The following program present principles designed 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.97 to promote good health and is not intended to take 00:00:03.00\00:00:05.48 the place of personalized professional care. 00:00:05.51\00:00:07.83 The opinions and ideas expressed are those of the speaker. 00:00:07.86\00:00:10.85 Viewers are encouraged to draw their own conclusions 00:00:10.88\00:00:13.24 about the information presented. 00:00:13.27\00:00:15.98 Ask anyone who is suffering from it. 00:00:16.01\00:00:18.77 And they will tell you the chronic pain 00:00:18.80\00:00:20.52 is like nothing else on earth. 00:00:20.55\00:00:22.54 It takes on a life of its own. 00:00:22.57\00:00:25.86 Stay tune. 00:00:25.89\00:00:28.07 I am Dr. James Marcum. 00:00:28.10\00:00:30.24 Are you interested in discovering 00:00:30.27\00:00:31.96 the reason why you want solutions 00:00:31.99\00:00:34.62 to your healthcare problems? 00:00:34.65\00:00:36.44 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:00:36.47\00:00:39.31 Well, you're about to be given the Ultimate Prescription. 00:00:39.34\00:00:44.34 It is a most unwelcome guest, 00:00:44.37\00:00:46.59 a bothersome visitor that won't go away. 00:00:46.62\00:00:49.70 It can bring about many physical and mental changes 00:00:49.73\00:00:52.42 equally unwelcomed. 00:00:52.45\00:00:54.70 If you're one of the millions of people 00:00:54.73\00:00:56.31 living with persistent pain or debilitating condition, 00:00:56.34\00:00:59.43 you might want to stop what you're doing 00:00:59.46\00:01:00.81 and pay close attention the next 30 minutes. 00:01:00.84\00:01:03.52 Chronic pain is real. 00:01:03.55\00:01:06.20 It's no respecter of person 00:01:06.23\00:01:08.04 and its prevalence is on the rise. 00:01:08.07\00:01:10.38 The good new is, it can be mitigated, sometimes a lot. 00:01:10.41\00:01:14.65 Dr. Marcum, what do we need to know about chronic pain? 00:01:14.68\00:01:17.85 Well, that's a big question, Charles. 00:01:17.88\00:01:19.53 There's a lot we need to know about it. 00:01:19.56\00:01:21.50 And I'm just glad everyone is tuned in today 00:01:21.53\00:01:24.42 because chronic pain in America 00:01:24.45\00:01:27.25 affects about 100 million people. 00:01:27.28\00:01:30.44 That's one in three. Wow. 00:01:30.47\00:01:32.31 And I guess everyone has heard about the epidemic now 00:01:32.34\00:01:35.52 and the treatment for chronic pain. 00:01:35.55\00:01:37.55 Unfortunately, we're not finding out 00:01:37.58\00:01:39.43 like we have talked about before the reason why. 00:01:39.46\00:01:42.40 Yes. We're just given medicines. 00:01:42.43\00:01:44.69 And unfortunately, narcotic addiction is on the rise. 00:01:44.72\00:01:49.57 Now some people, for with chronic pain 00:01:49.60\00:01:51.76 do need narcotics. 00:01:51.79\00:01:53.60 But in so many other peoples, there is other options. 00:01:53.63\00:01:56.92 Narcotics, a little bit becomes a little bit more, 00:01:56.95\00:01:59.16 becomes a little bit more and addiction forms 00:01:59.19\00:02:01.49 and these medications are now 00:02:01.52\00:02:03.01 one of the leading causes of death in America. 00:02:03.04\00:02:07.32 Yeah, I mean it's just scary, 00:02:07.35\00:02:08.69 so we need to talk about 00:02:08.72\00:02:09.94 the different pharmacological treatments. 00:02:09.97\00:02:12.77 We need to talk about 00:02:12.80\00:02:13.83 the different causes of chronic pain. 00:02:13.86\00:02:15.86 The different treatments 00:02:15.89\00:02:16.92 that can be given for chronic pains. 00:02:16.95\00:02:18.51 So it's a big subject. 00:02:18.54\00:02:20.53 We're gonna sort of hit on the highpoints. 00:02:20.56\00:02:22.50 We're also going to answer some questions about it. 00:02:22.53\00:02:24.93 But the reason we talk about it 00:02:24.96\00:02:26.26 and I try to talk about subjects 00:02:26.29\00:02:27.66 even though I am a cardiologist, 00:02:27.69\00:02:29.20 I did take some internal medicine. 00:02:29.23\00:02:30.77 But I do talk to people with all these problems 00:02:30.80\00:02:32.71 and we do a research and we do know 00:02:32.74\00:02:35.01 that we need to talk about 00:02:35.04\00:02:36.13 the things that happen most. 00:02:36.16\00:02:37.69 Depression, chronic pain, heart disease, 00:02:37.72\00:02:40.80 cancer these are things that it touches everyone's lives. 00:02:40.83\00:02:43.90 And someone out there might not have chronic pain 00:02:43.93\00:02:46.30 but I am sure you know someone that does have chronic pain. 00:02:46.33\00:02:49.60 And if you can help share with them, 00:02:49.63\00:02:51.32 help serve them, 00:02:51.35\00:02:52.54 you're improving your own chemistry 00:02:52.57\00:02:54.29 when you serve someone else. 00:02:54.32\00:02:55.55 But you might help them out of a tough spot. 00:02:55.58\00:02:57.60 You might keep them away from the dangerous medication, 00:02:57.63\00:03:00.16 which cause downhill consequences. 00:03:00.19\00:03:02.25 Now we are 6000 years from the hand of the Creator. 00:03:02.28\00:03:05.44 We're long way from Eden and we've a lot of sin in us. 00:03:05.47\00:03:09.80 Pain of course is connected directly to sin, 00:03:09.83\00:03:12.53 without sin you don't have pain. 00:03:12.56\00:03:15.99 Can we reasonably think that we're going to completely 00:03:16.02\00:03:19.46 eliminate pain from our lives? 00:03:19.49\00:03:21.79 I don't think so Charles. 00:03:21.82\00:03:23.00 I think there is always 00:03:23.03\00:03:24.06 going to be pain in a sinful situation. 00:03:24.09\00:03:27.09 And when you talk about 100 million people having pain. 00:03:27.12\00:03:30.01 Chronic pain is not like the pain 00:03:30.04\00:03:31.46 I am having in my ankle occasionally 00:03:31.49\00:03:33.20 because I sprained it. 00:03:33.23\00:03:34.51 Chronic pain is define of pain 00:03:34.54\00:03:36.23 that it goes on beyond six months. 00:03:36.26\00:03:39.21 So six months. Yeah, six months. 00:03:39.24\00:03:40.91 Now some people do three, some people do six, 00:03:40.94\00:03:42.89 but pretty much the standard definition of pain 00:03:42.92\00:03:45.40 that goes on beyond six months. 00:03:45.43\00:03:47.63 So the first thing we have, 00:03:47.66\00:03:49.19 when we have chronic pain that doesn't go away is. 00:03:49.22\00:03:51.62 One of the best treatments for chronic pain is to rest 00:03:51.65\00:03:54.79 the part that has pain. 00:03:54.82\00:03:56.36 And I see this in back over and over and over. 00:03:56.39\00:03:59.47 A guy hurts his back. 00:03:59.50\00:04:01.71 And he needs to go back to work, 00:04:01.74\00:04:04.07 and instead of letting the back heal, 00:04:04.10\00:04:06.24 may be letting it rest, 00:04:06.27\00:04:07.41 may be doing some physical therapy. 00:04:07.44\00:04:09.21 The body can heal itself many times. Yeah. 00:04:09.24\00:04:12.15 Instead of doing that he says I got to back to work. 00:04:12.18\00:04:13.97 I got to have something to relieve the pain, 00:04:14.00\00:04:15.68 so I can work, okay. 00:04:15.71\00:04:17.61 So he goes back to work, doesn't have the pain, 00:04:17.64\00:04:19.59 so he doesn't feel it. 00:04:19.62\00:04:20.65 But he keeps on working, and guess what? 00:04:20.68\00:04:23.01 In the process 'cause he can't feel the pain, 00:04:23.04\00:04:25.32 pain is something God gives us to say, 00:04:25.35\00:04:27.02 listen you shouldn't be doing that. 00:04:27.05\00:04:28.08 Because he is taking pain medication. 00:04:28.11\00:04:29.14 Right, he doesn't feel the pain. 00:04:29.17\00:04:30.20 All right, he has taken medicine. 00:04:30.23\00:04:31.26 But he should be feeling the pain. 00:04:31.29\00:04:32.32 Yes, he should be. 00:04:32.35\00:04:33.38 But he has not been feeling the pain, 00:04:33.41\00:04:34.44 so he keeps working harder and harder 00:04:34.47\00:04:35.50 and he is lifting and pulling and guess what? 00:04:35.53\00:04:37.14 Whatever is bad gets worst. 00:04:37.17\00:04:38.93 Yes, It's like, you know, 00:04:38.96\00:04:40.34 if you had a broken arm. 00:04:40.37\00:04:41.55 You'll put in a cache. 00:04:41.58\00:04:42.67 You wouldn't keep throwing fast balls 00:04:42.70\00:04:44.49 because it wouldn't be allowed to heal. 00:04:44.52\00:04:46.14 So sometimes chronic pain can be simple as, 00:04:46.17\00:04:48.26 listen I have pain and if I don't take care of it 00:04:48.29\00:04:50.81 and listen to it, something worst is going to happen. 00:04:50.84\00:04:53.67 So sometimes when you rest chronic pain 00:04:53.70\00:04:55.73 will get better in and of itself. 00:04:55.76\00:04:57.22 You know, I thought about this because sometimes 00:04:57.25\00:04:59.03 if I injure my arm or my leg 00:04:59.06\00:05:01.71 and I want to take an aspirin or a Tylenol, 00:05:01.74\00:05:04.08 I want to get rid of the pain. 00:05:04.11\00:05:05.58 I certainly say to myself. 00:05:05.61\00:05:06.66 Now, wait a minute, if I do this, 00:05:06.69\00:05:08.61 I am not going to feel the pain 00:05:08.64\00:05:10.71 and I could do more injury to myself 00:05:10.74\00:05:12.76 because I can just walk and work. 00:05:12.79\00:05:15.19 So when do we know to take the pill, 00:05:15.22\00:05:20.06 when do we know not to take the pill for pain, 00:05:20.09\00:05:24.12 this over-the-counter things. 00:05:24.15\00:05:25.69 Should we just learn to live with the pain 00:05:25.72\00:05:27.65 and then be aware as the body heals itself 00:05:27.68\00:05:30.00 and the pain slowly goes away. 00:05:30.03\00:05:31.70 Well, first of all. Which is hard to do. 00:05:31.73\00:05:33.38 Yeah, first of all if the pain is not going away, 00:05:33.41\00:05:36.33 it's a problem, okay. 00:05:36.36\00:05:37.93 For six months. Well that's a problem. 00:05:37.96\00:05:40.02 You have pain that goes on for six months. 00:05:40.05\00:05:41.56 It's the pain that keeps going on is the problem. Okay. 00:05:41.59\00:05:44.38 And the first part in evaluation of pain 00:05:44.41\00:05:46.81 is to find out what is causing the pain. 00:05:46.84\00:05:50.17 And when you know what's causing the pain, 00:05:50.20\00:05:52.05 you're more likely to be able to fix the pain. 00:05:52.08\00:05:54.58 Yeah. Okay, for instance I give this analogy. 00:05:54.61\00:05:56.81 You know, quite a bit. 00:05:56.84\00:05:58.25 If you're, you know, if you're hitting 00:05:58.28\00:06:01.75 your thumb with a hammer, okay. 00:06:01.78\00:06:04.32 You can take pain medicine for that but as long as 00:06:04.35\00:06:06.67 you're hitting it with the hammer, 00:06:06.70\00:06:07.87 something is gonna still hurt, okay. 00:06:07.90\00:06:09.99 So you want to find the cause 00:06:10.02\00:06:11.39 and if you think going from top to bottom, 00:06:11.42\00:06:13.58 what are some of the causes of chronic pain. 00:06:13.61\00:06:16.12 Well, let's start with our feet. 00:06:16.15\00:06:17.65 One of the most common causes of foot pain 00:06:17.68\00:06:19.88 is having foot malalignment. 00:06:19.91\00:06:22.75 If the foot is misaligned you're wearing bad shoes. 00:06:22.78\00:06:25.36 If there is not enough arch support, if there is, 00:06:25.39\00:06:27.69 if you're in high heels everyday, 00:06:27.72\00:06:29.54 you can have chronic pain just from your footwear. 00:06:29.57\00:06:32.28 You might be having things displaced in the foot, 00:06:32.31\00:06:34.41 you might have fasciitis and the treatment 00:06:34.44\00:06:36.50 for that is not to take a lot of medicines 00:06:36.53\00:06:38.81 but to correct the foot pain. 00:06:38.84\00:06:40.56 And this pain travels, what I have discovered 00:06:40.59\00:06:42.77 in my own life, this pain travels. 00:06:42.80\00:06:44.46 I had what I discovered was an arch 00:06:44.49\00:06:47.71 that was not supporting me and I did not know that. 00:06:47.74\00:06:50.00 And I was walking around for years 00:06:50.03\00:06:51.72 and I had back pains. Exactly. 00:06:51.75\00:06:54.06 And it was not, then I said what's wrong with my back. 00:06:54.09\00:06:56.75 But what I discovered was that my arches 00:06:56.78\00:06:58.54 weren't supporting me as they should. 00:06:58.57\00:06:59.85 When I got those little lifts they put in there, 00:06:59.88\00:07:01.81 little things in the shoes, my back pain went away. 00:07:01.84\00:07:04.83 Yeah. So sometimes pain is not 00:07:04.86\00:07:09.14 where you think it's going to be. 00:07:09.17\00:07:10.56 It reverts. It reverts, something hurts in the valve 00:07:10.59\00:07:13.28 which is causing the pain in that location. 00:07:13.31\00:07:14.78 Remember pain comes from the nervous system. 00:07:14.81\00:07:17.64 And these nerves come from the head to the toes. Yeah. 00:07:17.67\00:07:20.34 You know, so you know some people might be having pain 00:07:20.37\00:07:23.56 in the lower back, sciatica, a pinch nerve. 00:07:23.59\00:07:26.54 The treatment for that might just be some exercise, 00:07:26.57\00:07:29.78 some massage, even chiropractic care 00:07:29.81\00:07:32.11 can release the pressure on that nerve. 00:07:32.14\00:07:34.08 Exercise, rest that might be better than taking a medicine 00:07:34.11\00:07:37.69 and so doing the things that make it worst. 00:07:37.72\00:07:39.64 Okay. Other types of chronic pain. 00:07:39.67\00:07:41.82 If you've been in an accident having trauma, 00:07:41.85\00:07:43.64 having the nerves damage. 00:07:43.67\00:07:45.18 That's severely pain. 00:07:45.21\00:07:46.73 Sometimes cancer can cause chronic pain. 00:07:46.76\00:07:49.86 Irritable bowel can cause it. 00:07:49.89\00:07:52.22 Any joints, arthritis is a very common cause of chronic pain. 00:07:52.25\00:07:56.01 You heard the word fibromyalgia, 00:07:56.04\00:07:58.67 pains throughout the body. 00:07:58.70\00:08:00.19 You know that can cause chronic pain, 00:08:00.22\00:08:01.99 chronic headaches, okay. 00:08:02.02\00:08:03.93 Now chronic headaches for instance can be simple 00:08:03.96\00:08:06.60 as having a TMJ syndrome, where your joint, 00:08:06.63\00:08:09.43 your joints in your jaw is stimulating the nerves 00:08:09.46\00:08:12.72 which cause headaches. 00:08:12.75\00:08:13.83 Nowadays dentists have fittings that can help with that. 00:08:13.86\00:08:16.81 Sometimes chiropractic 00:08:16.84\00:08:18.24 can release the pressure on the nerves. 00:08:18.27\00:08:19.84 That might be a better option 00:08:19.87\00:08:21.54 than taking a lot of pain medicines. 00:08:21.57\00:08:23.53 So when you have chronic pain, 00:08:23.56\00:08:25.51 if possible find out the reason why 00:08:25.54\00:08:28.37 and that's going to help you. 00:08:28.40\00:08:29.44 Physicians for instance there is a lady the other day, 00:08:29.47\00:08:31.79 I saw that had a compression fracture 00:08:31.82\00:08:33.54 on her back of the spine. 00:08:33.57\00:08:35.19 That's where one of the spinous process 00:08:35.22\00:08:36.86 has just deteriorated. 00:08:36.89\00:08:38.26 Well, in that way she was taking narcotics. 00:08:38.29\00:08:40.67 Well, she wasn't going to the bathroom, 00:08:40.70\00:08:42.43 she is having lot of side effects 00:08:42.46\00:08:43.67 with her other medicines, she was thinking herself. 00:08:43.70\00:08:46.42 A good physician got hold of her and said, listen. 00:08:46.45\00:08:48.56 You know there is some cement 00:08:48.59\00:08:50.01 we can put into that called kyphoplasty 00:08:50.04\00:08:52.37 that might help with this fracture, 00:08:52.40\00:08:54.36 they put the kyphoplasty in. 00:08:54.39\00:08:55.87 Her pain went away, 00:08:55.90\00:08:56.98 so she needn't take the chronic pain medication. 00:08:57.01\00:08:58.97 Modern medicine at its best. 00:08:59.00\00:09:00.31 Yes, so there is a place where 00:09:00.34\00:09:01.98 if you can fix some things with modern medicine do that. 00:09:02.01\00:09:04.78 Another lady that this happened a couple months ago, 00:09:04.81\00:09:07.24 she was in the hospital Charles. 00:09:07.27\00:09:09.36 And she was having pain everyday in her back, 00:09:09.39\00:09:11.61 my back hurts, my back hurts. 00:09:11.64\00:09:13.13 And guess what? 00:09:13.16\00:09:14.19 They kept giving her pain medicines. 00:09:14.22\00:09:15.65 My back still hurts. 00:09:15.68\00:09:16.87 Well, we rolled her over and pulled the syringe, 00:09:16.90\00:09:19.94 the needle out of her back, 00:09:19.97\00:09:21.65 and guess what, her pain went away. 00:09:21.68\00:09:23.85 She had a needle that had got in her back 00:09:23.88\00:09:26.18 that was sticking her in back. 00:09:26.21\00:09:27.64 No one even cared to look or evaluate the pain. Have mercy. 00:09:27.67\00:09:30.70 So the first thing in chronic pain is have the pain evaluated. 00:09:30.73\00:09:34.05 Yes. Let's see what it is and what it isn't. 00:09:34.08\00:09:36.78 You know sometimes even medicines can cause pain. 00:09:36.81\00:09:39.56 A fellow came to me the other day, 00:09:39.59\00:09:41.11 he was having pain in all of his muscles. 00:09:41.14\00:09:42.81 You know, I just touched his muscles 00:09:42.84\00:09:44.29 and he would jump in pain. 00:09:44.32\00:09:45.50 He says it hurts all time. 00:09:45.53\00:09:46.57 I don't even feel like living. 00:09:46.60\00:09:47.84 Well, he happened to be on a medicine called the statin 00:09:47.87\00:09:50.74 which can cause Myositis inflammation 00:09:50.77\00:09:53.18 of all the joint pains. 00:09:53.21\00:09:54.52 He had that and he got that out of his life 00:09:54.55\00:09:56.57 and he got lot better. 00:09:56.60\00:09:58.25 Another lady came to me not too long 00:09:58.28\00:10:00.03 that had severe arthritis, 00:10:00.06\00:10:01.70 that's inflammation of the joints. 00:10:01.73\00:10:04.14 And you know, she just did some simple things 00:10:04.17\00:10:06.07 like drinking some more water which helps, 00:10:06.10\00:10:08.67 which helps joints have lubrication. 00:10:08.70\00:10:11.41 She did another simple thing 00:10:11.44\00:10:12.69 like she took some alpha omega-3 fatty acids, 00:10:12.72\00:10:15.18 which she got in almonds and walnuts. 00:10:15.21\00:10:17.21 She started doing that. 00:10:17.24\00:10:18.46 She started doing some simple exercises 00:10:18.49\00:10:20.66 which raised endorphins. 00:10:20.69\00:10:22.69 And her pain was controlled enough, 00:10:22.72\00:10:24.43 so she didn't have to take the narcotic. 00:10:24.46\00:10:26.33 She was able to move down to something less 00:10:26.36\00:10:29.38 called acetaminophen or Tylenol. 00:10:29.41\00:10:31.52 What I hear you saying is that when pain is present, 00:10:31.55\00:10:35.77 we need to start our search. 00:10:35.80\00:10:37.00 We need to start looking for the cause 00:10:37.03\00:10:38.87 and if we don't start looking for the cause 00:10:38.90\00:10:41.22 chances are we're not going to find the solution. Right. 00:10:41.25\00:10:44.67 And don't jump on the narcotic bandwagon right away. 00:10:44.70\00:10:47.99 Too many people are taking chronic narcotics, okay. 00:10:48.02\00:10:51.33 There are-- there is a place for them 00:10:51.36\00:10:53.38 but they have to be watched very closely 00:10:53.41\00:10:55.29 because they are addictive. 00:10:55.32\00:10:56.78 And you see all these pain clinics 00:10:56.81\00:10:58.69 and all these overuse of narcotics, 00:10:58.72\00:11:00.96 all the deaths from narcotics we see in the news. 00:11:00.99\00:11:03.47 Heath Ledger, Whitney Houston all of them had narcotics. 00:11:03.50\00:11:07.06 Now did they have physical pain or mental pain? 00:11:07.09\00:11:09.91 Some people are taking narcotics 00:11:09.94\00:11:11.44 for mental pain to escape from all the stress 00:11:11.47\00:11:14.19 that their body is under, 00:11:14.22\00:11:15.25 because they want to escape this 00:11:15.28\00:11:16.81 and that's not the solution at all. 00:11:16.84\00:11:18.58 There's other great treatments for pain 00:11:18.61\00:11:20.51 that people don't think about like music. 00:11:20.54\00:11:22.62 Music is a treatment for pain. 00:11:22.65\00:11:24.80 Worship is a treatment for pain as well as prayer. 00:11:24.83\00:11:28.59 There's just tons of ways we can treat chronic pain 00:11:28.62\00:11:31.52 if we can find out the reason why. 00:11:31.55\00:11:34.08 Do not be satisfied until you know the reason, 00:11:34.11\00:11:37.72 why I hear you say. Right. 00:11:37.75\00:11:38.78 Do not just say, okay, I have a pain, 00:11:38.81\00:11:41.57 I want a pill and I'll pay the bill 00:11:41.60\00:11:43.53 and everything will be fine. 00:11:43.56\00:11:45.07 Don't be satisfied with that. 00:11:45.10\00:11:46.83 When you have that pain, go searching for the reason. 00:11:46.86\00:11:49.84 And a lot of lifestyle issues are connected with pain. 00:11:49.87\00:11:53.31 A lot of them, Charles. We know-- 00:11:53.34\00:11:55.32 Doesn't cost you anything to make those kind of changes. 00:11:55.35\00:11:57.23 No, no, we know that people that don't exercise 00:11:57.26\00:11:59.99 and move their body parts have higher chances 00:12:00.02\00:12:02.67 of having joint and body pains. 00:12:02.70\00:12:04.65 Yeah.
