00:01 The following program presents principles designed
00:03 to promote good health 00:04 and is not intended to take 00:05 the place of personalized professional care. 00:07 The opinions and ideas expressed are those of the speaker. 00:10 Viewers are encouraged to draw their own conclusions 00:13 about the information presented. 00:16 How is your brain? My brain you ask? 00:19 Yes, your brain is an organ just like your heart or liver, 00:23 certain health rules apply, stay tuned. 00:28 I am Dr. James Marcum. 00:30 Are you interested in discovering 00:32 the reason why you want solutions 00:35 to your healthcare problems? 00:36 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:39 Well, you're about to be given the Ultimate Prescription. 00:46 Most of us give little thought to our brains 00:48 which if you think about it 00:49 should be almost impossible to do, 00:52 yet brain health the persevering of that all important thinking, 00:55 remembering and learning centre of your body 00:58 is just as vulnerable as anything else about you. 01:01 You can damage it, starve it, poison it, alter it 01:04 and even kill it all with the few bad choices. 01:08 You can also repair it, feed it, detoxify it, 01:11 restore and save it 01:12 with little thinking itself with a few good choices. 01:16 If you are interested in keeping your brain healthy, 01:18 you have come to the right place. 01:20 Dr. Marcum what do we need know about our brain? 01:23 There is so much we can talk about 01:25 regarding the brain, Charles. 01:26 And if you think about it 01:28 everyone's become a lot more concerned about it 01:31 because of the increased dementias, 01:34 you know, we heard of Alzheimer's disease, 01:36 unfortunately people have a lot of toxins there 01:38 hurting their brain and some of the toxins 01:40 we think about now is alcohol 01:43 and drugs like amphetamines 01:45 and cocaine that hurts the brain. 01:46 Marijuana hurts the brain. 01:49 And there is many things that hurt the brain 01:51 and as you know from working with me 01:53 over the past period of time. 01:54 What I tried to do is I go back to biblical technology word 01:57 that I coined actually. 01:59 Where we look in the Bible and look for text 02:03 and then I go back and try to find the science 02:05 and then I try to apply it to the treatment of people. 02:08 Well this brain thing have been puzzling me 02:11 for a long period of time and you know I went back 02:13 and found the text about eating a healthy diet, being outside. 02:17 Well, one text kept coming up to me in the Psalms 02:20 and that was the Psalms the text that says, 02:22 "Create in me a new heart, O God." 02:26 What did that mean? 02:27 And if you remember the story this was the time where David, 02:31 David had did that terrible thing 02:33 and they think the prophet was coming to him 02:35 after that incident and he says listen, 02:38 you know, you know it was more than just a request, 02:41 I'm sure it was a cry from the bottom of his heart. 02:44 He know that he was ill, he might not have had diabetes 02:47 or heart disease 02:48 but he had something that's far worst, 02:50 he had a brain disease 02:52 and the brain disease was so bad 02:53 that he took someone else's life. 02:56 And this was a plea for help, so what did this mean 02:59 and how could this be applied to us today 03:01 to make our brains better. 03:03 Well you notice he used the word create, 03:06 so there is nothing he could do. 03:07 It was something that had to be done to him, 03:10 so I was very fascinated by that 03:12 and then what its mean a new heart? 03:13 Was this the physical heart. 03:15 Did David actually need the stent 03:17 or a bypass or some medicines? 03:19 Well, well no, so I went back to the Proverbs okay, 03:23 Solomon I think Solomon would have some line on this, 03:26 he was the smartest guy 03:28 and even Solomon remember the thing 03:30 that he said about the heart in Solomon, 03:32 as a man think it so he is. 03:34 So Solomon the wisest person in the world at that time 03:37 thought that the heart was the place 03:39 where thinking occurred. 03:41 So I said well, wow, 03:43 I didn't think the heart actually thought, 03:45 I thought the brain was doing the thinking. 03:48 Well, I looked back and at that time 03:50 around that time one of my favorite doctors 03:52 Dr. Hippocrates came along 03:54 and Dr. Hippocrates was great I really admired him, 03:56 he was far ahead on time on food. 03:58 He says let food be thy medicine 04:00 and medicine be thy food. He was great on that. 04:02 Another thing he said, first do no harm. 04:05 Wow, he is pretty smart guy. 04:06 What did he say about the heart? 04:08 Well, he thought the heart 04:10 was also the center of reasoning. 04:12 Now David lived about a thousand before Christ. 04:17 Hippocrates was more in the 360 before Christ 04:21 but later on there is another Alexandrian physician 04:25 that came along in Herophilos 04:28 and he originally did some dissection 04:30 and he did some dissection and found out 04:32 the heart wasn't the center of reasoning, 04:35 it was the brain that was at the center of reasoning. 04:38 So all of a sudden 04:39 things started to make a little more sense. 04:41 So David would say, create me a new brain. 04:44 So his brain wasn't right, his brain was diseased, 04:47 his brain was sick 04:48 and that caused him to do a terrible thing. 04:50 So the brain wasn't right, 04:52 so he was asking God 04:54 to create in me a new brain, not a new heart. 04:58 So may be we should start with illness in the brain 05:00 and not a new heart because he didn't say 05:02 create me a new heart, he said a new brain first. 05:05 Well Solomon says as a man thinks it, 05:08 so-- so you know, 05:09 so as the man think it in his brain so he is. 05:12 And in the Bible there is over 700 texts 05:15 referring to heart and most of them 05:18 also talk about referring to the brain. 05:20 So there is very something chemically healing 05:23 that comes from this new brain 05:25 and in most of those incenses it wasn't-- 05:28 that we did anything to have this new brain, 05:30 it was a gift. 05:31 It was something given to us from God. 05:34 But we had to ask for it 05:36 and then we had to do something else. 05:38 In Matthew 11:28 another text 05:41 just kept jumping out at me, 05:42 it says, come unto me 05:44 all ye that labor and are heavy laden 05:46 and I will give you rest. 05:48 Well, how does that fit into thinking. 05:50 Well, come into me means to worship, 05:53 have that relationship, 05:54 have that relationship if you are heavy laden, 05:57 if you are stressed out and I will give you this rest. 06:00 Well, recently Dr. Andrew Newberg 06:04 at the University of Pennsylvania 06:05 has done some outstanding research 06:07 that help me understand what was meaning in these text, 06:10 when it says create me a new heart, a new brain. 06:13 He found out that there is a part of the brain 06:16 called the anterior cingulated, okay. 06:18 You know, the brain-- 06:19 part behind the brain is called the prefrontal cortex, 06:22 that's what does the thinking, 06:23 the reasoning, figuring things out. 06:26 The stress part of the brain is called the medulla 06:28 that's the one it makes adrenaline 06:30 and cortisol and inflammation. 06:32 Remember that word inflammation. 06:34 Inflammation in the body is bad. 06:36 Well, this part of the brain 06:37 makes all these inflammatory markers. 06:39 The prefrontal cortex 06:40 does the higher learning, the thinking. 06:42 And the anterior cortex sort of coordinates the two, 06:46 the anterior cingulate. 06:48 Well and he did a study where he had people worship, 06:52 they worshipped for 12 minutes for two months. 06:56 He found out after they worshiped for 12 minutes. 06:59 Is it 12 minutes per day? 07:00 12 minutes per day for two months 07:02 the anterior cingulate got bigger. 07:04 It grew inside and he measure these by PET scans, 07:08 positron emission tomography. 07:10 So he could see the metabolic activity, 07:12 he could see the cells getting bigger. 07:14 He also saw the cells 07:15 in the prefrontal cortex getting bigger. 07:17 So this-- when they worshipped 07:19 they had all these neurotrophic factors. 07:21 You grew new connections, new brain growth, 07:25 the brain is a remarkable organ just to begin with. 07:27 It was a physical change? 07:28 Yes, physical change, 07:29 not only that, there is more to it. 07:31 But there are billions of cells in the brain, 07:34 there are trillions of supporting connections, 07:36 there is a quadrillion inner connections going on. 07:38 Quadrillion is a lot, Charles. 07:40 But when you worship, that part of the brain, 07:42 the anterior cingulate got bigger, 07:43 grew new brain parts 07:45 and it turned off the stress part of the brain. 07:48 Okay, it turned off the medulla so it made that part smaller. 07:53 Now that's the part that makes adrenaline and cortisol 07:56 and all these inflammatory marker, 07:57 that got smaller. 07:59 So by worshiping 12 minutes a day, 08:01 he turned on the good part of the brain, 08:02 so we could reason more, 08:04 we could change our behavior, we could think better. 08:07 The anterior cingulate growing, 08:08 this is the part that teaches us empathy, 08:11 to teach us to love, to teach us to love our enemies, 08:14 to teach us to do something 08:16 that our primitive brain won't let us do. 08:18 So we can change behaviors for the right reasons. 08:22 Now if you think about that primitive brain, 08:24 you know, animal behavior is based on three things, 08:27 that they call the motivational triad Charles. 08:30 Animals want to seek pleasure 08:32 and they do that by reproducing and getting food. 08:35 They also do that by-- 08:37 another thing that they is they avoid pain 08:40 and the third thing is they want to conserve energy. 08:42 When we have that similar with lower animals, 08:44 butterflies, insects, frogs, reptiles that's what they do. 08:49 And that's where the old brain that we all share in common. 08:52 Now what us and only a few primates have 08:54 is this part of the brain called the anterior cingulated, 08:56 that can grow a new brain. 08:59 So in this study by Andrew Newberg, 09:01 he found out that when we worshiped a God of love. 09:04 Now he found out that if we worship a God 09:06 that had anger or guilt or resentment. 09:09 He studied the brain, the PET scans and guess what? 09:11 That part of the brain did not grow. 09:13 The stress part of the brain 09:14 that old brain got big and strong, 09:17 made all these chemicals 09:18 that cause damage if not treated. 09:22 So we talked a lot about stress on the system 09:24 while the stress was coming from the brains not-- 09:27 worshiping the way God want us to. 09:29 If we don't worship a God of love, 09:31 we can actually damage our brain 09:32 and if you think back to the Garden of Eden, Charles, 09:35 just think about it, 09:36 our brains were made to worship God. Absolutely. 09:40 And when we worship anything else, anything else 09:43 whether it be football or ourselves 09:46 or what our things, our car 09:49 whatever else we worship modern medicine, 09:51 lifestyle, nutrition, when we worship anything else, 09:54 our brains weren't made for that, 09:55 that's not true worship. 09:56 Our anterior cingulate will get smaller, 09:59 the stress chemistry will turn on, disease will develop. 10:02 So when you think about this, 10:04 when David was saying create me a new heart, 10:07 he had to asked for it, 10:08 so when you get this text in Matthew come into me, 10:11 worship me, be with me, have a relationship with me, 10:15 all you that are heavy laden, 10:16 all that stress part of the brain that's turned on 10:19 and I will give you this rest, 10:20 these real chemical changes, new dendrites, 10:23 new axons, new connections. 10:25 It decreases the bad chemistry, 10:27 adrenaline levels go down, 10:28 inflammation goes down, 10:29 and likewise the good chemicals, 10:31 Dr. Newberg found went up, the endorphins, 10:33 those levels started to climb, the dopamine started to climb. 10:37 Now this was just worship the way he defined it. 10:40 Can you imagine the studies in worship in people 10:42 that were worshipped even more 10:45 or worshipped even the right way. 10:47 Can you image us doing the study with 100 people 10:49 that worshipped this ways, we'll do a PET scan, 10:51 a 100 worshiped this way, we PET scans it, 10:54 listen you are not worshiping correct, 10:55 you are fearing God, you are guilt in God. 10:58 We need to change us a little bit 10:59 because you are not having healthily worship. 11:02 So there is two steps here, we have to worship, 11:05 but we have to be careful about who we are worshipping-- 11:07 And how we are worshipping. How we are worshipping. 11:08 Who and how. All right. 11:09 We have to worship God, so in the story back in Daniel. 11:12 We have to worship the correct God. 11:14 Exactly. All right. 11:15 So the story back in Daniel, 11:16 that Daniel made him ten times smarter, 11:18 you know if there is other fellows had IQ of 120 11:21 Daniel's sitting at 1200. 11:23 It wasn't just about the food. 11:26 It was also about the worship, 11:28 the new mind, worshiping the right thing, 11:29 these new neural connections that make you smatter, 11:32 that turn off that stress hormones. 11:34 How do you think those boys there 11:36 loved those people, those captives? 11:38 That's anterior cingulated. 11:40 How do you think we love our enemies? 11:41 Well, that part of the brain grow 11:43 so much that the anterior cingulate develops 11:45 so we can love our enemies. 11:46 We can do things for the right reasons. 11:48 Can you image the PET scans on Enoch, 11:51 what his brain might have look like. 11:52 Can you image the PET scans of Christ, 11:55 what that might look like? 11:57 So this creating a new brain this worships, 11:59 there is real chemistry behind it 12:01 and now we are having the science to prove it. 12:05 I think of all kinds of text when you are saying that. 12:08 Let not your heart be troubled. 12:09 You're saying that the brain as it develops there, 12:12 fear and stress goes down, 12:14 you know, I-- 12:17 And it also affects the genetics, 12:18 the epigenetics of your body as well. 12:20 Which genes are expressed, 12:21 which cancer genes might be turned on, how you behavior? 12:24 It affects all aspects of diseases. 12:26 So worship, worship the act of worship 12:29 and also when we are worshipping the true God, 12:33 not the false God, not the angry God, 12:35 not the vengeful God, the true God, the God of love, 12:38 the God of grace, the God of forgiveness 12:40 actually brings about a physical change 12:43 in our brains that suppresses fear, 12:48 suppresses anger 12:50 and brings up the pleasure centers, 12:53 the endorphins, the joy, the happiness, 12:56 true joy and worship, 12:58 true joy with God, amazing. 12:59 We'll be right back, stay tuned. |
