Welcome back to the Ultimate Prescription. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 I'm your host, Nick Evenson. 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.07 And we are discussing food as medicine on today's program, 00:00:04.10\00:00:06.50 and specifically we're talking about mushrooms. 00:00:06.53\00:00:08.87 And Dr. Marcum, thank you for sharing, and bringing some white 00:00:08.90\00:00:11.71 mushrooms for us to look at, and discuss today. 00:00:11.74\00:00:14.08 Have you ever picked your own mushrooms? 00:00:14.11\00:00:16.98 Well, I've kicked mushrooms, but I've never gone out to 00:00:17.01\00:00:20.95 the woods and said, This is a white mushroom. 00:00:20.98\00:00:23.55 You love the way the texture... 00:00:23.59\00:00:25.49 I mean I just love the texture of mushrooms. 00:00:25.52\00:00:27.72 You've gone through the woods and kicked them? 00:00:27.76\00:00:29.19 I've kicked mushrooms. 00:00:29.22\00:00:30.56 You know, they feel so neat, you know? 00:00:30.59\00:00:34.30 But I've never just eaten one from the woods, 00:00:34.33\00:00:36.97 because I've been nervous about it. 00:00:37.00\00:00:38.33 Yep. Well, for good reason. 00:00:38.37\00:00:39.80 I actually was taking a class in outdoor education one time, 00:00:39.83\00:00:42.90 and we were on a road trip and stopped at a rest stop, 00:00:42.94\00:00:45.74 and walked into the woods just a little ways. 00:00:45.77\00:00:47.21 And a friend of mine, who's a naturalist, and really knows 00:00:47.24\00:00:49.34 what he's doing in the woods, picked a little mushroom off 00:00:49.38\00:00:52.15 the base of a tree and said, Here, taste this. 00:00:52.18\00:00:53.68 And I was a little reluctant, but everybody else was doing it, 00:00:53.72\00:00:55.75 so I said, Okay, it must be safe, so I tried a little bit. 00:00:55.78\00:00:57.75 And he said, It's called Chicken Foot. 00:00:57.79\00:00:59.49 And it actually tastes a little bit like chicken; 00:00:59.52\00:01:01.09 kind of the texture of it. 00:01:01.12\00:01:02.46 And it grew around the base of this tree. 00:01:02.49\00:01:04.03 And it was pretty neat. 00:01:04.06\00:01:05.46 It was kind of tasty. 00:01:05.49\00:01:06.83 It was a fun thing, but I think that's probably a pretty 00:01:06.86\00:01:09.40 dangerous thing to do if you don't know what you're 00:01:09.43\00:01:10.87 talking about, right? 00:01:10.90\00:01:12.23 I think so, because remember, there are poisonous mushrooms. 00:01:12.27\00:01:15.47 You know? Not everything in the plant kingdom 00:01:15.50\00:01:17.61 necessarily is good for us. 00:01:17.64\00:01:19.21 There's poisonous mushrooms. 00:01:19.24\00:01:20.74 And, unfortunately, there's mushrooms that have a chemical 00:01:20.78\00:01:24.35 called psilocybin mushrooms, and those are hallucinogens. 00:01:24.38\00:01:27.78 And actually people take that and it effects the brain 00:01:27.82\00:01:31.55 in a different way. 00:01:31.59\00:01:32.92 So the mushrooms do have chemistry that 00:01:32.95\00:01:35.22 effects the entire body. 00:01:35.26\00:01:36.59 The same with medications. 00:01:36.62\00:01:39.33 It effects all sorts of cells as well. 00:01:39.36\00:01:41.80 Well, God has put different things in these mushrooms 00:01:41.83\00:01:44.77 that can help us, you know. 00:01:44.80\00:01:46.33 And these are good mushrooms, because they help our immune 00:01:46.37\00:01:49.00 system; they have some trace elements. 00:01:49.04\00:01:51.11 And I was surprised. 00:01:51.14\00:01:52.47 You know, for years I was told, Well, mushrooms really are 00:01:52.51\00:01:55.68 sort of a neutral food that you eat. 00:01:55.71\00:01:57.88 You know it's sort of neutral. 00:01:57.91\00:01:59.25 But it does have some things that actually 00:01:59.28\00:02:00.62 can help you in it. 00:02:00.65\00:02:01.98 And one of the biggest breakthrough's is this 00:02:02.02\00:02:05.09 new type of sort of pseudo amino acid, an essential thing called 00:02:05.12\00:02:09.76 ergo Thiamine, which can help the energy systems of the cells, 00:02:09.79\00:02:13.43 which decreases cell death. 00:02:13.46\00:02:16.16 So that's very interesting. 00:02:16.20\00:02:17.90 We need these to help keep our cells alive, especially the 00:02:17.93\00:02:20.87 ones in the mitochondria, which is the energy storehouse. 00:02:20.90\00:02:24.14 So I wish I knew more about mushrooms. 00:02:24.17\00:02:27.28 I wish I could go out in the woods and say, Hey, I want to 00:02:27.31\00:02:29.21 eat that mushroom, and not be worried that it might 00:02:29.24\00:02:31.41 cause me to think funny. 00:02:31.45\00:02:32.78 Yeah, right, right. 00:02:32.81\00:02:34.15 You know, I was just reading a fact about mushrooms. 00:02:34.18\00:02:35.95 Many mushrooms grow towards the light, 00:02:35.98\00:02:38.59 just like a plant follows the sun. 00:02:38.62\00:02:41.09 But unlike plants, scientists do not yet know how mushrooms 00:02:41.12\00:02:44.66 use the sunlight; only that they do. 00:02:44.69\00:02:46.93 Well, you know, they don't have; they're not chlorophyll. 00:02:46.96\00:02:49.56 Yeah, there's no green in them, I'm sure. 00:02:49.60\00:02:50.93 But some of the mushrooms... 00:02:50.97\00:02:52.47 Remember we've talked about the nutrient value of pigments. 00:02:52.50\00:02:55.47 You know, some of the different things that are out there have 00:02:55.50\00:03:00.81 different pigments that have chemicals 00:03:00.84\00:03:02.38 in them that are helpful. Sure. 00:03:02.41\00:03:04.08 You know? And what color was your mushroom that you ate? 00:03:04.11\00:03:06.68 It was orange. Yeah, so that orange pigment, I would be very 00:03:06.72\00:03:09.68 interested in studying the chemical composition of that 00:03:09.72\00:03:13.09 pigment, and see if it has a valuable biologic effect. Yeah. 00:03:13.12\00:03:17.33 So I think the biochemistry of plants would be very 00:03:17.36\00:03:21.30 interesting to study. Yeah. 00:03:21.33\00:03:23.06 You know, I just wish we could have more 00:03:23.10\00:03:24.97 information about them. 00:03:25.00\00:03:26.33 And I'm continuing to dig and look through the research 00:03:26.37\00:03:28.04 that's done on the chemistry of different fruits, 00:03:28.07\00:03:31.21 vegetables, nuts, and grains. Yep. 00:03:31.24\00:03:32.77 Well, we've got a question that's come in from 00:03:32.81\00:03:34.54 our website, that's 00:03:34.58\00:03:35.91 You can go there and ask the doctor a question. 00:03:37.55\00:03:39.58 And this person writes and asks, I always get a cold 00:03:39.61\00:03:42.52 in the wintertime, and this lays me up every year. 00:03:42.55\00:03:45.05 What can I do to improve my immune function? 00:03:45.09\00:03:47.59 Yeah. Well, different things effect the 00:03:47.62\00:03:50.13 immune cells in the body. 00:03:50.16\00:03:51.49 And let's paint a big picture. 00:03:51.53\00:03:54.46 Anything that causes stress at any level is going to hurt 00:03:54.50\00:03:59.83 your immune system to some degree. 00:03:59.87\00:04:01.74 For instance, if you over exercise that can hurt 00:04:01.77\00:04:04.97 your immune system. 00:04:05.01\00:04:06.34 That stresses you out. 00:04:06.37\00:04:07.71 If you don't get enough sleep, that might stress you out, 00:04:07.74\00:04:10.41 and hurt your immune system. Right. 00:04:10.45\00:04:12.01 If you eat the wrong types of food, that might 00:04:12.05\00:04:14.62 stress your immune system. 00:04:14.65\00:04:15.98 Specifically we know that sugar, processed sugar is sort of 00:04:16.02\00:04:19.62 dampens our immune system. 00:04:19.65\00:04:21.19 So first of all you want to do things... 00:04:21.22\00:04:23.63 People that don't move around; we know that exercise 00:04:23.66\00:04:26.23 can help our immune system. 00:04:26.26\00:04:27.60 So we want to do things that enhance our immune system. 00:04:27.63\00:04:31.43 Okay? Now we've also learned that certain foods help us, 00:04:31.47\00:04:35.24 like a mushroom might help our immune system. Sure. 00:04:35.27\00:04:38.27 Different antioxidants might help our immune system 00:04:38.31\00:04:41.51 as well to function better. 00:04:41.54\00:04:42.98 Because it decreases this process called 00:04:43.01\00:04:45.25 oxidation in the body. 00:04:45.28\00:04:47.22 And if you take the... Right. 00:07:42.49\00:07:43.83 I'm surprised! I go to some people and they go, Wow! 00:07:43.86\00:07:47.06 I can feel better if I sleep more at night, or if I don't eat 00:07:47.10\00:07:50.77 this, or if I do... 00:07:50.80\00:07:52.13 They don't understand these things. 00:07:52.17\00:07:53.67 And just illuminating them with truth that God has given each 00:07:53.70\00:07:57.31 one of us, we can help move them not only to better health, 00:07:57.34\00:08:00.91 maybe come off of a prescription pill, treat a chronic disease, 00:08:00.94\00:08:04.48 but we could lead them to the Ultimate Prescription. 00:08:04.51\00:08:06.85 And that's what we're called to do is to spread the gospel 00:08:06.88\00:08:09.85 in whatever way God uses us. 00:08:09.88\00:08:11.95 And it might be something like talking to somebody. 00:08:11.99\00:08:15.36 It might be leading a Bible study. 00:08:15.39\00:08:17.06 It might be helping to spread the message in 00:08:17.13\00:08:19.36 whatever way that be. 00:08:19.39\00:08:20.73 It might be holding a camera. 00:08:20.76\00:08:22.36 It might be working in a control room to get this message out. 00:08:22.40\00:08:26.84 But this is a new way to evangelize. 00:08:26.87\00:08:29.57 And in the world we live in, God wants new ways to spread the 00:08:29.60\00:08:33.07 gospel message to everyone. 00:08:33.11\00:08:34.48 And it doesn't have to be complex, it can just be meeting 00:08:34.51\00:08:37.08 a need, introducing them to a relationship, and showing people 00:08:37.15\00:08:40.82 that it's not that hard to do, and it's possible. 00:08:40.85\00:08:43.89 God loves us; wants us to be with Him. 00:08:43.92\00:08:46.22 That's right.
