Welcome back to the Ultimate Prescription. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 I'm your host, Nick Evenson, and today we are 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.73 discussing food as medicine. 00:00:04.77\00:00:06.70 And we've been talking about ginger. 00:00:06.74\00:00:08.27 And I have to confess I made a mistake earlier. 00:00:08.30\00:00:11.94 See, we called this the ginger root, but I Googled it and 00:00:11.97\00:00:16.68 ginger is actually not a root, it's a rhizome. 00:00:16.71\00:00:19.68 What is a rhizome? A rhizome is an underground stem. 00:00:19.71\00:00:23.32 So it's actually not a root. 00:00:23.35\00:00:25.12 So it's a stem that grows under the dirt. 00:00:25.15\00:00:26.82 So it's a stem that grows underground. 00:00:26.86\00:00:29.19 That right, that's right. 00:00:29.22\00:00:30.56 And I also found out that this is native to Southeastern Asia. 00:00:30.59\00:00:35.66 I'm not sure if we import it, or we grow it here now, 00:00:35.70\00:00:38.00 but it originally came from Southeastern Asia. 00:00:38.03\00:00:40.60 You know, what I like about that, it seems like a little bit 00:00:40.64\00:00:43.27 of ginger rhizome... That's right!... goes a long way. 00:00:43.30\00:00:47.38 Yeah, yeah. You know, I've noticed, I put a little in my 00:00:47.41\00:00:49.94 mouth a few minutes ago, and I think my breath has improved. 00:00:49.98\00:00:52.58 I'm going to take your word for that. 00:00:52.61\00:00:54.15 Well, I think it could improve your breath, Nick. 00:00:54.18\00:00:56.22 I think so. Maybe I'll try some. 00:00:56.25\00:00:57.75 You know what I like to try to do? 00:00:57.79\00:00:59.35 It sort of gives you a tingly... Can you imagine? 00:00:59.39\00:01:01.42 It helps wake you up a little bit. 00:01:01.46\00:01:02.79 I'm going to kiss Sonya. 00:01:02.82\00:01:04.16 That's my wife. Your wife. 00:01:04.19\00:01:05.53 Yes, I'm going to kiss Sonya, and see if... 00:01:05.56\00:01:06.90 See if she likes the juice? 00:01:06.93\00:01:08.26 See if it does anything special. 00:01:08.30\00:01:09.63 You know, maybe it has something more than just 00:01:09.66\00:01:12.00 the inflammation? I don't know. 00:01:12.03\00:01:13.50 You should try that. 00:01:13.54\00:01:14.87 Yes, and for sure it cuts back nauseous. That's right. 00:01:14.90\00:01:17.77 So, anyway, interesting. We're off track. 00:01:17.81\00:01:20.98 On a more serious note, let's get back to 00:01:21.01\00:01:22.58 the task at hand here. Serious. 00:01:22.61\00:01:24.18 Ginger is very good for you; a lot of healing properties. 00:01:24.21\00:01:28.25 Are there any cautions? 00:01:28.28\00:01:31.39 That's a good word: cautions. 00:01:31.42\00:01:32.85 You know, when we use food as medicine, a lot of the cautions 00:01:32.89\00:01:37.23 come when we mix it with other medication, 00:01:37.26\00:01:39.36 prescription medications 00:01:39.39\00:01:40.76 The three prescription medications I think people need 00:01:40.80\00:01:43.97 to be careful when they, you know, if they're on those is 00:01:44.00\00:01:46.80 medicines that thin the blood, blood thinners, 00:01:46.84\00:01:49.10 blood sugar medicines that lower the blood, and grapefruit. 00:01:49.14\00:01:53.58 Those are things that tend to interact, you know, quite a bit 00:01:53.61\00:01:56.85 with different types of food systems that we might eat. 00:01:56.88\00:01:59.78 So ginger is one of those. 00:01:59.81\00:02:01.15 If you're on a blood thinner, ginger can actually make 00:02:01.18\00:02:03.82 your blood more thin. 00:02:03.85\00:02:05.35 So you have to be careful if you're on a blood thinner. 00:02:05.39\00:02:08.12 Another thing, if you're on blood sugar medicines, you know, 00:02:08.16\00:02:11.49 that lower your blood sugar, ginger can make your 00:02:11.53\00:02:13.80 blood sugar go too low. Uh huh. 00:02:13.83\00:02:16.13 So if you're on those types of medicines, 00:02:16.16\00:02:18.03 check with your doctor. 00:02:18.07\00:02:19.40 And again, calcium channel blockers, it seems to effect 00:02:19.43\00:02:21.97 calcium channel blockers, too. 00:02:22.00\00:02:23.44 Those are a certain class of medicines 00:02:23.47\00:02:28.84 that lower blood pressure. 00:02:28.88\00:02:30.25 So those we have to be very careful with. 00:02:30.28\00:02:34.05 And if you're ever in doubt, ask your doctor. 00:02:34.08\00:02:37.12 If you're ever in doubt find it on... 00:02:37.15\00:02:39.19 The Internet has lots of great sites. 00:02:39.22\00:02:41.22 You can certainly go to our website: HeartwiseMinistry.org 00:02:41.26\00:02:44.99 where we answer questions all the time from 00:02:45.03\00:02:47.40 viewers and listeners. 00:02:47.43\00:02:48.76 So ginger is very valuable as a way to treat certain diseases 00:02:48.80\00:02:51.90 like migraines, cramps, nausea, inflammation, as well as maybe 00:02:51.93\00:02:56.60 it can prevent problems too, like bad breath, in my case. 00:02:56.64\00:02:59.31 Right, right. Yeah, you certainly want to work with your 00:02:59.34\00:03:01.18 doctor to make sure that your blood doesn't get too thin; 00:03:01.21\00:03:03.61 if your blood pressure gets too low. 00:03:03.65\00:03:05.08 Right. All these things you want to make sure it doesn't 00:03:05.11\00:03:07.95 interact with medications. 00:03:07.98\00:03:09.32 Now we have questions that come in to our website sometimes, 00:03:09.35\00:03:11.92 HeartwiseMinistries.org 00:03:11.95\00:03:14.09 You can ask your question if you have one there. 00:03:14.12\00:03:16.46 But people often are asking about supplements. 00:03:16.49\00:03:18.79 You take this ginger root as a supplement? 00:03:18.83\00:03:20.56 No, I don't. I do not take that as a supplement. 00:03:20.60\00:03:22.96 I take that as treatment. Treatment? Okay. 00:03:23.00\00:03:25.23 So I take that as treatment for inflammation, okay? 00:03:25.27\00:03:28.87 And that's what I take that for. 00:03:28.90\00:03:30.87 Now I could take it just as part of my nutrition, 00:03:30.91\00:03:33.21 because I want to feel good, or I like the taste, 00:03:33.24\00:03:35.71 or it has nutritional benefits. 00:03:35.74\00:03:37.18 But I don't take it as a supplement. 00:03:37.21\00:03:38.81 So what's the difference between treatment and supplement? 00:03:38.85\00:03:40.62 How do you, how do you... 00:03:40.65\00:03:41.98 Supplements are for deficiencies. Okay. 00:03:42.02\00:03:44.82 If you have a deficiency you need a supplement. Uh huh. 00:03:44.85\00:03:47.12 If you don't have a deficiency then you 00:03:47.16\00:03:48.92 don't need a supplement. Right. 00:03:48.96\00:03:50.33 Okay? So I don't necessarily have to have ginger. 00:03:50.36\00:03:52.99 Because you don't need ginger to live. Right. 00:03:53.03\00:03:54.86 I use ginger as a treatment, like a prescription medication 00:03:54.90\00:03:58.13 to change my chemistry. Uh huh. 00:03:58.17\00:03:59.87 So a lot of people ask, Do I need supplements? Yeah. 00:03:59.90\00:04:03.74 And usually if you're on a whole food plant based diet you get 00:04:03.77\00:04:07.98 almost everything you need in the food we eat. Okay. 00:04:08.01\00:04:11.98 You know, you get your trace elements. 00:04:12.01\00:04:13.48 You get your phytochemicals, all that. 00:04:13.52\00:04:15.28 Now people that are on the standard American diet: 00:04:15.32\00:04:18.72 lots of processed foods, lots of meats, lots of dairy, 00:04:18.75\00:04:22.46 they often do need supplements because they don't, 00:04:22.49\00:04:24.43 might not get enough of the trace elements we talked about, 00:04:24.46\00:04:27.36 all the fiber that we've talked about, 00:04:27.40\00:04:29.66 all those good things we get. 00:04:29.70\00:04:31.47 But some people do need supplements. 00:04:31.50\00:04:33.74 And one of the most common supplements that are needed 00:04:33.77\00:04:36.87 is Vitamin D. Okay, sure. 00:04:36.91\00:04:39.27 And Vitamin D is actually a prohormone. Okay? 00:04:39.31\00:04:42.58 People that live in high altitudes, like in Fairbanks, 00:04:42.61\00:04:46.41 Alaska, or wherever, they don't get out in the sun. 00:04:46.45\00:04:49.38 They don't get Vitamin D. 00:04:49.42\00:04:50.95 So if you don't need Vitamin D I recommend a supplement. 00:04:50.99\00:04:53.99 Because you don't have enough of this much needed substance. 00:04:54.02\00:04:57.43 So if you didn't get enough sun exposure you're at risk 00:04:57.46\00:05:00.00 and might need to take a supplement. 00:05:00.03\00:05:01.36 Vitamin D is good for bones, brain, blood vessels, 00:05:01.40\00:05:05.10 many things that need Vitamin D; every cell needs it. 00:05:05.13\00:05:07.94 So what I recommend if you don't get out in the sunshine, 00:05:07.97\00:05:10.57 take D3, a supplement, 2000 international units a day. 00:05:10.61\00:05:15.54 Now you can certainly have your blood tested, but I take it in 00:05:15.58\00:05:19.31 the wintertime, because my D levels get low. 00:05:19.35\00:05:21.92 And when it gets low you get cabin fever, your serotonin goes 00:05:21.95\00:05:25.52 down, depression might go up, inflammation, different things 00:05:25.55\00:05:29.29 in the body that need Vitamin D; bones might get weaker. 00:05:29.32\00:05:31.79 So I think that's a supplement that most, 00:05:31.83\00:05:34.10 many people need to take. 00:05:34.13\00:05:35.66 Now if you live in Hawaii, probably not. 00:05:35.70\00:05:38.87 You'd get plenty of sunshine. 00:05:38.90\00:05:40.24 If you live in Ecuador, probably not. That's right. 00:05:40.27\00:05:42.04 But if you live up in Alaska, probably yes. Sure. 00:05:42.07\00:05:44.84 Okay, another supplement: B12. 00:05:45.34\00:05:47.04 Have you heard of B12? I have. 00:05:47.08\00:05:48.61 Okay. B12 is actually something that we need that's 00:05:48.64\00:05:53.55 not made by plants. Uh huh. 00:05:53.58\00:05:55.38 We need B12 to make blood cells. 00:05:55.42\00:05:57.85 It keeps us from being in anemic, 00:05:57.89\00:05:59.25 helps support our nerves, helps support our brain. 00:05:59.29\00:06:03.06 So if you eat a... Originally this is from a microbe, 00:06:03.09\00:06:07.30 that's found in the earth, that blankets the earth. 00:06:07.33\00:06:10.60 For awhile, you know, a lot of times our food source gets it, 00:06:10.63\00:06:13.87 but nowadays we don't get enough B12. 00:06:13.90\00:06:17.14 Now recently, I really don't eat much processed foods at all. 00:06:17.17\00:06:20.88 I used to get B12 in my fortified soy milk, 00:06:20.91\00:06:24.41 almond milk, that. Right. 00:06:24.45\00:06:25.91 You get it in fortified foods. 00:06:25.95\00:06:27.58 But if you don't eat processed foods very much, 00:06:27.62\00:06:30.59 you might not get enough B12. 00:06:30.62\00:06:32.55 So B12 is a supplement that most people need to take. 00:06:32.59\00:06:36.26 And most people take about 2500 micrograms. 00:06:36.29\00:06:41.26 That's a very little amount a week. 00:06:41.30\00:06:43.00 A little bit of B12 will go a long way. 00:06:43.03\00:06:46.37 Some people get it in fortified foods like almond milk. 00:06:46.40\00:06:49.70 Some people get it in... nutritional yeast has it in it. 00:06:49.74\00:06:52.97 So B12 is a supplement that many people 00:06:53.01\00:06:55.98 that are whole food plant based need. 00:06:56.01\00:06:58.28 Now if you use soy milk, almond milk, nutritional yeast, 00:06:58.31\00:07:02.35 you might not need that. 00:07:02.38\00:07:03.72 But I'm starting to take it now since I moved away 00:07:03.75\00:07:06.42 from processed foods. 00:07:06.45\00:07:07.79 I don't get it so much in that. Right. 00:07:07.82\00:07:09.46 What's something else that might be needed? 00:07:09.49\00:07:11.66 Iodine for instance, iodine. 00:07:11.69\00:07:13.76 Okay, what is that needed for? 00:07:13.80\00:07:15.80 That's needed for your thyroid. Okay. 00:07:15.83\00:07:17.97 Now most people get iodine because in the 20's they started 00:07:18.00\00:07:21.60 putting iodine in the salt we use. 00:07:21.64\00:07:23.67 So most people that eat some type of processed foods, 00:07:23.71\00:07:27.38 of salt, or something get plenty of iodine in their diet. 00:07:27.41\00:07:31.21 But there's a few people that don't eat any processed 00:07:31.25\00:07:35.05 food, any salt at all. 00:07:35.08\00:07:36.89 They might want to eat some iodine. 00:07:36.95\00:07:39.52 And you can get in different foods. 00:07:39.55\00:07:42.09 You know, seaweed is a good source of iodine, if you want it 00:07:42.12\00:07:44.86 in food, and there's other food that has a little bit. 00:07:44.89\00:07:47.06 But some people have to take a supplement for that. Sure. 00:07:47.10\00:07:50.77 Now another thing that people might want to 00:07:50.80\00:07:53.00 supplement is fiber. 00:07:53.03\00:07:54.50 Did you know we need fiber in our body, and we quoted it 00:07:55.27\00:07:58.37 earlier that 97% of people don't get enough fiber. Right. 00:07:58.41\00:08:01.44 So if you don't get enough fiber, and you don't like to eat 00:08:01.48\00:08:04.55 fruits, and vegetables, nuts, and grains, 00:08:04.58\00:08:06.01 you might need some fiber in your diet. 00:08:06.05\00:08:08.75 And you can get that in many different fiber substitutes. 00:08:08.78\00:08:11.52 So those are the supplements that, depending on your 00:08:11.55\00:08:13.99 situation, that some people need. 00:08:14.02\00:08:16.16 Now all these other things, food is medicines, you know, 00:08:16.19\00:08:20.06 you don't actually have to have to survive. 00:08:20.10\00:08:22.46 You know, they don't cause disease. 00:08:22.50\00:08:23.83 You know, so these supplements, people take it. 00:08:23.87\00:08:26.67 Now if you take too many supplements can it be bad? 00:08:26.74\00:08:30.11 Well, if you had 400 French horns in the orchestra, 00:08:30.14\00:08:33.41 French horns aren't bad, but sometimes you have too many 00:08:33.48\00:08:36.01 French horns and it drowns out the other instruments. 00:08:36.04\00:08:38.58 The orchestra wouldn't sound very good. 00:08:38.61\00:08:39.95 Right.
