Welcome back you are watching the "Ultimate Prescription". 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 I am Nick Evanson here with Dr. Marcum 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.43 and today we are answering some of the most frequently 00:00:04.47\00:00:06.40 asked questions that we receive on our website at: 00:00:06.43\00:00:08.67 heartwisemininsties.org. 00:00:08.70\00:00:10.81 Dr. Marcum we've started through our list of questions 00:00:10.84\00:00:13.94 but we got plenty more, so I am going to 00:00:13.98\00:00:15.31 jump right into it here. 00:00:15.34\00:00:16.68 Yeah and all of these have to do with pain...That's right! 00:00:16.71\00:00:18.61 We've tried to...Talk about pain in the series. 00:00:18.65\00:00:20.38 We didn't catch them with some of the other programs that were 00:00:20.42\00:00:22.75 catching up here. That's right! 00:00:22.78\00:00:24.22 So the first question coming back is "What are some natural 00:00:24.25\00:00:28.06 treatments for pain?" Ok. And I only get one... 00:00:28.09\00:00:30.59 Ok. Because I have been listening and learning 00:00:30.63\00:00:32.49 something here. What's that "Water" 00:00:32.53\00:00:34.00 That's good...When you drink water because our body always 00:00:34.03\00:00:36.16 needs water and it helps reduce inflammation. 00:00:36.20\00:00:39.07 So the first thing is you want to find out natural treatments. 00:00:39.10\00:00:43.67 It's natural to find out what's causing the pain and remove it. 00:00:43.71\00:00:46.47 Okay. So if you are banging your head or out in the sun 00:00:46.51\00:00:49.41 you know, get rid of the trauma if you can. 00:00:49.44\00:00:52.65 Now I am talking about pain that you can't find out what 00:00:52.68\00:00:55.22 it is. Here's a gigantic list of things that can help. 00:00:55.25\00:00:58.72 Now this is for chronic pain, maybe you can't find out... 00:00:58.75\00:01:01.62 You can't get at the underlying cause, maybe Neuropathy type 00:01:01.66\00:01:05.63 pains, things of that nature. 00:01:05.66\00:01:07.30 Increase your circulation, okay, get better blood flow 00:01:07.33\00:01:11.63 to the area to improve the nerve and the whole organ 00:01:11.67\00:01:14.80 function. How do we increase circulation? 00:01:14.84\00:01:16.84 The best way is we can increase it by exercise, 00:01:16.87\00:01:20.11 that's a great way. Eating the right foods. 00:01:20.14\00:01:23.04 We know that greens and beans have things...They have nitrates 00:01:23.08\00:01:27.28 that convert to nitric oxide which makes the blood vessels 00:01:27.32\00:01:30.35 bigger. Try to avoid fats. Fats are in everything now, 00:01:30.39\00:01:35.39 if you can move towards your whole food plant based diet 00:01:35.42\00:01:38.76 that will improve your circulation along with exercise. 00:01:38.79\00:01:42.26 Including natural fats like avacados... 00:01:42.30\00:01:44.37 Yeah, that would be as long as you don't eat to much of those. 00:01:44.40\00:01:46.90 So that would be ok as long as I don't eat too much? 00:01:46.94\00:01:48.44 Right! We don't want it to go about 15% of 00:01:48.47\00:01:50.77 your total calories. Ok. So that's good, that's what 00:01:50.81\00:01:53.84 we can do to help the circulation to the organs 00:01:53.88\00:01:57.35 as well as the nerves. 00:01:57.38\00:01:58.71 Another thing, you mentioned water, hydration, inflammation. 00:01:58.75\00:02:01.32 Light can help, vitamin D might be involved. 00:02:01.35\00:02:05.32 In fact any type of stress that we can turn down 00:02:05.35\00:02:09.59 will help our bodies. So if you are under work stress, 00:02:09.62\00:02:12.89 mental stress, stress from not resting well, 00:02:12.93\00:02:15.63 getting more rest will help. Music helps make endorphins, 00:02:15.66\00:02:20.40 pets help endorphins and oxytocin, which are natural 00:02:20.44\00:02:25.61 pain killers. What's the best medicine? 00:02:25.64\00:02:27.94 That's a big quiz. Laughter. 00:02:27.98\00:02:29.94 Yes! Laughter is the best medicine, it helps chronic pain 00:02:29.98\00:02:33.11 by making endorphins. 00:02:33.15\00:02:34.92 We talked about specific things that our nutrition that 00:02:34.95\00:02:38.45 turns down inflammation. Probiotics might help, 00:02:38.49\00:02:42.46 cause it helps the bowel not have all...make all these 00:02:42.49\00:02:45.63 inflammatory chemicals in the body. Right. 00:02:45.66\00:02:47.43 A natural substance like ginger turns down inflammation. 00:02:47.46\00:02:51.70 Flax, the Omega 3 substance turns down inflammation. 00:02:51.73\00:02:55.50 There has been some studies with root Turmeric, 00:02:55.54\00:02:59.21 okay, that can help with inflammation. 00:02:59.24\00:03:02.24 We know Aloe Vera, we talked about that, Willow Bark, 00:03:02.28\00:03:05.75 we talked about the hydration and then finally Worship. 00:03:05.78\00:03:10.72 Worship also turns down chronic stress. 00:03:10.75\00:03:14.26 Chronic stress helps our brain tolerate pain better. 00:03:14.29\00:03:17.63 These are all different natural things, there's many many more, 00:03:17.66\00:03:20.83 but those are a list of a lot of things that change our 00:03:21.03\00:03:23.60 chemistry and if we start moving... If we have pain 00:03:23.63\00:03:26.60 and start adding these one step at a time, 00:03:26.63\00:03:28.80 then it's not going to get worse, okay. 00:03:28.84\00:03:31.87 And if we move this... On that list, where would I start, 00:03:31.91\00:03:34.88 I would start with "Worship". 00:03:34.94\00:03:36.54 I am going to talk about worship a little bit more here 00:03:36.58\00:03:38.38 because that's an interesting concept that maybe some people 00:03:38.41\00:03:41.08 haven't considered before and people worship in a lot of 00:03:41.12\00:03:44.35 different ways and the way I worship may not be 00:03:44.39\00:03:48.12 stress reducing to somebody. Right! So explain that for us 00:03:48.16\00:03:52.89 a little bit. How does worship reduce stress? 00:03:52.93\00:03:55.96 Matthew 28:11 Come unto me and I will give you rest. 00:03:56.00\00:03:59.73 Okay! Come to me, worship Me and God's going to give you 00:03:59.77\00:04:04.34 this rest. The opposite of stress is rest, 00:04:04.37\00:04:07.01 so God gives us this rest. Um, you know we see people that 00:04:07.04\00:04:12.08 do better that have one day a week of rest, that rest 00:04:12.11\00:04:14.92 at night, it helps our Circadium Rythyms, 00:04:15.65\00:04:17.49 and when we worship God, that might be many way... 00:04:17.52\00:04:20.49 Adam and Eve worshiped just by being with God, 00:04:20.52\00:04:22.72 being out in the garden, serving the animals, 00:04:22.76\00:04:25.63 that's the way they worshiped. I don't know how Noah worshiped 00:04:25.66\00:04:30.37 you know, he was working on the boat during the day 00:04:30.40\00:04:32.37 I'm sure on the weekend he talked to people and tried 00:04:32.40\00:04:35.70 to serve them, that's how he worshiped. 00:04:35.74\00:04:37.24 Remember they didn't have a Bible at that time. Right! 00:04:37.27\00:04:40.01 Now days of course, we can worship through Bible Study 00:04:40.04\00:04:42.78 and prayer. Some people worship out in nature 00:04:42.81\00:04:46.72 seeing God's beautiful creation, He speaks to them there. 00:04:46.75\00:04:49.78 Some people worship through service, some people worship 00:04:49.82\00:04:53.92 of course through thanking God, and praising Him for all the 00:04:53.96\00:04:57.53 good things He has done. Some people worship by taking care 00:04:57.56\00:05:01.30 of His creation, including our body, you know, that could be 00:05:01.33\00:05:04.83 considered a type of worship. So there's many types of 00:05:04.87\00:05:08.00 worship, so when we come unto Him, we worship Him 00:05:08.04\00:05:11.57 and He's promised to give us "rest". 00:05:11.61\00:05:14.78 He changes our chemistry, now we have proof that people 00:05:14.81\00:05:17.68 that do worship turn on the part of the brain that 00:05:17.71\00:05:20.72 turns down stress. We upshift our brain to the higher 00:05:20.75\00:05:23.72 functions, we turn off inflammation, 00:05:23.75\00:05:26.05 we turn off adrenalin, down Cortisol, some of the things 00:05:26.09\00:05:28.89 that damage us chronically it turns down also... 00:05:28.92\00:05:31.79 We've had some studies that rest and relaxation actually 00:05:31.83\00:05:36.30 changes our very DNA, we call this changes our epigenetics. 00:05:36.33\00:05:40.80 So if I had chronic pain, I think the place I would start... 00:05:40.84\00:05:44.54 what I would find out. How do I connect with God 00:05:44.57\00:05:47.61 the best, worship there, and develop that worship. 00:05:47.64\00:05:51.48 One of the best places to start is just opening the Bible, 00:05:51.51\00:05:55.15 reading the Bible, praying, coming unto Him, 00:05:55.18\00:05:58.79 seeing how God did things. You know, meet with Him 00:05:58.82\00:06:01.69 and finding Biblical prescriptions and 00:06:01.72\00:06:04.59 applying them to your life to improve your health. Yea, yea. 00:06:04.63\00:06:07.73 Now that's some great advice. Now let's move on to another 00:06:07.76\00:06:10.37 question, um, "Medications," that's something that you've 00:06:10.40\00:06:13.94 actually written a book called "Medicines That Kill". 00:06:13.97\00:06:15.94 Yea, it's back there, the "Medicines That Kill" book. 00:06:15.97\00:06:18.21 It sounds kind of scary right? Yea! 00:06:18.24\00:06:20.04 Well, it's not that medicine should... It's a good title. 00:06:20.08\00:06:22.28 Yea. It's a place. Modern medicine has it's place 00:06:22.31\00:06:25.65 and it's mainly used to get people over the hump 00:06:25.68\00:06:29.22 till they can get at the cause as long as the risks are worth 00:06:29.25\00:06:32.59 the benefits. In that book I talk about a lot of the risks 00:06:32.62\00:06:35.42 and how to use medicines successfully, and then for 00:06:35.46\00:06:38.09 chronic pain. You know there's some people that have 00:06:38.13\00:06:41.10 chronic pain either to it's severe malignancy, 00:06:41.13\00:06:44.13 severe neuropathies, severe accidents, and the pain... 00:06:44.17\00:06:48.24 the risk of the pain is just enormous and treating that pain 00:06:48.27\00:06:52.11 is definitely worth the risk of the strong medications that are 00:06:52.14\00:06:55.54 out there. Some of the medications that are out there 00:06:55.58\00:06:58.95 are the stronger ones or they are "Narcotics" and we see 00:06:58.98\00:07:02.22 "Vitanil" and "Percocet," and "Oxycodone," 00:07:02.25\00:07:04.75 and some of those. There is a place for that, unfortunately 00:07:04.79\00:07:08.46 people have not paid attention to that Nick and they 00:07:08.49\00:07:11.46 started using it because it does make you sort of 00:07:11.49\00:07:13.86 feel better and euphoric so people are using it for 00:07:13.90\00:07:16.13 off label treatments. Um hum. You know, they might 00:07:16.16\00:07:19.43 just have life that is not to good and they are under stress 00:07:19.47\00:07:22.77 and they want to escape it all, so guess what, 00:07:22.80\00:07:24.84 they reach for this type of stress. Right! Ok! 00:07:24.87\00:07:27.74 The people are heavy laden, okay and stressed, 00:07:27.78\00:07:32.05 and instead of worshipping, they pick up a pill. 00:07:32.08\00:07:35.52 Right! That's not the way to deal with stress. 00:07:35.55\00:07:38.05 As a result they do not have healing... 00:07:38.09\00:07:40.86 they do not have true rest. They might feel better in the 00:07:40.89\00:07:43.73 short term, but in the long term they don't. 00:07:43.76\00:07:45.99 Many people are addicted to pain medicines now, 00:07:46.03\00:07:48.70 but for chronic pain, for people that are truly in 00:07:48.73\00:07:51.63 deep pain, the benefits are definitely there. 00:07:51.67\00:07:54.70 So you would advise people to be very cautious when 00:07:54.74\00:07:56.44 it comes to using strong pain medications. 00:07:56.47\00:07:58.71 Yeah, a long term... to avoid it at addictions, 00:07:58.74\00:08:00.88 and also there are a lot of side effects we avoid. 00:08:00.91\00:08:03.24 But the side effects, it's addiction, it can change the way 00:08:03.28\00:08:07.12 you think, it slows down your respirations, 00:08:07.15\00:08:09.45 it can slow down your bowels. I would try to find out 00:08:09.48\00:08:13.59 the cause first and then treat the cause if you can for pain, 00:08:13.62\00:08:16.62 and then work on natural things to treat pain, and then I would 00:08:16.66\00:08:19.89 save narcotis for the very very last treatment for severe pain. 00:08:19.93\00:08:23.53 Yeah. So aside from the narcotics, what are some of 00:08:23.57\00:08:26.53 the other treatments that are common with pain. 00:08:26.57\00:08:28.07 I think we've talked a little bit about physical therapy, 00:08:28.10\00:08:29.97 what are some other thing else? We talked about 00:08:30.01\00:08:31.67 physical therapy, we talked about all the big chronic 00:08:31.71\00:08:34.11 list that we went through, but there is a class of medicine 00:08:34.14\00:08:36.75 called Non Steroidal Anti- Inflammatories... Umm... 00:08:36.78\00:08:40.62 Motrin, they work by lowering inflammation in the body. 00:08:40.65\00:08:45.19 Okay, they can block prostaglandin and things 00:08:45.22\00:08:47.46 that cause inflammation. Acetaminophen is another 00:08:47.49\00:08:50.59 pain killer that's out there. Sometimes pain is treated by 00:08:50.63\00:08:55.16 muscle relaxants, that relaxes the muscle that might be 00:08:55.20\00:08:58.63 putting pressure on the nerves. Sometimes it's the brain is not 00:08:58.67\00:09:02.64 handling pain very well. People are giving people 00:09:02.67\00:09:06.68 anti-anxiety medicines to help with chronic pain. 00:09:06.71\00:09:09.54 One that is commonly given is called a 00:09:09.58\00:09:11.98 Tricyclic Anti-Depressant. One that has been around 00:09:12.01\00:09:14.82 for years is one called amitriptyline, 00:09:14.85\00:09:17.29 that people sometimes give for chronic pain. 00:09:17.32\00:09:19.95 If it's due to inflammation, sometimes people give steroids 00:09:19.99\00:09:23.32 for a short time. There's creams that can be put on 00:09:23.36\00:09:26.13 the body that have special chemicals that also might 00:09:26.16\00:09:29.36 with pain as well. Sometimes some people...I've seen think 00:09:29.40\00:09:33.13 that pepper, you know is an active ingredient in pepper 00:09:33.17\00:09:35.80 it's one thing that can help with pain. 00:09:35.84\00:09:37.17 Charcoal, we talked about some of those things. Right. 00:09:37.21\00:09:39.27 There's many different way to deal with chronic pain 00:09:39.31\00:09:42.34 and we've mentioned some of those, and you just got to 00:09:42.38\00:09:45.38 get with your provider, but I want to encourage people 00:09:45.41\00:09:47.82 first, let's see if we can find out the cause of pain, 00:09:47.85\00:09:50.65 and if you don't remove the cause of pain, you are sort of 00:09:50.69\00:09:53.82 chasing your tail. Right. The pain never goes away. 00:09:53.86\00:09:56.59 I think I gave this analogy in a previous program, 00:09:56.62\00:09:59.76 if you ar banging your head on the wall, 00:09:59.79\00:10:01.13 the treatment is not going to be Turmeric, 00:10:01.16\00:10:03.93 it's not going to be a non- steroidal, 00:10:03.97\00:10:06.03 it's not going to be physical therapy. 00:10:06.07\00:10:07.74 You got to stop banging your head against the wall. 00:10:07.77\00:10:09.17 Stop banging your head against the wall, and sometimes 00:10:09.20\00:10:11.74 believe it or not, people do those things and it creates 00:10:11.77\00:10:15.08 chronic problems for them. 00:10:15.11\00:10:16.88 Now you mentioned anti- inflammatories... Yep... 00:10:16.91\00:10:19.31 and we discussed that every treatment has a benefit 00:10:19.35\00:10:21.58 and there is also a risk. What are the risks 00:10:21.62\00:10:23.62 when it comes to anti- inflammatories? 00:10:23.65\00:10:25.29 Well anti-inflammatories, they can increase the risk of having 00:10:25.32\00:10:29.82 ulcers in the stomach, they increse the risk of bleeding. 00:10:29.86\00:10:33.50 In fact there are some anti-inflammatories around 00:10:33.53\00:10:36.77 for awhile that were actually pulled off the market 00:10:36.80\00:10:38.93 because they increased the risk of heart attack actually. 00:10:38.97\00:10:41.84 So every medicine... everything we do to our body, every input, 00:10:41.87\00:10:46.88 either has a benefit or a risk, and we have to assess 00:10:46.91\00:10:50.71 whether that risk is worth taking. 00:10:50.75\00:10:52.81 I would imagine that maybe when you get the stronger 00:10:52.85\00:10:55.62 medications like narcotics, are there even stronger risks 00:10:55.65\00:10:58.32 that are associated? We talked about addictions and what not, 00:10:58.35\00:11:00.62 what are some of the other side effects that can come? 00:11:00.66\00:11:03.79 Well, I think that the largest one is they take so much 00:11:03.83\00:11:06.39 that eventually they quit breathing, 00:11:06.43\00:11:08.80 they don't think well, their bowels can shut down, 00:11:08.83\00:11:11.87 their blood pressure can go low, because it affects the 00:11:11.90\00:11:15.50 entire body, you know, because when you are taking 00:11:15.54\00:11:17.81 pain medications, it affects the way the nervous system 00:11:17.84\00:11:20.38 works, it doesn't work quite as well, so it does affect 00:11:20.41\00:11:24.21 everything, and when you take the stronger medicines of course 00:11:24.25\00:11:27.15 have stronger side effects. Yeah. So my advice to people 00:11:27.18\00:11:30.99 that do take narcotics is try to find other medications 00:11:31.02\00:11:34.26 so they don't have to take as much, 00:11:34.29\00:11:35.82 try to find natural remedies that you can do so you don't 00:11:35.86\00:11:38.69 have to take as much. Have more water, more relaxation, 00:11:38.73\00:11:42.80 of course more worship, those things so you don't have to 00:11:42.83\00:11:45.17 take as much. You get by on just as little as you need 00:11:45.20\00:11:48.30 to take the severe pain away. 00:11:48.34\00:11:49.67 We've got time for just one more question. 00:11:49.70\00:11:51.37 Is it possible for someone to be injured 00:11:51.41\00:11:54.38 but not feel pain, and what would cause that? Yes! 00:11:54.41\00:11:57.18 It is possible to be injured and have no pain 00:11:57.21\00:11:59.81 and a couple of thing that I have seen can cause that is 00:11:59.85\00:12:02.68 that the damage to the injured part... we see that in diabetic 00:12:02.72\00:12:05.69 neuropathies, the feet get damaged, infections, 00:12:05.72\00:12:09.76 their nerves can't sense it, and they have damage there. 00:12:09.79\00:12:12.53 In some cases I've seen people that are trying to save... 00:12:12.56\00:12:16.87 or I haven't seen it myself but you hear about stories... 00:12:16.90\00:12:20.07 someone is trying to save someone's life, 00:12:20.10\00:12:21.97 that because they are doing that, they are so focused 00:12:22.00\00:12:24.31 on doing this that the brain somhow turns off the pain, 00:12:24.34\00:12:27.71 and you are able to do amazing things. 00:12:27.74\00:12:29.08 So it is possible to do that in certain situations. 00:12:29.11\00:12:32.71 Right! Well Dr. Marcum, thank you for sharing 00:12:32.75\00:12:34.48 the wealth of information there, 00:12:34.52\00:12:35.85 and if you are watching at home, we want to pray that you 00:12:35.88\00:12:38.95 will feel no pain and that God will restore healing 00:12:38.99\00:12:41.32 in your life and thank you for joining us, 00:12:41.36\00:12:43.53 and we are going to be back in just a second 00:12:43.56\00:12:45.43 as Dr. Marcum prays with us. 00:12:45.46\00:12:46.80 For those suffering from chronic pain, 00:12:54.80\00:12:58.34 I want you to realize that Christ and worship 00:12:58.37\00:13:01.41 is a potential, and the solution to this problem 00:13:01.44\00:13:06.05 at least in the long term, so don't forget your worship 00:13:06.08\00:13:09.92 or relationship with God. Let's all pray together. 00:13:09.95\00:13:12.52 Heavenly Father, I want to pray especially for those who might 00:13:12.55\00:13:16.69 be suffering and in pain, come to them, 00:13:16.73\00:13:19.39 enhance their worship, give them the rest, 00:13:19.43\00:13:22.83 and let them know that you are going to heal them and 00:13:22.86\00:13:25.13 just where, when, and how.
