Welcome back. You're watching the Ultimate Prescription. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.86 I'm your host, Nick Evenson, here with Dr. James Marcum, 00:00:02.90\00:00:05.53 and we're discussing food as medicine. 00:00:05.57\00:00:07.14 And more specifically on today's program, which is our 100th 00:00:07.17\00:00:10.21 program of Ultimate Prescription, 00:00:10.24\00:00:11.84 we're talking about beets and how they have some fantastic 00:00:11.87\00:00:16.18 medicinal properties, and how they can help us 00:00:16.21\00:00:18.08 live as God intended. 00:00:18.11\00:00:20.25 Now I wouldn't say beets are the ultimate prescription. 00:00:20.28\00:00:24.29 In our study that have been done, both in hypertension, 00:00:24.32\00:00:28.12 and in the British Health Foundation and others, 00:00:28.16\00:00:30.69 beets are a treatment especially for blood pressure. Right. 00:00:30.73\00:00:34.26 It might be used for trace elements. 00:00:34.30\00:00:36.13 And I guess the next time you and Leslie have a dinner party, 00:00:36.16\00:00:39.60 you can tell everyone, We're going to be serving beets. 00:00:39.63\00:00:42.34 Come on over! Maybe so. 00:00:42.37\00:00:44.07 I don't know. We don't eat beets too often. 00:00:44.11\00:00:46.04 Well, you could do great. 00:00:46.07\00:00:47.41 You could have beet juice. 00:00:47.44\00:00:48.78 You could have a beet salad. Yep. 00:00:48.81\00:00:50.41 And you can have a beet entree. 00:00:50.45\00:00:52.31 And we could teach you how to make some beet desserts. 00:00:52.35\00:00:55.75 You can have a... Oh, that would be great! 00:00:55.78\00:00:57.42 That sounds like a good challenge. 00:00:57.45\00:00:58.79 People would love it, love it, they would love it. 00:00:58.82\00:01:00.76 But, you know what, this is our hundredth program on beets. 00:01:00.79\00:01:03.83 On the Ultimate Prescription, not on beets. 00:01:03.86\00:01:05.83 Not on beets, but... No. 00:01:05.86\00:01:07.20 Yeah, we are focusing on beets today, right. 00:01:07.23\00:01:09.06 Focus on beets... But I want to thank everyone that's been 00:01:09.13\00:01:11.83 involved in this program through the years. 00:01:11.87\00:01:13.84 You know, a lot of people don't see all the people involved, 00:01:13.90\00:01:16.77 but we have people in the control room that are doing 00:01:16.81\00:01:19.67 all sorts of neat things, much more hard than 00:01:19.71\00:01:22.68 what we do out here. Sure, yep. 00:01:22.71\00:01:24.08 We have people running the cameras, and the jibs, 00:01:24.11\00:01:26.55 and directors, and people that do the sound, and graphics. 00:01:26.61\00:01:30.25 And Kristina who helped things. 00:01:30.29\00:01:31.82 So there's lots of people that help to bring this message about 00:01:31.85\00:01:35.72 the Ultimate Prescription to people. 00:01:35.79\00:01:38.43 And the Ultimate Prescription is not a beet is it, Nick? 00:01:38.49\00:01:41.16 No, definitely not. 00:01:41.20\00:01:42.53 No, the Ultimate Prescription that we want to focus on, 00:01:42.56\00:01:45.30 and everyone that makes this program is that relationship, 00:01:45.33\00:01:48.60 that unique relationship that we can have with our Savior. 00:01:48.64\00:01:51.84 Uh huh. That's the saving relationship. 00:01:51.87\00:01:54.08 That's what really heals people. Uh huh. 00:01:54.11\00:01:56.24 And if we can make this program, and people start thinking about 00:01:56.28\00:01:59.01 this relationship and give their hearts to Christ, 00:01:59.05\00:02:01.82 and renew themselves every day, that makes it all worthwhile. 00:02:01.85\00:02:06.25 Everyone that's worked so hard on these 100 episodes, 00:02:06.29\00:02:08.59 that's what it's all about. 00:02:08.62\00:02:10.06 And that's what makes us a little bit different than other 00:02:10.13\00:02:12.19 health programs, you know. 00:02:12.23\00:02:13.56 Other health programs might focus on the technical parts 00:02:13.60\00:02:17.10 of it, or the acute care, or some focus on the nutrition, 00:02:17.13\00:02:21.47 but we like to focus on the relationship with Christ. 00:02:21.50\00:02:25.21 Because that's really where the healing occurs. 00:02:25.24\00:02:27.71 Yeah. You mentioned earlier about healing beliefs. Yes. 00:02:27.74\00:02:30.81 You know in the Scriptures it tells us that God is going to 00:02:30.85\00:02:32.98 heal us and make us whole. 00:02:33.01\00:02:34.35 And we need to really believe that. 00:02:34.38\00:02:35.78 Whosoever believes in Me shall have everlasting life. 00:02:35.82\00:02:39.15 That is the Ultimate Prescription, 00:02:39.19\00:02:40.96 and that's what this program's all about. 00:02:40.99\00:02:43.43 Beets are a prescription. That's right. 00:02:43.46\00:02:45.79 Beets are not the Ultimate Prescription. That's right. 00:02:45.86\00:02:47.80 Not the most important anyway. 00:02:47.86\00:02:49.20 Some people don't like beets, you know? Yeah. 00:02:49.23\00:02:50.63 My son does the beet juice thing, but I don't think 00:02:50.67\00:02:53.60 he really likes it. 00:02:53.64\00:02:54.97 I sort of make him drink it. 00:02:55.00\00:02:56.34 He's sixteen years old. 00:02:56.37\00:02:57.71 And I said, Jake, it's going to make you swim faster. 00:02:57.74\00:02:59.91 So he gulps it down, but I don't think... 00:02:59.94\00:03:02.01 He threw up once when he ate it. 00:03:02.04\00:03:03.48 But I think he believed it wasn't going to be good, 00:03:04.41\00:03:06.75 so, you know, that self believing. 00:03:06.78\00:03:08.45 If it's not good, it's going to taste good, 00:03:08.48\00:03:09.82 it's going to make me sick. 00:03:09.85\00:03:11.19 So I think part of it was the belief that he 00:03:11.22\00:03:12.55 thought it wasn't good. 00:03:12.59\00:03:14.09 If I'd have put it in something else he might 00:03:14.12\00:03:16.36 have liked it more, so... 00:03:16.39\00:03:17.73 But I did the beet juice myself a bit, but I'm going to try to 00:03:17.76\00:03:21.16 start incorporating more whole beets rather 00:03:21.20\00:03:23.00 than just the juicing. 00:03:23.03\00:03:24.37 Try that, and I want you to have... 00:03:24.40\00:03:25.73 You will be a crowd pleaser if you have a whole beet 00:03:25.77\00:03:28.94 dinner party at your house. 00:03:29.00\00:03:30.34 A beet bean dinner party? 00:03:30.37\00:03:31.71 Alright, challenge accepted. 00:03:31.74\00:03:33.07 We're going to do it. 00:03:33.11\00:03:34.44 Do that for your friends. 00:03:34.48\00:03:35.81 Have them come over some Saturday night, and you have the 00:03:35.84\00:03:37.18 full beet, beet thing, and they'll be happy. 00:03:37.21\00:03:39.18 They'll lower their blood pressure. 00:03:39.21\00:03:40.55 They'll make some nitrates. 00:03:40.58\00:03:42.18 See how it... Let me know how it goes. 00:03:42.22\00:03:44.02 Alright. You know you just mentioned blood pressure. 00:03:44.05\00:03:45.55 And we have a question that just came in. 00:03:45.59\00:03:47.92 Someone's asking, What are some foods that 00:03:47.96\00:03:50.26 lower my blood pressure? 00:03:50.29\00:03:51.69 This is people who write in to our website at 00:03:51.73\00:03:53.53 There's an Ask the Doctor form there. 00:03:54.96\00:03:56.50 So you can contact us that way if you have a question. 00:03:56.53\00:03:58.70 But what are some foods that help with blood pressure? 00:03:58.73\00:04:00.84 Well, before I do that, a lot of people really don't 00:04:00.87\00:04:03.41 understand blood pressure. 00:04:03.44\00:04:05.11 So I'm going to talk a little bit about 00:04:05.14\00:04:06.57 what blood pressure is. 00:04:06.61\00:04:07.94 Blood pressure is when the pressure inside our blood 00:04:07.98\00:04:10.05 vessels is higher than normal. 00:04:10.08\00:04:11.65 Okay. Okay. So what's normal? 00:04:11.68\00:04:13.21 You know, number, normal, once we start getting above 130. 00:04:13.25\00:04:17.29 They call that pre-diabetic. 00:04:17.32\00:04:18.95 Above 140 that's... I mean pre-diabetic, pre-hypertensive. 00:04:18.99\00:04:22.52 But above 140, 150 it's starting to get higher. Okay? 00:04:22.59\00:04:25.63 And if it goes high for long periods of time, it damages the 00:04:25.66\00:04:29.20 blood vessel, you know? 00:04:29.23\00:04:30.57 And, for instance, weight lifters, 00:04:30.60\00:04:31.97 you know, when they do all that grunting. 00:04:32.00\00:04:33.74 Their blood pressure goes really high. 00:04:33.80\00:04:35.47 Long distance runners; sometimes if they're sprinting, 00:04:35.50\00:04:38.67 their blood pressure goes up for short periods of time. 00:04:38.71\00:04:40.54 It damages the blood vessels. 00:04:40.58\00:04:42.31 So any time the blood pressure is up day in and day out, 00:04:42.34\00:04:46.08 we call that hypertension. Right. 00:04:46.11\00:04:48.08 And when a person comes in with hypertension, I think of, Well, 00:04:48.12\00:04:51.75 that's more of a cause. 00:04:51.79\00:04:53.29 What causes it? Okay? 00:04:53.32\00:04:54.76 I don't think about, It's a symptom. 00:04:54.79\00:04:56.96 It's the symptom of a stressor. Right. 00:04:56.99\00:04:59.09 And the most common ones is the people's diet. 00:04:59.16\00:05:01.20 They eat foods that cause high blood pressure. 00:05:01.23\00:05:03.23 Foods high in fat, high in sodium, that's up there. 00:05:03.26\00:05:06.60 Some people carry a lot of weight and don't exercise. 00:05:06.63\00:05:09.90 That can cause it. 00:05:09.94\00:05:11.27 Some people are stressed out all the time. 00:05:11.31\00:05:14.61 That can cause high blood pressure. 00:05:14.64\00:05:16.11 And then there's medical causes that cause it. 00:05:16.14\00:05:19.15 So, like high blood pressure can be triggered by sleep apnea. 00:05:19.18\00:05:23.05 People don't sleep good at night. 00:05:23.08\00:05:24.75 They quit breathing. 00:05:24.79\00:05:26.12 They breathe like this... 00:05:26.15\00:05:28.52 They breathe like that. 00:05:28.56\00:05:30.96 So they don't get good oxygen. 00:05:30.99\00:05:32.33 Right, they don't get good oxygen. 00:05:32.36\00:05:33.70 When oxygen goes down your body makes 00:05:33.73\00:05:35.06 alarms to wake you up. 00:05:35.10\00:05:36.87 You're in an emergency state so you make adrenalin, 00:05:36.90\00:05:39.63 and cortisol, and both those raise your blood pressure. 00:05:39.67\00:05:41.87 You know, it's just kind of funny to watch you do that. 00:05:41.90\00:05:43.97 But it's not a funny condition if that's the future.. 00:05:44.01\00:05:46.01 You get tired and you wear out. 00:05:46.07\00:05:47.41 It's a stressor. It raises your blood pressure. 00:05:47.44\00:05:49.18 Thyroid disease, kidney disease, different medical conditions can 00:05:49.21\00:05:53.31 raise your blood pressure. 00:05:53.35\00:05:54.68 Even certain medicines can raise your blood pressure. 00:05:54.72\00:05:57.09 So anyway, once a person has high blood pressure, 00:05:57.12\00:05:59.92 the key is to check it at home where they're nice and relaxed. 00:05:59.95\00:06:02.62 Because some people just have it because they get nervous 00:06:02.66\00:06:04.73 in the doctor's office. 00:06:04.76\00:06:06.09 We call that white coat hypertension. Right. 00:06:06.13\00:06:08.66 It's not really. It's they just get scared. 00:06:08.70\00:06:10.47 So you have some deep breaths, take it with the 00:06:10.50\00:06:12.53 appropriate sized cuff. 00:06:12.57\00:06:13.90 If it's high every single time, then see if you can find 00:06:13.94\00:06:17.17 out the reason why. 00:06:17.21\00:06:18.54 So some people's blood pressure will come down just by eating 00:06:18.57\00:06:21.01 less of the bad foods, the salty foods. 00:06:21.04\00:06:23.35 Some people will by exercise. 00:06:23.38\00:06:24.71 Some people have a medical... 00:06:24.75\00:06:26.08 But let's say you look at everything, 00:06:26.11\00:06:27.62 That no one can find it, and it's still high, okay? 00:06:27.65\00:06:30.09 Sometimes people can go to medications. 00:06:30.52\00:06:33.05 But we've learned that there's foods, and it seems like we have 00:06:33.09\00:06:35.82 proof, and I'm going to give the ones that have the 00:06:35.86\00:06:37.63 studies on it first. Okay. 00:06:37.66\00:06:39.29 But there's also other inductive reasoning that we can show that 00:06:39.33\00:06:43.03 other foods would lower it. 00:06:43.06\00:06:44.40 So we've talked about beets. Right. 00:06:44.43\00:06:46.37 Okay? We've also talked about hibiscus. 00:06:46.40\00:06:49.47 There've been studies with hibiscus that shows it 00:06:49.50\00:06:51.61 lowers blood pressure. 00:06:51.64\00:06:52.97 Greens, because it has nitrates lower blood pressure. 00:06:53.01\00:06:57.05 Flax has been shown to lower blood pressure. 00:06:57.08\00:07:00.65 Also different things like different fruits can sometimes 00:07:00.68\00:07:05.75 lower it a little bit. 00:07:05.79\00:07:07.12 But if you think about it, a lot of the foods that have nitrates 00:07:07.16\00:07:12.03 in them should be able to lower blood pressure, too, 00:07:12.06\00:07:14.53 even if the studies haven't been done. 00:07:14.56\00:07:16.16 So anything like the green foods that we talked about: 00:07:16.20\00:07:19.37 the arugula, the rhubarb, the cilantro, the leaf lettuce, 00:07:19.43\00:07:22.50 the greens; all of those that may have nitrates in them should 00:07:22.57\00:07:26.41 be able to help lower the blood pressure, too. Right. 00:07:26.44\00:07:29.64 Now some people that start eating more plants lower their 00:07:29.68\00:07:32.65 blood pressure, not only because of the plants, but they quit 00:07:32.68\00:07:35.75 eating all the other stuff that makes the blood pressure go up. 00:07:35.78\00:07:38.85 They fill upon the good stuff, and therefore they eat 00:07:38.89\00:07:40.56 less of the bad stuff. 00:07:40.62\00:07:41.96 Yes, and you know, things like salty foods, 00:07:41.99\00:07:44.99 and some of the processed foods. 00:07:45.03\00:07:47.50 All that stuff. And people don't realize it, but in some meat 00:07:47.53\00:07:50.50 products, they actually inject salt to make it more puffy, 00:07:50.53\00:07:54.74 and to keep it preserved. 00:07:54.77\00:07:56.10 You know, that's how people preserved things through the 00:07:56.14\00:07:58.07 ages is they put salt in it to preserve it. 00:07:58.11\00:08:00.68 Well, salt also gets in our body; we take too much salt, 00:08:00.71\00:08:04.08 our blood pressure comes up. 00:08:04.11\00:08:05.45 So I hope that answers the blood pressure question. 00:08:05.65\00:08:08.28 It's more complicated than just taking a beet to lower 00:08:08.32\00:08:14.39 the blood pressure. 00:08:14.42\00:08:15.76 You want to know why the blood pressure's caused, 00:08:15.79\00:08:17.19 look at all your options. 00:08:17.23\00:08:18.56 If you can get at the cause, then maybe you don't have to 00:08:18.59\00:08:21.13 eat as many beets, or whatever way you and your physician 00:08:21.16\00:08:23.73 decide to treat your blood pressure. 00:08:23.77\00:08:25.43 But blood pressure over long term is a chronic disease, 00:08:25.47\00:08:29.00 and it can damage your heart, it can damage your blood vessels, 00:08:29.04\00:08:31.81 it can damage your kidneys, it can damage your brain artery. 00:08:31.84\00:08:34.58 So we want to bring that blood pressure down. 00:08:34.61\00:08:36.85 Sounds like a good... I like the idea of eating the good stuff; 00:08:36.88\00:08:40.78 filling up on the good stuff, so you don't need, 00:08:40.82\00:08:43.15 or have the hunger for the bad stuff. 00:08:43.18\00:08:44.55 But if I can get people to eat more plants, exercise, 00:08:44.59\00:08:47.62 keep the stress down, deep breathing, usually their blood 00:08:47.66\00:08:50.63 pressure comes down pretty easily. 00:08:50.66\00:08:52.39 Well, we're going to take a quick look at a 00:08:52.43\00:08:54.03 Biblical Prescription for Life, and then we're going to 00:08:54.06\00:08:56.36 wrap up after that. 00:08:56.40\00:08:57.73 I'm Dr. James Marcum with your Biblical Prescription for Life. 00:09:00.37\00:09:04.47 A patient came to the office the other day having quite a bit of 00:09:04.51\00:09:08.54 pain; already on two pain medications. 00:09:08.58\00:09:11.68 I recommended this Biblical Prescription from 00:09:11.71\00:09:14.92 Did you know that when we're laughing, when we're happy, 00:09:21.32\00:09:24.16 and when we're joking around, and we're feeling good, 00:09:24.19\00:09:26.36 it makes a chemical in our body go up called endorphins. 00:09:26.39\00:09:30.03 Endorphins are very helpful in fighting pain. 00:09:30.07\00:09:33.20 Endorphins also help lower stress chemistry, 00:09:33.23\00:09:36.34 and just makes us feel good. 00:09:36.37\00:09:38.04 So by laughing, and being happy, and joking guess what? 00:09:38.07\00:09:41.64 You increase your endorphins, and lower your pain. 00:09:41.68\00:09:44.81 This Biblical Prescription was given to my patient, 00:09:44.85\00:09:47.88 and guess what?
