Our bodies are pretty resilient... 00:00:16.67\00:00:18.84 They can take a lot of abuse, but there's one category 00:00:18.87\00:00:21.74 of abuse they CAN'T TAKE, stay tuned... 00:00:21.77\00:00:25.98 I'm Dr. James Marcum 00:00:26.01\00:00:27.60 Are you interested in discovering the reason WHY? 00:00:27.63\00:00:31.01 Do you want solutions to your health care problems? 00:00:31.04\00:00:34.12 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:00:34.15\00:00:36.95 Well, you're about to be given "The Ultimate Prescription" 00:00:36.98\00:00:43.13 Today we continue our discussion on the major causes of death, 00:00:43.16\00:00:46.71 and what we can do to minimize our risks. 00:00:46.74\00:00:49.02 We visit the doctor's office... 00:00:49.05\00:00:50.43 he or she hands us a prescription; 00:00:50.46\00:00:52.37 we merrily make our way to the drugstore, 00:00:52.40\00:00:54.51 and soon we're heading home with a brand new bottle 00:00:54.54\00:00:56.61 of pills sitting in that little white bag beside us. 00:00:56.64\00:00:59.78 All too often, what's in that little white bag 00:00:59.81\00:01:02.96 isn't what we need for healing! 00:01:02.99\00:01:04.53 As a matter-of-fact, we'd have a better chance 00:01:04.56\00:01:06.86 of survival if the bag contained a live rattlesnake. 00:01:06.89\00:01:10.29 Many medicines, even common ones, 00:01:10.32\00:01:12.47 ones that everyone is taking, 00:01:12.50\00:01:14.18 do more harm than good. 00:01:14.21\00:01:16.59 Dr. Marcum, am I being over-dramatic here? 00:01:16.62\00:01:19.11 Well you know, the rattlesnake was a little bit exciting there! 00:01:19.14\00:01:23.14 But no, you make some valid points, Charles, 00:01:23.17\00:01:25.67 and I think that we need to all think about 00:01:25.70\00:01:28.96 the points that you did make. 00:01:28.99\00:01:30.68 We have a billion dollar-plus industry going on here... 00:01:30.71\00:01:35.79 And whenever you have money and medicine mixed together, 00:01:35.82\00:01:39.28 there are going to be things that are done unscrupulously! 00:01:39.31\00:01:42.84 Whether it's as dangerous as a rattlesnake, I don't know... 00:01:42.87\00:01:45.63 But, if you add up some of the data that I've generated 00:01:45.66\00:01:48.55 over the last year, you might be right on base. 00:01:48.58\00:01:51.93 We talked earlier about how the medications 00:01:51.96\00:01:55.02 are sometimes not packaged correctly; 00:01:55.05\00:01:57.37 how mistakes are made... 00:01:57.40\00:01:58.77 And it only makes sense, the more and more 00:01:58.80\00:02:00.51 medicines you give, the more and more chance 00:02:00.54\00:02:02.53 you have to make a mistake. 00:02:02.56\00:02:03.93 But, what we didn't mention quite as much as I'd like 00:02:03.96\00:02:07.45 to emphasize in this program is how these medications 00:02:07.48\00:02:10.12 ...each one of them have what I call "an adverse reaction" 00:02:10.15\00:02:14.09 There's no medicine that acts alone, 00:02:14.12\00:02:15.98 it just treats one thing. 00:02:16.01\00:02:17.40 For instance, a blood pressure pill... 00:02:17.43\00:02:19.85 The blood pressure pill lowers your blood pressure, 00:02:19.88\00:02:22.32 but sometimes it can make it go TOO LOW. 00:02:22.35\00:02:25.49 How do I know what any pill on any given situation 00:02:25.52\00:02:28.23 what your blood pressure will be? 00:02:28.26\00:02:30.00 The same with blood sugar. 00:02:30.03\00:02:31.79 What about blood thinners? 00:02:31.82\00:02:33.66 All these medications can do some great things to help you, 00:02:33.69\00:02:36.99 but ALSO can do some great things to hurt you. 00:02:37.02\00:02:39.92 I think back about patients, 00:02:39.95\00:02:42.01 you know, whether patients even take these medications correctly 00:02:42.04\00:02:45.35 I remember a gentleman... 00:02:45.38\00:02:46.75 Now this is a story I heard... this is not my patient. 00:02:46.78\00:02:49.51 But he was told he had a condition called "angina. " 00:02:49.54\00:02:52.76 You know, one of the arteries was blocked, 00:02:52.79\00:02:54.86 and every time he walked, he would hurt, 00:02:54.89\00:02:56.83 and he would stop and it would go away. 00:02:56.86\00:02:58.52 So a treatment for that, one of the treatments, 00:02:58.55\00:03:00.29 is to give nitroglycerin and everyone has probably heard 00:03:00.32\00:03:03.03 of nitroglycerin. 00:03:03.06\00:03:04.43 Well this gentleman was given a nitroglycerin patch, 00:03:04.46\00:03:07.22 and his doctor wrote that off 0.4 mg every hour, 00:03:07.25\00:03:11.99 and he gave him a prescription for that patch. 00:03:12.02\00:03:14.46 Well this gentleman went home and he diligently 00:03:14.49\00:03:17.68 took that prescription day in and day out he took it... 00:03:17.71\00:03:20.73 And he said, "MAN DOC!" 00:03:20.76\00:03:22.42 He came back to the doctor a couple of weeks later 00:03:22.45\00:03:24.08 and said, "This medicine is making me feel WORSE" 00:03:24.11\00:03:26.97 "I feel like I'm going to DIE" 00:03:27.00\00:03:28.55 "I'm sick at my stomach all the time" 00:03:28.58\00:03:30.60 "I'm nauseated, I'm dizzy all the time" 00:03:30.63\00:03:33.42 He says, "I'd rather have angina than have this 00:03:33.45\00:03:36.57 nitroglycerin prescription. " 00:03:36.60\00:03:38.30 And he goes on and says, "You know, every time I eat it, 00:03:38.33\00:03:41.36 I get this funny taste in my mouth" 00:03:41.39\00:03:43.58 And the doctor goes, OH NO! 00:03:43.61\00:03:45.88 "You were eating the nitroglycerin patch?" 00:03:45.91\00:03:48.55 He said, "No, that is supposed to be put on your skin" 00:03:48.58\00:03:51.76 "You put it on your skin in the morning 00:03:51.79\00:03:53.41 and take it off at night" 00:03:53.44\00:03:54.96 The guy was eating the patch! 00:03:54.99\00:03:57.31 So this patch-eating fellow nearly killed himself 00:03:57.34\00:04:00.72 from the taking the medicine the wrong way. 00:04:00.75\00:04:03.22 Unfortunately, doctors aren't explaining 00:04:03.25\00:04:07.17 how to take medications; 00:04:07.21\00:04:08.58 they're not explaining what to watch out for. 00:04:08.61\00:04:10.84 One doctor will write for one medication; 00:04:10.87\00:04:13.39 another doctor will write for another one... 00:04:13.42\00:04:15.29 They will get in the body, they won't mix well. 00:04:15.32\00:04:17.88 Certain foods like grapefruit juice will inactivate 00:04:17.91\00:04:21.55 certain medications. 00:04:21.58\00:04:22.95 Certain conditions in the body, 00:04:22.98\00:04:24.60 whether it be dehydration or whether it be 00:04:24.63\00:04:27.40 lack of sleep even, or extra stress 00:04:27.43\00:04:30.42 can all make these medications act in ways 00:04:30.45\00:04:33.29 that we don't even explain. 00:04:33.32\00:04:35.12 But back to the adverse reactions... 00:04:35.15\00:04:37.63 I write medications all the time that help people's 00:04:37.66\00:04:41.28 heart rhythms. 00:04:41.31\00:04:42.68 The rhythms that go fast like atrial fibrillation, 00:04:42.71\00:04:45.77 or these dangerous rhythms... 00:04:45.80\00:04:47.17 Unfortunately, each of these medications, 00:04:47.20\00:04:48.90 on the bottom it says, 00:04:48.93\00:04:50.30 "This medication can also cause what we call, a "proarrhythmia" 00:04:50.33\00:04:54.47 Now that's not a professional rhythm, okay... 00:04:54.50\00:04:57.61 A proarrhythmia is a dangerous life-threatening rhythm. 00:04:57.64\00:05:00.38 Yes, yes, you don't want that. 00:05:00.41\00:05:01.78 No, and almost all these medications 00:05:01.81\00:05:03.86 can cause these extra fast rhythms, 00:05:03.89\00:05:05.96 and when they go too fast, guess what? 00:05:05.99\00:05:07.74 No blood pressure goes to the head, you pass out, 00:05:07.77\00:05:10.41 things go bad! 00:05:10.44\00:05:11.98 If that wasn't enough, if we talk about medications can kill, 00:05:12.01\00:05:16.12 I look back over all the medications 00:05:16.15\00:05:18.71 through the years that I used to give... 00:05:18.74\00:05:21.26 One for weight loss "Fen-phen" 00:05:21.30\00:05:22.67 We heard about that... 00:05:22.70\00:05:24.07 BOOM! It's off the market! Why is that? 00:05:24.10\00:05:25.78 Because it makes heart valves go bad. 00:05:25.81\00:05:27.81 For a while, we used to give a cholesterol medication 00:05:27.84\00:05:30.83 called "Baycol" 00:05:30.86\00:05:32.23 BOOM! It's off the market because it killed people's liver 00:05:32.26\00:05:35.66 I go back through the years... 00:05:35.69\00:05:37.43 One after one of these medications - off the market! 00:05:37.46\00:05:39.72 I'm sure people used to use Vyoxx and Celebrex... 00:05:39.75\00:05:42.62 that's off the market! 00:05:42.65\00:05:44.02 It caused people to have more heart attacks! 00:05:44.05\00:05:46.51 All the medicines that cause dangerous heart rhythms 00:05:46.54\00:05:49.37 ...once on the market, now OFF the market. 00:05:49.40\00:05:51.85 Now WHY didn't they figure this out BEFORE they gave it to us? 00:05:51.88\00:05:55.42 Well THAT is a GREAT question, Charles. 00:05:55.45\00:05:58.40 For years and years, it used to be the medications 00:05:58.43\00:06:02.41 used to be tested overseas on 00:06:02.44\00:06:04.68 the thousands and thousands of thousands of patients. 00:06:04.71\00:06:07.33 But now, and this happened probably about the time of HIV, 00:06:07.36\00:06:11.29 they wanted to get these medications 00:06:11.32\00:06:13.16 to the market quicker, 00:06:13.19\00:06:14.70 so all of a sudden, they became fast tracking medications, 00:06:14.73\00:06:17.74 so they didn't study them on as many people. 00:06:17.77\00:06:20.87 So literally, our PATIENTS are becoming the 00:06:20.90\00:06:24.05 post market surveillance system! 00:06:24.08\00:06:25.97 We're the TEST subjects in this stuff? 00:06:26.00\00:06:28.44 Unfortunately, so we're becoming... 00:06:28.47\00:06:30.57 you know they say, "Doctors write in when you see 00:06:30.60\00:06:33.05 bad things happen" 00:06:33.08\00:06:34.45 And unfortunately, medications can cause things to happen 00:06:34.48\00:06:37.60 and we don't even know it! 00:06:37.63\00:06:39.04 We've heard of some medications that cause people to think 00:06:39.07\00:06:42.09 crazy and even commit suicide. 00:06:42.12\00:06:44.32 We have some medications that it does what it's supposed to do 00:06:44.35\00:06:46.96 but, on some people, they don't take it right, 00:06:46.99\00:06:48.93 and it does MORE than it should do. 00:06:48.96\00:06:50.68 So as you can see, if you add up all the little things 00:06:50.71\00:06:53.37 that could happen with the medication, 00:06:53.40\00:06:55.04 not taking it right, mistakes in dosing... 00:06:55.07\00:06:59.12 and that happens in the hospital sometimes... 00:06:59.15\00:07:00.92 You know you make a mistake in dosing, 00:07:00.95\00:07:02.56 you put a little extra in the IV, 00:07:02.59\00:07:04.45 and things that we know the drug can do, 00:07:04.48\00:07:07.23 except it does it more than it should on any given person 00:07:07.26\00:07:10.22 ...All of a sudden, we have side-effects, people die, 00:07:10.25\00:07:13.22 and BAD things happen. 00:07:13.25\00:07:15.47 And it's just really, really sad because we need to 00:07:15.50\00:07:17.64 get the word out that these medications are a cause of death 00:07:17.67\00:07:21.30 They are used to treat symptoms, but we always have to balance 00:07:21.33\00:07:24.79 the RISK of the medication versus the benefit. 00:07:24.82\00:07:28.54 Every medication, Charles, is going to change your chemistry. 00:07:28.57\00:07:32.10 And what scares me the most is some of these 00:07:32.13\00:07:34.21 mind-altering medications. "Well I guess she needs more oxygen.
