Welcome back to the program. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 I'm your host Nick Evenson here with Dr. Marcum, 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.07 and on this program we're discussing neuropathies. 00:00:04.10\00:00:06.70 And Dr. Marcum, 00:00:06.74\00:00:08.07 you did a fantastic job of explaining this. 00:00:08.10\00:00:09.44 Well, that's complex and let me ask you as a student 00:00:09.47\00:00:12.67 what did you pick up 00:00:12.71\00:00:14.04 'cause if you don't understand 00:00:14.08\00:00:15.41 that the audience is not going to understand, 00:00:15.44\00:00:17.11 so what did you pick up where we might have to clarify. 00:00:17.15\00:00:20.18 Some of the key points that I picked up is that 00:00:20.22\00:00:21.98 the most common type of neuropathies are the ones 00:00:22.02\00:00:24.75 that happened in the periphery in your hands, arms, 00:00:24.79\00:00:27.32 legs, feet, right? 00:00:27.36\00:00:28.99 And that's when the nerves 00:00:29.02\00:00:30.99 aren't sending the signals correctly maybe... 00:00:31.03\00:00:33.66 The nerves are damaged. 00:00:33.70\00:00:35.03 They're damaged yes, they're damaged. 00:00:35.06\00:00:36.43 And so you may feel pain 00:00:36.46\00:00:37.80 even though there is nothing aside 00:00:37.83\00:00:39.30 from the nerve causing that pain, okay. 00:00:39.33\00:00:41.57 And then if it's, it could be out of the extremity 00:00:41.60\00:00:44.64 or it could be where the nerve connects to the spine. 00:00:44.67\00:00:47.04 Spinal cord. Right. 00:00:47.08\00:00:48.41 Or if it's not there, it could be in the brain 00:00:48.44\00:00:50.85 where the nerve connects in the brain. 00:00:50.88\00:00:52.31 So there are several different places 00:00:52.35\00:00:53.68 that the nerve could have the neuropathy, right? 00:00:53.72\00:00:55.78 And the nerve itself is the problem, 00:00:55.82\00:00:57.95 not what it's reporting on. 00:00:57.99\00:00:59.42 Right. Okay. 00:00:59.45\00:01:00.79 And the brain is involved and it can be very tricky 00:01:00.82\00:01:03.99 because the brain can trick the nerves 00:01:04.03\00:01:05.76 into reporting on things it's not a problem 00:01:05.79\00:01:07.96 or the nerve can be damaged. 00:01:08.00\00:01:09.40 And that I think if we have that under our belt 00:01:09.43\00:01:12.73 that will help us understand neuropathies 00:01:12.77\00:01:15.24 especially peripheral neuropathies 00:01:15.27\00:01:17.57 as we answer these questions. 00:01:17.61\00:01:18.94 Right. 00:01:18.97\00:01:20.31 Yeah, we got some questions that are coming 00:01:20.34\00:01:21.68 from the website 00:01:21.71\00:01:23.04 and we encourage you to visit the website 00:01:23.08\00:01:24.41 heartwiseministries.org. 00:01:24.45\00:01:25.95 You can get on there and ask the doctor your questions 00:01:25.98\00:01:28.62 or you can request prayer for your health problems 00:01:28.65\00:01:31.39 and there is also library of lot of health articles there 00:01:31.42\00:01:34.52 that we like for you to enjoy and share with your friends. 00:01:34.56\00:01:36.73 But let's get right to it. 00:01:36.76\00:01:38.09 One viewer writes in and asks 00:01:38.13\00:01:39.89 what can be done to help a peripheral neuropathy? 00:01:39.93\00:01:43.43 Now this is one that's out in the extremities. 00:01:43.47\00:01:45.60 Yes, the nerve has been damaged itself 00:01:45.63\00:01:48.47 and we want if we can find out how the nerve has been damaged. 00:01:48.50\00:01:53.14 Unfortunately sometimes nerve has been damaged 00:01:53.17\00:01:56.41 and they can't get better, okay. 00:01:56.44\00:01:58.35 Now we can, we understand that pretty well 00:01:58.38\00:02:00.85 if you poke out an eye, the eye is not coming back. 00:02:00.88\00:02:03.55 Yeah. Okay. 00:02:03.59\00:02:04.92 Well, sometimes you can poke out a nerve 00:02:04.95\00:02:06.49 and the nerve is not coming back 00:02:06.52\00:02:08.42 but it's still what it used to report on can create pain. 00:02:08.46\00:02:11.59 Okay. 00:02:11.63\00:02:12.96 And it's malfunctioning all the time 00:02:12.99\00:02:14.50 and it's not going to get better, 00:02:14.53\00:02:16.03 it's going to malfunction to some degree all the time, 00:02:16.06\00:02:18.73 so sometimes we can determine that 00:02:18.77\00:02:21.10 by taking a careful history. 00:02:21.14\00:02:23.34 But if we think about it what can be done to help it 00:02:23.37\00:02:25.61 but first of all find out 00:02:25.64\00:02:26.98 why the nerve is not doing well. 00:02:27.01\00:02:28.68 And if there is anything we can do to help the nerve 00:02:28.71\00:02:30.68 be happy, let's help. 00:02:30.71\00:02:32.05 What do nerves like? 00:02:32.08\00:02:33.42 Nerves like a good blood supply. 00:02:33.45\00:02:34.92 Okay. 00:02:34.95\00:02:36.28 Okay, and the nerves in the periphery 00:02:36.32\00:02:37.65 like everything that our brain likes. 00:02:37.69\00:02:39.75 They like less stress, they like a diet 00:02:39.79\00:02:42.56 that's a whole food plant based diet, less in fat 00:02:42.59\00:02:45.23 'cause that causes inflammation. 00:02:45.26\00:02:46.76 Right. 00:02:46.80\00:02:48.13 They like the right type of vitamins, 00:02:48.16\00:02:49.80 they had to have B6 and B12, 00:02:49.83\00:02:52.07 those are very important for nerve function. 00:02:52.10\00:02:55.34 They like to have oxygen so the basics 00:02:55.37\00:02:58.24 that the whole body needs the nerve needs. 00:02:58.27\00:03:00.54 Right. 00:03:00.58\00:03:01.91 And then there are some things that can cause damage 00:03:01.94\00:03:04.11 to the nerve itself, alcohol can damage nerves. 00:03:04.15\00:03:06.65 Really? 00:03:06.68\00:03:08.02 Drugs can damage nerves, it's a toxin. 00:03:08.05\00:03:10.49 Certain chemotherapy can damage nerves 00:03:10.52\00:03:13.36 and actually certain medicines can cause neuropathies. 00:03:13.39\00:03:16.22 Okay. 00:03:16.26\00:03:17.59 Sometimes removing the medicines 00:03:17.63\00:03:18.96 can improve the neuropathy, 00:03:18.99\00:03:20.33 sometimes the nerve is permanently damaged. 00:03:20.36\00:03:23.43 And if it's permanently damaged, 00:03:23.47\00:03:24.83 it's not going to report on things as well as it's not, 00:03:24.87\00:03:27.90 so it might chronically report pain 00:03:27.94\00:03:30.21 when there is no pain at all or hot or tingling 00:03:30.24\00:03:33.11 where there is no hot of tingling at all. 00:03:33.14\00:03:35.31 Radiation can cause that, burns can cause that. 00:03:35.34\00:03:40.22 I had a situation in my arm once 00:03:40.25\00:03:42.78 where I didn't have enough blood flow 00:03:42.82\00:03:44.92 and then that enough blood flow damaged the nerves 00:03:44.95\00:03:47.56 and I had a tingling sensation for many, many years 00:03:47.59\00:03:50.63 because the nerves were damaged. 00:03:50.66\00:03:52.63 And eventually that tingling went away, 00:03:52.66\00:03:54.63 so it's very complex, and lot of it has to do 00:03:54.66\00:03:57.03 also with how your brain interprets the data. 00:03:57.07\00:04:00.40 I've seen some people were after few years 00:04:00.44\00:04:02.97 where they've lost the limb, where they've lost the nerves, 00:04:03.00\00:04:05.84 the nerves reported on things for a while 00:04:05.87\00:04:08.04 but then brain says no, this is not working anymore, 00:04:08.08\00:04:11.95 I'm going to turn off this nerve 00:04:11.98\00:04:13.45 because this is not giving me important information anymore. 00:04:13.48\00:04:15.72 Right. 00:04:15.75\00:04:17.09 In downstream it's not helping me, 00:04:17.12\00:04:18.45 I'm turning it off. 00:04:18.49\00:04:19.82 Those are nice situations to have, okay. 00:04:19.85\00:04:23.39 And then sometimes the neuropathies 00:04:23.43\00:04:25.76 if we can't figure out what's causing, 00:04:25.79\00:04:27.33 diabetes is the main cause of neuropathy 00:04:27.36\00:04:29.76 because of the metabolism of it, 00:04:29.80\00:04:31.70 because of the blood supply is compromised, 00:04:31.73\00:04:34.77 so diabetes can cause peripheral neuropathies 00:04:34.80\00:04:37.71 where the nerves don't feel well, 00:04:37.74\00:04:39.84 so you can get infections and tinglings 00:04:39.87\00:04:42.21 and pain from that, 00:04:42.24\00:04:43.65 that's probably that most common neuropathy that we have. 00:04:43.68\00:04:46.11 But we can get neuropathies from things like sleep apnea, 00:04:46.15\00:04:48.95 not getting enough oxygen. 00:04:48.98\00:04:50.55 We can get neuropathies in blockages 00:04:50.59\00:04:52.39 and blood supply to the nerves. 00:04:52.42\00:04:54.92 Different toxins in the environment 00:04:54.96\00:04:56.62 that might affect some people 00:04:56.66\00:04:58.09 that don't affect others, pesticides that we get. 00:04:58.13\00:05:01.03 Some people get neuropathies from things of that nature. 00:05:01.06\00:05:04.50 Some people just don't have the right mineral mix 00:05:04.53\00:05:06.67 in their body, 00:05:06.70\00:05:08.04 so there is lot and this is very complex 00:05:08.07\00:05:09.67 and then how the brain interprets the signals 00:05:09.70\00:05:12.01 is very complex, 00:05:12.04\00:05:13.58 but if you can know 00:05:13.61\00:05:14.94 what's causing the peripheral neuropathy 00:05:14.98\00:05:16.54 and treat the nerve like you do your brain, 00:05:16.58\00:05:18.61 give it all the good things that it needs to heal 00:05:18.65\00:05:20.78 that gives us best chance 00:05:20.82\00:05:22.32 may be to not be a chronic problem. 00:05:22.35\00:05:24.62 When a person has bypass surgery, Nick, 00:05:24.65\00:05:27.12 we cut their spine in two, 00:05:27.16\00:05:29.36 nerves take a long time to heal. 00:05:29.39\00:05:30.99 The chest in two. Yeah, yeah. 00:05:31.03\00:05:32.36 What did I say nerve in two? The spine. 00:05:32.39\00:05:33.90 No, we cut the sternum through. Sternum, yes, yes. 00:05:33.93\00:05:36.16 I'm glad you said you cut the sternum, 00:05:36.20\00:05:37.63 we cut the nerves. 00:05:37.67\00:05:39.03 Those nerves there can be damaged 00:05:39.07\00:05:41.47 up to six months. 00:05:41.50\00:05:43.47 And when a nerve is cut sometimes you know, 00:05:43.51\00:05:45.41 you establish that connection again, 00:05:45.44\00:05:47.34 sometimes you don't it's depending how big 00:05:47.38\00:05:49.64 and how important that nerve is. 00:05:49.68\00:05:51.01 Right. 00:05:51.05\00:05:52.38 You know, some people have cut themselves 00:05:52.41\00:05:53.85 or burn themselves and they touch it 00:05:53.88\00:05:55.92 and they feel numb, 00:05:55.95\00:05:57.29 the nerve has been damaged permanently, 00:05:57.32\00:05:59.32 they never get this feeling back. 00:05:59.35\00:06:01.66 So hopefully that's 00:06:01.69\00:06:03.02 just a little unimportant part of a nerve 00:06:03.06\00:06:04.86 but these neuropathies are very complex 00:06:04.89\00:06:07.70 multi involvement 00:06:07.73\00:06:09.06 and it's very frustrating for people 00:06:09.10\00:06:10.47 'cause sometimes their pain doesn't get better. 00:06:10.50\00:06:12.83 Yeah. 00:06:12.87\00:06:14.20 Because the nerve does not get better. 00:06:14.24\00:06:16.00 So when you work with the patient, 00:06:16.04\00:06:17.37 you teach them all the things that they can do, 00:06:17.41\00:06:18.74 try to do everything that doesn't hurt the nerve 00:06:18.77\00:06:21.31 and then you're unfortunately left well, 00:06:21.34\00:06:23.35 can we teach the brain 00:06:23.38\00:06:24.81 to interpret the nerve signals differently. 00:06:24.85\00:06:27.78 Cognitive therapy with chronic pain. 00:06:27.82\00:06:30.99 Can we treat the body to make endorphins, oxytocin, 00:06:31.02\00:06:35.79 different things that can help the brain do better 00:06:35.82\00:06:38.06 with chronic pain, 00:06:38.09\00:06:39.43 can we distract the brain's pain centers 00:06:39.46\00:06:41.86 so it's thinking about other things 00:06:41.90\00:06:43.90 that will turn down so that those things, 00:06:43.93\00:06:47.20 can we up shift the brain 00:06:47.24\00:06:48.77 instead of down shifting the brain, 00:06:48.80\00:06:50.84 so anything that brings our brain 00:06:50.87\00:06:53.98 to a higher level 00:06:54.01\00:06:55.74 and not at stress level should help neuropathies. 00:06:55.78\00:06:58.98 So this is very complex but I'm hoping we can get, 00:06:59.01\00:07:01.48 you get the basic just if you understand it, 00:07:01.52\00:07:03.82 hope for our audience will know about how complex it is. 00:07:03.85\00:07:07.36 Okay, great. 00:07:07.39\00:07:09.39 Let's move on to another question 00:07:09.42\00:07:10.96 someone asks, what does neuritis mean? 00:07:10.99\00:07:13.19 What is neuritis? 00:07:13.23\00:07:14.56 Yeah, neuritis, anything ITIS just means inflammation 00:07:14.60\00:07:17.93 and that neuritis means 00:07:17.97\00:07:19.47 you have a inflammation of other nerve, 00:07:19.50\00:07:21.87 that's all it means, 00:07:21.90\00:07:23.24 and that nerve can be anywhere, 00:07:23.27\00:07:25.27 inflammation can be caused by lots of trauma 00:07:25.31\00:07:27.34 but inflammation is usually caused by damage to a nerve 00:07:27.38\00:07:31.08 and when a nerve is damaged, 00:07:31.11\00:07:32.45 the immune system tries to come in and help it, 00:07:32.48\00:07:34.48 it frequently infections cause neuritis 00:07:34.52\00:07:36.69 but inflammation of a nerve, trauma through a nerve, 00:07:36.72\00:07:39.42 all those things can cause neuritis. 00:07:39.45\00:07:41.49 All right, so we want to reduce the inflammation 00:07:41.52\00:07:43.56 through a number of different ways. 00:07:43.59\00:07:45.83 Yeah, keep the trauma over use, make our bodies healthy 00:07:45.86\00:07:49.16 as we can especially in the food 00:07:49.20\00:07:50.83 and the toxins that we bring into our body. 00:07:50.87\00:07:53.30 All right, let's talk about this. 00:07:53.34\00:07:54.67 What is an autonomic neuropathy? 00:07:54.70\00:07:58.01 Okay. Autonomic is that right? 00:07:58.04\00:07:59.44 Yeah that's all right, okay. 00:07:59.47\00:08:00.88 Automatic, you know what automatic is, 00:08:00.91\00:08:03.04 the body does it automatically. 00:08:03.08\00:08:04.55 Sure. 00:08:04.58\00:08:05.91 So a neuropathy is the nerves that control 00:08:05.95\00:08:08.08 our automatic functions are messing up. 00:08:08.12\00:08:10.99 Remember nerves do all sorts of things, 00:08:11.02\00:08:12.79 they can tell you if you're having pain, 00:08:12.82\00:08:15.09 they can tell you your sensation, 00:08:15.12\00:08:17.59 peripheral nerve can tell you where you're at in space, 00:08:17.63\00:08:20.50 also we have nerves that regulate our blood pressure, 00:08:20.53\00:08:23.47 our bowels and all these things. 00:08:23.50\00:08:26.17 But when those nerves aren't doing things correctly 00:08:26.20\00:08:28.60 what happens? 00:08:28.64\00:08:30.17 Bad things. Why? 00:08:30.21\00:08:31.54 If you had autonomic, some of the automatic things 00:08:31.57\00:08:33.64 like blood pressure might be messed up, 00:08:33.68\00:08:35.61 so your blood pressure might drop. 00:08:35.64\00:08:36.98 Right. 00:08:37.01\00:08:38.35 Your bowels, you know, it regulates the bowels, 00:08:38.38\00:08:40.22 your bowel function might be messed up. 00:08:40.25\00:08:42.52 You might have what we call a gastroparesis 00:08:42.55\00:08:45.25 or your stomach might not empty in food, 00:08:45.29\00:08:47.32 if the nerve that's controlling the stomach 00:08:47.36\00:08:48.92 doesn't work correctly. 00:08:48.96\00:08:50.43 So the brain is sending signals to our body 00:08:50.46\00:08:53.09 to do these functions 00:08:53.13\00:08:54.46 that normally automatically happen on their own, 00:08:54.50\00:08:56.03 just well, the brain controls it 00:08:56.06\00:08:57.40 but we don't consciously think about, 00:08:57.43\00:08:58.77 oh, make sure this process happens. 00:08:58.80\00:09:00.64 And the nerve damage 00:09:00.67\00:09:02.27 causes the signal not to go through... 00:09:02.30\00:09:04.44 It doesn't work right. 00:09:04.47\00:09:05.81 And therefore the systems don't respond. 00:09:05.84\00:09:07.18 Right, on a autonomic neuropathy 00:09:07.21\00:09:08.74 and you know, you might get, 00:09:08.78\00:09:10.11 you know, normally when you stand up 00:09:10.15\00:09:11.48 your blood pressure goes up 00:09:11.51\00:09:12.85 because it automatically squeezes down, 00:09:12.88\00:09:14.22 it brings your blood, 00:09:14.25\00:09:15.58 but when you have an autonomic neuropathy, 00:09:15.62\00:09:16.95 maybe the blood vessels don't squeeze 00:09:16.99\00:09:18.65 'cause the nerves aren't working as well. 00:09:18.69\00:09:20.36 Now it's interesting that the nerves are just like 00:09:20.39\00:09:23.73 every other part of the body, okay, and they get old. 00:09:23.76\00:09:27.96 And sometimes the nerves wear out. 00:09:28.00\00:09:30.47 And of course we know 00:09:30.50\00:09:31.83 the nerves wear out in the brain 00:09:31.87\00:09:33.20 because you get dementia 00:09:33.23\00:09:34.57 but the nerves can wear out 00:09:34.60\00:09:35.94 in other parts of the body as well. 00:09:35.97\00:09:37.71 Trauma, repetitive trauma can wear out nerves, 00:09:37.74\00:09:40.71 but most of the time the autonomic neuropathy aging, 00:09:40.74\00:09:44.25 different diabetes things like that can do that as well. 00:09:44.28\00:09:47.62 So just one last word here. 00:09:47.65\00:09:49.42 What can people do to help themselves 00:09:49.45\00:09:52.29 from experiencing neuropathies? 00:09:52.32\00:09:54.36 Go to a good physician that can really listen to you 00:09:54.39\00:09:57.46 see if they can find out the cause 00:09:57.49\00:09:59.06 explain some of the complexities 00:09:59.09\00:10:00.83 or neuropathies to you, 00:10:00.86\00:10:02.60 get you to doing everything you can to heal yourself 00:10:02.63\00:10:05.27 your own nerves 00:10:05.30\00:10:06.63 and if you can't, 00:10:06.67\00:10:08.00 the nerves have a good regimen, 00:10:08.04\00:10:09.74 sometimes medications are needed, 00:10:09.77\00:10:11.51 sometimes changing the way we think is needed, 00:10:11.54\00:10:13.98 but one of the most important things for people 00:10:14.01\00:10:15.91 with neuropathy is worship, 00:10:15.94\00:10:18.55 'cause God has promised to create in us 00:10:18.58\00:10:20.78 a new brain to help heal us, 00:10:20.82\00:10:22.85 that's a key thing that people have neuropathies 00:10:22.88\00:10:25.22 and chronic pain that might not go away 00:10:25.25\00:10:27.36 is to realize that God's going to heal it just where, 00:10:27.39\00:10:30.69 when and how. 00:10:30.73\00:10:32.69 Thank you, Dr. Marcum. 00:10:32.73\00:10:34.06 And if you're watching at home 00:10:34.10\00:10:35.43 and you're experiencing neuropathy, 00:10:35.46\00:10:36.80 we want you to stay with us as Dr. Marcum will be 00:10:36.83\00:10:38.93 praying with us in just a moment. 00:10:38.97\00:10:40.44 Let's pray together. 00:10:49.21\00:10:51.11 Father God, I want to pray for those 00:10:51.15\00:10:53.11 that might be suffering from pain 00:10:53.15\00:10:54.68 especially neuropathies. 00:10:54.72\00:10:56.58 Be near to them and comfort them Father 00:10:56.62\00:10:59.35 and let them know that you're the great healer 00:10:59.39\00:11:01.72 is our prayer, amen. 00:11:01.76\00:11:04.26 Neuropathies are very complex, they're very common 00:11:04.29\00:11:08.66 and I hope you've learned a little bit today about that. 00:11:08.70\00:11:11.10 If you want to learn more go to our website 00:11:11.13\00:11:12.93 that's heartwiseministries.org. 00:11:12.97\00:11:15.84
