Medicines? ABSOLUTELY! 00:01:51.26\00:01:53.32 In fact, some have caused heart valve problems, 00:01:53.35\00:01:55.39 some cause dangerous arrhythmias, 00:01:55.42\00:01:57.05 and they're not a long-term fix. 00:01:57.08\00:01:59.12 And one of the things we wanted to highlight 00:01:59.15\00:02:00.93 on this program today is not only do we have a problem 00:02:00.96\00:02:03.82 that can lead to other diseases, 00:02:03.85\00:02:05.33 but when you get these other medical conditions 00:02:05.36\00:02:07.35 caused by extra weight, guess what happens? 00:02:07.38\00:02:10.08 You're on more medications. 00:02:10.11\00:02:11.54 More medications can cause side effects. 00:02:11.57\00:02:13.61 For instance, diabetic medicines that lower blood sugar, 00:02:13.64\00:02:16.88 that can increase risk. 00:02:16.91\00:02:18.33 Pain medicines - if you have extra weight cause pain. 00:02:18.36\00:02:20.88 Narcotics - that can cause risk, 00:02:20.91\00:02:22.89 and sooner or later you've introduced a lot more risk 00:02:22.92\00:02:25.58 in your life - so rather than take medications, 00:02:25.61\00:02:29.00 if you carry extra weight, the real solution is to 00:02:29.03\00:02:32.02 find ways to get the weight off. 00:02:32.05\00:02:34.01 Now let me ask you a question because you have 00:02:34.04\00:02:35.82 said in the past that there is a place for modern medicines, 00:02:35.85\00:02:39.75 and there may be a situation, when it comes to your heart, 00:02:39.78\00:02:43.47 that you need to have that medicine to lower your 00:02:43.50\00:02:47.40 blood pressure or to... 00:02:47.43\00:02:48.56 Is there ever a time when someone is overweight 00:02:48.59\00:02:52.46 or obese when - you BETTER take some medicine NOW 00:02:52.49\00:02:55.43 or you're not going to live to see tomorrow? 00:02:55.46\00:02:57.17 Absolutely, there are situations where we give them 00:02:57.20\00:02:59.94 medicines to help a crisis situation, 00:02:59.97\00:03:03.23 but we weren't made to take medicines day in and day out. 00:03:03.26\00:03:06.02 They were for a short period of time, 00:03:06.05\00:03:07.77 then they were supposed to be stopped. 00:03:07.80\00:03:09.21 For instance, you know we talked previously about 00:03:09.24\00:03:11.89 blood pressure medicines. 00:03:11.92\00:03:12.95 Well, those medicines that you're talking 00:03:12.98\00:03:14.54 are the results of being overweight. 00:03:14.57\00:03:17.53 I'm talking about the FACT that you're overweight... 00:03:17.56\00:03:19.89 You give a blood pressure medicine to someone 00:03:19.92\00:03:22.42 who is overweight because they have high blood pressure, 00:03:22.45\00:03:24.32 but do you give a medicine in an emergency situation 00:03:24.35\00:03:26.85 simply because someone is feeling fine, 00:03:26.88\00:03:28.28 but they happen to be overweight? 00:03:28.31\00:03:29.44 If they have no other problems, 00:03:29.47\00:03:31.24 you mean, do I give them a medicine 00:03:31.27\00:03:32.62 to get the weight off of them? 00:03:32.65\00:03:34.27 No, because the risk of the medicines 00:03:34.30\00:03:37.09 are greater than the benefits. Yes 00:03:37.12\00:03:39.04 You have a risk of dying from the medications. 00:03:39.07\00:03:41.56 It can cause dangerous heart rhythms in some of them. 00:03:41.59\00:03:43.49 Now they're going to come up with new ones that maybe 00:03:43.52\00:03:45.83 are at less risk, but so far the ones that 00:03:45.86\00:03:47.81 have been in the past, increase your risk. 00:03:47.84\00:03:49.59 Most of these medications and dietary supplements 00:03:49.62\00:03:53.51 to lose weight, have things that increase your metabolism. 00:03:53.54\00:03:56.05 That's why you lose weight. 00:03:56.08\00:03:57.56 Well, and it also increases other problems like 00:03:57.59\00:03:59.90 dangerous heart rhythms. 00:03:59.93\00:04:01.09 We watch these energy pills that are loaded with 00:04:01.12\00:04:03.43 caffeine and ephedrine that get you revved up 00:04:03.46\00:04:05.72 and doing something all the time. 00:04:05.75\00:04:07.13 Well wouldn't it be safer for a person to speed up 00:04:07.16\00:04:09.65 their metabolism with water and do exercise, 00:04:09.68\00:04:12.49 and do these type of things rather than take the risk 00:04:12.52\00:04:14.82 of a medication that could potentially 00:04:14.85\00:04:16.93 cause lots of problems. 00:04:16.96\00:04:18.52 So the weight loss medications, I don't recommend. 00:04:18.55\00:04:21.08 The weight loss supplements, I don't recommend. 00:04:21.11\00:04:23.65 But there is a way to lose weight that's better than that, 00:04:23.68\00:04:27.02 and we want to sort of talk about that, 00:04:27.05\00:04:29.12 and that's getting back to some simple things that we can do. 00:04:29.15\00:04:32.12 So let's get back to the question... 00:04:32.15\00:04:34.69 Do I recommend supplements? 00:04:34.72\00:04:35.75 No... because - extra weight can lead to medications 00:04:35.78\00:04:39.29 to treat the symptoms of extra weight - 00:04:39.32\00:04:41.04 THAT can be potentially dangerous. 00:04:41.07\00:04:42.56 That's what I wanted to hear... okay, again the book, 00:04:42.60\00:04:44.57 "Medicines That Kill" James Marcum 00:04:44.61\00:04:46.90 You can find these things at Amazon. com 00:04:46.94\00:04:49.31 and other places that will be made available. 00:04:49.34\00:04:52.22 This is an important book for you to have in your library. 00:04:52.25\00:04:54.91 Before you start any kind of treatment plan, 00:04:54.94\00:04:58.66 I would love for you to read this book and know 00:04:58.69\00:05:01.59 what you are up against; what's going to happen here; 00:05:01.62\00:05:04.25 what may happen to you. 00:05:04.28\00:05:05.59 We're talking about risk management today, 00:05:05.62\00:05:07.86 danger management and this is an important resource 00:05:07.89\00:05:12.25 for that process. 00:05:12.28\00:05:13.55 You know, there's not a book like that that has been written 00:05:13.58\00:05:16.16 by a medical doctor that explains the risk, 00:05:16.19\00:05:19.47 and also gives the solutions to the problems. 00:05:19.50\00:05:21.84 You know, everyone knows that medicines are dangerous, 00:05:21.87\00:05:23.69 but a lot of people don't feel all the different ways that 00:05:23.72\00:05:26.15 medicines are in - you know even in an over-the-counter 00:05:26.18\00:05:28.24 medication like aspirin. 00:05:28.27\00:05:29.70 The #1 cause of fatal GI bleeding last year was aspirin. 00:05:29.73\00:05:34.17 Over-the-counter drugs... Yes! 00:05:34.20\00:05:35.26 The #1 cause, the most liver failure acutely was 00:05:35.29\00:05:38.07 acetaminophen which is in Tylenol. 00:05:38.10\00:05:40.68 So medications all have risk as we've talked about. 00:05:40.71\00:05:43.68 Weight has risk. Yes 00:05:43.71\00:05:45.37 The medicines that come to treat the complications 00:05:45.40\00:05:47.53 of weight management have risk... 00:05:47.56\00:05:48.90 that's why we're encouraging people to understand 00:05:48.93\00:05:51.55 that this weight issue is very important, 00:05:51.58\00:05:54.55 and if you're not on a plan today, 00:05:54.58\00:05:56.22 we want to come up with a plan today to help you 00:05:56.25\00:05:58.86 get motivated to start moving in the right direction. 00:05:58.89\00:06:01.68 All right - here's the next question from 00:06:01.71\00:06:03.48 heartwiseministries. org on this subject. 00:06:03.51\00:06:05.26 "There are so many diets and programs out there, 00:06:06.04\00:06:08.79 you mentioned that, I do not know where to start" 00:06:08.82\00:06:11.67 Now this is an important question because 00:06:11.70\00:06:13.57 we are inundated with this information. 00:06:13.60\00:06:17.59 We know what we want to do. 00:06:17.62\00:06:18.70 We know what we should do. 00:06:18.73\00:06:19.76 We know what we need to do. 00:06:19.79\00:06:21.58 What is the first STEP that we need to take 00:06:21.61\00:06:26.32 to try to mitigate the problem of overweight? 00:06:26.35\00:06:29.52 And to understand how to answer that, 00:06:29.55\00:06:32.18 you know, where to start, you have to understand the problem. 00:06:32.21\00:06:34.82 You know and that's sometimes individual. 00:06:35.82\00:06:37.89 Why does a person carry extra weight... 00:06:37.92\00:06:40.14 And you have to go through all the reasons, 00:06:40.17\00:06:41.80 you know, make sure it's not a thyroid or adrenal disorder. 00:06:41.83\00:06:44.64 Make sure there's no medical problem that's doing it. 00:06:44.67\00:06:47.16 So the first step then is check with your doctor 00:06:47.19\00:06:49.14 to say - "Is there something wrong with me that is 00:06:49.17\00:06:51.15 causing this to happen?" Yes 00:06:51.18\00:06:52.27 You know there are syndromes like Cushing syndrome, 00:06:52.30\00:06:54.57 low thyroid that can cause extra weight... First step 00:06:54.60\00:06:57.34 But most of the people, as you pointed out, 00:06:57.37\00:06:59.90 have it because of too many calories... 00:06:59.93\00:07:01.78 And then, why do people take too many calories? 00:07:01.81\00:07:04.51 Well, is it because they're being misinformed by the media? 00:07:04.54\00:07:08.08 Because it TASTES GOOD, Dr. Marcum! 00:07:08.11\00:07:10.31 And all these dopamine receptors. 00:07:10.34\00:07:12.68 Is it stress in their life that is coming from too much stress, 00:07:12.71\00:07:15.89 and they're trying to cope with that and they're eating more? 00:07:15.92\00:07:18.72 So it really starts, I think in weight management, 00:07:18.75\00:07:21.62 it starts in the brain. 00:07:21.65\00:07:22.90 Yes... It starts in the brain. 00:07:22.93\00:07:24.29 A person has to have the education, 00:07:24.32\00:07:26.02 understand that it's dangerous it could hurt them, 00:07:26.05\00:07:28.08 and then the first place I like to start people 00:07:28.11\00:07:30.89 in answering these questions is turning to God. 00:07:30.92\00:07:33.64 "God, I don't have the answers 00:07:33.67\00:07:35.18 I think the weight management programs don't have the answer," 00:07:35.21\00:07:37.64 but God has the answers for YOU. 00:07:37.67\00:07:39.76 The answer to WHY. 00:07:39.79\00:07:40.82 Why and how, also, how He wants 00:07:40.85\00:07:42.94 you to move through this problem... 00:07:42.97\00:07:44.48 And also He can give you the strength, 00:07:44.51\00:07:46.55 so I like to start people in the relationship with God. 00:07:46.58\00:07:49.21 I ask them to pray, get back into a relationship with God. 00:07:49.24\00:07:52.54 Study the Scriptures. 00:07:52.57\00:07:53.87 If you're not going to a worship situation, 00:07:53.90\00:07:56.66 whether that be church, find a place where you 00:07:56.69\00:07:58.98 can worship and God can grow that relationship... 00:07:59.01\00:08:01.50 And as you grow that relationship and diligently 00:08:01.53\00:08:04.25 search for truth, He's going to lead you to truth, 00:08:04.28\00:08:07.21 so that's where I start people. 00:08:07.24\00:08:08.78 I say, "Start in that relationship. " 00:08:08.81\00:08:10.38 The next thing I say, "Well, we need to increase the metabolism" 00:08:10.41\00:08:13.40 That's assuming everything else is normal. 00:08:13.43\00:08:15.69 Well, 2 ways to simply increase it is drink water. 00:08:15.72\00:08:19.55 Everyone can drink water, that can speed up your metabolism. 00:08:19.58\00:08:22.39 Okay, coffee, tea, soda... 00:08:22.42\00:08:24.57 Won't do it, that is not water. That's not water - okay 00:08:24.60\00:08:26.77 We weren't made 70% ice tea... 00:08:26.80\00:08:28.93 Just because it's liquid, doesn't mean it's water. 00:08:28.96\00:08:30.61 We were made 70% water. 00:08:30.64\00:08:32.12 Not only does it increase our metabolism, 00:08:32.15\00:08:34.50 bit it stretches out our stomach so we FEEL full. 00:08:34.53\00:08:37.85 ...70% of our body is made of water; 00:08:37.88\00:08:40.36 our brain has water to think well. 00:08:40.39\00:08:42.67 When we're dehydrated, we don't work as well, 00:08:42.70\00:08:46.08 so, I start people on water. 00:08:46.11\00:08:47.24 Most people can do that, Charles. 00:08:47.27\00:08:48.71 They drink water for a while. 00:08:48.74\00:08:50.33 They're in this relationship for a while, 00:08:50.37\00:08:52.49 and then all of a sudden you notice... 00:08:52.53\00:08:53.62 You know, I had a guy who lost 20 pounds last year 00:08:53.65\00:08:55.95 just by drinking water. Wow 00:08:55.98\00:08:57.43 They notice that God does change and His laws are true - 00:08:57.46\00:09:00.82 there's something about this! 00:09:00.85\00:09:01.88 There's another reason because when he was drinking water, 00:09:01.91\00:09:03.89 he was probably not drinking what he usually drinks. Exactly! 00:09:04.57\00:09:07.75 Drinks the soda pop and whatever... 00:09:07.78\00:09:09.02 So he lost 20 pounds and the next thing, I say - 00:09:09.05\00:09:11.76 "You know, God did work with you, 00:09:11.79\00:09:13.76 He gave you the power to understand water, 00:09:13.79\00:09:15.44 and you do feel better and you've lost weight. " 00:09:15.47\00:09:17.50 The NEXT thing I say - "Well, let's start a movement 00:09:17.53\00:09:19.99 program - we've got to speed up your metabolism!" 00:09:20.99\00:09:22.72 So they start some type of regular exercise, 00:09:22.75\00:09:24.45 and it might be just 1 minute a day, 2 minutes a day, 00:09:24.48\00:09:27.70 5 minutes a day, but they ask God to help them. 00:09:27.73\00:09:30.18 They drink the water and say, "God help me to exercise more" 00:09:30.21\00:09:33.20 and guess what? 00:09:33.23\00:09:34.36 As they drink more water and as they worship, 00:09:34.39\00:09:37.46 and as they exercise, their mind starts to change. 00:09:37.49\00:09:41.73 They grow these new neurons. 00:09:41.76\00:09:43.53 Their exercise program helps them out; 00:09:43.56\00:09:45.55 they get better blood flow to the brain; 00:09:45.58\00:09:47.46 they're getting better water to the brain; 00:09:47.49\00:09:49.56 they're getting worship to the brain. 00:09:49.59\00:09:51.39 Some of that stress chemistry from exercise and worship 00:09:51.42\00:09:54.04 starts turning you down a little bit - 00:09:54.07\00:09:55.52 so they are maybe not quite a dependent 00:09:55.55\00:09:57.51 on pleasing these dopamine receptors. Yes 00:09:57.54\00:10:00.00 You follow me here? I do 00:10:00.03\00:10:01.64 So they might do that for a while. 00:10:01.67\00:10:03.36 Okay, then the next thing I ask him to do, 00:10:03.39\00:10:05.26 moving along this line and some 00:10:05.29\00:10:06.87 people can move very fast on this line, 00:10:06.90\00:10:08.69 some people move slow... 00:10:08.73\00:10:09.83 I say - "Don't eat big at night" 00:10:09.86\00:10:12.19 Okay - don't eat big at night. 00:10:12.22\00:10:13.47 When you think about it, the big meal at night, Charles, 00:10:13.50\00:10:16.42 your metabolism slows at night. 00:10:16.45\00:10:19.21 You eat that big meal at night, 00:10:19.24\00:10:21.17 and it doesn't move through you - it just sits there! 00:10:21.20\00:10:24.06 And if you eat bad food at night, 00:10:24.09\00:10:26.45 it spoils in you and you absorb all the bad stuff, 00:10:26.48\00:10:30.26 all the chemicals. 00:10:30.29\00:10:31.47 If you eat a lot of meat products, 00:10:31.50\00:10:33.08 you absorb the steroids that that animal 00:10:33.11\00:10:35.74 is brought to market with. 00:10:35.77\00:10:37.41 The antibiotics, you know chickens live by each other 00:10:37.44\00:10:39.82 you know, so they don't all get sick, they give antibiotics. 00:10:39.85\00:10:42.65 ...80% of the antibiotics in America 00:10:42.68\00:10:44.87 are now used on our livestock... 00:10:44.90\00:10:46.76 And the feed - they feed these animals high protein food 00:10:46.79\00:10:49.80 because they want them to grow quick! 00:10:49.83\00:10:51.05 The quicker they grow, the quicker they come to market. 00:10:51.08\00:10:53.36 Well when you eat that stuff, not only do you 00:10:53.39\00:10:55.37 absorb all the calories, all the protein, all the fat, 00:10:55.40\00:10:58.55 you get the antibiotics, you get all the diseases... 00:10:58.58\00:11:00.99 All this gets absorbed in you... NOT GOOD! 00:11:01.02\00:11:03.59 So I ask people - don't eat so BIG at night. 00:11:03.62\00:11:06.81 I say just eat a little bit of fiber at night, 00:11:06.84\00:11:09.09 maybe have some celery, some apples... 00:11:09.12\00:11:10.95 And as they start doing that, guess what happens? 00:11:10.98\00:11:12.96 They rest better! 00:11:12.99\00:11:14.54 And when they start to rest better, 00:11:14.57\00:11:16.08 and they don't have all this food digesting in them overnight 00:11:16.11\00:11:18.86 ...guess what happens to the brain? 00:11:18.89\00:11:20.76 It thinks better, they can exercise better, 00:11:20.79\00:11:23.42 they can drink more water and guess what? 00:11:23.45\00:11:25.31 They worship better. 00:11:25.34\00:11:26.78 So all of a sudden, the brain becomes getting 00:11:26.81\00:11:29.04 more clear, the stress chemistry goes down, 00:11:29.07\00:11:31.34 and they see God working in their lives... 00:11:31.37\00:11:33.03 They say - "Yes, God's plan, this natural way 00:11:33.06\00:11:35.77 of losing weight - God's way, is WORKING!" 00:11:35.80\00:11:38.50 And the next thing you realize, Charles, is that the brain 00:11:38.53\00:11:42.08 begins to realize that this is working out for me in my life. 00:11:42.11\00:11:46.25 All these changes, and then people start 00:11:46.28\00:11:48.40 doing things like eating more fruits and vegetables, 00:11:48.43\00:11:50.50 and just eating enough bad stuff to be happy... 00:11:50.53\00:11:52.77 And what they soon discover is the bad stuff 00:11:52.80\00:11:55.28 makes them feel bad. 00:11:55.31\00:11:56.50 So guess what? 00:11:56.53\00:11:57.56 The brain has changed, the body has changed, 00:11:57.59\00:12:00.12 you're not as dependent on these dopamine receptors 00:12:00.15\00:12:02.63 we talked about and all of a sudden - 00:12:02.66\00:12:04.19 the weight starts coming off, 00:12:04.22\00:12:05.92 you have some good habits and it's just one step at a time. 00:12:05.95\00:12:09.39 There is a downside to this and I need to warn you about this. 00:12:09.42\00:12:12.33 There's a downside... 00:12:12.36\00:12:13.75 When you've gone through all of this, 00:12:13.78\00:12:15.91 and you find the weight coming off, 00:12:15.94\00:12:17.21 you're going to have to buy new clothes... 00:12:17.24\00:12:19.06 You're going to have to change everything in your closet... 00:12:19.09\00:12:21.31 That's a real bad downside, isn't it?
