Yes, it's Smoking Sam! 00:02:10.53\00:02:12.16 The programs used to be everywhere, 00:02:12.20\00:02:13.80 and then all of a sudden, it dropped off a little bit, 00:02:13.83\00:02:16.32 but we still see, in our death rates, 00:02:16.35\00:02:19.09 chronic obstructive pulmonary disease 00:02:19.12\00:02:20.52 still being up there... 00:02:20.55\00:02:22.24 And that's because the generations that smoke 00:02:22.27\00:02:24.30 are getting older now; 00:02:24.33\00:02:25.78 they're having more chronic obstructive pulmonary disease 00:02:25.81\00:02:28.26 which is where the air cannot move in and out well; 00:02:28.29\00:02:30.89 the alveoli are damaged; 00:02:30.92\00:02:32.79 they get real short of breath; 00:02:32.82\00:02:34.59 their cilia doesn't pull mucus out of their body 00:02:34.63\00:02:38.08 because they are paralyzed, 00:02:38.12\00:02:39.49 so they are more prone to having infections. 00:02:39.52\00:02:42.70 They are also more prone to having cancer... 00:02:42.73\00:02:45.06 But we use do hear a LOT about that, 00:02:45.09\00:02:46.64 but we're not hearing as much, but we NEED to... 00:02:46.67\00:02:49.06 because a recent article last week said, 00:02:49.09\00:02:51.30 "Our teenagers are still smoking cigarettes. " 00:02:51.33\00:02:54.85 It's still something that's very popular. 00:02:54.88\00:02:57.03 And years ago, when cigarettes first started, 00:02:57.06\00:02:59.95 that was the cool thing to do! 00:02:59.98\00:03:01.58 And then people have been wrapping tobacco 00:03:01.62\00:03:03.31 for years and years and years... 00:03:03.35\00:03:05.13 And yet the substances in those cigarettes 00:03:05.17\00:03:07.88 damage our upper airways. 00:03:07.91\00:03:10.30 It damages our cilia; it damages our taste bud, 00:03:10.33\00:03:13.68 it damages our alveoli. 00:03:13.71\00:03:15.70 The chemicals in cigarettes, nicotine, also damages 00:03:15.73\00:03:19.79 our blood vessels; 00:03:19.82\00:03:21.19 also makes us more prone to heart attacks; 00:03:21.22\00:03:23.38 more prone to high blood pressure; 00:03:23.41\00:03:25.20 more prone to cancer and more prone to death 00:03:25.23\00:03:28.13 because of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. 00:03:28.16\00:03:30.08 ...And that's one of the worse deaths you can imagine, Charles! 00:03:30.11\00:03:33.59 I have some people that they just CANNOT quit smoking. 00:03:33.62\00:03:36.70 I remember this little old lady... 00:03:36.73\00:03:38.52 She looked like she was 80, but she was really 55. 00:03:38.55\00:03:42.09 Because smoking causes you to be wrinkled, 00:03:42.12\00:03:44.13 makes you look a lot older. 00:03:44.16\00:03:45.83 And she couldn't quit smoking. 00:03:45.86\00:03:47.23 Well what happened is her lungs became damaged. 00:03:47.26\00:03:49.24 The alveoli got bigger and bigger. 00:03:49.27\00:03:51.19 She was more prone to infection. 00:03:51.22\00:03:52.72 She was short of breath ALL the time, 00:03:52.75\00:03:54.44 yet she continued to have those cigarettes. 00:03:54.47\00:03:56.85 Well, I remember putting her on a ventilator AGAIN. 00:03:56.88\00:03:59.94 Finally got off the ventilator and we had to trach her 00:03:59.97\00:04:02.58 so she could get air in and after that 00:04:02.61\00:04:04.81 she would smoke cigarettes through her tracheostomy. OH MY! 00:04:04.84\00:04:08.28 That's how powerful this habit is. 00:04:08.31\00:04:10.95 And what we want to know is... 00:04:10.98\00:04:12.35 we want to talk a little bit about this disease, 00:04:12.38\00:04:14.34 and also let people know there is hope, there is help. 00:04:14.37\00:04:17.32 We don't want this disease to take you away, 00:04:17.35\00:04:19.66 and if you might be especially a young person 00:04:19.69\00:04:21.88 that's thinking about smoking cigarettes, 00:04:21.91\00:04:24.14 we hope you never do that... 00:04:24.17\00:04:25.54 there is no real reason to smoke cigarettes. 00:04:25.57\00:04:27.80 I can't think of any good reason that you can't 00:04:27.83\00:04:29.71 substitute something else for it. 00:04:29.74\00:04:31.52 Yeah, in other words... There is no BENEFIT other than 00:04:31.55\00:04:33.85 you think you look cool. 00:04:33.88\00:04:35.25 It's almost a mental benefit. 00:04:35.28\00:04:37.65 Now people will smoke cigarettes, I understand, 00:04:37.68\00:04:39.90 to make them feel calmer... 00:04:39.93\00:04:41.93 How does it do that? 00:04:41.96\00:04:44.56 Well, you know, the cigarettes have hundreds and hundreds 00:04:44.59\00:04:48.75 of chemicals in the body... 00:04:48.78\00:04:50.15 You hear about tar and nicotine, 00:04:50.18\00:04:52.21 but when something is lighted, 00:04:52.24\00:04:55.77 and all these fluorocarbons get in us, 00:04:55.80\00:04:57.56 it makes a lot of other chemicals. 00:04:57.59\00:04:59.37 But yeah, some of these chemicals, they say... 00:04:59.40\00:05:01.41 make a person feel calmer, but you know what... 00:05:01.44\00:05:03.98 they might feel calmer in the brain, 00:05:04.01\00:05:06.13 but the rest of the blood vessels, the rest of the body 00:05:06.16\00:05:08.60 is anything BUT calm. 00:05:08.63\00:05:10.28 It's crying out... "Nicotine is constricting 00:05:10.31\00:05:12.80 my blood vessels - it's causing heart attacks" 00:05:12.83\00:05:15.18 And when they get older, the people can't breathe. 00:05:15.21\00:05:17.32 When you see someone that has smoked their whole lives, 00:05:17.35\00:05:19.48 and you say... "Would you do this again?" 00:05:19.51\00:05:23.30 They say... "No, if I could go back, I would have never 00:05:23.33\00:05:25.73 had that first cigarette behind the barn with my buddies 00:05:25.76\00:05:29.69 when I smoked several. " 00:05:29.72\00:05:31.09 Now, our society all around the world, we're doing better. 00:05:31.12\00:05:34.62 There are areas where you can't smoke. 00:05:34.65\00:05:36.84 At first, they used to be able to smoke in the hospitals! 00:05:36.87\00:05:39.52 Can you believe that? Yes 00:05:39.55\00:05:40.92 And people, for a while, could smoke in restaurants, 00:05:40.95\00:05:43.47 and now that's not the case. 00:05:43.50\00:05:46.23 But we still see a lot of people smoking cigarettes, 00:05:46.26\00:05:48.92 and did you know, Charles, if you live with a smoker, 00:05:48.95\00:05:51.27 you get secondhand smoke. 00:05:51.30\00:05:53.32 And if I smoke 2 packs-a-day and live with you, 00:05:53.35\00:05:56.14 you're going to get a pack a day! 00:05:56.17\00:05:57.85 And that's still damaging your body in many, many ways. 00:05:57.88\00:06:01.31 So sooner or later, all these chemicals damages the lungs, 00:06:01.34\00:06:05.76 and unfortunately, we have some inhalers that help with that. 00:06:05.79\00:06:09.13 We have oxygen... but the real solution to 00:06:09.19\00:06:11.78 chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is to get a person 00:06:11.81\00:06:15.10 to quit smoking the cigarettes. 00:06:15.13\00:06:17.18 Now let me bring up a common complaint of people who 00:06:17.21\00:06:21.80 are trying to stop smoking. 00:06:21.83\00:06:23.54 They say, "If I stop smoking my cigarette, 00:06:23.57\00:06:25.76 I'm going to gain weight; I'm going to become fat" 00:06:25.79\00:06:28.42 "Cigarettes are keeping me slender" 00:06:28.45\00:06:30.24 Is this TRUE? 00:06:30.27\00:06:31.70 Well, you know, when they're smoking, 00:06:31.73\00:06:33.35 they're usually not eating. All right 00:06:33.38\00:06:36.06 Well they can't TASTE their food! 00:06:36.09\00:06:38.02 It damages their taste bud - it doesn't taste as good. 00:06:38.05\00:06:40.64 And nicotine is a STIMULANT! 00:06:40.67\00:06:43.34 So it does speed up the body. 00:06:43.37\00:06:45.68 So, yes, that is because most people will gain weight 00:06:45.71\00:06:48.61 if they eat more. 00:06:48.64\00:06:50.01 And, you know, through the years... 00:06:50.04\00:06:51.41 But they recognize food... this tastes pretty good, 00:06:51.44\00:06:53.98 I want to eat more... Okay, I can see where that would happen. 00:06:54.01\00:06:55.81 But you know what, Charles, I think, in the smokers, 00:06:55.84\00:06:59.22 they know it's not good for them. 00:06:59.25\00:07:00.89 They know that this is not the best thing to do... 00:07:00.92\00:07:04.73 and they know it and what we need to do find new ways 00:07:04.76\00:07:07.68 to help them do better. 00:07:07.71\00:07:09.39 And we can tell, by looking at the young people smoking, 00:07:09.42\00:07:12.21 that we haven't got through to everybody 00:07:12.24\00:07:13.87 because people are still smoking now. 00:07:13.90\00:07:15.86 Now sometimes, the government can tax more cigarettes, 00:07:15.89\00:07:19.19 raise the price of it and that helps some... 00:07:19.22\00:07:21.41 Makes it more expensive. 00:07:21.44\00:07:23.40 We've had different drugs through the years, 00:07:23.43\00:07:25.58 but it never made sense to me where you trade one drug 00:07:25.61\00:07:28.42 and its side effects for another one. 00:07:28.45\00:07:30.46 One of the drugs they use causes seizures, 00:07:30.49\00:07:33.04 and one they use - depression. 00:07:33.07\00:07:34.44 Another thing that didn't make sense was the nicotine gum! 00:07:34.47\00:07:38.52 Instead of inhaling it, you're chewing it! 00:07:38.55\00:07:42.77 Then they had the patches... 00:07:42.80\00:07:44.17 And I had one fellow that came in... 00:07:44.20\00:07:45.88 He had a heart attack because of a spasm. 00:07:45.91\00:07:48.02 Nicotine causes spasms. 00:07:48.05\00:07:49.70 Well he wore the patch which he got some nicotine buzz on that, 00:07:49.73\00:07:54.51 but then he smoked too! 00:07:54.54\00:07:55.99 So I mean it was like taking a double whammy. 00:07:56.02\00:07:59.41 So you talk about medications that can kill you... 00:07:59.44\00:08:01.88 Well, you take a nicotine patch and you continue to smoke... 00:08:01.91\00:08:04.64 and you have vasospasms, it precipitated his heart attack 00:08:04.67\00:08:08.49 But it's a major issue in America; 00:08:08.52\00:08:10.90 it's damaging lungs; it's one of the leading 00:08:10.93\00:08:13.64 causes of lung cancer. 00:08:13.68\00:08:15.31 Cancer throughout the body is triggered by 00:08:15.34\00:08:17.81 these chemicals that we get. 00:08:17.84\00:08:19.69 It turns on these cancer genes in our body, 00:08:19.72\00:08:22.20 and the ways out there are not working, 00:08:22.23\00:08:24.50 so we want to talk a little bit today about ways that will work 00:08:24.53\00:08:29.32 and what I do with my smoker to help them quit smoking. 00:08:29.35\00:08:32.65 It almost sounds like we're not necessarily dealing with 00:08:32.68\00:08:36.96 a tobacco problem... we're dealing with a habit. 00:08:36.99\00:08:39.60 We're dealing with something that they are just hooked on 00:08:39.63\00:08:43.09 and they can't get off. 00:08:43.12\00:08:44.49 It's an addiction and it changes the chemistry of the brain. 00:08:44.52\00:08:47.64 The brain says, "I have to have this, if I don't have this" 00:08:47.67\00:08:50.87 ...They say it's the most addictive substance 00:08:50.91\00:08:52.83 that's known to man - is nicotine and cigarettes. 00:08:52.86\00:08:55.67 The devil does a pretty good job when he comes up with 00:08:55.70\00:08:58.34 ways of trapping us because when we smoke, 00:08:58.37\00:09:02.79 and when we affect our brain and our chemistry like that, 00:09:02.82\00:09:05.83 we really can't fully comprehend God's presence in our lives... 00:09:05.86\00:09:09.67 We really can't fully see His leading. 00:09:09.70\00:09:12.39 We don't have that emotional connection that's so important 00:09:12.42\00:09:15.40 that God wants to have with us. 00:09:15.43\00:09:17.31 So the devil has made this WEED that can come between us and God 00:09:17.34\00:09:23.00 and he doesn't care if we're sick or if we DIE. 00:09:23.03\00:09:25.24 He just wants to make sure that we are sick and die 00:09:25.27\00:09:27.69 without GOD in our lives. 00:09:27.72\00:09:29.14 Right, and that's excellent how our mind changes... Yes 00:09:29.17\00:09:34.35 And when the chemistry of our mind changes, 00:09:34.38\00:09:36.05 no matter what the addiction is, 00:09:36.08\00:09:37.61 whether it be alcohol, 00:09:37.64\00:09:39.18 whether it be addictions to cigarettes, 00:09:39.21\00:09:41.64 to drugs, painkillers; we see addictions to that. 00:09:41.67\00:09:44.34 We see addictions to things like cocaine, methamphetamines. 00:09:44.37\00:09:48.01 Some people are addicted to things that don't seem so bad 00:09:48.04\00:09:50.71 like food... television! 00:09:50.74\00:09:53.36 Anything that can addict us, can pull us away from that 00:09:53.39\00:09:55.92 relationship and that relationship is the true path 00:09:55.95\00:09:59.63 to getting someone to quit smoking cigarettes. 00:09:59.66\00:10:03.09 The people I've talked to on this topic of addiction, 00:10:03.12\00:10:05.98 they seem to be quite universal in saying... 00:10:06.01\00:10:08.17 "The way that you overcome an addiction is to transfer 00:10:08.20\00:10:12.66 your desires to something else" Right 00:10:12.69\00:10:15.52 If you have a cigarette addiction, 00:10:15.55\00:10:17.34 what are some of the transfers that we can make 00:10:17.37\00:10:19.31 that seem to work for your patients. 00:10:19.34\00:10:20.85 Well, when a patient comes in to me, 00:10:20.88\00:10:22.46 the first thing I do is I tell them... 00:10:22.49\00:10:24.48 "Listen, I love you, and because I love you, 00:10:24.51\00:10:27.71 I want to help you quit smoking. " 00:10:27.74\00:10:30.10 And for some people, it happens just like that! 00:10:30.13\00:10:32.82 For some people, most people, 00:10:32.85\00:10:34.68 it's more of a journey to quit smoking. 00:10:34.71\00:10:37.14 But I'd say, in my patients, there's about a 90% quit rate. 00:10:37.17\00:10:40.82 And it's nothing special; I've learned from some of the 00:10:40.85\00:10:44.65 programs I've worked with in the past.. 00:10:44.68\00:10:46.05 I come in and first I say, "I love you," 00:10:46.08\00:10:47.51 "I want you to quit smoking" 00:10:47.54\00:10:49.08 and I try to educate them about the cigarettes. 00:10:49.11\00:10:51.68 I say, "You know, the money you can save, you can take a trip... 00:10:51.71\00:10:54.18 A trip to Hawaii on the money you spend on 00:10:54.22\00:10:56.05 cigarettes every month! I tell them... 00:10:56.09\00:10:57.72 "Do you want to have another heart attack?" 00:10:57.75\00:10:59.12 "Do you want to put your relatives 00:10:59.15\00:11:00.52 through this; do you want to put your children?" 00:11:00.55\00:11:01.92 So after we're done educating, the first thing I say is... 00:11:01.95\00:11:03.68 "Listen, let's just start with one thing 00:11:03.72\00:11:05.93 to help you quit smoking. " 00:11:05.97\00:11:07.34 I'm going to pray for you for one month, 00:11:07.37\00:11:09.84 and we'll come back next month. 00:11:09.87\00:11:11.36 So we come back next month after I've prayed for them, 00:11:11.39\00:11:14.22 and the second thing I say is, 00:11:14.25\00:11:15.62 "Listen, I want you to enter into a relationship 00:11:15.65\00:11:17.49 with the One that can help us break not only this addiction 00:11:17.52\00:11:20.05 but any addiction and if you can do this, 00:11:20.08\00:11:22.13 there's nothing in your life you cannot overcome. 00:11:22.16\00:11:26.40 I let them know I'm praying for them-I'm really pulling for them 00:11:27.15\00:11:29.25 And they're not a BAD person because they smoke. 00:11:29.29\00:11:31.36 You're still loved by God. 00:11:31.39\00:11:33.01 You're still very important. 00:11:33.04\00:11:34.62 So the next step I do is having them 00:11:34.65\00:11:37.21 have that relationship. 00:11:37.24\00:11:38.61 And I say, "You stick to it" 00:11:38.64\00:11:40.06 And they have to have some accountability! 00:11:40.09\00:11:41.95 Right down a text every day that you read. 00:11:41.98\00:11:44.22 Go over something every single day. 00:11:44.25\00:11:46.55 A friend of mine wrote a book called... "BreathWish" 00:11:46.58\00:11:49.75 which helps people quit smoking 00:11:49.78\00:11:51.15 and gives them texts everywhere. 00:11:51.18\00:11:52.59 His name is "Craig Ammerall" 00:11:52.62\00:11:53.99 I give them that book. 00:11:54.02\00:11:55.39 So they do that for a month... and I don't tell them to quit 00:11:55.42\00:11:57.00 Some people, even after just doing that, 00:11:57.71\00:11:59.26 they've overcome their habit... Some people have not 00:11:59.29\00:12:02.39 Then the next thing I say is... 00:12:02.42\00:12:03.79 "Listen, let's cut down the amount of 00:12:03.82\00:12:06.05 cigarettes you're smoking" 00:12:06.08\00:12:07.45 and pick a quit date. " 00:12:07.48\00:12:08.85 "And when you quit on that day, have a substitute. " 00:12:08.88\00:12:12.70 Now they're already in a relationship... 00:12:12.73\00:12:14.31 They already have people praying for them. 00:12:14.34\00:12:15.89 And I say, "Replace a good habit with a bad habit. " 00:12:15.92\00:12:19.05 And then, if you start smoking again in 3-4 days, 00:12:19.08\00:12:22.25 figure out what was it that triggered it. 00:12:22.28\00:12:24.22 What was it... was it a friend that did it? 00:12:24.25\00:12:26.32 Were you bored... you needed something in your hand? 00:12:26.35\00:12:28.17 And substitute... every time you start smoking again 00:12:28.20\00:12:30.67 have a substitute. 00:12:30.70\00:12:32.07 Like if you need something in your hand, 00:12:32.10\00:12:33.47 put something in your hand to twirl. 00:12:33.50\00:12:34.87 If you need something in your mouth, chew a piece of gum. 00:12:34.90\00:12:37.64 If you need to do something else, go for a walk... 00:12:37.67\00:12:39.69 so your body automatically, whenever you have that... 00:12:39.72\00:12:41.84 In it's craving, you have something to add to it, 00:12:41.87\00:12:44.34 and drink lots of water. 00:12:44.37\00:12:45.82 And then if you fail, don't give up. 00:12:45.85\00:12:48.13 Turn to the Ultimate Physician and say... 00:12:48.16\00:12:50.38 "God, I didn't do it this time, help me again" 00:12:50.41\00:12:54.23 Now, when people change, 00:12:54.26\00:12:55.93 people can't change just because they want to do it. 00:12:55.96\00:12:58.12 Because when they do that, they're becoming selfish, 00:12:58.15\00:13:00.48 and the chemistry of selfishness is not good either. 00:13:00.51\00:13:03.15 So I'd say it really takes the power of the 00:13:03.18\00:13:05.25 Holy Spirit in a life to make a change for the right reason. 00:13:05.28\00:13:09.59 And when this happens and they 00:13:09.62\00:13:11.11 start realizing that people love them... 00:13:11.14\00:13:12.59 and it might be a journey... 00:13:12.62\00:13:13.99 They might stop smoking 6 or 7 times 00:13:14.02\00:13:15.73 before they are finally able to kick the habit. 00:13:15.76\00:13:18.08 When they do that, they find such joy and relief; 00:13:18.11\00:13:21.36 almost all the programs that are out there 00:13:21.39\00:13:24.18 have this sort of message, you know, 00:13:24.21\00:13:25.73 they point to a higher power. 00:13:25.76\00:13:27.42 They point to substituting a good habit for a bad habit; 00:13:27.45\00:13:30.30 they talk about education; 00:13:30.33\00:13:32.22 water to flush out the system... 00:13:32.25\00:13:34.19 And in doing this, not only do you help teach them 00:13:34.22\00:13:37.37 how to break this addiction, 00:13:37.40\00:13:38.77 but you help them to have other power in their life... 00:13:38.80\00:13:41.04 And they really get that power from the Holy Spirit 00:13:41.07\00:13:43.23 taking away that habit that they don't want to have... 00:13:43.26\00:13:46.10 And this will work for any habit that we have. 00:13:46.13\00:13:48.27 If we go to God and say, "God please help us" 00:13:48.30\00:13:50.95 Now the worst thing I can see is people that give up... 00:13:50.99\00:13:53.26 "Oh, I can't do it... I quit for 2 days, then I started again" 00:13:53.29\00:13:56.20 Well this is a journey... 00:13:56.23\00:13:57.60 Figure out - well what caused you to start the habit again. 00:13:57.63\00:14:00.12 And ask the Holy Spirit to come into your life even more 00:14:00.15\00:14:02.72 and give you more power, more help, more substitutions 00:14:02.75\00:14:05.76 ...figure out what works for you. 00:14:05.79\00:14:07.16 And what I've noticed... 00:14:07.19\00:14:08.56 that one plan does not fit all, Charles. 00:14:08.59\00:14:11.11 Yes and that's important for us to know... 00:14:11.14\00:14:12.97 If it doesn't work for you, 00:14:13.00\00:14:14.68 Don't give us, look for another plan. 00:14:14.71\00:14:16.28 I hear you saying... Right All right 00:14:16.31\00:14:17.95 We'll take a short break and when we come back 00:14:17.98\00:14:19.71 we'll answer questions on this topic from the 00:14:19.74\00:14:21.60 heartwiseministries. org website, 00:14:21.64\00:14:23.45 so stay right where you are. 00:14:23.49\00:14:25.50
