Welcome back to the Ultimate Prescription. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.83 I'm your host, Nick Evenson, here with Dr. James Marcum. 00:00:02.86\00:00:05.23 And today we are talking about food as medicine. 00:00:05.27\00:00:07.90 Specifically we've been talking about hibiscus, and beverages, 00:00:07.94\00:00:11.94 and hydration, and that kind of thing. 00:00:11.97\00:00:13.31 And, Dr. Marcum, what else do we need to know about drinking 00:00:13.34\00:00:16.31 beverages that have healing properties? 00:00:16.34\00:00:18.38 Well, you know, we've talked about hibiscus. 00:00:18.41\00:00:23.39 And I like this study because they compared it 00:00:23.42\00:00:25.89 directly with the pill. Yeah. 00:00:25.92\00:00:27.92 And it showed it's just as good. 00:00:27.96\00:00:29.29 I'm drinking some tea here today, too. 00:00:29.32\00:00:31.49 And I like it because there's chemicals in that help my body. 00:00:31.53\00:00:36.70 And there's numerous studies on different teas out there; 00:00:36.73\00:00:39.73 none quite as good as the one on hibiscus. 00:00:39.77\00:00:42.50 But some of the studies have suggested that it 00:00:42.54\00:00:45.44 can help lots of ways. 00:00:45.47\00:00:46.81 For instance, there's an Asian study that was done that showed 00:00:46.84\00:00:50.25 that people that drank different types of teas can have a 30% 00:00:50.28\00:00:54.95 reduction in breast cancer. Wow! 00:00:54.98\00:00:57.59 And if the people want to do that, 00:00:57.62\00:00:58.95 that's a molecular, nutritional food. 00:00:58.99\00:01:01.02 And you can go to our website and I'll be happy to give you 00:01:01.06\00:01:04.13 the exact references of the studies 00:01:04.16\00:01:06.09 if you really want to see which study. 00:01:06.13\00:01:07.86 Another interesting study is different types of tea 00:01:07.90\00:01:11.70 can help with depression. Yeah. 00:01:11.73\00:01:14.14 So it helps with depression. 00:01:14.17\00:01:15.70 They've really studied that a lot with green tea quite a bit. 00:01:15.74\00:01:19.27 It decreases an enzyme called monoamine oxidase. 00:01:19.31\00:01:23.88 And this is an enzyme that breaks, you know, 00:01:23.91\00:01:26.68 we want to have less of this, because it helps the brain 00:01:26.72\00:01:29.02 chemical serotonin and dopamine. Right. 00:01:29.05\00:01:31.62 So there's some studies that showed drinking certain teas, 00:01:31.65\00:01:34.96 especially green tea, may help in fighting depression. 00:01:34.99\00:01:38.53 It may lift up your moods. 00:01:38.56\00:01:40.83 That's other. I saw another study that showed that certain 00:01:40.90\00:01:43.87 types of tea may help with Parkinson's and 00:01:43.90\00:01:46.23 movement disorders. 00:01:46.27\00:01:47.60 And it probably has the same type of ability to change some 00:01:47.64\00:01:50.67 of the chemistries, especially monoamine oxidase, which helps 00:01:50.71\00:01:54.11 some of the brain chemicals rise to a higher level. 00:01:54.14\00:01:56.98 I'd like to drink tea because there's been some studies that 00:01:57.05\00:02:01.38 show that it has a relaxing effect on your brain waves. 00:02:01.42\00:02:04.39 Yeah. So there's a lot of studies that show... 00:02:04.45\00:02:06.59 We're just learning a lot about it; that certain teas can effect 00:02:06.62\00:02:09.62 the way the metabolism, the chemistry of the brain works; 00:02:09.66\00:02:12.63 especially the alpha brainwaves change, 00:02:12.66\00:02:15.33 and it gives a calming effect. 00:02:15.36\00:02:16.97 So I've noticed that when I drink tea it gives me sort of 00:02:17.00\00:02:20.37 calming, relaxing effect. 00:02:20.40\00:02:22.04 I don't know whether it's due to a physical change, 00:02:22.07\00:02:24.67 or a belief system change. Right. 00:02:24.71\00:02:26.98 You know, if you believe something is helping you, 00:02:27.01\00:02:29.41 studies have shown that you can, it can help you as much 00:02:29.44\00:02:33.58 as 33% of the time. 00:02:33.62\00:02:35.08 It's called the placebo effect sometimes? or is it different? 00:02:35.12\00:02:37.82 Yes, that's what people call it, 00:02:37.85\00:02:39.65 but I like to call it healing beliefs. 00:02:39.69\00:02:42.16 It's a much more positive term. 00:02:42.19\00:02:43.53 Yeah. In fact, you know, talking about healing beliefs, 00:02:43.56\00:02:46.90 there was a true story of a gentleman that was in his 50's. 00:02:46.96\00:02:51.00 He went to his doctor, and they found on a routine CT scan 00:02:51.03\00:02:55.07 a small little mass on the backside of his liver. 00:02:55.10\00:02:58.57 And it was in a place that they couldn't really biopsy it. 00:02:58.61\00:03:02.78 Right. So they said, Listen, we're not going to take 00:03:02.81\00:03:04.51 the risk of the biopsy. 00:03:04.55\00:03:05.88 We'll just take an eye on it to 00:03:05.91\00:03:07.25 see if it's getting bigger. 00:03:07.28\00:03:08.62 Well, this gentleman was convinced that it was cancer, 00:03:08.65\00:03:13.66 and he was convinced that he was going to die. 00:03:13.69\00:03:16.56 And in one year, from them just keeping an eye on it, 00:03:16.62\00:03:20.20 he did pass away. Wow! 00:03:20.23\00:03:22.36 And they did the autopsy on him, and they biopsied this mass, 00:03:22.40\00:03:26.70 and it was a benign cyst. 00:03:26.74\00:03:28.34 And he didn't have anything in his body 00:03:28.37\00:03:30.91 that could have killed him. 00:03:30.94\00:03:32.27 There's no reason he should have died? 00:03:32.31\00:03:33.64 No! He believed he was going to die, and this was an 00:03:33.68\00:03:36.24 example of healing belief. 00:03:36.28\00:03:37.61 So, sometimes when we take something in, if we believe 00:03:37.65\00:03:40.78 it's going to help us, it does help us. 00:03:40.82\00:03:43.15 And that's why sometimes when you go to a doctor, you know, 00:03:43.18\00:03:45.55 they tell you the belief system. 00:03:45.59\00:03:47.96 You know, you believe it and it changes your chemistry. 00:03:47.99\00:03:51.13 Your brain responds to that. 00:03:51.19\00:03:53.16 So that might be part of the reason tea calms me, 00:03:53.19\00:03:55.76 because I believe it's calming me. 00:03:55.80\00:03:57.73 But there are some studies that show that it changes 00:03:57.77\00:04:00.00 the alpha waves in the brain. 00:04:00.04\00:04:01.70 So different beverages have different effects 00:04:01.74\00:04:05.07 chemically on the body. 00:04:05.11\00:04:06.44 We've talked about hibiscus tea. 00:04:06.47\00:04:08.28 There's others that might help in other things. 00:04:08.31\00:04:10.25 We're going to have more studies on this as time goes on. 00:04:10.28\00:04:13.45 And a good site, if you want to learn more about the different 00:04:13.52\00:04:16.32 types of teas and studies that have been done that prove it, 00:04:16.35\00:04:19.12 is nutritionfacts.org. 00:04:19.15\00:04:21.72 Dr. Greggor is a friend of ours that's been on our radio 00:04:21.76\00:04:25.29 program numerous times. 00:04:25.33\00:04:26.66 He's done a lot of research on all the studies that are out 00:04:26.70\00:04:30.23 there on different food products. 00:04:30.27\00:04:32.13 He's reviewed the literature. 00:04:32.17\00:04:33.64 And this is one site that I go to when I want to learn about 00:04:33.67\00:04:37.44 which foods have solid evidence that it helps. 00:04:37.47\00:04:40.14 Now I'm not saying other foods don't help, but this is so far 00:04:40.18\00:04:43.68 where we have the evidence. 00:04:43.71\00:04:45.05 Now a hundred years ago we didn't study food 00:04:45.08\00:04:47.55 like we're doing today. 00:04:47.58\00:04:48.92 But now people are looking for alternatives to change 00:04:48.95\00:04:52.09 the physiology of the body. 00:04:52.12\00:04:53.46 Well, let's talk about this a little bit more. 00:04:53.49\00:04:55.32 We've talked about some of the benefits of teas. 00:04:55.36\00:04:57.19 I know it's very popular for people maybe to drink tea in 00:04:57.23\00:04:59.89 the morning sometimes. 00:04:59.93\00:05:01.26 People also like to drink coffee in the morning. 00:05:01.30\00:05:03.26 Some people like to drink alcoholic 00:05:03.30\00:05:05.37 beverages in the evening. 00:05:05.40\00:05:06.74 But not all of these beverages are good for us. Yeah. 00:05:06.77\00:05:09.37 What is the best, absolute best thing we can drink? 00:05:09.40\00:05:12.81 Well, I think the best thing for us to drink is water. 00:05:12.84\00:05:16.21 Just regular plain old water? 00:05:16.24\00:05:17.81 70% of our body is made of water. Uh huh. 00:05:17.85\00:05:21.42 Now I know that some people like to flavor 00:05:21.45\00:05:23.95 their water, and that's okay. 00:05:23.99\00:05:25.39 You know, if you put lemon or something in the water it might 00:05:25.42\00:05:27.86 add some acidic component, and that can hurt 00:05:27.89\00:05:29.92 the enamel on the teeth. 00:05:29.96\00:05:31.43 Some people have the acidic component to help other things. 00:05:31.46\00:05:36.30 But water is the best beverage. 00:05:36.33\00:05:38.70 Every cell in our body depends on water. Yeah. 00:05:38.73\00:05:42.37 Water, lack of water, 70% of American's don't get 00:05:42.40\00:05:47.08 enough water every day. 00:05:47.11\00:05:48.44 When you don't get water in your body it puts stress on our 00:05:48.48\00:05:51.65 body, turns on the stress chemistry, turns on processes 00:05:51.68\00:05:55.05 like oxidation and stress. 00:05:55.08\00:05:57.42 It's the number one cause of daytime fatigue. 00:05:57.45\00:06:00.09 Drinking enough water will thin out the blood. 00:06:00.12\00:06:02.69 Drinking enough water helps every cell in the body; 00:06:02.72\00:06:05.89 helps our brain, our memory do better. 00:06:05.93\00:06:07.93 It helps every joint feel better, 00:06:07.96\00:06:10.53 because we need the lubrication. 00:06:10.57\00:06:11.90 It thins out the blood. 00:06:11.93\00:06:13.27 So water helps a lot of things in our bodies, 00:06:13.30\00:06:15.77 so I think water is the best beverage. 00:06:15.80\00:06:18.07 So then let's talk about the opposite side of the spectrum. 00:06:18.14\00:06:20.48 What would you say is maybe the worst beverage for us? 00:06:20.51\00:06:22.68 Oh boy, lots of bad beverages. 00:06:22.71\00:06:24.65 But you have to put alcoholic beverages up there at the top, 00:06:24.68\00:06:27.95 because they're associated with different cancers. 00:06:27.98\00:06:30.35 They make us not rest well at night; they're addictive. 00:06:30.39\00:06:32.99 Other beverages that might not be so good is soda pops, 00:06:34.06\00:06:39.16 You know? High fructose corn syrup in there? 00:06:39.19\00:06:41.33 Yeah, they have lots of that. 00:06:41.36\00:06:42.70 That's addictive. They have really, they don't really help 00:06:42.73\00:06:45.50 your body in any way, shape, or form 00:06:45.53\00:06:47.64 So that's a lot of information. 00:06:47.67\00:06:49.30 And there's lots, yes, there's lots of soda pops out there 00:06:49.34\00:06:52.14 of different varieties. 00:06:52.17\00:06:53.51 We're finding out that milk, you know, milk from a cow might not 00:06:53.54\00:06:58.91 be so good, because it has chemicals, dairy and different 00:06:58.95\00:07:01.95 things in the chemicals, and fat in the milk. 00:07:01.98\00:07:04.39 That might not be such a good beverage. 00:07:04.42\00:07:06.92 And yet all throughout the television and commercials, 00:07:06.96\00:07:11.26 have you seen that commercial about milk? 00:07:11.29\00:07:13.50 Oh, yeah. Got the milk. 00:07:13.53\00:07:14.86 Yeah, yeah, it's been in study. 00:07:14.90\00:07:16.90 In fact, nowadays the milk industry's been picking on other 00:07:16.93\00:07:20.47 types of alternative beverages like soy, almond, 00:07:20.50\00:07:23.81 other alternatives, because they said, 00:07:23.84\00:07:25.81 They shouldn't call that milk, because that's not milk, 00:07:25.84\00:07:28.04 that's another beverage. 00:07:28.08\00:07:29.88 Right, yeah. So I don't know. 00:07:29.91\00:07:31.85 But I think milk is not a great beverage for us either. 00:07:31.88\00:07:34.85 And that's just a few of them. 00:07:34.88\00:07:36.22 So alcohol, milk, soda pop, some of those might not be the 00:07:36.25\00:07:39.62 best beverages for us to consume. 00:07:39.65\00:07:41.72 But we definitely want to put water in our bodies. Yep. 00:07:41.76\00:07:44.73 I'm just going to stick with drinking mostly water. 00:07:44.76\00:07:47.73 That's a good plan. 00:07:47.76\00:07:49.10 And if you'd like to help yourself get back on track with 00:07:49.13\00:07:52.00 following God's design for your life, we've got a short clip 00:07:52.03\00:07:55.27 to help you get on the path there. 00:07:55.30\00:07:56.67 This is a Biblical Prescription for Life clip by Dr. Marcum. 00:07:56.71\00:08:00.38 I'm Dr. James Marcum with your Biblical Prescription for Life. 00:08:03.28\00:08:07.45 Unfortunately, many people have high blood pressure today. 00:08:07.52\00:08:11.72 Well, our Biblical Prescription for Life comes from James. 00:08:11.75\00:08:15.32 Well, how was this a Biblical Prescription for Life? 00:08:21.76\00:08:25.30 There are so many inputs in the world we live in. 00:08:25.33\00:08:28.77 There's inputs from television, cell phones, media, radio. 00:08:28.80\00:08:34.64 How do we know who, or even what to believe? 00:08:34.71\00:08:38.45 Sometimes these inputs put stress on the body. 00:08:38.48\00:08:41.95 And guess what? The stress raises cortisol levels, 00:08:41.98\00:08:45.32 raises adrenalin levels, raises our blood pressure. 00:08:45.35\00:08:48.62 Well, when you're looking for answers, I want to invite you 00:08:48.66\00:08:51.69 to remember this text, this Biblical Prescription for Life. 00:08:51.73\00:08:55.16 James 1:5.
