anxiety so when we keep 00:09:03.59\00:09:05.73 worship is a part of that aging. 00:09:05.76\00:09:07.74 Then we want to make sure we have good nutrition. 00:09:07.77\00:09:10.05 We want to make sure we have lots of water. 00:09:10.08\00:09:12.66 We want to avoid things that are toxin that causes us 00:09:12.69\00:09:15.20 oxidation that we've caught and we know that 00:09:15.23\00:09:18.43 certain diets that we eat, a lot of processed foods, 00:09:18.46\00:09:20.90 a lot of fats, that causes oxidation, 00:09:20.93\00:09:23.42 oxidation is going to make us age quicker. 00:09:23.45\00:09:25.72 We eat a lot of processed sugar, especially the 00:09:25.75\00:09:28.56 high fructose corn syrup, those type of things 00:09:28.59\00:09:31.25 are going to cause us glycosylation. 00:09:31.28\00:09:33.36 We know that type 2 diabetics, that's a form of glycosylation 00:09:33.39\00:09:36.74 the sugar pops on the hemoglobin and that's a bad thing 00:09:36.77\00:09:39.84 because it can actually... All that glycosylation can 00:09:39.87\00:09:41.86 change our DNA and that is the way we function. 00:09:41.89\00:09:44.87 So there are lots of variables that come in when we are aging 00:09:44.90\00:09:48.06 but one of the big things we want to know is... 00:09:48.09\00:09:50.32 I get a lot of questions when people age is they worry 00:09:50.35\00:09:53.96 about things, I can't hear any more, some people don't 00:09:53.99\00:09:56.72 smell to good, some people don't taste good, 00:09:56.75\00:09:58.78 some people don't see good. 00:09:58.81\00:09:59.84 They have a lot of worries and concerns 00:09:59.87\00:10:02.20 and the worries and concerns accelerate the whole process. 00:10:02.23\00:10:06.15 So we want to have that peace and joy that comes within us, 00:10:06.18\00:10:10.21 we want to help people make more endorphins and the 00:10:10.24\00:10:13.01 dopamine's and all this can come by specific things 00:10:13.04\00:10:16.13 that we can choose to do. 00:10:16.16\00:10:17.27 You know laughter, the best medicine, 00:10:17.30\00:10:19.38 laughter is a great way to make endorphins, 00:10:19.41\00:10:21.86 worship is a great way to make endorphins, 00:10:21.89\00:10:24.52 music makes endorphins, all these can turn off some of 00:10:24.55\00:10:27.34 our stress chemistry, some of this bad stuff that's 00:10:27.37\00:10:30.10 going on in our body that accelerates the aging process. 00:10:30.13\00:10:32.91 Whenever you talk about these things I try to get practical, 00:10:32.94\00:10:37.96 I try to figure out what can we do in our lives right now 00:10:37.99\00:10:40.73 and you've given us some good ideas. 00:10:40.76\00:10:41.98 It sounds like involvement, it sounds like keeping involved 00:10:42.01\00:10:46.06 keeping the mind sharp, reading the books, doing the crossword 00:10:46.09\00:10:48.87 puzzles, making the puzzles there on the table, 00:10:48.90\00:10:52.73 taking up a hobby like photography or something 00:10:52.76\00:10:55.55 that will get you out. Hiking, biking, stay connected 00:10:55.58\00:11:00.45 to the world, stay connected to doing things, keep the mind 00:11:00.48\00:11:03.17 active which will actually help with the aging processing 00:11:03.20\00:11:06.14 it will keep it from coming along and the nutritional part 00:11:06.17\00:11:08.64 is so important as well. We were designed to be creative. 00:11:08.68\00:11:11.86 We were designed to be creative constantly. 00:11:11.89\00:11:13.52 Not to be entertained. Yes! We were designed to do things, 00:11:13.55\00:11:16.46 we were designed to be active and take care of people. 00:11:16.49\00:11:18.86 We were designed to serve each other. When we get away from 00:11:18.89\00:11:22.10 these tenants, guess what happens, we start to just get 00:11:22.13\00:11:25.85 old. When we are watching television, we are watching 00:11:25.88\00:11:27.86 other people be creative. Yeah. Right. 00:11:27.89\00:11:29.74 We're not being creative our- selves. No and sometimes we 00:11:29.77\00:11:32.82 don't think, we just let it just numb us, we just sort of go 00:11:32.85\00:11:35.64 from there. That's the beauty of book reading, 00:11:35.67\00:11:37.40 I want to put this here because I've heard about this. 00:11:37.43\00:11:39.06 When you watch a television program, you are in the 00:11:39.09\00:11:41.79 passive mode, you are being entertained, things are just 00:11:41.82\00:11:44.33 coming at you and you don't have to process anything 00:11:44.36\00:11:46.44 other than oh, that's interesting, that's fine 00:11:46.47\00:11:48.92 I wonder what is going to happen next? 00:11:48.95\00:11:50.19 When you read a book your mind is always active in the 00:11:50.22\00:11:55.44 active way, you are building what you are seeing, 00:11:55.47\00:11:58.74 what you are reading, you are building this in your mind, 00:11:58.77\00:12:02.07 you are seeing these things in your mind, your mind is 00:12:02.10\00:12:03.81 actually doing things, your mind is making connections 00:12:03.84\00:12:06.81 that the book opens up for you. So reading is a lot better than 00:12:06.84\00:12:10.80 just watching which tells us get away from the computer 00:12:10.83\00:12:15.45 get outside, get out there in the fresh air and enjoy 00:12:15.48\00:12:18.11 the nature that God has for us, that will help in the 00:12:18.14\00:12:20.97 aging process. Balance will help and you know what I've done 00:12:21.00\00:12:23.55 on this program is we've made a little change and if 00:12:23.58\00:12:26.63 someone's real sharp they are going to be able to tell what's 00:12:26.66\00:12:28.81 been going on in our program that will keep them sharp. 00:12:28.84\00:12:31.89 You know, we have a little doctor that we move around 00:12:31.92\00:12:34.58 sometimes and you can sort of see him...There he is. 00:12:34.61\00:12:36.70 So people will stay in the game so they will stay alert and 00:12:36.73\00:12:40.20 notice what is going on. Now isn't that a neat thing? 00:12:40.23\00:12:42.88 For the last 13 programs we've been moving this little doctor 00:12:42.91\00:12:45.79 around on the set and maybe you will be acute enough to 00:12:45.82\00:12:48.44 see that and just wonder where it is. In future programs you 00:12:48.47\00:12:50.54 should find out where he is at. Find out where he is, 00:12:50.57\00:12:52.62 there's the doctor right there, there he is sitting over by the 00:12:52.65\00:12:55.55 table, we move him around in the programs and just a little 00:12:55.58\00:12:59.00 Keep your mind active, check it out. 00:12:59.03\00:13:01.31 When we come back, your questions from 00:13:01.34\00:13:03.29 Heartwiseministries.org about the subject of aging, 00:13:03.32\00:13:06.47 so stay tuned. 00:13:06.50\00:13:07.97
