Do you ever have trouble sleeping at night? 00:00:16.41\00:00:18.78 If so, have you thought about how the food you eat could be 00:00:18.81\00:00:22.25 a contributing factor? 00:00:22.28\00:00:23.62 On the Ultimate Prescription today we're going to be 00:00:23.65\00:00:25.59 discussing food as medicine. 00:00:25.62\00:00:27.42 Stay with us, because we're going to start in just a moment. 00:00:27.46\00:00:30.33 I'm Dr. James Marcum. 00:00:31.03\00:00:32.76 Are you interested in discovering the reason why? 00:00:32.79\00:00:36.16 Do you want solutions to your health care problem? 00:00:36.20\00:00:38.90 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:00:38.93\00:00:41.90 Well, you're about to be given the Ultimate Prescription. 00:00:41.94\00:00:45.91 Hello, and thank you for joining us on today program, 00:00:48.61\00:00:50.41 the Ultimate Prescription. 00:00:50.45\00:00:51.78 I'm your host, Nick Evanson, and we're going to be 00:00:51.81\00:00:53.98 discussing food as medicine. 00:00:54.02\00:00:55.92 Dr. Marcum, welcome to the program, and thank you so much 00:00:55.95\00:00:58.65 for your sharing your expertise on how we can use better 00:00:58.69\00:01:01.42 nutrition to treat medical issues. 00:01:01.46\00:01:03.32 Yeah, this is a very important topic, because as time moves on 00:01:03.36\00:01:07.50 we're finding other ways besides prescription medications 00:01:07.53\00:01:11.07 to treat the body and change the chemistry, and also get at 00:01:11.10\00:01:14.70 the cause of disease rather than just treating symptoms. 00:01:14.74\00:01:17.94 And we found that in treating things with nutrition, 00:01:17.97\00:01:21.98 there's much less side effects, there's much less danger. 00:01:22.01\00:01:25.85 These foods are often things that we can incorporate 00:01:25.88\00:01:29.08 into our daily diet; great ways to change our physiology. 00:01:29.12\00:01:33.36 But remember, not all plants necessarily are good. 00:01:33.39\00:01:37.23 You know, some plants aren't so good, so we have to be careful. 00:01:37.26\00:01:39.69 You have to check with your doctor, do the due diligent. 00:01:39.73\00:01:42.83 And that's what we've tried to do here with this 00:01:42.86\00:01:45.00 series of programs. 00:01:45.03\00:01:46.37 We've gone through the literature and found which foods 00:01:46.40\00:01:48.94 can treat specific medical conditions which might help. 00:01:48.97\00:01:52.67 What have the studies shown? 00:01:52.71\00:01:54.14 And a lot of this research has been pulled by my colleagues 00:01:54.18\00:01:58.71 at NutritionFacts.org where they've looked at all the 00:01:58.75\00:02:02.12 studies that have been done. 00:02:02.15\00:02:03.49 They've sort of gone through them all for us, 00:02:03.52\00:02:05.82 and I've sort of collected that. 00:02:05.85\00:02:07.62 And we're talking about how we can apply it 00:02:07.66\00:02:09.36 to a patient's life. 00:02:09.39\00:02:10.73 Yeah, now food is medicine. 00:02:10.76\00:02:12.09 I'm sure in treating cardiology it's frequent that you have to 00:02:12.13\00:02:16.16 tell patients that they need to eat a little bit more of this, 00:02:16.20\00:02:18.73 a little bit less of this. 00:02:18.77\00:02:20.10 How does that go over? 00:02:20.14\00:02:21.57 Well, you know, it's been hard, and it's been a 00:02:21.60\00:02:24.67 learning experience. 00:02:24.71\00:02:26.04 And I've looked at the way I practiced the last 25 years, 00:02:26.07\00:02:29.94 and I've changed the way I approach people. 00:02:29.98\00:02:33.78 You know, some people can do everything at once. 00:02:33.82\00:02:37.35 And they know if they keep eating a certain way that it's 00:02:37.39\00:02:40.09 damaging their body; the fats filling up their arteries. 00:02:40.12\00:02:43.43 They have cancer. They're eating carcinogen type foods. 00:02:43.46\00:02:47.80 And they know that if they continue it 00:02:47.83\00:02:49.36 they're going to die. 00:02:49.40\00:02:50.73 So some people can change just like this, okay? 00:02:50.77\00:02:53.67 But food is such a big part of our culture. 00:02:53.70\00:02:56.81 It's such a... You know, it's how we're raised. 00:02:56.84\00:02:59.14 It's how we're growing up. 00:02:59.17\00:03:00.94 We see all these commercials. 00:03:00.98\00:03:03.45 It's a fast food type thing; it's easy. 00:03:03.48\00:03:06.25 Its appealing to our taste buds. 00:03:06.28\00:03:08.95 We can actually get addicted to food. Right. 00:03:08.98\00:03:12.35 And the food companies know this. 00:03:12.39\00:03:15.16 And all these factors go into this. 00:03:15.19\00:03:18.73 And we also, when I approach a patient, that we're asking them 00:03:18.76\00:03:21.46 to change, it also effects their belief systems. 00:03:21.50\00:03:23.80 You know, how do they believe me? 00:03:23.83\00:03:26.03 You know, they, Oh, this is what everyone says. 00:03:26.07\00:03:28.04 This must be good! Right. 00:03:28.07\00:03:29.77 So what I have to do first of all is a 00:03:29.80\00:03:32.17 little bit of education. 00:03:32.21\00:03:33.54 And I have to say, Well, you know, the way I approach it, 00:03:33.58\00:03:35.74 I have to give them some evidence based medicine. 00:03:35.78\00:03:38.98 That's what we try to do here. 00:03:39.01\00:03:40.35 And I say, Look at the world we live in. 00:03:40.38\00:03:42.62 You know, are we getting better? 00:03:42.65\00:03:44.35 You know, there's more cases of heart disease now, 00:03:44.39\00:03:46.96 more cancer than ever before, more diabetes, sleep apnea, 00:03:46.99\00:03:51.49 You know, people are not healthier. 00:03:51.53\00:03:53.73 And yet the prescription medications go up every year. 00:03:53.76\00:03:57.57 Our technology gets better every year. 00:03:57.60\00:04:00.44 You would think if we were solving problems, 00:04:00.47\00:04:03.34 as technology got better these disease rates, especially for 00:04:03.37\00:04:07.14 chronic disease, would get better. 00:04:07.18\00:04:09.18 So I sort of talk to them about that. 00:04:09.21\00:04:11.01 And then we go into, Well, what causes certain diseases? 00:04:11.05\00:04:13.88 Well, we know that certain diseases like diabetes, 00:04:13.92\00:04:17.39 extra weight, you know, extra fat in the body, 00:04:17.42\00:04:20.36 certain diseases like hypertension, which leads to 00:04:20.39\00:04:23.53 stroke and heart disease, and kidney disease, lots of sodium, 00:04:23.56\00:04:26.63 and processed foods, too much animal based products trigger 00:04:26.66\00:04:31.13 certain types of cancer, okay? 00:04:31.17\00:04:34.07 And it just wears in general. 00:04:34.10\00:04:35.44 It wears our bodies out. 00:04:35.47\00:04:37.17 So once people start to understand that they begin that 00:04:37.21\00:04:40.54 maybe the food we eat aren't the best things. 00:04:40.58\00:04:43.88 And then they start doing a little research. 00:04:43.91\00:04:46.01 We give them some websites, and they realize, Yeah, we're 00:04:46.05\00:04:48.38 putting a lot of chemicals, and preservatives, and, you know, 00:04:48.42\00:04:51.35 there's got to be a better way. 00:04:51.39\00:04:52.72 So I try to also incorporate God's way. 00:04:52.75\00:04:55.62 And I show, you know, God's original plan was lots of 00:04:55.66\00:04:58.09 fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains. 00:04:58.13\00:04:59.96 And, unfortunately, what we're doing to our food source might 00:05:00.00\00:05:03.10 not be the best, so learn about it. 00:05:03.13\00:05:05.13 And then, wherever they're at, I say, Well, listen, the first 00:05:05.17\00:05:08.64 place I want a person to start is in prayer. 00:05:08.67\00:05:11.97 Talk to God about it. 00:05:12.01\00:05:13.68 Give Him a part of your life, a part of your health. 00:05:13.71\00:05:16.64 And I explain how our health and our 00:05:16.68\00:05:19.25 spirituality go hand in hand. 00:05:19.28\00:05:21.78 The better we feel, the better our body is, the better we 00:05:21.82\00:05:25.05 communicate with God. 00:05:25.09\00:05:26.42 The better we communicate with God the more we learn these 00:05:26.45\00:05:28.92 things, and have the power to maybe make a change. 00:05:28.96\00:05:31.73 And then I don't try to do everything, okay? 00:05:31.76\00:05:34.36 And if I say, Well, let's just pick one thing that you can do 00:05:34.40\00:05:37.20 and pray about it, and see if it helps your body out. Right. 00:05:37.23\00:05:40.84 So we talk about some of the things that they love, 00:05:40.87\00:05:43.84 and things that they like, and things that they might not like. 00:05:43.87\00:05:46.41 And then we say, Well, why don't you do this first? 00:05:46.44\00:05:48.78 You know, why don't you try to substitute? 00:05:48.81\00:05:50.15 Maybe you could eat all the good things first, and it would... 00:05:50.18\00:05:52.81 And just eat enough bad stuff to be happy? Uh huh. 00:05:52.85\00:05:55.62 Let's eat early in the mornings so we're not so starved we make 00:05:55.65\00:05:59.32 the chemicals, Ghrelin and some of the leptons that make us not 00:05:59.35\00:06:02.49 able to make a good decision. 00:06:02.59\00:06:04.36 Let's try to find substitutes. 00:06:04.39\00:06:06.39 And it might take years, and years, and years to get a person 00:06:06.43\00:06:09.66 heading in the right direction. 00:06:09.70\00:06:11.13 And we don't want them to change because of guilt, or we don't 00:06:11.17\00:06:14.34 want them to feel pressure. 00:06:14.37\00:06:15.70 We want them to do it because God is changing their lives. 00:06:15.74\00:06:18.71 That they do it because they want to have a better 00:06:18.74\00:06:20.91 relationship with God. 00:06:20.94\00:06:22.28 They want to take care of this gift. 00:06:22.31\00:06:23.71 And we understand that we don't have to do everything at once. 00:06:23.75\00:06:26.61 We're a work in progress. That's right. 00:06:26.65\00:06:28.78 And even if we can't be perfect on food and everything, 00:06:28.82\00:06:31.12 as long as we have God in our lives, His grace makes up 00:06:31.15\00:06:35.02 for our weaknesses. 00:06:35.06\00:06:36.39 None of us are ever going to be perfect in health 00:06:36.42\00:06:38.09 about anything, okay? 00:06:38.13\00:06:39.86 But we can head in that direction with God's help. 00:06:39.89\00:06:42.63 So I just tried those things, and I pick at least one thing 00:06:42.66\00:06:45.60 a person can do to do better. 00:06:45.63\00:06:47.94 And I have some patients that the only single thing that they 00:06:47.97\00:06:50.27 can do is drink water. Yeah. 00:06:50.34\00:06:52.54 I have some that all they can do is eat breakfast. 00:06:52.57\00:06:55.08 I have some that all they can do is only eat greens once a day. 00:06:55.11\00:06:58.55 But once they start doing this, their physiology changes. 00:06:58.58\00:07:02.38 When they're working with God, God shows them ways, 00:07:02.42\00:07:04.92 and gives them more power, and before long I find out, 00:07:04.95\00:07:07.59 you know, they feel better. 00:07:07.62\00:07:09.02 And the people that I can get to make the big changes, 00:07:09.06\00:07:12.16 they feel better than they ever have. 00:07:12.19\00:07:14.86 They get off prescription medicines. 00:07:14.90\00:07:16.43 They have the chance to reverse or halt disease, diabetes, 00:07:16.46\00:07:20.17 lose weight, better inflammation, think better, 00:07:20.20\00:07:23.07 sleep better at night. 00:07:23.10\00:07:24.44 The list goes on and on. 00:07:24.47\00:07:25.84 But it's not so easy. 00:07:25.87\00:07:27.28 And I pray for them, too, that I reach them as well as I could. 00:07:27.31\00:07:32.05 But it's really God's power that gives them the ability to make 00:07:32.08\00:07:35.82 changes for the right reasons. 00:07:35.85\00:07:37.39 So that's my approach right now. 00:07:37.42\00:07:39.62 It hasn't always been that way. 00:07:39.65\00:07:41.62 Now, Nick, I have some patients that come, they can't walk 00:07:41.66\00:07:44.23 across the room, because they have angina. 00:07:44.26\00:07:46.33 They know if they don't make these changes now, 00:07:46.36\00:07:48.76 they're not going to live long. Right. 00:07:48.80\00:07:50.53 So they make changes very quickly. 00:07:50.57\00:07:52.53 I have some people that have had cancer, and they know that 00:07:52.57\00:07:56.00 the only way to keep, to lower the risk of cancer is to 00:07:56.04\00:07:58.61 change the way they eat. 00:07:58.64\00:07:59.97 So they can make changes right now. Yeah. 00:08:00.01\00:08:02.68 We have some that have some bad side effects on medications, 00:08:02.71\00:08:05.61 and sometimes when they're feeling bad they can 00:08:05.65\00:08:07.88 make changes quicker. 00:08:07.92\00:08:09.25 Some people have to stay alive to take care 00:08:09.28\00:08:11.49 of their loved ones. Right. 00:08:11.52\00:08:12.89 They seem to make changes quicker. 00:08:12.92\00:08:14.59 But I think the key, the approach is, I get them to 00:08:14.62\00:08:17.76 turn to Christ as not only someone to help them, 00:08:17.79\00:08:22.46 but to see the things that they need to do, and give them the 00:08:22.50\00:08:25.00 power to make things. 00:08:25.03\00:08:26.37 And try to just done one thing at a time. 00:08:26.40\00:08:28.40 Some people can't do everything at once. 00:08:28.44\00:08:30.64 And give them the important things. 00:08:30.67\00:08:32.47 And then as they do this we'll try to encourage them, 00:08:32.51\00:08:35.31 and bring on... And some times I can say, Well, why don't you 00:08:35.34\00:08:37.95 at good 80% of the time, and only eat bad 20% of the time? 00:08:37.98\00:08:41.62 Well, when people start eating good, after a while their 00:08:41.65\00:08:45.09 receptors in their brain change, and food tastes different 00:08:45.12\00:08:47.99 to them, and then they're able to make a change. 00:08:48.02\00:08:50.76 Sometimes I can say, Well, why don't you... 00:08:50.79\00:08:52.76 You know you like ice cream a lot. 00:08:52.79\00:08:54.30 Well, why don't you, instead of eating ice cream every night, 00:08:54.33\00:08:57.27 Right. Why don't you substitute it one night? 00:08:57.30\00:08:59.50 Eat berries with that, you know? 00:08:59.53\00:09:01.30 Well, why don't you, you say you like to eat chips, 00:09:01.34\00:09:04.07 and I used to be a big chip eater, Nick. I used to. 00:09:04.11\00:09:06.54 So what now? I loved to eat chips and dip stuff. 00:09:06.57\00:09:09.58 But now I'm trying to take my vegetables like celery, carrots, 00:09:09.61\00:09:14.75 and I'm try to dip it in something like tahini, 00:09:14.78\00:09:17.05 or hummus, or something like that, and find a substitute. 00:09:17.09\00:09:20.72 And praying that God will change my taste buds so I'll like 00:09:20.76\00:09:23.63 that even more. Right. 00:09:23.66\00:09:25.16 So that's sort of my general approach. 00:09:25.19\00:09:26.90 And then when I treat myself, I like to treat, you know, 00:09:26.93\00:09:29.10 put spices on things; trying to find substitutes that God's 00:09:29.13\00:09:32.53 given us that we have even more. 00:09:32.57\00:09:34.94 But that's the approach I take now. 00:09:34.97\00:09:37.11 Who knows what it will be in the future. 00:09:37.14\00:09:39.31 And each person, Nick, is an individual. 00:09:39.34\00:09:42.48 And not one program works for everybody, you know. 00:09:42.51\00:09:45.78 And you have to be flexible, because you don't want to 00:09:45.81\00:09:48.12 change them, you know, if their diet effects their belief system 00:09:48.15\00:09:51.62 that might hurt them, too. 00:09:51.65\00:09:53.39 So it's much more complicated by saying, 00:09:53.42\00:09:55.49 you need to do this, this, and this. 00:09:55.52\00:09:56.86 Here's why you need to do it. 00:09:56.89\00:09:58.23 It's working with people, loving them, not judging them, 00:09:58.26\00:10:01.16 working with their belief system, their cultures. 00:10:01.20\00:10:03.80 There's some parts of the world that don't have access 00:10:03.83\00:10:06.03 to healthy foods. Right. 00:10:06.07\00:10:07.54 You know, I had someone one time that all they had to eat 00:10:07.57\00:10:09.90 was a bad food, but I would rather have them eat that bad 00:10:09.94\00:10:12.91 food and stay alive, than have low blood sugar. 00:10:12.94\00:10:15.34 That's right. You make the best you can out of a situation here. 00:10:15.38\00:10:17.81 Exactly, and you don't beat yourself up, you know? 00:10:17.85\00:10:20.62 If you have one bad day, just try not to have two bad days. 00:10:20.65\00:10:23.89 Sure. You know, and try to let God work with you 00:10:23.92\00:10:26.12 in your nutrition, giving you the power to see things. 00:10:26.15\00:10:29.22 And that's what we're trying to do here is giving some people 00:10:29.26\00:10:31.26 some options where they can learn, and maybe make some 00:10:31.29\00:10:35.06 changes where they can feel better. 00:10:35.10\00:10:37.07 And that's why I've researched these different plants, 00:10:37.10\00:10:39.70 and different things that we can use, and maybe substitute some 00:10:39.73\00:10:42.34 of these for prescription medications. 00:10:42.37\00:10:44.17 Yeah. Well, let's talk about it here. 00:10:44.21\00:10:45.54 Today we've got sesame seeds, and we also have 00:10:45.57\00:10:48.48 some pumpkin seeds. 00:10:48.51\00:10:49.84 What are these good for? 00:10:49.88\00:10:51.31 Well, if you think about seeds, seeds are like power packed. 00:10:51.35\00:10:56.08 Because seeds grow into big plants. Right. 00:10:56.12\00:10:58.29 So there are very concentrated good things in seeds. 00:10:58.32\00:11:01.82 And we've been told about how God has given 00:11:01.86\00:11:03.96 us the seeds to eat. 00:11:03.99\00:11:05.33 And there's a sesame seed there. 00:11:05.36\00:11:07.73 And a lot of people can incorporate that. 00:11:07.76\00:11:09.76 You know, you can eat those, but they tend to be 00:11:09.80\00:11:11.63 salty a little bit. 00:11:11.67\00:11:13.00 But a lot of people incorporate those into baking. 00:11:13.03\00:11:15.80 You know, you can bake with this. Right. 00:11:15.84\00:11:18.31 They're a little nutty. 00:11:18.37\00:11:19.71 It's the main ingredient of a product we hear 00:11:19.74\00:11:22.78 about called tahini. 00:11:22.81\00:11:24.15 Have you ever had tahini? 00:11:24.18\00:11:25.51 You know, I think I have, but I can't recall 00:11:25.55\00:11:26.88 what it tastes like. 00:11:26.92\00:11:28.25 Did you know that that's sesame seeds? 00:11:28.28\00:11:29.62 Now one of the things that sesame seeds have that are 00:11:29.65\00:11:31.19 valuable, they have a lot of trace elements. 00:11:31.22\00:11:36.09 Okay, these are elements like copper; very high in copper. 00:11:36.12\00:11:40.03 Things like magnesium, phosphorus, iron, zinc; 00:11:40.06\00:11:44.83 different things like that have a lot of selenium in it. 00:11:44.90\00:11:48.10 And sesame, that has a chemical called sesamum, and those are a 00:11:48.14\00:11:53.31 type of chemical called lignins, okay? 00:11:53.34\00:11:55.91 And lignin's, that chemical, I wish I could have a lignin pill 00:11:55.94\00:11:59.41 that I could just give separately. Sure. 00:11:59.45\00:12:01.52 But there seems to be something special about it when a lignin 00:12:01.55\00:12:04.65 wrapped in a plant that it gets absorbed better. 00:12:04.69\00:12:08.39 And that's why, sometimes, people pull out the nutrients 00:12:08.42\00:12:11.49 and concentrate it. 00:12:11.53\00:12:12.86 Well, those as a supplement don't seem to work as well as 00:12:12.89\00:12:16.00 if you eat the whole food itself. Right. 00:12:16.03\00:12:18.07 So when we have these chemicals it always works in a delivery 00:12:18.10\00:12:21.57 system if you eat the food that it was packaged in. 00:12:21.60\00:12:24.27 Well lignin's, they have phytosterols. 00:12:24.31\00:12:26.61 And the phytosterols in the lignin's, they seem to lower 00:12:26.64\00:12:29.94 cholesterol, and they seem to also lower blood pressure. 00:12:29.98\00:12:33.95 And also it seems to help the liver to protect it from this 00:12:33.98\00:12:37.92 process called oxidation; the aging part of the liver. 00:12:37.95\00:12:41.06 You know, stress causes oxidation. 00:12:41.09\00:12:42.72 Different things can cause that. 00:12:42.76\00:12:44.36 For instance, copper, that's a trace element. 00:12:44.39\00:12:47.03 You've heard of copper, right? in pennies? Right. 00:12:47.06\00:12:49.70 But we need copper in our bodies. 00:12:49.73\00:12:51.57 And copper seems to help in some types of pain. 00:12:51.60\00:12:54.07 You know, for arthritic pains, for years we used to give people 00:12:54.10\00:12:57.54 gold, or trace elements seemed to help with 00:12:57.57\00:13:00.08 rheumatoid arthritis. 00:13:00.11\00:13:01.44 Magnesium, which we can get in sesame seeds, helps with asthma. 00:13:01.48\00:13:06.75 It helps with rhythm of the heart. 00:13:06.82\00:13:08.58 Lots of people come to me with palpitations. 00:13:08.62\00:13:10.99 And sometimes it's just because they don't have enough 00:13:11.02\00:13:12.89 magnesium in their diet. 00:13:12.92\00:13:14.36 Of course, magnesium helps lower blood pressure as well. 00:13:14.39\00:13:17.99 And it helps in some studies to lower migraine headaches. 00:13:18.03\00:13:21.56 Really? So just getting magnesium in the body can 00:13:21.60\00:13:23.93 help with a lot of things. 00:13:23.97\00:13:25.47 Now, so those are some of the good things about sesame seeds. 00:13:25.53\00:13:28.10 Now pumpkin seeds... Have you ever eaten pumpkin seeds much? 00:13:28.14\00:13:30.67 I have, you know. Sometimes they're packaged, 00:13:30.71\00:13:32.97 and they're a little bit salty. 00:13:33.01\00:13:34.34 I don't know that they're that way naturally, 00:13:34.38\00:13:35.71 but that's really pumpkin seeds. 00:13:35.74\00:13:38.25 Pumpkin seeds are again another seed that has lots of good 00:13:38.28\00:13:41.62 things that help us. 00:13:41.68\00:13:43.02 One of the trace elements that pumpkin seeds has in it is the 00:13:43.05\00:13:46.76 substance called zinc, okay? 00:13:46.79\00:13:48.69 Zinc is a very important chemical in our body that helps 00:13:48.72\00:13:52.26 our bones do better, helps us not to have as many fractures. 00:13:52.29\00:13:55.80 It improves our immune function, 00:13:55.83\00:13:57.73 and also helps our prostate. 00:13:57.77\00:14:00.20 In fact in the prostate in men, that's where they have the 00:14:00.24\00:14:03.27 highest zinc levels in the body. Really? 00:14:03.30\00:14:06.21 In the prostate; lots. 00:14:06.27\00:14:07.61 And so it's a very important trace element. 00:14:07.64\00:14:08.98 So if you run low on zinc in the body, you're not going to... 00:14:09.01\00:14:11.88 Your prostate's not going to work as well. 00:14:11.91\00:14:13.55 You're going to have a higher risk of broken bones. 00:14:13.62\00:14:16.05 Your immune system's going to go down. 00:14:16.08\00:14:17.75 It's also, these pumpkin seeds are a good source of vitamin E, 00:14:17.82\00:14:22.39 which helps the skin do better. 00:14:22.42\00:14:24.23 And remember, vitamins are important enzymes in our bodies. 00:14:24.26\00:14:28.00 It also helps, again, magnesium. 00:14:28.06\00:14:30.20 It helps all the things we talked about. 00:14:30.23\00:14:31.97 Pumpkin seeds also have Omega 3 healthy fat in them. Right. 00:14:32.00\00:14:35.50 And we've already talked about how the healthy fat helps brain 00:14:35.54\00:14:39.01 function, helps lots of the parts of our body. 00:14:39.04\00:14:40.91 But one of the things I wanted to talk about, and you alluded 00:14:40.98\00:14:43.75 to it in our opening, that pumpkin seeds help with the 00:14:43.78\00:14:47.58 substance called tryptophan in the body. 00:14:47.62\00:14:49.95 Right. Now tryptophan... I'm sure some of our viewers have 00:14:49.98\00:14:52.99 heard of that before. 00:14:53.02\00:14:54.36 That's usually associated with eating turkey at Thanksgiving, 00:14:54.39\00:14:56.73 and it makes you sleepy. 00:14:56.76\00:14:58.09 Is that right? Right, right. 00:14:58.13\00:14:59.46 But turkey's not the best place to get it necessarily. 00:14:59.49\00:15:01.46 It's not the only source, but you can get tryptophan from 00:15:01.63\00:15:04.20 pumpkin seeds, and in the body it turns it into serotonin, 00:15:04.23\00:15:08.04 and also it turns it into melatonin. 00:15:08.07\00:15:10.84 And melatonin helps as a sleep aid. 00:15:10.87\00:15:13.58 So if you're having problems sleeping, maybe you should 00:15:13.61\00:15:16.95 eat some seeds occasionally to see if it will help you 00:15:16.98\00:15:20.28 sleep better at night. 00:15:20.32\00:15:21.65 Now I wouldn't eat it right before I go to bed, 00:15:21.68\00:15:24.25 but I might eat it with my evening meal. 00:15:24.29\00:15:27.16 I might throw some pumpkin seeds in there; see if I can 00:15:27.19\00:15:29.92 increase my tryptophan, which is going to help brain function, 00:15:29.99\00:15:33.56 my serotonin, which might help depression. 00:15:33.60\00:15:36.13 The serotonin could get converted to melatonin, 00:15:36.16\00:15:38.77 which helps us sleep better. 00:15:38.80\00:15:40.50 So just having some seeds might help with sleep. 00:15:40.54\00:15:43.44 It's also been shown in a few studies, pumpkin seeds to have 00:15:43.51\00:15:46.68 anti-inflammatory effects. Okay. 00:15:46.74\00:15:48.74 They ran it head to head, a handful of pumpkin seeds, 00:15:49.14\00:15:52.18 with a medicine called Indocin, and they found that the pumpkin 00:15:52.21\00:15:56.45 seeds helped a lot with inflammation in the body. 00:15:56.48\00:15:58.99 So it helps a lot. Now a lot of people like to... 00:15:59.02\00:16:02.72 You know, you've heard of different types of 00:16:02.76\00:16:04.79 seeds being sprouted. 00:16:04.83\00:16:06.16 Have you heard of that? Uh huh. Okay. 00:16:06.19\00:16:08.13 You know, we hear about sprouting. 00:16:08.76\00:16:11.27 I found that sprouting, it also... 00:16:11.33\00:16:14.20 A lot of people like to do it. 00:16:14.24\00:16:15.77 And the sprouts are very healthy. 00:16:15.80\00:16:17.91 But in my experience, sprouts do take 00:16:17.94\00:16:20.01 a lot of time to do this. Right. 00:16:20.04\00:16:22.04 But sprouting seems to help a chemical called phytic acid 00:16:22.08\00:16:25.61 in the body, which broadens our nutrient 00:16:25.65\00:16:29.85 composition of these seeds. 00:16:29.88\00:16:31.29 So seeds have an abundant way of helping our 00:16:31.32\00:16:35.46 body in numerous ways: the trace elements, the lignin's, 00:16:35.52\00:16:40.23 which help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. 00:16:40.26\00:16:42.73 It might help us with the tryptophan levels, 00:16:42.76\00:16:45.43 which can help us sleep well. 00:16:45.47\00:16:46.87 It does a lot of good things. 00:16:46.94\00:16:48.27 These are just the things that the studies have shown. 00:16:48.30\00:16:50.54 It probably does a lot more good things. 00:16:50.57\00:16:52.57 And we have other seeds that you heard about. 00:16:52.64\00:16:54.64 You remember Chia seeds? Uh huh. 00:16:54.68\00:16:56.21 I like to put some Chia seeds on my oatmeal every day. Right. 00:16:56.24\00:16:59.55 A lot of other different seeds we can incorporate into our diet 00:16:59.61\00:17:03.25 to not only help our bodies do better, but also help specific 00:17:03.28\00:17:06.89 conditions we might get in trouble with. 00:17:06.92\00:17:08.72 Yeah. Well, it sounds like there's a lot of good reasons to 00:17:08.76\00:17:10.96 incorporate these seeds into our diet. 00:17:10.99\00:17:12.33 And we're going to do just that after the break here. 00:17:12.39\00:17:15.10 We're going to look at some more ways to incorporate sesame seeds 00:17:15.13\00:17:18.30 and pumpkin seeds into our diet. 00:17:18.33\00:17:19.67 So stay with us. The Ultimate Prescription 00:17:19.70\00:17:21.20 returns in just a moment. 00:17:21.24\00:17:22.57
