00:01 Welcome back to the program.
00:02 I'm Charles Mills here with cardiologist, Dr. James Marcum
00:04 We're talking about healing our hearts naturally,
00:07 and you've made the very important point, Dr. Marcum,
00:10 that "natural" does not necessarily mean
00:13 something that's other than medical.
00:16 It means that this is something that GOD has put in place for us
00:20 something that God has in mind;
00:22 a law that God placed into our existence during creation week.
00:27 One of the questions that came to
00:29 heartwiseministries. org
00:30 folds right into this.
00:32 Someone asked, "What are the best ways to
00:34 lower my blood pressure?"
00:36 And, let's talk about that...
00:37 What did God have in mind for naturally lowering
00:40 blood pressure? That's a great question...
00:42 Well, let's look at the Garden of Eden,
00:44 and also let's look at the science behind it.
00:47 Well we know that people that are active, that are working
00:50 that are exercising movement lowers blood pressure.
00:53 No pills necessary... No - science proves that.
00:56 And a lot of people have high blood pressure
00:58 because they're not moving.
00:59 The endothelium does not dilate like we've talked about;
01:03 we gain extra weight which puts stress on our bodies,
01:05 so exercise is one natural way.
01:08 We also know that the food we eat...
01:10 At the Garden of Eden, God gave us a plant-based diet to eat.
01:13 We know that as we've eaten more and more fat,
01:16 processed foods through the years, guess what?
01:19 Our blood pressure has gone up, cardiovascular has gone up...
01:21 The research, science is proving a plant-based diet
01:25 helps lower your blood pressure.
01:26 Rest - we know that in this stress-filled world,
01:31 people aren't taking a weekly rest;
01:33 people aren't resting well at night...
01:35 Well, we know that people that don't rest well from sleep apnea
01:39 have higher levels of adrenalin, higher blood pressures...
01:41 So we know that when people don't rest well,
01:44 both weekly or nightly, their blood pressure,
01:46 cardiovascular disease, endothelial disease,
01:48 their risks all go up.
01:50 We know that people that don't, we've talked about this before,
01:53 worship - when you worship the wrong types of things,
01:56 that could affect your stress levels as well.
01:59 We were made to worship the true God,
02:01 and we've shown that people that worship,
02:04 that have meditation...
02:05 You know, we've shown the deep-breathing,
02:07 when that body relaxes, when the stress chemistries
02:10 go off, when the front part of the brain takes over,
02:13 makes these endorphins that help us,
02:16 make these dopamines that relaxes our body,
02:19 when we cast out all this fear and anxiety,
02:22 that that also helps lower the tension...
02:24 And anything that lowers stress in our lives,
02:27 anything that lowers stress...
02:29 You talked about your driving to Washington - Yes, yes
02:31 We talked about any chronic pain can cause high blood pressure.
02:34 That puts a stress on the system,
02:36 but a lot of things that people don't realize is little things
02:39 like television. Television!
02:41 I think television stresses people out.. you know.
02:43 You know - when they watch a violent show,
02:45 you know that's stressful for some people.
02:47 When you watch the news and hear all the bad things...
02:50 We weren't made to know what is going 3,000 miles,
02:53 what someone else did that bad - that all goes in our mind,
02:56 it all creates a chemical reaction.
02:58 So when all this is bombarded with us and we have all the
03:01 media that is around us and texting and cell phones,
03:04 and busy jobs and not resting at night,
03:07 sooner or later, our stress level continues to climb
03:10 and not only do we have high blood pressure,
03:12 but we also have all these skips.
03:14 So remember, we were sort of designed for a little bit
03:18 simpler of a life.
03:20 If we would have needed all this stuff at the very beginning
03:22 don't you think God would have given it to us at creation?
03:25 He gave us what we needed...
03:27 We've created a lot of stuff that MAYBE we don't need...
03:31 And as we've brought stuff into the equation,
03:33 there comes from chemical consequences.
03:36 So those are some simple NATURAL ways
03:38 you can do to help lower your blood pressure.
03:40 You know, a lot of people listening to that list
03:42 that you just gave and they say,
03:43 "Well okay, I will try #3, or I will try #4"
03:48 And we've got to say that anything you do
03:51 is going to be helpful, but if you want to enjoy
03:54 release from the problems that we're facing,
03:58 you really need to do most if not all of them.
04:01 Would I be on the right track here? Yeah
04:02 I mean, everything helps, but you've got to do them
04:04 and you've got to do them consistently,
04:06 and you've got to do a lot of them.
04:07 But I found some people, Charles
04:08 they just can do one thing at a time,
04:11 and if they stick with it, they feel better,
04:13 and the next thing - the place I start is
04:16 try to get into a relationship with their Creator.
04:19 Let Him come into your life and tell you and help you
04:22 do these things so you don't have to do it all by yourself.
04:25 Come into that relationship and He could say,
04:27 "Well, maybe I should drink more water, eat more better,"
04:29 and as you do that, you'll feel Him working in your life,
04:31 your chemistry will be changing.
04:34 Now you have something here on the desk that I want to
04:36 just hold up so everyone can see it because there are a lot
04:39 of questions about this particular device.
04:41 This is a pacemaker and we hear a lot about people
04:45 getting pacemakers put into their bodies...
04:48 When do we know that we need to have a pacemaker?
04:52 What are the indications that it's pacemaker time?
04:54 Well we talked a lot about skips hearts...
04:56 You know skips usually aren't dangerous as long as someone
04:59 is not passing out.
05:01 But prolonged fast rhythms can be dangerous;
05:04 prolonged slow rhythms can be dangerous...
05:06 And again, if the rhythm is going slow,
05:08 usually it has a symptom.
05:11 If the heart rhythm is going too slow,
05:13 sometimes people get dizzy, they're fatigued,
05:15 they pass out.
05:17 We tell this by putting monitors on us to say,
05:19 "Wow Charles, your heart was only going 30,
05:21 and it did not speed up"
05:23 "We think you might need a pacemaker. "
05:25 This is a great place for modern medicine.
05:28 You know, of course, we want to make sure your thyroid
05:30 is not causing it to have...
05:31 Now is this beyond the opportunity for
05:33 natural to help out? Yes it is...
05:36 There's something physically wrong with the body.
05:38 There is something physically wrong that is going on.
05:41 It might be a degenerative disease;
05:43 the wires of the heart, the natural pacemaker
05:45 just about getting old and be wearing out.
05:47 Now sometimes, the thyroid can make it go slow.
05:50 Certain medications can make it go slow.
05:53 So we want to make sure the patient is not on those.
05:55 But if they are not on those, there are no other causes,
05:57 sometimes the body just wears out.
06:00 Other systems wear out - thyroid wears out,
06:02 but we can replace the thyroid almost...
06:04 Or are injured, they wear out or are injured - an accident.
06:06 Another thing that can happen is the battery of the heart
06:08 just goes slower and slower.
06:10 Before this happened, people passed away sooner.
06:13 But we now have modern technology;
06:15 we can keep a heart going at a certain speed
06:17 by implanting a pacemaker.
06:19 This is one of the greatest places for medical technology.
06:22 I had a minister, not too long ago, that his pacemaker
06:26 wore out at a very young age.
06:27 His natural pacemaker... Yeah
06:28 And he talked to me - "Is there anything I can do
06:30 naturally to replace it?
06:32 I said, "No, there's really not
06:33 anything to replace what's worn out,
06:35 but we do have a pacemaker. "
06:36 So he's got a pacemaker;
06:37 he's still continuing in his ministry.
06:40 If he didn't have that pacemaker,
06:41 eventually his heart would have gone slower and slower
06:43 and slower and eventually would have stopped.
06:46 So pacemakers are a great example of a
06:49 great place for modern medicine.
06:51 Now let's talk a little bit more about this pacemaker.
06:54 I love the technical aspect of medicine.
06:56 You make an incision someplace on the chest,
06:59 and you just slip this guy right inside there and there's wires
07:01 It goes underneath the skin and there are 2 wires that we run
07:04 into the heart; one does the pacing,
07:06 and one also does the sensing.
07:08 Sometimes if your heart goes above a certain speed,
07:11 we don't need to pace it.
07:12 Sometimes it might just drop below a certain speed at times.
07:15 Then sometimes, every beat needs to be paced.
07:18 The battery part usually lasts about 7 years,
07:21 and then we replace this part, we leave the wires in,
07:24 we replace this part and put a new one in.
07:26 So you have to make the incision again, open it up,
07:28 take it out, put it in and then...
07:29 Just like a car battery, except we have
07:31 to go through the incision place...
07:32 When you get the pacemaker replaced,
07:34 it's much easier than the first because the first time,
07:36 we have to position the wires in the correct positions
07:38 in the heart and usually, depending on what type of
07:41 rhythm problem you have, one goes in the top part
07:43 that is the atrium and then one goes in the bottom
07:45 in the ventricle and those are the right side of the heart.
07:48 I am amazed at modern medicine,
07:50 I really am, because it has such an important place
07:54 in our lives and has such an important part to play,
07:57 but we've got to know when to play it - that's the thing.
08:00 The balance - we have to make sure that we understand that.
08:02 There are natural things we can do and God has put
08:05 natural laws for us to follow that can bring about
08:07 AMAZING results...
08:08 But there comes a TIME, there may be an event
08:11 that requires that modern medicine step in...
08:14 And I'm a firm believer that God created modern medicine
08:18 to be there for those times
08:19 because we are living in a very unnatural world!
08:21 We are living in a world of sin where things are damaged,
08:24 and where hurt happens...
08:25 And when we say "modern medicine is bad,
08:29 natural is good," we're making a big mistake
08:31 because God has made available these modern
08:33 wonders like these pacemakers.
08:36 When God puts these in the mind of someone
08:38 or the inventor someplace and this pacemaker is made for us,
08:42 that's an answer from God and we can praise God for it.
08:45 But before we run to modern medicine
08:48 for every ill that we have, we look for that pill,
08:50 and so they'll send us a bill and get rid of our ills,
08:52 we need to think - what can I do naturally?
08:55 Now of course, we need to talk about this...
08:58 There are some dangers involved
09:00 with taking some of these medications,
09:01 and this is a question that came into
09:03 heartwiseministries. org
09:04 "What are the dangers of blood pressure medications?"
09:07 And there's no medication for pacemaking, right?
09:10 No, no - no medicine, not long-term, okay?
09:13 If there was, it would probably have been invented,
09:15 and it would have kept the person on the medicine
09:17 for a long period of time.
09:18 But medicines for blood pressure...
09:21 you know, unfortunately, many people are on
09:23 medicines for blood pressure and they don't even know
09:25 why they have high blood pressure.
09:27 So blood pressure medicines all have risk.
09:29 There's a type of blood pressure medicine that takes sodium out,
09:32 salt out of your body, and some of these medicines
09:35 take potassium out of your body,
09:37 and when you take too much sodium and potassium
09:39 out of the body, you could get dehydrated
09:41 or your potassium could go low.
09:43 So getting dehydrated could make you dizzy and pass out.
09:46 It could hurt your kidneys.
09:47 Low potassium could cause a funny heart rhythm.
09:50 One of the most serious problems with blood pressure is
09:53 the blood pressure going too low.
09:55 So the blood pressure might get too low,
09:57 you do not get enough blood to your head,
09:59 you might get dizzy, you might pass out
10:01 ESPECIALLY if you might be dehydrated
10:04 which also causes the blood pressure to go low.
10:07 All the blood pressure medicines can cause you to be fatigued,
10:11 and there are lots of other side effects.
10:13 Some of the blood pressure medicines also slow down
10:15 your heart - so your heart can't speed up as fast.
10:18 So every medicine has a risk as well as a benefit,
10:22 and that's why you have to talk to your doctor - what's the risk
10:24 But the biggest risk I see with blood pressure medicines
10:27 are the side effects like fatigue and tiredness,
10:30 low blood pressure, the electrolyte problems
10:33 if it's one that takes fluid out of your body,
10:34 and sometimes you even have potassium
10:36 if it's one of the diuretic-type medicines.
10:38 So that's just a few, but yes, blood pressure
10:41 medicines have to be treated with respect.
10:43 But first, I want to encourage people...
10:45 you have to know if you truly have high blood pressure,
10:47 and if there's a cause that you can do something about
10:50 to have a natural remedy.
10:51 For instance, if you have too much sodium in your body,
10:54 if you can quit eating processed foods and go to a healthy diet,
10:57 sometimes the blood pressure will come down just like that.
11:00 You know, Dr. Hans Diehl, he's a good friend of yours
11:02 and mine too - Dr. Hans Diehl of the CHIP Program
11:04 has mentioned a nice little test that you can have
11:07 when you buy a processed food,
11:09 if you insist on eating a processed food,
11:11 and some processed foods, you know, that have been into
11:14 cans or frozen whatnot are fine.
11:16 What you do is you look at the label and you find
11:19 processed foods where the sodium count is equal to or lower
11:24 than the calorie count.
11:25 If this product has 90 calories, then you don't want to have
11:29 anymore than 90 mg of sodium in this thing.
11:32 You will need to find that sodium count LOWER
11:34 or the same as the calorie count.
11:38 Kind of a nice way of, when you're shopping,
11:39 to look and see if you are getting something
11:41 with too much sodium in it,
11:42 and that's very easy to do in processed foods.
11:44 Again, the sodium problem is usually not from the shaker
11:47 on the table that you have there.
11:49 It's usually from the processed foods that you eat,
11:51 and you have to watch out for that.
11:53 So if you want to lower your blood pressure,
11:55 there are some things that we can do naturally,
11:56 and if you want to keep that arrhythmia from happening,
11:59 unfortunately you need to have modern medicine
12:02 step in under those circumstances possibly...
12:04 Rhythms - if you have a dangerous rhythm,
12:07 usually you're passing out, dizzy, it's prolonged.
12:10 That needs to be checked on pretty quickly.
12:12 We'll take a short break and when we come back,
12:15 we need to talk to the Master Physician,
12:18 that Wonderful, no-waiting required, no forms to fill out,
12:23 nobody in front of you, the Man who will sit with you,
12:27 and listen to all of your problems and give you
12:29 encouraging words and things that you can do...
12:31 We'll talk to that Master Physician
12:33 on our return, so everybody stay right where you are.
12:43 We've been talking about natural ways to treat
12:46 heart disease, specifically focusing today on
12:49 hypertension and a little bit about rhythms,
12:51 but the principles we've talked about today go for entire health
12:56 We want to have natural remedies that's God's way,
12:59 and sometimes we need to move one step at a time,
13:02 but when we move one step at a time,
13:04 we have to keep moving.
13:06 We do one thing and then we have
13:08 to find out something else.
13:09 If we don't keep moving, we can't keep enjoying the
13:11 chemical benefits from coming back to God's plan.
13:15 So we want you to move on a path, on a road to good health,
13:19 and that road is continuous movement,
13:21 trying to improve each step of the way
13:23 with God leading you and helping you.
13:25 A couple of things I want you to keep in mind today...
13:28 that if you might have high blood pressure,
13:30 get it checked to make sure you really have it.
13:32 A lot of people don't have high blood pressure.
13:35 If you do have high blood pressure,
13:36 find out the reason WHY.
13:38 If you can treat the reason why,
13:40 sometimes you won't need to take a medication.
13:43 However, some people do need to be on medications,
13:46 and it must be monitored very closely.
13:48 Well, we want to pray with you before we sign off today.
13:51 Let's all bow our heads...
13:52 Heavenly Father... As we come to You today,
13:55 we want Your natural remedies for our health problems,
13:59 and we want to take one step after another step
14:02 on this pathway with You leading us along this path
14:05 to better health.
14:06 We want to thank You for being our God,
14:08 and our Ultimate Physician.
14:11 Thank you for joining us today on the "Ultimate Prescription"
14:15 And if you might have questions or concerns,
14:17 we want to invite you to go to our website that is
14:20 heartwiseministries. org
14:22 It is through your questions and comments that we
14:24 determine what our programs are going to be about.
14:27 Now as we go today, I want to wish you
14:29 walk with God, help Him lead you on that
14:32 ever continuing path to great health.
