Life is tough enough, 00:00:17.41\00:00:19.13 so why do so many of us insist on adding pressure 00:00:19.16\00:00:22.36 not only to our daily existence, 00:00:22.39\00:00:23.96 but to our arteries? Stay tuned... 00:00:23.99\00:00:27.73 I'm Dr. James Marcum 00:00:27.76\00:00:29.67 Are you interested in discovering the reason why? 00:00:29.70\00:00:33.16 Do you want solutions to your health care problems? 00:00:33.19\00:00:35.79 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:00:35.82\00:00:38.78 Well, you're about to be given the "Ultimate Prescription" 00:00:38.81\00:00:42.92 Today, we continue our in-depth look at what's killing us. 00:00:42.95\00:00:45.72 HYPERTENSION is deadly, 00:00:45.75\00:00:47.35 but there's GOOD news for us all. 00:00:47.38\00:00:49.40 Hypertension isn't mandatory, it's optional. 00:00:49.43\00:00:53.41 Medical scientists tell us that there are things 00:00:53.44\00:00:55.64 we can do to mitigate the problem, 00:00:55.67\00:00:57.04 but it may require some radical changes in our behavior. 00:00:57.07\00:01:01.07 Dr. Marcum, how can our arteries begin the journey 00:01:01.10\00:01:04.35 from pressured to peaceful? 00:01:04.38\00:01:06.43 Oh, I like that... I like the word "peaceful," Charles 00:01:06.46\00:01:08.96 That's something I really like. 00:01:08.99\00:01:10.71 But high blood pressure, that's a major issue 00:01:10.74\00:01:14.25 and we've been talking about the conditions that are 00:01:14.28\00:01:16.99 killing people all around the world. 00:01:17.02\00:01:18.62 I think back where we've been recently... 00:01:18.65\00:01:21.01 We've been to heart disease, the heart attacks, 00:01:21.04\00:01:23.05 the arrhythmias, the heart failure. 00:01:23.08\00:01:25.20 We've talked about medications; 00:01:25.23\00:01:27.15 how they can kill us. 00:01:27.18\00:01:28.58 Many different things - we've talked about stroke, 00:01:28.61\00:01:31.40 and now we move to high blood pressure. 00:01:31.43\00:01:33.68 How does that kill us? 00:01:33.71\00:01:35.08 Well first of all, Charles, I'm going to ask you a question. 00:01:35.11\00:01:37.23 Do you know what high blood pressure is? 00:01:37.26\00:01:39.41 I would assume that would be higher than it needs to be. 00:01:39.44\00:01:42.43 Exactly! We have to have some 00:01:42.46\00:01:43.83 blood pressure - we'd fall down dead. 00:01:43.86\00:01:45.39 And high blood pressure is that pressure that is generated 00:01:45.42\00:01:49.24 by the heart and it puts on the walls of the arteries. 00:01:49.27\00:01:51.97 So when your heart squeezes, we call that systole; 00:01:52.00\00:01:55.36 when it relaxes, we call it diastole. 00:01:55.39\00:01:57.85 So it pushes blood into the arteries throughout the body. 00:01:57.88\00:02:01.59 Unfortunately, sometimes that pressure is 00:02:01.62\00:02:04.62 higher than it needs to be, and we have a number, 00:02:04.65\00:02:06.63 and we use a fancy device called a "sphygmomanometer" 00:02:06.66\00:02:10.99 that measures this and we like that top number 00:02:11.02\00:02:14.51 ...you know it goes in a number, 00:02:14.54\00:02:15.91 we like that it be at least below 140 mmHg... 00:02:15.94\00:02:19.86 that's the pressure. 00:02:19.89\00:02:21.48 And we like that bottom one to be at least less than 90 mmHg 00:02:21.51\00:02:26.74 And people can get it tested in a drug store... 00:02:26.77\00:02:29.44 When was the last time you had yours checked, Charles? 00:02:29.47\00:02:31.11 About 6 months ago. 00:02:31.15\00:02:32.52 Do you remember what the number was? 00:02:32.55\00:02:35.18 97/55- That is a very good blood pressure. 00:02:35.21\00:02:39.28 And actually, the LOWER the pressure is, 00:02:39.31\00:02:41.37 the better - as long as you're meeting your needs of your body. 00:02:41.40\00:02:44.23 That was at Wal-Mart - can you trust the Wal-Mart thing? 00:02:44.26\00:02:47.74 That's where you put your arm in there... 00:02:47.77\00:02:49.64 Now that's usually pretty good. Okay, all right - okay. 00:02:49.67\00:02:52.15 Now if blood pressure goes unchecked, 00:02:52.18\00:02:55.06 day-in, day-out, year after year, 00:02:55.09\00:02:57.21 you might not even know it until there's damage done inside 00:02:57.24\00:03:00.18 That's why they call hypertension the "silent killer" 00:03:00.21\00:03:03.20 Years ago, doctors used to really make a big deal about 00:03:03.23\00:03:06.93 high blood pressure being the silent killer, 00:03:06.96\00:03:08.54 but now, other things have sort of come to the forefront, 00:03:08.57\00:03:11.41 but blood pressure is still a leading cause of death. 00:03:11.44\00:03:13.96 Well how does that happen? 00:03:13.99\00:03:15.36 Well when the blood pressure is up that many years, 00:03:15.39\00:03:19.01 sometimes a guy won't get it checked 00:03:19.04\00:03:20.83 from when he's 20 till 50 00:03:20.86\00:03:22.23 ...30 years of pressure - it stretches things out. 00:03:22.26\00:03:25.38 And have you heard this term "aneurysm?" Yes 00:03:25.41\00:03:27.95 Okay, well aneurysms can develop when the blood pressure 00:03:27.98\00:03:31.13 works on a weak spot and it can cause a 00:03:31.16\00:03:33.05 weakening of the artery; 00:03:33.08\00:03:34.45 the artery can actually explode and burst. 00:03:34.48\00:03:36.60 Can't you feel it when have all... Not necessarily! 00:03:36.63\00:03:39.98 That's why they call it "silent" 00:03:40.01\00:03:41.56 Now if you have an aneurysm in the head, 00:03:41.59\00:03:43.73 you might have a headache when it's bursting. 00:03:43.76\00:03:46.25 If you have an aneurysm here, 00:03:46.28\00:03:47.87 which is called an "abdominal aortic aneurysm" 00:03:47.90\00:03:50.24 sometimes you can feel that... 00:03:50.27\00:03:51.71 But you can also have stretching up here in the thoracic aorta; 00:03:51.74\00:03:55.27 you can have aneurysms back here behind the legs... 00:03:55.30\00:03:57.73 they call that a popliteal aneurysm. 00:03:57.76\00:04:00.12 So high blood pressure can contribute to aneurysms 00:04:00.15\00:04:02.51 Also, that pressure that's on the walls of blood vessels 00:04:02.54\00:04:05.76 day-in, day-out can damage the endothelium. 00:04:05.79\00:04:08.67 And if the endothelium is damaged, 00:04:08.70\00:04:10.55 it's more likely to pick up cholesterol and plaque. 00:04:10.58\00:04:13.00 And the endothelium is the lining of all the blood vessels 00:04:13.03\00:04:16.21 throughout the entire body. 00:04:16.24\00:04:17.74 So high blood pressure is a risk factor for developing 00:04:17.77\00:04:20.92 heart disease or atherosclerosis. 00:04:20.95\00:04:23.32 It's a risk factor for damaging the blood vessels on the legs 00:04:23.35\00:04:26.52 which we call peripheral vascular disease. 00:04:26.55\00:04:29.56 It's a risk factor for damaging the arteries 00:04:29.59\00:04:32.12 in the neck and brain which is called cerebral vascular disease 00:04:32.15\00:04:36.28 So high blood pressure can damage 00:04:36.31\00:04:37.80 not only our blood vessels, make them weak, 00:04:37.83\00:04:39.93 aneurysms also make it more likely to pick up plaques. 00:04:39.96\00:04:43.13 But not only THAT... 00:04:43.16\00:04:44.61 if you're pumping iron all the time, Charles, 00:04:44.64\00:04:49.23 ...You look like a weightlifter in your younger days... 00:04:49.26\00:04:51.11 Yeah... You look pretty stout there. Thank you! 00:04:51.14\00:04:52.51 But what happens to the muscles first, Charles? 00:04:52.54\00:04:54.82 At first, the muscles get BIG! Yes 00:04:54.85\00:04:57.23 They hypertrophy - they get bigger. 00:04:57.26\00:04:59.07 But as you lift weights longer and longer, 00:04:59.10\00:05:01.77 guess what? Sooner the muscles wear out. 00:05:01.80\00:05:04.17 And then they become weak. 00:05:04.20\00:05:05.87 Your arteries and veins are wearing out? No-no 00:05:05.90\00:05:08.96 But listen, if the heart has to pump against high pressure 00:05:09.00\00:05:11.89 all the time, your heart gets tired. 00:05:11.93\00:05:14.54 He can pump 20 years against it but sooner or later 00:05:14.58\00:05:17.13 the heart goes, "Man I'm tired, I'm getting weak" 00:05:17.16\00:05:19.88 So one of the causes of a weak heart is 00:05:19.91\00:05:22.58 pumping against too much pressure 00:05:22.61\00:05:24.57 for too long of a period of time. 00:05:24.60\00:05:26.84 So high blood pressure can contribute to heart failure. 00:05:26.87\00:05:29.69 It's one of the causes of a weak heart. 00:05:29.72\00:05:32.27 Also, high blood pressure can damage the arteries of the brain 00:05:32.30\00:05:37.42 leading to strokes. 00:05:37.45\00:05:39.06 It can damage the arteries in the organ of the kidney 00:05:39.09\00:05:42.00 leading to kidney damage and dialysis. 00:05:42.03\00:05:44.56 So high blood pressure really is a hidden killer. 00:05:44.59\00:05:48.22 And a lot of people now don't even realize they have it. 00:05:48.25\00:05:50.83 Now, let me tell you... 00:05:50.86\00:05:52.81 Years ago we didn't have quite as big a problem with 00:05:52.84\00:05:55.62 high blood pressure as we do today, 00:05:55.65\00:05:57.39 but our lifestyles have changed. 00:05:57.42\00:05:59.17 The more stress on our body, the higher the blood pressure. 00:05:59.20\00:06:02.30 And it's okay to have high blood pressure for a few minutes 00:06:02.33\00:06:04.52 if you're scared or if you're running a race it might go high 00:06:04.55\00:06:07.95 But then it comes right back down and that's good. 00:06:07.98\00:06:11.17 But if it's high all the time, it's going to damage things. 00:06:11.20\00:06:15.11 Now things that make it high all the time; 00:06:15.14\00:06:16.81 conditions that we get into... 00:06:16.84\00:06:18.21 There's a condition called "sleep apnea" 00:06:18.24\00:06:20.53 where you don't breathe enough at night. 00:06:20.56\00:06:22.59 You might not even know you have it. 00:06:22.62\00:06:23.99 Those people make a lot of catecholamines 00:06:24.02\00:06:27.15 which raise the blood pressure. 00:06:27.18\00:06:29.60 So one of the causes of high blood pressure 00:06:29.63\00:06:31.60 is sleep apnea. 00:06:31.63\00:06:33.49 Another cause is - years ago we didn't have all these 00:06:33.52\00:06:35.69 processed foods. 00:06:35.72\00:06:37.18 Well, anytime you take processed food and you have to 00:06:37.21\00:06:40.66 make it last a long time... 00:06:40.69\00:06:42.61 Guess what the settlers used to do to make their meat last? 00:06:42.64\00:06:45.71 They put SALT on it! 00:06:45.74\00:06:47.66 So salt is a preservative in almost all the foods. 00:06:47.70\00:06:50.56 Anything in a package, you're going to see sodium with it. 00:06:50.59\00:06:53.03 Anything from an animal has sodium in it. 00:06:53.06\00:06:55.52 Even a canful of soup has TONS of sodium! 00:06:55.55\00:06:59.18 Guess what sodium does? 00:06:59.21\00:07:00.58 Raises our blood pressure, 00:07:00.61\00:07:02.15 and we're eating more of that than ever 00:07:02.18\00:07:03.90 because we're eating more processed foods! 00:07:03.93\00:07:06.03 So we talked about that. 00:07:06.06\00:07:07.55 What about our weight? 00:07:07.58\00:07:08.95 Did you know that when you carry extra weight with you, 00:07:08.98\00:07:11.46 and the weight is called endocannabinoid system, 00:07:11.49\00:07:13.95 your weight makes chemicals - cortisol, adrenalin, 00:07:13.98\00:07:17.51 that ALSO raises your blood pressure. 00:07:17.54\00:07:20.11 So your blood pressure might be up for 30 years, 00:07:20.14\00:07:22.99 you might not even know it 00:07:23.02\00:07:24.39 until you go to the doctor in heart failure; 00:07:24.42\00:07:26.39 he might do a bunch of tests 00:07:26.42\00:07:27.86 and say, "Listen, you're in heart failure" 00:07:27.89\00:07:29.34 "Did you ever have high blood pressure?" 00:07:29.37\00:07:30.82 ...And you go, "I don't know" 00:07:30.85\00:07:32.22 And he says, "Well, it looks like you have 00:07:32.25\00:07:33.63 because your heart is worn out. " 00:07:33.66\00:07:35.47 So high blood pressure can be a hidden killer 00:07:35.50\00:07:38.90 even though it kills slowly. 00:07:38.93\00:07:41.00 It doesn't kill fast unless an 00:07:41.03\00:07:42.44 aneurysm ruptures or anything like that. 00:07:42.48\00:07:44.22 It's usually a slower killer. 00:07:44.26\00:07:45.94 So EVERYONE in the audience today NEEDS to have 00:07:45.97\00:07:48.82 their blood pressure checked! 00:07:48.85\00:07:50.46 Now if their blood pressure is CHECKED, 00:07:50.49\00:07:52.53 and if their blood pressure is HIGH, 00:07:52.56\00:07:54.20 the next thing I want to know is... 00:07:54.23\00:07:56.63 "Well, how long has this happened?" 00:07:56.66\00:07:58.04 And I can do that by checking 00:07:58.07\00:07:59.44 the organs to see if they're damaged. 00:07:59.47\00:08:01.08 If their kidneys are damaged, if their heart has been damaged, 00:08:01.11\00:08:04.17 ...In other words, the longer they've had the hypertension 00:08:04.20\00:08:06.52 then the more damage in the heart... 00:08:06.55\00:08:07.92 ...The more likely we've had damage to an organ. 00:08:07.95\00:08:09.52 Now I'm hoping they don't have it damaged. 00:08:09.55\00:08:11.61 But if I see damage done to an organ system, 00:08:11.64\00:08:14.12 I say, "Uh oh,... well, you've had this for 00:08:14.15\00:08:16.40 many, many years. " 00:08:16.43\00:08:17.80 And then we work on getting the blood pressure down. 00:08:17.83\00:08:20.30 And the key to getting the blood pressure down 00:08:20.33\00:08:22.39 is finding out WHY the blood pressure is high. 00:08:22.42\00:08:25.00 Is it because of diet? 00:08:25.03\00:08:26.42 Well then we want you to change your diet. 00:08:26.45\00:08:28.57 Is it because of weight? 00:08:28.60\00:08:29.97 We want you to lose weight. 00:08:30.00\00:08:31.37 Is it because of thyroid? 00:08:31.40\00:08:32.77 We want you to get your thyroid treated. 00:08:32.80\00:08:34.17 Is it because of sleep apnea? 00:08:34.20\00:08:35.57 We want THAT treated. 00:08:35.60\00:08:36.97 So the real treatment for high blood pressure 00:08:37.00\00:08:38.92 is to find out why FIRST 00:08:38.95\00:08:40.72 and NOT necessarily take a medication. 00:08:40.75\00:08:43.77 I can think of only 3 things, maybe you can tell me more; 00:08:43.80\00:08:47.38 3 things that would affect blood pressure. 00:08:47.41\00:08:50.10 The strength of the heart, 00:08:50.13\00:08:51.90 the condition of the arteries, 00:08:51.93\00:08:54.14 and the condition of the blood... 00:08:54.17\00:08:56.70 What else is there... those 3 things. 00:08:56.73\00:08:58.60 Well remember, the hormones, 00:08:58.63\00:09:00.77 thyroid can control the blood. 00:09:00.80\00:09:03.26 There are certain medical conditions like adrenalin... 00:09:03.29\00:09:05.35 That change the blood? Well, it changes the 00:09:05.38\00:09:07.43 constriction on the blood vessels. 00:09:07.46\00:09:09.00 Constriction - okay. 00:09:09.03\00:09:10.40 Like too much adrenalin. 00:09:10.43\00:09:11.80 For instance, let's say you have sleep apnea... 00:09:11.83\00:09:13.65 Well that puts stress on the body. 00:09:13.68\00:09:15.33 Whenever you have stress, you make adrenalin. 00:09:15.36\00:09:17.21 Adrenalin constricts the blood pressure. 00:09:17.24\00:09:18.98 When your blood pressure is too low, 00:09:19.01\00:09:20.41 I give you adrenalin to make the blood pressure go up. 00:09:20.44\00:09:22.44 I think of a hose being squeezed. 00:09:22.47\00:09:24.52 Yeah, well chemicals in the body can squeeze all those things, 00:09:24.55\00:09:28.53 and the real treatment is to get less adrenalin in the body. 00:09:28.56\00:09:31.23 Sodium can raise the blood pressure because 00:09:31.26\00:09:33.37 it concentrates within the blood vessels. 00:09:33.40\00:09:35.94 So there are lots of causes of high blood pressure. 00:09:35.97\00:09:38.49 And the real treatment is to try to identify the illness. 00:09:38.52\00:09:40.73 Now as we get older, here's the interesting thing, 00:09:40.76\00:09:43.18 as we get older, the blood vessels do get stiffer. 00:09:43.21\00:09:46.89 And as they get stiffer, naturally our blood pressure 00:09:46.92\00:09:49.41 goes up with age. 00:09:49.44\00:09:50.81 So the ways we can help stiff blood vessels, 00:09:50.84\00:09:53.05 the best thing is to exercise! 00:09:53.08\00:09:54.95 You know, to get out and get things 00:09:54.98\00:09:56.49 so they stay elastic longer. 00:09:56.52\00:09:58.71 So as we get older, the blood pressure goes up, 00:09:58.74\00:10:01.26 and the treatment for that would be maybe to exercise more, 00:10:01.29\00:10:04.61 or maybe to eat less salt. 00:10:04.64\00:10:06.10 Now some people have blood pressure that's genetic 00:10:06.13\00:10:08.47 and they can't do anything about it. 00:10:08.50\00:10:10.54 We call that "essential hypertension" 00:10:10.57\00:10:13.39 And some people that have essential hypertension 00:10:13.42\00:10:15.76 the risk of a medication - 00:10:15.79\00:10:17.87 okay - the risk of it, might be worth the benefits... 00:10:17.90\00:10:20.27 which is to prevent all this end-organ damage. 00:10:20.30\00:10:22.83 So there is a place for blood pressure control 00:10:22.86\00:10:25.30 with medications in people that have high blood pressure 00:10:25.33\00:10:27.85 that they can't get down any other way. 00:10:27.88\00:10:30.45 There you go - I think that's the secret... 00:10:30.48\00:10:31.85 That they can't get down any other way. 00:10:31.88\00:10:33.34 But most people, I would say, most people that I see 00:10:33.37\00:10:36.54 can get off some of the medications 00:10:36.57\00:10:38.09 IF they're willing to make the changes, 00:10:38.12\00:10:40.59 and that's a big IF. 00:10:40.62\00:10:41.99 And when I talk to people, 00:10:42.02\00:10:43.39 I say, "Well why don't you want to change?" 00:10:43.42\00:10:44.79 "Well I can't do it" "I can't eat right" 00:10:44.82\00:10:47.25 "I don't feel like I can do it" "I can't do this" 00:10:47.28\00:10:49.52 "You know, I HAVE to have my coffee" 00:10:49.55\00:10:51.60 "I have to have things that make my blood pressure... 00:10:51.63\00:10:53.62 "You know, I HAVE to have this food" 00:10:53.65\00:10:55.44 And I say, "Well listen, let's 00:10:55.47\00:10:57.39 ask the Master Physician for some help" 00:10:57.42\00:11:00.07 And I have them go to God first, 00:11:00.11\00:11:01.57 and say, "God, help this person 00:11:01.60\00:11:03.01 to treat their body the way You would have" 00:11:03.05\00:11:05.05 And I ask them to start with that relationship first. 00:11:05.08\00:11:07.64 And then just try 1 or 2 things 00:11:07.67\00:11:09.47 that can help lower the blood pressure. 00:11:09.50\00:11:11.16 Even us walking in place for a minute or 2 every day, 00:11:11.19\00:11:14.72 or hydrating themselves some more so you don't make 00:11:14.75\00:11:17.06 too much adrenalin... 00:11:17.09\00:11:18.46 Or make sure you don't have sleep apnea. 00:11:18.49\00:11:20.18 These are all things people can do, 00:11:20.21\00:11:21.83 and once God gives them the power to do things, 00:11:21.86\00:11:24.17 and they make just one little change, 00:11:24.20\00:11:25.83 they start to feel better and they see the results. 00:11:25.86\00:11:28.49 And when they see the results, 00:11:28.52\00:11:29.91 whether it be from eating a little bit smarter 00:11:29.94\00:11:31.70 or exercising, then they feel the power of God 00:11:31.73\00:11:33.93 and they know He's right there with them directing their care. 00:11:33.96\00:11:36.67 He's healing them! 00:11:36.70\00:11:38.07 Sometimes even your thoughts can make your 00:11:38.10\00:11:40.28 blood pressure go up - did you know that Charles? 00:11:40.31\00:11:41.99 I'm sure, absolutely! 00:11:42.02\00:11:45.24 And people that are STRESSED OUT, 00:11:45.27\00:11:46.72 people that write all day long like you do - Yes 00:11:46.75\00:11:49.40 You know, it can make your blood pressure go up. 00:11:49.43\00:11:51.41 People that get mad at people, 00:11:51.44\00:11:52.86 that can make your blood pressure go up. 00:11:52.89\00:11:54.43 Sometimes when you get excited, 00:11:54.46\00:11:55.90 that can make your blood pressure go up. 00:11:55.93\00:11:57.35 Well that's okay as long as it comes back down. 00:11:57.38\00:12:00.65 But if you're that way all the time, day-in and day-out, 00:12:00.68\00:12:03.14 you might have this condition which could be 00:12:03.17\00:12:05.53 a cause of death that many people 00:12:05.56\00:12:07.64 around the world are suffering. 00:12:07.68\00:12:09.05 So we want everyone to check on their blood pressure, 00:12:09.08\00:12:10.92 find out the reason why, and hopefully, 00:12:10.95\00:12:13.76 plug into the Great Physician who might be able to 00:12:13.79\00:12:15.62 give them some biblical prescriptions 00:12:15.65\00:12:17.64 that would bring down their blood pressure naturally... 00:12:17.67\00:12:19.72 And if you do need a medication, as we found out, 00:12:19.75\00:12:22.10 be very, very careful and learn everything you can about it. 00:12:22.13\00:12:25.57 I like what you said there... 00:12:25.60\00:12:26.97 You said that when you discover a problem... 00:12:27.00\00:12:30.28 To take it nice and easy - take it slow... 00:12:30.31\00:12:32.72 Try, after you've reestablished 00:12:32.75\00:12:34.91 that relationship with God, try 1 or 2 things... 00:12:34.94\00:12:38.13 Try increasing your water intake. 00:12:38.17\00:12:39.54 Try exercising more. 00:12:39.57\00:12:40.94 Maybe cut out some of the food that you know 00:12:40.97\00:12:43.18 isn't good for you and replace it with food that's good for you 00:12:43.21\00:12:45.84 In other words, you don't have to make a big 00:12:45.87\00:12:47.26 SWEEPING change... 00:12:47.29\00:12:48.66 And sometimes just that relationship itself 00:12:48.69\00:12:50.95 will give you peace that will lower your adrenalin level 00:12:50.98\00:12:53.84 and bring down your blood pressure.
