00:00:16.52\00:00:18.52 If you don't know and you don't care 00:00:18.55\00:00:21.46 you might want to stay tune. 00:00:21.49\00:00:23.07 Depression is a serious health issue. 00:00:23.10\00:00:26.97 I'm Doctor James Marcum. 00:00:28.31\00:00:30.38 Are you interested in discovering the reason why? 00:00:30.41\00:00:33.79 You want solutions to your health care problem. 00:00:33.82\00:00:36.54 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:00:36.57\00:00:39.45 Well, you're about to given the ultimate prescription. 00:00:39.48\00:00:45.53 We've all been there feeling down sad morrows. 00:00:45.56\00:00:50.13 That's normal in a sinful world. 00:00:50.16\00:00:52.83 There is a lot here to put us into that frame of mind. 00:00:52.86\00:00:55.09 However if your feelings of sadness 00:00:55.12\00:00:57.26 and hopelessness remain for days, 00:00:57.29\00:00:59.11 weeks and even years 00:00:59.14\00:01:00.92 then you maybe experiencing full-blown depression 00:01:00.95\00:01:03.85 which if left untreated can do major damage to you 00:01:03.88\00:01:08.17 and the people you care for. 00:01:08.20\00:01:10.44 Depression isn't fun and services no real purpose 00:01:10.47\00:01:13.27 but the good news is it's treatable. 00:01:13.30\00:01:16.49 Dr. Marcum, I've heard that heart patients 00:01:16.52\00:01:19.04 especially after an open heart surgery 00:01:19.07\00:01:21.43 experience depression, why is that? 00:01:21.46\00:01:23.94 Yeah, unfortunately it's a major change in life 00:01:23.97\00:01:27.59 and any big stress in a life 00:01:27.62\00:01:29.34 especially the loss of the loved one, 00:01:29.37\00:01:31.56 the trauma that happens even when you're young 00:01:31.59\00:01:34.62 any types of big situations like that, 00:01:34.65\00:01:37.30 can create stress in the body. 00:01:37.33\00:01:39.50 And that stress can damage to neural circuitry of the brain 00:01:39.53\00:01:42.55 and cause this--this situation called depression. 00:01:42.58\00:01:46.09 Usually after the bypass surgery or stent or the heart attack, 00:01:46.12\00:01:49.71 if you think about what's going on 00:01:49.74\00:01:51.44 everyone sort of a face with their lives. 00:01:51.47\00:01:53.94 You know, they look at themselves 00:01:53.97\00:01:55.08 and say wow, this is me and then they realized 00:01:55.11\00:01:58.01 you know things that they want to do, 00:01:58.04\00:01:59.32 things at that they haven't done. 00:01:59.35\00:02:00.81 They sort of see their mortality of a sudden. 00:02:00.84\00:02:03.24 And this is such a life changing event 00:02:03.27\00:02:05.38 you know that their-- their depending on someone else 00:02:05.41\00:02:08.08 for the maybe for the first time in their lives. 00:02:08.11\00:02:09.88 You know, what is this doctor makes a mistake 00:02:09.91\00:02:11.95 or what if this happens? 00:02:11.98\00:02:13.67 And all those feelings come in their mind 00:02:13.70\00:02:15.95 and put stress on the system. 00:02:15.98\00:02:17.76 We talked previously about when the stress cascade 00:02:17.79\00:02:20.86 is turned on that amygdala 00:02:20.89\00:02:22.88 makes all these inflammatory mediators. 00:02:22.91\00:02:26.20 And a lot of people say that inflammatory mediators 00:02:26.23\00:02:29.16 that goes through out the body, 00:02:29.19\00:02:30.75 they can cause joint pains 00:02:30.78\00:02:32.47 but they also cause inflammation of the brain 00:02:32.50\00:02:35.04 which literally functions the way the brain works 00:02:35.07\00:02:37.22 the glial cells or neurotransmitters, 00:02:37.25\00:02:39.52 this inflammatory goes on the brain. 00:02:39.55\00:02:42.21 Now luckily for people pose bypass usually 00:02:42.24\00:02:44.88 with a reassurance and a little time, 00:02:44.91\00:02:47.46 an emotional support this coordinate of therapy 00:02:47.49\00:02:50.30 all the sudden showing them the kindness and love 00:02:50.33\00:02:52.83 and reassurance that the brains starts to get better. 00:02:52.86\00:02:55.58 It say's yeah, I'm not better. 00:02:55.61\00:02:57.24 So the good part of the brain overcomes to bad part 00:02:57.27\00:02:59.70 and it's says no, the logic tells me 00:02:59.73\00:03:01.78 that I'm gonna get better 00:03:01.81\00:03:02.92 I can take charge of circumstance, 00:03:02.95\00:03:04.97 I don't have to do that. 00:03:05.00\00:03:06.32 But, Charles, depression is--is a real big problem in America. 00:03:06.35\00:03:10.03 Now I'm not a psychiatrist, I'm not a psychologist. 00:03:10.06\00:03:13.48 You probably know as much as depressions that I do 00:03:13.51\00:03:16.05 but I think it's something today we have to talk about, 00:03:16.08\00:03:19.38 we have to recognize did it exist 00:03:19.41\00:03:21.97 and give our viewers some places to go 00:03:22.00\00:03:23.90 where they can find the answers to this problem. 00:03:23.93\00:03:26.32 You know, as I hear you talk about this-- 00:03:26.35\00:03:28.72 this open heart surgery 00:03:28.75\00:03:30.44 and now dependent on always other people. 00:03:30.47\00:03:33.63 It sounds like that loss of control 00:03:33.66\00:03:36.58 can bring about a depressive situation. 00:03:36.61\00:03:38.76 Exactly. Okay. 00:03:38.79\00:03:39.97 And any type of--you know, stress, you know, 00:03:40.00\00:03:42.58 from any type of ways can trigger this depression. 00:03:42.61\00:03:46.13 It triggers this inflammation which changes the way we think. 00:03:46.16\00:03:49.42 Now a lot of people don't even know, 00:03:49.45\00:03:51.63 if they are depressed. 00:03:51.66\00:03:52.95 Now, Charles, do you think I can check this in your blood 00:03:52.98\00:03:55.33 for depression either something 00:03:55.36\00:03:56.47 I can measure in your blood for depression? 00:03:56.50\00:03:57.92 I don't know, is there? No, there is not. 00:03:57.95\00:04:00.10 It's not like I can do a cat scan 00:04:00.13\00:04:02.53 and you know, or a pet scan on your brain. 00:04:02.56\00:04:04.56 Now I might see if your brain is active 00:04:04.59\00:04:06.32 or inactive with that might help me a little bit, 00:04:06.35\00:04:08.52 you know, if you're demanded or something. 00:04:08.55\00:04:10.22 But there is really no test that we can do on a person 00:04:10.25\00:04:13.68 to see if the depressed. 00:04:13.71\00:04:14.74 So just making the diagnosis can be a challenge 00:04:14.77\00:04:18.36 and not only, you know, once you think a person 00:04:18.39\00:04:20.90 is depressed you have to again ask why is that person? 00:04:20.93\00:04:24.50 Because that determines in my mind 00:04:24.53\00:04:27.03 what treatment they want. 00:04:27.06\00:04:28.33 So let's talk a little bit about the diagnosis of depression. 00:04:28.36\00:04:31.64 We all know that people might feel 00:04:31.67\00:04:33.79 you know sad that's one thing. 00:04:33.82\00:04:36.00 They might withdraw from things. 00:04:36.03\00:04:38.23 They--they lose the ability to you have pleasure. 00:04:38.26\00:04:41.45 They might not sleep at night. 00:04:41.48\00:04:43.93 They might not want to get up and work anymore. 00:04:43.96\00:04:47.36 They might lose their appetite. 00:04:47.39\00:04:49.69 They might have problems thinking 00:04:49.72\00:04:51.50 coordinative changes might occur. 00:04:51.53\00:04:53.72 All of these are symptoms of depression. 00:04:53.75\00:04:56.39 And when this goes on for a prolonged period of time 00:04:56.42\00:04:59.15 someone might say, 00:04:59.18\00:05:00.21 well, I think that person is depressed. 00:05:00.24\00:05:02.37 Prolonged exposure you're talking about. 00:05:02.40\00:05:03.69 Yeah, prolonged exposure 00:05:03.72\00:05:04.86 these chemicals that make a feel this way you might say, 00:05:04.89\00:05:07.11 these symptoms might make the diagnose of depression 00:05:07.14\00:05:10.57 but to me these symptoms are like a cough. 00:05:10.60\00:05:14.84 You know, a cough you want to know what cause is the cough. 00:05:14.87\00:05:17.79 Is it due to sinuses, is it sore throat, 00:05:17.82\00:05:20.42 is it, you know-- so once, 00:05:20.45\00:05:21.82 once these people having these brain feelings, 00:05:21.85\00:05:24.42 what's causing these feeling 00:05:24.45\00:05:25.63 it might be labeled as depression. 00:05:25.66\00:05:27.68 So to me depression is also is a symptom, 00:05:27.71\00:05:31.00 it's not a cause. 00:05:31.03\00:05:32.42 You see, what I'm saying? Interesting. 00:05:32.45\00:05:33.48 It's just symptoms-- anyone says 00:05:33.51\00:05:34.75 oh, I'm giving treatment for depression. 00:05:34.78\00:05:36.95 Well, just like being treated for a pain. Yes. 00:05:36.98\00:05:39.27 Well, what's that mean? Yes. 00:05:39.30\00:05:40.61 So unfortunately in the world we now live, 00:05:40.64\00:05:43.53 you know, you go to a doctor he spends five minutes with you 00:05:43.56\00:05:46.52 and you say, oh I'm feeling this way 00:05:46.55\00:05:48.15 and he says, man, I think you are depressed. 00:05:48.18\00:05:50.01 Out of here, here is a medicine for depression 00:05:50.04\00:05:53.08 it will change your chemistry. 00:05:53.11\00:05:54.37 They go give it to you and off you go. 00:05:54.40\00:05:56.82 Now did you know that that medicine will only be effective 00:05:56.85\00:06:00.37 for treatment of depression 28% of the time, 00:06:00.40\00:06:04.08 28% of time the first medicine. 00:06:04.11\00:06:05.95 Now that medicine doesn't work 00:06:05.98\00:06:07.74 and it gives you another medicine 00:06:07.77\00:06:09.30 it's only gonna be effected 22% of the time. 00:06:09.33\00:06:12.37 So each time they switch around 00:06:12.40\00:06:14.62 that the chance of that medicine being successful 00:06:14.65\00:06:16.97 and changing your chemistry goes down. 00:06:17.00\00:06:18.73 But the follow me, Charles, 00:06:18.76\00:06:20.67 even if we change the chemistry of the brain 00:06:20.70\00:06:23.52 we're not again getting at the cause 00:06:23.55\00:06:25.20 of the chemistry to begin with. 00:06:25.23\00:06:26.58 That's right, that's right. 00:06:26.61\00:06:27.64 You follow me here? Yeah. 00:06:27.67\00:06:28.70 So the way we're approaching depression 00:06:28.73\00:06:31.15 needs to be find out why the person is depressed 00:06:31.18\00:06:34.75 and come out of it from several different angles, 00:06:34.78\00:06:37.13 you know and there's lots of things 00:06:37.16\00:06:39.13 we can do to help with the depression. 00:06:39.16\00:06:40.37 For instance there's been some studies that done 00:06:40.40\00:06:42.60 so in a person that has depression 00:06:42.63\00:06:44.58 for no medical causes, you know medical things 00:06:44.61\00:06:46.91 can cause you to be depressed. 00:06:46.94\00:06:48.21 You know, for instance if everyday we came 00:06:48.24\00:06:51.15 and did that showed to me and every time I came 00:06:51.18\00:06:53.75 our director who is name Bill and Bill will look the other way 00:06:53.78\00:06:57.29 and while Bill wasn't looking I would beat you up 00:06:57.32\00:06:59.36 and you would fall down and then you get up 00:06:59.39\00:07:01.12 and that happened day in and day out, 00:07:01.15\00:07:02.83 you know, over and over 00:07:02.86\00:07:04.22 you will get depressed about that. Absolutely. 00:07:04.25\00:07:06.12 And the pill for depression won't help that. 00:07:06.15\00:07:08.76 Not one day. 00:07:08.79\00:07:09.82 Let's say you had cancer and we're not coping with that, 00:07:09.85\00:07:12.80 that won't help with that. 00:07:12.83\00:07:14.49 If you were guilt about something 00:07:14.52\00:07:16.06 you've done in your past. 00:07:16.09\00:07:17.37 A bill well wouldn't help with that. 00:07:17.40\00:07:18.83 Well, I tell you, you have struck upon 00:07:18.86\00:07:20.70 I think one of the major reason for depression that is guilt. 00:07:20.73\00:07:24.33 So many people are filled with guilt 00:07:24.36\00:07:27.09 and it can create a tremendous amount 00:07:27.12\00:07:29.97 of variety of casketing problems. 00:07:30.00\00:07:32.89 Guilt, guilt is a stress. Yes, it is guilt. 00:07:32.92\00:07:35.17 And if well if you have a thyroid abnormality 00:07:35.20\00:07:38.22 or nutritional abnormality, you know, all of those things 00:07:38.25\00:07:41.48 can create these symptoms of depression. 00:07:41.51\00:07:43.71 There are these nerve transmitters in the brain 00:07:43.74\00:07:46.11 and yet the real solution for that 00:07:46.14\00:07:47.89 is not necessarily a medication. 00:07:47.92\00:07:50.26 The real solution is find out the reason why 00:07:50.29\00:07:53.25 and that takes sometime. 00:07:53.28\00:07:54.87 It take some soul searching 00:07:54.90\00:07:56.54 and an unfortunately modern medicine 00:07:56.57\00:07:58.70 has taught us now, that patient doesn't need to find out 00:07:58.73\00:08:02.73 why it is just take a medicine. Yeah. 00:08:02.76\00:08:04.49 You know, and if that doesn't work 00:08:04.52\00:08:05.90 take another medicine. 00:08:05.93\00:08:06.96 But right now the mental health problems 00:08:06.99\00:08:08.76 are growing and growing and if you look at it, 00:08:08.79\00:08:12.01 if the more mental health problems 00:08:12.04\00:08:13.49 the more other problems we get into. 00:08:13.52\00:08:15.97 The more other health problems we go the cost, 00:08:16.00\00:08:18.16 the cost goes up. Yeah. 00:08:18.19\00:08:20.34 People lose days of work, they stay at home, 00:08:20.37\00:08:22.72 they aren't functional and they look for ways 00:08:22.75\00:08:24.89 to cope with depression 00:08:24.92\00:08:26.26 and usually they aren't healthy ways to cope with depression. 00:08:26.29\00:08:29.14 You know, sometimes people turn to alcohol, 00:08:29.17\00:08:31.47 sometimes they turn to drugs 00:08:31.50\00:08:33.35 and all because we haven't got the real problem to begin with. 00:08:33.38\00:08:37.70 Well, you know, what, as I listened to you 00:08:37.73\00:08:39.61 talk and realized that depression 00:08:39.64\00:08:43.25 really is a-- a mental problem. 00:08:43.28\00:08:46.23 It would seem to me that the answer 00:08:46.26\00:08:48.45 needs to be something that addresses the mental problem. 00:08:48.48\00:08:53.31 A change in diet maybe good. Yes, it's good. 00:08:53.34\00:08:55.39 And medicines maybe good and--and ideas maybe good. 00:08:55.42\00:08:59.45 But I think it's the cognitive of therapy 00:08:59.48\00:09:01.24 that we're missing here. Yes. 00:09:01.27\00:09:03.16 I read that cognitive therapy is even more effective 00:09:03.19\00:09:07.83 in treating depression than pills, 00:09:07.86\00:09:11.35 medicines and procedures. 00:09:11.38\00:09:13.43 Yes, and I agree with that. 00:09:13.46\00:09:15.82 I think that's a very important 00:09:15.85\00:09:16.89 because that teaches you 00:09:16.92\00:09:18.19 had a turn off the stress signals of the brain 00:09:18.22\00:09:20.59 get your thinking signals of the brain going. 00:09:20.62\00:09:23.15 So you can actually figure this out yourself. 00:09:23.18\00:09:25.25 You can feel out why am I depressed, 00:09:25.28\00:09:26.95 what do I need to do? 00:09:26.98\00:09:28.01 So first thing to do when we are depressed 00:09:28.04\00:09:29.26 and we're just feeling awful we really should not say well, 00:09:29.29\00:09:32.31 what medicine do I need. Not first. 00:09:32.34\00:09:34.10 Not first, okay we need to go, what do we need to do? 00:09:34.13\00:09:37.56 That's the first step is I would say, 00:09:37.59\00:09:40.60 you know, let's figured out 00:09:40.63\00:09:42.07 make sure they don't have an underline medical problem 00:09:42.10\00:09:44.27 like me beating you up. Yes. 00:09:44.30\00:09:46.45 Common things that are missed are thyroid. 00:09:46.48\00:09:48.48 That's a depressing thought. 00:09:48.51\00:09:49.74 Yeah, thyroid, nutritional, 00:09:49.77\00:09:51.60 cancer other things can cause our body to be this way. 00:09:51.63\00:09:55.22 Other things that can cause you to feel that way 00:09:55.25\00:09:57.32 is--is extra weight. 00:09:57.35\00:09:59.01 That can cause a person to be feel depress. 00:09:59.04\00:10:00.97 So these many things. 00:10:01.00\00:10:02.03 So look for that and make sure 00:10:02.06\00:10:03.25 you're not doing anything medically 00:10:03.28\00:10:04.97 that might cause it certain medications that we take 00:10:05.00\00:10:07.69 and sometimes alter that chemistry of a brain. 00:10:07.72\00:10:10.10 You've head of side effects, 00:10:10.13\00:10:11.68 or medicines cause some type of side effects. 00:10:11.71\00:10:14.17 It might be something as simple as a nutritional thing. 00:10:14.20\00:10:16.92 For instance, we know that 00:10:16.95\00:10:18.43 Eskimos have the highest suicide rate in the world. 00:10:18.46\00:10:21.91 Because they are in the dark all time. 00:10:21.94\00:10:24.05 When you're in the dark all the time 00:10:24.08\00:10:25.34 you don't make a chemical the vitamin D pathway serotonin. 00:10:25.37\00:10:28.49 Without serotonin the brain the prefrontal cortex 00:10:28.52\00:10:31.20 doesn't work as well. 00:10:31.23\00:10:32.77 When that happens their--you know their depression 00:10:32.80\00:10:35.18 goes up to something as simple as going outside 00:10:35.21\00:10:37.80 and it getting enough sunlight. 00:10:37.83\00:10:39.18 That might help lower the risk of depression. 00:10:39.21\00:10:41.25 Remember we were designed to be outside in a garden 00:10:41.28\00:10:44.14 taking care of animals all day. 00:10:44.17\00:10:45.78 Most of the stay inside 00:10:45.81\00:10:47.72 and we need 30 minutes of sunlight, 00:10:47.75\00:10:49.89 three times a week. 00:10:49.92\00:10:51.62 Our brain depends on water. 00:10:51.65\00:10:53.88 Sometimes it's not drinking of water 00:10:53.91\00:10:55.94 can be the tip over that messes up our brain chemistry. 00:10:55.97\00:10:59.38 We were also designed to exercise. 00:10:59.41\00:11:01.37 get good blood flow through water. 00:11:01.40\00:11:02.97 So get good blood flow through water 00:11:03.00\00:11:04.90 to our brain so that might work well. 00:11:04.93\00:11:07.55 And you know, when suddenly the 80 % of people 00:11:07.58\00:11:09.55 are depressed, 00:11:09.58\00:11:10.97 you know we know that their brain 00:11:11.00\00:11:12.27 is not getting enough water. 00:11:12.30\00:11:13.36 It can't optimally work chemically. 00:11:13.39\00:11:15.67 So if add up all these things, you know, you can see 00:11:15.70\00:11:18.52 that you can do really good with nutrition, 00:11:18.55\00:11:20.56 really good with lifestyle. 00:11:20.59\00:11:21.88 Maybe get some extra weight which causes inflammation. 00:11:21.91\00:11:25.15 Get some of these things done first. 00:11:25.18\00:11:27.22 Cognitive therapy first and then maybe 00:11:27.25\00:11:30.04 you are not gonna need to take a medicine. 00:11:30.07\00:11:31.87 But you know, later on we're gonna talk about 00:11:31.90\00:11:33.77 what I think is, is the key. 00:11:33.80\00:11:35.42 And we talked about this in previous programs 00:11:35.45\00:11:37.48 the key to depression is to change your whole mind. 00:11:37.51\00:11:40.86 The whole mind. 00:11:40.89\00:11:41.92 And this one-- one position that can do that 00:11:41.95\00:11:45.00 and I think we had to plug into the ultimate position 00:11:45.03\00:11:47.86 to run how to create a new mind. 00:11:47.89\00:11:50.02 And that's why I want to throw in is a treatment 00:11:50.05\00:11:51.85 for depression this word called, worship. 00:11:51.88\00:11:54.83 You know we talked on our previous show 00:11:54.86\00:11:57.28 about this idea that, that God wants to change our brain 00:11:57.31\00:12:02.55 and created us a new heart a new brain 00:12:02.58\00:12:04.92 and that when we are doing things 00:12:04.95\00:12:06.76 that are not good for us. 00:12:06.79\00:12:07.82 When we are thinking bad thoughts, 00:12:07.85\00:12:10.47 or we are not feeding it correctly 00:12:10.50\00:12:12.33 that one part of the brain where there is joy diminishes 00:12:12.36\00:12:15.51 and the part where there is fear 00:12:15.54\00:12:17.32 and uncertainty grows physically. Right. 00:12:17.35\00:12:20.96 So it's possible when we are feeling depressed 00:12:20.99\00:12:23.28 that we may be just not taking care 00:12:23.31\00:12:26.58 of the brain physically. 00:12:26.61\00:12:27.87 There may be an actual physical connection here 00:12:27.90\00:12:30.33 between what we are doing in our life 00:12:30.36\00:12:32.90 and the problems that our brain is brining back to us. 00:12:32.93\00:12:35.04 There is, those stress parts of the brain 00:12:35.07\00:12:36.78 makes inflammatory factors. 00:12:36.81\00:12:38.41 The cytokines and leukotrienes which can trigger 00:12:38.44\00:12:41.13 these actually nerve changes in our prefrontal cortex 00:12:41.16\00:12:43.98 that does our thinking and our feeling. 00:12:44.01\00:12:45.71 Well, depression is nothing to just put off aside. 00:12:45.74\00:12:49.79 It's very important and very serious. 00:12:49.82\00:12:51.80 When we come back we'll talk about some questions 00:12:51.83\00:12:54.21 that we have received at healthwiseministry.org 00:12:54.24\00:12:56.75 about the subject of the brain and depression. 00:12:56.78\00:12:59.76 And we'll do all that on our return, 00:12:59.79\00:13:01.10 so stay right where you are. 00:13:01.13\00:13:02.68
