00:02 I'm Charles Mills we are here with our Dr. James Marcum.
00:04 We're talking about hearts today.
00:05 And more specifically we're talking about
00:08 how to care for your heart,
00:11 how to take care of your heart the natural way.
00:14 And Dr. Marcum, I understand
00:15 a lot of people come into your office
00:16 asking you that very question.
00:18 How can I do things naturally?
00:20 Yeah, and it's very interesting Charles,
00:22 because I have so many who has high cholesterol.
00:25 And they'll come in the office and say,
00:26 I don't want to take
00:27 a cholesterol lowering medication, a stent.
00:29 And they say I want to do something natural way.
00:32 And I say, well, you know what do you want?
00:34 You know, they think natural was another pill
00:36 or another herb or something like veggies,
00:38 rice or guggul gum or something like that.
00:40 I say, well, natural is God's way
00:42 because you can lower your cholesterol that way too.
00:44 Or they have high blood pressure, you know.
00:46 I don't want to take a blood pressure pill
00:47 I want to do it naturally.
00:49 Or I don't want to this,
00:50 I want to take this natural remedy.
00:52 Well, I want everyone to think out there
00:54 that natural is God's way.
00:57 Let's do things God's way and these other things
00:59 aren't so natural but sometimes
01:00 you'll need it. Yes.
01:01 And that's sort of a different approach
01:04 that in the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
01:06 Natural is God's way at first
01:09 and then we might need extra things on top of that. Yeah.
01:12 It would seem that that would make sense
01:14 because we are having the problem that we have.
01:17 We are having the heart disease,
01:20 the arthrosclerosis the problem is with our bodies
01:24 because we're living unnaturally.
01:26 We're not living the way God intended
01:29 and the beauty of it is when God created us
01:32 He put together some natural laws
01:36 that dictate how we can live a healthy life.
01:40 And those natural laws are founded where?
01:42 Where do we go searching for those?
01:43 Oh, you know, you'll find them in the Bible.
01:45 They're filled with that in the Bible
01:46 and but I spend a lot of time
01:48 with is proving that these natural laws
01:51 have real chemistry behind it.
01:53 You know, eating the right foods,
01:54 exercising, being outside there is real chemistry behind that.
01:57 Just like as there is chemistry behind pills.
02:00 But what I found out about the natural chemistry
02:02 whether it be brain chemistry or worship chemistry
02:05 that affects the entire body. Yes.
02:07 It's just like disease infects entire body.
02:10 So you'll treat the whole body where as individual,
02:13 you know, pills and supplements just really affect one system.
02:17 They don't sort of get a global problem.
02:19 And I think we describe cardiovascular disease
02:22 as a global problem. Yes absolutely.
02:24 So for global problem you need natural remedies
02:27 and let God's remedies unless you're having symptoms.
02:30 And if you are having symptoms
02:31 then that's where is the place for modern medicine.
02:33 And perhaps we can change things in our life.
02:37 So you don't need as much as of these modern medicines
02:39 and modern treatments and we can have more natural treatments,
02:42 God's treatment.
02:43 But you know that's our popular choice.
02:45 Everyone wants a quick fix.
02:47 And then makes absolutely no money for anybody.
02:49 No money but everyone wants
02:51 to easiest quickest way. Yeah.
02:52 And when the media is bombarding you when you go to--
02:55 with this television program
02:56 and it says you have to have this,
02:57 this or this or this technology or look at the media.
03:00 You know, they don't-- they're going to triumphant
03:02 the newest thing out there.
03:04 Then the newest procedure, the genetic pills,
03:06 the laser revascularizations.
03:08 The newest, the newest, greatest latest--
03:10 they're not going to necessarily triumph
03:12 these natural remedies God's remedies.
03:14 It seems like we're sort of pointing away from that.
03:17 Because, people don't want to think about fixing problems.
03:20 There is no money in fixing problems
03:22 because the person keeps coming back.
03:25 You know, right now bypass surgery runs out $100,000,
03:30 a stent 40 to 60 depending on how many stents you get.
03:34 So if anyone comes to me and they've had those things
03:36 or even I prescribe these in some circumstances
03:39 I want to say, no.
03:40 That doesn't stop there.
03:41 We want to get it the cause of the problems
03:43 and we want to talk about natural remedies first
03:46 and then build on that.

04:10 Okay, this, this first one here.
04:13 I first heard these words used in a, you know, some material
04:17 I saw from Caldwell Esselstyn from the Cleveland clinic.
04:21 How can I improve my level of nitrous oxide? Yeah.
04:24 What is that and why is this person asking that question?
04:27 Well this is a very important question.
04:29 And this has come from a very educated person
04:32 that came to our website.
04:33 And nitrous oxide is a substance that the body makes itself
04:38 that makes the arteries bigger, okay.
04:41 That gets the arteries from this dimension to that dimension.
04:44 And it goes up when we're doing things
04:46 because our muscles and certain things
04:47 need more blood at certain times.
04:49 When your brain is like bustling,
04:51 I'm hoping your nitrous oxides up, Charles.
04:54 So you get more blood to your brain so you can think. Yes.
04:57 When other parts of the body are working
04:58 more the endothelium gets larger.
05:01 And when the endothelium gets larger it works better.
05:04 Now if you have arthrosclerosis in artery,
05:08 I mean, if you have a blockage
05:09 and I believe we have some blockages there--
05:10 Yes we do.
05:12 Let's take a look at this. Yeah.
05:13 Let's say this is an artery right here
05:16 that doesn't have much blockage.
05:17 You know, that is a very healthy artery
05:19 but at the same time if that organ
05:21 that is supplying needs more it has the ability to--
05:24 It actually physically gets enlarged.
05:25 It gets enlarges because nitrous oxide
05:28 is the substance it does that. Yes, okay.
05:30 So nitrous oxide is good. Okay.
05:32 It's good fro the body. All right.
05:34 Things that make more nitrous oxide
05:36 or things like exercise-- when you exercise
05:39 the arteries get bigger. Larger, okay.
05:41 Yeah that's a natural remedy.
05:43 When you eat right up, you know,
05:45 especially when Dr. Esselstyn is showing a plant based diet
05:49 those arteries get bigger.
05:51 Dr. Esselstyn, some of them, they've some researchers.
05:54 I don't' think he did
05:55 but others have done it studying a brachial artery.
05:58 And people that eat fatty meals
06:00 don't have the ability to make nitrous oxides
06:03 so there're arteries can't get bigger, they're stiffer.
06:05 So if you have a bad blockage in an artery.
06:08 Let's take a look at this.
06:09 Here is the same artery
06:10 after a few cheese burgers I guess. Yeah.
06:12 A few lifetimes of cheese burgers.
06:13 Yeah a lifetime and if you have that type of blockage,
06:17 you know, you want your artery to get bigger. Yeah.
06:19 So that, you know, so that 80% blockage
06:21 is not as compromising. Yeah, yeah.
06:23 To the organ that it supplies.
06:25 But if you, if you don't-- things like exercise,
06:28 things like eating right those make nitrous oxides
06:30 which is more valuable than some of the pills.
06:32 In fact, we give a medicine called nitroglycerine
06:36 that does the same thing temporarily.
06:38 Well, it only makes senses that I would want to
06:40 make nitrous oxide all the time. Absolutely.
06:43 And we can do that by eating a healthy diet.
06:45 We know that fatty foods paralyze the ability of our body
06:48 to make nitrous oxide.
06:50 We know that things like exercise can help with that.
06:53 We also know that stress makes the arteries smaller.
06:57 They constrict, okay.
06:59 So we don't want a lot of stress.
07:01 We want a lot of more relaxation of the arteries
07:04 so that they can get bigger
07:05 so the organs can get more blood.
07:07 I mean can you imagine that if you have an artery
07:08 that is this clogged and then you get stressed.
07:11 Yes, oh yeah.
07:12 So what's there is going to be squeezed anyway. Exactly.
07:14 So if you have stress on a system
07:17 and if you have the bad diet on your system
07:19 and you have that to begin with
07:21 you're going to be having some chest pain
07:22 if you have blockages in your heart.
07:24 So I have had numerous patients that have disease
07:27 that we can't' do anything with.
07:28 The arteries are too small to bypass
07:30 or they've already had bypassed.
07:32 And I put them on a plant based diet
07:34 and a small exercise program.
07:36 In a short of period of time they can do more
07:38 before they have chest pain because those arteries
07:41 are now gotten bigger because the natural,
07:43 nitrous oxide has allowed the body to get more blood.
07:46 That is what I call a natural treatment
07:49 for coronary artery disease.
07:51 I just realized something that I haven't thought it before
07:54 and you're absolutely right.
07:55 A lot of people say, you know, I have 80% blockage.
07:58 I have 85-95% blockage.
08:00 I need to go immediately and get a bypass.
08:03 But if you start changing your diet
08:05 and get this nitrous oxide in there
08:08 even though you have the blockage the artery itself
08:12 is able to be flexible and enlarge a little bit
08:15 so more blood can get through
08:16 as you wait for the natural things to God given things
08:20 to try to get rid of some of this plaque.
08:21 Exactly, and another thing that,
08:23 you know, that has to do with the substance
08:25 that makes nitrous oxide is called L-arginine,
08:29 okay and we get that in some of the foods we eat.
08:32 You know broccoli things like that have high arginine
08:34 and that's the precursors or body must have that
08:36 to make the nitrous oxide.
08:38 Okay. And we don't want to paralyze our arteries.
08:40 So this is one of many natural remedies
08:43 for coronary heart disease
08:44 and you have that changes the chemistry
08:46 not only of this blood vessels
08:48 but every blood vessel throughout the body.
08:51 Not just the heart, it helps everything
08:53 when you do simple remedies like exercise,
08:55 eating the right foods,
08:56 increasing your nitrous oxide level,
08:58 decreasing your stress level.
09:00 It's that interesting?
09:02 Now that's a wonderful and that's absolutely good to.
09:03 I hope you have answered that question,
09:05 how can I improve my level of nitrous oxide.
09:07 I think we did and that is good news,
09:09 that is good news.
09:10 Now here is a question that goes along with it
09:12 and probably relates to someone
09:15 that may be having some blockage here.
09:18 "Can I exercise too much," is the question.
09:21 And it would seem to me that if you have an artery
09:23 that's wide open it will be one answer.
09:26 But if you have a artery
09:27 that's mostly blocked there will be another answer.
09:28 Am I on the right track here? You're on the right track.
09:30 But you know if you're not having symptoms,
09:32 you know, that, you know,
09:34 we want to exercise to have as a natural remedy
09:36 for numerous diseases.
09:37 Yeah. It helps the blood flow in the brain and everywhere.
09:40 But can a person that's not having symptoms
09:43 or doesn't have you know bad blockages,
09:45 exercised too much.
09:46 The answer is yes. You can exercise too much.
09:50 In fact they've done studies in middle age people.
09:52 Now you probably won't hit that middle age that's from 40-60.
09:56 If I won't hit that yet, but some of them out there
09:58 might be middle aged.
09:59 I'm middle aged. You are very kind to think.
10:02 Yeah, but if you're middle aged
10:04 and you do this like triathlons
10:06 and run hours and hours and,
10:08 you know, the thirty miles runs.
10:10 That creates a stress on your body
10:12 and they call that oxidative stress.
10:14 And there is been some studies that are saying,
10:16 if you do too much you actually going
10:18 to these anaerobic metabolism you start breaking down things.
10:22 And that's very stressful on the body.
10:24 Almost, the equivalent of cardiovascular risk
10:26 is smoking a pack of cigarettes.
10:28 So if you are an excessive exerciser.
10:31 Going into anaerobic metabolism
10:34 that can put stress on the body.
10:36 Yeah, and you don't want that kind of stress.
10:38 So yes, you can exercise too much
10:39 and every body is a little bit different.
10:42 Now where do I start on someone
10:43 that's not having symptoms?
10:45 Yeah. Well, I usually say, well, listen.
10:46 Just start wherever you can
10:48 and build on that as long as your not having a symptom.
10:50 And eventually what you want to get up is to do intervals.
10:54 You know, you're gonna go six minutes at one speed.
10:56 Six minutes at a greater speed.
10:57 You want to go faster and rest
10:59 because that's what how the God designed it,
11:01 to work in intervals.
11:02 You know, in the Garden of Eden,
11:03 you know, Adam might have to chase down that tiger there
11:06 but then after he chase it down he would rest.
11:08 So you go fast, slow fast slow.
11:10 That's what gets your arteries bigger,
11:12 smaller, bigger, smaller that's what exercises them more.
11:15 So it's this intervals training
11:16 and they arbitrarily use about six minutes.
11:19 So I get on the treadmill,
11:20 and I go six minutes of speed elevated some more six minutes.
11:23 When I start to getting tired
11:24 I don't want to go into anaerobic metabolism.
11:26 Right. Or hurt my body.
11:28 Or of course if I'm having a symptom of a pain
11:30 somewhere I want to bring it down right away.
11:33 So yes, you can exercise too much
11:35 and we want to try to get people
11:36 everyone doing some exercise but interval exercise.
11:40 That's actually very good news Dr. Marcum,
11:42 because there are things that we can do
11:44 in the natural world in the natural way.
11:48 And as we get back to this natural way of doing things
11:52 we find that God has prepared the way for us.
11:55 There are natural laws that we follow
11:58 and the closer we follow those natural laws
12:01 the more we dedicate ourselves to doing things
12:03 God's way the healthier we'll become.
12:06 And the less we need of everything else.
12:07 And a less we need everything else. Right.
12:08 That is such good news, good news.
12:11 Well we're going to take a short break.

12:46 naturally as God's way.
12:49 One of the questions I frequently get asked is
12:52 can I come off medications.
12:54 I'm taking medications from my heart.
12:57 And yes, it is possible for some people
12:59 to come off medications with a doctor's advice
13:01 especially if they can change there ways
13:04 and change your chemistries in other ways
13:06 like nitrous oxide that we talked about today
13:09 or get on the exercise program.
13:11 So it is possible to come off your medications
13:13 but I also want people to realize
13:15 if you're having a symptom
13:17 or you can't change to back to God's way
13:19 sometimes you need to stay on your medication.
13:23 And this is something that God wants to help you with.
13:25 So the main take home point today is remember,
13:28 that natural is God's way.
13:31 And where there is lots of things
13:33 we can do to change our body's chemistry
13:35 to help not only your heart but your entire vascular system
13:38 which is called the endothelial.
13:41 It might be someone out there today
13:43 that needs a prayer and needs a little a extra help
13:45 that may be is a boost to long likes way
13:48 to get back to God's natural plans.
