" 00:02:34.54\00:02:36.93 And this is a major issue that we talk about... 00:02:36.96\00:02:40.27 is how do we get people to lose weight, 00:02:40.30\00:02:44.17 and the reason we talk about this on this program is 00:02:44.20\00:02:46.39 ...you know, we want to talk about situations 00:02:46.42\00:02:49.05 that affect lots of people. 00:02:49.08\00:02:50.82 And unfortunately, weight, management and extra weight 00:02:50.85\00:02:53.23 affects lots of people... 00:02:53.26\00:02:54.58 So we have to talk about it; 00:02:54.61\00:02:55.72 we have to come up with a plan, 00:02:55.75\00:02:57.03 and we have to give them something that they 00:02:57.06\00:02:58.97 can have hope on - if nothing else, 00:02:59.00\00:03:00.40 at least to educate them if you have extra weight, 00:03:00.43\00:03:03.32 it can lead to these dangerous health problems, 00:03:03.35\00:03:05.50 and of course, what's near and dear to my heart 00:03:05.53\00:03:07.31 is cardiovascular disease. 00:03:07.34\00:03:09.10 So, it only makes sense is as weight goes up, 00:03:09.13\00:03:11.83 chronic problems are going to go up; 00:03:11.86\00:03:13.62 chronic medication use is going to go up... 00:03:13.65\00:03:15.75 Well I was going to say that everything you mentioned there 00:03:15.78\00:03:17.53 has a pill for it... everything you said. 00:03:17.56\00:03:19.37 Chronic medication use is going to go up, 00:03:19.40\00:03:21.74 and we're not really solving the problem of this... 00:03:21.77\00:03:24.91 And there are some programs that the people just want to 00:03:24.94\00:03:27.43 quit medication to solve weight loss management. 00:03:27.46\00:03:30.59 And there have been several pills that have been on, 00:03:30.62\00:03:32.72 and one that I used when I first started was called 00:03:32.75\00:03:36.33 "Fen-Phen" and I talked about it in my latest book, 00:03:36.36\00:03:39.41 "Medicines That Kill" 00:03:39.44\00:03:40.86 and Fen-Phen caused problems with heart valves, 00:03:40.89\00:03:44.68 and it had to be removed from the market. 00:03:44.71\00:03:46.78 Most of the weight management medicines that have been 00:03:46.81\00:03:49.41 out there, have been removed from the market. 00:03:49.44\00:03:51.72 There are 3 of them that are coming on very soon 00:03:51.75\00:03:54.30 that are going to be on the market, 00:03:54.33\00:03:55.79 and I think that those are going to... 00:03:55.82\00:03:57.77 hopefully they don't have problems, 00:03:57.81\00:03:59.46 but usually they do have problems. 00:03:59.49\00:04:01.11 We think about some of the other modern medicine 00:04:01.14\00:04:04.11 procedures that deal with weight management; 00:04:04.14\00:04:06.48 we talk about gastric bypass where they bypass around 00:04:06.51\00:04:10.12 your stomach, make a very small patch 00:04:10.15\00:04:12.29 so you can't eat very much. 00:04:12.32\00:04:14.07 That has lots of side effects too. 00:04:14.10\00:04:16.18 I have a friend that has that and he's running to the 00:04:16.21\00:04:18.70 bathroom all the time. 00:04:18.73\00:04:20.08 You know, he has all sorts of GI issues 00:04:20.11\00:04:23.45 because we weren't designed for that. 00:04:23.48\00:04:26.08 They sometimes put bands on your esophagus 00:04:26.11\00:04:28.52 that they can tighten up so the food can't get through. 00:04:28.55\00:04:31.27 Well that's not the best method either. 00:04:31.30\00:04:33.11 So the modern medicine approach to weight management 00:04:33.14\00:04:36.12 is not working. 00:04:36.15\00:04:37.44 Then we talk about all the diets that are out there. 00:04:37.47\00:04:40.47 You know, all the diets there... 00:04:40.50\00:04:41.81 There are lots of fad diets... 00:04:41.84\00:04:43.47 You know, you eat this amount. 00:04:43.50\00:04:44.64 You know, you've heard about the high protein diet. 00:04:44.67\00:04:46.97 Then next came a low protein diet. 00:04:47.00\00:04:48.96 High fat diet, low fat diet. 00:04:48.99\00:04:51.00 High carb diet, low fat carb diet. 00:04:51.03\00:04:52.97 And none of them have actually shown to help people 00:04:53.00\00:04:55.62 lose weight over the long haul. 00:04:55.65\00:04:57.32 And many of them have been proven to be 00:04:57.35\00:04:58.81 very dangerous for health. Yes, exactly 00:04:58.84\00:05:01.18 I mean, you may lose a few pounds, 00:05:01.21\00:05:02.51 but they only cost you your life! 00:05:02.54\00:05:04.61 And unfortunately, dealing with patients and people with 00:05:04.64\00:05:08.13 weight management problems, everyone wants a quick fix. 00:05:08.16\00:05:12.12 And, it's not a quick fix, it's a total lifestyle change; 00:05:12.15\00:05:16.61 it involves every part of our lives, 00:05:16.64\00:05:18.94 and that's why when I studied some people a few years ago 00:05:18.97\00:05:23.48 that had weight management problems, 00:05:23.51\00:05:25.55 in our study we found out that the key... 00:05:25.58\00:05:28.26 Everyone knows what they should do. 00:05:28.29\00:05:30.22 Everyone knows the food. 00:05:30.25\00:05:31.41 Everyone knows they should exercise, 00:05:31.44\00:05:32.73 and drink more water. 00:05:32.76\00:05:34.02 They should increase their metabolism. 00:05:34.05\00:05:35.73 They know the dangers of the pills for weight management loss 00:05:35.76\00:05:39.21 They know the dangers of the procedures, 00:05:39.24\00:05:40.89 but what was the key to those people that DID keep it off, 00:05:40.92\00:05:44.00 was RELATIONSHIPS. 00:05:44.03\00:05:46.49 Relationships that they had with each other, 00:05:46.52\00:05:48.90 encouraging relationships and also the relationship 00:05:48.93\00:05:51.78 with GOD - that gave them the power to make changes, 00:05:51.81\00:05:55.30 and to continue on that path to help them day in and day out - 00:05:55.33\00:05:58.50 because there are a lot of chemical changes involved 00:05:58.53\00:06:01.93 in weight management and the food we eat, 00:06:01.96\00:06:03.88 and dopamine pathways and pathways of addiction, 00:06:03.91\00:06:07.05 and habits that need to be broken, 00:06:07.08\00:06:09.04 and it really takes a God to give us the power 00:06:09.07\00:06:11.15 to do these things, Charles... 00:06:11.18\00:06:12.49 And that's why this condition 00:06:12.52\00:06:14.57 which is really a disease in itself or will produce disease, 00:06:14.60\00:06:18.76 is growing exponentially, and if you think about it, 00:06:18.79\00:06:22.05 you know - everyone is getting heavier, 00:06:22.08\00:06:24.60 nothing out there is working, 00:06:24.63\00:06:26.20 so should we look for a new path? 00:06:26.23\00:06:28.34 Should we look for a new plan? 00:06:28.37\00:06:30.17 Should there be a new approach? 00:06:30.20\00:06:31.93 And medications aren't going 00:06:31.96\00:06:33.28 to be that answer, in my opinion. 00:06:33.31\00:06:35.00 The fad diets aren't going to 00:06:35.03\00:06:36.22 be the answer, in my opinion. 00:06:36.25\00:06:38.30 We have to get back to what I call "natural remedies" 00:06:38.33\00:06:42.33 God's plan for weight management and put God into the equation 00:06:42.36\00:06:46.20 to help us lose this weight and to gradually 00:06:46.23\00:06:48.52 stay with this plan over a lifetime, 00:06:48.55\00:06:50.58 not just a short period of time. 00:06:50.61\00:06:52.50 You know, as I look at this situation and I look around 00:06:52.53\00:06:55.44 at people who are overweight, and I find them everywhere, 00:06:55.47\00:06:58.78 I find them in church, 00:06:58.81\00:07:00.33 I find them at parties, 00:07:00.36\00:07:03.36 I find them in television programs, 00:07:03.39\00:07:06.37 I find them everywhere. 00:07:06.40\00:07:07.43 It doesn't seem to be that FAITH - religion is the answer, 00:07:07.46\00:07:12.90 and why do you think that is? 00:07:12.93\00:07:15.14 You would think that people who worship God, 00:07:15.17\00:07:17.85 who love God, who attend church, 00:07:17.88\00:07:20.73 who go as missionaries, 00:07:20.76\00:07:22.79 who spend their time witnessing for God, 00:07:22.82\00:07:25.18 why aren't they slender? 00:07:25.21\00:07:27.17 What is missing in that relationship with their God? 00:07:27.20\00:07:30.81 Well, you know, there is some research that suggests 00:07:30.84\00:07:34.26 that some people have genetic propensities to be heavy. 00:07:34.29\00:07:38.01 But NOT 60% of the people in the world... 00:07:38.04\00:07:40.66 That's correct... And you know, there are 00:07:40.69\00:07:42.49 some people that are on medications 00:07:42.52\00:07:44.50 that make it impossible to lose weight; 00:07:44.53\00:07:46.33 some of the diabetic medicines make it very hard to lose weight 00:07:46.36\00:07:49.61 And there are some doctors that are not treating any 00:07:49.64\00:07:52.96 type 2 diabetes with medications 00:07:52.99\00:07:55.01 because medications make you more hungry. 00:07:55.04\00:07:56.78 But a lot of times people - 00:07:56.81\00:07:58.79 we've talked about this on previous programs, 00:07:58.82\00:08:01.04 it's the stress that we're living under, the world stress. 00:08:01.07\00:08:04.53 And someone looks for the answers to stress problems. 00:08:04.56\00:08:07.52 They want to have some endorphins, some dopamines, 00:08:07.55\00:08:09.88 something that makes them feel good, 00:08:09.91\00:08:11.66 something that enables them to cope, 00:08:11.69\00:08:13.73 and the easiest thing out there is... 00:08:13.76\00:08:16.56 "let's have some food" 00:08:16.59\00:08:17.69 You don't have to wait for the church service to run around, 00:08:17.72\00:08:19.84 you don't have to... No Okay 00:08:19.87\00:08:21.14 We know that the food is so easy, 00:08:21.17\00:08:23.17 the pleasure receptors go up. 00:08:23.20\00:08:25.21 It helps you feel better at the end of the long day. 00:08:25.24\00:08:28.02 We have this mind set, we don't eat for nutrition, 00:08:28.05\00:08:31.20 we eat for pleasure... There you go! 00:08:31.23\00:08:33.03 and everyone has fostered this. 00:08:33.06\00:08:35.38 Look at all the commercials, supersize me, 00:08:35.41\00:08:38.40 and how easy it is to get our food now. 00:08:38.43\00:08:41.09 We just go to the refrigerator. 00:08:41.12\00:08:42.52 It's not like the old days where we had to 00:08:42.55\00:08:43.70 grow our food and go pull it out 00:08:43.73\00:08:45.07 and harvest it, then eat it. Yes 00:08:45.10\00:08:46.54 We just pull it out of the refrigerator, there it is, 00:08:46.57\00:08:48.66 freeze it, we put it into the microwave. 00:08:48.69\00:08:50.95 We've also had then phenomena of food that we made it 00:08:50.98\00:08:54.50 very small - you know we've concentrated food. 00:08:54.53\00:08:58.06 In the old days, for instance, 00:08:58.09\00:08:59.39 let's say you eat an apple, 00:08:59.42\00:09:02.35 and an apple - one bite might have about 15-16 calories in it. 00:09:02.38\00:09:06.18 Well you eat a sour apple, that might have less calories. 00:09:06.21\00:09:10.31 So you're going to go for the sweet apples, okay... 00:09:10.34\00:09:13.13 And so those apples are good for us, of course, 00:09:13.16\00:09:15.91 but people have noticed that our brain can 00:09:15.94\00:09:18.85 tell the difference between 00:09:18.88\00:09:19.96 1 calorie and 2 calories in a bite. 00:09:19.99\00:09:21.96 So there are these receptors in the brain 00:09:21.99\00:09:23.79 that scientists said - these are the dopamine, 00:09:23.82\00:09:25.43 these pleasure receptors that can tell this... 00:09:25.46\00:09:28.09 Well, the more I concentrate the food, 00:09:28.12\00:09:30.32 the more these dopamine pleasures will have to be fed. 00:09:30.35\00:09:33.50 So it's like taking a medicine- 00:09:33.53\00:09:34.60 a little bit will feed these receptors, 00:09:34.63\00:09:36.70 but sometimes you need a little bit more. 00:09:36.73\00:09:38.29 So all of a sudden, instead of eating an apple 00:09:38.32\00:09:40.04 with 15 or 16 calories a bite, 00:09:40.07\00:09:41.92 you eat a piece of chocolate with 300 calories a bite. 00:09:41.95\00:09:47.10 Right, or an apple, you know, you can get what is this 00:09:47.13\00:09:49.45 very concentrated so these dopamine receptors are happy now 00:09:49.48\00:09:53.50 and before you know it, it takes a little more 00:09:53.53\00:09:55.27 to keep them happy - 00:09:55.31\00:09:56.35 You just need this sort of chronic fix, 00:09:56.38\00:09:59.22 and that's why many people think overeating and eating 00:09:59.25\00:10:01.95 is an addiction - we definitely know it's a habit, 00:10:01.98\00:10:04.39 it's definitely a lifestyle change, 00:10:04.42\00:10:06.46 and the media hasn't helped us, 00:10:06.49\00:10:08.01 no one has helped us get off. 00:10:08.04\00:10:09.35 Unfortunately doctors are not trained for this. 00:10:09.38\00:10:11.47 You go in a visit for 5 minutes; 00:10:11.50\00:10:13.42 their not going to talk about how to lose weight, 00:10:13.45\00:10:15.58 but we eat these concentrated foods; 00:10:15.61\00:10:18.00 our stomach, the stretch receptors aren't stretched out, 00:10:18.03\00:10:20.96 and yet the dopamine guys are saying, 00:10:20.99\00:10:22.40 "Hey, I want more, more, more, feed me, feed me, I'm hungry" 00:10:22.43\00:10:25.59 So we get hungrier, we need more and more food, 00:10:25.62\00:10:28.32 and this is just a vicious cycle. 00:10:28.35\00:10:30.01 We have more stress in our life; 00:10:30.04\00:10:31.45 we look for somewhere to go; 00:10:31.48\00:10:32.88 we eat more food and you can see how the cycle 00:10:32.91\00:10:36.13 is gaining weight, so the solution is guess what? 00:10:36.16\00:10:39.17 You develop these things, 00:10:39.21\00:10:40.30 so I'm going to give you a pill for diabetes. 00:10:40.34\00:10:41.77 You can't sleep at night because of the extra weight; 00:10:41.81\00:10:43.44 I'm going to give you a pill to sleep. 00:10:43.47\00:10:44.66 Your joints hurt, I'm going to give you a pill. 00:10:44.69\00:10:46.15 You're anxious and don't feel good, I'm going to give you that 00:10:46.18\00:10:48.55 You have too much acid, here's a pill for that. 00:10:48.58\00:10:50.31 And the cycle is just terrible. 00:10:50.34\00:10:52.05 And we're not fixing this, so we have to re-think 00:10:52.08\00:10:54.70 the way we're dealing with weight management, 00:10:54.73\00:10:56.67 and meet people at a different level and try to work with them, 00:10:56.70\00:10:59.93 and let them know that it is a problem. 00:10:59.96\00:11:01.61 Now I'm not saying we have all the answers, 00:11:01.64\00:11:03.36 but we have to let people know that weight management 00:11:03.39\00:11:06.27 is a problem - there are answers but it's not the easiest thing. 00:11:06.30\00:11:09.69 It takes a lot of prayer, a lot of work, 00:11:09.72\00:11:11.73 a lot of education and it's just a journey 00:11:11.76\00:11:14.35 that we must start on. 00:11:14.38\00:11:15.66 You bring up a very interesting point there on the 00:11:15.69\00:11:17.45 concentration of food. 00:11:17.48\00:11:20.24 I read someplace that there is as many calories in a 00:11:20.27\00:11:24.43 teaspoon of corn oil as there is in 12 ears of corn. Yeah... 00:11:24.46\00:11:31.03 So if you had those 12 ears of corn, you probably couldn't 00:11:31.06\00:11:33.66 eat that much and you wouldn't even 00:11:33.69\00:11:34.88 come up with that many calories, 00:11:34.91\00:11:35.94 but that 1 teaspoon of corn oil that you put on your food 00:11:35.97\00:11:39.79 without evening thinking or maybe even a half a cup of 00:11:39.82\00:11:42.08 or olive oil or whatever - you put that stuff on there 00:11:42.11\00:11:44.68 HUGE amounts of calories in a very small amount of space. 00:11:44.71\00:11:47.50 Also another thing I heard - this is from Dr. Diehl 00:11:47.53\00:11:49.96 from the CHIP Program, 00:11:49.99\00:11:51.17 is that the fat content of today's animal products, 00:11:51.20\00:11:55.83 the steak you eat, the chicken, even the fish, 00:11:55.86\00:12:00.67 the pork and whatnot... 00:12:00.70\00:12:02.24 The fat content is 4 times as much as it used to be 00:12:02.27\00:12:05.24 100 years ago because of the way they process 00:12:05.27\00:12:08.13 the animals as they're growing up. 00:12:08.16\00:12:09.35 They put a lot of fat on there. 00:12:09.39\00:12:10.55 They put a lot of feed for them to eat 00:12:10.58\00:12:13.40 that makes them nice and fat - 4 times... 00:12:13.43\00:12:16.14 So when you eat a hamburger NOW, 00:12:16.17\00:12:17.81 you're getting 4 times the amount of fat 00:12:17.84\00:12:20.58 that you got 100 years ago eating the same hamburger 00:12:20.61\00:12:23.95 because of the way the meat is processed. 00:12:23.98\00:12:26.18 So the real demon here is PROCESSING. 00:12:26.21\00:12:29.59 The real demon here is concentrating these things, 00:12:29.62\00:12:32.69 and processing, then adding the 00:12:32.72\00:12:34.20 salt and the fat and all those things. 00:12:34.23\00:12:36.82 We need to be so careful whether we are Christian or not, 00:12:36.85\00:12:40.15 or whether we are an atheist, 00:12:40.18\00:12:41.54 or whether we are an agnostic, 00:12:41.57\00:12:42.83 or whether we are a Hindu or a Seventh-day Adventist 00:12:42.86\00:12:45.39 or a Baptist or Catholic, or whatever, 00:12:45.42\00:12:47.08 we need to be very careful when we eat because our food 00:12:47.11\00:12:50.51 is different; our lifestyle is different; 00:12:50.54\00:12:53.08 our level of exercise is different; 00:12:53.11\00:12:55.20 our level of STRESS is MUCH different than it used to be. 00:12:55.23\00:12:58.59 That's why we have to have weight management procedures 00:12:58.62\00:13:01.92 in place and we'll talk about that more on our return, 00:13:01.95\00:13:04.54 so everybody stay RIGHT where you are! 00:13:04.58\00:13:06.52
