Welcome back to the Ultimate Prescription. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 I'm your host, Nick Evenson, and on today's program 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.43 Dr. Marcum and I are discussing food as medicine. 00:00:04.47\00:00:07.87 And specifically we're talking about beans, lentils, 00:00:07.90\00:00:11.41 all kinds of legumes. 00:00:11.44\00:00:12.77 And, Dr. Marcum, these are some powerful foods. 00:00:12.81\00:00:15.24 And I've got a fun fact about beans. 00:00:15.28\00:00:17.61 Okay, let's hear it. 00:00:17.65\00:00:18.98 I looked this up earlier, and it said that back in the 1980's 00:00:19.01\00:00:22.52 an archeologist working in New Mexico came upon a clay pot 00:00:22.55\00:00:26.15 that had been sealed with pine tar containing bean seeds 00:00:26.19\00:00:29.82 that were 1500 years old. 00:00:29.86\00:00:32.26 Oh! That's pretty old. 00:00:32.29\00:00:33.63 And after all that they planted them and they grew, 00:00:33.76\00:00:36.46 they sprouted. Wow! 00:00:36.50\00:00:37.83 So that's pretty impressive, you know. 00:00:37.87\00:00:39.20 The bean is very resilient. 00:00:39.23\00:00:40.57 Yeah, and they can grow, too. 00:00:40.60\00:00:42.40 Yeah, yeah. Also the world's largest bean pods can grow 00:00:42.44\00:00:47.11 up to five feet long. 00:00:47.14\00:00:48.48 And I'd be interested to see one of those. 00:00:48.51\00:00:50.81 So if you're sitting at home, and your know what I'm talking 00:00:50.85\00:00:52.45 about, it's called the E. gigas bean pod, and it comes from 00:00:52.48\00:00:56.08 Central America, in the tropics. 00:00:56.12\00:00:57.92 So if you're sitting at home and you know about this, 00:00:57.95\00:00:59.75 get on our website and contact us: HeartWiseMinistries. org 00:00:59.79\00:01:02.99 Tell us more about it. 00:01:03.02\00:01:04.36 I'd love to see one. 00:01:04.39\00:01:05.73 Wow! I'd like to see one, too. 00:01:05.76\00:01:07.50 That would be pretty cool; a huge bean pod. 00:01:07.53\00:01:09.26 Would you eat it? 00:01:09.30\00:01:10.63 Well, maybe. I don't know. 00:01:10.67\00:01:12.00 If some, if the local prepared it for me, you bet I would. 00:01:12.03\00:01:14.40 Well, if you ate it you might help get things like magnesium, 00:01:14.44\00:01:19.34 and iron, and potassium, which would help your 00:01:19.37\00:01:23.31 cardiovascular system. 00:01:23.35\00:01:24.71 It might lower your estrogen levels in your body, 00:01:24.75\00:01:28.42 which might improve your risk of getting breast cancer, 00:01:28.45\00:01:30.95 if you are a woman. 00:01:30.99\00:01:32.32 It might help improve your getting a clot. 00:01:32.35\00:01:34.49 We've talked about all the colorectal cancers. 00:01:34.52\00:01:37.09 So beans are a treatment for disease. 00:01:37.13\00:01:39.23 You know, you can prescribe beans as... 00:01:39.26\00:01:41.30 And I prescribe beans in my practice all the time. 00:01:41.33\00:01:44.07 Uh huh. Eat more beans. 00:01:44.10\00:01:45.43 Now one quick question. 00:01:45.47\00:01:46.80 You mentioned earlier about trace elements. Yeah. 00:01:46.84\00:01:49.10 Are these just some of the minerals that are found 00:01:49.14\00:01:50.91 in small quantities, or what are trace elements? 00:01:50.94\00:01:52.31 Yes, those are minerals that our body needs. 00:01:52.34\00:01:54.81 You know, like we don't need a lot of zinc, 00:01:54.84\00:01:56.85 but we do need it in our body. 00:01:56.88\00:01:58.91 Potassium, different types of magnesium, those are elements, 00:01:58.95\00:02:03.69 you know, Folate things like that, those are... 00:02:03.72\00:02:06.86 Iron would be considered, you know, those are natural 00:02:06.89\00:02:10.06 occurring elements, but we need it in our body. 00:02:10.09\00:02:11.99 Iron, of course, we need for our blood. Right. 00:02:12.03\00:02:14.16 You don't have iron you get anemic. 00:02:14.20\00:02:15.96 The prostate seems to need zinc. 00:02:16.03\00:02:17.73 So potassium and magnesium are needed for the nerve cells 00:02:17.77\00:02:21.50 in our heart, and different; every cell in our body 00:02:21.54\00:02:24.01 needs these chemicals. 00:02:24.04\00:02:25.37 So these are trace elements that we need to get from somewhere. 00:02:25.41\00:02:28.64 And unfortunately, you know, if we eat animals we get it 00:02:28.68\00:02:32.28 secondhand at best. Right. 00:02:32.31\00:02:33.78 You know, not as good. 00:02:33.82\00:02:35.25 So there's other things I want to talk about beans that 00:02:35.28\00:02:38.35 help us tremendously. 00:02:38.39\00:02:39.72 Yeah, what are some of the other conditions that 00:02:39.75\00:02:41.16 might be benefited? 00:02:41.19\00:02:42.52 If you are overweight beans can be a treatment for obesity. 00:02:42.56\00:02:47.03 Really? So would you rather have a gastric bypass surgery? 00:02:47.10\00:02:52.20 Would you rather take a weight loss pill? 00:02:52.23\00:02:54.67 Or would you rather eat more beans? 00:02:54.70\00:02:57.01 In fact, they studied this in 2012 in England, and the British 00:02:57.04\00:03:01.71 Journal of Nutrition pointed out that beans help lose weight 00:03:01.74\00:03:06.41 as much as caloric restriction. 00:03:06.45\00:03:08.72 Really? Yeah. Why would that be? 00:03:08.75\00:03:10.95 Well, I mean, I didn't read it word for word, but I think beans 00:03:10.99\00:03:15.32 help you fill up, so you're not as hungry, 00:03:15.36\00:03:17.39 so you don't eat as much. 00:03:17.43\00:03:18.76 It helps the chemistry in many other ways. 00:03:18.79\00:03:21.53 It helps speed up your metabolism some. Right. 00:03:21.56\00:03:24.37 So there's lots of things that beans help with. 00:03:24.40\00:03:27.17 So beans can help you lose weight. 00:03:27.20\00:03:29.04 Studies have also shown that beans help you 00:03:29.07\00:03:32.24 with your blood pressure; can lower blood pressure. 00:03:32.27\00:03:34.71 Is that because of the composition of protein 00:03:34.74\00:03:37.71 carbohydrates in it? 00:03:37.75\00:03:39.08 No, it's lots of reasons. 00:03:39.11\00:03:40.45 One is because of the fiber. 00:03:40.48\00:03:41.82 One... It probably works on multiple mechanisms. 00:03:41.85\00:03:43.89 It effects potassium, and the potassium effects 00:03:43.92\00:03:46.22 blood pressure. Okay. 00:03:46.25\00:03:47.59 And sometimes people that eat beans don't eat things that 00:03:47.62\00:03:50.16 raise the blood pressure. 00:03:50.19\00:03:51.76 We know that things that are processed, and preserved 00:03:51.79\00:03:54.26 raise blood pressure, because they usually have 00:03:54.30\00:03:56.06 higher sodium contents. Right. 00:03:56.10\00:03:58.23 And a lot of our potassium we get in, good potassium we 00:03:58.30\00:04:02.10 get in our vegetables. 00:04:02.17\00:04:03.94 A lot of people don't eat as many vegetables as we used to. 00:04:03.97\00:04:06.68 Right. We get valuable substances from the earth. 00:04:06.71\00:04:09.04 You know, that's why they call them elements, 00:04:09.08\00:04:11.35 because we get them from the earth. 00:04:11.41\00:04:12.75 These trace elements, these vegetables pull into them, 00:04:12.78\00:04:15.32 and what's a part of the vegetable in themself. 00:04:15.35\00:04:17.75 But I want to talk a little bit about the flora in the bowel. 00:04:17.79\00:04:21.86 You know, within you is this big tube that runs through 00:04:21.89\00:04:24.49 you that you pull nutrients out of, and it helps... 00:04:24.53\00:04:27.90 In the bowel you have good and bad flora, or the bacteria. 00:04:27.93\00:04:31.53 Right. There about, there's trillions of these in the bowel. 00:04:31.57\00:04:35.24 There's more DNA going on in the bowel than the rest 00:04:35.27\00:04:39.47 of the body combined. 00:04:39.51\00:04:40.84 And this DNA makes things, it regulates things. 00:04:40.88\00:04:44.05 So you've heard a lot about prebiotics, probiotics, 00:04:44.08\00:04:47.52 different things that regulates this biosphere, or this whole 00:04:47.55\00:04:51.95 zoological society that lives in our bowel. 00:04:51.99\00:04:54.79 It's scary to think of a trillion different things 00:04:54.82\00:04:57.83 living in your bowel that has DNA that are doing things. 00:04:57.86\00:05:00.73 It seems that there's a lot that could go wrong. 00:05:00.76\00:05:02.16 Yes, a lot could go wrong, but a lot could go right, too. Sure. 00:05:02.20\00:05:05.97 We know that people that eat fiber, and beans have fiber, 00:05:06.00\00:05:09.34 greens have fiber. 00:05:09.40\00:05:10.74 People that eat lots of fiber, when it gets into the bowel 00:05:10.77\00:05:14.04 it makes a chemical called butyrate. 00:05:14.08\00:05:16.85 And butyrate is the food that tends to feed our good flora. 00:05:16.88\00:05:21.78 So our good flora gets increased, so the good flora 00:05:21.82\00:05:24.99 helps keep out bad things. 00:05:25.02\00:05:26.45 The bad flora also tends to make inflammation, 00:05:26.49\00:05:29.59 and other bad things happen. 00:05:29.62\00:05:30.96 So just eating beans help your good flora grow. 00:05:30.99\00:05:33.63 When your good flora grows, less inflammation. 00:05:33.66\00:05:36.40 It regulates things that go in and out of our body 00:05:36.43\00:05:39.13 to a greater degree. 00:05:39.17\00:05:40.50 Even our brain chemistry can be improved when our 00:05:40.54\00:05:43.94 good flora improves. 00:05:44.01\00:05:45.34 Depression can come from the bowel. 00:05:45.37\00:05:46.94 Anxiety can come from the bowel. 00:05:46.98\00:05:48.88 Different chemicals like dopamine, serotonin. 00:05:48.94\00:05:51.81 So beans have an enormous ability to help our body 00:05:51.85\00:05:55.05 just from the fiber aspect, separate from the cancer aspect, 00:05:55.08\00:05:58.75 separate than the trace element aspects. 00:05:58.82\00:06:00.96 All of these things beans can help us with. 00:06:00.99\00:06:03.02 There's so many different ways that beans benefit us. 00:06:03.09\00:06:05.43 I'm going to write a prescription for beans for 00:06:05.49\00:06:07.76 you today, Nick, and you can go and eat some tonight. 00:06:07.80\00:06:10.67 Well, I will. I will for sure. 00:06:10.73\00:06:12.10 I hope so. Alright. 00:06:12.13\00:06:13.47 We're going to take a look now at a short clip from Dr. Marcum 00:06:13.50\00:06:16.00 quoting Bible Prescriptions for Life. 00:06:16.04\00:06:18.07 And then Dr. Marcum's going to share with us about that. 00:06:18.11\00:06:20.34 So let's have a look. 00:06:20.38\00:06:21.71 I'm Dr. James Marcum with your Biblical Prescription for Life. 00:06:23.11\00:06:27.48 A patient with type 2 diabetes came in the other day and wanted 00:06:27.52\00:06:31.82 to take less medications. 00:06:31.85\00:06:33.76 I referred her to this Biblical Prescription 00:06:33.82\00:06:36.79 for Life found in Genesis. 00:06:36.83\00:06:38.73 When we walk, both physical walk and spiritual walk, 00:06:44.50\00:06:48.80 studies have shown it helps lower our blood sugar. 00:06:48.84\00:06:53.11 When we physically walk it helps our insulin receptors do better, 00:06:53.14\00:06:57.31 lowers the chance of developing long term diabetes. 00:06:57.35\00:07:00.58 When we walk with God, Dr. Andrew Newburg says that 00:07:00.62\00:07:03.82 that lowers some of the cortisol in our body, 00:07:03.85\00:07:06.25 which lowers blood sugar. 00:07:06.29\00:07:07.82 So if you want to lower your blood sugar naturally, 00:07:07.86\00:07:10.69 walk in nature, and walk with God. 00:07:10.73\00:07:13.86 I'm Dr. James Marcum, and this is your 00:07:13.90\00:07:17.03 Biblical Prescription for Life. 00:07:17.07\00:07:19.43 That's a really great message, Dr. Marcum. 00:07:21.87\00:07:23.94 And if you'd like to learn more you can visit the website: 00:07:23.97\00:07:26.37 And there's a special gift there. 00:07:30.45\00:07:32.18 You can download the free first chapter of the book, 00:07:32.21\00:07:35.42 and get a feel for it. 00:07:35.45\00:07:37.02 There's so many things that are important to our health 00:07:37.05\00:07:39.15 besides just nutrition. 00:07:39.22\00:07:40.69 You know, we're focusing on food in this show. 00:07:40.72\00:07:43.22 But tell us a little bit about Biblical Prescriptions, 00:07:43.26\00:07:45.73 and why this is needed. 00:07:45.79\00:07:47.13 Well, in this Bible Study what we've tried to do at 00:07:47.16\00:07:50.77 Heartwise Ministries is incorporate a lot of material 00:07:50.83\00:07:54.24 into something that's doable, that people can take 00:07:54.27\00:07:57.61 one step at a time.
