After a long, hard day of physical work, 00:00:16.68\00:00:19.21 there are a few things that feel better than a warm bath 00:00:19.25\00:00:21.48 to help relax the body and unwind a bit... 00:00:21.52\00:00:23.55 But what if you have overdone it and you're experiencing 00:00:23.59\00:00:26.22 muscle pain? 00:00:26.25\00:00:27.59 Many issues in muscle pain can be eased at home, 00:00:27.62\00:00:29.99 but some should really be taken to the doctor. 00:00:30.03\00:00:32.36 Learn which is which on today's program as Dr. Marcum 00:00:32.39\00:00:35.20 teaches about muscle pain. 00:00:35.23\00:00:36.93 I'm Dr. James Marcum, are you interested in 00:00:37.73\00:00:41.20 discovering the reason why? 00:00:41.24\00:00:43.34 Do you want solutions to your healthcare problem? 00:00:43.37\00:00:45.94 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:00:45.97\00:00:49.01 Well, you're about to be given "The Ultimate Prescription" 00:00:49.04\00:00:53.28 I've discovered that it's a good idea to warm up slowly 00:00:54.38\00:00:57.29 before starting a vigorous workout, 00:00:57.32\00:00:59.25 and general stretching can sometimes help prevent 00:00:59.29\00:01:01.36 muscle damage which causes varying levels of pain. 00:01:01.39\00:01:04.13 But sometimes, muscle pain occurs 00:01:04.16\00:01:05.96 without an apparent cause which is why we need to 00:01:05.99\00:01:09.23 discuss it today on this program. 00:01:09.26\00:01:10.77 Welcome to "The Ultimate Prescription" 00:01:10.80\00:01:12.53 I'm your host Nick Evenson and Dr. Marcum, welcome, 00:01:12.57\00:01:15.47 and what are some of the common causes of muscle pain? 00:01:15.50\00:01:19.01 Yeah Nick, well muscle pains are another type of pain 00:01:19.04\00:01:21.94 that people experience, and remember, 00:01:21.98\00:01:24.75 we've gone over this theme over and over... 00:01:24.78\00:01:26.95 "Whenever you have a pain, 00:01:26.98\00:01:29.12 it's something to be concerned about." 00:01:29.15\00:01:30.72 What level of concern depends on many other variables. 00:01:30.75\00:01:33.99 It's your body's protection mechanism to 00:01:34.02\00:01:35.42 tell you something is wrong. Oh yes... 00:01:35.46\00:01:36.86 Something is wrong, so you don't want to ignore it. 00:01:36.89\00:01:38.79 And muscle pain is one of those. 00:01:38.86\00:01:41.76 You know, it's sometimes hard 00:01:41.80\00:01:43.20 to tell where the pain is coming from. 00:01:43.23\00:01:45.57 Okay, but muscle pain for a doctor is one 00:01:45.60\00:01:47.77 of the easiest ones, okay? 00:01:47.80\00:01:49.14 So what I would do, put your arm over here... All right 00:01:49.17\00:01:51.37 Put your arm over here, if I would 00:01:51.41\00:01:53.07 squeeze you right here and you say, 00:01:53.11\00:01:54.94 "Oh, it hurts, it hurts." Yeah, right! 00:01:54.98\00:01:56.78 And I look and there's no rash there, I would say, 00:01:56.81\00:01:59.35 "You have muscle pain." Okay 00:01:59.38\00:02:00.98 And so that would be step #1. 00:02:01.02\00:02:03.35 Muscle pain is rarely deadly, and I'm going to talk a little 00:02:03.39\00:02:07.59 about the couple of times it is deadly. 00:02:07.62\00:02:10.59 But muscle pain - usually the most common cause of 00:02:10.63\00:02:13.86 muscle pain is overuse. Right 00:02:13.90\00:02:16.70 You just do too much. 00:02:16.73\00:02:18.17 You overuse that part of your body. 00:02:18.20\00:02:21.07 The metabolism goes on, and the temperature goes up. 00:02:21.10\00:02:24.91 You break down the muscle and we go into what we call, 00:02:24.94\00:02:29.11 "anaerobic metabolism." Right 00:02:29.14\00:02:31.55 When we go into anaerobic metabolism or use a muscle 00:02:31.58\00:02:34.78 more than it can do, what happens is it 00:02:34.82\00:02:36.95 builds up the toxins, lactic acidosis is one of them, 00:02:36.99\00:02:40.29 or sometimes you just hurt it and guess what? 00:02:40.32\00:02:42.26 The muscle starts to hurt. Right 00:02:42.29\00:02:44.73 And the treatment for that is to quit doing it and 00:02:44.76\00:02:47.86 usually the muscle gets better on its own. 00:02:47.90\00:02:50.27 Just some rest will help when it's just overuse. Usually! 00:02:50.30\00:02:53.40 But there are so many weekend warriors out there, 00:02:53.44\00:02:57.01 and that don't use their muscles on a regular basis, 00:02:57.04\00:02:59.47 don't give them the substrate it used to be... 00:02:59.51\00:03:02.54 so if you go to your local drugstore or local food market, 00:03:02.58\00:03:07.18 you'll go to the pharmaceutical section and you'll see 00:03:07.22\00:03:10.05 tons of things that you can put on muscles. Right 00:03:10.09\00:03:12.79 Most of them have a chemical called "menthol" in them 00:03:12.82\00:03:15.46 that makes the muscles feel good. 00:03:15.49\00:03:17.23 Some sort of heat up the muscle, 00:03:17.26\00:03:19.13 makes it feel a little bit better, 00:03:19.16\00:03:20.80 but the bottom line, the reason the muscle is 00:03:20.83\00:03:23.00 feeling better is because it's not working anymore. Yes 00:03:23.03\00:03:26.07 So the treatment for an overused muscle is not to overuse it. 00:03:26.10\00:03:29.74 By doing too for the muscle, 00:03:29.77\00:03:31.84 the treatment for that is don't do it again and build up 00:03:31.87\00:03:33.98 your muscle a little bit slower. A little bit at a time. 00:03:34.01\00:03:37.38 Yes, a little bit at a time, so that's probably 00:03:37.41\00:03:38.98 the most common cause of muscle pain that I see. 00:03:39.01\00:03:42.22 The second cause the most common is probably too much 00:03:42.25\00:03:45.72 stress in the life, too much tension. 00:03:45.75\00:03:48.32 And Nick, we talked about this many times for chronic pain 00:03:48.36\00:03:51.43 that's not life-threatening, STRESS is a leading cause. 00:03:51.46\00:03:55.00 And if you think about the physiology of stress, 00:03:55.03\00:03:57.70 you're under stress from no matter what it is; 00:03:57.73\00:04:00.47 your adrenalin goes up, 00:04:00.50\00:04:02.20 your inflammation in your body goes up; 00:04:02.24\00:04:04.34 you hold your muscles tight because your under stress... 00:04:04.37\00:04:06.91 "I have to do more work, my boss..." 00:04:06.94\00:04:08.34 You probably have a mean boss, your muscles are all tight 00:04:08.38\00:04:10.41 all the time and you just go home with headaches 00:04:10.45\00:04:12.58 and muscle pains all night, you go home and say, 00:04:12.61\00:04:14.75 "Honey, honey, my muscles are hurting all over." 00:04:14.78\00:04:16.85 And she says, "Well, did you overuse them today?" 00:04:16.89\00:04:18.92 And you go, "No." And she says, "You must have 00:04:18.95\00:04:20.32 too much stress at work." Right 00:04:20.36\00:04:21.99 So, occasionally my son was having some problems 00:04:22.02\00:04:25.46 with muscles - it really didn't make sense. 00:04:25.49\00:04:27.53 You know, and he was just having too much stress... 00:04:27.56\00:04:29.83 to make the inflammatory and it got in the muscles 00:04:29.86\00:04:32.43 and it caused a lot of pain. 00:04:32.47\00:04:33.94 So just cutting back down stress. 00:04:33.97\00:04:35.97 The opposite of stress is rest. 00:04:36.00\00:04:38.54 More rest - this is a place where worship is very useful. 00:04:38.57\00:04:41.68 Sometimes that could be all that's needed 00:04:41.71\00:04:43.71 to relax those muscles. 00:04:43.75\00:04:45.81 So if you're used to working hard every day regularly, 00:04:45.85\00:04:48.82 you can probably get by with that. Yes 00:04:48.85\00:04:50.62 But if you don't work hard every day, 00:04:50.65\00:04:52.29 and then you go out and give a really big effort on 00:04:52.32\00:04:54.66 one particular day, that's going to cause a problem. 00:04:54.69\00:04:56.93 Exactly! 00:04:56.96\00:04:58.29 Another common cause of muscle pain is trauma. 00:04:58.33\00:05:02.06 Let's say you decide to take up boxing. Okay 00:05:02.80\00:05:06.80 And you're not very good at boxing, 00:05:06.84\00:05:08.80 and someone else is very good at boxing, 00:05:08.84\00:05:10.34 and he keeps boxing you and hitting you and hitting the 00:05:10.37\00:05:12.71 muscles... I'm going to have a lot of muscle pain. 00:05:12.77\00:05:14.11 That's trauma or here's another trauma... 00:05:14.14\00:05:16.51 Let's say you decide to be a weight-lifter. Okay 00:05:16.54\00:05:19.15 And you go into the gym and everyone there is 00:05:19.18\00:05:20.98 putting up a lot of weight, and you say, 00:05:21.02\00:05:22.35 "Man, I gotta lift a lot of weight too." Exactly! 00:05:22.38\00:05:24.22 And you put trauma on the muscles. Right 00:05:24.29\00:05:26.09 That's another thing that can cause muscle problems. 00:05:26.12\00:05:29.96 Muscle strain and tears maybe? Yeah 00:05:29.99\00:05:31.69 So most of these are not dangerous 00:05:31.73\00:05:33.60 so far - if you're smart, okay? If you're smart about it. 00:05:33.63\00:05:36.43 Certain medications that we take can damage 00:05:36.46\00:05:40.30 muscles and hurt muscles. 00:05:40.34\00:05:41.74 The most common one that everyone has heard of is 00:05:41.77\00:05:44.81 the medicine the "statins" that lower cholesterol. 00:05:44.84\00:05:48.11 Those can cause muscle pains because they change 00:05:48.14\00:05:50.35 some of the protein function in the muscle. 00:05:50.38\00:05:53.01 Other medicines that can cause 00:05:53.05\00:05:54.58 it are medicines called "diuretics." 00:05:54.62\00:05:57.75 They take fluid out of the body and, of course, 00:05:57.79\00:06:01.12 the muscles are made of fluid, the muscle gets dehydrated, 00:06:01.16\00:06:04.06 it cramps and it hurts. Right 00:06:04.09\00:06:05.59 You see, and the muscle anywhere can do that. Yeah 00:06:05.63\00:06:08.56 It also loses potassium and magnesium. 00:06:08.60\00:06:11.23 So anything that pulls fluid out of your body 00:06:11.27\00:06:13.74 can cause this as well. 00:06:13.77\00:06:15.10 A nutritional deficiency can cause muscle aches, 00:06:15.14\00:06:18.51 and the ones we see mostly are low in potassium, 00:06:18.54\00:06:21.18 and low in magnesium. 00:06:21.21\00:06:22.54 You know when mom said to eat your fruits and veggies, 00:06:22.58\00:06:24.81 there was a reason for that. 00:06:24.85\00:06:26.51 Okay, if you don't eat the fruits and veggies, 00:06:26.55\00:06:28.22 you're more prone to have muscle spasms 00:06:28.25\00:06:30.49 because those are the basic ingredients of a muscle. 00:06:30.52\00:06:33.36 Water, magnesium, potassium, 00:06:33.39\00:06:36.29 those help the muscles work well. 00:06:36.32\00:06:38.83 Now the one that's serious, that could be life-threatening, 00:06:38.86\00:06:42.00 is one called, "a myositis," a severe myositis, 00:06:42.03\00:06:46.00 and when that happens, I've seen it a couple of times 00:06:46.03\00:06:48.87 in a few years - you see it in a couple of instances, Nick, 00:06:48.90\00:06:52.34 I saw it in a bicycle rider that was riding a long bicycle ride, 00:06:52.37\00:06:56.51 and he didn't get his water. 00:06:56.54\00:06:57.88 And his muscles broke down and when the muscles 00:06:57.91\00:07:00.95 started to break down for energy, 00:07:00.98\00:07:02.55 it increased a chemical in the body called, "CPK," 00:07:02.58\00:07:05.65 which damages the kidneys. 00:07:05.69\00:07:07.59 That could be potentially life-threatening, 00:07:07.62\00:07:10.06 and we call that, "rhabdomyolysis," 00:07:10.66\00:07:13.40 muscle breakdown and the muscle breakdown product 00:07:13.43\00:07:16.87 overwhelms the kidneys and the kidneys can go into failure. 00:07:16.90\00:07:20.70 Another type of person that would get that is... 00:07:20.74\00:07:23.24 and I've seen it in a few elderly patients 00:07:23.27\00:07:25.34 that would fall down at home and lay on the floor 00:07:25.37\00:07:28.04 for 2 or 3 days after they fell down on a muscle... 00:07:28.08\00:07:30.58 not able to get to the phone, not eating or drinking, 00:07:30.61\00:07:33.18 someone then finds them, they go and measure this 00:07:33.21\00:07:36.02 muscle breakdown product called, "CPK" in the blood, 00:07:36.05\00:07:39.35 "creatine phosphokinase (CPK)," and a large amount of that 00:07:39.39\00:07:43.86 floods the kidneys, this muscle... 00:07:43.89\00:07:45.89 and the kidneys can't take it and they go into renal failure. 00:07:45.93\00:07:48.63 Because there's no water for the kidneys to use? Yes 00:07:48.66\00:07:50.60 You know, usually if people get hydrated, 00:07:51.73\00:07:53.87 it doesn't cause a big problem. Right 00:07:53.90\00:07:55.80 We call that "rhabdomyolysis," and that could happen. 00:07:55.84\00:07:58.24 The muscles help regulate temperature in the body, 00:07:58.27\00:08:02.64 do those type of things, but those things 00:08:02.68\00:08:04.48 can cause muscle breakdown 00:08:04.51\00:08:06.01 and be potentially life-threatening. 00:08:06.05\00:08:08.38 Now, there are many other things 00:08:08.42\00:08:10.29 out there that can cause muscle pains. 00:08:10.32\00:08:12.55 Those are just the most common ones. 00:08:12.59\00:08:14.36 Sleep apnea - did you know that? 00:08:14.39\00:08:16.29 That's when you don't get enough oxygen at night. 00:08:16.32\00:08:18.19 Why do you have it? Because you don't get enough oxygen. 00:08:18.23\00:08:20.50 Muscles like oxygen... So that can cause pain. 00:08:20.53\00:08:23.10 Thyroid - If you don't get enough thyroid, 00:08:23.13\00:08:26.74 that can cause it because thyroid is a chemical 00:08:26.77\00:08:28.20 that regulates how the muscles work. 00:08:28.24\00:08:30.44 Don't get enough blood into your muscle. 00:08:30.47\00:08:32.91 That can hurt because, you know, the muscles need blood too. 00:08:32.94\00:08:36.54 Needs a blood supply, so if you have blockages 00:08:36.58\00:08:38.58 in your arteries, that can cause a problem. 00:08:38.61\00:08:40.22 The biggest muscle that I work with that sees that 00:08:40.25\00:08:42.62 is an internal muscle called, "the heart." 00:08:42.65\00:08:45.25 The musculoskeletal muscles can 00:08:45.29\00:08:46.99 have that to some degree as well. 00:08:47.02\00:08:49.02 Infections - have you ever had the flu, 00:08:49.06\00:08:51.43 and you get achy all over? Yep - sure have! 00:08:51.46\00:08:54.50 You get achy, the body turns on all these inflammatory 00:08:54.53\00:08:57.93 markers trying to fight an infection, you're achy all over 00:08:57.97\00:09:00.87 because your body's immune system is trying to 00:09:00.90\00:09:02.70 fight an infection. 00:09:02.74\00:09:04.07 Anytime the immune system is really revved up, 00:09:04.11\00:09:07.18 it can cause muscle aches. 00:09:07.21\00:09:08.71 So not only can that come from infection, 00:09:08.74\00:09:10.75 it can come from things like: lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, 00:09:10.78\00:09:14.92 scleroderma; the medical conditions where the body 00:09:14.95\00:09:18.09 attacks itself. 00:09:18.12\00:09:19.69 Now sometimes, people have muscle aches and we really don't 00:09:19.72\00:09:23.69 know why and we give that term, we can call that 00:09:23.73\00:09:27.03 "fibromyalgia." Okay 00:09:27.06\00:09:29.26 Fibromyalgia, but usually there's something in the 00:09:29.30\00:09:31.63 environment that triggers the immune system 00:09:31.67\00:09:33.90 that causes the muscles to ache all the time. 00:09:33.94\00:09:36.60 And I would say that 8 out of 10 people that I see in my 00:09:36.64\00:09:39.94 office - that if I give them to eat a whole food plant-based 00:09:39.97\00:09:42.84 diet, water, stretching and exercise, the fibromyalgia 00:09:42.88\00:09:47.22 dramatically improves. 00:09:47.25\00:09:49.98 Inactivity can cause muscle aches 00:09:50.02\00:09:52.52 because you just don't do anything, right. 00:09:53.36\00:09:55.06 Alcohol - too much alcohol and drugs 00:09:55.09\00:09:57.26 can cause muscle aches. 00:09:57.29\00:09:59.43 And then one that I've seen a few times cause 00:09:59.46\00:10:01.40 muscle aches, we don't see it that much, 00:10:01.43\00:10:02.76 is any type of malignancies, cancers. 00:10:02.80\00:10:05.30 Cancers can get into the bones - specifically, 00:10:05.33\00:10:07.90 the lymphomas, leukemias, they make extra cells. 00:10:07.94\00:10:11.24 They can metastasis and sometimes that can cause chronic 00:10:11.27\00:10:14.74 muscle aches because of all the medical problems it creates. 00:10:14.78\00:10:19.01 So that's just a few of the many muscle aches 00:10:19.05\00:10:22.88 that we have, myalgias that we have. 00:10:22.92\00:10:25.52 Now can you think of the last time that you had a muscle ache? 00:10:25.55\00:10:29.69 Yeah, I was actually doing a running race, 00:10:29.72\00:10:33.19 and I started off when I saw one of my buddies 00:10:33.23\00:10:35.56 was ahead of me and so I was going to run him down, 00:10:35.60\00:10:37.43 and then chase him down and run with him 00:10:37.47\00:10:38.80 and I started off a little too fast and about halfway 00:10:38.83\00:10:41.60 through the race, I had to stop because my 00:10:41.64\00:10:43.57 calf started cramping. There you go! 00:10:43.61\00:10:45.21 I drank a good amount of water in preparation and whatnot, 00:10:45.24\00:10:48.28 but I just started too fast and it cramped up. 00:10:48.31\00:10:51.01 And that is probably... if we can leave one thing 00:10:51.05\00:10:54.02 with our listening audience today, for cramps 00:10:54.05\00:10:56.79 and muscle aches, one of the hallmarks 00:10:56.82\00:10:59.52 we should do is make sure we get enough water. 00:10:59.55\00:11:03.79 I tell everyone to eat more greens because it has 00:11:03.83\00:11:06.80 potassium and magnesium, replace your electrolytes, 00:11:06.83\00:11:10.07 and then, if you've noticed, whenever a muscle gets cramped, 00:11:10.10\00:11:13.30 it sort of balls up. Yeah 00:11:13.34\00:11:14.94 So usually you need some type of stretching maneuver 00:11:14.97\00:11:17.67 to relieve that balled up knot... 00:11:17.71\00:11:19.77 some type of massage maneuver that will help. 00:11:19.81\00:11:22.48 But I would say that that is probably 80% of 00:11:22.51\00:11:25.28 the muscle pains is just because we don't take care of our 00:11:25.31\00:11:28.08 muscles the way we should. Right 00:11:28.12\00:11:30.09 You know, in your description of what the muscles need... 00:11:30.12\00:11:33.36 it's kind of like a car engine. Yep 00:11:33.39\00:11:35.42 You gotta feed it the right fuels; 00:11:35.46\00:11:37.46 you've got to let the waste, the exhaust out, 00:11:37.49\00:11:40.36 and your blood does all of that, 00:11:40.40\00:11:42.66 if you've eaten the right foods and you drink enough water. 00:11:42.70\00:11:44.83 And for our athletes out there, everyone likes to 00:11:44.87\00:11:47.80 run these long marathon races, Nick... 00:11:47.84\00:11:50.44 Right, good challenge. But that's not 00:11:50.47\00:11:51.81 really good for our muscles. 00:11:51.84\00:11:53.17 It can be too much stress. Right 00:11:53.21\00:11:54.54 And in the muscles, it puts too much stress, 00:11:54.58\00:11:56.14 it wears them out; their metabolism is going fast; 00:11:56.18\00:11:59.85 the temperature goes up, so you have to keep 00:11:59.88\00:12:02.35 getting lots of water to replace what the muscles 00:12:02.38\00:12:04.92 in the body is losing. 00:12:04.95\00:12:06.29 That could be a real serious problem on our muscles 00:12:06.32\00:12:08.66 so be careful to exercise extremely to make sure 00:12:08.69\00:12:12.56 your muscles have what it needs. 00:12:12.59\00:12:14.10 And if your muscles start to ache and they start 00:12:14.13\00:12:16.30 hurting and your body starts malfunctioning, 00:12:16.33\00:12:19.33 maybe you're overusing your muscles; 00:12:19.37\00:12:21.84 maybe you need a little bit more help; 00:12:21.87\00:12:23.61 maybe you should be a little bit smarter. 00:12:23.64\00:12:25.01 Because there's a process called, "oxidation," Nick. 00:12:25.04\00:12:28.08 Oxidation just means that parts of aging. 00:12:28.11\00:12:30.75 And if you overdo it and you do too much, 00:12:30.78\00:12:33.25 and you go into oxidation, 00:12:33.28\00:12:34.88 the parts wear out a lot quicker. 00:12:34.92\00:12:37.32 Antioxidants are another good thing for athletes 00:12:37.92\00:12:40.76 that use a lot of muscles. Yep 00:12:40.79\00:12:42.42 Now my son does a lot of exercising of a lot of muscles, 00:12:42.46\00:12:45.09 and I really make sure he hydrates himself, greens, 00:12:45.13\00:12:47.66 and lots of antioxidants especially 00:12:47.70\00:12:50.03 after the acute exercise. 00:12:50.07\00:12:52.07 The muscles are repairing themselves. 00:12:52.10\00:12:53.80 They are repairing themselves get a lot of antioxidants, 00:12:53.84\00:12:55.90 a lot of water, a lot of rest, a lot of good things, 00:12:55.94\00:12:58.94 make those muscles able to fix themselves 00:12:58.97\00:13:01.31 and repair themselves sooner. 00:13:01.34\00:13:02.68 So we really need to listen to our bodies. 00:13:02.71\00:13:04.05 God has given us an amazing system to tell us 00:13:04.08\00:13:06.61 when there's a problem and we need to listen 00:13:06.65\00:13:08.82 to that and take care of our muscles. 00:13:08.85\00:13:10.29 But the good news... I'm going to interrupt you. 00:13:10.32\00:13:11.99 The good news is most muscle pains are not life-threatening, 00:13:12.02\00:13:15.09 just only a few instances are, so that's a good news. 00:13:15.12\00:13:17.66 Usually if you're smart about it, 00:13:17.69\00:13:19.03 it gets better pretty quick. Excellent! 00:13:19.06\00:13:20.76 Well, we're going to be back in just a moment, 00:13:20.80\00:13:22.60 and Dr. Marcum will be answering questions 00:13:22.63\00:13:24.43 and if you have a question, go to our website at: 00:13:24.47\00:13:26.47 heartwiseministries.org 00:13:26.50\00:13:28.20 Go to the "Ask the Doctor" page and submit 00:13:28.24\00:13:30.57 your questions there and we will get you some information 00:13:30.61\00:13:32.87 about your issue. 00:13:32.91\00:13:34.48 Stay right with us, there's more to come. 00:13:34.51\00:13:36.34
