I don't think I do... 00:04:55.92\00:04:57.47 Do you have sleep apnea? How would I know? 00:04:57.50\00:04:59.48 What would I do if you came into the office? 00:04:59.51\00:05:00.88 First, I'd look for... Are you having heart rhythm problems? 00:05:00.91\00:05:03.15 Are you having blood pressure problems? 00:05:03.18\00:05:05.49 Are you tired all the time? 00:05:05.52\00:05:07.69 Do you have headaches? 00:05:07.72\00:05:09.10 Are you irritable? 00:05:09.13\00:05:10.91 Are you hard to get along with? 00:05:10.94\00:05:12.69 Are you having to take pick-me-ups during the day? 00:05:12.72\00:05:15.73 This might give me clues that you might have sleep apnea. 00:05:15.76\00:05:19.98 If you HAD sleep apnea and I wanted to know for sure, 00:05:20.01\00:05:22.65 the test I would test would be a sleep test. 00:05:22.68\00:05:25.37 Where you would lay down and go to sleep; 00:05:25.40\00:05:28.12 we have you hooked up to oxygen monitors, monitors, 00:05:28.15\00:05:31.00 and see if your oxygen goes down when you're asleep. 00:05:31.03\00:05:34.00 And if it does, then you HAVE SLEEP APNEA. 00:05:34.03\00:05:36.84 And the next type... you know there are 2 types of 00:05:36.87\00:05:39.22 sleep apnea; the obstructive sleep apnea - 00:05:39.25\00:05:41.33 where you can't get oxygen in and out, 00:05:41.36\00:05:42.78 and sometimes the BRAIN can cause you to quit breathing too. 00:05:42.81\00:05:46.39 So there are different treatments for that, 00:05:46.42\00:05:48.48 and they can put an oxygen mask on you and blow oxygen in you. 00:05:48.51\00:05:51.74 Now some people find that very uncomfortable. 00:05:51.77\00:05:54.59 So what I encourage people to do, 00:05:54.62\00:05:56.00 since most sleep apnea is because of an obstruction, 00:05:56.03\00:06:00.03 I encourage - Well, let's get rid of that obstruction. 00:06:00.06\00:06:02.15 We can sometimes do that by losing weight and exercise. 00:06:02.18\00:06:05.93 We can sometimes do that by moving some tissue 00:06:05.96\00:06:08.88 that might be blocking the airway. 00:06:08.91\00:06:10.86 Sometimes people can even wear a device that moves the tongue, 00:06:10.89\00:06:13.72 and it helps keep the airway open. 00:06:13.75\00:06:15.64 But it's SO important to get 00:06:15.67\00:06:18.23 sleep apnea evaluated and treated 00:06:18.26\00:06:20.16 because if you don't do it, they say you could be 00:06:20.19\00:06:22.56 losing 20 years of your life. 20 years? 00:06:22.59\00:06:25.49 Yes, and the life that you do have... it's not as abundant. 00:06:25.52\00:06:29.30 And just think of it, if you're oxygen-deprived all the time, 00:06:29.33\00:06:31.80 how are you going to function at work? 00:06:31.83\00:06:33.88 How are you going to function with your relationships? 00:06:33.91\00:06:36.22 How is the rest of your body? 00:06:36.25\00:06:37.62 So if you have sleep apnea, and this.. that.. and the other, 00:06:37.65\00:06:40.19 it gets that much worse. 00:06:40.22\00:06:42.01 Let me tell you a story... 00:06:42.04\00:06:44.39 I take care of this man, I'm not going to say his name, 00:06:44.42\00:06:47.27 let's call him "Tom" and Tom had sleep apnea. 00:06:47.30\00:06:51.96 That was really the only problem he had in his mid-30s 00:06:51.99\00:06:54.81 He didn't know he had sleep apnea. 00:06:54.84\00:06:57.30 He was tired all the time. 00:06:57.33\00:06:59.04 Because he was tired all the time, 00:06:59.07\00:07:00.44 his wife was on him like you would not believe... 00:07:00.47\00:07:02.64 thought he was lazy! 00:07:02.67\00:07:04.04 He really wasn't lazy, he just had sleep apnea. 00:07:04.07\00:07:06.48 He'd wake up in the morning and he'd have to go to the 00:07:06.51\00:07:08.63 7- Eleven and get some of these... 00:07:08.66\00:07:10.39 Have you seen these shots? 00:07:10.42\00:07:11.85 You know, they have these like energy things... Oh yes-yes 00:07:11.88\00:07:14.04 And they cost $3 or $4, and he'd spend $6 or $7 00:07:14.07\00:07:16.96 on 2 of those every day just to get going. 00:07:16.99\00:07:19.99 Well I met him because of high blood pressure, 00:07:20.02\00:07:22.25 and by the time he got to me, 00:07:22.28\00:07:23.74 not only had he had high blood pressure, 00:07:23.77\00:07:25.88 but he had this rhythm called "atrial fibrillation" 00:07:25.91\00:07:28.86 Because he didn't take good care of himself, 00:07:28.89\00:07:31.38 and he gained some weight, he had diabetes, 00:07:31.41\00:07:33.07 so they put him on a diabetes medicine, 00:07:33.10\00:07:34.74 and, of course, this made him depressed, 00:07:34.77\00:07:36.46 so he's on a medicine for depression. 00:07:36.49\00:07:38.43 Well that wasn't the HALF of it! 00:07:38.46\00:07:40.05 The depression and all this caused impotence, 00:07:40.08\00:07:42.34 so he's taking Viagra on the side. 00:07:42.37\00:07:44.93 Because when he was home at night, he would eat big; 00:07:44.96\00:07:48.55 he was on an acid medicine that would make reflux come up. 00:07:48.58\00:07:52.16 So here he's on 6 or 7 medications 00:07:52.19\00:07:54.40 with the side effects, being a young man 00:07:54.43\00:07:57.17 and in talking to things, we talked about them 00:07:57.20\00:07:59.61 and you know, I said, "You know what, 00:07:59.64\00:08:01.01 all this might be related to sleep apnea. " 00:08:01.04\00:08:04.36 "Let's see if you have sleep apnea. " 00:08:04.39\00:08:06.09 He says, "I don't want to have 00:08:06.12\00:08:07.49 the test, it's a drag - I don't want to have it" 00:08:07.52\00:08:08.98 I said, Please, we might be able to 00:08:09.01\00:08:10.39 get you off 5 or 6 medicines. " 00:08:10.43\00:08:11.80 "We might be able to prevent all these problems 00:08:11.83\00:08:13.91 that I see coming down the road. " 00:08:13.94\00:08:15.48 ..."From high blood pressure, from diabetes, 00:08:15.51\00:08:17.29 we might be able to prevent these. " 00:08:17.32\00:08:18.80 "Come on, do it... Let's do it, it's going to help us out" 00:08:18.83\00:08:21.57 So we talked to him. 00:08:21.60\00:08:22.97 I said, "I'm going to be praying for you that 00:08:23.00\00:08:24.37 God will give you the strength to at least do the test. " 00:08:24.40\00:08:26.47 Little things... 00:08:26.50\00:08:27.87 So he has the test done and guess what? 00:08:27.90\00:08:29.78 He has sleep apnea! 00:08:29.81\00:08:31.18 Some of the worst sleep apnea that the doctor had ever seen. 00:08:31.21\00:08:33.89 So we put him on the mask. 00:08:33.92\00:08:35.29 In a week or 2, he said, "I started to feel better" 00:08:35.32\00:08:37.26 So when he felt better, I said, "You know what?" 00:08:37.29\00:08:38.66 You might not have to wear this mask forever 00:08:39.22\00:08:41.08 if you lose a few pounds. " 00:08:41.11\00:08:42.52 So he said, "Well, how do I do that?" 00:08:42.55\00:08:44.35 And I said, "Well, let's start simple. " 00:08:44.38\00:08:46.52 "Let's start in a relationship 00:08:46.55\00:08:48.30 with God who is going to give you the power. " 00:08:48.33\00:08:50.06 So we did that and he said, "Yeah, I feel better, 00:08:50.09\00:08:51.68 I feel like I can do this" 00:08:51.71\00:08:53.08 I said, "Well, let's start by drinking water for a month" 00:08:53.11\00:08:55.68 So he drank ONLY water for a month... 00:08:55.71\00:08:57.28 Gave up ALL the energy drinks and everything. 00:08:57.31\00:08:59.50 Now, he withdrew a little bit, but he started to feel better. 00:08:59.53\00:09:01.91 When he stopped the energy drinks, 00:09:01.94\00:09:03.49 the rhythm and the blood pressure started to come down. 00:09:03.52\00:09:06.57 So we said we'll take another medicine off. 00:09:06.60\00:09:08.23 Then he said, "You know what, 00:09:08.26\00:09:09.63 this is really working... What can I do next?" 00:09:09.66\00:09:11.70 I said, "Well let's not eat big at night. " 00:09:11.73\00:09:13.44 "Remember, we're supposed to rest at night" 00:09:13.47\00:09:15.00 We talked about the circadian rhythms. 00:09:15.03\00:09:16.78 We supposed to rest, and how can you rest 00:09:16.81\00:09:19.10 if you have this big glob of food in you 00:09:19.13\00:09:22.04 that normally should be in a refrigerator, 00:09:22.07\00:09:23.91 that's inside of you, SPOILING in you. 00:09:23.94\00:09:26.37 And when I said... "All this meat, eggs and cheese 00:09:26.40\00:09:28.48 is spoiling in you at night, 00:09:28.51\00:09:29.88 and you're getting all the chemicals," 00:09:29.91\00:09:31.28 he could see the pictures! 00:09:31.31\00:09:32.68 So he started eating some fresh fruits and vegetables 00:09:32.71\00:09:34.41 after that at night. 00:09:34.44\00:09:35.81 So he started resting better 00:09:35.84\00:09:37.55 at night... the sleep apnea got better. 00:09:37.58\00:09:39.04 The next thing, he had enough energy 00:09:39.07\00:09:40.50 to actually start walking on a regular basis. 00:09:40.53\00:09:42.26 So he started a walking program. 00:09:42.29\00:09:43.98 Now this took over a year, 00:09:44.01\00:09:45.83 but after a year he lost 50 pounds; 00:09:45.86\00:09:47.95 his diabetes went away; 00:09:47.98\00:09:49.79 he quit eating big at night, 00:09:49.82\00:09:51.21 so he didn't have the sleep sleep apnea, 00:09:51.24\00:09:52.67 and guess what happened? 00:09:52.70\00:09:54.07 His depression went away real quick, 00:09:54.10\00:09:55.47 so he got off the antidepressant; 00:09:55.50\00:09:57.43 his blood pressure got improved right away, 00:09:57.46\00:09:59.56 and so did his rhythm, 00:09:59.59\00:10:00.96 and we tested him to see if he had sleep apnea... 00:10:00.99\00:10:03.62 And one year after making these changes, 00:10:03.65\00:10:05.32 he didn't have sleep apnea at ALL. 00:10:05.35\00:10:07.20 And all the symptoms, and all these downhill things 00:10:07.23\00:10:09.96 HAPPENED because we didn't get at the cause, 00:10:09.99\00:10:13.12 and the cause was sleep apnea, 00:10:13.15\00:10:14.59 which, on him, was caused by extra weight. 00:10:14.62\00:10:17.34 So if you think about the world... we're getting heavier! 00:10:17.37\00:10:20.76 And as we get heavier, we're going to have 00:10:20.79\00:10:22.39 more tissue around our neck; 00:10:22.42\00:10:23.81 we're going to have more problems with sleep apnea. 00:10:23.84\00:10:26.80 So one of the REAL treatments for sleep apnea 00:10:26.83\00:10:29.02 is to keep the weight down on all of us. 00:10:29.05\00:10:31.12 So this was just a sort of a remarkable story 00:10:31.15\00:10:33.45 about how important sleep apnea is, 00:10:33.48\00:10:35.50 and the chronic long-term consequences if we don't 00:10:35.53\00:10:38.26 deal with the cause of the problem. 00:10:38.29\00:10:39.78 A beautiful illustration of that domino effect 00:10:39.81\00:10:43.18 where you have one problem, 00:10:43.21\00:10:44.86 so you take a medicine that leads to another problem, 00:10:44.89\00:10:47.50 and then that develops another problem, 00:10:47.53\00:10:48.90 and on and on and on you go! 00:10:48.93\00:10:50.31 It's like a cycle, you're just heading down-down-down. 00:10:50.34\00:10:53.22 Sleep apnea...
