Four hundred years before Jesus walked the earth, 00:00:17.01\00:00:19.45 there was a physician named Hypocrites who said, 00:00:19.48\00:00:22.35 Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food. 00:00:22.38\00:00:25.19 And that's exactly what we're going to discuss 00:00:25.22\00:00:27.09 on today's program. 00:00:27.12\00:00:28.46 Stay with us. The Ultimate Prescription begins now. 00:00:28.49\00:00:30.79 I'm Dr. James Marcum. 00:00:31.29\00:00:33.19 Are you interested in discovering the reason why? 00:00:33.23\00:00:36.36 Do you want solutions to your health care problem? 00:00:36.43\00:00:39.57 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:00:39.60\00:00:42.14 Well, you're about to be given the Ultimate Prescription. 00:00:42.17\00:00:46.14 Hello, and welcome to the Ultimate Prescription. 00:00:48.44\00:00:50.85 I'm your host, Nick Evenson. 00:00:50.88\00:00:52.21 This program is dedicated to helping people understand better 00:00:52.25\00:00:55.52 God's design for our lives, and follow His plan for health. 00:00:55.58\00:00:58.49 Dr. Marcum is joining us here today, and we're going to be 00:00:58.52\00:01:01.42 discussing food as medicine. 00:01:01.46\00:01:03.43 Dr. Marcum, thanks for joining us today. 00:01:03.46\00:01:05.13 Well, I'm glad to be here, Nick, and thanks for hosting us. 00:01:05.16\00:01:07.83 Yeah, well... I'm glad you can come, too. 00:01:07.86\00:01:09.63 It's a good time here at the Ultimate Prescription. 00:01:09.66\00:01:11.37 Yeah, it takes two to banter. 00:01:11.43\00:01:12.90 You know, I used to try to do this by myself, 00:01:12.93\00:01:15.40 and it's never quite as interesting, you know? 00:01:15.44\00:01:17.84 It takes, you know... 00:01:17.87\00:01:19.21 And it's hard when you work on a limited budget. 00:01:19.24\00:01:21.54 You know, Dr. Oz, mercy! 00:01:21.61\00:01:23.35 He could do all sorts of fun things, you know. 00:01:23.38\00:01:25.15 He can actually have the budget to have all sorts of cool things 00:01:25.18\00:01:29.22 when he does it, but, you know, we just have to depend on 00:01:29.25\00:01:31.75 the gift God gives us; mostly information. 00:01:31.79\00:01:35.69 And we pray a lot. You know, I pray a lot that the people that 00:01:35.72\00:01:39.03 watch this, God will touch their hearts, and they'll find 00:01:39.09\00:01:41.93 something; that they'll find truth. 00:01:41.96\00:01:44.00 And that God will be the One that helps people understand, 00:01:44.03\00:01:47.77 and moves through these programs. 00:01:47.80\00:01:49.80 So we've been talking about all sorts of different foods, 00:01:49.84\00:01:53.11 and food as medicine. 00:01:53.14\00:01:54.48 And you talked about Dr. Hypocrites. 00:01:54.51\00:01:56.61 Yes, you know what? 00:01:56.64\00:01:57.98 In medical school... 00:01:58.01\00:01:59.35 Let me interrupt you for a second. 00:01:59.38\00:02:00.72 In medical school we take the Hippocratic Oath. 00:02:00.75\00:02:03.15 I've heard of that. 00:02:03.18\00:02:04.52 And I don't usually take oaths, but I can remember, 00:02:04.55\00:02:07.12 I graduated from the University of Texas in 00:02:07.16\00:02:09.19 San Antonio in medical school. 00:02:09.22\00:02:10.79 You know, I went to college in Austin, and then I did medical 00:02:10.83\00:02:14.23 school in San Antonio. 00:02:14.26\00:02:15.60 And Dr. Antonia Novello was the Surgeon General at that time. 00:02:15.63\00:02:21.04 And she, you know, was at our graduating class. 00:02:21.07\00:02:23.81 And we gave the Hippocratic Oath. 00:02:23.87\00:02:26.11 And part of that oath is, first do no harm. That's right. 00:02:26.14\00:02:30.58 And we look at the world we live in, and sometimes I wonder 00:02:30.61\00:02:34.98 whether people aren't doing each other harm. 00:02:35.05\00:02:37.09 And if you'll look at the evidence, there seems to be more 00:02:37.12\00:02:40.42 cancer, more heart disease, more obesity, more diabetes, 00:02:40.46\00:02:43.69 more joint problems. 00:02:43.73\00:02:45.06 Right now one in three people have mental 00:02:45.09\00:02:46.90 health problems, Nick. 00:02:46.93\00:02:48.26 That's a staggering number. 00:02:48.30\00:02:49.63 That's scary. Chronic disease keeps going up. 00:02:49.66\00:02:51.37 And you wonder, you know, we took this oath, 00:02:51.40\00:02:53.54 first do no harm; I'm wondering sometimes whether we're not 00:02:53.57\00:02:56.94 doing more harm than good. 00:02:56.97\00:02:58.31 And there's a lot of studies now coming out that says the number 00:02:58.34\00:03:01.38 one cause of death in America might be medications. 00:03:01.41\00:03:04.71 We hear about all of these narcotic deaths, and overdose 00:03:04.75\00:03:07.75 deaths, and all of these things. 00:03:07.78\00:03:09.12 And that's why, you know, I've started searching in the Bible 00:03:09.15\00:03:12.72 for answers to health problems. 00:03:12.75\00:03:14.66 And just praying that the key physician, the key treatment 00:03:14.69\00:03:18.86 that each one of us wants is to have that relationship 00:03:18.89\00:03:22.23 with the heavenly Father. 00:03:22.26\00:03:23.60 That's really the Ultimate Prescription, because we never 00:03:23.63\00:03:26.33 know when our genetics are going to turn on something bad, 00:03:26.37\00:03:29.80 a semi might come and kill us; something bad might happen. 00:03:29.84\00:03:33.21 But as long as we have that ultimate relationship, 00:03:33.24\00:03:35.91 that Ultimate Prescription, God's promised that He's going 00:03:35.94\00:03:39.51 to give us healing. 00:03:39.55\00:03:40.88 It's just where, when, and how. 00:03:40.92\00:03:42.25 And when you have that in the back of your mind, 00:03:42.28\00:03:44.45 some of the fears that we have... 00:03:44.49\00:03:46.49 You know, people are scared about things nowadays. 00:03:46.52\00:03:47.86 They're scared about politics, they scared about being sick. 00:03:48.66\00:03:52.09 We can remember in Philippians, you know, 00:03:52.13\00:03:54.10 Be anxious about nothing. 00:03:54.13\00:03:55.76 God didn't create a spirit of fear, and we can turn to Him 00:03:55.80\00:03:59.27 to help our chemistry. 00:03:59.30\00:04:00.64 And when we have less fears, and less anxiety about 00:04:00.67\00:04:03.07 everything, this helps our health improve as well. 00:04:03.10\00:04:05.54 Right, right. Now on this particular program we're talking 00:04:05.57\00:04:08.51 about food as medicine. 00:04:08.54\00:04:09.88 And Dr. Hippocrates, he was the first one to talk about this; 00:04:09.91\00:04:12.81 food is medicine, medicine is food. 00:04:12.85\00:04:14.25 How do you think he came to this realization that food was so 00:04:14.32\00:04:17.22 vital to our health? 00:04:17.25\00:04:18.59 I don't know, but he was way ahead of his time. 00:04:18.62\00:04:22.36 And I know that he had different foods. 00:04:22.39\00:04:25.63 And what we've tried to do is we've tried to find food, 00:04:25.69\00:04:28.26 and the specific studies that support their use, 00:04:28.33\00:04:31.33 and that teach people how to apply it. 00:04:31.37\00:04:33.13 This isn't new. You know Daniel and his friends ate 00:04:33.17\00:04:36.17 things that grow, and they were ten times smarter, 00:04:36.20\00:04:39.07 and they had better countenance, and, you know, 00:04:39.11\00:04:41.94 a lot of different things. 00:04:41.98\00:04:43.31 So this program we've decided to devote to ginger. 00:04:43.35\00:04:46.88 That's right, and we've got some ginger here you can see. 00:04:46.92\00:04:49.82 This is the ginger root itself. 00:04:49.85\00:04:51.52 And we also have here the supplement. 00:04:51.55\00:04:54.42 You can take it is pills or in the raw form. 00:04:54.46\00:04:56.99 And it actually, it smells pretty strong. 00:04:57.03\00:04:59.49 It's pretty fantastic. 00:04:59.53\00:05:00.86 I'm going to cut a little bit off here. 00:05:00.90\00:05:02.23 It'll just get a little bit. 00:05:02.26\00:05:03.60 It's kind of got a nice ah... 00:05:03.63\00:05:04.97 Can I just take a few of one. 00:05:05.00\00:05:06.33 Try a little? Well, I want to smell it. 00:05:06.37\00:05:07.70 I want to smell it. 00:05:07.74\00:05:09.07 Here, try that. Yeah, it has a pop to it. 00:05:09.10\00:05:13.01 What do you think would happen if I just stuck it in my mouth? 00:05:13.04\00:05:15.61 I'd give it a shot. Let's try! 00:05:15.64\00:05:16.98 I'll stick it in my mouth here. 00:05:17.01\00:05:18.35 I wonder if it comes in different strength. 00:05:19.41\00:05:21.25 That is not the way I recommend you eat it. 00:05:21.28\00:05:23.05 No, I don't either! Whew! 00:05:23.08\00:05:24.42 But ginger is pretty potent stuff. 00:05:24.45\00:05:26.49 It's very strong. And as I cut it open there, it's a root, 00:05:26.52\00:05:29.62 but it's actually pretty juicy. 00:05:29.66\00:05:31.46 It has a pop to it, you know? 00:05:31.49\00:05:33.19 It has a little bit of warm to it. 00:05:33.23\00:05:34.60 I am probably not going to finish just a small little piece 00:05:34.63\00:05:37.53 like that without some other kind of food with it. 00:05:37.57\00:05:39.63 No we have to make it through. 00:05:39.67\00:05:41.00 You know, I've had people that have ginger shots. 00:05:41.04\00:05:43.61 You know they make it in beverages now? Right, yep. 00:05:43.64\00:05:46.17 They add it to different foods, and, you know, 00:05:46.24\00:05:48.68 lots of different ways to have it. 00:05:48.71\00:05:50.05 A lot of people bring it this way, and this is actually 00:05:50.08\00:05:52.61 mine from home where I take ginger root. Okay. 00:05:52.65\00:05:55.15 You can actually break it and put it on different things. 00:05:55.18\00:05:58.05 Right. So I take it that way, because, you know, sometimes 00:05:58.09\00:06:00.92 this is just not convenient. 00:06:00.96\00:06:02.39 I know the root itself is probably a purer form. 00:06:02.42\00:06:05.59 It gets better absorbed. 00:06:05.63\00:06:06.96 But sometimes I can't have that, and I take it, 00:06:07.00\00:06:09.96 the ginger supplement. 00:06:10.00\00:06:11.33 So I'm going to make an interesting observation here. 00:06:11.37\00:06:13.50 This ginger root, on the very front of the bottle here 00:06:13.54\00:06:15.64 it says, For digestive support. 00:06:15.70\00:06:18.14 Promotes GI comfort and cardiovascular functions. 00:06:18.17\00:06:21.71 Yes, it does. So tell us, what all is ginger good for? 00:06:21.74\00:06:25.21 What I've tried to do is, you know, there's many ways that 00:06:25.25\00:06:29.15 food helps our bodies that we don't even understand. Uh huh. 00:06:29.18\00:06:32.49 But there are some studies that have been done to prove it. 00:06:32.52\00:06:35.76 Okay? And I want to talk to people about the specific 00:06:35.79\00:06:38.63 studies of ginger that show beyond doubt 00:06:38.66\00:06:41.93 that ginger is very useful. Okay. 00:06:41.96\00:06:44.00 The first thing I want to show is that recently, 00:06:44.03\00:06:46.63 for years we've known about ginger and headaches. Okay. 00:06:46.67\00:06:50.31 Up to 12% of the population suffer from migraine headaches. 00:06:50.34\00:06:54.41 That's very debilitating. 00:06:54.44\00:06:56.51 And years ago they had case reports. 00:06:56.54\00:07:00.38 And what a case report in medicine is they just 00:07:00.42\00:07:02.78 describe different people that they give something to 00:07:02.82\00:07:05.15 and they get better. 00:07:05.19\00:07:06.52 And that was the first thing done. 00:07:06.55\00:07:08.12 They did case reports on ginger and they noticed that when you 00:07:08.19\00:07:11.13 had ginger mixed 1/4 teaspoon with water, it decreased the 00:07:11.16\00:07:15.73 amount of migraine headaches. 00:07:15.76\00:07:17.10 Well, that was good, but case reports aren't the best studies. 00:07:17.13\00:07:20.84 The best studies is when you compare groups, okay? Sure. 00:07:20.87\00:07:23.84 Double blinded studies. 00:07:23.87\00:07:25.27 So they did a double blinded study with ginger, 00:07:25.31\00:07:27.94 and this was reported in the Journal of Phytotherapy in 2014, 00:07:27.98\00:07:32.81 and they studied migraine headaches. 00:07:32.85\00:07:35.35 One group received the standard medicine called 00:07:35.38\00:07:38.15 Imatrex, or Sumatriptan. 00:07:38.19\00:07:40.16 The other one got 1/8 teaspoon of ginger. 00:07:40.19\00:07:43.32 And guess what? The ginger patients did just as well 00:07:43.36\00:07:48.13 as the medicine patients. Really? 00:07:48.16\00:07:51.03 Yeah. So ginger has been shown to be an effective treatment 00:07:51.07\00:07:54.14 for migraine headaches. 00:07:54.17\00:07:55.50 So a lot of people, you know, when they feel a migraine coming 00:07:55.54\00:07:59.11 on they mix some ginger with some water, and they take it, 00:07:59.14\00:08:02.14 and it helps out a lot. 00:08:02.18\00:08:03.51 The mechanism's probably some type of inflammation or health. 00:08:03.55\00:08:08.42 Like I say, there's so many chemicals in these plants that 00:08:08.45\00:08:10.72 we don't know what all these phytochemicals are doing. Right. 00:08:10.75\00:08:14.06 Another thing that in the studies have been shown that it 00:08:14.09\00:08:17.53 helps women that have heavy menstrual cramps. 00:08:17.56\00:08:20.56 Uh huh. Just taking those. 00:08:20.60\00:08:22.00 Now the studies show that you have to take it 00:08:22.03\00:08:23.77 about three times a day. 00:08:23.80\00:08:25.13 But it lowers the menstrual cramps just as effective as 00:08:25.17\00:08:29.17 the medication called Ibuprofen or Motrin. Okay. 00:08:29.20\00:08:32.94 So it's another thing that it helps. 00:08:32.97\00:08:34.31 In 1982 they showed that ginger was just as good as Dramamine. 00:08:34.34\00:08:38.68 This was published in Lancet in lowering the rate of nausea. 00:08:38.71\00:08:43.39 Yeah. So you're sick at your stomach, especially motion 00:08:43.45\00:08:46.79 sickness in the car, or on a boat... 00:08:46.82\00:08:48.92 Or on a boat, Yep. Yep. 00:08:48.96\00:08:50.29 ...or chemotherapy, or radiation. 00:08:50.33\00:08:51.89 Or after surgery what they would do, they would is use 00:08:51.96\00:08:54.76 ginger to treat nausea. 00:08:54.80\00:08:56.53 So it helps a lot of things. 00:08:56.56\00:08:58.13 Then they did this study with inflammation in the body. 00:08:58.20\00:09:01.30 You know, everyone has inflammation. Sure. 00:09:01.34\00:09:03.37 And that inflammation might be in the bowels. 00:09:03.41\00:09:05.44 It might be in the a joint. 00:09:05.47\00:09:07.28 You know, that's the most common, in joints. 00:09:07.31\00:09:08.98 The joints just wear out. 00:09:09.01\00:09:10.35 Well, they took 250 milligrams twice a day. 00:09:10.38\00:09:13.45 Now this is actually 550, so this was a dose. 00:09:13.48\00:09:16.82 So they took the equivalent of one of these a day, 00:09:16.85\00:09:19.09 and it lowered arthritic pain just as much 00:09:19.15\00:09:22.29 as an anti-inflammatory. 00:09:22.32\00:09:24.03 And they noticed it didn't have the side effects. Right. 00:09:24.06\00:09:26.70 So I've had some inflammatory problems before, 00:09:26.73\00:09:30.13 and I take this amount a day to help inflammation, 00:09:30.17\00:09:33.64 as well as turmeric, which are very good, 00:09:33.67\00:09:35.70 as well as beans and greens. 00:09:35.74\00:09:37.41 And that's almost taken the inflammation out of my body now. 00:09:37.44\00:09:40.81 Oh, that's great. It's really amazing. 00:09:40.84\00:09:42.74 It also has antioxidant abilities, which helps aging. 00:09:42.78\00:09:48.32 So ginger could help aging by antioxidants. 00:09:48.35\00:09:51.12 So it helps many different things in the body. 00:09:51.15\00:09:53.99 Some people think that it might even help our gut 00:09:54.02\00:09:56.83 bacteria do better: ginger. 00:09:56.86\00:09:58.76 So ginger helps on many different levels, 00:09:58.79\00:10:01.26 doing many different things. 00:10:01.30\00:10:02.63 And just, I think once you get used to that taste, 00:10:02.66\00:10:05.87 it really can add some pop to different foods we eat. 00:10:05.90\00:10:09.07 Yeah, yeah, definitely! 00:10:09.10\00:10:10.44 And I definitely would add it to other foods, because by itself 00:10:10.47\00:10:13.54 that is really strong, that is really strong. Yeah. 00:10:13.58\00:10:16.34 We recently had a chance to visit our friend, 00:10:16.38\00:10:18.41 Kristina McFeeters, at Kristina's Kitchen, 00:10:18.45\00:10:20.38 and she did a cooking demonstration for us 00:10:20.42\00:10:22.28 showing us how she uses ginger root in some of her recipes. 00:10:22.32\00:10:25.89 Let's have a look now. 00:10:25.92\00:10:27.26 Welcome to Kristina's Kitchen. 00:10:28.42\00:10:30.29 I'm Kristina McFeeters. 00:10:30.33\00:10:32.19 Today we're going to explore one of my favorite ways to 00:10:32.23\00:10:35.50 incorporate ginger into my diet. 00:10:35.53\00:10:37.33 Ginger is a root that grows, and it is a spice that's commonly 00:10:37.37\00:10:43.30 used in a lot of things. 00:10:43.34\00:10:44.87 We find it in cookies, curries, and many other ingredients. 00:10:44.91\00:10:50.11 You can also get dried ginger, called crystallized ginger. 00:10:50.15\00:10:55.32 You can also get ginger powder in your spice section 00:10:55.35\00:10:59.35 in the grocery store. 00:10:59.42\00:11:00.76 And then if you go to a health food store, or a specialty store 00:11:00.79\00:11:04.89 you can get ginger capsules, and you can also get ginger tea. 00:11:04.96\00:11:09.83 Today we are going to use fresh ginger to make some amazing 00:11:09.86\00:11:14.74 Apricot Ginger Energy Bites. 00:11:14.77\00:11:17.07 To start out you will need a a food processor. 00:11:17.11\00:11:21.04 You will notice this is a very small food processor. 00:11:21.08\00:11:24.15 And so I am giving you a small recipe. 00:11:24.18\00:11:25.98 If your food processor is larger, 00:11:26.01\00:11:28.45 you can increase the recipe. It's very simple. 00:11:28.48\00:11:31.82 You will need a 1/4 cup packed with pitted dates. 00:11:32.45\00:11:38.69 A 1/4 cup packed with dried apricots. 00:11:39.16\00:11:44.13 A 1/4 cup of almonds. 00:11:45.73\00:11:47.64 And a 1/4 cup of unsweetened, shredded coconut. 00:11:49.14\00:11:52.74 Now we will add our fresh ginger. 00:11:53.81\00:11:57.01 And to do that, I'm just going to peel a little bit 00:11:59.05\00:12:02.18 of the outside, and we are going to grate it. 00:12:02.22\00:12:05.19 Ah, shred it you might say. 00:12:05.25\00:12:07.59 Ginger, when it's fresh, is very fibrous; 00:12:07.62\00:12:10.99 has long strings in it. 00:12:11.06\00:12:12.76 So you don't want to just throw in a chunk of ginger. 00:12:12.79\00:12:16.30 We're going to use this small grater. 00:12:17.77\00:12:20.47 And we don't need very much in this recipe, 00:12:23.74\00:12:26.07 because it's a small recipe. 00:12:26.11\00:12:27.74 We just need a 1/4 teaspoon. 00:12:27.78\00:12:29.34 There we have a 1/4 teaspoon of fresh grated ginger. 00:12:34.38\00:12:37.89 And if you like lots of ginger, you can use up to a 00:12:42.49\00:12:45.93 1/2 teaspoon of fresh ginger. 00:12:45.96\00:12:47.56 A 1/4 teaspoon just gives it a kick; a 1/2 teaspoon is going 00:12:47.60\00:12:50.97 to give it a stronger ginger flavor. 00:12:51.03\00:12:52.87 So now the last thing is I like to just put a pinch of salt in. 00:12:52.90\00:12:57.51 It doesn't take very much. 00:12:57.54\00:12:59.14 And then we will grind this until it's very, not completely 00:13:00.54\00:13:05.98 smooth, but until it's got small chunks. 00:13:06.01\00:13:09.38 Then after it's done grinding we'll add just a little bit 00:13:09.42\00:13:12.62 of water to hold it together. 00:13:12.65\00:13:14.02 Now we're going to add about a tablespoon of water; 00:13:18.39\00:13:21.93 just to help moisten it so the balls will stick together. 00:13:21.96\00:13:25.87 And we'll mix that up. 00:13:29.80\00:13:31.14 Okay, we're done. We're going to pour this into our bowl. 00:13:37.41\00:13:44.29 Now we're going to make the balls. 00:13:51.89\00:13:54.13 We're going to form them. 00:13:54.16\00:13:55.96 And this is so much fun, especially if you have kids. 00:13:57.03\00:14:00.74 Get them involved rolling them out. 00:14:00.77\00:14:03.47 Chances are they will probably eat them before they 00:14:03.51\00:14:06.31 put them on the plate. 00:14:06.37\00:14:07.71 And that's perfectly fine. 00:14:07.74\00:14:09.08 You can refrigerate them afterwards. 00:14:09.11\00:14:11.11 You can put them in the freezer for a longer storage. 00:14:11.15\00:14:14.02 You can eat them right away, or whatever you 00:14:14.05\00:14:16.58 want to do with them. 00:14:16.62\00:14:17.95 See how simple that is? 00:14:18.25\00:14:19.69 And just think, you're adding amazing anti-inflammatory, 00:14:19.72\00:14:23.63 nutritious, delicious food to your diet. 00:14:23.66\00:14:26.70 Be sure to try this at home. 00:14:26.73\00:14:28.50 Yeah, Kristina, we really appreciate her doing these 00:14:30.30\00:14:32.83 cooking demos, because making this easy, 00:14:32.87\00:14:35.40 making it applicable, showing people how to get ginger 00:14:35.44\00:14:36.77 into your diet is important to make it practical for people. 00:14:38.87\00:14:41.41 Well, the next time I'm in McCurry County I'm going to stop 00:14:41.44\00:14:45.05 by her restaurant, and I'm going to get 00:14:45.08\00:14:47.75 one of these gingers. 00:14:47.78\00:14:49.12 And you know what? It's, you should take it before... 00:14:49.15\00:14:52.79 Remember we said it prevents nausea? Yeah, yeah, right. 00:14:52.82\00:14:55.79 So if I get something I don't like there, guess what? 00:14:55.82\00:14:58.76 I'm protected. That's right. 00:14:58.79\00:15:00.13 That's right, plenty of ginger. 00:15:00.16\00:15:01.50 Well, I shouldn't say that about Kristina. She's wonderful. 00:15:01.53\00:15:03.37 Yep, she's great. There's more to come. 00:15:05.30\00:15:06.63 We're going to talk more about food as medicine in just a 00:15:06.67\00:15:08.70 moment, but we've got to take a quick break, 00:15:08.74\00:15:10.07 so stay right there. 00:15:10.11\00:15:11.44 We'll be right back. 00:15:11.47\00:15:12.81
