00:00:13.48\00:00:15.68 What kind of foods have we brought 00:00:15.71\00:00:17.05 that we're gonna talk about? 00:00:17.08\00:00:18.41 You know, you know, 00:00:18.45\00:00:19.78 there are so many different foods 00:00:19.81\00:00:21.15 we can talk about, 00:00:21.18\00:00:22.52 but what I wanna do is talk about specific foods 00:00:22.55\00:00:25.45 and studies that have been done that proves, 00:00:25.49\00:00:28.12 proves beyond a doubt that these foods, 00:00:28.16\00:00:30.13 the chemicals in them 00:00:30.16\00:00:31.49 can be used to treat certain conditions. 00:00:31.53\00:00:34.20 And I had a gentleman that came to the office 00:00:34.23\00:00:36.73 not too long ago 00:00:36.77\00:00:38.10 and he suffered from Gout, okay. 00:00:38.13\00:00:39.93 Now what is gout? 00:00:39.97\00:00:41.30 You know, gout is a very painful condition 00:00:41.34\00:00:43.97 that many people have 00:00:44.01\00:00:45.54 where the body makes excess uric acid, 00:00:45.57\00:00:48.81 and the uric acid gets in a joint usually 00:00:48.84\00:00:51.41 and it causes lots of inflammation, 00:00:51.45\00:00:53.62 lots of pain. 00:00:53.65\00:00:55.28 In fact, one of the joints 00:00:55.32\00:00:56.99 that happens with the most is the big toe. 00:00:57.02\00:00:59.79 So when anyone comes with a swollen big toe, 00:00:59.82\00:01:03.63 you always say, "Well, could they have gout?" 00:01:03.66\00:01:05.96 And the way we make this diagnosis, 00:01:05.99\00:01:07.80 it's sort of an arthritis, inflammation, 00:01:07.83\00:01:10.07 inflammation of a joint is called arthritis. 00:01:10.10\00:01:13.27 And different things can cause the inflammation, 00:01:13.30\00:01:15.54 sometimes the inflammation is caused by uric acid, 00:01:15.57\00:01:17.94 we call that gout, 00:01:17.97\00:01:19.41 sometimes it's caused by just age and wearing out, 00:01:19.44\00:01:22.24 we call that osteoarthritis. 00:01:22.28\00:01:24.85 Sometimes the body attacks itself, 00:01:24.88\00:01:26.95 we call that rheumatoid arthritis. 00:01:26.98\00:01:29.45 So there's different types of arthritis 00:01:29.48\00:01:31.89 and we can treat this with medicinal, 00:01:31.92\00:01:34.29 you know, we can use food as a medicine treat. 00:01:34.32\00:01:35.92 So this gentleman came to me 00:01:35.96\00:01:37.46 and he had a lot of problems with gout. 00:01:37.49\00:01:40.16 Well, I told him that cherries could be used to treat gout. 00:01:40.20\00:01:44.77 And we brought some cherries here today, 00:01:44.80\00:01:47.47 and he started eating the cherries. 00:01:47.50\00:01:49.60 And guess what? 00:01:49.64\00:01:50.97 His inflammation of his body decreased. 00:01:51.01\00:01:53.98 And I wanna share with our viewers of how cherries 00:01:54.01\00:01:57.15 is the treatment for inflammation, 00:01:57.18\00:01:59.11 specifically, the inflammation of gout. 00:01:59.15\00:02:01.38 And we brought some cherries here, didn't we? 00:02:01.42\00:02:02.75 That's right, we did it. 00:02:02.78\00:02:04.12 I'm actually gonna go ahead and take one 00:02:04.15\00:02:05.49 and we're gonna cut it up here and just kinda... 00:02:05.52\00:02:06.92 You've gotta tell and taste 00:02:06.96\00:02:08.42 'cause if we've got food, we might as well try it. 00:02:08.46\00:02:09.99 But some people have never even eaten cherries very much. 00:02:10.03\00:02:12.89 So are those hard, are they soft? 00:02:12.93\00:02:15.30 These are whole cherries, and they're, they're not hard. 00:02:15.33\00:02:19.40 They're kind of soft, 00:02:19.43\00:02:20.77 but they have a pit in them and a stem. 00:02:20.80\00:02:22.14 So I'm gonna try not to cut myself here 00:02:22.17\00:02:24.07 and we're gonna cut one open and see. 00:02:24.11\00:02:25.91 Okay. 00:02:25.94\00:02:27.78 So I gave this gentleman cherries to help with, 00:02:27.81\00:02:30.91 you know, his inflammation of his gout, 00:02:30.95\00:02:32.28 'cause he had gout a lot. 00:02:32.31\00:02:33.65 Uric acid, he measured in his blood, 00:02:33.68\00:02:36.28 sometimes we used to actually check crystals, 00:02:36.32\00:02:39.35 we used to put a needle in it 00:02:39.39\00:02:40.72 and get the crystals out to prove 00:02:40.76\00:02:42.09 what kind of arthritis it was. 00:02:42.12\00:02:43.99 But we started eating cherries and guess what his gout... 00:02:44.03\00:02:48.06 Are you gonna try that or you want me to try that? 00:02:48.10\00:02:49.60 Oh, you try that, Marcum. 00:02:49.63\00:02:50.97 So the cherries... 00:02:51.00\00:02:52.40 You better be careful, 00:02:52.43\00:02:53.77 don't stain your jacket, please. 00:02:53.80\00:02:55.14 No, I won't. 00:02:55.17\00:02:56.50 Very juicy. I like that. 00:02:57.91\00:02:59.24 You can eat them on their own, they're nice and sweet. 00:02:59.27\00:03:01.74 And about a cup is probably a decent serving I would guess. 00:03:01.78\00:03:05.28 This is about a cup of cherries. 00:03:05.31\00:03:06.75 And... 00:03:06.78\00:03:08.12 I guess you eat them raw. 00:03:08.15\00:03:09.48 You wash them off and eat them raw. 00:03:09.52\00:03:10.85 Yeah. Okay. 00:03:10.89\00:03:12.22 They're probably better for you 00:03:12.25\00:03:13.59 just like this rather than having them in a pie. 00:03:13.62\00:03:14.96 'Cause what happens when we take these foods 00:03:14.99\00:03:16.62 and we put them in with ice cream, or pies... 00:03:16.66\00:03:18.83 Sometimes we get the bad things from the other foods 00:03:18.86\00:03:21.13 and, you know, it negates as much of the good stuff 00:03:21.16\00:03:23.03 from the cherries. 00:03:23.06\00:03:24.40 But anyway, these ideas as cherry is treating gout 00:03:24.43\00:03:27.87 and inflammation has been around for a long time. 00:03:27.90\00:03:31.27 In fact, in the '50s, there was a Cleveland Clinic article 00:03:31.31\00:03:35.08 that suggested cherry as a treatment for gout. 00:03:35.11\00:03:37.95 But back in around 2006, 00:03:37.98\00:03:40.42 in the Journal of the Nutrition, 00:03:40.45\00:03:43.22 Dr Kelly showed the studies where people ate cherries, 00:03:43.25\00:03:47.49 it helped inflammation, 00:03:47.52\00:03:49.22 decreased the inflammation that comes with gout. 00:03:49.26\00:03:53.29 But, you know, you want to get at the cause of gout as well, 00:03:53.33\00:03:56.00 remember, uric acid. 00:03:56.03\00:03:57.73 Sometimes people just get it 00:03:57.77\00:03:59.43 because their metabolism is poor. 00:03:59.47\00:04:01.34 But a lot of people eat uric acid in their foods. 00:04:01.37\00:04:04.71 We know that foods that have animals in them 00:04:04.74\00:04:07.41 have a lot more uric acid in them than plants. 00:04:07.44\00:04:11.01 So we... People eat more plants that have lots of gout 00:04:11.05\00:04:13.92 that helps prevent it. 00:04:13.95\00:04:15.28 Now the medicines that sometimes used to that 00:04:15.32\00:04:17.49 is we have one called, Allopurinol. 00:04:17.52\00:04:19.92 And that's really used to help the production of uric acid, 00:04:19.95\00:04:23.26 and then when a person gets it, 00:04:23.29\00:04:24.79 they get on lots of anti-inflammatory, 00:04:24.83\00:04:27.26 'cause it's very painful when your foot is all swollen. 00:04:27.30\00:04:29.93 So they've traditionally taken one called Indocin, 00:04:29.96\00:04:33.17 other anti-inflammatories, 00:04:33.20\00:04:34.77 but now this study shows that maybe instead of taking 00:04:34.80\00:04:37.34 the anti-inflammatory medicines, 00:04:37.37\00:04:39.11 we can take cherries as a treatment 00:04:39.14\00:04:41.81 for chronic disease. 00:04:41.84\00:04:43.24 So as we talk this series of programs, 00:04:43.28\00:04:46.01 we're gonna talk about different foods 00:04:46.05\00:04:48.12 and how it can help different conditions, 00:04:48.15\00:04:50.35 and also we're gonna talk about how certain foods, 00:04:50.39\00:04:52.95 bad foods can cause, accelerate things to happen. 00:04:52.99\00:04:57.06 Did you know that, Nick, if you have genetics, 00:04:57.09\00:05:00.20 let's say you're born with, 00:05:00.23\00:05:01.56 you know, your bad genes for instance, 00:05:01.60\00:05:04.00 do we know that bad habits including bad foods 00:05:04.03\00:05:07.90 put stress on our bodies? 00:05:07.94\00:05:10.07 And when the stress happens to the body, 00:05:10.11\00:05:12.37 the part of our DNA called the telomere starts to change, 00:05:12.41\00:05:15.58 it gets smaller, 00:05:15.61\00:05:16.95 then we have mutations in our genetics, 00:05:16.98\00:05:19.18 and disease is activated at a much earlier age. 00:05:19.21\00:05:22.55 So let's say you're destined to have abnormalities 00:05:22.58\00:05:26.12 in a metabolism at certain age. 00:05:26.15\00:05:28.56 Well, if you eat certain foods that put stress on that system, 00:05:28.59\00:05:31.69 that might happen at an earlier age 00:05:31.73\00:05:34.16 than if you didn't do things 00:05:34.20\00:05:35.63 that we're putting stress on the body. 00:05:35.66\00:05:37.60 So everything that we put in our bodies, in our minds, 00:05:37.63\00:05:40.64 is either gonna make us better or worse. 00:05:40.67\00:05:43.04 And what I define as stress is anything 00:05:43.07\00:05:45.87 that goes against God's original plan, 00:05:45.91\00:05:48.14 sort of puts stress on us. 00:05:48.18\00:05:49.98 And we saw in our opening about, 00:05:50.01\00:05:52.91 we talked about Genesis 00:05:52.95\00:05:54.35 and how our original plan was 00:05:54.38\00:05:56.18 to eat lots of things that grow. 00:05:56.22\00:05:58.35 Well, when we put things that don't grow in us, 00:05:58.39\00:06:01.02 it could put stress on it and activate bad things, 00:06:01.06\00:06:04.06 including bad genetics 00:06:04.09\00:06:05.53 that we might have inherited from our mom and dad. 00:06:05.56\00:06:08.10 No, not everything, you know, some things are purely genetic 00:06:08.13\00:06:11.83 but usually it's things that stresses, 00:06:11.87\00:06:14.67 turn on our genetics, 00:06:14.70\00:06:16.04 and there's a rapidly growing field 00:06:16.07\00:06:17.91 called epigenetics. 00:06:17.94\00:06:19.74 What activates your genes? What turns them on and off? 00:06:19.77\00:06:22.81 Why do these things happen? 00:06:22.84\00:06:24.45 A very fascinating thing that we're gonna talk about, 00:06:24.48\00:06:27.25 and food seems to play a role 00:06:27.28\00:06:29.35 in how our genes are turned on and off. 00:06:29.38\00:06:31.92 And it seems like food seems to help our good genes do better. 00:06:31.95\00:06:35.26 Yeah. 00:06:35.29\00:06:36.62 You know, there's a lot of great information right there. 00:06:36.66\00:06:38.03 Let me kind of see if I can recapture 00:06:38.06\00:06:40.50 a couple of key points that you mentioned. 00:06:40.53\00:06:42.20 One of them was that uric acid is the key contributor 00:06:42.23\00:06:44.80 for causing gout, is that right? 00:06:44.83\00:06:46.17 Yes, that's correct. 00:06:46.20\00:06:47.54 And eating a heavy meat diet contributes to more uric acid? 00:06:47.57\00:06:51.17 Yes, it does.
