Okay. 00:00:30.57\00:00:32.93 Here are some questions, Dr Marcum, 00:00:32.94\00:00:34.71 from the heartwiseministries.org website. 00:00:34.72\00:00:38.49 This is what's--this is a dairy farmer in Wisconsin. 00:00:38.50\00:00:42.97 Okay. Here we go. 00:00:42.98\00:00:43.97 My bowels are always malfunctioning. Oh, dear. 00:00:43.98\00:00:46.86 Sometimes severe constipation, sometimes diarrhea, 00:00:46.87\00:00:49.79 sometimes pain after eating. 00:00:49.80\00:00:52.05 The GI doctors have no explanation 00:00:52.06\00:00:54.08 and have put me on Lomotil. Any thoughts? 00:00:54.09\00:00:57.53 Well, that's a great question. 00:00:57.54\00:00:59.59 Many people have problems with their bowels. 00:00:59.60\00:01:02.33 And, again, I would want to know 00:01:02.34\00:01:04.14 why the bowels are malfunctioning. 00:01:04.15\00:01:06.28 And evidently they've looked at all the intrinsic things 00:01:06.29\00:01:09.00 that we sometimes see. 00:01:09.01\00:01:10.00 They look for things like cancer and other bowel type pathology. 00:01:10.01\00:01:14.64 One of the things that's underestimated 00:01:14.65\00:01:16.61 that happens is the different foods we eat. 00:01:16.62\00:01:19.26 Everyone's heard about gluten insensitivity. 00:01:19.27\00:01:21.89 They've heard about that. 00:01:21.90\00:01:22.89 But in addition to that many people 00:01:22.90\00:01:24.91 don't have the enzymes that work with milk. Yeah. 00:01:24.92\00:01:28.90 They call that lactose intolerance. 00:01:28.91\00:01:31.09 And also many people can have milk or dairy allergies. 00:01:31.10\00:01:34.82 And when you put things in our body 00:01:34.83\00:01:36.35 that that really they can't handle the body 00:01:36.36\00:01:38.68 actually attacks it. It's a foreign substance. 00:01:38.69\00:01:40.84 A foreign substance. 00:01:40.85\00:01:41.84 You have really an immune like reaction 00:01:41.85\00:01:44.26 where the body attacks itself. 00:01:44.27\00:01:45.83 So the bowels do crazy things 00:01:45.84\00:01:47.53 when these substances are introduced. 00:01:47.54\00:01:49.06 I can't tell you how many people 00:01:49.07\00:01:50.37 I've seen improve their GI symptoms 00:01:50.38\00:01:52.50 once they eliminate dairy like a milk and cheese 00:01:52.51\00:01:55.65 from their diet. 00:01:55.66\00:01:56.70 Other things that can cause it is gluten. 00:01:56.71\00:01:58.66 But I've also seen a host of other chemicals 00:01:58.67\00:02:00.88 cause different people, these processed foods, 00:02:00.89\00:02:03.07 anything can actually serve as an antigen 00:02:03.08\00:02:05.50 and mess up with the bowels. Now I'm gonna go on-- 00:02:05.51\00:02:08.64 I'm gonna say you're asking 00:02:08.65\00:02:09.65 a dairy farmer in Wisconsin. Yeah. 00:02:09.66\00:02:11.84 And he's not gonna wanna hear this. I guess not. 00:02:11.85\00:02:14.31 But, you know, that's-- if he's having problems-- 00:02:14.32\00:02:16.95 health problems, he's not absorbing the way he is 00:02:16.96\00:02:19.83 and having these problems. 00:02:19.84\00:02:20.83 He might want to try to give up dairy products 00:02:20.84\00:02:23.46 to see if his symptoms might improve. 00:02:23.47\00:02:25.56 I can't tell you how many people I've seen improve their health 00:02:25.57\00:02:28.34 dramatically by giving up cheese and dairy products 00:02:28.35\00:02:31.20 and also making sure you're not gluten insensitive. 00:02:31.21\00:02:33.63 Yeah. All right. Well, there you go. 00:02:33.64\00:02:35.75 I hope that you will take these words to heart 00:02:35.76\00:02:39.90 and recognize that they were given in a great deal of love 00:02:39.91\00:02:42.78 but that maybe the issue for the dairy farmer-- 00:02:42.79\00:02:44.92 I just want-- we just want him to feel better. 00:02:44.93\00:02:46.94 Yeah. Truth is truth. It is what it is. Yeah. 00:02:46.95\00:02:48.65 We have to let it now but, you know, again we want to 00:02:48.66\00:02:50.79 wrap the truth in love. 00:02:50.80\00:02:52.12 And let people, you know, have that relationship with God 00:02:52.13\00:02:54.87 and let God help them have the power 00:02:54.88\00:02:56.83 to make the decisions they need. Okay. 00:02:56.84\00:02:58.53 Very good. All right. 00:02:58.54\00:03:00.03 Another question here from heartwiseministries.org. 00:03:00.04\00:03:03.29 Being a diabetic-- this is Roy in Massachusetts. 00:03:03.30\00:03:06.00 Being a diabetic I recently was put on medication. 00:03:06.01\00:03:09.10 My physician did not mention a diet. 00:03:09.11\00:03:12.21 Now which book would you recommend? 00:03:12.22\00:03:14.28 Well, of course, we know that book. Yeah. 00:03:14.29\00:03:15.47 I'm gonna recommend The Ultimate Prescription. 00:03:15.48\00:03:17.34 Here it is. Right there. 00:03:17.35\00:03:18.34 But, Roy, this is a very good question. 00:03:18.35\00:03:21.06 And from your statement, I couldn't tell 00:03:21.07\00:03:23.48 whether you were type 1 diabetic or type 2. 00:03:23.49\00:03:27.03 Type 1 is when you're born that way. 00:03:27.04\00:03:29.87 Type 2 usually we get it because we acquire it. 00:03:29.88\00:03:31.27 And insulin--and we heard of insulin resistance 00:03:31.28\00:03:35.20 some people cause it. 00:03:35.21\00:03:36.60 The number one cause of insulin resistance is, 00:03:36.61\00:03:39.36 of course, gaining extra weight. 00:03:39.37\00:03:41.46 I don't know if you have extra weight on you 00:03:41.47\00:03:43.14 but that could be a cause of why you're diabetic. 00:03:43.15\00:03:46.43 Unfortunately or fortunately, 00:03:46.44\00:03:48.58 more people don't understand diabetes well. 00:03:48.59\00:03:52.04 But the treatment for diabetes, 00:03:52.05\00:03:53.67 medicines help but it doesn't fix the prob. 00:03:53.68\00:03:55.82 I've never seen anyone cured of diabetes 00:03:55.83\00:03:57.98 by taking a medicine. Okay. Yeah. 00:03:57.99\00:03:59.84 But I've seen people cured up to 90% 00:03:59.85\00:04:02.45 by getting in a real strict diet 00:04:02.46\00:04:04.85 and an exercise program losing this extra weight. 00:04:04.86\00:04:08.26 A lot of people say that type 2 diabetes is a disease of fat. 00:04:08.27\00:04:12.63 Too much fat on people that changes the metabolism, 00:04:12.64\00:04:15.77 changes the insulin sensitivity. 00:04:15.78\00:04:17.90 So a couple things, 00:04:17.91\00:04:19.99 the medicine might help as a bridge 00:04:20.00\00:04:22.02 but I'll work on diet and exercise 00:04:22.03\00:04:24.81 and work with Roy real carefully, 00:04:24.82\00:04:26.37 loving him into this health. 00:04:26.38\00:04:27.92 It might be possible as your blood sugar, 00:04:27.93\00:04:29.83 your weight, and you increase your insulin ability, 00:04:29.84\00:04:32.32 in your body that you might be able to be taken off 00:04:32.33\00:04:34.71 some of these medicines. 00:04:34.72\00:04:35.86 All the medicines that are used to treat 00:04:35.87\00:04:38.68 diabetes have side effects. 00:04:38.69\00:04:41.30 And the dangerous side effects of diabetes' medicines, 00:04:41.31\00:04:43.73 let's say Roy is really sick. 00:04:43.74\00:04:46.01 He's throwing up and doing poorly. 00:04:46.02\00:04:48.86 He doesn't eat or drink for a while. 00:04:48.87\00:04:50.88 Well, his blood sugar could go dangerously low. 00:04:50.89\00:04:53.74 And we know that blood sugars low 00:04:53.75\00:04:55.11 can actually lead to comas. 00:04:55.12\00:04:57.29 Another thing that can happen if the organs malfunction that 00:04:57.30\00:05:01.25 can also change the metabolism of the diabetes' medicines. 00:05:01.26\00:05:04.37 Certain diabetes' medicines have to be monitored 00:05:04.38\00:05:06.68 to make sure they don't damage organs especially the liver. 00:05:06.69\00:05:09.76 So if he could be off the medicine 00:05:09.77\00:05:12.05 he certainly could. Now which book? 00:05:12.06\00:05:13.84 Now I talked about the book 00:05:13.85\00:05:15.17 that I've just written "The Ultimate Prescription" 00:05:15.18\00:05:17.41 because I think it gives a balance. 00:05:17.42\00:05:19.25 But that's not the only book. 00:05:19.26\00:05:20.63 There is many great book out there. 00:05:20.64\00:05:23.04 I want to send Roy to the Bible too. 00:05:23.05\00:05:25.47 The Bible has a great diet in the Garden of Eden, 00:05:25.48\00:05:28.37 fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains. 00:05:28.38\00:05:30.83 In fact, the story of Daniel. 00:05:30.84\00:05:32.91 Remember that story of Daniel? 00:05:32.92\00:05:34.49 That was put in the Bible for a reason. 00:05:34.50\00:05:36.32 These fellows, Charles, they were brought to a foreign land 00:05:36.33\00:05:39.31 and their diets were much different. 00:05:39.32\00:05:41.36 And these fellows said, "Listen, we want to eat 00:05:41.37\00:05:43.47 what our parents taught us to eat was the healthiest diet 00:05:43.48\00:05:45.91 which is pulse and water. Vegetables and water." 00:05:45.92\00:05:49.20 The fellows didn't want to go along with those 00:05:49.21\00:05:51.79 'cause they had to conform to everyone else. 00:05:51.80\00:05:53.37 "You gotta to be like everyone else. 00:05:53.38\00:05:54.50 This is our society. This is the best thing for you." 00:05:54.51\00:05:56.81 You heard that before, right? Absolutely. 00:05:56.82\00:05:58.77 Everyday on the television. 00:05:58.78\00:06:00.06 Yeah, well, it's not necessarily the best thing 00:06:00.07\00:06:01.93 for these fellows and they stood up 00:06:01.94\00:06:02.94 for what was right. 00:06:02.95\00:06:03.94 They stood up for truth as they knew it 00:06:03.95\00:06:05.60 what their mom and dad taught them. 00:06:05.61\00:06:07.79 And after a short period of time 00:06:07.80\00:06:09.49 their brains they were 10 times smarter than the king's men. 00:06:09.50\00:06:12.94 Now these were-- this story was put in the Bible 00:06:12.95\00:06:15.21 for a reason that God can be trusted, 00:06:15.22\00:06:17.88 He is true and it does matter 00:06:17.89\00:06:19.89 what we eat to how our body functions. 00:06:19.90\00:06:21.98 So I wanna encourage Roy to get back to the Bible 00:06:21.99\00:06:24.95 not only to get the power to make the changes 00:06:24.96\00:06:27.03 but to learn about the different diets. 00:06:27.04\00:06:28.85 There's tons of great diet books out there. 00:06:28.86\00:06:31.05 But the bottom-line is as we eat more fresh stuff 00:06:31.06\00:06:33.88 fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains, 00:06:33.89\00:06:35.46 decrease our calories. 00:06:35.47\00:06:37.00 Exercise, exercise is important too. 00:06:37.01\00:06:39.92 He might--Roy, you might be up to be off these medications. 00:06:39.93\00:06:43.04 Now you've used the word "Excess weight" 00:06:43.05\00:06:45.38 several times in this program and other programs. 00:06:45.39\00:06:48.08 You say, "You know, if you have excess weight" 00:06:48.09\00:06:50.95 what do you mean by excess weight? 00:06:50.96\00:06:52.35 Give us a description for that. 00:06:52.36\00:06:53.49 There is some fancy things that you can do 00:06:53.50\00:06:55.30 and they call body mass indexes. 00:06:55.31\00:06:57.34 And if you add your body mass index 00:06:57.35\00:06:59.64 and it's above a certain number, you're considered obese. 00:06:59.65\00:07:02.97 If it's above another number, you're considered overweight. 00:07:02.98\00:07:05.75 But what I tell people if you wanna do it 00:07:05.76\00:07:07.36 simple just take all your clothes off, 00:07:07.37\00:07:09.65 get naked in front of the mirror, 00:07:09.66\00:07:11.27 look at yourself and you see things hanging, 00:07:11.28\00:07:14.23 you probably need to lose a few. Okay. All right. 00:07:14.24\00:07:17.05 But if you want to, go to google it body mass index 00:07:17.06\00:07:20.43 and you can look that up yourself. 00:07:20.44\00:07:21.50 And it's different for different ages and different genders. 00:07:21.51\00:07:24.60 Body mass index. Okay. 00:07:24.61\00:07:27.16 All right. Here is Lorie. 00:07:27.17\00:07:28.58 It doesn't say where she is writing from. 00:07:28.59\00:07:30.13 But Lorie says, "I am in a doughnut hole." 00:07:30.14\00:07:34.08 I guess that means something to where we live. 00:07:34.09\00:07:36.91 Are generic medications as good as the real ones. 00:07:36.92\00:07:41.28 And what about over- the-counter medications? Yeah. 00:07:41.29\00:07:44.55 Well, let me talk-- some of you might not know 00:07:44.56\00:07:46.12 what a doughnut hole is, some of you might. 00:07:46.13\00:07:48.03 That's sort of a term we use in medicine 00:07:48.04\00:07:50.34 it's right the few years before--when you quit work 00:07:50.35\00:07:53.22 you no longer have insurance and it's the years right 00:07:53.23\00:07:56.16 before you get qualified for government insurance. 00:07:56.17\00:07:58.32 Okay. All right. 00:07:58.33\00:07:59.32 We call that the doughnut hole. 00:07:59.33\00:08:00.51 You're sort of unprotected at that point. Okay. 00:08:00.52\00:08:03.08 And, you know, so all the healthcare 00:08:03.09\00:08:05.54 becomes much more expensive at that time 00:08:05.55\00:08:07.55 'cause you don't have any insurance to help defray costs. 00:08:07.56\00:08:10.05 Healthcare as everyone knows is expensive. 00:08:10.06\00:08:12.60 The medicines, the treatments these are gigantic bills. 00:08:12.61\00:08:15.35 And that's why we have all these healthcare problems 00:08:15.36\00:08:17.84 that we have in our country now. 00:08:17.85\00:08:19.83 And part of the problem, Charles, regarding this is 00:08:19.84\00:08:22.12 we are not doing what's right personally. 00:08:22.13\00:08:24.44 We've sort of created a lot of the problems 00:08:24.45\00:08:26.57 by the way we've lived. 00:08:26.58\00:08:28.06 But she wants--you know, when people are 00:08:28.07\00:08:29.65 in the doughnut hole medications real ones, okay, 00:08:29.66\00:08:33.09 the brand names can be very expensive. 00:08:33.10\00:08:35.68 But most of the brand names now have generic equivalents 00:08:35.69\00:08:38.91 that are much cheaper. 00:08:38.92\00:08:40.28 Some only costing $4.00-$5.00 a month. 00:08:40.29\00:08:43.41 And the way it is when a medicine is released, 00:08:43.42\00:08:45.86 it's so expensive for them to develop the research 00:08:45.87\00:08:48.32 and development that there's a pattern 00:08:48.33\00:08:50.61 and they're protected from going generic 00:08:50.62\00:08:52.38 for a period of years depending on the medication. 00:08:52.39\00:08:54.59 They wanna get their money back. Right. 00:08:54.60\00:08:56.00 Now is there some danger to generics? 00:08:56.01\00:08:57.96 Yes, there is some dangers. 00:08:57.97\00:08:59.41 There's dangers to every medicine. 00:08:59.42\00:09:00.80 There's danger generic. 00:09:00.81\00:09:01.97 Sometimes, you know, there's counterfeit medications. 00:09:01.98\00:09:04.59 That's sometimes people aren't giving you 00:09:04.60\00:09:06.59 what they say they're giving you. 00:09:06.60\00:09:08.23 That's mainly seen in foreign countries. 00:09:08.24\00:09:10.34 We see a lot of counterfeit medicines. 00:09:10.35\00:09:12.77 Also they package these medicines 00:09:12.78\00:09:14.45 in different products and sometimes 00:09:14.46\00:09:16.55 the amount in the medicines in milligrams 00:09:16.56\00:09:19.01 can be either less or more. 00:09:19.02\00:09:20.63 For instance, I prescribed a medication called Coumadin. 00:09:20.64\00:09:23.69 That's a blood thinner. 00:09:23.70\00:09:25.22 And that medicine engineered Coumadin, 00:09:25.23\00:09:27.20 which is called warfarin could be a little bit 00:09:27.21\00:09:29.35 less or a little bit more. 00:09:29.36\00:09:31.19 Well, when I'm adjusting your blood 00:09:31.20\00:09:32.81 to prevent blood clots, which can cause strokes 00:09:32.82\00:09:35.27 or if the blood is too thin you could cause bleeding, 00:09:35.28\00:09:37.55 I don't wanna 20 or 30% air in a medicine. 00:09:37.56\00:09:40.41 I wanna exactly as much as in it. 00:09:40.42\00:09:42.39 So in this medicine our practice never uses generics. 00:09:42.40\00:09:45.87 There are some other medicines that are generic 00:09:45.88\00:09:47.65 that probably work okay, but the dose isn't quite as exact. 00:09:47.66\00:09:51.47 The medicine is not quite as perfect, 00:09:51.48\00:09:53.29 but the savings, so you have to balance 00:09:53.30\00:09:54.84 the risk of the generic medicine 00:09:54.85\00:09:56.81 versus the benefits of the saving to the wallet. 00:09:56.82\00:09:59.85 You know, and sometimes the wallet factor's significant. 00:09:59.86\00:10:01.81 Yes. Absolutely. 00:10:01.82\00:10:02.81 And, you know, I've had some people on, 00:10:02.82\00:10:04.49 you know, $5 and $600 a month in medication bills. 00:10:04.50\00:10:08.09 That's not too uncommon in my practice. 00:10:08.10\00:10:09.81 I've seen some people on as many 00:10:09.82\00:10:11.37 when they came in as many as 15 to 20 medications. 00:10:11.38\00:10:14.95 And you add up all the costs of that 00:10:14.96\00:10:16.71 and that can be prohibitive not to mention the costs 00:10:16.72\00:10:19.13 in healthcare in side-effects. 00:10:19.14\00:10:21.01 So back to this question here from Lorie, 00:10:21.02\00:10:24.30 you know, are the generic medicines is good, Lorie? 00:10:24.31\00:10:27.01 They're not quite as good 00:10:27.02\00:10:28.13 but in some cases they are acceptable. 00:10:28.14\00:10:30.11 This is a good one to review with your doctor 00:10:30.12\00:10:32.02 and ask him is this worth the benefit? 00:10:32.03\00:10:34.18 And these over-the-counter, 00:10:34.19\00:10:35.18 she asked about the over-the-counter medications. 00:10:35.19\00:10:37.21 Can they be trusted? 00:10:37.22\00:10:38.21 Are they what they say they are? 00:10:38.22\00:10:40.60 Over-the-counter medications can be very dangerous, Lorie. 00:10:40.61\00:10:44.08 And we see some that have been, you know, these ones 00:10:44.09\00:10:46.65 that have pseudoephedrine, which makes methamphetamines 00:10:46.66\00:10:50.02 that can cause dangerous heart rhythms 00:10:50.03\00:10:51.86 and all sorts of addiction problems. 00:10:51.87\00:10:53.33 They use it to make methamphetamines. 00:10:53.34\00:10:55.21 We see Tylenol. 00:10:55.22\00:10:56.72 Tylenol right now is a number one cause of liver failure. 00:10:56.73\00:10:59.60 Some people abuse Tylenol. 00:10:59.61\00:11:01.40 Some of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, 00:11:01.41\00:11:04.17 the number one cause of bleeding 00:11:04.18\00:11:05.42 ulcers is that medicines. 00:11:05.43\00:11:07.13 So these over-the-counters we have to be very careful with. 00:11:07.14\00:11:09.71 Not to mix and match. 00:11:09.72\00:11:11.31 And not to mix them with your other medications 00:11:11.32\00:11:13.16 that your doctor might be prescribing. 00:11:13.17\00:11:14.98 So you got to be very careful with over-the-counters. 00:11:14.99\00:11:17.09 You got to know what you're doing what these medicines. 00:11:17.10\00:11:19.04 Because we're talking about a very serious thing here. 00:11:19.05\00:11:21.79 We're talking about a lot of people who suffered greatly 00:11:21.80\00:11:24.73 because of the prescriptions that they're downing. 00:11:24.74\00:11:28.00 And because of their not understanding it 00:11:28.01\00:11:30.98 or misdiagnosed or misuse of it. 00:11:30.99\00:11:34.40 We've to be very careful with this. 00:11:34.41\00:11:35.40 So if you have to take a prescription-- 00:11:35.41\00:11:37.11 if you've to take a medicine, please spend a lot of time 00:11:37.12\00:11:39.87 with your doctor and make sure you understand 00:11:39.88\00:11:41.65 exactly what that doctor wants you to do 00:11:41.66\00:11:44.41 and how he wants you to do it 00:11:44.42\00:11:45.75 and when he wants you to do it. 00:11:45.76\00:11:46.97 And just really, really concentrate on that. 00:11:46.98\00:11:49.17 Because the results of not doing it right can take you out 00:11:49.18\00:11:53.79 and we don't want that to happen.
