We all live in a very toxic environment. 00:00:17.41\00:00:20.23 Our homes, our places of business. 00:00:20.26\00:00:22.38 We can't escape. Or can we? Stay tuned. 00:00:22.41\00:00:27.69 I'm Dr. James Marcum. 00:00:27.72\00:00:29.77 Are you interested in discovering the reason why? 00:00:29.80\00:00:33.01 You want solutions to your health care problems. 00:00:33.04\00:00:35.93 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:00:35.96\00:00:38.74 Well, you're about to be given the "Ultimate Prescription." 00:00:38.77\00:00:43.30 "You've got cancer." 00:00:43.33\00:00:45.06 Those are about the last words 00:00:45.09\00:00:46.46 you want to hear from your doctor. 00:00:46.49\00:00:48.49 I'm sure those are the last words 00:00:48.52\00:00:49.91 he or she wants to say to you, too. 00:00:49.94\00:00:51.82 But can we really do something and minimize our vulnerability 00:00:51.85\00:00:54.91 when it comes to this dreaded disease? 00:00:54.94\00:00:57.19 Let's talk with Dr. James Marcum about cancer, prevention 00:00:57.22\00:01:00.81 and what part nutrition plays in the battle 00:01:00.84\00:01:03.08 for survival in this cancer generating world. 00:01:03.11\00:01:05.93 It's part of our examination 00:01:05.96\00:01:07.33 of the major causes of death in this world. 00:01:07.36\00:01:10.09 Dr. Marcum, make the connections for us, toxins and malignancy. 00:01:10.12\00:01:13.95 Yeah, if we remember what we talked about 00:01:13.98\00:01:16.29 in our last program on cancer, we came up with these words. 00:01:16.32\00:01:19.23 Prolonged exposure and not following the way 00:01:19.26\00:01:23.69 we originally designed leads to difficult problems. Yes. 00:01:23.72\00:01:28.88 When it comes to cancer, Charles, 00:01:28.91\00:01:30.51 everyone is so scared about cancer. 00:01:30.54\00:01:33.20 The rates are rising. 00:01:33.23\00:01:35.09 Unfortunately, I think we're focusing too much 00:01:35.12\00:01:37.64 on acute care treatment even though that's important. 00:01:37.67\00:01:40.75 It's very important to get acute care treatment. 00:01:40.78\00:01:42.69 But we want to minimize exposures to toxins. 00:01:42.72\00:01:46.34 And we've talked about that a little bit, 00:01:46.37\00:01:47.93 both in our diet, our lifestyle, our weight. 00:01:47.96\00:01:52.26 Unfortunately, we can't take all toxins out of the world. 00:01:52.29\00:01:54.76 We can't do that. 00:01:54.79\00:01:57.02 The second thing we really want to do 00:01:57.05\00:01:58.55 is we want to detect cancer early. 00:01:58.58\00:02:00.83 And that's what I wanted to talk today about to let our 00:02:00.86\00:02:03.03 listeners know it's very important 00:02:03.06\00:02:04.82 to detect cancer early. 00:02:04.85\00:02:06.42 Because if treated before this malignancy spreads, 00:02:06.45\00:02:09.99 it can be cured early. 00:02:10.02\00:02:11.39 And then we can get back to doing all the things 00:02:11.42\00:02:14.43 we need to do to avoid the toxins. 00:02:14.46\00:02:16.64 It's not dissimilar from heart disease. 00:02:16.67\00:02:18.75 We want to take care of the acute care problem 00:02:18.78\00:02:20.84 and then get back to the ways to prevent the problem. 00:02:20.93\00:02:23.08 Now that was after you got a bypass surgery, 00:02:23.11\00:02:24.89 after you put a stent in, that patient needs to go back 00:02:24.92\00:02:28.39 and do some very different things. Right. 00:02:28.42\00:02:29.79 It didn't fix the problem but it bought him some time. 00:02:29.82\00:02:31.70 There you go. And that's the place 00:02:31.73\00:02:33.29 for modern medicine, maybe to buy some time. 00:02:33.32\00:02:35.34 If we pick this up early, before it becomes 00:02:35.37\00:02:37.48 a huge catastrophic problem, it's very treatable. 00:02:37.51\00:02:41.19 So what type of screening should be done? 00:02:41.22\00:02:43.61 Well, we talked about skin cancer a little bit 00:02:43.64\00:02:46.49 And now-a-days we have all these sun tanning beds. 00:02:46.52\00:02:49.21 You remember getting a sun tanning bed, do you, Charles? 00:02:49.24\00:02:50.86 I never have. I know some people that do. 00:02:50.89\00:02:53.08 They lay in those for hours at a time. 00:02:53.11\00:02:54.90 They get all this damage to the skin. 00:02:54.93\00:02:56.90 It mutates some of the cells. 00:02:56.93\00:02:59.04 Also, you know, the sunbathers-- 00:02:59.07\00:03:00.73 some people get out and sunbathe for hours and hours. 00:03:00.76\00:03:02.25 That I've done, yes. 00:03:02.28\00:03:03.65 And that's not good. Yeah. 00:03:03.68\00:03:05.05 And it's the burning into your skin, that's really the damage. 00:03:05.08\00:03:06.98 And prolonged exposure to sun-- burning type sun, 00:03:07.01\00:03:09.84 not the outside that you normally get, 00:03:09.87\00:03:11.71 that's good for you, but that can raise 00:03:11.74\00:03:13.98 the chance of having skin cancer. 00:03:14.01\00:03:16.06 And there's a very deadly form of skin cancer called melanoma. 00:03:16.09\00:03:20.11 And that needs to be detected right away 'cause it's not that 00:03:20.14\00:03:22.64 common, but it's a very dangerous cancer. 00:03:22.67\00:03:25.50 So if you are looking at your skin 00:03:25.53\00:03:27.26 and you see a mole that's discolored, 00:03:27.29\00:03:29.52 that's irregular, that's getting bigger, 00:03:29.55\00:03:31.65 you need to have that evaluated right away. 00:03:31.68\00:03:34.33 And part of a good exam a doctor will do for you is he will, 00:03:34.36\00:03:38.40 you know, look at your skin to make sure 00:03:38.43\00:03:40.46 there's no suspicious mole or nevus, sometimes we call it. 00:03:40.49\00:03:45.15 And if there is, they'll biopsy that to make sure 00:03:45.18\00:03:48.03 it's not a cancer and detected early. 00:03:48.06\00:03:50.48 Now the most common types of skin cancers 00:03:50.51\00:03:52.64 are the ones in the face. Usually those are benign. 00:03:52.67\00:03:55.43 But sometimes if they are not detected early, 00:03:55.46\00:03:57.36 they can continue to grow and eat into tissue. 00:03:57.39\00:04:00.01 So skin cancer is very important to detect early. 00:04:00.04\00:04:03.39 We talked about lung cancer. 00:04:03.42\00:04:04.79 There's not a good screening test for lung cancer. 00:04:04.82\00:04:07.75 Even though people have suggested that X-rays 00:04:07.78\00:04:10.65 and CAT scans might help, there's no great screening test 00:04:10.68\00:04:13.89 but I just recommend a good family history. 00:04:13.92\00:04:17.10 And if the cancer again in the lungs detected early 00:04:17.13\00:04:19.75 they can reset that and take that out of the body. 00:04:19.78\00:04:22.74 If it's spread, then that's a bigger problem. 00:04:22.77\00:04:25.53 It's harder to stop once cancer is spread 00:04:25.56\00:04:28.22 and got into the lymph system. 00:04:28.25\00:04:29.88 So once cancer is moved out, 00:04:29.91\00:04:31.28 it becomes a much tougher thing to treat. 00:04:31.31\00:04:33.56 That's when they start hitting you with chemotherapy 00:04:33.59\00:04:35.82 with its inherent risk, radiation, all those things. 00:04:35.85\00:04:39.85 So lung cancer, you know, we can screen with the family history. 00:04:39.88\00:04:42.63 And, of course, if you quit smoking, 00:04:42.66\00:04:44.81 that's gonna lower your risk quite a bit. 00:04:44.84\00:04:47.39 We talked about colon cancer. 00:04:47.42\00:04:49.26 Very important to screen for colon cancer. 00:04:49.29\00:04:51.79 We talked about prolonged exposure, 00:04:51.82\00:04:53.96 you know, especially to toxins in the gut 00:04:53.99\00:04:56.54 that we weren't designed to handle. 00:04:56.57\00:04:58.54 And we talked about new things that would help lower that risk, 00:04:58.57\00:05:01.05 to speed up transit time. 00:05:01.08\00:05:02.45 We talked about fiber. 00:05:02.48\00:05:03.99 Just if people would eat 12 grams of fiber a day, 00:05:04.02\00:05:07.40 that's a big bran muffin, they could eliminate 00:05:07.43\00:05:10.10 50,000 colon cancer cases around the world. 00:05:10.13\00:05:13.31 That's pretty powerful, just to eat fiber. 00:05:13.34\00:05:15.91 Now fiber doesn't get absorbed in you 00:05:15.94\00:05:17.40 but it helps move the transit time. 00:05:17.43\00:05:19.36 So if you eat bad stuff, I'd say, you know, 00:05:19.39\00:05:21.28 I don't want you to eat bad stuff, Charles. 00:05:21.31\00:05:23.20 But if you were to eat something bad, 00:05:23.23\00:05:24.60 I'd say, well, let's speed up the transit. 00:05:24.63\00:05:26.00 Let's stand up. 00:05:26.03\00:05:27.40 Let gravity help pull it through. 00:05:27.43\00:05:29.31 Let's drink a lot of water and eat some fiber. 00:05:29.34\00:05:32.00 Unfortunately, we eat our bad stuff late at night 00:05:32.03\00:05:34.50 or the couple of guys that go out 00:05:34.53\00:05:35.90 to the Golden Corral to eat a big meal at night. 00:05:35.93\00:05:37.75 They come home and watch their favorite TV and they lay down. 00:05:37.78\00:05:40.69 Well, their risk of colon cancer is going higher and higher. So-- 00:05:40.72\00:05:43.88 So--but we want to screen people. 00:05:43.91\00:05:45.55 And normally a person gets a screening test 00:05:45.58\00:05:48.10 which is called a colonoscopy at age 50. 00:05:48.13\00:05:51.81 Now if you've had a family history of colon cancer, 00:05:51.84\00:05:54.72 let's say, your dad had it at 45, 00:05:54.75\00:05:56.82 we recommend screening testing 10 years before. 00:05:56.85\00:05:59.75 So you would get yours at age of 35. 00:05:59.78\00:06:02.42 And what they'll do is, they put you to sleep. 00:06:02.45\00:06:04.28 And they have a small tube that goes up there with a light. 00:06:04.31\00:06:06.70 And they look for suspicious areas in the wall. 00:06:06.73\00:06:09.42 And we've talk about how the toxins, the bile salts 00:06:09.45\00:06:12.12 and whatever damage the wall. 00:06:12.15\00:06:13.92 It causes these cells to go. 00:06:13.95\00:06:15.32 And if they cannot see them early on 00:06:15.35\00:06:16.72 and if they can remove these parts before it gets serious, 00:06:16.75\00:06:19.35 it can prevent colon cancer. 00:06:19.38\00:06:20.90 Once colon cancer has spread, it's a beast. 00:06:20.93\00:06:24.14 It's a beast to kill because it's grown 00:06:24.17\00:06:26.23 and gets in the immune system. 00:06:26.26\00:06:27.63 It goes everywhere. 00:06:27.66\00:06:29.03 So screening for colon cancer is very important. 00:06:29.06\00:06:31.37 Breast cancer, everyone knows about breast cancer. 00:06:31.40\00:06:34.67 Women, you know, since there is a one in eight chance 00:06:34.70\00:06:36.33 of getting breast cancer, they're exposed to estrogen 00:06:36.36\00:06:39.54 in our environment, unfortunately, 00:06:39.57\00:06:41.58 they need to get screening mammograms to make sure 00:06:41.61\00:06:44.95 they're not-- and breast self-examination. 00:06:44.98\00:06:47.21 Examine your own breasts. 00:06:47.24\00:06:48.79 I had a lady that I saw in the hospital not too long ago. 00:06:48.82\00:06:52.27 They noticed her breast was dimpling. 00:06:52.30\00:06:54.34 She had a hard mass there. 00:06:54.37\00:06:56.33 And we asked her, "How long this has been going on?" 00:06:56.36\00:06:58.00 "Oh, about a year." 00:06:58.03\00:06:59.95 So by the time we, you know, saw where it was gone, 00:06:59.98\00:07:02.54 it had all gone throughout the lymph system. 00:07:02.57\00:07:04.60 It was already metastasized to the liver 00:07:04.63\00:07:07.51 and it had even gone to the brain. 00:07:07.54\00:07:09.45 So at that point, you know, it's--in modern medicine, 00:07:09.48\00:07:13.57 you're not gonna do a whole lot. 00:07:13.60\00:07:15.13 It's got, you know, sort of, the cat's out of the bag. 00:07:15.16\00:07:18.26 But the good news we're able to tell this lady is that, 00:07:18.29\00:07:20.47 you know, no matter what it is, we still have, you know, 00:07:20.50\00:07:23.82 a God that's gonna heal you. 00:07:23.85\00:07:25.60 And we hope, you know, to have that healing at some point, 00:07:25.63\00:07:28.35 you know, in heaven or sometimes miracles do happen. 00:07:28.38\00:07:30.99 So we always want to give people hope. 00:07:31.02\00:07:33.16 So another cancer we screen for is breast cancer. 00:07:33.19\00:07:35.61 We got colon cancer. We sort of screen for spleen. 00:07:35.64\00:07:38.17 In men, prostate cancer is a big deal. Yeah. 00:07:38.20\00:07:41.68 And that's, sort of, hard to take. 00:07:41.71\00:07:43.74 You know, prostate cancer in men, of course, 00:07:43.77\00:07:45.58 it's sort of an estrogen type situation. 00:07:45.61\00:07:48.24 Lot of the men have prostate cancer that never develops. 00:07:48.27\00:07:51.48 But in a man, you know, they get a routine prostate check, 00:07:51.51\00:07:54.60 usually, at age 50 with the PSA exam. 00:07:54.63\00:07:58.10 And they see if they have prostate cancer. 00:07:58.13\00:07:59.71 Now whether to treat that cancer is sort of controversial. 00:07:59.74\00:08:04.25 But, of course, if it's causing problems with obstructing 00:08:04.28\00:08:06.76 a neuron or if it's--if it looks like it's gonna spread, 00:08:06.79\00:08:09.49 there are multiple nodules, usually they-- 00:08:09.52\00:08:11.66 first they biopsy it. 00:08:11.69\00:08:13.06 And they usually resect the cancer 00:08:13.09\00:08:14.46 and get out the local cancer. 00:08:14.49\00:08:15.86 And, of course, they screen to make sure it hasn't spread. 00:08:15.89\00:08:19.19 So those are the main type of cancers. 00:08:19.22\00:08:21.23 And unfortunately, there's terrible cancers in our bodies 00:08:21.26\00:08:23.55 like pancreatic cancer, the bone marrow cancer, 00:08:23.58\00:08:26.83 if you have a family history that can usually be followed 00:08:26.86\00:08:29.46 by just a complete blood count. 00:08:29.49\00:08:31.51 And sometimes they can look for certain proteins 00:08:31.54\00:08:33.70 in your body if you've a family history of multiple myeloma 00:08:33.73\00:08:36.51 or some of the bone marrow cancers. 00:08:36.54\00:08:38.30 We don't routinely do bone marrow biopsy 00:08:38.33\00:08:40.48 of things of that nature. 00:08:40.51\00:08:42.58 But screening for cancer is very, very important because 00:08:42.61\00:08:45.87 modern medicine is great if it's picked up at an early stage. 00:08:45.90\00:08:49.24 You can cure cancer. 00:08:49.27\00:08:51.12 Now lot of people, unfortunately, don't get 00:08:51.15\00:08:54.01 those two pieces of information when they talk about cancer. 00:08:54.04\00:08:56.76 They don't get early detection. 00:08:56.79\00:08:58.68 For whatever reason they don't do that. 00:08:58.71\00:09:00.80 They're probably afraid. 00:09:00.83\00:09:02.20 They don't want to know about this. 00:09:02.23\00:09:03.60 And the second thing they don't want to do 00:09:03.63\00:09:05.44 is they don't want to change their exposure to toxins. 00:09:05.47\00:09:08.87 You know, prolong exposures for whatever reason. 00:09:08.90\00:09:12.80 You know, because the world is either told them that 00:09:12.83\00:09:14.62 they can't do this or, you know, they have to smoke cigarettes 00:09:14.65\00:09:17.98 or they have to eat this way. 00:09:18.01\00:09:19.38 There's societal pressures. 00:09:19.41\00:09:21.29 And when you think about pressures in the society, 00:09:21.32\00:09:23.35 Charles, I think about 150 years ago, let's say. 00:09:23.38\00:09:27.38 You know, we talked about-- earlier we talked about 00:09:27.41\00:09:29.45 if you weren't putting leeches on people 00:09:29.48\00:09:31.54 you're a bad doctor. Right. 00:09:31.57\00:09:33.24 But 150 years ago, if I came up to you and, Charles, and said, 00:09:33.27\00:09:36.48 "Charles, a plant based diet is the best diet for you." 00:09:36.51\00:09:41.27 They would think I was crazy. 00:09:41.30\00:09:43.20 I would be ostracized, you know? 00:09:43.23\00:09:45.15 Really, I would. Yeah. 00:09:45.18\00:09:46.55 But now we're saying this and they are saying, 00:09:46.58\00:09:49.00 "You know, there's something to this." 00:09:49.03\00:09:50.52 You know, people are beginning to listen. 00:09:50.55\00:09:51.98 The evidence is there. Society is understanding it. 00:09:52.01\00:09:54.79 This is important to our health. 00:09:54.82\00:09:56.26 Science has finally caught up with what God told us all along. 00:09:56.29\00:09:59.09 It's exactly correct. Wow. 00:09:59.12\00:10:00.83 But I'm gonna take that one step further is, 00:10:00.86\00:10:02.99 it's also our brains involved in all this, too 00:10:03.02\00:10:05.66 because our brain needs the power to help us 00:10:05.69\00:10:08.76 to make these changes 00:10:08.79\00:10:10.16 that society is pushing us the other direction, you know-- 00:10:10.19\00:10:12.77 Are we damaging our brain with our living? 00:10:12.80\00:10:14.48 Yes, yes. We are actually-- 00:10:14.51\00:10:16.62 when we do things, prolonged exposures 00:10:16.65\00:10:19.28 to things we weren't designed could damage the brain. Wow. 00:10:19.31\00:10:21.94 And I'm just gonna throw this out on this, 00:10:21.97\00:10:23.54 we're gonna do more programs about this. 00:10:23.57\00:10:25.23 But if you think about it, 00:10:25.26\00:10:26.92 we were never designed to watch violent TV. 00:10:26.95\00:10:30.50 We were never designed to see pornography. 00:10:30.53\00:10:33.81 We were never designed to have bad feelings about God 00:10:33.84\00:10:37.09 or feel like He's trying to hurt us. 00:10:37.12\00:10:39.15 We were never designed to have 00:10:39.18\00:10:40.75 bad relationship with our spouse. 00:10:40.78\00:10:42.98 We were never designed to live 00:10:43.01\00:10:44.38 in this anxiety, stress filled world. 00:10:44.41\00:10:46.37 But as we do these prolonged exposures to any toxin, 00:10:46.40\00:10:50.63 it can potentially damage the brain. 00:10:50.66\00:10:52.32 And we're just now learning about 00:10:52.35\00:10:53.77 how the prefrontal cortex interacts with the medulla 00:10:53.80\00:10:57.42 and all these other parts of the brain. 00:10:57.45\00:10:59.37 We know there's a problem 00:10:59.40\00:11:00.77 because we see mental health becoming a greater problem. 00:11:00.80\00:11:03.81 We see people's ability to change especially, 00:11:03.84\00:11:06.18 for things like cancer and heart disease. 00:11:06.21\00:11:07.61 It's hard to change. 00:11:07.64\00:11:09.01 We've also seen elevated rates of Alzheimer's disease 00:11:09.04\00:11:11.68 and other mental health disease. 00:11:11.71\00:11:13.32 So eventually we have to think about 00:11:13.35\00:11:15.35 what gives us the power to change our brain 00:11:15.38\00:11:18.08 because as you were pointing off of the camera 00:11:18.11\00:11:20.24 we have to do two things at once. Yes. 00:11:20.27\00:11:22.47 And we have to really treat the mind 00:11:22.50\00:11:24.56 and get a healthy relationship with God as well as 00:11:24.59\00:11:27.42 we have to treat the body because the mind 00:11:27.45\00:11:29.11 and the body really cannot be separated. Right. 00:11:29.14\00:11:31.96 And that's why we like at Heartwise 00:11:31.99\00:11:33.85 to also bring into this relationship with God, 00:11:33.88\00:11:36.52 help that to develop as a treatment, 00:11:36.55\00:11:38.45 you know, getting with the great Physician. 00:11:38.48\00:11:40.41 So we can understand that it's important to do these things 00:11:40.44\00:11:43.22 and also gives us the power to make 00:11:43.25\00:11:44.62 some changes one at a time 00:11:44.65\00:11:46.17 and have a healthy relationship with God. 00:11:46.20\00:11:48.48 Unfortunately, some people do not have 00:11:48.51\00:11:50.35 a healthy relationship with God. 00:11:50.38\00:11:52.01 Someone has a relationship with God 00:11:52.04\00:11:53.63 the way someone else tells him it should be. Yes. 00:11:53.66\00:11:56.01 And sometimes that prolonged 00:11:56.04\00:11:57.78 negative exposure can hurt a body too. 00:11:57.81\00:12:00.31 And also hurts our ability 00:12:00.34\00:12:01.94 since the mind controls the whole body to heal ourselves. 00:12:01.97\00:12:05.10 Because the mind and body, 00:12:05.13\00:12:06.50 especially, in all these cases of cancer 00:12:06.53\00:12:08.71 which everyone's scared, they go together. 00:12:08.74\00:12:11.67 That is such an important lesson there 00:12:11.70\00:12:13.36 that as we move toward that optimum health 00:12:13.39\00:12:16.62 that we want so much, we work on the two tracks, 00:12:16.65\00:12:20.31 getting to know God, bringing His power into our lives, 00:12:20.34\00:12:24.28 at the same time learning to live the way 00:12:24.31\00:12:27.29 God intended for us to live. 00:12:27.32\00:12:28.69 We need to work on both these simultaneously. 00:12:28.72\00:12:30.79 And they feed off each other. 00:12:30.82\00:12:32.19 God gives you the power to make the right choices. 00:12:32.22\00:12:34.65 The right choices gives your brain 00:12:34.68\00:12:36.10 the power to understand God better. 00:12:36.13\00:12:37.65 God gives you the power to make the right choices. 00:12:37.68\00:12:39.35 The right choices give you 00:12:39.38\00:12:40.75 the brain power to understand God better. 00:12:40.78\00:12:42.45 Around and around and it is a wonderful upward spiral. 00:12:42.48\00:12:45.66 It'd be nice for a doctor to see 00:12:45.69\00:12:47.07 upward spiral once in a while, wouldn't it? 00:12:47.10\00:12:48.94 And how would you like that relationship 00:12:48.97\00:12:51.59 as a treatment as well as a way to prevent disease. 00:12:51.62\00:12:54.47 You wouldn't want to write 00:12:54.50\00:12:55.87 a prescription for that, would you? 00:12:55.90\00:12:57.27 Get to know God better. 00:12:57.30\00:12:58.67 Healthy relationship, absolutely. Wow, wow. 00:12:58.70\00:13:00.89 We'll take a short break here. 00:13:00.92\00:13:02.29 When we come back, we'll answer your questions 00:13:02.32\00:13:03.69 on this topic of cancer and how we can prevent it 00:13:03.72\00:13:07.13 and how it can be treated on our return. 00:13:07.16\00:13:09.23 So stay right where you are. 00:13:09.26\00:13:10.64
