The following program presents principles designed 00:00:01.40\00:00:02.91 to promote good health and is not intended to take 00:00:02.94\00:00:05.45 the place of personalized professional care. 00:00:05.48\00:00:07.91 The opinions and the ideas 00:00:07.94\00:00:09.31 expressed are those of the speaker. 00:00:09.34\00:00:10.91 Viewers are encouraged to draw their own conclusions 00:00:10.94\00:00:13.31 about the information presented. 00:00:13.34\00:00:17.33 When you place your hand over your heart, 00:00:17.36\00:00:19.44 you can feel its rhythmic cadence at least 00:00:19.47\00:00:22.52 that's what you suppose to feel. Stay tuned. 00:00:22.55\00:00:27.19 I'm Dr. James Marcum. 00:00:27.22\00:00:29.25 Are you interested in discovering the reason why? 00:00:29.28\00:00:32.66 You want solutions to your health care problems? 00:00:32.69\00:00:35.40 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:00:35.43\00:00:38.30 Well, you're about to be given the Ultimate Prescription. 00:00:38.33\00:00:42.53 Today we continue our series on what's killing us. 00:00:42.56\00:00:45.76 Life is filled with rhythm. 00:00:45.79\00:00:48.17 Seasons come and go and day follows night, 00:00:48.20\00:00:51.12 everything seems to be tied to an unseen second hand. 00:00:51.15\00:00:54.85 Even our hearts tap by the constant rhythm. 00:00:54.88\00:00:57.97 But what happens when the heart gets out of sync? 00:00:58.00\00:01:01.40 What happens when our hearts failed 00:01:01.43\00:01:02.80 to play along with the rest of creation? 00:01:02.83\00:01:05.20 Let's talk with Cardiologist, Dr. James Marcum 00:01:05.23\00:01:07.37 about heart rhythm and how to stay in sync. 00:01:07.40\00:01:10.51 Dr. Marcum, what do we need to know? 00:01:10.54\00:01:12.67 Well, you know, in our series 00:01:12.70\00:01:14.07 we're talking about all the things 00:01:14.10\00:01:15.91 that can take us prematurely, that can kill us. 00:01:15.94\00:01:19.00 We've talked about coronary disease 00:01:19.03\00:01:20.87 which is heart attacks. 00:01:20.90\00:01:22.50 Now it's time to talk about the other things 00:01:22.53\00:01:24.43 within the heart that can also take us to a premature grave. 00:01:24.46\00:01:28.65 One of the things we think about is the rhythm of a heart 00:01:28.68\00:01:31.30 like you've talked about. 00:01:31.33\00:01:32.78 And unfortunately lot of the rhythm disturbances 00:01:32.81\00:01:35.24 people are born with. 00:01:35.27\00:01:37.93 We have several of them that we occasionally 00:01:37.96\00:01:39.94 hear of been athletic that passes away suddenly, 00:01:39.97\00:01:42.25 you know, running a Boston Marathon 00:01:42.28\00:01:44.04 or someone previously healthy passes away. 00:01:44.07\00:01:46.64 Well, there is some of these rhythm problems 00:01:46.67\00:01:48.49 that are congenital that means we have been born with that. 00:01:48.52\00:01:51.73 Some of the names of them will be the Long Q.T. syndrome 00:01:51.76\00:01:55.03 you might have heard of that. 00:01:55.06\00:01:56.43 There is some congenital abnormalities 00:01:56.46\00:01:57.87 that predispose the heart to having a funny heart rhythm. 00:01:57.90\00:02:01.63 One of the most common one 00:02:01.66\00:02:03.03 is called a Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. 00:02:03.06\00:02:05.89 You're born with genes that make the heart thick. 00:02:05.92\00:02:08.68 When the heart's thick of course it can go very rapidly. 00:02:08.71\00:02:11.85 Another thing that people die from suddenly 00:02:11.88\00:02:13.79 is occasionally they get a virus in their heart, 00:02:13.82\00:02:16.25 which makes the heart weak, 00:02:16.28\00:02:17.65 which again predisposes it to an abnormal rhythm. 00:02:17.68\00:02:21.75 Some people later in life, 00:02:21.78\00:02:23.94 the battery of the heart gets old. 00:02:23.97\00:02:25.93 The battery of the heart-- Yes, the battery of the heart. 00:02:25.96\00:02:27.99 Well, you have a little structure 00:02:28.02\00:02:29.42 in the top of the heart called the Sinoatrial Node. 00:02:29.45\00:02:32.80 It's like a car battery to make it simple. 00:02:32.83\00:02:35.76 And some people it gets older and it gets calcified 00:02:35.79\00:02:38.44 and the heart goes slower and slower and slower, 00:02:38.47\00:02:41.46 and a symptom of this might be dizziness 00:02:41.49\00:02:43.53 or not having any energy. 00:02:43.56\00:02:45.38 And for that we would treat with a pacemaker. 00:02:45.41\00:02:48.28 In fact Alfred Hitchcock had one of the first pacemakers 00:02:48.31\00:02:52.10 back in the 60's and that pacemaker 00:02:52.13\00:02:54.17 was so big that it filled up or so whole abdomen. 00:02:54.20\00:02:57.55 But before that happened people use to pass away. 00:02:57.58\00:03:00.72 I had a pastor that I took care of a few years ago 00:03:00.75\00:03:03.77 when I was practicing on the east coast, 00:03:03.80\00:03:05.60 that had a condition called Lyme disease, 00:03:05.63\00:03:08.24 that's a tick-borne disease and that infection made 00:03:08.27\00:03:11.21 his heart go exceedingly slow. 00:03:11.24\00:03:13.31 And before we had modern medicine 00:03:13.34\00:03:14.91 he might have died from this condition, 00:03:14.94\00:03:17.26 but we placed the pacemaker in him in his 30s 00:03:17.29\00:03:20.02 and he still doing ministry today. 00:03:20.05\00:03:22.22 So this is a great place for modern medicine. 00:03:22.25\00:03:24.85 So the heart can go too slow which would need a pacemaker. 00:03:24.88\00:03:28.42 It can go too fast and the treatment 00:03:28.45\00:03:31.03 for that will be sometimes we put in a defibrillator 00:03:31.06\00:03:33.71 especially for these congenital abnormalities. 00:03:33.74\00:03:36.60 Sometimes we also give them medication that might help. 00:03:36.63\00:03:39.97 And sometimes we have the fancy procedure 00:03:40.00\00:03:42.05 will be go up inside the heart with catheters. 00:03:42.08\00:03:45.25 We find out where that electrical short circuits 00:03:45.28\00:03:47.71 coming from and we destroy that rhythm. 00:03:47.74\00:03:50.94 That's called an Ablation. We ablate the rhythm. 00:03:50.97\00:03:54.33 We destroy it so it doesn't bother you more. 00:03:54.36\00:03:57.05 There is some congenital ones that we have. 00:03:57.08\00:03:58.89 One is called Wolff-Parkinson White Syndrome 00:03:58.92\00:04:01.68 that can be deadly just because the electrical wires 00:04:01.71\00:04:04.48 usually are congenitally malformed. 00:04:04.51\00:04:06.61 This is a great place for modern medicine. 00:04:06.64\00:04:09.19 Now there is nothing people do to acquire this, 00:04:09.22\00:04:11.49 they're just born this way. 00:04:11.52\00:04:12.96 So what percentage are we talking about here, 00:04:12.99\00:04:14.51 people that have this condition 00:04:14.54\00:04:16.47 and they're just gonna have it? 00:04:16.50\00:04:17.87 Well, it varies from around the world, 00:04:17.90\00:04:19.84 you know, the congenital abnormalities varies. 00:04:19.87\00:04:21.77 It also varies on your genetics. 00:04:21.80\00:04:23.91 But when we hear of a young person 00:04:23.94\00:04:25.92 passing away suddenly, 00:04:25.95\00:04:27.73 when we hear of an athletic passing away suddenly, 00:04:27.76\00:04:30.66 we say well let's evaluate this. 00:04:30.69\00:04:32.06 Now in Italy for instance 00:04:32.09\00:04:33.70 they're screening people with EKGs. 00:04:33.73\00:04:36.69 But what we do specifically is we ask people, 00:04:36.72\00:04:38.86 do you have anything in your family 00:04:38.89\00:04:40.35 or anyone passed away suddenly in the family, 00:04:40.38\00:04:42.51 which might show that they had an rhythm abnormality? 00:04:42.54\00:04:45.64 Now unfortunately the number one killer 00:04:45.67\00:04:47.71 around the world of hearts is not congenital. 00:04:47.74\00:04:51.00 You weren't born with it you acquire it. 00:04:51.03\00:04:53.62 And unfortunately we acquire by our lifestyles 00:04:53.65\00:04:55.81 and we get blockages in the arteries. 00:04:55.84\00:04:57.65 When blockages in the arteries the heart 00:04:57.68\00:04:59.32 doesn't get enough oxygen, 00:04:59.35\00:05:00.81 when it doesn't get enough oxygen and nutrients 00:05:00.84\00:05:03.37 that throws you electrical system off 00:05:03.40\00:05:05.37 that also predisposes you to rhythm problems. 00:05:05.40\00:05:08.34 So people that have very weak heart. 00:05:08.37\00:05:10.24 They're not getting enough oxygen 00:05:10.27\00:05:11.85 that sometimes causes arrhythmia. 00:05:11.88\00:05:13.94 They have to go to the hospital. 00:05:13.97\00:05:15.34 Did you see in animals, haven't you, Charles? 00:05:15.37\00:05:16.74 Oh, yes. Okay. 00:05:16.77\00:05:18.14 Well, you know, the first thing that happens is 00:05:18.17\00:05:19.61 when they come to the scene, 00:05:19.64\00:05:21.01 you know, they hookup the electrodes to see 00:05:21.04\00:05:22.89 if there is a funny heart rhythm. 00:05:22.92\00:05:24.48 One of the heart rhythms called ventricular fibrillation, 00:05:24.51\00:05:27.14 ventricular tachycardia, and for those rhythms 00:05:27.17\00:05:29.68 they shock the heart. 00:05:29.71\00:05:31.72 Nowadays we have external defibrillators 00:05:31.75\00:05:34.14 where common people, in airports, in churches 00:05:34.17\00:05:37.14 where someone might have a heart attack 00:05:37.17\00:05:39.00 or funny heart rhythm we have these devices available 00:05:39.03\00:05:42.27 where people can just hook you up. It analysis it yourself. 00:05:42.30\00:05:45.37 It analysis you? Yes. 00:05:45.40\00:05:46.77 You press a button and if it's a dangerous rhythm 00:05:46.80\00:05:48.97 that shocked you. That's called the defibrillator. 00:05:49.00\00:05:51.63 It makes the decision. Right. 00:05:51.66\00:05:53.03 You hook it up and it makes the decision-- 00:05:53.06\00:05:54.44 It does all of those things. And how much it makes? 00:05:54.47\00:05:56.26 It does all of those things. Okay. 00:05:56.29\00:05:57.66 Another type of device we have is a device 00:05:57.69\00:06:00.02 that we call an Internal Defibrillator, 00:06:00.05\00:06:02.37 where we actually implant these things in long-term. 00:06:02.40\00:06:05.60 And I think I brought a defibrillator and a Pacemaker. 00:06:05.63\00:06:08.89 Yes, we do have one of each here 00:06:08.92\00:06:10.29 and that they look sort of alike. 00:06:10.32\00:06:12.07 You're gonna have to help me, which one is which now? 00:06:12.10\00:06:14.35 Yeah, well, this would be called an internal defibrillator. 00:06:14.38\00:06:18.18 And what we would do is we would place this within a body 00:06:18.21\00:06:22.06 and we would put it under the skin 00:06:22.09\00:06:24.23 and then we have a lead that would connect with that. 00:06:24.26\00:06:27.40 There is the lead right here. 00:06:27.43\00:06:28.80 Right, and it would be under the body and this lead is-- 00:06:28.83\00:06:30.86 Let's put it over there against your body, 00:06:30.89\00:06:32.27 above where it go in there? 00:06:32.30\00:06:33.67 About right here in the heart, 00:06:33.70\00:06:35.07 we put it right there and we put a lead here 00:06:35.10\00:06:36.98 and we would run this lead into the heart 00:06:37.01\00:06:39.81 and this lead would analyze the heart rhythm. 00:06:39.84\00:06:42.56 And if it wasn't unstable heart rhythm 00:06:42.59\00:06:44.58 it would shock the heart. Okay, all right. 00:06:44.61\00:06:46.67 This one also has a pacemaker built in it 00:06:46.70\00:06:49.34 so if it was going too slow it would pace the heart. 00:06:49.37\00:06:52.68 Now I also brought a pacemaker with us to see how small it is. 00:06:52.71\00:06:54.78 Here it is. Now this is alike, but it is smaller one. 00:06:54.81\00:06:57.25 Yeah, a pacemaker doesn't do as much, 00:06:57.28\00:06:59.12 so some of the internal circuitry is much less 00:06:59.15\00:07:01.89 and so as in computer that sees every beat of your heart. 00:07:01.92\00:07:04.90 This one can actually store the rhythm. 00:07:04.93\00:07:06.58 So we can see what every beat of your heart is doing. 00:07:06.61\00:07:08.61 It's got a monitor inside it. 00:07:08.64\00:07:10.13 Like a computer in your heart. 00:07:10.16\00:07:11.53 Yes. It's got a few. 00:07:11.56\00:07:12.93 This one has a little computer in it too. 00:07:12.96\00:07:14.33 And this--but all this does is, does a slow rhythm. 00:07:14.36\00:07:17.16 It doesn't do the fast heart rhythms. 00:07:17.19\00:07:19.06 So these are devices that if you're so disposed 00:07:19.09\00:07:21.91 to having these, person has a weak heart, 00:07:21.94\00:07:24.39 might have a fast heart, 00:07:24.42\00:07:25.79 and this is like having an ambulance with you, 00:07:25.82\00:07:27.45 Charles, 24x7. Wow. 00:07:27.48\00:07:29.56 And this helps keep the heart from going too slow. 00:07:29.59\00:07:32.30 So this makes the decision that you're heart's in trouble. Yes. 00:07:32.33\00:07:35.79 Decides what to do and sends a little shock down there. 00:07:35.82\00:07:38.25 Yes, it's like having an ambulance 00:07:38.28\00:07:40.12 with you 24x7. Ah, an ambulance. 00:07:40.15\00:07:41.98 So for an instance a young person 00:07:42.01\00:07:43.98 that has one of these congenital electrical abnormalities 00:07:44.01\00:07:47.19 they might get defibrillator. 00:07:47.22\00:07:48.79 For an older person that has blockage in their arteries 00:07:48.82\00:07:51.03 or weak heart they might get a defibrillator. 00:07:51.06\00:07:53.66 And for person whose heart goes too slow 00:07:53.69\00:07:55.82 from an infection or weak heart or if they might have 00:07:55.85\00:07:58.61 a just--this conduction system gets old 00:07:58.64\00:08:01.42 this would keep the heart from going too slow 00:08:01.45\00:08:03.94 and eventually stopping. 00:08:03.97\00:08:05.34 So we have some great tools for modern medicine 00:08:05.37\00:08:07.83 to keep the heart going and deal 00:08:07.86\00:08:09.49 with these funny heart rhythms. That is amazing. 00:08:09.52\00:08:12.69 Now of course this is the modern medicine 00:08:12.72\00:08:14.50 and of things and we thank God that this exist. 00:08:14.53\00:08:17.91 But is there anything that we can do, Dr. Marcum, 00:08:17.94\00:08:21.01 maybe after this has been put in or even before this is put in, 00:08:21.04\00:08:24.49 so that we won't have to deal 00:08:24.52\00:08:26.15 with these machines, is that possible? 00:08:26.18\00:08:27.98 Well, that's a great question, Charles, 00:08:28.01\00:08:29.74 because a lot of people do not like to take those medications. 00:08:29.77\00:08:33.39 A lot of people don't like to take treatment for the heart. 00:08:33.42\00:08:35.85 But most of these for the young people are congenital. 00:08:35.88\00:08:38.78 They're born with it. 00:08:38.81\00:08:40.18 They had bad genetics that's been passed down 00:08:40.21\00:08:41.93 from generation to generations. 00:08:41.96\00:08:43.80 Two hundred years ago that person would pass away, 00:08:43.83\00:08:47.29 but now we have life saving devices. 00:08:47.32\00:08:49.60 Now the other condition where people clogged their arteries up 00:08:49.63\00:08:53.10 or get weak hearts, yes that can be preventable. 00:08:53.13\00:08:56.80 We can do lifestyle changes. 00:08:56.83\00:08:58.45 We've talked about those before, 00:08:58.48\00:08:59.95 preventing the stress that might be put on our heart. 00:08:59.98\00:09:02.72 Maybe quitting smoking or getting diabetes, 00:09:02.75\00:09:04.98 or exercising, or eating a smart diet 00:09:05.01\00:09:07.37 keeping your cholesterol down, 00:09:07.40\00:09:08.86 all those might be able to alleviate the need for this 00:09:08.89\00:09:12.01 at some point in our lives. 00:09:12.04\00:09:13.95 You know, a lot of people ask me why would I do 00:09:13.98\00:09:16.49 all of these things that we talk about on this program. 00:09:16.52\00:09:19.63 Well, you have to do something because the body 00:09:19.66\00:09:23.72 with 6000 years from the hand of creator 00:09:23.75\00:09:25.95 and the body is going to get you one way 00:09:25.98\00:09:28.20 or another because it is a such a sinful body 00:09:28.23\00:09:30.34 that we have, but there are things 00:09:30.37\00:09:31.81 that we can do to medicate that to cause the problems 00:09:31.84\00:09:34.97 from not happening to make them not happen. 00:09:35.00\00:09:38.45 Dr. Marcum, if you could make a change in the lifestyle 00:09:38.48\00:09:43.79 of all the world, you could go into their house 00:09:43.82\00:09:46.30 and do one thing different, 00:09:46.33\00:09:48.00 what would you have them do-- Well-- 00:09:48.03\00:09:49.78 To help, to protect the heart? 00:09:49.81\00:09:51.18 You know, I've thought about that a lot. 00:09:51.21\00:09:52.58 If I had one thing to do to protect the heart 00:09:52.61\00:09:54.40 I would encourage them to come into a relationship 00:09:54.43\00:09:56.92 with your creator, because when they come into a relationship 00:09:56.95\00:10:00.17 with the creator this will lead them to truths, 00:10:00.20\00:10:02.57 the truths in the Bible. 00:10:02.60\00:10:04.22 This is what happened in my life, Charles. 00:10:04.25\00:10:05.80 You know, I was trained in modern medicine 00:10:05.83\00:10:08.09 but as I learned the truths in the Bible 00:10:08.12\00:10:09.66 I realized that the Bible was a medical textbook. 00:10:09.69\00:10:12.75 But not only was that a medical textbook 00:10:12.78\00:10:14.53 to show me when to use modern medicine, 00:10:14.56\00:10:16.58 it also gave me the power to understand 00:10:16.61\00:10:18.57 what things I was doing wrong, 00:10:18.60\00:10:20.41 makes some changes in my life, 00:10:20.44\00:10:22.10 understand where all these fits in. 00:10:22.13\00:10:24.79 And so that's the one thing I would encourage people 00:10:24.82\00:10:26.86 and, you know, lot of doctors say, 00:10:26.89\00:10:28.26 well, let's get this device or put you on this pill. 00:10:28.29\00:10:30.34 Or some people say, well, you become this diet 00:10:30.37\00:10:32.12 or eat this or exercise everyday. 00:10:32.15\00:10:33.77 Well, what I wanna encourage people to 00:10:33.80\00:10:35.65 and that is into treatment for heart disease 00:10:35.68\00:10:38.41 and every disease start the treatment 00:10:38.44\00:10:41.42 with the relationship with the great physician 00:10:41.45\00:10:44.21 who will not only reveal truth, 00:10:44.24\00:10:46.39 but He will also heal us. 00:10:46.42\00:10:48.67 Now I've seen miracles happen sometimes. 00:10:48.70\00:10:50.77 I've seen people that get treated up with prayer 00:10:50.80\00:10:54.84 and through this relationship God takes their problem away. 00:10:54.87\00:10:57.91 But also He helps lead to their appropriateness 00:10:57.94\00:11:00.25 of modern medicine, to give the power to change. 00:11:00.28\00:11:02.72 Now we've talked a little bit about the rhythms, 00:11:02.75\00:11:04.97 but there is other things with heart 00:11:05.00\00:11:06.42 that can damage us too. 00:11:06.45\00:11:07.82 Weak hearts from infection, bad heart valves, 00:11:07.85\00:11:11.51 all of these things lead up to heart disease. 00:11:11.54\00:11:13.37 But, you know, modern medicine can do surgery on the heart. 00:11:13.40\00:11:16.05 We can place the defibrillators in the heart. 00:11:16.08\00:11:18.11 But also we wanna do everything possible 00:11:18.14\00:11:20.43 we can to live according to the owner's manual 00:11:20.46\00:11:22.93 so we don't need modern medicine. 00:11:22.96\00:11:24.91 Well, I like that. 00:11:24.94\00:11:26.31 In other words when we bow-- 00:11:26.34\00:11:27.71 when we bow our knees and when we pray, 00:11:27.74\00:11:29.78 when we get in our car and we go to church, 00:11:29.81\00:11:32.13 when we do something nice for someone, 00:11:32.16\00:11:34.21 when we spend time in God's word, 00:11:34.24\00:11:36.74 we're actually helping our hearts when we do that. 00:11:36.77\00:11:39.96 Absolutely, Charles. 00:11:39.99\00:11:41.47 What I want our listeners and viewers to understand 00:11:41.50\00:11:44.34 is that the physical heart we have modern medicine for. 00:11:44.37\00:11:47.78 We can also help a lot. 00:11:47.81\00:11:49.18 A lot of people don't understand that 00:11:49.21\00:11:50.58 what we eat and what we think also is a treatment 00:11:50.61\00:11:53.15 as well a prevention for heart disease. 00:11:53.18\00:11:55.38 But in addition, God has ability to heal our physical hearts 00:11:55.41\00:11:59.02 to change our hearts 00:11:59.05\00:12:00.42 and even if we can't get it right with modern medicine 00:12:00.45\00:12:02.59 we can be promised healing at some point in our lives. 00:12:02.62\00:12:05.99 That is good news, that is good news. 00:12:06.02\00:12:08.12 Too many of us believe that if we mess up our lives 00:12:08.15\00:12:11.15 as we can just simply go to the doctor and he'll fix it. 00:12:11.18\00:12:13.63 Well, doctors are amazing people 00:12:13.66\00:12:15.26 and they can do amazing things 00:12:15.29\00:12:16.66 but there are some things they cannot fix 00:12:16.69\00:12:19.42 and one of the things they can't fix is your bad habits. 00:12:19.45\00:12:22.82 And I'm sure Dr. Marcum, you'd like to 00:12:22.85\00:12:25.22 but you can't do that. 00:12:25.25\00:12:26.83 So we'll take a short break 00:12:26.86\00:12:28.28 and when we come back we'll have questions 00:12:28.31\00:12:30.08 that have been sent in to heartwiseministries.org 00:12:30.11\00:12:32.72 on this topic. So stay right where you are. 00:12:32.75\00:12:34.94
