Welcome back to the program, I'm Charles Mills 00:00:01.40\00:00:03.31 We're here with Dr. James Marcum, cardiologist 00:00:03.34\00:00:05.67 And we're talking about sleep apnea today. 00:00:05.70\00:00:08.08 Sleep is important to us; 00:00:08.11\00:00:10.15 it's VITALLY important - as-a-matter-of-fact 00:00:10.18\00:00:12.36 It delivers for 8 hours or 7 hours... 00:00:12.39\00:00:15.41 OXYGEN while the body heals itself, 00:00:15.44\00:00:18.08 and it does all kinds of work there, 00:00:18.11\00:00:19.48 and if you don't have that oxygen during those 00:00:19.51\00:00:21.34 sleeping hours, you can have all kinds of medical problems 00:00:21.37\00:00:24.57 as Dr. Marcum has been saying. 00:00:24.60\00:00:26.01 And, the lack of oxygen? can be deadly... 00:00:26.04\00:00:30.50 And so sleep apnea is actually one of the causes of DEATH 00:00:30.53\00:00:34.07 around the world and we're talking about the causes 00:00:34.10\00:00:36.14 of death in this series. 00:00:36.17\00:00:37.54 Dr. Marcum, a question here from 00:00:37.57\00:00:39.85 the heartwiseministries. org website... 00:00:39.88\00:00:41.91 This person apparently has sleep apnea and says, 00:00:41.94\00:00:44.97 "I cannot STAND wearing my CPAP mask... I don't want to wear it" 00:00:45.00\00:00:50.43 "What are the options?" 00:00:50.46\00:00:51.83 Well, you know, that's something I hear very often. 00:00:51.86\00:00:55.67 And, this is an Ambu bag and if a person is in the field, 00:00:55.70\00:01:00.12 not breathing, and we place this over the mask 00:01:00.15\00:01:03.06 and squeeze air into that in the face, 00:01:03.09\00:01:04.54 it BLOWS air into their airway. 00:01:04.57\00:01:06.99 And, of course, the responder will keep the airway open 00:01:07.02\00:01:09.57 so the air will go in and out. 00:01:09.60\00:01:11.38 Well sometimes... I'm not going to do this to you, 00:01:11.41\00:01:13.49 but you can see if this was on you, 00:01:13.52\00:01:16.08 blowing air in and out, over and over, at night, 00:01:16.11\00:01:21.12 that would not be comfortable. 00:01:21.15\00:01:23.08 And some of the sleep masks 00:01:23.11\00:01:25.04 are a little bit similar to that sensation. 00:01:25.07\00:01:27.27 Now they've improved over time. 00:01:27.30\00:01:29.70 Well, they blow air in you and most people 00:01:29.73\00:01:33.30 say it's not comfortable, so they have to try 00:01:33.33\00:01:35.56 different things. 00:01:35.59\00:01:36.96 So if a person has sleep apnea, 00:01:36.99\00:01:39.26 and they can't tolerate the mask for whatever reason, 00:01:39.29\00:01:42.28 their options are to fix the cause 00:01:42.31\00:01:45.01 of the sleep apnea. 00:01:45.04\00:01:46.41 And if it's losing weight, try to lose the weight. 00:01:46.44\00:01:49.40 If it's an obstruction in the airway, 00:01:49.43\00:01:51.28 sometimes there is some surgery that can help with that. 00:01:51.31\00:01:54.32 If it's a central problem, sometimes the sleep apnea 00:01:54.35\00:01:57.25 doctors can help with that as well. 00:01:57.28\00:01:59.42 But if they can't wear the oxygen, 00:01:59.45\00:02:01.44 they really have to take care of their body, 00:02:01.47\00:02:03.27 get the weight off, do well. 00:02:03.30\00:02:04.98 And luckily, they're always developing new types of 00:02:05.01\00:02:07.88 sleep masks and sleep aids that help. 00:02:07.91\00:02:10.05 Some people can get by with some type of devices 00:02:10.08\00:02:13.23 that reposition their tongue, 00:02:13.26\00:02:14.87 and they can sleep well at night. 00:02:14.90\00:02:16.27 Some people have some devices where they 00:02:16.30\00:02:17.67 move their head around. 00:02:17.70\00:02:19.07 Well this is still devices - you're sleeping with 00:02:19.10\00:02:20.71 a device on your face. Yeah 00:02:20.74\00:02:22.30 And so it's always best, if it's caused by extra weight, 00:02:22.33\00:02:25.58 to get the weight off. 00:02:25.61\00:02:26.98 Now I wanted to review here... 00:02:27.01\00:02:28.60 If one of our viewers out there think they might have 00:02:28.63\00:02:31.83 sleep apnea, see if you have a symptom. 00:02:31.86\00:02:34.54 ...Headaches, funny heart rhythms, high blood pressure, 00:02:34.57\00:02:38.34 being tired all the time. 00:02:38.37\00:02:40.16 If you have one of these symptoms, 00:02:40.19\00:02:41.89 you want to find out, at a young age, 00:02:41.92\00:02:43.66 you don't want to go years and years, 00:02:43.69\00:02:45.06 and have all that damage that we talked about. 00:02:45.09\00:02:47.49 Get a sleep test done to see if you have it, 00:02:47.52\00:02:50.20 and if you do have it, some of the new devices 00:02:50.23\00:02:52.67 might help you, but it might not be a permanent thing. 00:02:52.70\00:02:54.17 It might be you can make some changes 00:02:55.05\00:02:56.73 and you don't need to wear oxygen. 00:02:56.76\00:02:58.39 Because REST, as we talked about, 00:02:58.42\00:03:00.29 is such an important treatment for the body. 00:03:00.32\00:03:03.54 ...You know, that nightly rest, that weekly rest - 00:03:03.57\00:03:06.36 We HAVE to have that! 00:03:06.39\00:03:07.76 You know, after you've stood on your feet the whole day, 00:03:07.79\00:03:10.16 you feed need rest! Absolutely 00:03:10.19\00:03:12.37 So rest is a treatment, 00:03:12.40\00:03:13.94 and I wish I could bottle up a pill-bottle, okay, 00:03:13.97\00:03:18.29 and put a rest pill in there 00:03:18.32\00:03:20.01 and you'd get the equivalent of 8 hours of sleep. 00:03:20.04\00:03:22.27 But you CAN'T do that! 00:03:22.30\00:03:23.67 That's the next question - Are sleeping pills good for you? 00:03:23.70\00:03:26.33 You would think... "Okay, I can't sleep, 00:03:26.36\00:03:27.97 a sleeping pill would help me" 00:03:28.00\00:03:29.56 There have been some studies done recently that show 00:03:29.59\00:03:32.03 that sleeping pills actually are not helpful, 00:03:32.06\00:03:34.63 and they actually can damage people, 00:03:34.66\00:03:36.16 and they actually can kill people. 00:03:36.19\00:03:37.56 Sleeping pills just knock you out, Charles... 00:03:37.59\00:03:40.09 They just like whack you on the head 00:03:40.12\00:03:41.65 and you don't sleep better. 00:03:41.68\00:03:43.05 And you wake up - you might have some cognitive defects, 00:03:43.08\00:03:47.13 and remember... the sleep pills 00:03:47.16\00:03:48.60 were NEVER approved to take long-term. 00:03:48.63\00:03:51.59 They were only approved to do short-term sleep. 00:03:51.62\00:03:54.66 So if you take them long-term, 00:03:54.69\00:03:56.85 there are some cognitive problems that happen; 00:03:56.88\00:03:58.74 there are some dependency problems that sometimes happen, 00:03:58.77\00:04:01.70 so I do not recommend people take sleep pills long-term. 00:04:01.73\00:04:05.74 I recommend them to try to find out WHY they don't sleep well. 00:04:05.77\00:04:11.04 Do you sleep well, Charles? I do, I do 00:04:11.07\00:04:13.06 The answer just keeps coming back that the 00:04:13.09\00:04:17.47 prescription is not in a bag, it's not in a pill. 00:04:17.50\00:04:20.28 There's no potion for you. 00:04:20.31\00:04:22.21 What you need to do is CHANGE your lifestyle. 00:04:22.24\00:04:26.26 Change when you eat... 00:04:26.29\00:04:27.66 In this case - don't eat late at night. 00:04:27.69\00:04:29.92 Change HOW YOU LIVE! 00:04:29.95\00:04:32.34 Because if you change how you live, most cases, 00:04:32.37\00:04:35.85 not all cases, but in most cases, 00:04:35.88\00:04:37.42 you're going to find great benefit to you 00:04:37.45\00:04:40.37 and all kinds of levels and this is one of them. 00:04:40.40\00:04:42.84 Charles, you know, I've been practicing medicine, 00:04:42.87\00:04:44.89 and I say "practicing" learning medicine" for over 20 years now 00:04:44.92\00:04:49.08 And what I've discovered is that people need to think about 00:04:49.11\00:04:52.64 these lifestyle changes and these things that 00:04:52.67\00:04:55.11 God taught us as equivalent to taking pills... 00:04:55.14\00:04:58.11 Because they change our chemistry every bit as much 00:04:58.14\00:05:01.37 and without side effects that a pill does. 00:05:01.40\00:05:04.43 So people need to learn that, 00:05:04.46\00:05:05.92 and I think, as history moves on, 00:05:05.95\00:05:07.86 they're going to look back at this stage of medical history 00:05:07.89\00:05:10.86 and say, "Listen, what were these guys doing?" 00:05:10.89\00:05:13.63 You know, they were never getting at the cause of problems 00:05:13.66\00:05:17.09 They were just giving a bunch of pills that might have 00:05:17.12\00:05:18.60 made things worse... that might might have even caused death. 00:05:18.63\00:05:21.40 I think we're going to look back in history and find out that, 00:05:21.43\00:05:23.87 you know, the successful healers were the ones that 00:05:23.90\00:05:26.86 looked to the Ultimate Prescription-the Great Physician 00:05:26.89\00:05:29.91 to get recommendations to learn that what people ate 00:05:29.94\00:05:33.63 and put in their body affected them, caused disease 00:05:33.66\00:05:36.88 as well as TREATED disease... 00:05:36.91\00:05:38.71 They are also going to learn the THOUGHTS 00:05:38.74\00:05:40.34 that we put in the brain 00:05:40.37\00:05:41.74 also treated disease as well as caused disease. 00:05:41.77\00:05:44.49 Now, one of the leading causes of people not resting well now 00:05:44.52\00:05:48.33 is TELEVISION. 00:05:48.36\00:05:50.15 We were NEVER designed for T.V. 00:05:50.18\00:05:53.55 We were designed to work out with the animals all day; 00:05:53.58\00:05:56.48 have a garden - be outside 00:05:56.51\00:05:58.15 - love each other - serve each other - be happy 00:05:58.18\00:06:01.08 - eat healthy - fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains... 00:06:01.11\00:06:03.78 That's how we were made to be! 00:06:03.81\00:06:06.17 And yet now, a lot of people watch television, 00:06:06.20\00:06:09.33 and it stimulates the stress part of the brain; 00:06:09.36\00:06:12.02 the amygdala... 00:06:12.05\00:06:13.42 That part of the brain that makes stress chemicals. 00:06:13.45\00:06:15.63 Your brain is working, and do you think you 00:06:15.66\00:06:17.68 can rest well at night? 00:06:17.71\00:06:19.08 Even if you're asleep, you don't rest well because 00:06:19.11\00:06:20.84 all those inputs are still going on, 00:06:20.87\00:06:22.51 especially if you see violent things 00:06:22.54\00:06:24.01 or things that we weren't designed. 00:06:24.04\00:06:25.77 So one of the things that helps people, 00:06:25.80\00:06:27.40 that I found sleep better and rest better, 00:06:27.43\00:06:29.74 is take television out of the formula. 00:06:29.77\00:06:32.54 They start resting better, they sleep better. 00:06:32.57\00:06:35.29 Another thing that I remove is the BIG meal at night. 00:06:35.32\00:06:38.06 Over 90% of people take stimulants every day, 00:06:38.09\00:06:41.77 and the stimulant that we most often see is caffeine... 00:06:41.80\00:06:44.61 And that revs people up and that disrupts 00:06:44.64\00:06:47.05 sleep patterns as well. 00:06:47.08\00:06:48.50 Some people don't exercise. 00:06:48.53\00:06:50.40 Remember... you sleep better when you're tired! 00:06:50.43\00:06:53.05 You're going to probably sleep good tonight 00:06:53.08\00:06:54.65 Absolutely... Because you're going to feel good tonight... 00:06:54.68\00:06:56.76 But when people exercise and move around, 00:06:56.79\00:06:59.51 they get tired so THEY rest better at night. 00:06:59.54\00:07:01.84 So if you can teach people what causes them NOT to rest better, 00:07:01.87\00:07:05.45 maybe you can give them this good prescription of REST 00:07:05.48\00:07:08.12 that might be worth 10 prescription medications 00:07:08.15\00:07:10.73 and get at the REAL cause of the problem! 00:07:10.76\00:07:13.35 Now we need to start changing our brains, 00:07:13.38\00:07:15.78 both as people and medical professionals to see this. 00:07:15.81\00:07:19.58 Now also what I see is a lot of people out there 00:07:19.61\00:07:22.24 like to talk about technology, 00:07:22.27\00:07:24.34 and there's a place for all these fancy devices that we have 00:07:24.37\00:07:27.58 There's a place for lifestyle... that's important too, 00:07:27.61\00:07:31.50 but where do people get the power to change? 00:07:31.53\00:07:34.10 Where do people get the Ultimate Prescription 00:07:34.13\00:07:36.62 ...the ability to do these things that society 00:07:36.65\00:07:38.84 is telling them not to do? 00:07:38.87\00:07:40.35 I found, in my life, it comes from that relationship with God 00:07:40.38\00:07:43.35 He might not change me all at once, 00:07:43.38\00:07:45.07 but He gives me power to learn things one at a time, 00:07:45.10\00:07:47.64 and I gradually get my health back. 00:07:47.67\00:07:49.81 So sleep - rest very, very important! 00:07:49.84\00:07:52.51 And that's why God says, 00:07:52.54\00:07:53.91 "Remember to keep the Sabbath Day - to rest" 00:07:53.94\00:07:55.99 ...to break your routine 00:07:56.02\00:07:57.39 - to get your body - give it a chance to heal! 00:07:57.42\00:08:00.21 I like to go back in my mind to that 7th day of creation. 00:08:00.24\00:08:04.88 I invite you to do that also, 00:08:04.91\00:08:06.30 listener and watcher of this program. 00:08:06.33\00:08:08.59 Adam and Eve standing in the Garden of Eden 00:08:08.62\00:08:12.34 ...The Creator comes along and they just sort of stroll 00:08:12.37\00:08:16.49 through the garden. 00:08:16.52\00:08:17.89 The most AMAZING thing about that scene is that 00:08:17.92\00:08:20.63 EVERY THING NEEDED for their health and well-being 00:08:20.66\00:08:25.25 Every thing they needed to live FOREVER 00:08:25.28\00:08:28.23 was right there right then! 00:08:28.26\00:08:32.41 They didn't have to have drugs. 00:08:32.44\00:08:34.46 They didn't have to have television. 00:08:34.49\00:08:37.02 They didn't have to have any of the stimulants 00:08:37.05\00:08:39.89 that we have today. 00:08:39.92\00:08:41.54 Everything they needed... What did they eat? 00:08:41.57\00:08:44.59 I'll ask you... You answer this yourself... 00:08:44.62\00:08:46.93 What did they eat? What did they drink? 00:08:46.96\00:08:49.24 What did they do with their time? 00:08:49.27\00:08:51.57 How did they spend their days? 00:08:51.60\00:08:53.30 How did they spend their nights? 00:08:53.33\00:08:54.82 With whom did they communicate on a daily basis? 00:08:54.85\00:08:58.04 THAT is the OPTIMUM... right there! 00:08:58.07\00:09:01.02 And the further we take ourselves away from that image, 00:09:01.05\00:09:04.86 and from those parameters, the SICKER we get! 00:09:04.89\00:09:08.50 Isn't it interesting, Charles, that as we've talked about this 00:09:08.53\00:09:11.92 series so far, that we keep coming back to the same answers! 00:09:11.95\00:09:16.20 We keep coming back to the same themes over and over and over 00:09:16.23\00:09:19.67 no matter what the disease; 00:09:19.70\00:09:21.07 whether it be heart attacks or sleep apnea, 00:09:21.10\00:09:23.28 we all come back to these same themes, 00:09:23.31\00:09:25.98 and there is truth in this. 00:09:26.01\00:09:28.47 And we have to let people know about this 00:09:28.50\00:09:31.80 as this is the solution to their healing. 00:09:31.83\00:09:34.28 We need to spend more time in our Bibles, 00:09:34.31\00:09:37.29 and maybe a little less time at the doctor's office. 00:09:37.32\00:09:39.32 Would that be a fair statement to say? 00:09:39.35\00:09:40.89 Well hey - listen to this one Charles... 00:09:40.92\00:09:42.73 How would you like to have a doctor that you could go to 00:09:42.76\00:09:46.17 and you could go to this doctor and no forms, no paperwork, 00:09:46.20\00:09:50.54 no co-pay... you could go right in to the room with the doctor. 00:09:50.57\00:09:53.77 No appointment necessary. No 00:09:53.80\00:09:55.29 You could sit there and you could talk as 00:09:55.32\00:09:57.59 LONG as you wanted to... No interruptions 00:09:57.62\00:10:00.45 He would just listen to you hour after hour. 00:10:00.48\00:10:02.83 You could tell him everything. 00:10:02.86\00:10:04.34 Then he would maybe give you some advice. 00:10:04.37\00:10:07.15 ...To help you feel better, to help change your prescription 00:10:07.18\00:10:09.64 Then you could go outside and do whatever, 00:10:09.67\00:10:11.95 and you know what... if you got sick again, 00:10:11.98\00:10:13.60 you could come back the NEXT day, 00:10:13.63\00:10:15.04 and repeat the process all over! 00:10:15.07\00:10:17.20 We have that Ultimate Prescription. 00:10:17.23\00:10:19.69 We have that Ultimate Physician who has the answers. 00:10:19.72\00:10:23.33 And I want us as medical professionals, as people, 00:10:23.36\00:10:26.49 to acknowledge the Ultimate Physician, 00:10:26.52\00:10:29.00 that relationship with Him... 00:10:29.03\00:10:30.43 That's where the answers are! 00:10:30.46\00:10:31.95 We don't have the answers, 00:10:31.98\00:10:33.64 we just scratch the surface. 00:10:33.67\00:10:35.87 And the more we THINK we know, 00:10:35.90\00:10:37.48 the less we REALLY know! 00:10:37.51\00:10:38.99 The more I learn, the less I know. 00:10:39.02\00:10:41.12 The real truth comes from that relationship with Him. 00:10:41.15\00:10:43.54 That's the kind of physician that I want to go to 00:10:43.57\00:10:45.81 on a regular basis... and guess what? 00:10:45.84\00:10:47.37 There's no bill... no co-pay 00:10:47.40\00:10:49.62 I always get good advice. 00:10:49.65\00:10:51.25 I don't have to worry about side effects unless 00:10:51.28\00:10:53.29 I fail to listen to Someone that loves me and made me, 00:10:53.32\00:10:56.36 and then I bring the side effects on myself. 00:10:56.39\00:10:59.85 As we talk about these things, program after program, 00:10:59.88\00:11:03.31 again, we are just drawn back to that time 00:11:03.34\00:11:07.65 when Adam and Eve and the Creator 00:11:07.68\00:11:09.43 walked through the Garden... 00:11:09.46\00:11:10.83 Everything seems to just flow back to there, 00:11:10.86\00:11:15.59 and the breaking of those parameters, 00:11:15.62\00:11:18.50 God's health laws we call them, 00:11:18.53\00:11:20.62 Biblical technology - as Dr. Marcum likes to say, 00:11:20.65\00:11:24.03 as we break those health laws, 00:11:24.06\00:11:26.83 we become sicker and sicker. 00:11:26.86\00:11:28.61 As we distance ourselves from those ideals, 00:11:28.64\00:11:32.63 we become sicker and sicker... 00:11:32.66\00:11:34.03 And the GOOD NEWS is... 00:11:34.06\00:11:35.56 the GOOD NEWS is we can RETURN, 00:11:35.59\00:11:39.35 we can go BACK. 00:11:39.38\00:11:41.18 We can take our lives, our families 00:11:41.21\00:11:43.76 and take them BACK to that moment, 00:11:43.79\00:11:45.82 and look around and say... 00:11:45.85\00:11:47.22 "That's the way I want to live" 00:11:47.25\00:11:49.47 We'll take a short break and when we come back 00:11:49.50\00:11:50.89 let's TALK to that Creator!
