With the rising cost of health care, and disease being more 00:00:17.08\00:00:19.81 prevalent than ever, more and more people are starting to 00:00:19.85\00:00:22.45 pay attention to what they eat and drink. 00:00:22.48\00:00:25.09 Stay tuned to today's program where we're going to be talking 00:00:25.12\00:00:27.59 about food as medicine. 00:00:27.62\00:00:29.29 The Ultimate Prescription starts now. 00:00:29.32\00:00:31.23 I'm Dr. James Marcum. 00:00:32.39\00:00:34.20 Are you interested in discovering the reason why? 00:00:34.23\00:00:37.17 Do you want solutions to your health care problem? 00:00:37.90\00:00:40.44 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:00:40.47\00:00:43.37 Well, you're about to be given the Ultimate Prescription. 00:00:43.41\00:00:46.84 Hello, and thank you for joining us here today at the 00:00:49.91\00:00:52.01 Ultimate Prescription, a program dedicated to helping us better 00:00:52.05\00:00:55.22 understand God's design for our lives. 00:00:55.25\00:00:57.05 I'm your host, Nick Evanson, and we're talking here with 00:00:57.09\00:00:59.42 Dr. James Marcum today about medicine as food. 00:00:59.45\00:01:02.42 And, Dr. Marcum, welcome to the program. 00:01:02.46\00:01:03.96 Well, it's nice being here, Nick. 00:01:03.99\00:01:05.83 And I'll tell you, I had a great night's sleep last night. 00:01:05.86\00:01:09.66 That's wonderful! 00:01:09.70\00:01:11.03 I went to bed early listening to some music, and the next thing 00:01:11.07\00:01:14.54 I knew it was midnight, and I said, Man... 00:01:14.57\00:01:17.51 And you're still listening to the music? 00:01:17.54\00:01:18.87 Yeah, I was listening to the music. 00:01:18.91\00:01:20.24 I turned it off and went to sleep. 00:01:20.28\00:01:21.61 You know, sleep is so important. Yeah. 00:01:21.64\00:01:23.28 When the body's rested and renewed itself, sleep is one of 00:01:23.31\00:01:26.15 the most valuable treatments. 00:01:26.18\00:01:27.75 I know we're talking about food as medicine, but I'm going to 00:01:27.78\00:01:31.39 divert for a little bit, and talk a little bit about rest, 00:01:31.42\00:01:35.02 and how important that rest is. 00:01:35.06\00:01:36.56 You know, there's so many stressors in the world, 00:01:36.59\00:01:39.19 from all over, whether it be our food, or the climate, 00:01:39.23\00:01:43.37 or worries that we see. 00:01:43.40\00:01:44.73 A lot of people now are stressed even by politics. 00:01:44.77\00:01:47.00 Are you? Do you watch politics? 00:01:47.04\00:01:48.67 I try not to watch too much of it, but if you watch the news 00:01:48.70\00:01:51.07 at all you can't help but see some of it. 00:01:51.11\00:01:52.57 You know, why is the news always, it seems like it always 00:01:52.61\00:01:55.24 has negative stories. 00:01:55.28\00:01:56.61 I wish they required you to have just as many positive, 00:01:56.64\00:01:58.88 and feel good stories as they do negative. 00:01:58.91\00:02:00.98 That would be good for us. 00:02:01.02\00:02:02.35 Anyway, so a lot of people are stressed out these days. 00:02:02.38\00:02:05.39 Well, I'm diverting, but the opposite of stress is rest. 00:02:05.42\00:02:08.82 And I frequently, in addition to nutritional things, 00:02:08.86\00:02:11.96 there's other aspects of health, I frequently 00:02:11.99\00:02:14.36 prescribe rest to people. 00:02:14.40\00:02:16.00 And the three different types of rest: there's the physical 00:02:16.03\00:02:19.50 rest, and I did really good with that last night. 00:02:19.53\00:02:22.37 There's also the mental rest. 00:02:22.40\00:02:24.67 You know, some people are busy 24/7. Right. 00:02:24.71\00:02:28.24 And they're just doing stuff all the time. 00:02:28.28\00:02:30.48 And their brain actually needs some down times, 00:02:30.51\00:02:33.21 like turning your computer off lets it reboot, so you can rest. 00:02:33.25\00:02:36.75 And everything comes back on better if you rest. 00:02:36.79\00:02:39.15 A lot of people feel guilty for doing fun things. 00:02:39.19\00:02:42.09 You know, going out and doing something that 00:02:42.12\00:02:44.16 you'll really enjoy. 00:02:44.19\00:02:45.53 But, you know, I was in Europe not too long ago, 00:02:45.56\00:02:48.56 and some of those people in Europe don't have 00:02:48.60\00:02:50.57 the best of habits. 00:02:50.60\00:02:51.93 And yet I noticed that their health, especially their chronic 00:02:51.97\00:02:55.07 disease, was much less than what we have in the United States. 00:02:55.10\00:02:58.47 And they take time off every day just to rest and have fun. 00:02:58.51\00:03:01.88 Yeah, just enjoy life a little bit. 00:03:01.91\00:03:03.24 That's important. So that's the second type of rest 00:03:03.28\00:03:05.48 to counteract the stress of the world. 00:03:05.51\00:03:07.42 And the third type is found in Matthew. 00:03:07.45\00:03:10.39 The text in Matthew 11:28 that says, Come unto Me all you who 00:03:10.42\00:03:14.72 are weary and heavy laden, the ones that are stressed out, 00:03:14.76\00:03:17.69 and God gives us rest. 00:03:17.73\00:03:19.59 So our worship is a treatment for stress. 00:03:19.63\00:03:22.56 And now we have studies that show when we're in worship our 00:03:22.60\00:03:26.00 stress chemistry goes down, our brain improves. 00:03:26.03\00:03:29.17 It helps even our DNA do better. 00:03:29.20\00:03:32.07 So that's why I had a good sleep last night. 00:03:32.11\00:03:34.61 My stress level has come down a lot, and I'm wearing 00:03:34.64\00:03:37.51 comfortable shoes today. 00:03:37.55\00:03:38.88 That's important, too. 00:03:38.91\00:03:40.25 So when your feet are happy the whole body's happy. 00:03:40.28\00:03:41.88 So we're talking about food and beverages today. 00:03:41.92\00:03:45.12 Yeah, so rest is something that will benefit everybody. Yep. 00:03:45.15\00:03:47.69 Nutrition is as well. Uh huh. 00:03:47.72\00:03:49.62 But I imagine there might be one specific type of patient who 00:03:49.66\00:03:53.33 benefits the most from nutritional 00:03:53.36\00:03:56.06 attention to what they eat? 00:03:56.10\00:03:58.13 Well, we're talking in this series about 00:03:58.17\00:04:00.44 nutrition as medicine. Uh huh. 00:04:00.47\00:04:02.17 Remember foods have chemicals in them that 00:04:02.20\00:04:05.24 changes our physiology. 00:04:05.27\00:04:07.38 Well, you know, we know certain foods that we need just to stay 00:04:07.41\00:04:10.48 alive and give us energy, and our proteins, our carbohydrates, 00:04:10.51\00:04:14.15 some fats in our diet. Right. 00:04:14.18\00:04:15.78 But now we're learning that there's specific chemicals 00:04:15.82\00:04:18.75 in certain foods that can treat disease conditions. 00:04:18.79\00:04:23.09 Now are these chemicals similar to chemicals found in say 00:04:23.12\00:04:27.16 prescription medications? 00:04:27.20\00:04:28.53 Well, yes they are. 00:04:28.56\00:04:29.90 You know, they're all chemical compounds made up of carbon, 00:04:29.93\00:04:33.10 and nitrogen's, and hydrogen bonds hooked 00:04:33.13\00:04:35.17 together in fancy ways. 00:04:35.20\00:04:36.54 Then when they get into the body, some enter and 00:04:36.57\00:04:39.21 do different things. 00:04:39.24\00:04:40.58 Some are broken down by the body to do certain things. 00:04:40.61\00:04:43.18 God has just made us so complicated biochemically. 00:04:43.21\00:04:47.22 It's just amazing how all these chemicals interact. 00:04:47.25\00:04:50.49 Now we've, of course, developed chemicals and 00:04:50.52\00:04:54.19 the physiology of medications. 00:04:54.22\00:04:55.82 Okay, I went to medical school. 00:04:55.86\00:04:57.49 We spent a lot of time learning about those. 00:04:57.53\00:05:00.10 But remember, a lot of times those just treat 00:05:00.13\00:05:02.46 one chemical pathway. 00:05:02.50\00:05:03.93 But now we're looking at nutrition as a way to treat 00:05:03.97\00:05:07.87 specific disease conditions. 00:05:07.90\00:05:09.90 You know, to actually change our physiology. 00:05:09.94\00:05:13.07 Now is every plant good? 00:05:13.11\00:05:15.21 You know, and that everything that we eat good? 00:05:15.24\00:05:17.28 Not necessilarly, you know. 00:05:17.31\00:05:18.95 Have you ever had poison ivy lately? 00:05:18.98\00:05:21.68 Not lately, but as a child I had it quite bad. 00:05:21.72\00:05:24.15 Well, that wouldn't be something you would use as a 00:05:24.19\00:05:26.02 medication, you know. 00:05:26.05\00:05:27.42 Not that I'm aware of. 00:05:27.46\00:05:28.79 But now we have studies on certain foods, the chemicals of 00:05:28.82\00:05:31.33 certain foods, and we actually studied the amount that can 00:05:31.36\00:05:34.53 actually change our physiology. 00:05:34.56\00:05:36.53 So some people that come to the office that have certain 00:05:36.56\00:05:39.63 conditions we now can say, Listen, we now have certain 00:05:39.67\00:05:43.14 foods you can eat that will change your chemistry, 00:05:43.17\00:05:45.87 and treat this condition. Right. 00:05:45.91\00:05:47.48 And some people choose to have a medication for their ills, 00:05:47.51\00:05:52.41 to treat a symptom. 00:05:52.45\00:05:53.78 Some people choose a nutritional aid, and sometimes there's other 00:05:53.82\00:05:57.35 things that we can do. 00:05:57.39\00:05:58.72 Sometimes I can just prescribe rest and it helps a person out. 00:05:58.75\00:06:01.76 Right. You know, rest is a treatment for something 00:06:01.79\00:06:03.99 like high blood pressure. 00:06:04.03\00:06:05.53 Rest would be something for treatment; it's a treatment for 00:06:05.56\00:06:08.23 inflammation, so it helps different things as well. 00:06:08.26\00:06:11.17 So all these different things that come into 00:06:11.20\00:06:13.13 our body have changes. 00:06:13.17\00:06:14.57 And we've actually studied these. 00:06:14.60\00:06:16.00 And what I've done in this series is I've specifically 00:06:16.04\00:06:18.97 looked at the literature. 00:06:19.01\00:06:20.34 Now there's lots of things that have not been proven 00:06:20.38\00:06:23.35 and might be helpful. 00:06:23.38\00:06:24.71 But they also might be harmful, just like eating poison ivy. 00:06:24.75\00:06:27.38 You wouldn't necessarily want to do that 00:06:27.42\00:06:29.02 as a nutritional treatment. 00:06:29.05\00:06:30.95 There's lots of plants that are good. 00:06:30.99\00:06:33.22 There's some plants that aren't so good. 00:06:33.25\00:06:34.82 And I've actually looked through the studies that have been done 00:06:34.86\00:06:38.79 on certain plants, and these are studies that have been done, 00:06:38.83\00:06:42.43 and proven, and repeated, and replicated. 00:06:42.46\00:06:45.37 And these are things that I think would definitely be used 00:06:45.40\00:06:49.14 to treat certain disease conditions. 00:06:49.17\00:06:50.77 And I wanted to bring those to our audience, 00:06:50.81\00:06:52.71 just so they could start thinking about these. 00:06:52.74\00:06:54.64 And this might be something that they might want to apply 00:06:54.68\00:06:57.21 to their life to treat certain conditions. 00:06:57.25\00:07:00.05 That makes sense, but I think there's a perception out there, 00:07:00.08\00:07:02.82 and I could be wrong, but I think people look at 00:07:02.85\00:07:05.19 medications, let's say, this is just water, but let's say 00:07:05.22\00:07:07.16 it was a medication. 00:07:07.19\00:07:08.52 People will think, This is going to heal me. 00:07:08.56\00:07:09.89 The doctor gave me this prescription. 00:07:09.92\00:07:11.26 I have faith that this is going to work. Right. 00:07:11.29\00:07:13.09 And I think sometimes when we're talking about nutrition, 00:07:13.13\00:07:15.86 people don't expect that nutrition can have a dramatic 00:07:15.90\00:07:18.97 effect on their health. 00:07:19.00\00:07:20.34 Is that right? Are people?... 00:07:20.37\00:07:21.70 Yeah, I agree with you that we have some slick 00:07:21.74\00:07:24.81 marketing out there. 00:07:24.84\00:07:26.17 Lots of people want something that will fix them, you know, 00:07:26.21\00:07:30.61 or they think, when it's been marketed as it's going to fix 00:07:30.65\00:07:33.11 you right now, where it really just treats a symptom, 00:07:33.15\00:07:36.22 at least in chronic diseases. 00:07:36.25\00:07:38.35 The chronic diseases, medicines really don't fix the problem, 00:07:38.39\00:07:43.16 they just treat the symptoms. 00:07:43.19\00:07:44.53 And in chronic diseases, I mean things like type 2 diabetes, 00:07:44.56\00:07:47.16 high blood pressure, obesity, joint pains, not sleeping well 00:07:47.20\00:07:54.20 at night, maybe even anxiety depression. 00:07:54.24\00:07:56.40 Some of these chemical changes that happen chronically, 00:07:56.44\00:07:59.87 if we can get at the cause, that is really much better 00:07:59.91\00:08:03.65 than just treating symptoms. 00:08:03.68\00:08:05.01 But everyone wants a quick fix. 00:08:05.05\00:08:06.38 It's been marketed that way, and we've done it 00:08:06.41\00:08:07.95 for years and years. 00:08:07.98\00:08:09.32 The pharmaceutical industry is making a lot of money; 00:08:09.35\00:08:14.02 billions of dollars. 00:08:14.06\00:08:15.69 They have lobbyists. 00:08:15.72\00:08:17.06 They hit us in medical school. 00:08:17.09\00:08:19.89 You know, they don't call it physiology school, 00:08:19.93\00:08:23.26 they don't call it nutritional school, 00:08:23.30\00:08:24.93 they don't call it lifestyle school, 00:08:24.97\00:08:26.63 they call it medical school. 00:08:26.67\00:08:28.10 We're taught about these chemical pathways. 00:08:28.14\00:08:30.57 So you're right in that perception. 00:08:30.61\00:08:32.24 And that's what we're trying to do here is give people some 00:08:32.27\00:08:35.08 alternative things to think about, show them the evidence 00:08:35.11\00:08:38.21 behind it, and let them know that this is something they can 00:08:38.25\00:08:40.82 incorporate into their lives. 00:08:40.85\00:08:42.25 There's evidence based behind it. 00:08:42.28\00:08:43.69 This is things we can do to ways to get at chronic disease 00:08:43.72\00:08:46.89 if people want to do that. 00:08:46.92\00:08:48.26 Now some people say, No, I just want to treat the symptom. 00:08:48.29\00:08:51.29 And that's their right to do so. 00:08:51.33\00:08:52.89 But we want to give them some truth and let them 00:08:52.93\00:08:55.30 know what's out there. 00:08:55.33\00:08:57.10 That's right. And some of these chronic conditions, 00:08:57.13\00:08:58.73 if they're taking a medication for it, they're going to be on 00:08:58.77\00:09:00.74 these medications for the rest of their life potentially. 00:09:00.77\00:09:02.84 Right, and every medication has some side effects. 00:09:02.87\00:09:06.01 And you have to deal with that as well. 00:09:06.04\00:09:07.58 And those medications are treating one path, 00:09:07.61\00:09:09.48 whereas the nutritional alternative might benefit a lot 00:09:09.51\00:09:13.11 of areas of your life. 00:09:13.15\00:09:14.48 Yeah. So we've looked at some specific foods and beverages 00:09:14.52\00:09:17.69 that change our chemistry that we can use just as effective 00:09:17.72\00:09:21.32 as a prescription pill. 00:09:21.36\00:09:23.39 Right. And on today's program we're going to talk about 00:09:23.43\00:09:25.86 hibiscus and other beverages that might have 00:09:25.89\00:09:29.03 some healing powers. 00:09:29.06\00:09:30.40 And this is a hibiscus tea here that we've steeped a little bit, 00:09:30.43\00:09:34.94 and it's got a nice rich red color. 00:09:34.97\00:09:36.81 It looks delicious. Yeah. 00:09:36.84\00:09:38.17 What can you tell us about hibiscus, Dr. Marcum? 00:09:38.21\00:09:40.81 Well, you know, before I talk to you about the study... 00:09:40.84\00:09:43.55 Is hibiscus a flower? 00:09:43.58\00:09:45.01 What is hibiscus?... What is the background on hibiscus? 00:09:45.05\00:09:48.85 Here's a fun fact... 00:09:48.88\00:09:50.22 I think it is a flower. 00:09:50.25\00:09:51.59 Everybody knows commonly about the flower, 00:09:51.62\00:09:52.95 because it's very beautiful. 00:09:52.99\00:09:54.32 But hibiscus is actually the name given to more than 250 00:09:54.36\00:09:57.06 species of herbs, shrubs, and trees of the mallow, 00:09:57.09\00:10:00.93 or Malvaceae family. Yeah. 00:10:00.96\00:10:03.26 How about that? There's over 250 different items that 00:10:03.30\00:10:05.43 are labeled hibiscus. 00:10:05.47\00:10:06.80 You know, and so taking different herbs and things 00:10:06.84\00:10:09.77 in us, you know, we have to talk to our doctor, 00:10:09.80\00:10:11.94 because certain herbs are not good. Right. 00:10:11.97\00:10:14.08 Certain herbs have been studied, certain herbs 00:10:14.11\00:10:16.18 have not been studied. Right. 00:10:16.21\00:10:17.58 Okay, well this is one of the teas that's been studied 00:10:17.65\00:10:21.42 very well, hibiscus. 00:10:21.45\00:10:22.82 And actually Tufts University, they actually studied this. 00:10:22.85\00:10:27.69 And they had people drink three cups of hibiscus tea a day, 00:10:27.72\00:10:32.53 and they showed that it lowered your blood pressure, 00:10:32.56\00:10:36.26 the sostolic blood pressure about six points, okay? 00:10:36.30\00:10:39.93 Then another thing that they wanted to study; 00:10:40.00\00:10:43.24 they took people having two cups in the morning. 00:10:43.27\00:10:46.44 They found that was as effective in lowering blood pressure 00:10:46.47\00:10:50.11 as a medication we prescribed called taking 00:10:50.15\00:10:53.45 captopril twice a day. 00:10:53.48\00:10:55.35 Wow, that's significant. Yes. 00:10:55.38\00:10:56.82 As effective as using the medication. 00:10:56.85\00:10:58.55 Yes, they studied that. 00:10:58.62\00:10:59.95 And the point is is this has been studied. 00:10:59.99\00:11:01.76 You know, of course, hibiscus has a few side effects, too, 00:11:01.79\00:11:05.46 you know, if you use it as medicine. 00:11:05.49\00:11:06.83 The main one is the chemicals in it are a little bit acidic. 00:11:06.86\00:11:10.73 Now you've done some background. 00:11:10.77\00:11:12.77 It has quite a few different acids in it, doesn't it? Yeah. 00:11:12.80\00:11:15.34 Yeah. And you do have to brush your teeth, because it can hurt 00:11:15.37\00:11:19.54 your enamel afterwards. Sure. 00:11:19.57\00:11:21.28 And, of course, you don't want to take too much 00:11:21.31\00:11:22.98 of any good thing in. 00:11:23.01\00:11:24.35 So you don't want to do that. 00:11:24.38\00:11:25.71 But you do have to rinse your mouth afterwards. 00:11:25.75\00:11:28.28 But hibiscus is something that people can add to their... 00:11:28.32\00:11:31.02 If they have high blood pressure they might want to use 00:11:31.05\00:11:33.72 hibiscus tea instead of a medication to lower 00:11:33.76\00:11:36.76 their blood pressure. 00:11:36.79\00:11:38.13 Also hibiscus has lots of antioxidants, and other things 00:11:38.16\00:11:41.86 that are beneficial that they haven't studied in studies yet. 00:11:41.90\00:11:45.87 So a lot of these plants have studies on them, 00:11:45.93\00:11:48.20 but there's lots of beneficial things that have not been 00:11:48.24\00:11:50.37 studied that they can incorporate into their lives. 00:11:50.41\00:11:53.14 So recap just there. 00:11:53.17\00:11:54.51 You mentioned a couple conditions that 00:11:54.54\00:11:56.28 hibiscus is good for. 00:11:56.34\00:11:57.68 Recap those for us. 00:11:57.71\00:11:59.05 Yeah. Hibiscus is especially good for 00:11:59.08\00:12:00.85 lowering blood pressure. 00:12:00.92\00:12:02.25 And it's been shown in the Tufts University study to be 00:12:02.28\00:12:04.85 just as effective as the medication 00:12:04.89\00:12:07.09 captopril twice a day. 00:12:07.12\00:12:08.52 It also has antioxidants, which might help 00:12:08.56\00:12:12.49 some with inflammation. 00:12:12.56\00:12:13.90 Antioxidants are sort of anti-aging, 00:12:13.93\00:12:16.67 keeps us from rusting; might help our DNA do better. 00:12:16.70\00:12:19.63 So there's less mutations, there's less changes. 00:12:19.70\00:12:22.57 So there's lots of things that we're learning about this tea 00:12:22.60\00:12:26.91 that's beneficial to us. 00:12:26.94\00:12:28.28 And now how to put it in our diet, that's another challenge. 00:12:28.31\00:12:31.98 Yeah. And for that challenge we've turned to our friend, 00:12:32.01\00:12:34.45 Kristina McFeeters, who runs a health food store. 00:12:34.48\00:12:37.35 She helps education people on some of these natural remedies 00:12:37.39\00:12:39.99 that you can use, and she's going to show us how to make 00:12:40.02\00:12:42.59 this hibiscus tea from scratch. 00:12:42.62\00:12:44.43 And so we're going to turn it over to Kristina. 00:12:44.46\00:12:46.80 Welcome to Kristina's Kitchen. 00:12:48.63\00:12:50.90 I'm Kristina McFeeters. 00:12:50.93\00:12:52.67 Today let's explore one of my favorite ways to incorporate 00:12:52.70\00:12:56.57 hibiscus into my diet. 00:12:56.60\00:12:58.64 I'm going to show you how to make ice tea out of loose 00:12:58.67\00:13:02.44 leaf hibiscus flowers. 00:13:02.48\00:13:04.45 You can find dried hibiscus flowers at any bulk herb store. 00:13:04.48\00:13:09.08 Also, if you don't want to make your own tea you can find 00:13:09.12\00:13:13.69 tea bags with hibiscus at any health food store, 00:13:13.76\00:13:18.93 and some grocery stores. 00:13:18.96\00:13:20.43 If you want to make your own tea with loose leaf herb 00:13:20.46\00:13:24.07 one of the things that I like to use is a tea ball. 00:13:24.13\00:13:27.70 It makes it very easy. 00:13:27.74\00:13:29.60 There's very little cleanup. 00:13:29.64\00:13:31.14 If you don't have a tea ball, you can put the herbs straight 00:13:31.17\00:13:34.44 into your cup, and then just pour it through a strainer, 00:13:34.48\00:13:37.68 to strain the pieces out before you drink it. 00:13:37.71\00:13:39.95 We're going to use the tea ball. 00:13:39.98\00:13:41.92 And the most common rule of thumb for most of your herbs 00:13:41.98\00:13:46.82 is about a teaspoon to a tablespoon per cup of water. 00:13:46.86\00:13:51.63 Because the hibiscus flowers are large, and take up a lot of 00:13:51.66\00:13:55.13 space, we do a tablespoon per cup. 00:13:55.16\00:13:58.20 We're going to put the tea ball in the cup, and see if I can 00:14:08.61\00:14:14.68 keep the chain out, so it will be easier to get out later. 00:14:14.72\00:14:17.49 And we're going to add boiling water. 00:14:19.95\00:14:21.29 When I'm making ice tea I like to fill up my cup half full 00:14:22.82\00:14:27.40 with boiling water. 00:14:27.43\00:14:28.86 And once it's steeped I can fill the rest of it with ice cubes. 00:14:28.90\00:14:33.03 We're going to let this steep for five to ten minutes, 00:14:36.10\00:14:38.94 and then we'll add our ice. 00:14:38.97\00:14:41.04 If you like to sweeten it at this point, you can add some 00:14:41.11\00:14:45.28 sweetener while it's still hot. 00:14:45.31\00:14:47.35 But hibiscus tea has a sweet, but tart, tangy flavor. 00:14:47.38\00:14:52.95 And I like it without any sweetener at all. 00:14:52.99\00:14:55.62 So our tea is done steeping. 00:14:55.66\00:14:57.33 We're going to remove the tea ball out of our tea. 00:14:57.36\00:15:04.17 And we're going to add ice cubes to fill up the rest of the cup. 00:15:08.57\00:15:13.11 See how fun and simple that is? 00:15:37.73\00:15:39.57 It's guilt free, full of nutrition, amazing 00:15:39.60\00:15:44.07 antioxidants, and so delicious. 00:15:44.11\00:15:46.51 Be sure and try this at home. 00:15:46.54\00:15:48.91 Thanks, Kristina. That was a great demo. 00:15:49.74\00:15:51.68 And using loose leaf like that, it's probably the most 00:15:51.71\00:15:54.12 economical way to do it. 00:15:54.15\00:15:55.48 But you also, like we have here, you can just use these tea bags, 00:15:55.52\00:15:58.95 and it makes it pretty convenient and easy, but maybe 00:15:58.99\00:16:02.16 a little bit more expensive. 00:16:02.19\00:16:03.53 But if you haven't tasted this, this is, it's rather a tart, 00:16:03.56\00:16:07.36 kind of like a, maybe a cranberry almost. 00:16:07.40\00:16:09.46 But it's very delicious, very good. 00:16:09.50\00:16:10.97 But, you know, if you think about it, you know, the tea bag, 00:16:11.00\00:16:13.57 of course, you know, you get the chemicals out into the 00:16:13.60\00:16:16.54 beverage from the tea bag. 00:16:16.57\00:16:18.24 And we get those good chemicals that lower your blood pressure. 00:16:18.27\00:16:21.54 So, you know, you think about, after you've had a tough day, 00:16:21.58\00:16:24.78 you're really stressed out from work. 00:16:24.81\00:16:26.31 Your blood pressure might be going up a little bit. 00:16:26.35\00:16:29.05 Well, this would be a good beverage to help bring down 00:16:29.08\00:16:31.72 the blood pressure, help sort of calm you, and relax you. 00:16:31.75\00:16:34.36 So that was really great that Kristina 00:16:34.39\00:16:36.09 showed us how to do that. 00:16:36.12\00:16:37.53 Yep. Well, we've got to take a break, but we're going to be 00:16:37.56\00:16:40.06 back in just a moment as there's lots more to talk about 00:16:40.10\00:16:42.56 regarding food as medicine. Stay with us. 00:16:42.60\00:16:46.20
