That would be a-- 00:01:46.06\00:01:48.27 Yeah, your adrenaline goes up. 00:01:48.30\00:01:49.80 Yes, thank you very much. 00:01:49.83\00:01:51.20 Well, can you imagine what would be the case 00:01:51.23\00:01:53.35 if your adrenaline's up day in and day out. 00:01:53.38\00:01:56.49 The chemistry that it makes, it makes adrenaline, cortisol, 00:01:56.52\00:01:59.95 inflammatory markers damages 00:01:59.98\00:02:02.26 the inside lining of blood vessels, 00:02:02.29\00:02:04.32 makes you more likely to constrict the blood vessels, 00:02:04.35\00:02:06.59 raises your blood pressure 00:02:06.62\00:02:08.08 and then we're under extreme stress, we had bad habits. 00:02:08.11\00:02:11.77 Some people drink alcohol, 00:02:11.80\00:02:13.71 some people sleep all day long, some people watch T.V, 00:02:13.74\00:02:17.05 some people smoke cigarettes or take drugs, 00:02:17.08\00:02:19.44 well, these aren't the way to deal with stress. 00:02:19.47\00:02:22.20 But stress day in and day out 00:02:22.23\00:02:23.97 raises the risk of heart attack. 00:02:24.00\00:02:25.37 Of course cigarettes cause stress, 00:02:25.40\00:02:27.73 diabetes cause stress but there is many things 00:02:27.76\00:02:29.77 that we don't even think about that causes stress. 00:02:29.80\00:02:32.53 So I define stress as anything that we 00:02:32.56\00:02:35.84 do that goes against the owners manual. 00:02:35.87\00:02:38.63 You know, God gave us this template back at creation 00:02:38.66\00:02:41.58 and we do things that stray from that, 00:02:41.61\00:02:44.19 these stress chemistries turn on. 00:02:44.22\00:02:46.71 Now unfortunately our relatives did things 00:02:46.74\00:02:49.48 and we had genetic stress 00:02:49.51\00:02:51.73 and there are some doctors out there that say, 00:02:51.76\00:02:53.98 you can never have a heart attack 00:02:54.01\00:02:55.79 if you eat perfect and exercise and do that. 00:02:55.82\00:02:58.27 Well, I disagree with that because one in five people 00:02:58.30\00:03:01.69 can still have a genetic stress that's passed out. 00:03:01.72\00:03:05.07 I took care of a gentleman not long ago, 00:03:05.10\00:03:07.51 57-years-old he comes in the office Charles 00:03:07.54\00:03:10.76 and he had a heart attack, and he says, 00:03:10.79\00:03:12.75 how could I have a heart attack? 00:03:12.78\00:03:14.19 You know, I'm a vegan I don't eat anything from dairy meat. 00:03:14.22\00:03:17.48 I exercise 45 minutes a day 00:03:17.51\00:03:20.13 and I had a heart attack at 57. 00:03:20.16\00:03:21.62 He was really bummed out 00:03:21.65\00:03:23.12 because he had done everything perfect. 00:03:23.15\00:03:25.18 And then I asked him how old was your dad 00:03:25.21\00:03:27.49 when he had his heart attack? 00:03:27.52\00:03:29.16 He said, how did you know? 00:03:29.19\00:03:30.94 He was 40 years old when your dad had his first one. 00:03:30.97\00:03:33.60 So in his case he had prevented a heart attack 00:03:33.63\00:03:36.50 by 17 years old--17 years just by taking good care of his body. 00:03:36.53\00:03:41.54 So anyway he felt bummed but he was glad 00:03:41.57\00:03:44.59 we did have modern medicine 00:03:44.62\00:03:45.99 because that stent helped open up his artery 00:03:46.02\00:03:48.50 and now we're doing everything else 00:03:48.53\00:03:50.02 we can to keep that stent happy, 00:03:50.05\00:03:52.20 so stress on a system, things that we do 00:03:52.23\00:03:54.63 that we weren't designed to do. 00:03:54.66\00:03:56.58 Remember we're originally designed to rest one day a week. 00:03:56.61\00:03:59.14 That's right. But when we don't do that, 00:03:59.17\00:04:00.54 stress on a body raises the risk of heart attack. 00:04:00.57\00:04:03.50 We're designed to drink water 00:04:03.53\00:04:04.90 and not a lot of other beverages, 00:04:04.93\00:04:06.44 when we do that stress on the body. 00:04:06.47\00:04:08.48 We were designed to be outside doing things, 00:04:08.51\00:04:11.03 when we don't do that, stress on the body. 00:04:11.06\00:04:12.74 We were never designed to sit at the desk all day long 00:04:12.77\00:04:16.31 working with computer. 00:04:16.34\00:04:17.87 Do you do that Charles? 00:04:17.90\00:04:19.27 Absolutely and unfortunately I try to find 00:04:19.30\00:04:21.61 as much time during the days 00:04:21.64\00:04:23.03 I possibly can to get out there and stop doing that. 00:04:23.06\00:04:25.61 You bring up and interesting point this genetics here. 00:04:25.64\00:04:28.26 So in other words even if we do all the other things 00:04:28.29\00:04:31.09 we can do right, there's still this possibility, 00:04:31.12\00:04:33.48 this one in five that there is going 00:04:33.51\00:04:36.06 to be an event in our lives that has to do with our hearts. 00:04:36.09\00:04:39.25 Is there anything we can do about that event? 00:04:39.28\00:04:42.00 Yes, and that's what I'm saying, 00:04:42.03\00:04:43.40 there are certain things that can trigger bad genetics. 00:04:43.43\00:04:46.01 Stress can trigger bad genetics. 00:04:46.04\00:04:48.42 And now that they sequence the genome 00:04:48.45\00:04:51.31 we know all about these cells and proteins. 00:04:51.34\00:04:53.56 We're now learning about different triggers 00:04:53.59\00:04:55.56 that raise the risk of having a heart attack. 00:04:55.59\00:04:58.42 We know that there's cancer genes, 00:04:58.45\00:05:00.25 we know things like cigarettes 00:05:00.28\00:05:01.65 and certain chemical turned on genome 00:05:01.68\00:05:03.34 and predisposed us to cancer. 00:05:03.37\00:05:05.18 Well, in the future our genetics 00:05:05.21\00:05:06.79 we might be able to figure out which people have genes 00:05:06.82\00:05:09.20 and what are susceptible things that cause it? 00:05:09.23\00:05:11.90 But we know for sure that stress on the body 00:05:11.93\00:05:14.35 raises the risk of having a heart attack. 00:05:14.38\00:05:16.65 So when I talk about what causes a heart attack, 00:05:16.68\00:05:19.02 I say anything that stresses the body 00:05:19.05\00:05:21.52 can cause a heart attack. 00:05:21.55\00:05:22.92 And now, I'm going to go off the road a little bit, 00:05:22.95\00:05:25.93 think about it we're also originally 00:05:25.96\00:05:27.84 designed to worship our God. 00:05:27.87\00:05:30.36 When we don't do that, 00:05:30.39\00:05:31.76 that could raise our risk of having heart attack. 00:05:31.79\00:05:34.24 We were originally designed to love each other. 00:05:34.27\00:05:37.08 When we don't do that, we can raise 00:05:37.11\00:05:38.86 the risk of having heart attack. 00:05:38.89\00:05:40.49 We're originally designed to serve each other. 00:05:40.52\00:05:43.16 When we're selfish, we could raise 00:05:43.19\00:05:45.03 the chance of having heart attack. 00:05:45.06\00:05:47.07 Also we now are finding out that our brain. 00:05:47.10\00:05:49.66 Its important things we eat that can raise 00:05:49.69\00:05:51.50 the risk of having heart attack. 00:05:51.53\00:05:52.90 And there some great books out and there are some documentary, 00:05:52.93\00:05:55.63 'forks Over Knives', let us know 00:05:55.66\00:05:57.03 that the vegan diet helps keep us 00:05:57.06\00:05:58.70 at the lowest possible risk. 00:05:58.73\00:06:01.05 Dr. Esselstyn's did some great studies 00:06:01.08\00:06:03.26 about diet lowing the risk of heart attack. 00:06:03.29\00:06:05.55 While I'm saying in the future, 00:06:05.58\00:06:07.21 we're gonna find out that the brain 00:06:07.24\00:06:08.75 is just as important as what we eat. 00:06:08.78\00:06:10.87 Did you know that people that watch violent T.V, 00:06:10.90\00:06:13.88 people that watch pornography, people that worry have guilt 00:06:13.91\00:06:17.41 that raises their risk of having a heart attack 00:06:17.44\00:06:19.90 by increasing the stress chemicals in the body. 00:06:19.93\00:06:22.91 So it might be more dangerous to watch a violent T.V, 00:06:22.94\00:06:27.08 than to smoke a pack of cigarettes, 00:06:27.11\00:06:28.48 what it does chemically. 00:06:28.51\00:06:29.88 And if you go back at creation, 00:06:29.91\00:06:31.32 we were never designed for these things. 00:06:31.35\00:06:33.18 Again another stressor, now, 00:06:33.21\00:06:35.20 we're learning all the mind stressors. 00:06:35.23\00:06:37.20 Guilt for instance, we weren't designed to feel guilty. 00:06:37.23\00:06:40.24 We were designed to be un-guilty. 00:06:40.27\00:06:42.45 Yes. We were designed to have a loving God. 00:06:42.48\00:06:44.44 Now when we see God as a mean God 00:06:44.47\00:06:46.75 that could create stress on our body too. 00:06:46.78\00:06:49.41 So all these things raise 00:06:49.44\00:06:51.07 a chance of having a heart attack. 00:06:51.10\00:06:53.06 Now, let me tell you little bit about what a heart attack is. 00:06:53.09\00:06:55.39 Lot a people don't understand what a heart attack is. 00:06:55.42\00:06:57.61 But what a heart attack is the blood 00:06:57.64\00:06:59.91 doesn't get to the heart muscle and then it malfunctions. 00:06:59.94\00:07:04.30 It can cause dangerous rhythm. 00:07:04.33\00:07:06.64 It can cause a valve to malfunction. 00:07:06.67\00:07:09.27 The heart wall could break open, 00:07:09.30\00:07:11.32 but the most common thing we have 00:07:11.35\00:07:13.21 is a condition called arrhythmia. 00:07:13.24\00:07:15.72 Now, there's four major causes of heart attack. 00:07:15.75\00:07:19.16 Now you can have a heart attack with a completely normal artery 00:07:19.19\00:07:22.04 and I see you've got an artery there. Yes, I do. 00:07:22.07\00:07:24.08 I've a representation for an artery, 00:07:24.11\00:07:25.85 this is not a real one. Our's are really small. 00:07:25.88\00:07:28.05 You now, that would be an elephant artery. 00:07:28.08\00:07:32.26 No, I'm looking at this first artery and it looks pretty good, 00:07:32.29\00:07:34.86 there's lots of room through here. 00:07:34.89\00:07:36.26 Now, did you know, that you can have a heart attack 00:07:36.29\00:07:38.49 with completely normal artery, 00:07:38.52\00:07:40.50 especially if it does something called spasm. 00:07:40.53\00:07:43.35 The artery can just clamp down and then open up. 00:07:43.38\00:07:46.35 Like a hose a garden of hose. Yes, exactly. All right, okay. 00:07:46.38\00:07:49.21 Now what might cause that? 00:07:49.24\00:07:50.61 Well, there are certain drugs that can cause that, 00:07:50.64\00:07:52.95 one that causes that it's called cocaine 00:07:52.98\00:07:55.13 that can constrict an artery. Even an open artery? 00:07:55.16\00:07:57.61 Yes, that's completely normal. 00:07:57.64\00:07:59.06 If people are high up in altitude, hypoxia, 00:07:59.09\00:08:03.40 low oxygen can trigger that artery to spasm. 00:08:03.43\00:08:06.92 We also know that cigarettes sometime can trigger a spasm. 00:08:06.95\00:08:10.44 But there is a condition called the broken heart syndrome, 00:08:10.47\00:08:13.61 were you have extreme emotion, 00:08:13.64\00:08:15.51 extreme--like someone dies quickly 00:08:15.54\00:08:18.80 and all that adrenaline comes a massive amount of adrenaline 00:08:18.83\00:08:22.31 can cause that artery to spasm and then it opens up. 00:08:22.34\00:08:25.41 So when we see that the person is having a heart attack, 00:08:25.44\00:08:27.65 the symptoms of the heart attack, 00:08:27.68\00:08:29.33 chest pain, they can't breathe, pain in the neck 00:08:29.36\00:08:33.23 and then we go in and take pictures of the arteries, 00:08:33.26\00:08:35.25 and we find that the arteries is crystal clear. 00:08:35.28\00:08:37.39 Now, those don't happen very much. 00:08:37.42\00:08:39.54 Another type of heart attack is 00:08:39.57\00:08:41.21 when you have a plaque in your artery. Oh, oh, oh, oh. 00:08:41.24\00:08:43.19 I think that's represented here, 00:08:43.22\00:08:44.59 I'm beginning to see something building up right here. 00:08:44.62\00:08:47.93 That's a little plaque 00:08:47.96\00:08:49.37 and it can actually start in your youth now. Okay. 00:08:49.40\00:08:52.32 Making those fatty deposits that lipids, 00:08:52.35\00:08:54.83 that's cholesterol in the arteries 00:08:54.86\00:08:56.74 and through the years it can get more 00:08:56.77\00:08:58.93 and then this plaque can actually explode, 00:08:58.96\00:09:02.27 rupture suddenly. 00:09:02.30\00:09:03.67 Other words it's like a little pimple--Yes. 00:09:03.70\00:09:06.07 With contents that there is calcium 00:09:06.10\00:09:07.76 and there's stuff in there, right? 00:09:07.79\00:09:09.16 Let me, show me the next one. 00:09:09.19\00:09:10.56 Okay, here's the next one right here, 00:09:10.59\00:09:11.96 look at this, look at this. 00:09:11.99\00:09:13.36 Yeah, and that is a little bit more lipid 00:09:13.39\00:09:14.97 or cholesterol in the arteries 00:09:15.00\00:09:16.48 and we can see it building up on the wall 00:09:16.51\00:09:18.22 which is called endothelium. 00:09:18.25\00:09:20.20 There all these stresses can cause plaque to rupture 00:09:20.23\00:09:23.84 and when it ruptures it's like a pimple 00:09:23.87\00:09:25.50 and what happens if I cut you? 00:09:25.53\00:09:26.96 All of a sudden your body 00:09:26.99\00:09:28.36 would try to repair by clotting it off. 00:09:28.39\00:09:30.59 So we can clot off this artery and no blood goes to the heart. 00:09:30.62\00:09:34.16 Dangerous rhythms, dangerous blood flow, 00:09:34.19\00:09:36.91 dangerous malfunctions of the heart. 00:09:36.94\00:09:38.69 Half of all heart attacks come without warning. 00:09:38.72\00:09:41.86 So heart attack is really a hidden disease. 00:09:41.89\00:09:44.18 So people can be walking around in the audience today 00:09:44.21\00:09:46.98 and have this type of blockage and not even know it. 00:09:47.01\00:09:49.76 And the way we prevent that is again, 00:09:49.79\00:09:52.43 get back to all the things that stress our body 00:09:52.46\00:09:54.95 whether that be cholesterol or blood pressure or smoking 00:09:54.98\00:09:58.04 or extra weight can stress us, lack of sleep can stress us, 00:09:58.07\00:10:01.89 lack of water, we want to lower those stresses 00:10:01.92\00:10:04.51 so that plaque doesn't rupture. 00:10:04.54\00:10:06.48 I would have imagined that if you have a build up like this 00:10:06.51\00:10:08.86 in your body and then you have the stress of loosing someone, 00:10:08.89\00:10:12.98 then you have the stress of the tiger chasing you 00:10:13.01\00:10:15.20 and this--doesn't have as much room to constrict. 00:10:15.23\00:10:17.71 It's that much worse. Okay, got you, got you. 00:10:17.74\00:10:20.73 Now, the last type of heart attack 00:10:20.76\00:10:22.60 is the heart attack that you gradually build up cholesterol 00:10:22.63\00:10:25.63 and lipids in your body year after year after year. 00:10:25.66\00:10:28.74 That's pretty bad. You clog up the arteries, 00:10:28.77\00:10:30.44 and this is not only happening in the heart, Charles. 00:10:30.47\00:10:33.06 But this can be happening in the legs, 00:10:33.09\00:10:34.91 in the brain and the kidney arteries 00:10:34.94\00:10:36.80 and then it gets so filled up with plaque. 00:10:36.83\00:10:39.33 Usually a person has a symptom first 00:10:39.36\00:10:41.24 when they have this type of heart attack. 00:10:41.27\00:10:42.64 They'll notice whenever they do too much 00:10:42.67\00:10:44.35 something doesn't feel right, 00:10:44.38\00:10:45.75 because you're not getting enough blood out to the heart 00:10:45.78\00:10:48.39 and then it needs more blood when you're exercising. 00:10:48.42\00:10:50.54 So let's say you're walking up the hill, 00:10:50.57\00:10:52.30 or you know, grocery shopping 00:10:52.33\00:10:53.91 and you feel something doesn't feel right here 00:10:53.94\00:10:56.16 'cause you need more blood in your heart 00:10:56.19\00:10:57.56 and you stop and it goes away 00:10:57.59\00:10:59.71 and that's what we call angina. 00:10:59.74\00:11:02.24 And you start feeling that. Well, this could be a sign that 00:11:02.27\00:11:04.57 this is going on in the arteries of heart. 00:11:04.60\00:11:06.11 And if it's ignored, it could lead to a heart attack 00:11:06.14\00:11:10.45 and a heart attack is devastating 00:11:10.48\00:11:12.60 'cause even in America people still die all the time 00:11:12.63\00:11:15.52 from having a heart attack 00:11:15.55\00:11:17.09 and that symptom that might be anything like us. 00:11:17.12\00:11:19.57 Some people think its indigestion, 00:11:19.60\00:11:21.64 some people think it's a pain in the chest that won't go away, 00:11:21.67\00:11:24.27 to some women all they feel is shortness of breath 00:11:24.30\00:11:26.65 or extremely fatigue. 00:11:26.68\00:11:28.16 But what I tell when it comes to symptoms Charles 00:11:28.19\00:11:30.49 is anything above the waist that doesn't feel right, 00:11:30.52\00:11:34.53 they won't go away or even going up to the neck 00:11:34.56\00:11:36.95 or the back that could be a heart symptom. 00:11:36.98\00:11:39.45 So if someone's feeling a heart symptoms, 00:11:39.48\00:11:41.75 the best thing not to do is sit at home. 00:11:41.78\00:11:44.16 You want to get treatment right away 00:11:44.19\00:11:46.12 'cause we have some great modern medicine 00:11:46.15\00:11:47.92 that can open up these arteries, 00:11:47.95\00:11:49.64 that can help avoid this big heart attack 00:11:49.67\00:11:51.69 which could kill you 00:11:51.72\00:11:53.56 and then after we get over that. 00:11:53.59\00:11:55.83 Then we work at all the 'causes that might be causing. 00:11:55.86\00:11:58.60 We work on all the stress 00:11:58.63\00:12:00.00 so this might not ever happen to a person again. 00:12:00.03\00:12:02.40 Of course this brings us a question. 00:12:02.43\00:12:03.80 If by chance you get to this point 00:12:03.83\00:12:06.73 where you have this kind of build up. 00:12:06.76\00:12:08.79 Is there anything you can do 00:12:08.82\00:12:10.81 I mean medicine of course will fill in the blood so 00:12:10.84\00:12:14.03 it goes through there easier. 00:12:14.06\00:12:15.43 Is there something that you can do 00:12:15.46\00:12:17.01 that will help you get rid of this stuff. 00:12:17.04\00:12:19.24 Yes, in fact, we have a very famous president right now, 00:12:19.27\00:12:22.87 that's working on things. He's doing a lot of exercise, 00:12:22.90\00:12:26.12 he's on a vegan diet. 00:12:26.15\00:12:27.80 We have shown people that exercise, eat a good diet, 00:12:27.83\00:12:31.31 have fresh, fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains. 00:12:31.34\00:12:34.12 Keep their cholesterol very low. Sometimes even take a Statin, 00:12:34.15\00:12:37.63 that can actually regress the artery. Wow. 00:12:37.66\00:12:40.04 And another thing that we can do that means 00:12:40.07\00:12:41.69 the plaque gets less over time.Right. 00:12:41.72\00:12:43.62 And it's really up to your genetics 00:12:43.65\00:12:45.80 whether that's possible. 00:12:45.83\00:12:47.20 But another thing that we can do 00:12:47.23\00:12:48.60 when we exercise and do these things is we help grow new, 00:12:48.63\00:12:51.03 new arteries around. Okay. 00:12:51.06\00:12:53.12 So we have a great blood supply that goes through these. 00:12:53.15\00:12:55.64 So we can actually bypass this somehow. 00:12:55.67\00:12:57.24 Yeah, we can send extra blood to the areas of the heart. 00:12:57.27\00:12:59.62 But the point I want to make 00:12:59.65\00:13:01.02 is heart attacks is a serious things. 00:13:01.05\00:13:02.68 So if your having symptoms, you don't know 00:13:02.71\00:13:04.68 what is from above the waist up, you need to get help right way. 00:13:04.71\00:13:07.93 You might be having one of these four types of heart attacks. 00:13:07.96\00:13:10.51 This is when you need acute modern medicine right away, 00:13:10.54\00:13:13.65 and after that's taken care of then we can back up 00:13:13.68\00:13:15.89 and talk about what cause it to happen. 00:13:15.92\00:13:17.90 Oh, that is perfect, that is a good example 00:13:17.93\00:13:19.91 then of the modern medicine and the lifestyle 00:13:19.94\00:13:22.94 both of them are important and both of them have a place 00:13:22.97\00:13:25.30 and if you look like this 00:13:25.33\00:13:27.14 it might be time quickly for a little bit of both. 00:13:27.17\00:13:29.81 You might want to check that out. 00:13:29.84\00:13:31.25 We'll take a short break and when we come back 00:13:31.28\00:13:32.65 we're going to answer your questions 00:13:32.68\00:13:34.06 from the Heartwise ministries web site, 00:13:34.09\00:13:35.91 so stay right where you are. 00:13:35.94\00:13:37.31 You won't want to miss this. 00:13:37.34\00:13:39.48
