00:00:44.71\00:00:48.48 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:00:48.51\00:00:51.35 Well, you're about to be given the Ultimate Prescription. 00:00:51.38\00:00:54.85 Hello, and thank you for joining us today 00:00:58.12\00:00:59.79 on the Ultimate Prescription. 00:00:59.82\00:01:01.16 A program dedicated to helping us better understand 00:01:01.19\00:01:03.89 and follow God's plan for our lives. 00:01:03.93\00:01:06.36 My name is Nick Evenson, your host, 00:01:06.39\00:01:07.73 and I'm here with Dr. James Marcum. 00:01:07.76\00:01:09.30 And on today's program, we're gonna be discussing 00:01:09.33\00:01:11.20 food as medicine. 00:01:11.23\00:01:13.03 Dr. Marcum, thank you for joining us here today. 00:01:13.07\00:01:14.87 Well, thanks for hosting me, Nick, 00:01:14.90\00:01:16.67 it's always nice to be here with you 00:01:16.71\00:01:18.54 to discuss really an important topic. 00:01:18.57\00:01:21.88 And this is one that is sort of a trendsetter, 00:01:21.91\00:01:25.05 you know, 'cause not a lot of people 00:01:25.08\00:01:26.88 talk about how our nutrition, 00:01:26.92\00:01:28.95 the food we eat can use to treat disease 00:01:28.98\00:01:32.69 as well as prevent disease. 00:01:32.72\00:01:35.09 We're gonna show the signs 00:01:35.12\00:01:36.56 over the next several weeks in programs 00:01:36.59\00:01:39.26 of how the studies have shown that certain foods we eat 00:01:39.29\00:01:42.73 have the chemicals in it 00:01:42.76\00:01:44.33 that can treat certain conditions 00:01:44.37\00:01:46.17 and also prevent certain conditions. 00:01:46.20\00:01:48.37 This gonna be very fascinating subject. 00:01:48.40\00:01:50.71 Now, as a practicing cardiology, 00:01:50.74\00:01:52.64 cardiologist, you do medicine every day, 00:01:52.67\00:01:55.28 you see patients regularly. 00:01:55.31\00:01:56.95 I'm sure you write a lot of prescriptions, right? 00:01:56.98\00:01:59.48 Well, you know, I do 00:01:59.51\00:02:01.28 but it's not the type that you might see. 00:02:01.32\00:02:03.49 Okay. 00:02:03.52\00:02:04.85 Many of the conditions I can give a prescription 00:02:04.89\00:02:06.69 like for a grain or to exercise or certain foods 00:02:06.72\00:02:10.99 and accomplish some of the same things 00:02:11.03\00:02:12.99 that people will do it 00:02:13.03\00:02:14.60 as prescription medications or other treatments. 00:02:14.63\00:02:17.20 And that's what we're gonna show. 00:02:17.23\00:02:18.57 We're gonna show people the steps 00:02:18.60\00:02:20.04 that they can do one step at a time, 00:02:20.07\00:02:22.14 the science behind it 00:02:22.17\00:02:23.74 and how to apply it to your life 00:02:23.77\00:02:25.21 and also get your, how to get your doctor 00:02:25.24\00:02:27.51 to buy into this. 00:02:27.54\00:02:28.88 So it's gonna be a very fascinating study 00:02:28.91\00:02:31.48 that we do. 00:02:31.51\00:02:32.85 Yeah, let's jump into that little bit further. 00:02:32.88\00:02:34.22 What is the time and the place for using, 00:02:34.25\00:02:37.42 you know, cherries, greens, different things like this, 00:02:37.45\00:02:40.46 rather eating food, 00:02:40.49\00:02:41.82 rather than maybe modern medicines offering... 00:02:41.86\00:02:44.59 Well, that's a... that's a great question, Nick, 00:02:44.63\00:02:47.16 because modern medicine treat symptoms and not causes, 00:02:47.20\00:02:51.60 so I divided up into something 00:02:51.63\00:02:53.37 that's an emergency versus a chronic condition. 00:02:53.40\00:02:56.77 Even when we bypass a patient, bypass around them, 00:02:56.81\00:03:00.01 we don't take away the blockages, 00:03:00.04\00:03:01.98 so I might use the bypass to help 00:03:02.01\00:03:04.28 the symptoms of chest pain, 00:03:04.31\00:03:06.05 and then when they come back I say, 00:03:06.08\00:03:07.52 "Well, let's learn what caused that to happen." 00:03:07.55\00:03:10.12 That's one of the chemistry that caused you 00:03:10.15\00:03:12.02 to need modern medicine. 00:03:12.05\00:03:13.76 So modern medicine is great for acute problems, 00:03:13.79\00:03:16.73 heart attacks, acute stroke, 00:03:16.76\00:03:18.89 bleeding to death, needing an antibiotic, 00:03:18.93\00:03:21.96 those are great places for modern medicine. 00:03:22.00\00:03:24.37 If I'm having a surgery, I want anesthesia, don't you? 00:03:24.40\00:03:27.04 Yeah. 00:03:27.07\00:03:28.40 Yeah, put you to sleep you know. 00:03:28.44\00:03:29.77 So there's a place for modern medicine, 00:03:29.80\00:03:31.44 but unfortunately it doesn't treat 00:03:31.47\00:03:33.44 what many people have today and that's chronic disease. 00:03:33.48\00:03:36.24 Do you know what a chronic disease is? 00:03:36.28\00:03:37.88 Chronic, to me it sounds like something that's just ongoing. 00:03:37.91\00:03:40.22 Yes, it's been around a long time 00:03:40.25\00:03:41.75 and the chronic diseases 00:03:41.78\00:03:43.12 that we talk of the most are acquired diseases 00:03:43.15\00:03:45.59 like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, 00:03:45.62\00:03:48.96 cancer could be considered an acquired disease, 00:03:48.99\00:03:51.46 obesity, joint pains, inflammation, 00:03:51.49\00:03:54.93 depression, anxiety, 00:03:54.96\00:03:57.07 many of these diseases are chronic. 00:03:57.10\00:03:58.73 They've been going on for long periods of time. 00:03:58.77\00:04:01.20 Now modern medicine still treats these 00:04:01.24\00:04:03.24 with medications 00:04:03.27\00:04:04.61 but often time we don't get at the cause. 00:04:04.64\00:04:07.51 So now there's a new trend of let's find other ways 00:04:07.54\00:04:10.35 that are safer, that are cheaper, 00:04:10.38\00:04:12.45 that are more effective, 00:04:12.48\00:04:13.82 that not only treat the symptoms 00:04:13.85\00:04:15.45 but perhaps treat the cause of disease. 00:04:15.48\00:04:17.62 Does this make sense? 00:04:17.65\00:04:18.99 Yeah, yeah, so if it's a chronic situation, 00:04:19.02\00:04:23.16 there's probably some preventive measures we can take 00:04:23.19\00:04:25.59 to keep it from getting worse, 00:04:25.63\00:04:27.16 but if you have an acute problem, 00:04:27.20\00:04:29.26 you need to go to your doctor immediately 00:04:29.30\00:04:30.93 and they're gonna probably use some modern medicine. 00:04:30.97\00:04:32.50 That's exactly right, 00:04:32.53\00:04:33.87 and that's the approach that I take in my office. 00:04:33.90\00:04:36.30 You know, if someone's having a funny heart rhythm, 00:04:36.34\00:04:38.91 I try to get the rhythm taken care of first 00:04:38.94\00:04:41.34 and then see if we can address the cause. 00:04:41.38\00:04:44.35 If someone's having chest pain when they walk, 00:04:44.38\00:04:46.82 I'll try to get that chest pain to go away first, 00:04:46.85\00:04:49.45 then we deal with the cause. 00:04:49.48\00:04:51.12 If someone has arthritis, 00:04:51.15\00:04:52.52 we try to get the pain to go away with, 00:04:52.55\00:04:54.26 and then we try to treat the cause. 00:04:54.29\00:04:56.32 Same with all these bowel functions, 00:04:56.36\00:04:58.19 depression, anxiety, all of these chronic, 00:04:58.23\00:05:01.26 if someone has cancer, we try to slow down the cancer, 00:05:01.30\00:05:04.70 and then see if we can get at the cause of the cancer. 00:05:04.73\00:05:07.84 Sometimes just cutting it out, 00:05:07.87\00:05:09.20 sometimes just changing the metabolism of the body. 00:05:09.24\00:05:11.94 These thoughts have been going on 00:05:11.97\00:05:13.44 for quite a long period of time. 00:05:13.48\00:05:15.11 Yeah, so the idea of using food as medicine, 00:05:15.14\00:05:17.71 is it something new or has it been around a while? 00:05:17.75\00:05:20.15 No, it's been around. 00:05:20.18\00:05:21.52 Let's talk about that 00:05:21.55\00:05:22.88 and I wanted to open the scriptures 00:05:22.92\00:05:25.22 because when I started to, you know, 00:05:25.25\00:05:27.32 I went to medical school and I've been practicing, Nick, 00:05:27.36\00:05:29.72 for 25 years now. 00:05:29.76\00:05:31.93 And the more I learn the less I know, 00:05:31.96\00:05:35.66 does that make sense? 00:05:35.70\00:05:37.03 Yeah, sure. 00:05:37.07\00:05:38.40 The body is a lot more complicated 00:05:38.43\00:05:40.24 than that we can even understand. 00:05:40.27\00:05:42.84 We're just learning things 00:05:42.87\00:05:44.21 about how the brain affects our metabolism, 00:05:44.24\00:05:46.57 how our thoughts, 00:05:46.61\00:05:47.94 health thoughts that are in our brains 00:05:47.98\00:05:49.48 that we don't even know they're there, 00:05:49.51\00:05:51.21 that come to our consciousness. 00:05:51.25\00:05:52.78 How our bowels with a trillion bacteria 00:05:52.81\00:05:55.72 get turned on. 00:05:55.75\00:05:57.09 The DNA is exposed 00:05:57.12\00:05:58.95 and does different things in different situations. 00:05:58.99\00:06:01.62 So we're learning a lot but these aren't new concepts, 00:06:01.66\00:06:05.06 God has given us ideas in the Scriptures, 00:06:05.09\00:06:08.06 biblical prescriptions that change our lives, 00:06:08.10\00:06:11.07 so what I've been doing is going back to the Scriptures 00:06:11.10\00:06:14.30 seeing what God has taught, 00:06:14.34\00:06:16.40 then finding the science behind it 00:06:16.44\00:06:18.91 and teaching people how to make changes 00:06:18.94\00:06:21.14 in their lives one step at a time. 00:06:21.18\00:06:23.28 And when I say this has been going on for a while, 00:06:23.31\00:06:25.25 I want to take people back to Genesis, Genesis 1, 00:06:25.28\00:06:28.88 you know what's in Genesis 1? 00:06:28.92\00:06:30.32 Creation. Yup, the creation. 00:06:30.35\00:06:32.05 So let's go back to the very beginning 00:06:32.09\00:06:33.92 and see what God says in Genesis 1:29, 00:06:33.96\00:06:38.43 it says, and God says, 00:06:38.46\00:06:40.40 that's pretty powerful and God says, 00:06:40.43\00:06:42.90 you know, I'm gonna listen if God says it, right? 00:06:42.93\00:06:45.73 He says, "See I have given you every herb that yields seed 00:06:45.77\00:06:49.84 which is on the face of the earth 00:06:49.87\00:06:51.41 and every tree whose fruit yield seed 00:06:51.44\00:06:53.71 to you it shall be your food." 00:06:53.74\00:06:55.91 So God sort of lining in those things 00:06:55.94\00:06:57.61 that grow things, that come from seeds, 00:06:57.65\00:06:59.71 that's what we should eat and He also says, 00:06:59.75\00:07:01.65 "And also that the beast of the earth, 00:07:01.68\00:07:03.79 to every bird of the air and to everything 00:07:03.82\00:07:06.15 that creeps on the earth to which there is life 00:07:06.19\00:07:08.69 I've given green herb for food." 00:07:08.72\00:07:10.49 So basically God's saying, He wants us to eat things 00:07:10.53\00:07:14.20 that grow, things that come from seeds. 00:07:14.23\00:07:16.63 That's right. 00:07:16.67\00:07:18.00 So that, that's the really sort of the basis 00:07:18.03\00:07:19.93 of God's original plan back at creation. 00:07:19.97\00:07:23.04 So that's a template that we can use, 00:07:23.07\00:07:25.57 not only just helps keep our body running smooth, 00:07:25.61\00:07:28.18 but we're gonna find out 00:07:28.21\00:07:29.74 through the next series of programs 00:07:29.78\00:07:31.35 that these substances also have chemicals 00:07:31.38\00:07:34.25 just like a pill might have a chemical 00:07:34.28\00:07:36.45 that changes our bodies. 00:07:36.48\00:07:38.15 And what I found out about a biblical prescription, Nick, 00:07:38.19\00:07:42.12 is biblical prescriptions help every cell, 00:07:42.16\00:07:45.09 they usually don't... they don't have side effects, 00:07:45.13\00:07:47.46 they're usually not expensive, 00:07:47.50\00:07:49.03 they're usually available to everyone. 00:07:49.06\00:07:50.93 Now it might be different people 00:07:50.97\00:07:53.03 have different access to different foods, 00:07:53.07\00:07:54.97 but God makes these available to His people. 00:07:55.00\00:07:57.11 Right. 00:07:57.14\00:07:58.47 And we study the first nutrition study. 00:07:58.51\00:08:00.74 Do you know where the first nutrition study 00:08:00.78\00:08:02.31 was done at? 00:08:02.34\00:08:03.68 I did in the Book of Daniel, right? 00:08:03.71\00:08:05.05 Yeah. 00:08:05.08\00:08:06.41 I... We've talked about that. Yeah, we've talked about that. 00:08:06.45\00:08:07.78 But remember the story, what happened in that story? 00:08:07.82\00:08:11.92 So, Daniel and his friends were, 00:08:11.95\00:08:13.89 they were ordered to eat the king's feast, 00:08:13.92\00:08:15.69 but they hadn't been raised that way, 00:08:15.72\00:08:18.09 that's not how they were taught, 00:08:18.13\00:08:19.46 and they wanted to eat something different. 00:08:19.49\00:08:20.83 That's exactly right. 00:08:20.86\00:08:22.20 And it must have been pretty powerful 00:08:22.23\00:08:23.57 because these were young, young guys, 00:08:23.60\00:08:25.90 and they moved away from home 00:08:25.93\00:08:28.07 and yet when they moved away from home, 00:08:28.10\00:08:30.01 they were so ingrained, 00:08:30.04\00:08:31.37 this was so powerful in their life. 00:08:31.41\00:08:33.34 You know, their parents must have taught them 00:08:33.38\00:08:35.44 about what they should eat, 00:08:35.48\00:08:37.05 because when they went to the foreign land, 00:08:37.08\00:08:38.95 what did they say, 00:08:38.98\00:08:40.32 "No I don't, I don't want to eat the king's food." 00:08:40.35\00:08:42.68 And in the Hebrew the word is zero'iym 00:08:42.72\00:08:44.95 and that means that which is grown. 00:08:44.99\00:08:47.02 So again we see things that come from seeds, 00:08:47.06\00:08:49.06 things that grow, that's the best food for us. 00:08:49.09\00:08:51.39 Not things that have mothers? No, that's right. 00:08:51.43\00:08:53.50 And after a short period of time, 00:08:53.53\00:08:55.63 after short period of time it says, their countenance, 00:08:55.66\00:08:58.20 the way they look was better. 00:08:58.23\00:08:59.73 So it just shows, you know, after a few days, you know, 00:08:59.77\00:09:02.30 a few days their countenance was even better, 00:09:02.34\00:09:04.51 so every cell in their body improve 00:09:04.54\00:09:06.54 because it was obvious. 00:09:06.57\00:09:07.91 Now they didn't... 00:09:07.94\00:09:09.28 I'm sure back then they didn't have blood work 00:09:09.31\00:09:11.18 to check their blood sugar, 00:09:11.21\00:09:12.55 detector inflammation to check their blood pressure, 00:09:12.58\00:09:15.82 to look at some of the biometrics 00:09:15.85\00:09:17.55 that we look at, 00:09:17.59\00:09:19.02 but you know what, it didn't matter, 00:09:19.05\00:09:21.16 they could just see it in them, you know, that glow is better, 00:09:21.19\00:09:24.19 you know, how it is when you see someone healthy, 00:09:24.23\00:09:25.83 you say, "Man, you look healthy," 00:09:25.86\00:09:28.13 and likewise when someone looks sick, 00:09:28.16\00:09:29.90 you can just tell. 00:09:29.93\00:09:31.33 Well, after a short period of time 00:09:31.37\00:09:32.90 when they ate just things from seeds, 00:09:32.93\00:09:35.27 they were ten times smarter. 00:09:35.30\00:09:36.84 And after a period of time 00:09:36.87\00:09:38.64 when they finished the king's program, 00:09:38.67\00:09:40.41 they said they were ten times smarter, 00:09:40.44\00:09:42.94 ten times smarter. 00:09:42.98\00:09:44.31 So just think about it, 00:09:44.35\00:09:45.68 if the wise men were walking around 00:09:45.71\00:09:47.58 with IQs of 120-130 00:09:47.62\00:09:49.88 and Daniel and his friends were ten times smarter, 00:09:49.92\00:09:52.55 they were walking around with IQs of 1200? 00:09:52.59\00:09:55.62 It's significant. 00:09:55.66\00:09:56.99 Yeah, and no wonder the king was smart enough 00:09:57.03\00:09:59.69 to put them in charge of things 00:09:59.73\00:10:01.43 because they're smarter than everyone else, 00:10:01.46\00:10:03.30 but remember, I think it wasn't about the food 00:10:03.33\00:10:07.04 but also about the worship 00:10:07.07\00:10:09.20 because they worshipped the true God, 00:10:09.24\00:10:11.14 they stayed true to His principles 00:10:11.17\00:10:12.94 no matter what. 00:10:12.97\00:10:14.34 So here we see the physical and the spiritual 00:10:14.38\00:10:18.25 working together to improve our health 00:10:18.28\00:10:21.48 in a scientific study. 00:10:21.52\00:10:22.85 So you're saying it's not just the behavior of eating 00:10:22.88\00:10:25.05 what they were taught, but the reason they did it 00:10:25.09\00:10:27.42 was because they were following God's plan. 00:10:27.46\00:10:29.22 Exactly, the worship, they put God's plan, 00:10:29.26\00:10:31.93 they knew that God's plan was the best. 00:10:31.96\00:10:33.90 God taught them how to apply that to life 00:10:33.93\00:10:36.03 and they weren't afraid to do that, 00:10:36.06\00:10:37.63 they weren't afraid to worship 00:10:37.67\00:10:39.30 because they saw the bigger benefits 00:10:39.33\00:10:41.40 in brain health and also physical health. 00:10:41.44\00:10:44.31 So as we talk about food and medicine, 00:10:44.34\00:10:46.61 this goes way, way back. 00:10:46.64\00:10:48.64 Now, one of the earliest doctors 00:10:48.68\00:10:51.71 and I want to throw a quiz at you, okay, 00:10:51.75\00:10:53.52 see if you can get this right. 00:10:53.55\00:10:54.88 All right. 00:10:54.92\00:10:56.25 Who was a Greek physician 00:10:56.28\00:10:58.95 that was considered the father of medicine? 00:10:58.99\00:11:03.26 Who is that? 00:11:03.29\00:11:04.63 So, if you go back, 00:11:04.66\00:11:05.99 I actually read about this recently. 00:11:06.03\00:11:07.36 Oh, yeah, yeah. 00:11:07.40\00:11:08.73 We're talking about Hippocrates, right? 00:11:08.76\00:11:10.10 Yes. 00:11:10.13\00:11:11.47 And this was 400 years 00:11:11.50\00:11:12.83 before Christ came to earth, is that right? 00:11:12.87\00:11:14.20 That's correct. 00:11:14.24\00:11:15.57 That's remarkable to me like, you know, 00:11:15.60\00:11:17.41 'cause I read about Hippocrates a little bit, 00:11:17.44\00:11:19.04 but I didn't realize that was actually 00:11:19.07\00:11:21.11 before Jesus walked the earth. 00:11:21.14\00:11:22.68 You're doing very good, Nick, 00:11:22.71\00:11:24.21 and now for the bonus question, the bonus question. 00:11:24.25\00:11:25.58 Oh, yeah. 00:11:25.61\00:11:27.52 Hippocrates made a famous statement 00:11:27.55\00:11:30.32 that has lasted now 400 before Christ 00:11:30.35\00:11:33.76 and now you know the year we're in now, 00:11:33.79\00:11:35.36 so this has been going on for years and years and years. 00:11:35.39\00:11:37.39 Right. 00:11:37.43\00:11:38.76 What is that statement that he made back then 00:11:38.79\00:11:41.83 that still applies today? 00:11:41.86\00:11:44.03 Something about food be thy medicine 00:11:44.07\00:11:46.50 and medicine be thy food. 00:11:46.53\00:11:47.87 Yes, so even back then 00:11:47.90\00:11:50.11 he understood the importance of nutrition 00:11:50.14\00:11:53.68 in treating the body and preventing disease. 00:11:53.71\00:11:56.41 In fact, you know, there's been stories told 00:11:56.44\00:11:58.75 that you know as part of the treatment for patients, 00:11:58.78\00:12:01.32 he actually grew crops. 00:12:01.35\00:12:03.39 Yeah. Now here's the bonus question. 00:12:03.42\00:12:04.95 Do you know what types of crops he was growing 00:12:04.99\00:12:07.72 as using food as medicine? 00:12:07.76\00:12:09.22 You got me there, I don't. 00:12:09.26\00:12:10.59 Well, I can't remember, it wasn't alfalfa 00:12:10.63\00:12:13.19 but it was something that he actually grew 00:12:13.23\00:12:15.06 in the fields, 00:12:15.10\00:12:16.43 some plant that he used as medicine, 00:12:16.46\00:12:17.87 but he also saw the importance of water too, you know, 00:12:17.90\00:12:21.57 as something more important than wine, 00:12:21.60\00:12:23.20 you know, wine was big back then. 00:12:23.24\00:12:24.57 Right. 00:12:24.61\00:12:25.94 You know, but he saw the importance of water. 00:12:25.97\00:12:27.31 So this thought of food as medicine 00:12:27.34\00:12:29.11 and medicine as food, 00:12:29.14\00:12:30.48 it's been around for a long time 00:12:30.51\00:12:32.68 but we sort of lost track of that. 00:12:32.71\00:12:34.85 You know, we started as societies 00:12:34.88\00:12:36.65 we wanted the easy way, 00:12:36.69\00:12:38.22 so with that came processed food, 00:12:38.25\00:12:40.36 putting chemicals in food, 00:12:40.39\00:12:42.12 you know, eating food that, 00:12:42.16\00:12:43.96 you know, wasn't really good for us, 00:12:43.99\00:12:45.99 and now over the last 100 years or so, 00:12:46.03\00:12:48.33 we're understanding that these types of food 00:12:48.36\00:12:51.07 causes to have chronic disease. 00:12:51.10\00:12:54.44 So it only makes sense 00:12:54.47\00:12:55.80 if we want to get rid of the symptoms, 00:12:55.84\00:12:57.44 let's try to get at the cause. 00:12:57.47\00:12:59.41 So we have to think of food 00:12:59.44\00:13:01.01 as not only ways to prevent chronic disease, 00:13:01.04\00:13:03.55 but also to treat it 00:13:03.58\00:13:05.01 because there's chemicals in these foods, 00:13:05.05\00:13:06.82 and we're gonna talk about these 00:13:06.85\00:13:08.22 over the next period of time of how this can make us better, 00:13:08.25\00:13:11.95 and how we can apply it to our lives. 00:13:11.99\00:13:13.76 Now I want to clarify one thing. 00:13:13.79\00:13:15.12 Yeah, sure. 00:13:15.16\00:13:16.49 Some people may be sitting at home, 00:13:16.52\00:13:17.86 listening to this and think, oh, that sounds great, 00:13:17.89\00:13:19.23 I'm gonna get rid of all my prescription medications... 00:13:19.26\00:13:20.83 Oh, no, no. Is that what we're saying? 00:13:20.86\00:13:22.66 Or can you expect to completely remove 00:13:22.70\00:13:24.43 prescription medication? 00:13:24.47\00:13:25.80 Well, there is a place for modern medicine. 00:13:25.83\00:13:27.17 And some people have genetic concerns 00:13:27.20\00:13:29.34 that no matter what they do, no matter what they eat, 00:13:29.37\00:13:31.84 they still have problems. 00:13:31.87\00:13:33.41 And, you know, good nutrition is gonna help 00:13:33.44\00:13:35.91 those genetic problems, not accelerate. 00:13:35.94\00:13:38.65 But I had a guy that came into the office 00:13:38.68\00:13:40.48 not too long ago, 00:13:40.52\00:13:41.85 that had suffered a heart attack at age 57 00:13:41.88\00:13:43.92 he did everything right. 00:13:43.95\00:13:45.55 I asked him how old was his dad, 00:13:45.59\00:13:47.16 his dad was 42. 00:13:47.19\00:13:48.86 So it seems like these chronic things 00:13:48.89\00:13:51.49 turn on our genetics, 00:13:51.53\00:13:52.99 and as we go on we're gonna talk about 00:13:53.03\00:13:54.76 how food affects our telomeres, and helps us, you know, 00:13:54.80\00:13:58.20 prevent mutations and also bad foods 00:13:58.23\00:14:00.77 and bad habits can cause these things 00:14:00.80\00:14:02.64 which accelerate aging and our body getting old. 00:14:02.67\00:14:05.67 Well, that was pretty great introduction 00:14:05.71\00:14:07.08 to the topic of food as medicine, 00:14:07.11\00:14:08.44 but we've got to take a break and stay with us 00:14:08.48\00:14:10.21 because we're gonna talk about 00:14:10.25\00:14:11.58 the healing properties of cherries, 00:14:11.61\00:14:12.95 when we return. 00:14:12.98\00:14:14.32
