00:16 WEIGHT MANAGEMENT - I know, I know
00:20 You're going to say, "Give up everything you 00:21 enjoy and eat like a RABBIT" 00:23 Well, have you ever met a rabbit with diabetes? 00:26 Stay tuned... 00:29 I'm Dr. James Marcum... 00:31 Are you interested in discovering the reason why? 00:34 Do you want solutions to your health care problems? 00:37 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:40 Well, you're about to be given the Ultimate Prescription! 00:46 Nothing generates feelings of frustration 00:48 and sometimes outright anger than the subject of 00:51 WEIGHT MANAGEMENT. 00:53 No one wants to be told that they're fat! 00:56 So how about another line of thought? 00:59 Think of excess weight as excess risk - which it is. 01:03 Extra pounds means extra danger. 01:06 So today, we're not inviting you to lose weight. 01:09 We're inviting you to lose danger to lower your risk 01:13 of suffering from all manner of ailments including diabetes. 01:16 Now - that's something we all need to hear 01:19 no matter what numbers appear on our bathroom scales. 01:22 Dr. Marcum, when a patient walks through your door 01:26 and you notice that he or she is overweight, 01:28 how does that alter your approach 01:30 to diagnosing their problem? 01:32 Well when I see someone that carries extra weight, Charles, 01:35 that's not an uncommon situation now; 01:37 in fact, most of the people that come to see me now 01:40 are overweight. 01:42 In the state where I practice, 01:44 60% of people are overweight, 01:46 30% are morbid obese... 01:49 And excuse the pun, but this is a growing problem, 01:54 and with it has come a lot of diseases that we need to 01:56 talk about that we didn't see in the past that are 01:59 associated with weight. 02:00 One of them, you mentioned, type 2 diabetes, 02:03 okay, that's another one. 02:05 Extra weight increases the risk of cancers. 02:08 It increases the risk of joint problems. 02:11 It increases the risk of sleep apnea. 02:13 It increases the risk of high blood pressure. 02:16 It increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. 02:19 It increases the risk of foot problems. 02:21 It increases the risk of digestive problems. 02:23 So extra weight really affects the whole body. 02:27 So you have to put that into the equation when 02:30 someone comes in with their problem, you can say, 02:31 "Well how much of this problem is something that needs 02:34 treating or how much of it just needs to be losing weight. " 02:36 And this is a major issue that we talk about... 02:40 is how do we get people to lose weight, 02:44 and the reason we talk about this on this program is 02:46 ...you know, we want to talk about situations 02:49 that affect lots of people. 02:50 And unfortunately, weight, management and extra weight 02:53 affects lots of people... 02:54 So we have to talk about it; 02:55 we have to come up with a plan, 02:57 and we have to give them something that they 02:59 can have hope on - if nothing else, 03:00 at least to educate them if you have extra weight, 03:03 it can lead to these dangerous health problems, 03:05 and of course, what's near and dear to my heart 03:07 is cardiovascular disease. 03:09 So, it only makes sense is as weight goes up, 03:11 chronic problems are going to go up; 03:13 chronic medication use is going to go up... 03:15 Well I was going to say that everything you mentioned there 03:17 has a pill for it... everything you said. 03:19 Chronic medication use is going to go up, 03:21 and we're not really solving the problem of this... 03:24 And there are some programs that the people just want to 03:27 quit medication to solve weight loss management. 03:30 And there have been several pills that have been on, 03:32 and one that I used when I first started was called 03:36 "Fen-Phen" and I talked about it in my latest book, 03:39 "Medicines That Kill" 03:40 and Fen-Phen caused problems with heart valves, 03:44 and it had to be removed from the market. 03:46 Most of the weight management medicines that have been 03:49 out there, have been removed from the market. 03:51 There are 3 of them that are coming on very soon 03:54 that are going to be on the market, 03:55 and I think that those are going to... 03:57 hopefully they don't have problems, 03:59 but usually they do have problems. 04:01 We think about some of the other modern medicine 04:04 procedures that deal with weight management; 04:06 we talk about gastric bypass where they bypass around 04:10 your stomach, make a very small patch 04:12 so you can't eat very much. 04:14 That has lots of side effects too. 04:16 I have a friend that has that and he's running to the 04:18 bathroom all the time. 04:20 You know, he has all sorts of GI issues 04:23 because we weren't designed for that. 04:26 They sometimes put bands on your esophagus 04:28 that they can tighten up so the food can't get through. 04:31 Well that's not the best method either. 04:33 So the modern medicine approach to weight management 04:36 is not working. 04:37 Then we talk about all the diets that are out there. 04:40 You know, all the diets there... 04:41 There are lots of fad diets... 04:43 You know, you eat this amount. 04:44 You know, you've heard about the high protein diet. 04:47 Then next came a low protein diet. 04:48 High fat diet, low fat diet. 04:51 High carb diet, low fat carb diet. 04:53 And none of them have actually shown to help people 04:55 lose weight over the long haul. 04:57 And many of them have been proven to be 04:58 very dangerous for health. Yes, exactly 05:01 I mean, you may lose a few pounds, 05:02 but they only cost you your life! 05:04 And unfortunately, dealing with patients and people with 05:08 weight management problems, everyone wants a quick fix. 05:12 And, it's not a quick fix, it's a total lifestyle change; 05:16 it involves every part of our lives, 05:18 and that's why when I studied some people a few years ago 05:23 that had weight management problems, 05:25 in our study we found out that the key... 05:28 Everyone knows what they should do. 05:30 Everyone knows the food. 05:31 Everyone knows they should exercise, 05:32 and drink more water. 05:34 They should increase their metabolism. 05:35 They know the dangers of the pills for weight management loss 05:39 They know the dangers of the procedures, 05:40 but what was the key to those people that DID keep it off, 05:44 was RELATIONSHIPS. 05:46 Relationships that they had with each other, 05:48 encouraging relationships and also the relationship 05:51 with GOD - that gave them the power to make changes, 05:55 and to continue on that path to help them day in and day out - 05:58 because there are a lot of chemical changes involved 06:01 in weight management and the food we eat, 06:03 and dopamine pathways and pathways of addiction, 06:07 and habits that need to be broken, 06:09 and it really takes a God to give us the power 06:11 to do these things, Charles... 06:12 And that's why this condition 06:14 which is really a disease in itself or will produce disease, 06:18 is growing exponentially, and if you think about it, 06:22 you know - everyone is getting heavier, 06:24 nothing out there is working, 06:26 so should we look for a new path? 06:28 Should we look for a new plan? 06:30 Should there be a new approach? 06:31 And medications aren't going 06:33 to be that answer, in my opinion. 06:35 The fad diets aren't going to 06:36 be the answer, in my opinion. 06:38 We have to get back to what I call "natural remedies" 06:42 God's plan for weight management and put God into the equation 06:46 to help us lose this weight and to gradually 06:48 stay with this plan over a lifetime, 06:50 not just a short period of time. 06:52 You know, as I look at this situation and I look around 06:55 at people who are overweight, and I find them everywhere, 06:58 I find them in church, 07:00 I find them at parties, 07:03 I find them in television programs, 07:06 I find them everywhere. 07:07 It doesn't seem to be that FAITH - religion is the answer, 07:12 and why do you think that is? 07:15 You would think that people who worship God, 07:17 who love God, who attend church, 07:20 who go as missionaries, 07:22 who spend their time witnessing for God, 07:25 why aren't they slender? 07:27 What is missing in that relationship with their God? 07:30 Well, you know, there is some research that suggests 07:34 that some people have genetic propensities to be heavy. 07:38 But NOT 60% of the people in the world... 07:40 That's correct... And you know, there are 07:42 some people that are on medications 07:44 that make it impossible to lose weight; 07:46 some of the diabetic medicines make it very hard to lose weight 07:49 And there are some doctors that are not treating any 07:52 type 2 diabetes with medications 07:55 because medications make you more hungry. 07:56 But a lot of times people - 07:58 we've talked about this on previous programs, 08:01 it's the stress that we're living under, the world stress. 08:04 And someone looks for the answers to stress problems. 08:07 They want to have some endorphins, some dopamines, 08:09 something that makes them feel good, 08:11 something that enables them to cope, 08:13 and the easiest thing out there is... 08:16 "let's have some food" 08:17 You don't have to wait for the church service to run around, 08:19 you don't have to... No Okay 08:21 We know that the food is so easy, 08:23 the pleasure receptors go up. 08:25 It helps you feel better at the end of the long day. 08:28 We have this mind set, we don't eat for nutrition, 08:31 we eat for pleasure... There you go! 08:33 and everyone has fostered this. 08:35 Look at all the commercials, supersize me, 08:38 and how easy it is to get our food now. 08:41 We just go to the refrigerator. 08:42 It's not like the old days where we had to 08:43 grow our food and go pull it out 08:45 and harvest it, then eat it. Yes 08:46 We just pull it out of the refrigerator, there it is, 08:48 freeze it, we put it into the microwave. 08:50 We've also had then phenomena of food that we made it 08:54 very small - you know we've concentrated food. 08:58 In the old days, for instance, 08:59 let's say you eat an apple, 09:02 and an apple - one bite might have about 15-16 calories in it. 09:06 Well you eat a sour apple, that might have less calories. 09:10 So you're going to go for the sweet apples, okay... 09:13 And so those apples are good for us, of course, 09:15 but people have noticed that our brain can 09:18 tell the difference between 09:19 1 calorie and 2 calories in a bite. 09:21 So there are these receptors in the brain 09:23 that scientists said - these are the dopamine, 09:25 these pleasure receptors that can tell this... 09:28 Well, the more I concentrate the food, 09:30 the more these dopamine pleasures will have to be fed. 09:33 So it's like taking a medicine- 09:34 a little bit will feed these receptors, 09:36 but sometimes you need a little bit more. 09:38 So all of a sudden, instead of eating an apple 09:40 with 15 or 16 calories a bite, 09:41 you eat a piece of chocolate with 300 calories a bite. 09:47 Right, or an apple, you know, you can get what is this 09:49 very concentrated so these dopamine receptors are happy now 09:53 and before you know it, it takes a little more 09:55 to keep them happy - 09:56 You just need this sort of chronic fix, 09:59 and that's why many people think overeating and eating 10:01 is an addiction - we definitely know it's a habit, 10:04 it's definitely a lifestyle change, 10:06 and the media hasn't helped us, 10:08 no one has helped us get off. 10:09 Unfortunately doctors are not trained for this. 10:11 You go in a visit for 5 minutes; 10:13 their not going to talk about how to lose weight, 10:15 but we eat these concentrated foods; 10:18 our stomach, the stretch receptors aren't stretched out, 10:20 and yet the dopamine guys are saying, 10:22 "Hey, I want more, more, more, feed me, feed me, I'm hungry" 10:25 So we get hungrier, we need more and more food, 10:28 and this is just a vicious cycle. 10:30 We have more stress in our life; 10:31 we look for somewhere to go; 10:32 we eat more food and you can see how the cycle 10:36 is gaining weight, so the solution is guess what? 10:39 You develop these things, 10:40 so I'm going to give you a pill for diabetes. 10:41 You can't sleep at night because of the extra weight; 10:43 I'm going to give you a pill to sleep. 10:44 Your joints hurt, I'm going to give you a pill. 10:46 You're anxious and don't feel good, I'm going to give you that 10:48 You have too much acid, here's a pill for that. 10:50 And the cycle is just terrible. 10:52 And we're not fixing this, so we have to re-think 10:54 the way we're dealing with weight management, 10:56 and meet people at a different level and try to work with them, 10:59 and let them know that it is a problem. 11:01 Now I'm not saying we have all the answers, 11:03 but we have to let people know that weight management 11:06 is a problem - there are answers but it's not the easiest thing. 11:09 It takes a lot of prayer, a lot of work, 11:11 a lot of education and it's just a journey 11:14 that we must start on. 11:15 You bring up a very interesting point there on the 11:17 concentration of food. 11:20 I read someplace that there is as many calories in a 11:24 teaspoon of corn oil as there is in 12 ears of corn. Yeah... 11:31 So if you had those 12 ears of corn, you probably couldn't 11:33 eat that much and you wouldn't even 11:34 come up with that many calories, 11:35 but that 1 teaspoon of corn oil that you put on your food 11:39 without evening thinking or maybe even a half a cup of 11:42 or olive oil or whatever - you put that stuff on there 11:44 HUGE amounts of calories in a very small amount of space. 11:47 Also another thing I heard - this is from Dr. Diehl 11:49 from the CHIP Program, 11:51 is that the fat content of today's animal products, 11:55 the steak you eat, the chicken, even the fish, 12:00 the pork and whatnot... 12:02 The fat content is 4 times as much as it used to be 12:05 100 years ago because of the way they process 12:08 the animals as they're growing up. 12:09 They put a lot of fat on there. 12:10 They put a lot of feed for them to eat 12:13 that makes them nice and fat - 4 times... 12:16 So when you eat a hamburger NOW, 12:17 you're getting 4 times the amount of fat 12:20 that you got 100 years ago eating the same hamburger 12:23 because of the way the meat is processed. 12:26 So the real demon here is PROCESSING. 12:29 The real demon here is concentrating these things, 12:32 and processing, then adding the 12:34 salt and the fat and all those things. 12:36 We need to be so careful whether we are Christian or not, 12:40 or whether we are an atheist, 12:41 or whether we are an agnostic, 12:42 or whether we are a Hindu or a Seventh-day Adventist 12:45 or a Baptist or Catholic, or whatever, 12:47 we need to be very careful when we eat because our food 12:50 is different; our lifestyle is different; 12:53 our level of exercise is different; 12:55 our level of STRESS is MUCH different than it used to be. 12:58 That's why we have to have weight management procedures 13:01 in place and we'll talk about that more on our return, 13:04 so everybody stay RIGHT where you are! |
