00:01 Dr. Marcum, before we get into our questions
00:02 that have been sent in to Heartwise Ministries, 00:03 I want to ask you something. 00:05 What is the philosophy of Heartwise Ministries? 00:08 Why are we here doing this program? 00:10 Why do you have a website? 00:11 Why do you have a ministry? 00:12 Well, you know, we talked a little bit about it already. 00:15 We want to put everything together. 00:17 You know, there's a place for modern medicine, 00:19 there's a place for lifestyle, there's a place for nutrition. 00:22 But what we want to add our philosophy 00:24 is we bring the ultimate physician into the equation. 00:28 We bring Him into the relationship, 00:30 bring Him into the life. 00:31 We look at, you know, how God gives us ways 00:33 to change our chemistry and that looks a little bit different. 00:36 How many doctors' offices if you've gone to, 00:39 where we talk about the spiritual matters. 00:41 You know what, Charles, I found that, 00:43 when you start talking about spiritual things in medicine. 00:46 Spiritual healing, the devil, the evil one would do everything 00:52 he can to make things not work, you know. 00:54 You know, who knows 00:56 when these lights might fall down on us. 00:58 He does everything he can all the time to prevent his message, 01:01 his truth in healing to get out there and you know what. 01:05 In our modern medicine where we are so focused 01:07 on the here and now, the symptoms. 01:09 We don't look a the big picture. 01:11 So the philosophy of Heartwise Ministries 01:14 is not only to encourage people 01:15 to look for the ultimate physician. 01:17 I don't have all the truth. 01:19 There's only one that has all the truth. 01:20 To look to Him for truth and continue 01:22 to grow and realize, we are humans. 01:25 You know, everything's not done in one day, 01:27 you know it takes time to learn 01:29 and we have to also look for truth. 01:31 Get rid of some of the preconceived notions 01:33 we have and take the time to listen. 01:36 Listen to God as He comes to us, 01:38 and He wants to be the healer, 01:40 He wants to be the physician. 01:41 So I just treat symptoms, Charles. 01:43 All of us are healers when we minister to one and others, 01:46 but the ultimate doctor we should be looking 01:49 through to answers is up there. 01:51 And if we start doing this, we're going to have healing 01:54 and that's sort of what our philosophy 01:55 is and that's a little bit how we are different 01:57 than some of the other ministries out there. 01:59 All of who are doing great things, 02:01 but we want to continue to find spiritual things, 02:04 things in the Bible that change our chemistry. 02:07 Every bit as much more so than medicines and pills 02:10 but also leads to eternal healing. 02:12 We also want to work in people's minds 02:14 and meet them where they are. 02:15 And to love them and to help 02:16 and not judge them, because all that guilt, you know. 02:19 Lot of people are unhealthy out there 02:21 and it just takes time, so to get them back 02:24 to their health, and that's what we try to teach 02:26 that we can do things one step at a time 02:28 with a direction of the ultimate healer in our lives. 02:31 We have an interesting point that sometimes 02:34 when we go with a modern medicine and we feel better. 02:40 Yeah. You think, okay, 02:41 everything is fine, everything is fixed. 02:43 I feel great, I am taking these drugs now 02:45 and I've had this procedure and I've had this done 02:47 to me here and there. 02:49 Everything must be good to go now, 02:51 so there's no need for me to make 02:52 any lifestyle changes, there's no need 02:54 for me to change my diet because the doctor 02:56 has fixed me up with this wonderful pill that I have 02:58 in my body now, it is taking care of the problem. 03:01 I am good to go. 03:02 But you're saying that may not be the case. 03:05 Right. Let me give you an illustration, Charles? Sure. 03:07 I take this hammer out. 03:09 Okay, this is a reflex hammer. 03:11 When you test the reflex. 03:12 And I start banging you on the head, 03:14 over and over and over and over. 03:16 And you said, neigh, that hurts. 03:18 Yes. That hurts a lot. 03:19 You know, the solution is not to take a pill and dull the pain. 03:25 It might not hurt anymore or give you a medicine 03:27 that knock you out, you might have feel it, 03:29 the real solution is to quit hitting you in the head. 03:32 And that's what we have to get in modern medicine. 03:34 We have to get to the real answers, why? 03:36 If someone's not sleeping at night, 03:38 whoops, knocked the book cover. 03:39 Why am I not sleeping well at night? 03:41 Yeah. If you have acid 03:42 in your stomach, you know why, why is there, you know, 03:45 why is there too much acid in the stomach. 03:46 If you're having pain anywhere, why am I having pain? 03:49 If you had a heart attack, why did you have a heart attack? 03:51 If you have depression, why do you have depression? 03:54 And that if we ask the question, why? 03:56 And bring the Holy Spirit through our relationship 03:59 with God in the equation, 04:00 He will help us find out the reasons why. 04:03 That is so important for us to know 04:05 that the philosophy of health needs to center around that word 04:08 'why' why is this happening. 04:09 Why am I doing this? 04:12 What is driving me into this ill health? 04:15 Why, why, why, why? 04:16 And that's how our philosophy is a little bit different. 04:19 You know, we want to take what everyone else's doing 04:21 and add a new dimension. 04:22 All right. Here's some questions, 04:23 Dr. Marcum from Heartwiseministries.org 04:26 and I invite you viewers to send your questions 04:28 into that address because we love to address them like 04:31 we are doing right now on the program. 04:34 Question number one, this is interesting. 04:36 Do you actually see patients or do you just write books, 04:39 make health programs and answer questions on the internet? 04:42 Well, that's a great question. 04:44 Because a lot of the programs out there we see in health, 04:47 the doctors are doing this full time. 04:49 Yeah. And I wish sometimes, 04:50 I could do it full time but I still practice, 04:52 I see on my on days, I usually see 32 patients in the office. 04:56 I work for the Chattanooga Heart Institute 04:58 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, but at the same time, 05:01 that lets me meet people where they are at and understand 05:04 their real needs, and not living on ivory tower. 05:07 Yeah. You know I've had a fellow come 05:08 to me the other day and he needed some dietary counseling, 05:11 you know, he weighed a lot, about near 400 pounds 05:14 and he ate at the Cracker Barrel a lot, a lot. 05:17 And we had to meet him where he is at and we said, 05:20 listen, may be instead of eating at the Cracker Barrel every day, 05:22 may be you should limit it to one or two times a week 05:25 and start there, so in the office, 05:27 you get to meet people where they are. 05:29 You get to understand them. 05:30 And you also get to introduce 05:32 him to this great physician on a personal basis. 05:35 And some people don't even know how to pray 05:37 or how to start a relationship with God 05:39 and that's why I really still like seeing patients 05:41 every day in the office. Absolutely, absolutely. 05:43 So I see patients. That's why, 05:44 that's why I trust what you say because, 05:46 here is a man who is seeing people on a daily basis 05:50 and what he is saying to us, he has seen work, 05:53 not years ago, not in some test some place 05:56 but in his own office. And that's kind of nice. 05:58 You know, I want to interrupt you here, 05:59 I was in California recently doing a television program 06:02 with the other ministry and there was a doctor 06:05 there that wrote great books and he looked young. 06:07 You know, he is like 37 years old and I said, 06:09 well, do you see, you know he went to medical school 06:12 and I said, you see patients. 06:13 Oh, no, I don't see any patients, 06:15 I just travel from place to place selling books in writing. 06:19 So he doesn't really see the patients. 06:20 So lot of the people out there really don't have 06:23 that practical experience. 06:24 So I try to bring the practicality, 06:26 the real world and most of us live in the real world. 06:29 You know, sometimes I meet patients, 06:31 that are that, who can do everything 06:32 at once and more power to them, 06:34 but most of us live in the real world 06:36 and we have to meet people where they are at. 06:38 Absolutely, absolutely. Another question here, 06:40 we've talked a little about this. How is Hearwise different 06:44 from other ministries, and of course 06:45 we can also include in there, 06:47 this television ministry, this television program, 06:49 how is it different from Dr. Oz for instance. 06:53 Yeah. This is a very popular program 06:55 and he does a lot of stuff, talks a lot about the subjects 06:58 that are important to all of us. 07:00 How is Ultimate Prescription different from Oz. 07:04 Yeah, well, several differences, okay. 07:05 First of all, that we acknowledge, the ultimate, 07:08 we are just conduits, we are just messengers 07:10 and we like to think that we are giving out 07:12 the message that comes from God. 07:14 So that's we acknowledge, He is the ultimate physician, 07:16 He is the one we want to give all praise and glory 07:19 to and look to the answers. 07:20 That's one thing that we are different. 07:22 You don't see that in a lot of other programs, 07:24 with upfront they say that. 07:25 The second thing is, we are not selling anything. 07:28 We are not selling a herb, we are not selling a medication, 07:31 we are not selling some treatment, 07:32 we are not selling anything, okay. 07:34 We don't get paid to do this, okay. 07:37 We don't make our living doing this. 07:39 We do this, both you and I, 07:40 and the people involved in Heartwise Ministries 07:42 because we want to serve. That's right. 07:44 And in that service, we also get a chemical benefit, 07:47 you know, so I get a chemical benefit because, 07:50 when I serve, I am actually in the state of worship, 07:52 so I am, when I am doing programs like this, 07:55 I am actually making my chemistry better, 07:56 I'm lowering my stress levels, I'm creating 08:00 new pathways in my brain. 08:01 We are going to talk about this on another program, 08:03 so I am actually, when service, 08:05 I am actually helping myself in that way. 08:06 So that's just two of the ways we are different. 08:08 Yeah, yeah. Interesting that when we are loving people, 08:11 when we are providing a service, when we are showing 08:15 them kindness, and giving them information 08:18 that they need to be healthy, spiritually and physically. 08:22 It's a medicine for ourselves.. Yeah, 08:23 in some of the other programs, 08:24 I worry about, you know, they give good information, 08:28 but sometimes I worry about where their motivation 08:30 is coming from, you know, why are they really doing this. 08:33 You know, is it something that they want to do, 08:35 because they want someone to do better and feel better 08:37 and to be permanently healed, where it might be there 08:40 some other reasons involved because the reason 08:42 why they are doing things is important too. 08:46 That brings to mind an important question it was asked 08:49 at HeartwiseMinistries.org recently 08:52 and I have it here on my list, but I get this a lot from people 08:55 on the radio program, and in our television program. 08:58 They want to know how do you, a cardiologist, 09:01 how do you, Dr. Marcum, when you are confronted 09:05 with the same flood, and I imagine 09:07 for a medical doctor the flood is even greater, 09:10 a flood of information, a flood of products, 09:13 a flood of latest and greatest, a flood of studies, 09:16 how do you personally shift through it, 09:19 and beside what you want to present to your patients. 09:24 How do you do that because 09:26 we need to learn how to do that too. 09:27 Yeah, that's the great place that I learned 09:29 how to do this is in my personal worship, 09:32 in my personal time with God. 09:34 I specifically ask Him to show me things, 09:37 show me new truths, show me places 09:39 that I needed to go, lead me. 09:41 And when there's something that comes up, 09:43 I look at the science behind it, I look to see if it agrees 09:46 with the principles in the Bible and then I pray about it. 09:49 God is this something that you want 09:51 me to add to my patient's lives. 09:54 Is this something that You would recommend 09:55 and more than that is that something that enhances 09:58 the relationship I have with you, 10:00 and my patients will have with you? 10:01 And if all the answers to that question are lining up, 10:05 then I say, well, this is something 10:06 that I need to increase. 10:08 What I've really been working on lately is how our brains 10:11 and our health interact, you know. 10:14 And that's one of the places, that God has been moving 10:16 me through the scriptures to bring this out 10:19 and let people know that our minds, our brains, 10:21 it's influenced by so many things now. 10:23 This is a key to our health and it's a key to understanding. 10:27 You know, what medicines should we take, 10:29 which one shouldn't we take. 10:30 How do we get to this better lifestyle? 10:32 How do we eat better? 10:33 How do we relate to each other? 10:35 So this is going to be key to understanding our minds a lot, 10:38 and unfortunately through the years the mind, the brain, 10:41 we have done very few studies 10:43 on how the brain interacts with health. 10:45 You know, we can treat the downhill 10:47 of that to the brains, 10:48 but we are not getting sometimes at the core of the problem. 10:50 You know there is a text in the Bible, 10:52 as a man thinketh so he is, create me a new heart. 10:57 All of these things that God says, 10:58 over 700 times, He refers to the heart. 11:04 It is sometimes shocking, that connection between 11:07 the physical health and the mental health. 11:09 They are so intertwined and the good news 11:12 is Dr. Marcum, when you give suggestions 11:15 on this program for exercise and diet and philosophy, 11:21 it's going to affect both the mind and the body equally. 11:24 There's going to be healing on both sides of that aisle. 11:27 And that is good news for anyone listening. 11:29 Well, we will take a short break right now. 11:31 When we come back, I am going to ask Dr. Marcum, 11:34 if he would take us to have an appointment 11:37 with the ultimate physician. 11:39 We can all do this at home. 11:40 We can do this any time, 24/7 he is open 11:43 and that is to come to the ultimate physician, 11:45 the master physician, the loving God that loves us in prayer. 11:49 And Dr. Marcum, will do that when we return. 11:52 It's very important that we include conversations 11:56 with God in our healing processes. 11:58 So stay right where you are. 12:08 Thank you for joining us today on the "Ultimate Prescription." 12:11 On program today, we talked a little bit about 12:14 the philosophy of Heartwise Ministries 12:17 and the philosophy of health. 12:18 And you know there's many things that entail health 12:21 and I think we've talked about them today but one of the things 12:24 I want to leave you with, no matter what you leave 12:26 the program with today, I want you to realize 12:28 that the Ultimate Prescription, the part of the healing triangle 12:32 that must be incorporated, is that relationship 12:36 we have with the heavenly Father. 12:39 That's what we do different than other health programs. 12:41 Yes, there is a place for lifestyle, 12:43 and we want everyone to eat healthy, 12:45 lots of fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains, 12:48 drink lots of water, we want that. 12:49 But at the same time we understand 12:52 that there are some people that they might 12:53 move along this in a slow pathway. 12:55 Everything might not happen at once. 12:57 We also want people to have a healthy lifestyle 12:59 and get out there and do exercise 13:01 and get enough rest and all those things. 13:04 But we also know as we've talked about 13:06 early that we have the ultimate physician, 13:08 that great physician, that we can come to every day 13:11 and He is going to help us make changes. 13:13 Even if those changes are just one step at a time. 13:16 Even if it's slow, and even if we mess up 13:19 one day in our health, if we forget our medicines, 13:21 or forget our treatments or whatever we are working on, 13:24 we can come to Him the next day, 13:26 and He's going to be there to love us and to take care of us. 13:30 There might be someone out there that needs prayer 13:32 for healing or help to change the lifestyle 13:35 or to do a little bit better. 13:36 Or there might be someone out there that's never had 13:39 this relationship with their heavenly Father 13:41 as part of their treatment regimen. 13:43 Well, I want to pray for you right now, 13:45 and I also I want to invite you to send your questions 13:48 and comments to our website, heartwiseministries.org, 13:51 where we can answer your questions directly. 13:53 Let's just bow our heads together. 13:58 Father in heaven, as we come before You, 14:01 we want to invite Your Holy Spirit into our hearts 14:04 so we can listen to Your voice, do away with our preconceived 14:08 notions about health and healing and help us to realize 14:11 that You are the ultimate physician that one 14:13 we should turn to for answers in our healthcare. 14:15 We want to include you in every aspect of our lives, Father. 14:19 And if some one there might need this extra help today, 14:22 Father, please come into their lives and show them 14:25 how to keep this relationship with You going, 14:27 is our prayer, amen." 14:31 I want to thank you 14:32 for joining us on the "Ultimate Prescription." 14:34 You can learn more about Heartwise Ministries 14:36 and get your questions answered by going 14:39 to our website heartwiseminsitries.org. 14:42 I want to wish all of you the best of health 14:45 and remember go to the ultimate physician daily 14:48 and He would give you permanent healing. |
