Welcome to the program. 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.09 I'm Charles Mills here with Dr. James Marcum 00:00:02.12\00:00:04.42 and we are talking about depression today. 00:00:04.45\00:00:06.90 It is a topic that a lot of people 00:00:06.93\00:00:08.69 don't really want to talk about. 00:00:08.72\00:00:10.05 They say I am not depressed, I am just tired. 00:00:10.08\00:00:12.26 Or I am just feeling a little bit down. 00:00:12.29\00:00:14.74 And that may be the case 00:00:14.77\00:00:15.98 but if it--think if it goes on for days 00:00:16.01\00:00:18.60 and weeks and even years, 00:00:18.63\00:00:20.92 then you might want to reconsider what the problem is. 00:00:20.95\00:00:23.83 And Dr. Marcum you outlined some things 00:00:23.86\00:00:25.73 that we can do lifestyle wise to getting the more sunlight, 00:00:25.76\00:00:30.28 the better water intake, eating a better diet 00:00:30.31\00:00:33.12 and all of these things and exercising, absolutely. 00:00:33.15\00:00:36.37 What are some other areas that we need to look at 00:00:36.40\00:00:39.89 that few people consider? 00:00:39.92\00:00:42.50 And I am thinking immediately relationship with God. 00:00:42.53\00:00:46.07 Kind it be that if we do not have a relationship 00:00:46.10\00:00:48.90 with someone bigger than we, more powerful than we are, 00:00:48.93\00:00:52.20 someone who can actually save our lives 00:00:52.23\00:00:54.03 and save our souls. 00:00:54.06\00:00:56.34 Can they bring about a feeling of depression in the mind? 00:00:56.37\00:00:59.28 Well, I think they can 00:00:59.31\00:01:00.34 especially if you worship something 00:01:00.37\00:01:02.56 that causes guilt or fear, anxiety 00:01:02.59\00:01:05.31 that would turn on the stress part of the brain 00:01:05.34\00:01:07.72 which would make all these inflammatory cytokines 00:01:07.75\00:01:10.31 which could make a predisposed brain 00:01:10.34\00:01:12.78 more likely to have depression. 00:01:12.81\00:01:14.49 So worshipping a God that we are fearful of, 00:01:14.52\00:01:17.55 worshipping a God that we think says to us I love you, 00:01:17.58\00:01:22.58 I created you, I died for you 00:01:22.61\00:01:25.66 but if you don't love me in return I will kill you 00:01:25.69\00:01:28.33 and a lot of people say, that--that can't be. 00:01:28.36\00:01:30.49 But if you stop and think about it 00:01:30.52\00:01:31.79 a lot of people believe that about God. 00:01:31.82\00:01:33.94 This vengeful, wrath filled God 00:01:33.97\00:01:38.19 who was waiting to just do a number on us 00:01:38.22\00:01:40.07 because we are not obeying Him. 00:01:40.10\00:01:42.04 That can bring about depression because we need to have a God 00:01:42.07\00:01:46.78 where we can worship that actually increases the joy 00:01:46.81\00:01:50.26 and the love and the--the benefits of love 00:01:50.29\00:01:55.94 that that kind of God would not bring. 00:01:55.97\00:01:57.74 Yeah and that's a trauma to the brain. 00:01:57.77\00:01:59.63 Absolutely. It doesn't make sense. 00:01:59.66\00:02:01.99 I have pointed it we have a good understanding of God. 00:02:02.02\00:02:04.68 Yeah, the brain--in back in the Garden of Eden, 00:02:04.71\00:02:06.57 the brain was made to worship God, 00:02:06.60\00:02:08.59 the true God and as we had false God 00:02:08.62\00:02:11.20 this just going do damages. 00:02:11.23\00:02:12.93 Now we can even apply this when people are young, 00:02:12.96\00:02:15.82 when you are growing up, 00:02:15.85\00:02:17.28 if you are in abusive relationships, 00:02:17.31\00:02:19.72 unloving situations, if you are beaten, 00:02:19.75\00:02:23.32 that puts damage on your brain too another type of trauma. 00:02:23.35\00:02:26.84 We see people that are overseas 00:02:26.87\00:02:29.79 and they have all these trauma that happens when people, 00:02:29.82\00:02:32.80 you know, kill each other and it was that type of damage, 00:02:32.83\00:02:35.93 it damages in your circuits. 00:02:35.96\00:02:38.03 Our brain wasn't designed to do these things. 00:02:38.06\00:02:40.72 Now do some people have depression 00:02:40.75\00:02:43.24 and do everything right? 00:02:43.27\00:02:44.60 Absolutely, there are certain genetic conditions 00:02:44.63\00:02:47.62 that predisposed to depression 00:02:47.65\00:02:50.38 and in those situations 00:02:50.41\00:02:51.84 sometimes we need to use medications, 00:02:51.87\00:02:54.07 sometime we use to use 00:02:54.10\00:02:55.29 other types of treatment for depression 00:02:55.32\00:02:57.19 like cognitive therapy. 00:02:57.22\00:02:58.95 We are gonna talk about a little bit 00:02:58.98\00:03:00.41 about special magnetic pulses, 00:03:00.44\00:03:02.72 magnetic stimulation that we can do 00:03:02.75\00:03:04.93 in addition to the lifestyle but one other things 00:03:04.96\00:03:07.54 I think you touched on is I have never seen 00:03:07.57\00:03:10.15 worship hurt someone that was depressed. 00:03:10.18\00:03:13.12 I never seen anyone that they praises God, 00:03:13.15\00:03:16.30 where they praised Him that makes the depression worse. 00:03:16.33\00:03:19.06 If they know who they are praying to. Exactly. 00:03:19.09\00:03:22.12 And what to expect from the God they are praying to. 00:03:22.15\00:03:24.34 That is the difference. 00:03:24.37\00:03:25.45 If they have expectations of a God 00:03:25.48\00:03:28.74 and that--those expectations are not met by the God 00:03:28.77\00:03:31.06 that they think is up there they are going to be depressed 00:03:31.09\00:03:33.29 because they think well, God is not listening to me. 00:03:33.32\00:03:34.91 He doesn't care about me. Right. 00:03:34.94\00:03:36.29 So it's so important that we have a good understanding 00:03:36.32\00:03:39.08 of who we are praying to 00:03:39.11\00:03:40.35 and the kind of God that's up there. 00:03:40.38\00:03:41.41 And chemically what it does 00:03:41.44\00:03:42.68 is it makes chemical called endorphins. 00:03:42.71\00:03:44.91 When you have this happen 00:03:44.94\00:03:46.26 it makes chemical called dopamine 00:03:46.29\00:03:48.45 which helps us with other problems 00:03:48.48\00:03:50.56 and makes us feel good. 00:03:50.59\00:03:52.19 It helps us give us the power to may be exercise, 00:03:52.22\00:03:54.95 to breathe better, to eat better, 00:03:54.98\00:03:56.78 to make the nutritional changes we knew 00:03:56.81\00:03:58.59 because we do know that nutrition effects 00:03:58.62\00:04:00.61 our brain health, it effects depression too. 00:04:00.64\00:04:03.18 But one thing I want everyone to think about today is 00:04:03.21\00:04:05.99 when you go to the doctor and have the symptoms 00:04:06.02\00:04:08.74 and he says I think you are depressed, 00:04:08.77\00:04:11.84 I would ask before anything else is there anything else 00:04:11.87\00:04:15.09 I can do before you write me that prescription 00:04:15.12\00:04:17.67 because those prescriptions that you might really need it 00:04:17.70\00:04:20.09 and some people at their suicide 00:04:20.12\00:04:21.45 need it for short period of time. 00:04:21.48\00:04:23.48 But in addition was there things that I can do is a trauma 00:04:23.51\00:04:26.63 that's been done, can my brain be reward 00:04:26.66\00:04:29.13 with cognitive therapy or worship therapy, 00:04:29.16\00:04:31.46 that's how we say. 00:04:31.49\00:04:32.75 Is there something nutritional that we can do? 00:04:32.78\00:04:34.42 Worship therapy, I like that. 00:04:34.45\00:04:35.85 Worship therapy is a-- healthy worship therapy. 00:04:35.88\00:04:38.48 Oh, yes, healthy worship therapy. 00:04:38.51\00:04:39.54 Is there some other therapy that we can add 00:04:39.57\00:04:41.63 that may be can change our chemistry naturally 00:04:41.66\00:04:44.09 so we don't have to take the risk of the medicine 00:04:44.12\00:04:46.46 or do we have to always be in it. 00:04:46.49\00:04:47.96 Some people do need medication 00:04:47.99\00:04:49.77 and some people it's very useful for. 00:04:49.80\00:04:51.75 But I think everyone deserves 00:04:51.78\00:04:53.52 to get at the bottom of the cause 00:04:53.55\00:04:55.36 and I think in this world 00:04:55.39\00:04:57.43 we just don't talk to each other, 00:04:57.46\00:04:59.20 we don't care about each other, 00:04:59.23\00:05:00.79 we don't look for-- look beyond the surface 00:05:00.82\00:05:03.68 and I think and people that are out there 00:05:03.71\00:05:05.31 if you might have depression or think 00:05:05.34\00:05:06.72 you might have you need someone that really cares about you 00:05:06.75\00:05:10.10 that will look beyond the service that will make sure 00:05:10.13\00:05:12.12 you don't have a underlying medical problem, 00:05:12.15\00:05:14.32 they will make sure you don't have nutritional defects, 00:05:14.35\00:05:16.84 they will make sure you are exercising. 00:05:16.87\00:05:18.43 And here's another one, Charles, rest. 00:05:18.46\00:05:20.58 Did you know that that is a major treatment 00:05:20.61\00:05:22.90 for depression because when you are resting guess what, 00:05:22.93\00:05:26.48 your stress chemistry goes down, your inflammation goes down, 00:05:26.51\00:05:30.17 your brain starts to think better, 00:05:30.20\00:05:31.74 it can function better. 00:05:31.77\00:05:33.02 So just that the pure process of rest 00:05:33.05\00:05:35.07 and again that's another biblical treatment. 00:05:35.10\00:05:37.60 You know, you work six days, you rest a day. 00:05:37.63\00:05:40.36 We were originally designed to rest at night. 00:05:40.39\00:05:42.77 As we violate these laws that God has given us 00:05:42.80\00:05:46.65 there is a chemical consequence. 00:05:46.68\00:05:48.84 You know, there might be a chemical consequence 00:05:48.87\00:05:50.59 to your knee if you never rest your knee. 00:05:50.62\00:05:52.45 Well it's only in intuitive that if we don't rest our brain 00:05:52.48\00:05:56.28 there is going to be some chemical changes to that. 00:05:56.31\00:05:58.07 We just wear the brain out, and the brain wears out 00:05:58.10\00:06:00.51 and all these neurocircuitry that we've talked about 00:06:00.54\00:06:03.14 it changes for the bad. 00:06:03.17\00:06:04.37 We make the bad chemicals 00:06:04.40\00:06:05.54 and not enough the good chemicals. 00:06:05.57\00:06:07.12 So I can--I don't know if anyone that gets worst 00:06:07.15\00:06:09.62 when they had a goodnights rest either. 00:06:09.65\00:06:11.64 Yes, absolutely. 00:06:11.67\00:06:13.01 We need also realize that the way 00:06:13.04\00:06:16.07 God response to our prayer when we have figured out 00:06:16.10\00:06:20.14 that God is a loving God 00:06:20.17\00:06:21.50 and He has our best interest in heart 00:06:21.53\00:06:23.28 and He is not out to destroy us. 00:06:23.31\00:06:25.79 How God responses, we need to make sure 00:06:25.82\00:06:28.06 that we realize that it may be in a book, 00:06:28.09\00:06:31.13 it may be through the words of a friend, 00:06:31.16\00:06:33.14 it may be in a sermon, it may be in a song. 00:06:33.17\00:06:35.43 If we go into a church service, 00:06:35.46\00:06:37.46 if we go into a relationship with someone 00:06:37.49\00:06:40.14 with the thought I am gonna be listening for God to talk to me. 00:06:40.17\00:06:44.30 I am gonna be listening for God 00:06:44.33\00:06:45.70 to give me some kind of information here, 00:06:45.73\00:06:47.54 in this relationship, in this book what I am reading, 00:06:47.57\00:06:49.81 in this television program that I am watching 00:06:49.84\00:06:51.72 which gives you an idea that we need to be watching 00:06:51.75\00:06:53.98 some really good television programs 00:06:54.01\00:06:55.20 like here on 3ABN. 00:06:55.23\00:06:56.86 If I am in a receptive mode to God's response to my prayer 00:06:56.89\00:07:04.28 it's amazing how God response. 00:07:04.31\00:07:07.61 It is--it is incredible the ways God use to do. 00:07:07.64\00:07:11.49 Some people pray and they will wait for the answer. 00:07:11.52\00:07:12.91 They sit back and wait when is it coming, 00:07:12.94\00:07:14.26 when is it coming. 00:07:14.29\00:07:15.32 They listen to the still small voice 00:07:15.35\00:07:16.38 that God really want to use the voice of a friend, 00:07:16.41\00:07:18.56 the voice of the preacher of church, 00:07:18.59\00:07:19.97 the voice of someone on television, in a book. 00:07:20.00\00:07:22.81 We need to be open to that. Yeah. 00:07:22.84\00:07:24.08 So when we pray God here is my problem, please help me. 00:07:24.11\00:07:27.66 Then we start looking around for the answer 00:07:27.69\00:07:29.98 and not wait for it to come to us we start going to it. 00:07:30.01\00:07:32.79 What do you think? 00:07:32.82\00:07:33.85 That's great, Charles, 00:07:33.88\00:07:34.91 and you know like we talk about relationship 00:07:34.94\00:07:37.23 and my relationship with you 00:07:37.26\00:07:38.48 is different than I might have with anyone else 00:07:38.51\00:07:40.33 but God works through relationship with you. 00:07:40.36\00:07:43.51 And it's just--you know, that's why I am hoping 00:07:43.54\00:07:45.15 some people that will be watching today 00:07:45.18\00:07:46.82 will learn something more about this subject of depression 00:07:46.85\00:07:49.67 even though I am not a psychiatrist, 00:07:49.70\00:07:51.52 you are not a psychiatrists. 00:07:51.55\00:07:52.99 We are not psychologists but we want people 00:07:53.02\00:07:54.67 to think about this important subject 00:07:54.70\00:07:56.59 because so many people do have down science, 00:07:56.62\00:07:59.45 you know, depression 00:07:59.48\00:08:00.51 and unfortunately lots of people are on medicines. 00:08:00.54\00:08:02.41 Were might be something like, 00:08:02.44\00:08:03.55 did you know that people that have the symptoms of depression 00:08:03.58\00:08:06.56 and seven of ten people there might be something 00:08:06.59\00:08:09.28 as simple as they are missing the genetic thing 00:08:09.31\00:08:11.36 to make folic acid. 00:08:11.39\00:08:13.11 You know something like that. 00:08:13.14\00:08:14.17 Like L-Methylfolate or some healthy foods 00:08:14.20\00:08:16.57 with those things that can help the brain function. 00:08:16.60\00:08:19.26 It might be something as increasing the ceriatone 00:08:19.29\00:08:21.37 or going outdoors, it might be cognitive, 00:08:21.40\00:08:24.08 it might be just having a friend, 00:08:24.11\00:08:26.00 it might be because you are lonely, 00:08:26.03\00:08:27.43 it might because you had trauma in your life, 00:08:27.46\00:08:29.49 it might because you are not sleeping 00:08:29.52\00:08:31.07 but it's usually what I found out, Charles, 00:08:31.10\00:08:32.81 it's usually just not one thing. 00:08:32.84\00:08:34.32 It's usually a little bit of this, 00:08:34.35\00:08:35.73 a little bit of that, a little bit of that, 00:08:35.76\00:08:37.84 and before you know you have crossed the line. 00:08:37.87\00:08:40.51 And then if you can sort of lower each one of these 00:08:40.54\00:08:43.17 and the person can start feeling better. 00:08:43.20\00:08:45.04 Well let's go to some questions 00:08:45.07\00:08:46.27 here on the heartwiseministries.org website. 00:08:46.30\00:08:49.34 You've answered some of them already 00:08:49.37\00:08:50.72 and it says is here, is there any way 00:08:50.75\00:08:51.95 to come off medications for depression? 00:08:51.98\00:08:56.16 If you want to come off medication for depression 00:08:56.19\00:08:58.55 you just drop the medication and hope for the best? 00:08:58.58\00:09:01.91 How do you come of medication for depression? 00:09:01.94\00:09:03.49 Now just think about this for a second, okay. 00:09:03.52\00:09:06.55 Do drug companies ever want you 00:09:06.58\00:09:08.14 to come of from medication? Absolutely not. 00:09:08.17\00:09:09.58 Not when there are so many people taking them. 00:09:09.61\00:09:11.63 And sometimes these medications prompt a side effect 00:09:11.66\00:09:14.52 where you need anther medication. 00:09:14.55\00:09:16.67 The doctor it takes times to get you off medication 00:09:16.70\00:09:19.34 or some of them don't want you off medication either. 00:09:19.37\00:09:21.80 The only one that really wants you off 00:09:21.83\00:09:22.99 from medication is probably you. 00:09:23.02\00:09:25.28 So it does have to come with doctor's supervision. 00:09:25.31\00:09:29.60 If you are having suicidal thoughts 00:09:29.63\00:09:31.36 or helplessness it might not be the best thing 00:09:31.39\00:09:33.61 unless you got them. 00:09:33.64\00:09:34.67 But you know in milder cases of depression 00:09:34.70\00:09:37.09 it is possible be off 00:09:37.12\00:09:38.57 especially if you make these other changes. 00:09:38.60\00:09:40.94 We know that people that--that exercise 00:09:40.97\00:09:43.78 and get out in the sun 00:09:43.81\00:09:44.90 that's just as effective for the treating 00:09:44.93\00:09:46.85 this depression as a medication. 00:09:46.88\00:09:48.59 So why not, so let me, 00:09:48.62\00:09:49.88 you know, gradually triturate this medicine down 00:09:49.91\00:09:52.27 and substitute these types of things, 00:09:52.30\00:09:54.05 may be L-Methylfolate, may be some, you know, 00:09:54.08\00:09:57.30 some almonds and walnuts that have omega three fatty acids. 00:09:57.33\00:10:00.58 May be some exercise, rest and water, 00:10:00.61\00:10:02.85 may be a little more worship and see how you feel 00:10:02.88\00:10:05.78 and may be you feel so good 00:10:05.81\00:10:07.47 that you don't need that depression medicine anymore. 00:10:07.50\00:10:09.86 Then guess what? 00:10:09.89\00:10:10.98 You can come off of it. 00:10:11.01\00:10:12.14 Unfortunately some of these depression medicines 00:10:12.17\00:10:14.10 have bad side effects. 00:10:14.13\00:10:15.80 Some of the when mixed with other medications 00:10:15.83\00:10:18.35 change the rhythms of the heart 00:10:18.38\00:10:20.24 and it can make dangerous rhythms 00:10:20.27\00:10:21.81 we call that the QTC interval. 00:10:21.84\00:10:23.81 Sometimes that can cause dangerous rhythms, 00:10:23.84\00:10:26.15 sometimes it can create greater mood disorders. 00:10:26.18\00:10:29.35 Some of these psychiatric medicines 00:10:29.38\00:10:31.92 for depression have also been 00:10:31.95\00:10:33.22 associated with increasing the rate of suicide. 00:10:33.25\00:10:36.27 So if you can be off of these with cognitive therapy 00:10:36.30\00:10:39.09 or any other therapy sometimes it's worth it. 00:10:39.12\00:10:41.77 Now one thing I wanted to talk about is 00:10:41.80\00:10:43.35 this new field that's coming cutting edge of medicine. 00:10:43.38\00:10:46.50 It's where they give magnetic pluses to the brain 00:10:46.53\00:10:50.29 and they can target different part of the brain. 00:10:50.32\00:10:52.37 And what this does is it causes the neurons to change 00:10:52.40\00:10:56.06 and release different chemicals in different connections 00:10:56.09\00:10:58.50 and sometimes that can help people 00:10:58.53\00:11:00.13 that have depression as well. 00:11:00.16\00:11:02.24 So there is lots of different ways we can help 00:11:02.27\00:11:04.43 and in my opinion that might even be safer than a pill 00:11:04.46\00:11:07.69 because other than the pocket book 00:11:07.72\00:11:09.05 it doesn't have a lot of long term side effects. 00:11:09.08\00:11:12.25 But every out there as far as depression goes 00:11:12.28\00:11:14.46 I want you to think about it look for answers 00:11:14.49\00:11:16.83 don't just accept a pill and talk about it. 00:11:16.86\00:11:19.69 Look at these other modes that we have out there 00:11:19.72\00:11:21.90 including nutrition, lifestyle, 00:11:21.93\00:11:23.55 especially look at worship, 00:11:23.58\00:11:25.80 talk to your doctor 00:11:25.83\00:11:26.86 see if it is possible you can be off medicines. 00:11:26.89\00:11:29.04 Make sure your medicines aren't interactive dangerously 00:11:29.07\00:11:32.10 and if a medication is making you feel worse, 00:11:32.13\00:11:34.71 you know, sometimes the medicine makes you feel worse. 00:11:34.74\00:11:36.39 Raise your hand and get off of that. 00:11:36.42\00:11:38.31 Yeah, absolutely. 00:11:38.34\00:11:39.74 I think its so important that we realize 00:11:39.77\00:11:41.97 that depression is serious. 00:11:42.00\00:11:44.04 It is not something that we just have to tolerate 00:11:44.07\00:11:48.34 and may be it will go away because it may not. 00:11:48.37\00:11:51.03 I think that we need to begin as a people 00:11:51.06\00:11:54.71 and especially people of God to start use using the tools 00:11:54.74\00:11:58.92 that God has put there for us. 00:11:58.95\00:12:00.81 Try that the change in the diet 00:12:00.84\00:12:03.57 and the fresh air and the sunshine 00:12:03.60\00:12:05.87 and the rest try to cover the place 00:12:05.90\00:12:09.41 where you realize that these problems that you are facing 00:12:09.44\00:12:13.56 are the result of sin, that many of them are normal 00:12:13.59\00:12:17.41 because who wants to live in a sinful world 00:12:17.44\00:12:18.93 and see the awful things that take place. 00:12:18.96\00:12:21.30 But we have to realize that we do have a God that loves us. 00:12:21.33\00:12:23.70 A God that wants to save us 00:12:23.73\00:12:25.38 and God who is preparing a place for us in heaven 00:12:25.41\00:12:29.25 after we get through of this very depressing world. 00:12:29.28\00:12:32.90 When we come back, we will talk to that God we didn't hear much about depression. 00:12:55.14\00:12:57.76 You know, we didn't treat everyone with medication. 00:12:57.79\00:13:00.55 Somehow we worked it out a little bit better. 00:13:00.58\00:13:03.02 And there's got to be better ways 00:13:03.05\00:13:04.54 to treat depression than pills. 00:13:04.57\00:13:06.38 However, some people really need the pills to stay well. 00:13:06.41\00:13:10.04 And if you are suffering with depression 00:13:10.07\00:13:11.59 I want you to consider some of the things 00:13:11.62\00:13:13.28 we talked about today. 00:13:13.31\00:13:14.42 The lifestyle changes like, eating a healthy diet, 00:13:14.45\00:13:17.24 exercise, getting enough rest, eating a plant based diet, 00:13:17.27\00:13:21.24 try to stay away from the stats 00:13:21.27\00:13:22.84 which can contribute inflammation. 00:13:22.87\00:13:25.34 Look at the things in your life 00:13:25.37\00:13:26.74 that might be causing inflammation 00:13:26.77\00:13:28.85 which could also hurt your brain. 00:13:28.88\00:13:31.39 Look at your life and see if there is trauma 00:13:31.42\00:13:33.74 but more important than that I want to also encourage you 00:13:33.77\00:13:36.24 to come back to worship. 00:13:36.27\00:13:38.15 Worship and change your brain. 00:13:38.18\00:13:39.62 Talk to God about this, 00:13:39.65\00:13:41.01 let Him
